For those interested, here is the process I follow. This is the second skull I've done and both have turned out nicely. I know it looks like a lot of work at face value, and there is a lot of time that goes into it, but I was super nervous the first time I tried this, did a lot of research on how to do euro mounts and ultimately almost bailed out and paid someone $150 to do it for me. I ended up sticking it out and am glad I did both times. I know it's cliche, but if I can do this, anyone can do it and there is an immense amount of self pride that you get from seeing it hanging on your wall. Good luck and I look forward to seeing pictures of others who attempt to do their own DIY euro mount!

  1. Using your favorite knife or utility knife remove the hide from the deer skull. I find it best to pull the hide away from the skull while making small slices where the hide is still connected to the skull. But use whatever means you like so long as you get the hide removed.
  2. Once the skin is removed, I typically start working on removing the lower jaw and tongue. Slowly start pulling the bottom jaw open and cut away at the tendons and meat that give you resistance. Eventually the lower jaw should completely give way and separate from the skull.
  3. With the lower jaw removed I next turn my focus to removing the eyeballs. Typically I will start by cutting away at the fatty waxy substance behind the eye socket. Once you have most of that stuff removed, start pushing on the eyeball from behind, trying to force it out through the front of the skull. As you're pushing, try to cut away at the tissue around the eye to release it from the socket. Eventually you'll be able to pop the eyeball out and cut away the remaining tissue and nerves.
  4. Once you've removed both eyeballs it's time to move onto the brain. Depending on your budget and patience you can handle this one of two ways. The first time I just used a combination of picks and knives to dig the brain matter out of the brain cavity. The second time around I ordered the RaptoRazor Scrambler (link below) which is essentially a drill bit that you string up with weed eater string. Using this tool you can simply pour water into the brain cavity, mix it up with the scrambler, and pour it out. It took me approximately 4 to 5 cycles of this to get the brain cavity completely cleaned. But as soon as the water begins to pour clear you're done.
  5. Now that the brain and eyeballs have been removed from the skull use a combination of knives and picks to get as much meat and cartilage off the skull as possible. Pay extra attention in detail to the nasal cavity as the bones are delicate and break easily, but there is so much cartilage to be removed.
  6. Once you're satisfied and have removed as much meat and cartilage as possible it's time to boil the skull. I use an outdoor turkey fryer with an old stock pot. Add a box of baking soda to the pot of water and bring to a simmer just below a boil and let your skull simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. I used a 2'x4' to wedge my antlers do that they did not submerge in the water.
  7. Remove the skull from the water and remove any remaining meat and cartilage using picks, pliers, and a steel brush off you have one available. Just be careful not to gouge the skull.
  8. At this point you can optionally remove the ear bones by prying them out with a flat head screw driver. This will remove a good chunk of meat that can be hard to get to any other way. Some folks like the look with the ear bones but it's entirely up to you.
  9. Place the skull back into the simmering water for 25 to 35 minutes. While the skull is simmering, fill a large cooler or tub with hot water (as hot as your hands can stand to be submerged in) and squirt a lot of dawn dish soap in.
  10. Remove the skull from the pot and immediately submerge it into the water dish soap solution. Using an air compressor, submerge the skull and air nozzle and spray over the entire surface and into all cavities of the skull. This simulates a pressure washer and the dish soap helps to de-grease the skull while also removing the bits and pieces of hard to reach meat.

Some folks will use a pressure washer instead of steps 9 and 10, but I prefer this method as it removes the grease which can cause the skull to yellow over time.

  11. Let your skull dry over night (or set it in front of a space heater for a half hour or so) to ensure its dried thoroughly.

At this point your skull can be mounted if you are satisfied with the appearance. The remaining steps are my preference and help with the cosmetics only.

  12. Bleach your skull. You can order these products off of Amazon (links below), but I just go to the local Sally Beauty Supply. Make sure to wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask for this part as the bleach mixture can be relatively strong and caustic. Tape off the antlers with masking or painters tape to the brow tines in order to protect the antlers from the bleaching mixture. Mix Salon Care 40 Volume Developer Creme with Salon Care Quick White Powder Lightener until it's roughly the consistency of a milk shake and then paint the skull and cavities with the mixture. I used an old tooth brush to cover the inside of the brain cavity and dumped some extra in their along with the nasal cavity.

Once the skull is entirely covered, wrap the entire thing in Saran wrap and place in front of a space heater. The heat is necessary to activate the bleaching agent. Heat the skull for about an hour, rotating every 10 minutes or so to ensure even heating.

While the skull is heating, prepare a new cooler full of hot water; no soap this time. Once the skull had been heated, cut the Saran wrap and submerge the skull to the base of the antlers and use your air compressor to bubble the surface and cavities again to remove the bleach and clean the skull.

Let the skull dry thoroughly. As the skull dries out will lighten up, but if you're unsatisfied with the color you can repeat the cleaning process as needed.

  13. After the skull has dried you should have a beautiful euro mount ready to go. This last step is a personal preference, but I usually take a cherry or colonial wood stain, dip a rag in it and rub the antlers down to darken them back up. BE CAREFUL TO NOT DRIP THE STAIN ON THE NEWLY BLEACHED SKULL.

This also brings out a lot of unseen character in the antlers. Let the stain set for 10 minutes or so and wipe them down with a clean dry cloth.

Now you should have a beautiful skull with a nice, dark rack ready to mount. My mount of choice is the Walnut Hollow Country Solid Wood Deluxe Euro Skull Display Kit from Amazon.

1.) Blue: a classic, blue jeans. Need I say more?

2.) Summer: what says summer more than memories of being a kid and making sandcastles? Exactly .

3.) Food related: okay, so this is personal. I am Italian and no one I have ever met has this in their homes. We make our pizzas in normal ovens or just go down the street to one of the many takeaway restaurants. What is a pizza oven and why does anyone need one!

4.) Someone else: I decided to go random wishlist on this and what better way to learn something new about someone that go through their lists?! So I got /u/krispykremedonuts and her wishlists are full of amazing things. And a lot of socks. Someone get this girl some socks! I would get her socks. 😂

5.) Book: you need to read Sum: 40 tales from the afterlives. I recommend this to anyone who would listen. It's 'speculative fiction,' whatever that means, but essentially it's 40 short stories about what may happen after we die. It may sound weird, but seriously, trust me. Read the wiki page of it if you need to be convinced or the Amazon product description. It really makes you think and sticks with you!

6.) Under $1: This was hard! But I found the cutest mini-pens. One dollar, free shipping, AND adorable. BAM!

7.) Dogs: I've been considering getting this fancy brush. It's supposed to be super good for dogs with long hair!

8.) Not useful but awesome: Okay, so I have been obsessed with the idea of being able to print photos from my phone since forever. Useful? Most definitely not, awesome...HECK YES! Check this out!!!

9.) Movie: Life is Beautiful. It's about selfless love. It's beautiful and I can't speak more about it without bursting into tears. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen it, WATCH IT. It's incredibly beautiful and moving.

10.) Zombies: You definitely need a machete to defend yourself. This is even sharp on both sides!!!

11.) Needs and current goals: At this moment in my life, any sort of clothing would change my life because there is only so much sewing you can do before your clothes start looking very sad. BUT, since it has to do with current goals, a pair of workout leggings would really help in my workout goals! I've lost 3kg in the past 3 months! It's not a lot, but damn I'm SO happy :D :D :D

12.) Add-On item: Oh, add-ons...groans

13.) Fandom: CAW!

14.) So expensive: $11,703.38 carpet cleaner. I don't even know. But at least it has free shipping!

15.) Sharks: temporary tattoos!

16.) Good smells: I adore the smell of rosemary.

17.) Toy: I absolutely loved my jump rope. I had the red one! I got super good at it and my friends and I would jump rope together around the neighborhood like a bunch of weirdos. Such good memories though :D

18.) Writers: never underestimate the need of coffee in any job you may have.

19.) Current obsession: so it's almost summer and I am obsessing over which ankle bracelet I want. I feel naked without them. It's a problem 😂

20.) Random: this is what I got one of my last contest winners. I saw it on one of their wishlists and couldn't resist!!!

I know you said you don't have time, but making a sandbox for her (of course with parents permission) would be awesome, and they could keep it for years. Plus you could always update it each year- repaint the sides, add decoration, etc as a birthday gift.

From Amazon: A turtle that shows the constellations. My baby brother had one and loved it- and my parents enjoyed having a pretty night light that they could use as a learning tool.

Also this keepsake kit will allow the parents to make a new Christmas ornament of their girl's first Christmas, plus they can make an extra one for the favorite grandma. Yes, this isn't really for the daughter, but lets be honest; she'll play with the box and be completely overjoyed.

If you want to really make the daughter happy, this sensory tub is AMAZING. Just a tub, you say? Oh no. This can be filled with sand, small pebbles, noodles, water, beans, etc to fully engage her sensory experience. I teach with a program that has one-year-olds and they go crazy when these tubs are brought out. You can even make it into a cute basket by including things like this and this and still stay in your budget! :)

For me? I'd like this so I can sleep in a few mornings :) Good luck to you in your quest for the perfect present!

This is about a 3b. I have 3b hair and while his cut is a lot different than mine the curl is pretty similar.

You need a good daily hair care routine that is going to require some trial and error on your end.

Here's a basic step by step routine:

Detangling - Get in the habit of detangling your hair while its wet. Get yourself a widetooth comb intended for detangling (like this one) and while your hair is wet use it and your fingers to pull out any of your tangles, pay close attention to the back of your head where it would normally rest against any sort of headrest (chair, car, whatever). Don't worry about getting them all, this is something you'll be doing throughout the routine, we're just getting started.

Now that we've loosened up our hair it's time to cleanse it.

Cleanser - It's best to think of this step like face wash, but for your hair, in this step you're getting rid of any oils or products still left in your hair and cleaning it.

There are three main types:

  1. Shampoo - We don't want normal shampoo, however, it isn't good for our hair. You want a non-sulfate shampoo, which won't dry out or damage your hair.

  2. Hair Cleanser - Often comes in a creme form, this is one of the more popular shampoo alternatives.

  3. Cowash - This is a conditioner that also cleanses. Sort of like those all in one bottles of body wash/shampoo/conditioners except its just conditioner intended to clean your hair without damaging it like a sulfate shampoo. I currently use a cowash, this one in particular.

With your hair still wet use your cleanser of choice and wash your hair, but before you start washing it out, it's time to break out your detangler comb and work out the tougher tangles now that your hair is lubed up and they'll give easier.

Wash the product out and if you weren't using a cowash, go ahead and use your favorite conditioner (this is going to be a big experiment on your part, personally I cut this out by going the cowash route).

To Dry or Not to Dry?

So the next stype is styling your curls with any number of products, but before we get to that step, there's another thing you're going to want to experiment with, which is, whether or not you want to dry your hair before applying it. Personally, I prefer a good middle ground on this as it gives me the best results, so I'll towel dry my hair a little bit so that it's no longer "wet" but sort of "damp". Experiment with this until you find the best results for you.

    Curl Definintion, Anti-Frizz, and Styling

Now that your hair is clean and conditioned and ready to apply hair product let's talk about some hair products. I recommend picking up at least 1 of each of the big options I'll list below because they each do things a little differently and often times you can find yourself mixing and matching and experimenting to find the best results.

    The big ones to consider:

  4. Leave-In Conditioner/Hair Milk - These are light hair products that are meant to hydrate/moisturize your hair. They are great to get your hair ready to style and are often used as a refresher to re-define loose curls and combat frizz. In some cases this is all you need to get a nice leave and go hair style. I have been using this leave-in for a few months now and I love it!
  5. Curl Creme/Smoothie - This product is all about softening, moisturizing, refreshing, conditioning, styling, and combatting frizz, a lot like a Leave-In, and because they are so much like a leave-in you can use them as such, some cremes/smoothies are marketed that way. It's a moistorizing styler that leaves your hair soft to the touch unlike other options. I use this curl smoothie, I have been using this one for 2 months now, but I experimented with a lot before settling on this one.
  6. Curl Definer/Pomade - In contrast to the Creme/Smoothie option we have the definer/pomade/gel option. These are good for hold, shine, and controlling frizz. They have a sleek/wet/polished look to them as they lock in moisture and often have wax in them. This combination makes them great for maintaining that defined curl look throughout the day, where others you'll have to re-apply or refresh at some point in a longer day. These products will leave your hair crunchy or oily or both, especially if you over-use the product, and if you have naturally oily hair I'd avoid using this product entirely. I have two products for this job. First is Curls' Gel-Les'C, which is pretty light (thanks to using a little gel in its mixture) and doesn't give me too much crunch, which I like. The second is
Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey, which I'm really liking.

Once you figure out which products youre going to use, follow their directions and style your hair the way you like.

But just to quickly review my process is as follows:

  7. Wake up, shower, de-tangle.
  8. Cowash + detangle some more.
  9. Partially dry the hair, and put in leave-in conditioner.
  10. I let it sit for a few minutes while I get dressed/make breakfast/whatever.
  11. Apply either Curl Creme/Smoothie or Pomade and style. My day-to-day is the curl creme and I usually shake and go/finger comb and use a pick to make sure there's an equal amount of "puff" all around.

    Hope this helps!

you realize than an extravert would do good to work on introvert skills, because you see the benefits of being an introvert, right? so you should work on the strengths of an extravert. that is step one.

1a. read this, and apply liberally. as an introvert, you're very perceptive. you will not lose this skill by developing your ability to be extraverted.

1b. check out /r/seduction and /r/askseddit. your friends don't know how to attract women. their female friends don't know what they're looking for. people who get their needs met up to their basest standards will not devote time to figuring shit out. don't become an asshole, but absorb information from these places, and see what rings true.

1c. go to /r/malefashionadvice and figure out what works for you. do you look like a chump? fix it. if you are uncomfortable dressing in a way that feels fake, figure out what doesn't feel fake. the main rule is appear like you take care in your appearance. this communicates that you are a thoughtful person, have a personal style, and are financially and emotionally stable. it also allows a woman to compliment you on an element of your style. something easy to start with is a $30 timex weekender or easy reader with a leather band. throw out all your old shitty shirts. if you're a t-shirt wearer, you can get designer t-shirts in bags at tj maxx/ross type stores.

1d. hello, /r/malegrooming. put some fucking hair mud in your hair. go to /r/wicked_edge and start shaving with a DE. take pride and care in your grooming. PM me for a <$100 starter kit (links to products, i'm not selling it). if you have pimples, handle them. cut your goddamned nose hairs.

1e. i recommend /r/Fitness, but they can be jerks. on a basic level, i would recommend being able to do body weight exercises like push ups, chin ups, crunches, squats. do some running, and some jumping jacks.

1f. get a hobby that you're excited about and want to yap incessantly about to the point of getting on people's nerves. i started fixed gear cycling, and i'm working on my bike, and it's loads of fun and just for me.

the second step is to just hang out with more people. we live in the 21st century, and you're 23. don't ask to be set up. it's silly. sub-points:

2a. go out and do things by yourself. smoke some weed, then go bike around the park at night. walk around a college campus and learn where all the cool spots are. go to an art museum. what you're doing is learning to be fun. do shit, and enjoy it. don't have it be just the consumption of media, either. go bowling.

2b. when you go out, talk to people. notice something funny? mention it to the person standing next to you. fat guy has a cool laptop? ask them about it. a girl has glorious tits? tell her you like her boots. especially if you start frequenting locations, you can start a conversation with someone who has a routine about how you see them there all the time and haven't introduced yourself.

2c. now that you're thinking of fun shit to do and talking to people, come up with something fun to do, and invite people you know. have fun. this can be going out somewhere. it can be making nachos and watching some nerdy movie. whatever.

2d. now that you've established a fun persona with your friends with positive associations, they might start inviting you. but people, especially naturally social people, often will forget about people. don't take it personally when they don't invite you. when someone mentions doing something with people, say "mind if i tag along?" or "dude, i should totally go to that." if they say no or whatever, go, "cool. let me know when something awesome happens."

and then you start talking to women and inviting them to do things one on one. so, a recap:

  1. take care of yourself and your appearance, and lrn2social

  2. talk to people, do fun things, become a fun person, develop all your relationships.

  3. invite women to do shit.

the thing about me as an introvert is i have a hard time putting myself out there with people, but that's bullshit. i'm just being a disingenuous asshole. my mom recently died, and i've just started talking to people and telling them what's going on and how i feel and what i'm thinking. it's so much better. no extra pain, and much better relationships with people. step 0 is quit being a withholding asshole. no offense.

Your hair sounds a bit similar to mine tho a bit finer and more prone to be weighed down with synthetic products; that was very intuitive of you to notice! The major pitfall of common store brands is that theyre filled with sulfates, silcone and parabens. They will cling to your hair shafts and build up over time leaving your hair waxy and heavy.

If youre an ingredient reader look at like the top 5 ingredients; you can usually spot the bad synthetic stuff pretty fast. For sulfates, look for ingredients that end in “-ate”, this typically indicates that its a sulfate. Silicones normally end in “-cone”, “-xane”, and “-col”. And parabens can usually be spotted by ending in “paraben”.

Some general advice would definitely be: 1. Dont crank the shower temp up to max. Hot water only makes skin drier which leads to more compensation in oil production. 2. Dont wash your hair every day. you can shower everyday, by all means I encourage it! But save the shampoo for every other day. Most excessive oil problems are actually because youre stripping your hair dry and your scalp is over compensating.

As far as some product recommendations! I would get a nice Clarifying Shampoo ; These are best used maybe once a week if you have thinner hair, tho I have been known to use mine more frequently if my hair feels truly disgusting which sometimes hair just do that. These are good for stripping away the weeks build up of grime and sweat and dead skin. your hair will feel very squeaky after using this stuff. Always condition and leave it in for at least 5 minutes before rinsing.

A good Dry Shampoo for those days you dont have time to shower is a God Send or simply to spruce up your hair on No-Poo days. Remember to comb your hair after applying it cause this stuff can really cake up on your hair if you start to sweat.

Since my hair is so short its really hard to follow most of the instructions of hair regimens (theres a big to do about focusing on your roots versus hair shaft in most hair regimens) so I tend to use primarily Co-Washes! I dont have tight curls or coils but Ive found they are very effective at cleaning my hair, moisturizing it, but not stripping it so much that I end up back where I started. Theyre basically conditioners with a few of the sudsy bits of shampoos mixed in. Theyre similar to a 2-in-1 but they err on the side of the conditioner rather than the shampoo. They are much better for healthy hair and scalp.

A couple of my favorite cowashes are: NYM (Im very fond of this brand XD); Mop Top (if you dont mind a brand thats not in stores) or As I Am (This is the only CoWash I do not follow up with a light conditioner as coconut oil is very heavy on my hair).

With thinner hair its best to try and avoid products with heavier oils that are slow to absorb like Coconut and Olive oils; I would only suggest these if you are going to do something after your shower that will involve intense heat like curling or straightening irons. Products with lighter oils like Argan and Grapeseed will absorb more quickly and wont leave thin hair feeling greasier but will still moisturize it. Jojoba Oil tends to have properties of both and is a good middle ground.

Even tho I use co-washes, there are still surfactants in them and a light conditioning afterwards works wonders for sealing the deal. My fave conditioners usually have really light oils in them because my hair is prone to getting weighed down: Argan Oil Conditioner (my current go to particularly because it has more of a cedar wood and patchouli scent instead of typically floral scents); Argan Oil and Lavender (this one can leave a rather strong girly floral scent in your hair but its absolutely lovely); Leave In Spray or Leave in Milk (And if your hair is being an absolute pain about being weighed down, never underestimate a nice light leave in spray or milk. A little bit goes a long way for conditioning temperamental hair).

---

The best part is that a lot of these tips can also be applied to the skin of your face too. Too oily? Your showers may be too hot or the soap/astringent you are using may be to HARSH and are stripping everything away, good and bad. Try something lighter like a Toner. Moisturizing after washing your face can be important. Some toners also moisturize lightly (like Rose Water Toners) but if youre still feeling a bit dry, light moisturizers made for facial skin can be a nice way to finish up a shower routine!

Also Always remember to wash you pillow cases regularly!

---

The most important thing to remember is that changing the chemistry of your hair and skin routine can take a bit of time to settle in so you might not see a change immediately. Id say give it at least 1-2 weeks to really see if things start clearing up and if they dont keep track of the changes and adjust and try different products. its a bit of a pain in the wallet, believe me, I went thru half a dozen or so different products before I narrowed it down to a couple things: coconut oil was too heavy for my hair and jojoba oil was to slow absorbing for my skin but Argan Oil and Rose Water are a true delight; Im allergic to Salicylic Acid and thats a huge ingredient in a lot of products and acne medications; and my skin is Combination so it can vacillate wildly between oily and dry states. I did find a nice set of products tho that get the job done eventually! I hope you can find some faves yourself!

OK. I think our hair types are similar. I now have long hair, but I've been growing it out from a pixie cut for a little under two years, so I've recently experienced the frustration of not knowing how to style mid-length hair. After a lot of research, here's what I've found works well for me at most lengths:

  • Clarifying shampoo. My hair gets stringy throughout the day, and if you start out with buildup from products and pollution, that's only going to exacerbate the problem. Using a clarifying shampoo basically gives you a clean slate every day. I use this Neutrogena stuff, but any old brand will do.
  • Paul Mitchell 'The Conditioner' Leave-In Treatment. This is the only conditioner I use, and I use it no more than twice a week. It's a high-protein leave-in treatment and it makes my hair feel strong and smooth, but my stylist warned that using it too often can dry out your strands.
  • Joico JoiLotion (formerly Joico I.C.E.) Sculpting Lotion. If I'm planning to style my hair, I'll use a little of this with The Conditioner. It gives a really nice shiny depth to my strands and it adds a little extra support to styles.

When I use all this stuff in a blow-dry routine (I use a newer Conair hairdryer with a cool shot button and a 2" stiff-bristle round brush), my hair looks awesome all day, and taking those steps also prep your hair for more complex 'dos. (Really, though, you're passing a lot of dirt and grease into your locks with your hands, so you should try to break the habit of playing with your hair all the time.)

As far as styles go, I found the tutorials at Hair Romance inspiring. Her e-book, "30 Hairstyles in 30 Days", is $10 and has great step-by-steps and instructions for many useful techniques that I've used to create original styles. FYI, her hair is on the thicker side and has a lot of texture, so you might want to do as I did and acquire and learn to use the following:

  • Teasing comb and styling brushes. As long as your hair is healthy, this is the best way to add lasting volume to your hair at the root and create the illusion of having more and longer hair in ponytails and updos. If you can master teasing, you can get away with many styles that otherwise would only work with longer hair. (It's also a must for over-the-top 'dos for Hallowe'en!)
  • Texturizing products like OSiS Dust It! Mattifying Powder and ABL Pre Game sea salt spray. They'll help your hair grab onto itself and add extra hold without weighing down fine hair.
  • Small barrel clipless curling wand. I just picked up this Remington on the cheap at Target; I don't expect it to last forever, but it gets up to high heat (400+) and the texture lasts about three days without washing (respectively, curly; very wavy; somewhat wavy).

There are lots of great hair tutorials around the internet, too. Google around, or search "DIY hair" and "hair tutorial" on Pinterest. Go nuts!

Whew! I know there's a lot here, so let me know if you have questions. Good luck!

Here’s an example of a good curl smoothie! It’s just usually full of good things for curly hair, used like a leave-in, I just rake it into my hair directly after my shower before I squeeze out the excess moisture with a towel, super easy. Just helps with moisture and other benefits, keeping your hair from getting frizzy and keeping it nice and soft! You might also like trying out deep conditioners once a week or so, too. You just put it on in the shower, put a shower cap over your hair instead of washing out, and then do the rest of your shower stuff and wash it out last. Gives your hair protein and other good stuff, the shower cap helps the deep conditioner penetrate your hair by keeping your head heat in, it works best with “heat”, even natural heat.

Best of luck! You look super cute with your curls right now, so it can really only get better from here, haha.

u/gardengreenbacks · 1 pointr/curlyhair

Start with No brushing. No shampoo. Avoid heat styling.
Use fingers or wide tooth comb when co-washing. My hair is pretty different from yours, but I just started using Tresseme naturals and it is really affordable, super moisturizing and has great slip (easy to detangle). It also is a great leave-in. Not as shiny as I would like, but doesn't look dirty and doesn't weigh down the curl, yet really tackles the frizz. I also used the As I Am coconut co-wash and liked it, but it isn't as moisturizing and it is no good as a leave-in. My hair is thick, coarse and goes to my mid/upper back and I use several pumps (5-6) when it is really wet as leave-in. I plop when wet because it is long, but might be good for you to plop/wrap in a microfiber towel to minimize movement while drying so it keeps the curls together?

Good luck!! Hope you find a combination that works!

You guys are honestly boosting the SHIT out of my self esteem haha especially now with this hair question. I have been fighting with my hair all my life and just recently am I starting to accept it, so I'd be happy to talk about it.

The first step was coming to terms with the fact that I'll never have "easy" straight, moldable hair. My hair is pretty wavy and VERY frizzy, and it takes a lot to tame it...but I'll let you in on my secret weapon: the "It's A Ten" line of product.

It's a godsend. Every day I condition with this, I shampoo only once or twice a week (since my hair is already naturally dry and shitty) with this, and on days that I shampoo I put this in after to curb the inevitable frizz. All their stuff is kind of expensive but since I only have a few inches of hair it lasts me for EVER.

After I shower I sorta pat my hair dry. Tussling it dry with a towel poofs it up, damages it, and encourages frizz, so I just pat and let it air dry. Before it's fully dry and it has frizzed up I put in some high-hold medium-shine pomade (Suavecito and Layrite are my favorites) and style it as such!

Oh, and if you're a guy then I can't recommend this enough: get a great barber and stick with him. Not only is it a cool relationship, but a good haircut makes everything way easier. Plus, the more you go to them the more they understand your hair, so it only gets better!

If you actually read this novel about how I do my hair, I am rewarding you with this picture of my hair when I was like 15. Pretty scary.

Morning Routine:

Take shower. Use conditioner [1] on beard as well as hair. Shampoo/condition early in shower, allow conditioner to soak in while washing body. Rinse conditioner out of hair as the LAST THING you do.

Apply day cream [2] to non-shaved areas of my face before shaving to lock in shower moisture. Use liberally, allow to soak into skin over shave.

Head straight to sink, apply MR GLO [3] to wet face by rubbing the bar on my whiskers, massage in with fingers (no washrag) for ~30 sec with hot water. Rinse 70% of it off, leaving no lather but keeping the slickness.

Normal lather/shave [4].

Rinse, pat dry, apply Witch Hazel [5] with Cotton Rounds. Let sit while I clean up the sink.

Rub in mostly dried off WH, apply Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm [6].

Evening Routine:

Take shower.

While conditioning hair, use gentle exfoliant [7] on face (daily).

Leave shower, pat face dry, apply extra hydrating night cream [8] to face.

Add extra body lotion [9] to behind ears, back of neck, and other dry areas like elbows, knees, shoulders. Dry neck and behind the ears is not to be neglected.

Use Retinol anti-aging night cream [10] on areas to prevent wrinkles, such as smile lines, crow's feet, under eyes, and forehead. A little goes a long way.

Sleep, repeat.

Note: I'm only 27, but you can never start anti-aging skincare too young. I wish I would've started it sooner. If I would have started this regimen at 18, I might not have the hint of crow's feet that I do. Remember that, you young'ins. It's expensive, but your face will thank you later.

Products Used:

  1. Organix Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo/conditioner
  2. Neutrogena Deep Moisture Day Cream SPF 20
  3. MR GLO Orange Amber
  4. Stirling Coniferous (if this counts)
  5. Thayer's Unscented Witch Hazel
  6. Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm
  7. Yes To Carrots Nourishing Exfoliating Cleanser
  8. Yes To Carrots Nourishing Repairing Night Cream
  9. Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion
  10. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer - Night

edit: it should be noted that I shave daily. Even sundays, haha. I avoid trouble spots ATG, where I'm prone to sensitivity, mostly the bottom half of my neck, where I only ATG one small patch by my Adam's apple. The skin is tougher there.

double edit: Don't worry about being Bateman. You almost never find someone who has a beautiful face that doesn't put in that much effort. A few of my friends (San Francisco, mind you) use concealer and a light facial powder to get rid of some shine and even out color, myself included on occasion. You can hardly tell if you use Physician's Formula mineral powder as a very light coat. Nobody will ever know, and you'll be WAY more attractive. Not kidding you, the stuff is invisible, but does its job.

I guarantee you, especially famous people wear makeup all the time so they can be photo-ready. Normal plebians like you and I are no exception.

I know, the number of Shea Moisture products is overwhelming. I did a bunch of research before I bought their products. I'd say that the internet's favorite styling products are these:

  • The Curl Enhancing Smoothie. This is more like a leave-in than a gel. It's a nice and heavy product, which I really like. It has some protein in it. My hair is protein sensitive and it's too much for regular use.
  • Moisture retention conditioner. This is super moisturizing and protein free. It's a bit lighter than the smoothie. The advantage of this product is that you can use it as a leave-in or rinse out or deep conditioner. I've gotten great results from using it as a leave-in. I'm using it less lately because I think it made my hair over-moisturized. Like it feels too soft now.
  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil Reparative Leave-In Conditioner. I've never tried this but it's well loved. It has a lot of protein which some people like.
  • If you want something lighter, the new Fruit Fusion Mousse is well liked. (Not to be confused with the 10 in 1 super fruit line.) I've never used this product either but I want to try it.

I love Disney! When you wish upon a star!

Favorite Disney movie is Mary Poppins. I just love her. I grew up watching the movie. I used to dress up like her when I was a kid and carry an umbrella around. I love the music, the cartoon parts, the story, all of it!

Favorite song might have to be I'll Make A Man Out of You from Mulan. It's just so much fun.

Item: pony tail holders!

I also love Toy Story. Thanks for the contest :)

Love this idea! Maybe once we grow a bit more we can do more specific threads, too. This sub has been a wealth of information already, I love it.

Hair
Description: I have long curly hair. My goal is to keep it voluminous on top, and not-frizzy with defined loose corkscrews on the bottom. Similar Similar I do the "no-poo"/Curly Girl Method method which eliminates sulfates and silicones.

Tresemme Naturals Moisturizing Conditioner: I used to be a firm believer in using expensive hair care products exclusively. I used Redken for many years, then wandered into DevaCurl territory when I started No-Poo. Nothing was able to detangle, soften, and moisturize my hair just right, until THIS!

Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner I use this as a leave-in conditioner. Gels and mousse have worked similarly, but my husband hates the crunchy feel. This holds my curls, yet keeps them soft and touchable.

Skin
Description: I'm 25, used to tan, but after noticing a sun spot, I stopped! Since then, I've been focused on anti-aging and taking good care of my skin.

Biore Sunscreen SPF 50 this is the product that changed my life and stopped my skin from aging. Not greasy, no whitecast, sits well under makeup. I can't recommend Asian sunscreen enough, and this one is my favorite!

Perfume
Elizabeth and James Nirvana White "peony, chic muguet, and tender musk for a feminine scent with dark sophistication" so lovely. The first perfume my husband stopped to specifically comment on! Honorable mention to Nirvana Bourbon as well. In fact, has anyone here tried the Nirvana Rose? I'm interested but unfortunately don't have a way to smell it for free where I live!

u/blue_eyes13 · 3 pointsr/AskMen

I have wavy hair (24 f though) but I know it can be a pain in the butt to deal with regardless of length. The more you fight the natural texture of your hair the more work you'll be doing to maintain it and honestly it usually looks better with your natural texture. The best thing I've found to use on it is the wax/paste because it gives you definition but doesn't make it crunchy. My favorite kind is garnier fructis surf wax but they also make something specifically for men that's by suave. The garnier one smells fruity and the men's one smells more fresh (I've used it before- it's pretty nice). For my long hair I scrunch it, might be a different technique for men. I would look to Robert Downey Jr or Patrick Dempsey for good styles that I personally find attractive.

u/mindfulkindness · 2 pointsr/HaircareScience

I hope it helps! I know the pain all too well. I too abuse hot water. Not warm, hot, as hot as I can stand it until I turn into a lobster. I have learned that's a nono so if I want to scald my skin I wear a shower cap or at least pull my hair away to keep the hot water off.

So here is my shampoo and conditioner(erm, I don't know why it's $45 for a 2pack, you may need to try a different variety or vendor, should be about $6 each), very affordable and I am very happy with all aspects. Here is the leave in conditioner I use -- it is the only I have tried so no basis for comparison but I like it. I use about a dime size on my palm mixed with 4-5 drops of Argan oil then kind of rub my palms together to spread it out and run it very lightly through my hair (usually with my head upside down so it is easier to access the different parts). The key is to spread it lightly and evenly.

Also, I am a guy who always had short hair prior and didn't care about products etc. Well now I have shoulder length hair (it's fabulous!) and I can see how much trouble it is to have long beautiful locks! I had to relearn how to properly shampoo and condition, well more condition than shampoo. Just make sure you again spread the conditioners evenly (I even squeeze some excess water out with my hands so it is less runny) and let it sit for 2-3 minutes as I wash the rest of me.

All these tips have come from reading Reddit, I should add! So cheers to our community. The next trick I want to try is a satin wrap for my hair when I sleep, it is supposed to be great!

u/ATLxLBC · 2 pointsr/NoPoo

Hey fellow Indian male, I've had mostly short hair for the past 10 years but last year I started growing my hair out and I ran into similar issues. I started using sulfate-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioner about 5 years ago, and after the initial grease period I found myself getting away with only having to use shampoo and conditioner once a week if I washed my hair daily while it was short.

More recently, I've actually switched to water only and it's been pretty good so far! I also started washing my hair every other day instead of daily.

But like I mentioned, I started growing my hair out last year and my hair began to get greasy again like yours. What I've been doing more of is following the advice I found here. I had never heard of terms like scritching and preening before, but thankfully I was already doing them to some extent naturally.

The big difference for me came from combing regularly. With short hair I never really bothered with a comb, but now with longer hair it's very much a necessity. I recently invested in some nice Kent combs and they work so much better than the cheap plastic comb I was using for a while.

The other game changer for me was using a t-shirt to dry my hair after washing it. It's incredible how much less tangled my hair is purely from that change alone.

I also grabbed a boar bristle brush, but with thick, wavy hair it's really not that useful, so I wouldn't recommend getting one if your hair is similar.

Hopefully this is helpful!

u/greengirl2 · 1 pointr/blackladies

Hi.

You seem to have the same hair texture as me, very stubborn and difficult to manage and can get very frustrating.
Any cheap conditioner will do- I prefer Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner with Peppermint for co-wash as it lathers really well and makes my hair squeaky clean.

This is what works for me and its made my hair manageable, soft and very healthy:

Shampoo hair once a month with organix hair shampoo does not strip or dry my hair, but there are other cheaper shampoos you can use.

co wash with Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner with Peppermint twice or three times a week. Be generous with this,
always use a widetooth comb, you can get this at walmart

Cantu leave in conditioner works wonders in keeping my hair soft and moistened, i apply this after patting my hair dry then i use coconut oil (my hair loves this as its light but easily absorbed) to lock the conditioner in and cream of your choice, shea products work better for my hair type.

I deep condition my hair every other week or once a month just before i wash with shampoo, either i do the deep oil conditioner (olive oil, jojoba, castor oil with tea tree oil) or the mayo route.

Go to you tube and type in taking care of natural 4b/4c hair and there are lots of tips there.

As i mentioned this is my routine and it took a lot of tries but i finally found something that worked and most importantly did not break the bank.

Thank you! It’s super fun to play with. Sometimes I fauxhawk it, but I’ve been wearing it down a lot recently.

I use Layrite Natural Matte Cream. It provides good hold without being rigid, and it smells super great.

Your pictures are pretty much exactly what I'm dealing with now, too. Have you figured out anything?

I needed shampoo/conditioner so I sorted Amazon results by highest rated and tried this brand out of the blue. I really like how silky smooth it makes my hair. Best I've found yet.

After showering, when hair is 3/4s dry, I use a small amount of this Argan oil to reduce drying out.

Then, I evenly apply a small amount of some hair product. Something light enough that the hair can still move naturally, but with a little hold so the thinning doesn't get frizzy. I have yet to find one I'm really happy with, but of everything I've tried, the best so far was this cream.

After researching a bunch more just now, I think the best product would be a wax. It's more matte than the cream.

I have thick wavy/curly hair, and I use [Layrite Natural Matte Cream](Layrite Natural Matte Cream, 4.25 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GIW9842/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_V5-SBbCTVX0CB). It works really great for me, but I blow dry my hair so that helps me a lot. If you’re looking for something that’s gonna keep it in place try the clay. I’m sure many other people have much better products, but the cream is my favorite right now. Note that having dry hair allows for a stronger hold with less shine. If you want a more loose hold with more shine, apply it when your hair is damp. Would highly recommend a blow dryer because it honestly takes 5-10 min.

u/peppernight · 1 pointr/HaircareScience

Hey OP!

Congrats on the good genes! I have long thick black hair too and started the following regimen which really helped me:

  1. Wash twice a week, before washing, use ayurvedic hair oil for at least 2 hours (ideally overnight), wash with ayurvedic shampoo and hemp conditioner. Wash always with warm and never with super hot water.

  2. Comb hair with a wide toothed wooden comb for detangling and a finer one for styling. I like this wide comb and I can't find the tail one (maybe they don't sell them on the US website, I bought them from Europe). I cannot recommend this wooden comb enough, it has single handedly reduced so much hair fall and also improved the distribution of oils.

  3. I have relatively dry hair so I usually style it with this serum before leaving the house. I never use this on my scalp.

  4. My PM routine is basically massaging the scalp with some pure argan oil and a few drops of rosemary oil (rosemary is great for increasing blood circulation to the scalp and increasing hair growth), and sometimes some tea tree if I spot a bit of dandruff (tea tree is said to reduce dandruff). Then I just throw it into a loose braid

  5. I forget to do this every 6 weeks but once every 2-3 months I just trim off the split ends with a pair of hair scissors. Regular craft scissors are too blunt, don't use those.

  6. Misc: Eat clean and healthy, and give your scalp a massage for 3-4 minutes every night, don't go crazy with all the colouring and keratin treatments, stay away from things that aren't natural. Change pillowcases at least once a week.

Those would be my top tips! Hope that helps xx

A couple years ago I deployed to Guam where I would start my day with a wet bun in uniform, then after work we’d go to the beach to swim and snorkel, and then frequently out to town in the evening for dinner. My hair felt awful from wetting it three times a day, but I couldn’t deal with the salty sandy tangles that happened after wearing a snorkel mask.

I bought some As I Am coconut Cowash and it made my hair for that entire deployment so much better- soft enough to be gentle on my tangles, but still great for actually cleaning my bleached, salty hair. They used to sell it at Sally’s only, but I’ve seen it at drugstores lately too. And Amazon of course! Amazon

Best of luck!

u/stizzleswick · 3 pointsr/curlyhair

As far as haircuts go, you may have to call around your area for an Ouidad official hairstylist, or just someone who knows specifically how to cut curly hair (not someone who straightens your hair, and then cuts it; a curly hair cut should be done dry and curly.) If you can only go a couple times a year, you can let them know you want a cut that will last for a while.

The Curly Girl Method has helped me out loads! This is the default method, and I and many other people alter it to fit our own personal needs, since everyone's hair isn't the same. It's a great start though!

You can try using a product to help define and tame your curls a bit more. I use Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum and It's A 10 Miracle Leave-In Product. If you want something a bit cheaper, try Frizz Ease Dream Curls Spray. These all help my curls stay defined and non frizzy with lots of character and bounce. :)

Gifting is fun and this contest is awesome. I've got some variety on my Christmas wish-list.

Okay, first, we're going to the electronics. My tablet, named Tabby, is naked. She needs to be a bit more modest with this sassy, but classy, red cover.

Alright now we're getting a little thirsty and it's time to take a quick water break. What's that? You've got a glass but you need a STRAW?? I got choo covered, my friend.

Alright alright back to the list. It's tiiiiiiiiime for some detective work, Watson! Let's look for something for my/our messy hair. 'Cause we look a right, but oh-so-wrong, wreck.

AND boom! The total comes to 19.99 and we've got a penny left over for good luck!

Welcome to the world of product. It's a wonderful thing.

I highly recommend Redken Rough Paste. It doesn't make your hair all shiny or anything, and smells fucking amazing. Also, if you don't go overboard with it, you can't really tell there's anything in your hair. Fantastic product. Typically what I use when going out/somewhere important, as it is a bit pricey.

Otherwise, I actually like Garnier Fructis Surf Hair for day to day wearing. Much cheaper, no smell at all, no sheen or anything, good control, lasts all day, no real scent to it, and does the trick quite well.

The Garnier Fructis one you can get at any drug store, in the US at least, for about the same price as the link I've given here, the Redken stuff, however, will run you close to twice as much if you buy it in stores, so buy online if you can.

u/thatsjustdandy1 · 3 pointsr/beards

It does make a difference. It helps keep the follicles moisturized, preventing your beard from getting dry and brittle, but also keeps your beard soft and more manageable. The different scents they come in are very pleasant as well.

Along with combs, I use these daily, you'll want a good boars hair brush to evenly distribute the oil and also to exfoliate the skin underneath the beard to avoid any dry skin or dandruff.

I started using oil about the 1 month mark and I'm now almost to 5 months in. I've used oil every single day since. Hope that helps get you started at least.

u/AdaptingChaos · 1 pointr/malehairadvice

I would recommend using some argan oil. I personally use this one and apply it to my hair directly after I come out of the shower. What I do is that I take out some of the water with a towel but not all the water. Keep your hair damp pretty much, but not too wet or too dry. Next I apply the argan oil and make sure that it's applied throughout all of my hair and scalp. Then I blow dry on the coolest setting of my blow dryer (I wouldn't recommend going to the hottest setting honestly). And the argan oil (to me at least) gives more control and days my hair into the position I blow dry it in. Then after you can apply some of your products and top it off with hair spray to keep it in place. If you feel that the current hair spray you use tho isn't holding, maybe try a different brand ? May I ask which brand you are currently using?
Anyways, good luck!

u/bearable_lightness · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I recommend trying a ketoconazole shampoo (if you haven't already) and going sulfate-free. For example, a solid routine for active dandruff is Nizoral (1% ketoconazole) a couple times a week and a sulfate-free shampoo like Free & Clear on the days you aren't using Nizoral. Once the active flare up is under control, you can cut back to one application of Nizoral per week for maintenance and then ultimately replace it with Free & Clear Medicated (2% zinc pyrithione - essentially sulfate-free Head & Shoulders).

I used this approach with my last flare up almost 2 years ago, and I haven't had a problem since. I probably only use Free & Clear Medicated every other week or so at this point. Previously, I had been to a derm who prescribed me a 4% ketoconazole shampoo, but I didn't get sustainable results until I switched my "normal" shampoo to a super gentle, sulfate-free option.

If you find yourself having issues, I highly recommend not only washing it regularly, but get yourself a beard brush. I grabbed this one for my beard this year and it was the best it has ever been. One side is soft enough to be comfortable, but the other is practically wire. Does a great job keeping the pores clear and keeping the skin fresh under all that manliness.

Edit: Deleted comment essentially compared beards to dreads and said they cause pimples and various other skin issues. Just thought I would throw the advice out there if anybody had similar problems. And this will hopefully be the last time I throw out hygiene advice on an MMA forum.

I swear by dry shampoo! I always have it on me for post-workout or when I'm out camping. I have really thick hair which gets super gross very easily. In the past I've used this and it worked great. I'm currently in love with No Drought from Lush. Great product and it doesn't dry out my scalp like the aerosol cans do.

9-5'er checking in- I've been working out 7-8 am, M-F for the last ~3 months and I love it. (never thought I'd say that lol!)

I can actually get ready for work faster at the gym than at home because of the lack of distractions. I'm asking for a gym bag for Christmas, because all of this crap does not fit in any single bag that I own lol. I bring a towel, turbi-twist, toiletry bag with shampoo/conditioner/face wash/body wash/razor, hanging toiletry bag with heat protectant spray/deodorant/body spray/moisturizer/cotton swabs, makeup bag, straightener, body lotion, dry shampoo (clean freak for the days I don't wash my hair, shower shoes, and small zippered bag for my jewelry. I keep extra pairs of undies in a small pocket of my bag, and should probably actually keep an entire change of clothes in my car. I have forgotten underwear, bra, and towel before (not all on the same day, haha!). It's super important to prepare everything the night before. I lay my towel out in the backseat of my car during my work day so it dries. I keep my work clothes folded in my bag overnight and during my workout, and I haven't had a problem with wrinkly clothes, I guess partly because of the type of fabrics I wear (drapey tops and jersey knit skirts).

Sorry for the stream of consciousness lol. I am a huge advocate of the before-work workout.

Yes, straightening seems to be a thing the little ones hate. I grew up in Dominican Republic where the blow drying culture is real strong. Like on an island with rampant power outages, there will always be power at the hair salon XD No one knew or cared about curly hair until maybe the last 5 years I feel.

You can start with something small like Hask Argan Oil Vial. In fact, get the shampoos and conditioners from HASK (they are very affordable) The lines I like are the coconut milk and the honey yogurt line. You can find so many options in Walgreens. As a general rule though, try to stay away from the shampoos/conditioners with oils stated in their names ( coconut oil, monoi oil, argan oil). We tend to think oil will nourish hair and put lots of it on, but then it works against us by weighing the hair down. Slowly incorporate it in other products only if the hair is still looking dry. Additionally Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel and Its a 10 Leave In.Be aware though that you might want to buy this one in stores. People do take the product out and fill the bottle with cheap conditioner and return it. If you try it and its a dud, go back to the store and exchange it. You'll know when its the real deal. -- Also when you apply leave-in you want to spritz 2-3 times in your hand, spread it, feel is it enough, and then maybe add more.

You can ask me any beauty questions \^_\^ I know all the things

u/the_karmapolice · 1 pointr/FancyFollicles

Definitely go for it! I had loooooong hair, and I showed that exact picture to my stylist last fall and went for it. Honestly I haven't looked back once!

I'm pretty lazy with my hair, so I picked up a tub of this stuff. After I get out of the shower I just get a tiny gloop of it on my finger and run it through my bangs and it gives it the perfect wispy texture. Good luck!!

This stuff maybe the light or protein less version?

Also try Argan oil or coconut oil to soften your hair a bit. Be careful with coconut oil though. It can mold if you're constantly dipping your hand and fingers into it. I find it best to keep it in the fridge and use a spoon to scoop out a small bit, rub it between your hands to melt it then through your hair.

Personally, I like the crisco brand cooking coconut oil. It has almost no scent. And it worked well on my hair. Coarse and thick hair.

Also look into getting sulfate and phosphate free shampoos and conditioners.

u/swolkyrie · 2 pointsr/Hair

Good on your for not shampooing every single day! (daily shampooing is very drying). Slightly higher quality shampoo/conditioner could be really helpful. I used suave when I was a kid, and it always made my hair feel dry and course. (I use organix. Sulfate free and you can get it cheaper at walmart!). Also, a leave in conditioner or curl cream could help tame some of the frizz and make your hair lay a bit smoother.

Now the one I use all the time is this:

u/DrLOV · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

> I apparently have mild allergies to yeast, bread and the like (which is interesting since it's theorized that an overzealous skin-yeast might be one cause of SD)

Yeast does not just mean the stuff you use to make bread. The yeasts that can contribute to skin problems are totally different than Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the yeast used for bread and beer brewing. There are hundreds of different types of fungi that can colonize your skin, Saccharomyces isn't one of them. I'm a medical mycologist, sorry, but it's a big pet peeve of mine!

For OP: Nizoral is also a really good one to use for SD. I also have it and have found a few things that really make a difference. First, SD can be caused by over production of oils. We often react to what looks like dry flakey skin by using heavy moisturizers and things like that when we need to dial back a bit. My dermatologist recommended Free and Clear products for me. They make a facial cleanser and moisturizer. Also, drink a lot of water and wash your face twice a day. I find that if I skip a washing, it makes it worse. Hope this helps!

I got this brush.

The soft side is...well useless. I use it to brush away hair if I'm trimming, but that's all it's good for.

The boar bristle side was good for the 'stache, but as my beard gets longer (about three months now) it really can't reach down to the bottom of the beard.

I'd go with something longer. (bristle length) I got another one from my wife that does that job (she didn't want it, "too scratchy")

Wish I could be more help.

The shampoo depends mostly on your scalp. If it’s normal and healthy, you can get away with using any shampoo. If you have a scalp issue like dryness, dandruff, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis…etc you’ll need to use a shampoo designed to tackle that particular issue.

[I have an extremely dry scalp (gross, I know) and I really like these two shampoos: 1 2 ]

I have suuuuper curly hair and was previously using a long sleeved t-shirt to plop my hair, but I have since moved on to a Turbie Twist. It's microfiber and is perfect for starting the drying process without crushing or snagging my curls, and it's great for keeping my hair out of my face when I do my routine/makeup!

u/IcemanBlizz · 1 pointr/FierceFlow

The praying hands method can elongate curls slightly, heavier products can also do something similar. That said, more substantial elongation usually requires weighing down the curl clumps while they dry and the effect is only temporary. As your hair gets longer, it will be heavier and may also elongate your curls. Permanently elongating the hair requires chemically treating it which will damage the hair, but it won't be curly until new growth happens.

Frankly, I'd go for thicker curls in your hair rather than trying to elongate them. The thicker variety will be heavier. A curl cream can help your hair clump into thicker curls and may elongate them a bit. Layer a gel over it to hold the curl shape. What I do, is put product in and scrunch my hair a few times to make it coil up, then put it into a microfiber turban (I like Turbie Twist) for about 15 to 30 minutes before letting it out and finish air drying naturally for a few hours. I have a lot of hair so it takes a while to air dry. You can try the technique I mention in my post, it's a bit more involved but you can skip some of it.

As for creams, you can try Camille Rose Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, which is lighter, or Eden Bodyworks Natural Curl Defining Cream, which is heavier.

Does anyone have a hot styling brush like this? My hair is fine and thinning, 95% straight, past my shoulders, and needs volume. I am a hair idiot, whenever I try to blow dry (even if I try sectioning, using a round brush and various products, etc) I end up with tons of flyaways and frizz, so I usually just let it air dry overnight and hope for the best. I’m hoping a product like this will give me a quick way to get volume and reduce flyaways in the morning on mostly dry hair.

Routine:

Co-wash with Tresemme Botanique Nourish + Replenish with Coconut Milk and Aloe Vera . I apply enough to be able to get a medium comb through it while showering and remove the stragglers (my hair is super thick, so my wall is usually plastered with fallen hair after I finish). I let the conditioner sit while I finish bathing and rinse completely with cold water.

After showering, I wrap it all in a towel turban and dry for 15-30 minutes. When my hair is fairly damp, but not dry, I apply a generous amount of SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and work gently through from tips to root.

Immediately after, I apply DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel (or Garnier Fructis Style Pure Clean Styling Gel) and let my hair air dry.

Once it’s all finally dried completely, I gently scrunch out the gel and style my hair as necessary.

I just put it in my hair while wet before bed (just pour on your hands and rub your hands through your wet hair, I also comb/brush my hair back after), and when I wake up my hair is proper thick. Then in the morning i wash it normally and blow dry and its epic.

I actually bought it to try make my hair shiny and improve the look of it but it added so much volume as well.

You cam also achieve decent results just with a good conditioner, just keep it in your hair for long, stay in the shower longer than normal. Then blow dry afterwards. But the oil for sure adds a next level to it.

u/refugefirstmate · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Change your shampoo. I recommend OLX Moroccan Argan Oil. These bottles will last you a long, long, long time because they're concentrated.

https://www.amazon.com/OGX-Organix-Morocco-Shampoo-Conditioner/dp/B00OU0IHQU/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1518576240&sr=8-6&keywords=ogx+moroccan+argan+oil+shampoo&dpID=516pMIGuCIL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

You don't have to wash your hair every time you shower; you can just shampoo a couple times (or less) a week and either just rinse it between times or use a "co-wash" like this stuff:

https://www.amazon.com/Pantene-Pro-V-Truly-Natural-Co-Wash/dp/B00IOYI1LO/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1518576347&sr=1-1&keywords=pantene+cowash&dpID=41R9M-11-FL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Stop rubbing your hair with that towel! Just squeeze your hair with it. Yeah, it's still going to be pretty damp. Now rub a couple drops of this on your palms:

https://www.amazon.com/OGX-Renewing-Penetrating-Sustainable-Ingredients/dp/B005DYJZ7M/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1518576435&sr=1-4&keywords=argan+oil+of+morocco&dpID=412vEqXkxwL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

and wipe your palms on your head and then comb your fingers through your hair.

Done! Oh, you want styling products?

https://www.amazon.com/Pantene-Natural-Defining-Styling-Packaging/dp/B012DD93QI/ref=sr_1_1?srs=7301146011&ie=UTF8&qid=1518576516&sr=8-1&keywords=pantene+custard

Scoop up about a teaspoon of this, rub it between your hands, bend over, and then squeeze this into your hair, moving your hands around to make sure you get all your hair. Yeah, sounds weird, but it really works better than rubbing it in. Now finger-comb, and let dry.

Sorry for no formatting, on mobile. I have this and it works really nicely. If my hair isn't damp when I want to use the styler, I just spray down my hair a little to dampen it. However, It doesn't spin. I actually like that it's not moving because I'm super careful with my hair. It allows me to control how fast it moves through my hair. This may be a great option if you're looking for more bouncy volume.

It's also in drug stores like CVS but it's ~$35 there.

u/not-rob · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

What kind of hair do you have?

I try to avoid that look, but I often end up with it when I use this stuff, Garnier "Surf Hair" paste. It works well as a thickener for fine hair (me) and responds poorly to being blow dried with hot air. That "poor response" results in floppy, bunchy hair that behaves as though it's wet. Might be worth a try.

But for the love of god, don't listen to the guys telling you to not wash your hair everyday.

I decided a while back to stop fighting my curls with gel and short haircuts. It's been going well and get compliments and surprise from friends and family. Those who haven't seen me in a while are totally confused and have asked if I've gotten a perm!!! I guess I have two questions

First: I'd like to go for the Jon Snow look if possible. I've been letting my hair grow and grow and grow. Now it feels like an afro-mullet combo. How should this hair be cut while it's still growing out? I get frustrated with stylists/barber/etc as I want an expert or at least someone with experience to guide me through this instead of asking what I want. "I don't know... that's why I'm asking you..." I don't want my hair ruined by someone guessing or going off of my unqualified instruction.

---

Second: At the end of the day, it gets frizzy/puffy (see the last pic in the album). I've tried not showering and it ends up looking greasy. How do you get smooth curls that aren't greasy or crunch due to gel?

---

Daily Routine:

  1. Warm/hot shower with Shampoo and Conditioner from Costco.
  2. Dry with a cotton t-shirt while hanging my head upside down
  3. I'll apply Shea Curl Enhancing Smooth or Shea Curl & Style Milk

You might want to switch to the Natural version of the TRESemmé conditioner (on Amazon) - the normal version has silicones in it, which coat the hair shaft and can promote that oily feeling after the first day. It's also why the clarifying shampoo + deep conditioner didn't need dry shampoo - I'm betting the conditioner you used was silicone free.

u/logosolos · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

I highly recommend Argon Oil. I use it ever couple days and it keeps my hair nice and soft. My daughter uses it as well and her hair is like straw, makes it less "crunchy"

there is an easy to obain(at least in the U.S., not sure about elsewhere) hair care product that takes care of the yellow plastic. Video below is of "The 8 Bit guy" using it with before and after results.

I think he just needs to keep at it. Grooming wise I recommend combing that stache with something like https://www.amazon.com/Kent-Mens-Handmade-Comb-Set/dp/B00KS6QQEU/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1498197688&sr=8-3&keywords=kent%2Bcomb&th=1 and using a beard conditioner like https://www.amazon.com/Honest-Amish-Beard-Balm-Conditioner/dp/B009NNFB0O/ref=sr_1_9_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1498197845&sr=1-9&keywords=beard+oil. Rub a pinch of that stuff in every morning after a shower and comb a little. Maybe get some trimming scissors to cut any long hairs if he wants to.

u/goddesskali · 2 pointsr/FancyFollicles

This is my favorite that i've tried! http://www.amazon.com/Not-Your-Mothers-Refreshing-Shampoo/dp/B0057NE7NQ

I've also tried this brand and I liked it: http://www.amazon.com/Batiste-Dry-Shampoo-Original-5-05/dp/B000N5S0KE

there are so many different brands and they're usually not too expensive :) those two are my favorite though, because they seem to absorb the most oil and not leave your hair with a lighter look from the spray, and also give it volume!

u/Goldin · 3 pointsr/retrobattlestations

A strong Hydrogen peroxide plus sunlight works wonders on the yellowing. I recently restored a C128D and keyboard.

Can you talk a bit more about the specs and show pics of the hard drive setup? I'm actually fascinated that you were able to hook one up, presumably the sidecar port?

u/caridal94 · 2 pointsr/Hair

Actually, you might be able to wash less. There's a really great dry shampoo that works like a charm. I've got very oily hair myself and used to have to wash mine every other day, but now I've been able to start washing every three days instead due to this stuff. So here, it might work for you.

Also, try a satin pillowcase and try a deep conditioning type of treatment at least once a week. That will definitely help. Make sure you are using a wide tooth comb to brush, and try not to brush hair too vigorously as this will stretch your hair out and cause stress and damage.

One other product you might want to try: here

u/JgJay21 · 1 pointr/Haircare

Nizoral.

Although I haven't used this personally, it seems to have excellent reviews. I learned about from the skincare subreddit as its active ingredient - ketoconazole, addresses the fungus that causes dandruff, the same fungus responsible for fungal acne.

There are Tresemme naturals shampoos that are low in sulfates/silicone free that have worked well for me and are still pretty cheap. This and this have been fine for me.

u/mehphron · 1 pointr/Hair

u/NinjatheClick · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A male model with an amazing beard recommended this to me, and I loved what it did for my beard. The science is that cheap combs can split your ends, make your beard look gross, and rob you of length when you trim the split ends. So these combs do a good job of straightening the hair without splitting it. I use daily and highly recommend.

u/geoffreythehamster · 2 pointsr/malehairadvice

I use this, As I Am Coconut Co-Wash, this stuff just makes my hair a little bit softer and smells a lot better than using nothing, plus it's all natural and has many different oils in there to make your hair even better looking.

u/agent-99 · 6 pointsr/Hair

your stylist likely meant you have many fine, as opposed to course, strands of hair, with many per square inch.
you have thick fine hair as opposed to thin course hair.
i have a couple of clients that have pretty extreme very long hair versions of this, and both have bleached hair.

♢ get it's a 10 spray-in leave-in conditioner to spray in detangle after getting out of the shower

♢ get a wet brush pro to brush it wet after washing, conditioning, rinsing, squeezing out the excess water then spraying in it's a 10

senscience is the deep conditioning moisture treatment i recommend.

both of my clients using these three things now have WAY easier hair to deal with, far fewer tangles.

protip: don't use a "protein treatment" more than once a season. too much protein damages your hair.

u/Waltonruler5 · 1 pointr/beards

Thanks! I use Layrite Natural Matte Cream. It does the trick to hold it in place, but it doesn't really dry out or harden the way gel does. I'm trying to grow the hair out a bit too so it's been nice to have.

u/peachandcopper · 5 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I have this curl wand. This is the only wand I've found that makes my hair hold the curl. I don't even have to use hair spray! And the curls last until the next day. I actually have the waving wand too and love that as well.

u/aquajack6 · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

It's this one, the active ingredient is ketoconazole, which is anti fungal and also anti bacterial. It uses a different active ingredient than Head and Shoulders, which uses zinc.

Have you seen a dermatologist? I really think the spots where no hair is growing warrants a trip to the dermatologist, they can prescribe you prescription strength topicals that would likely help.

u/julia_adams · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

Buy one! They're soo easy to use, but I had to look at a youtube tutorial at first because I couldn't get the hang of the technique. This is the one I bought, and my friend with naturally curly hair always comes over to fix up her curls because it works so well.

u/clips_phrases · 3 pointsr/beards

Well, this is the brush I got for reference. In the picture, the topside of the brush is the stiffer brush and the bottom the softer brush.

Hmm, the softer side is more like light scraping on my face, but I wouldn't call it rough. The stiffer part is definitely scratchy. Perhaps your brush is of the nylon reinforced brush, instead of 100% boar?

  3. I've been making a conscious effort to wash my hair less. It's very difficult for me (I love feeling squeaky clean), but every woman I've ever met who has good hair has told me that she doesn't wash it much. I probably only manage to skip one day per week, but I used to wash my hair twice a day, so it's made a difference.
u/shit_waffle · 1 pointr/curlyhair

Jumping on OP's comment about how you style. I'm a fellow wavy and I just realized this last week by mistake that if I let my hair air dry for a while after a shower (I've started with 30 mins but plan to work up) before applying any products it seems to give my curls more time to 'develop' without product or water weighing them down...anyway just a thought! Also here's some links to the styling products I've been using for a while:

Just chiming in. There are "hair donuts" you can buy specifically for this purpose, but you can also cut the toe out of a sock, roll it up, and use it inside your bun. This method will make the bun bigger, more shapely, and easier to secure.

Something else you might try is a texturizer. It makes your hair more voluminous and less slippery.

I had a similar situation where my scalp was just really really dry. Not dandruff, per se, but no matter what I'd have some flakes towards the front of my scalp for probably about a year on and off. I purchased this shampoo on Amazon and after 4-5 times washing my hair with it the flakes completely went away!!! I still have about 2/3 of the bottle left and if the flakes ever come back I know this stuff will do that trick. Hope this helps!

u/anarttoeverything · 5 pointsr/lifehacks

Get a Turbie Twist if you have long hair. Even shorter drying time!

Set our your outfit for the day the night before. Also pack your bag and your lunch the night before if you bring it to work.

If you're really desperate to save time, brush your teeth in the shower while you're waiting on your conditioner.

Shower the night before--if you really don't want to do that at least wash your hair the night before.

Get a more powerful hair dryer that dries hair faster.

Listen to this dude. He knows his shit. Helped me fix my super dry curly hair too.

Basically curly hair needs to be hydrated way more than straight hair. I now never shampoo, basically only wash with a co-washing conditioner, use argan oil 1x a week or so when it feels dry (like 2-3 drops in damp hair, post shower) and use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie in damp hair to keep the frizz down. Someone suggested it and I found it in CVS. Works wonders.

My girlfriend starting buying sulfate-free shampoos and "natural" conditioners so that she could avoid using harsh shampoos to get them out later. I started using her stuff when mine ran out (I've had the beard itch/druff problem for a while) and surprisingly my beard itch and beardruff problems when away. I'm pretty sure the shampoo's were the cause of the beardruff (they were too effective and removed the oils from the skin as well as the hair) which led to the itching as well.

I always thought the "all-natural" marketing stuff was bs but it makes sense in a way. I would definitely recommend avoiding the shampoo though, especially if you are prone to dry skin.

^ These are the two that we use now. The cowash is a shampoo replacement, but you have to avoid traditional conditioners if you start using it because it's not strong enough to remove them and it will start to build up in your hair, which is why we use the second product as a conditioner since it doesn't contain any heavy duty surfactants.

I use ribbon hair ties. They're a touch more expensive, but they don't do that thing where it gets all stretched out at the elastic, they don't hurt my wrist, they look pretty, and supposedly they don't kink your hair, either (haven't had luck with that one but I have very fine hair that's easily kinked). My two favorites are Free and Clear dandruff shampoo and Nizoral. They both work well for me. The active ingredient in the Free and Clear shampoo is pyrithione zinc, the same stuff that's in head and shoulders, and it's sulfate free. Nizoral's active ingredient is ketoconazole, which is what's used in most prescription dandruff shampoos. It does have sulfates in it, but they make up a much smaller percentage of this formula than they do most sulfate shampoos (listed in the bottom 5 ingredients), and it doesn't leave my hair feeling stripped.

Fwiw, I've tried several shampoos that didn't help. As I Am has an itchy scalp shampoo that actually caused flare ups for me, which I'm blaming on the olive oil in the formula. Jason natural dandruff relief didn't seem to do much either way - even though my skin historically responds really well to sulfur and salicylic acid, this one also had olive oil, and that negated whatever good the active ingredients were doing. Wish I could try the Shea Moisture dandruff shampoo, but that one has olive oil in it too :(

I've tried Neutrogena T/Sal a few times and always got too frustrated to stick with it. I think it would work for me, but it's really thick, which made it such a pain in the ass to get it distributed evenly on my scalp. I also suspect that (at least for me) it takes longer to see results with salicylic acid than with some other anti-dandruff ingredients.

It's a Remington I bought on amazon.
Here it is!

I've gifted more than 60 people. Some of my gifted posts have multiple giftees (due to add-ons or I didn't want to clog the newsfeed) :)

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

How cute!

My item please!

I use one called a Turbie Twist. I'm in Australia and they're available in a Target-like shop called Big W here. I found them on Amazon (let's see how that linking goes!)
I like that there's no elastic around the head so I can wrap them as tightly or loosely as I want depending on what I'm going for, and I can plop into them and then wrap them up.

Yes! I've been plopping like this for a while so I think your lengthy should be fine. I have a couple different versions of a turbie towel mostly so I can always have at least one clean one even if I haven't done laundry in a while. I use the same method for plopping (flip head over and lover curls into the towel) but I wear the towel backwards from the way they show it on the packaging so the twist doesn't muss up my hair.

The microfiber sucks water out of my hair pretty quickly so I don't still have really wet hair when I take it down (which was a big problem for me with a shirt) and it really cuts down on the time it has to be up before I defuse.

Give this a shot. I use it and it keeps a strong, sturdy, and long-lasting hold on my thick and disagreeable hair without making it look greasy.

I know it's kinda pricey but this is what i use. I asked my barber for a product with matte finish & doesn't harden like gel, this is what he recommended. I bought it for my hair & decided to try it in my beard. my beard is about 1 1/2" so i use just about enough to cover my fingertip

Also, if she has trouble with hairties buy some of the ribbon type for her. They come out and hold together curly hair much better.

You can try using Nizoral dandruff shampoo. It is different then head and shoulders (it get rid of fungus). I get dandruff every so often and this usually helps.
