Certainly, happy to answer!

TL:DR: Peat is basically moss and other vegetation that has partially decomposed, and it gives whisky its smoky characteristic. A very peaty whisky is one which tastes and smells very smoky. Laphroaig 10 year old is quite readily available, Lagavulin 16 is very famous largely for Parks and Rec and Nick Offerman and Ardbeg makes many favourites of whisky connoisseurs.

So in the olden days in Scotland, one dried and malted the malt that goes into whisky production by burning what one had at hand. For many, this was peat, since it is taken from the ground and was available across Scotlands wet marshes and other boglands. This peat didn't burn clean though, so the smoke that came off it imbued into the malt going into the whisky, giving the finished product a distinct smoky aroma. This practice persists today, when of course it is no longer done out of necessity but rather because the distillers want that smoky character in their whisky. Oftentimes, a smoky whisky is made using both peated and non-peated malt to regulate and control the smokiness of the finished product, though I'm sure there are distilleries making whisky with 100 % peated malt. The island of Islay off the coast of Scotland is famous for its strong, smoky whisky playing home to world famous distilleries such as Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroiag, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Caol Ila and more. Most of the whisky produced at these distilleries are famous for their very heavy smokiness. There are tons of distilleries in Scotland working with different amounts of peat, and smoky whisky certainly isn't for everyone, but many (me included) also love it. If I were to recommend a mid-range bottle of heavily peated scotch I'd say go Laphroiag 10, and for a scotch with less peat that still has a slight smoke-aroma, I'd go for Highland Park 12. Peating occurs outside of Scotland, in Japan, the US and Ireland (and everwhere else that makes whisky I'm sure, but Scotland is famous for it).

Edit: Oh and for how to drink it, I firmly believe that the best whisky is the one you like to drink, and the best way to drink it is how you like to drink it. I maybe wouldn't recommend doing shots of peaty scotch though, it would probably quickly become overwhelming. Mixed in coke, you get smoky coke, if that's your jam. To fully appreciate and get the taste of the whisky, I would recommend drinking it neat (without ice) in a Glencairn Glass, but it's not required of course. A nosing glass or a small wine glass would accomplish largely the same thing (of concentrating aromas around your nose). Of course, an old fashioned or rocks glass would be super classic and classy, but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't drank fine whisky from a plastic glass before.
I like the cheese platter you might also add some different types of crackers. the two will cleanse your pallet.
For the wines
Merlot is a middle of the road wine, not sharp not sweet good for almost any meat or main dish. would also go well with some Mexican foods
Cabernet is sharp and strong, good for the red sauces Italian foods and dishes strong flavors.
Pinot Noir: is a very nice wine between the mellow Merlot and the sharp cabernet. it is a little sweet and just a tad stronger than the Merlot. It would actually pair with a dessert if need be.
Chardonnay: there is Oaked and unbaked chardonnays. the Oaked uses the Large bulb open topped glass to allow some of that smoky oak to dissipate. the un-oaked are much easier to drink for most. I like Josh brand chardonnay it's smooth and just a slight sweetness to it. very very smooth.
Also, just in the last few years. I learned that the glass really does make a huge difference. for white wine such as an un-oaked chardonnay these are wonderful!

for red wines these work wonderfully I have these

Pinot Gris: dryish sweetish would work well for appetizers, desserts, seafood etc.
Pinot Grigio: sweet soft flavor, would be great for desserts and appetizers. would also pair well with chicken and fish dishes
sauvignon Blanc: fresh fruity but not too sweet. great for seafoods, chicken, appitizers, desserts, chicken, etc...
Moscato: sugary sweet. way too sweet for me! more a wine for those that don't really like wine or to drink wine.
now for your cheese, I would maybe pick a few bottle to sample stay with one color maybe red...
a mixture of cheeses and crackers would be wonderful to sample the different flavors of wines. It can really help you to learn which wines you like. and don't like. you can get rubber corks you can vacuum into the bottle that will keep it fresh
like these: this is what I use

I like your appetizer idea. that sounds yummy..
the blue cheese butter you an make way ahead I freeze mine wrapped in plastic wrap. when I want to use it, I pull from the freezer slice a few tablespoon off and set on a plate to warm. I let it warm to room temp that way when I put it on the hot steak it melts YUMMYY!
I think she is a Very lucky girl to have someone want to work this hard to make a very special dinner and evening for her.
wine, cheese crackers and some soft music!! oh yah!

Cheers sir or madam, and enjoy yourself!
> I'll have to do some research on what to buy and invest in something better.
A Glencairn glass is most popular, but there are others. You can get one for about $10 at some stores or online:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/B003TMCNI8/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/B005LR3P1I/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QX2JMA
> That seems a little pricey, and I don't know if my drinking habits will allow me to stretch a bottle across 6-8 nights.
Scotch is more expensive than bourbon. In my opinion, you won't find much below $50-60 that's well regarded. There are some cheaper options, but you'll run out of them eventually if you want to try something different each time. Additional price increases have started pushing many of the more flavorful malts you'll see recommended on here to $60-$80. That price range will provide you with many options; some of those options are higher proof, so you might be able to drink less or add water to your scotch. The base assumption is that these bottles are all 750 ml.
> So why is it looked down upon?
It's fine, but it's somewhat bland in my opinion. It's the highest volume single malt in the world, so it's mass produced at lowest cost. This is somewhat indicated by its price. To an extent (but not always), you get what you pay for (at this end of the market--not really true at $100+), which is why eventually you'll have to pay more.
> I'm starting to look towards the peaty end of the spectrum. Anything non-respectable there?
By no means are peated scotches the only respectable options. You want a list of non-respectable options? Instead, I would recommend that the Islay single malts are mostly all decent. The least expensive from the distillers are some of the new no-age Bowmores and Laphroaigs, but again you get what you pay for. ~$50 will get you entry-level Laphroaig 10yr and Ardbeg 10yr, which are both very good. Others have recommended a few of the "mystery" single malts or blends, which are a little cheaper but also younger.
All of this is just my opinion. I would also agree with most the other bottle recommendations here, but I chose my favorites to recommend. Ultimately you'll just have to try a few and see where it takes you and come back for more advice if you need it.
I would recommend that you don't necessarily have to rush through many options at once. Instead, focus on your Glenfiddich bottle and getting as much out of it as you can. Get a better glass and keep drinking Glenfiddich over a period of time, because as your palate develops you'll discover new aspects of it. You may have to buy another bottle of it if you're drinking that fast. Then eventually take the plunge and try something else. Rinse, repeat.

Mischief Managed!
So I decided to order my school supplies from a "reputable" magical supply store. I can not believe what happened. So you order by answering riddles and I thought that would ensure that everyone's orders are correct, I guess not....
Riddle the First-Wine or Wine Goblet
Either way, I wonder if this is even considered to be appropriate [drink wear] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HZR94O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=25MSIGOHKX8AU&coliid=I1GX53XQYP0JML&psc=1) in the Great Hall of the RAOA school of magic, merriment and Mischief.
Riddle the Second- Broom
I don't know what they were thinking, I asked for a Firebolt, I will never be able to fly with these. I thought maybe they were just tiny for shipping purposes, but I've tried to use Engorgio to make them bigger, but nothing happens.
Riddle the Third- Hat
I swear I ordered a standard witch's hat. I am not sure how they heard wicker hat.
Riddle the Fourth- Book
They told me that this is one of the most important books of knowledge of our times and I wouldn't be able to pass my muggle studies with out it
Riddle the Fifth- Trunk
I don't even know what to say about this. How am I suppose to get all my supplies/clothes to school in these? I mean sure if I was a guy I am sure they would be pretty comfortable. Note to self, next time use the word Luggage Trunk.
Bonus Riddle- Cape
And last but not least, I just wanted a simple black cape. It's black alright, but unless I am going to be giving haircuts in my common room, I have no idea what to do with this.
That is the last time I order anything from Mundungus Fletcher's Magic Emporium.
So I guess I post my answers here.
4. A book! And well, it is a book about a non-descript wizard. I could learn some very valuable lessons from it.
So this is a wine glass that holds a whole bottle of wine. You may or may not be the kind of person who will need this for drinking, but it is a mad classy way to drink a lot of water. And this being my third year going in, I can tell you that is super important when you are feeding yourself. It is also a fun goofy thing to have, hope your first year is amazing! As I said before it is my third year of undergrad at St. Mary's COllege of Maryland and I am studying Chemistry and Physics as a double major.
My spirit animal
THE BEST WINE GLASS EVER
I use a glass similar to a Glencairn for doing side-by-side comparisons and tastings, but I wouldn't say that they work all that well for true wine glasses.
The Gabriel Glas options are outstanding. The Golds are a staple for me along with the Riedel Vinum Bordeaux and Vinum Burgundy. Between those three glasses, I have everything that I need to maximise my drinking pleasure. If you're wanting something cheaper and that work fairly well for many wines, take a look at Riedel's Ouverture Magnum Red.
I bought this: set of six. I kept four and gave two to a good friend.
Alternatively, if you want just the one, this single is a good price.
Finally, this site sells glencairns with various things on the glass, and they do sell (but are currently out of stock) a glencairn with a reddit alien (snoo) logo on it. It's not to my taste but a lot of people like it. They're a bit more expensive, but they are high quality, not some cheap acid etching. And they have fancy gift box type dealies if you want fancy; a standard box of six just looks like this.
For Reidels, I would ask /u/ipixelpixels for a better opinion than mine!
I love Corkcicle products. The triple insulated glass seems like what you want. Ignore the "perfect for wine" part, it is just as good at keeping things cold and hot. The lid has a sliding part for you to sip on, or insert a straw (I guess it should fit, I never tried it with a straw).
Corkcicle 12 oz Triple-Insulated Stemless Glass (Perfect for Wine) - Unicorn Magic https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RGSPVR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_635kDbGD3RKKK
Also, hopefully you will settle for a reusable straw as well.
The one that I've gone to, twice and a third time next year :), was very much worth it; there were scotches, bourbons, ryes, vodkas, gins, rums, etc everywhere. There was also free apps, loved me the smoked salmon, for days. AND I got to keep the snifter, or Glencairn, that I used throughout the night.
My ticket was $75, for all you can drink, from $1000 bottles, and all you can eat. That really just replaces a couple of weeks worth of going out; it's more than worth it.
Hope yours is similar, both in experience and in price :)
Considering getting a set of Old Fashioned glasses as a gift after my partner was admiring the ones used on Peaky Blinders (tv show). I was looking at this set on Amazon, does anyone have those that they can offer an opinion on? Or can anyone suggest another glassware set that they love (pref.
<$50/4)?
Preferred cocktails: bourbon on the rocks, Manhattan, Old Fashioned, (though we have a well stocked bar and do experiment too)
Priorities: look and feel like actually nice glasses, and he loves the crystal cut, more traditional look.
I personally use the Schott Zwiesel Cabernet glasses at home and they are great. I personally like the design more than Riedel (I have their whiskey glasses as well, and they have a very nice feel).
Pretty much any appropriately designed wine glass will work though. Beyond that, it's personal taste (hah) and the feel of the glass.
$7.60 apiece to anyone with Amazon prime...
I keep ordering them for friends, mostly because I want to have one to use when I'm at their houses... but it makes me look nice.
This $5 mini pitcher is also a great addition...

Cheers!
This contest is awesome sauce!!!
Gabriel Glas machine-made universal. Great for red, white, and sparkling. You can get them for well under your budget for a set of 6, and although they aren't quite as nice as the hand-made versions (or Zaltos), for everyday use they're perfect IMO.
https://www.amazon.com/Gabriel-Glas-99694-Standard-Crystal-Glass/dp/B008437T3G/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1503684880&sr=8-5&keywords=gabriel+glas
I'd love this Dalek stress toy! cause my job is stressful and I'd like to take my aggression out on a cute little dalek!
You should get these wine sticks for yourself because I have them and they are wonderful for camping, bonfires, and the beach!
Zalto and Gabriel Glass are generally considered the two best glasses by most wine geeks. Here is an amazon link for the GG:
https://www.amazon.com/Gabriel-Glas-Austrian-Crystal-StandArt/dp/B008437T3G
Zalto are a lil pricy. But i prefer them to the GG
I am not a materials scientist :), so I have no idea what grade of silicone it is. Are there any health concerns related to lower grades or is it more of a texture, rigidity, and strength rating?
but yeah, I'd personally suggest going with glass if you want to entertain. Or these might be a good compromise.
There are wine glasses that can just barely hold an entire bottle that look surprisingly normal. Just a wee bit bigger visually, but they're like a magic bottomless pit when you pour the bottle in. I'm a fan. Drink like you mean it.
Here's a kinda clunky one:
https://www.amazon.com/DCI-Unique-Entire-Bottle-capacity/dp/B000VKOK6O/
But I've seen them where they're a little taller and narrower (and thus less bowl-y) that don't look at all out of place at a glance.
I would use [this wine glass(http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000O3PZ1M) to help, because I have never been to the snow before and I'm sure I'll be cold. Drinking some wine first would help with that, and then once I've emptied the glass I can use it to scoop snow. Plus, I'm sure I'll appreciate my artistic attempts after I've emptied the glass of wine.
I always recommend these Riedel's - 8 glasses for $60. I've had great luck with them over the last few years and have given them as gifts.
Here are my initial thoughts

Wire cutter the NYT recommendation arm suggests these. https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-wine-glass/
I was looking for of the Bordeaux style with the tapered mouth. But those are $60 each which seems excessive.

Wine Enthusiast has these Fusion infinity which looks like my jam.
https://www.wineenthusiast.com/fusion-infinity-cabernet-wine-glasses-(set-of-4).asp

And Finally these burg glasses from Amazon also look awesome. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LI35EO/ref=psdc_13218541_t2_B00O0V29RW?th=1

So I don't know. Any amazing deals out there that people are looking at?
I am in the US, I got a little better deal than what you can get them on amazon right now and it was a local place so no shipping. The one issue is they did come in the commercial box and not in the retail box. I would say this is the best deal right now.

Single and job hunting, so clearly these wine glasses would be quite helpful ;)
I feel like a lot of this would happen!
Every since I discovered stemless wineglasses I've never liked anything else! After a massive house party, I'm missing all but one :( the thing that's got me pumped and happy this week is starting my DREAM JOB on Monday as a vet tech!!! SO STOKED! Grape
There are some pretty good plastic wine glasses out there that would be fine. I'd go stemless though. https://www.amazon.com/Unbreakable-Stemless-Wine-Glasses-Shatterproof/dp/B00UGUAWNO/
Was a Christmas gift from my lovely GF
http://www.amazon.com/Fred-Friends-Hopside-Down-Glass/dp/B001W35FFY
Water Walking Ball
Ice cubes in stone
Cool beer-glass
World's Largest Giant Gummy Bear
Coffee-mug
An arm-clock might also be a good gift!
If you buy any of these stuff, and he don't like it, just send it to me if he doesn't like it ^ ^
For $50 to $100 I'd stay away from buying them watches. Watches can be a very particular item for people and you don't want the gift to just sit in a drawer if they don't like the specific model you gave them. How about something unique like this:
Whiskey Stones, Whiskey Glass
& an entry level bottle of Pappy Van Winkle
That is an inexpensive gift that even a connoisseur would appreciate.
Yes, for many, many years now. Bust this thing out in front of your friend:

Wine bottle glass
Stainless Steel lunchbox
Water infuser

Thanks for the contest!!
You want a nice glass like this?
Here you go
When I am thirsty I love to drink Coca Cola. I will never drink water when I am thirsty. Unless that water has been converted to tea, lemonade, or koolaid!

Glencairn's free from shows and such. Or amazon.

The Riedel Vinum Extreme Cabernet/Merlot Glasses are a good value when you can find them for $42 for 2.
It's too quiet in here!
And this would make me happy!
Related fact: The term “whisky” is actually derived from the Gaelic words uisage beatha, which in turn came from the Latin Acqua Vitae or “water of life.” It’s thought that the name refers to the fact that whisky was first used by monks for medicinal purposes.
I really wish I had a better story, but I bought a set of 4 of these from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZFCQL4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_TiqdzbBWZJDH7
Schott Zwiesel Tritan Crystal... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LI35EO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Great glasses.
And a proper whiskey glass as well. Looks like a Glencairn, if I'm not mistaken.
One thing that people seem to ignore — which has never made sense to me, though I did start with wine first — is the importance of the cup/glass. ISO tasting glasses like this small one are my preference for espressos and Turkish coffee; for pourovers, I use larger Bordeaux-shaped glasses. Beer tulips work well too — the point is that the top of the glass should taper in, concentrating the aromas. It also feels completely difference as the coffee moves over the rim and hits your tongue, and for that reason I prefer cut-rim glasses.
I'm not sure whether thin glass/crystal could hold up to near-boiling temperatures though — go for the thicker, cheaper glasses.
The US Amazon has them for $6.90 and free shipping if you get $25 of stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/Stolzle-Glencairn-Whiskey-Glass-Boxed/dp/B003TMCNI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320177787&sr=8-1
There are also sets of them on there for a bit cheaper.
Take a crystal candlestick holder, neatly epoxy it to the base of the mason jar giving it a stem. WA-LA - redneck wine glass cheaper than in the store too! You can then fill it with a bottle opener, cork screw opener and some other randoms.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Original-RedNek-Wine-Glass/dp/B004HZR94O
Lol this one should be good for you :D Big Mouth Ultimate Wine Bottle Glass :D Why settle for less when you can gulp down more? :D
10 Practical Speed Skating Secrets From Julia Roberts is the book she wrote after she got drunk drinking from that "wine bottle glass" hehe :D
I get a wee bit of unripened banana in Caol Ila 12, so it wasn't too surprising for me--just a bit sweeter.
INAO became my preferred whisky glass by default, though it turns out a few others use it as well. I think it noses/sips as well as the Glencairn and I prefer having a real stem. Also cheaper and more versatile.
Do you mean Laphroaig? It's pronounced "lafroyg". You could get him a set of Glencairn whisky snifter glasses, I'll edit back with a link to amazon
Edit: something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003TMCNI8/ref=pd_aw_sim_79_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41YZou-ZgnL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100%2C100_&refRID=1GXGFJTZHT53SPC02BG4
I'm so going to buy it for my alcoholic friends birthday!
1. I know I could just use reparo, but I'd rather my wine glasses not break in the first place. Plus, there's no putting wine back in a broken glass, and we can't have that! If I drop it, I'll just use wingardium leviosa, and the wine will be saved!
2. Whenever I put my dog on the back of my broomstick, he's always trying to chew off the handle. Maybe this item will fool him.
3. I'm not sure I can afford my own, but I have three friends who might let me borrow theirs. I might have to dust them off a bit.
4. This would help me understand the magic of the mind, and the mind magic behind the magic!
5. I have a feeling my school trunk would just be full of dirty clothes.
6. Cape! I'd really like to find a cape like this guy has. Practical AND fashionable. I think he really epitomizes those two qualities.
For sure! I just bought them off amazon, they’re the 12 oz Corcksicle stemless glasses:

My favorite:

Looks beautiful.
Personally, I love the Glencarin glasses. Though, I recently bought some stemless glasses for the GF/I for reds. Have some old school tumblers from the rents, but not a huge fan.
I would just get these: http://www.amazon.com/Ravenscroft-Crystal-Essentials-International-Tasting/dp/B00CISXFCC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463346016&sr=8-1&keywords=iso+tasting+glasses
Much better than mason jars for tasting.
http://www.amazon.com/DCI-Glass-Holds-Whole-Bottle/dp/B000VKOK6O
hehehe, yw.
The bottleneck is too narrow to efficiently transfer wine into that "wine glass". Try this instead.
looks like you can get 2 for $18 rather than 1 @ ~$7 each.
Invest in a Glencairn glass, it really makes a difference.
Also, this a is a sub for reviews and discussion. Let us know what you like about it and what flavors you get.
I looks like my glasses. Schott-Zweisel Pure burgundy glass.
Looks like these. Bought a set for myself this year. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZFCQL4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/Original-RedNek-Wine-Glass-16/dp/B004HZR94O
Not quite the same, but wasn't that the beginning of the whole mason jar fad?
Gotta make sure they're classy, at least.
I have a solution. Wine glass
Ugh. If it's just ONE stitch, you might be able to ladder it back up with judicious use of a crochet hook? After a washing and wear or two the tighter stitches should even out. Unless there are increase/decrease complications, in which case I just recommend you grab a glass of wine (I recommend this one personally) and tie off the dropped stitch.
Uh, /u/-Hermione_Danger- you need these. Just don't put them in the dishwasher (even on the top rack) or you will warp them.
Hi.
I really want These because I currently cannot drink wine at the cottage without spilling it.
I was shopping for coffee mugs on Amazon yesterday and came across a fuckload of "coffee humor": example. It really makes me angry for something, can't quite put my finger on it.
Similar to "coffee humor" is "wine humor", which is basically coffee humor but trashier: example.
you need this
Close, I got this one.

Maybe it was two of these glasses?
That's why I bought one of these.
It's called Govino and it's plastic, not rubber. It's shatterproof and reusable.
why not both?

Filled as shown, add in one ice cube.

Like this? I've seen them in several stores now. Although I do live in the south so I shouldn't be surprised.
Not positive they are the exact same but Amazon.com has these
I got this for my girlfriend last year but, as far as I'm aware, she still hasn't used it yet. Probably because she's not a pisshead like I am.
Oh I see the photo now, I might have missed it the first time!
I will say, get yourself some Glencairns or Copita glasses. Totally worth it for tasting and nosing.
No, one of these: http://www.amazon.com/DCI-Glass-Holds-Whole-Bottle/dp/B000VKOK6O
I would cry for that cheap of wine and hopefully become the Town Drunk. :P
So I can be a proper small town drinker.

$6 for a novelty plastic cocktail cup? Fuck that.
I'd rather keep it classy.
Town Drunk
These shatterproof wine glasses I'll be investing in soon since I've broken almost all my wineglasses! Down to 3 different ones left!
I think my Reddit is messed up. I don't get orange envelope notifications when people comment on my posts... But anyway, yeah, opening wine can be a bitch. Especially when you've had a long hard day and all you want is to relax with a nice glass of wine and your shit won't open!
