I picked up one of these for around 325. It's got an external mic, but i can promise hat you'll want one and to have it up in the a pillar. If you don't, you'll have a hard time talking on the phone. Most all cars have a mic located on the roof near the driver. Running the wire shouldn't be too hard. Def worth the effort. Comes in the box

Any of the NEX units from pioneer are great too. I ran one for like 3 years. I don't any reason to have built in nav when you can use car play or android auto.

This deck let's you connect two BT sources at once, two USB, plays most all formats, has a super fast response time in the gui, sounds great with tons of customization for audio, as well as being 3way active capable (my main reason other than AA) . Turning the volume up pretty loud doesn't seem to cause distortion with stock amp either. All around no complaints.

If you can find an NEX, I'd say similar things about those units. Fast, easy to use and worth the money. Some of the NEX units even have hdmi inputs and multiple camera inputs, though probably overkill for most.

Hey man, I've had both single-DIN (2" tall) and double-DIN (4" tall) stereos in my E. I really like the 4" to fill the factory space. 4" stereos run a little bit more, but look a lot better in my opinion.

Check out the DPX501BT from Kenwood. It offers smartphone integration for both Android and iPhone, plus has Bluetooth streaming and hands-free calling. It's a really good value!

For under a hundred, the Kenwood KDC-BT365U is amazing! This is a single-DIN, so a storage pocket would fill the extra space underneath.

I have tried all kinds of cables, transmitters and cassette adapters and they're all an annoying waste of time (IMHO looking back).

But I finally just broke down and had a car stereo put in, a JVC KDX50BT. It is not perfect, but it doesn't need to be. I got it locally on special for $99 + $20 installation.

It has two wonderful features. A real volume knob, and bluetooth.

I drove away after it was installed and it's been wonderful. I get in the car and it plays whatever is on my phone.

The phone controls everything.

Not all bluetooth receivers are the same. This receiver specifically does A2DP. That means you can stream music from your phone.

Actually in my case it will do audio in or out from iphone. Audio from games, youtube, camera videos, whatever will come out the car stereo. It will also use the car for input, so for instance iPhone 4S siri, voice dictation and the voice recorder app will use the car's microphone.

So once I notice the siri thing, I started making phone calls from my car, and that's been a pleasant surprise. I press and hold the phone button on the radio, then I hear the siri bell and I tell siri who to call. You can even have siri send a text message.

Oh, and once I got it about bluetooth, I put a JVC KDX80BT (description is wrong) in my other car. It has a better UI, but it's basically the same thing in the end.

Oh if you're into USB or aux-in these devices support them too.

ok, I went on Amazon and found the 1400NEX you mentioned and found a backup camera that looks like it will work fairly well. There were a couple of other items recommended - one to control the radio from the steering wheel and the other I'm still not clear on - looks like it might be used to be able to play videos without the car being in park. If that's the case, I'm not interested in that as I don't want distractions for my 16yo daughter nor do I think she'd honestly want it. If that cable does something else that actually makes it useful, please let me know.

All I needed was the Honda wiring harness, I didn't technically need a dash kit but there was a small gap and the dash kit was like ~$10 so I got it anyways. Made the factory speakers sound way better too.

Doesn't do anything fancy like carplay / android auto, but I can answer phone calls (it comes with a wired mic, I attached mine to the top of my steering column), and can change songs via the buttons on the head unit, I don't really have to touch my phone while driving.

I just went through replacing with a modern radio this weekend. Had great success with a really shallow radio, no CD player. Fit nicely. I also did all the wiring so if you wanna install without and amp I can explain how I did it. Radio was maybe 80$ plus some small speakers.

It's quite easy to install on your own, I've personally had fantastic success with the Sony GS610BT head unit. I've bought 3 of them. Bluetooth, Pandora, USB, NFC, SiriusXM compatible, audio in, hands free mic. Best combination of features for what I need.

it always feels so shoddily tied together - mounts that fall off in the heat - power cords running around to plug in or trip over, etc.

I love consolidation. granted it means stuff ages out faster - but man - give me an android audio head unit and I'm a pretty happy camper - nav/backup cam/audio/android apps all on ONE screen and it's pretty up to date because its all streamed from my phone. no cords or extra stuff - looks factory in the stock dash.

But you are wanting to hack / mod your stock radio to add aux in? Adding a new after market radio is a no brainier.

They will have everything you need at walmart or best buy. If you buy from crutchfield they will include everything you need.

I got the Metra dash kit from Best Buy, you can get it cheaper on Amazon or eBay. And I got a Maestro adapter for the steering wheel hand controls. The stereo I have now has wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android, it’s this Pioneer.

Those RetroSound Radios arn´t an good solution either. Way to expensive for their limited features.
My solution is an Hidden APP controlled(via Bluetooth) Headunit, placed in the glove compartment, Under a seat,
or in a little box in the trunk. right behind the rear seat. and just place the phone with an holder on the dash/windshield.
Those headunits are quite cheap ~80-120$,Example I use or evenless for no name china style ones.
I really like the handsfree phone and voice controll features.

what phone? if its an iphone i would look for a carplay reciever. the best balance of sound and features is going to be something from Kenwood. i would look at this one there is a newer model but much more expensive. its got 2 USB connections, so one for carplay and another for charging or whatever else. comes with a mic for bluetooth calls as well. its got hookups for a backup cam and sound quality is great. no CD/DVD drive cuts down on complexity and weight as well.

That's a good recommendation, but I'd go with this one. This is the exact receiver I'm running. I didn't care about HD radio since I use Spotify on my phone. Overall I'm very happy, it has 3 sets of RCA outs too in case you want to start adding in amplifiers later. The one Shelbert90 linked must be the previous model because I can't find it on Crutchfield or Amazon to compare it against the FH-X731BT I linked.

Depending on what VW radio is in there now, I would look at the RCD330G. It's a factory VW part that's plug and play on most VWs of that vintage. I replaced the RCD510 in my 2012 Passat with one and it's been awesome. Planning on replacing the RNS315 in my wife's '12 Tiguan with one as well. Make sure it's model number is 6RD 035 187B as that's the one with CarPlay. Supports Android Auto as well.

You will need a maestro unit to check tire pressure if your car supports it.

Edit: based on the comments I read you have a 2000 Honda Civic, so no matter what you won’t have tire pressure monitor or many other features. It was not something offered that year.

The radio will still do CarPlay and accept backup camera and a maestro unit will get you stearingwheel controls otherwise your going to need aftermarket stuff to do the rest.

If you want to use OEM stuff, you'll have to buy another radio because they're self contained (part of the radio) on these, like this. You'll also need the antenna and the SD card. The antenna is $300+ also.

Like the other dude said, a smart phone is a better way to go. Look on /r/nocontract and you can find pretty cheap plans for an unlocked phone. I pay less than $20 per month with Mintsim. Google maps is always up to date and can be downloaded before you leave wifi. You don't need data for GPS locating when you're oot and aboot.

In conjunction with a cheap data plan, you could also get a double din aftermarket that supports Android Auto, which uses Google Maps. Or a Pioneer with AppRadio works, but it's a bit of a PITA vs Android Auto. It doesn't allow just any apps, only the handful they deem compatible. This is the one I use. It doesn't use Google Maps, but instead a slightly inferior Waze. Always updated. Android Auto and AppRadio it requires you to plug your phone into the head unit with a USB cable, and you can't connect a USB jump drive for the rest of your music when you're doing that. You can also use these offline. It's a chore sometimes though, tbh.

Here's a little vidya about the AppRadio dohickey, that one's pretty similar to the one I have but faster.

edit: I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket indash nav unit. They're $450+ (vs $250-$300 for a non nav). In my experience, the routing is incredibly inferior to Google Maps or Waze, traffic isn't as accurate. They also don't update easily or for free like Google Maps/Waze. We had a Pioneer Nav unit (I don't recall the model #) a couple years ago, and that thing was awful. One time it took me down the Kilpatrick turnpike in OKC when everything I needed was north of the turnpike - came in on I35, my dest was 7 miles west of I35 and 5 miles north of the turnpike. It wasn't faster and it cost more in tolls. Another time it had me exit 4 or 5 exits early and then snaked me through town to get to my destination. I had a trailer that time and there was a ton of construction on those streets, so that was neat. Another time it had me exit well after my destination (the exit was about a mile past my dest, even though there was an exit just 1/4 mile or so before it).

My 2007 Jetta originally had the 6 CD stereo (factory), but I wanted Bluetooth integration and USB/AUX for passengers. I chose a double din Kenwood stereo that specifically would fit in my dash and look more like it belonged there.

That's the one I have and it works great. I use PowerAmp on my Android phone and set it to pause when it loses BT connection and resume when it connects to the car automagically. I love it.

Now this headunit is the best you can get for under $100. It does have usb but it isn't directly on the front though. If you want it on the front then we will have to downgrade the speakers to afford a headunit that does have it on the front. The Polk DB series is a great entry level speaker series. I also looked up speaker size of your car and my research turned up that no where in the car do you have 6x9.. so how does that work?

I had considered that, I just don't like the aesthetic of many of the newer ones for what I am picturing. Digital displays, flashing lights... I was hoping for something analog.

That said, there are a few Chinese brands of "vintage car stereo" that may work nicely.

For example, this one isn't too flashy and if I don't connect the illumination circuit would look fairly analog.

Yeah. I'm especially eyeing this stereo because I have an old beat up single din Pioneer aftermarket stereo I used to have aux access and looking at the back of the double din one, it looks like all the wires I have right now will work on this one so it should be an easy plug-and-play minus the rear camera feed which I don't care about

Works pretty well even though it's an older model since CarPlay mirrors your phone onto the screen, so not much processing on the multimedia system itself. Got it hooked up at a place in Sanad called Itronix (www.itronixbh.com) for about 30BD including a rear view camera.

I just put one of these (using this and this) in my '95 and love it so far.

What do you define as pretty cheap? Anything around $20 will be garbage. You need to spend at least $50 for anything half decent.

Congrats! All you need is a wiring harness for this one. I have it in my 05 FXT. You can change the colors to make it match your interiors lights. It's Pioneer, 89 bucks, and has bluetooth, that is all I need.

I was in a similar situation a while back and was doing research on stereos. Pioneer has the AppRadios..but I haven't heard great things about them. Went to go try them out at Best Buy and wasn't thrilled with it considering the price.

Went with a Sony single-din radio with SiriusXM, bluetooth, and even has an app that allows you to use your phone as the remote.

Basically, the ones I've seen that have a huige screen and allow you to interface your phone apps through the screen aren't "there" yet

You can buy an adapter that will hook up to your current car radio, they are a little tricky to install. You would still have to go through the same trouble as installing a new radio... I would just reccomend buying a new aftermarket radio, some headunuts also have spotify capabilities so you can see your song on the screen and skip, switch playlists ect... i use mine through bluetooth and love it. Only paid around 120 for it off amazon.

If you want sound quality and don't want video screen I'd recommend you the Alpine CDE-W265BT or the Pioneer FH-X731BT.

I’m currently using a [Pioneer double din] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KKHUBMY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FkqLAbA1NF1P6) head unit. I don’t use CDs and such so I opted for a full digital media receiver to fit my needs.

All major and most lesser brands offer Bluetooth so it’s not like Pioneer is exclusive. In fact there are a lot that are more feature rich than what I have now. My current head unit was actually a down grade from my previous. Idk if other brands are different but after my experience with Pioneer I wouldn’t put a lot of decision on any apps that are supposed to work with the head unit.

Several manufacturers have a model or two like this now, no CD or Tape.

I have already tried that, thank you for the suggestion though. It seems to still do the same thing. When I turn that option on it un-links the devices volume with the Pixel's and gives me two different volumes. I should probably elaborate that I am using a aux to bluetooth adapter.

Actually I replaced the stereo in my 04 Mazad3 a few years ago (before AA was a thing) with a Pioneer head unit that works fine but I'm not thrilled with. I was thinking of upgrading again to get an AA head unit but ended up buying a new car that already had AA from the factory.

I still have the Mazda but it's a spare/beater car at this point so not worth spending the money for an AA head unit. I was going to select this Pioneer unit because it's well rated and only $320.

There's a JVC Unit that's even cheaper ($271) but not a lot of reviews on it.

As somone who did speakers the hard way on my old '96 (cutting the factory harness) and the easy way on my GF's 95 Legacy, her 95 Civic hatch, and my 2011 CRZ, do this:

Buy a radio. Doesn't matter what. JA is a genius but don't fuck with that 20 year old electronics. Get Bluetooth dude. For me, I'd recommend something mechless like this. Your input choices are AM/FM, 3.5mm aux in, USB and Bluetooth. No CDs or tapes or 8 tracks.

From there, get some shit tier Xplod or whatever speakers. Miatas have such poor acoustic properties it doesn't make sense to build up a system when the top is going to be down or the doors are going to be hollow.

Whatever you do, pay attention to this (this is what makes installs easy vs hard) get the appropriate dash kit and harness for the Miata. You'll wire the radio to the harness, then just plug the harness into the factory radio plug. This is completely nondestructive, reversible, and the only way you should consider doing an install.

I replaced the default stereo in my 2018 XLE with this stereo on Amazon because it has Wireless Apple CarPlay.

My car has Bluetooth, I bought Bluetooth earbuds two years ago and never looked back to the audio jack. Wearing corded earbuds feels like being on a leash. Using the aux and the phone is a big spaghetti mess of cables on the shifter.

How much should I spend on a head unit? Is this one decent?

I bought this one. I don't have any issues with it and it's also really small. My car is too loud to really hear the speakers though.

I installed this in my 01 Corolla a couple weeks ago. It fits in the stock mounting bracket and has AUX, BT and USB. All you will need to install it is this wiring harness, a set of crimp caps and a wire stripper/crimp tool.

The hardest part is wiring the new head unit to the wiring harness. The actual installation should take 10 minutes.

You're not going to find a double-din in your budget, unless it was already stolen from another vehicle.

If you're concerned about theft, you can cover over the manufacturer name or other identifying text with some black electrical tape to further camouflage it.

My wife's new car has CarPlay/AndroidAuto and I got jealous of having Google Maps in her car. Upgraded my stereo to a Pioneer AVH-4400NEX and realized it has an HDMI port on the back. Threw a Pi3B+ in the glovebox with RetroPi on it and now I have something to play around with when waiting for people!

oh boy, i guess you have a ton of options here. Did you want shallow mount subs under the seats or are you going to sacrifice room for a standard sub n box? Do you want to replace the stock speakers and/or add a 4 channel amp?
What kind of music does she listen to (does she wanna bomb the blocks or does she just need some extra kick)?
