I wrote this out yesterday morning, but didn't get a chance to post it, so some ideas might sound repetitive, so I apologize for that:

There are so many hobbies that don't involve spending thousands of dollars and if you find something you're passionate about, even if your boyfriend isn't, I'm sure he'd love hearing you talk about it.

I love to read. There are tons of free books online (especially on Amazon) as well as super cheap books you can buy just about anywhere. I like researching new things online (everything from medical info to history and biographies) or learning the backstory/ideas behind the shows and movies I watch on tv. I love video games and there are plenty that are free to play or very affordable to buy on so many different platforms. Being fit and working out is free. YouTube has countless channels dedicated to every different style of fitness you can think of. I'm subscribed to so many different channels, it's like having my own personal trainer tailored to my exact interests. It's also a great place to watch tutorials on doing pretty much anything you can imagine.... from makeup to cooking to gardening to singing to programming to woodworking and everything in between. The amount of things you can learn or watch on Youtube is pretty much endless. It might even inspire you to start Vlogging or making your own videos. You could take up playing an instrument or learning a new language with free apps like Duolingo. Since you like wine and Netflix, I've heard of a lot of places where you can have a girl's night out drinking wine and painting together. It would be an interesting change of pace! I'm an avid gardener and you can can garden indoors and out for a pretty small investment just starting with a few seeds.

There are tons of kits that you can buy without spending too much money to see what you're into. I'll list some of my favorites below. Some of the Klutz kits might seem juvenile, but they really aren't. They are all-inclusive, well packaged and have awesome instructions and tips: Gardening, Sewing, Clay, Watercolor, Coloring and Knitting.

Honestly the possibilities are endless, you just have to open your mind up to what a hobby can be. I'm pretty passionate about most of the things I mentioned, plus things like interior design, fashion, Art, electronics, cars, tattoos and tons of things that would cost a lot of money to actually purchase and engage in, but I learn about them, make Pinterest boards about them and discuss and share my interest with friends and family. Actually Pinterest is a great way to discover new hobbies and interests and Etsy is pretty inspiring since most things are homemade or vintage.

Here's an idea: get crafty! With arts and crafts, that is, where you're only limited by your imagination (and money and time too I suppose...)

Buy a generic back pack and decorate it with pins and patches and iron-ons and dangly doo-hickies all that you can make (or order online) yourself! Seriously, it doesn't take much to get one of those button-makers. It'll come in handy later when your little filly gets a bit older and runs for student council, amiright?

You can buy iron-on stuff at almost any large retailer or hobby/crafts store. Try something compatible with your home printer and see how that works.

Patches are a little bit more complicated but still within reach. You can design your own and have them created by companies over the internet. Most of them offer iron-on backing for a little extra, and it doesn't take much to add a little extra stitching for added security. Most of the time all you need is a vector image and those are easy enough to find. Typically you're limited to a 3" x 3" square. Another catch too is you'll probably have to order a half dozen or so, which is okay too if your daughter has friends to share with.

If you're feeling adventurous, try stencil-making! Buy those little blind-bag toys and attach key ring loops on them. Search the internet for toys and trinkets to hang off of the bag. These are all fun creative learning experiences that you can share together. This is also her back pack and it can be a canvass for self-expression. I haven't met a girl yet that didn't want to express herself. Buy her a good quality pack and it'll last a lot longer than any average plastic Wal-Mart bag. It might not be an official product, but when has that been an issue for this community? If you need help, well, that's what we're here for. She can invest a little bit of herself into making it and maybe she'll care about it all that much more (or maybe I'm just being sickeningly optimistic. It's just a back pack after all...)

If I've learned anything from the DIY Channel, it's that all you need is a hot glue gun and a heaping helping of ambition! Good times. Now get out there and make an awesome back pack and report back with pictures!

When i did a trip with my kid at 18mths old (he is the same will not sleep unless in his bed usually) I had multiple items at the ready and would swap once i saw him loosing interest. Things other than the ipad that he loved, books ( he loves when you read to him), water wow books from Melissa and Doug, I got a monthly pill organizer and filled each little spot with a treat like puffs, cherrios, fruit snacks etc and he would work on opening and closing the little doors to find what was inside ( he was more excited to open and close than actually eat it). I also had his fav stuffed animal, a little bear he could work on buckles etc.
I travelled early in the morning because he is well behaved in the morning. He slept like crap the night before we returned and only the ipad would work ( i got him little headphones we practiced using so as not to annoy others) he watched the ipad for about 30 mins and i noticed he was drifting and i took him out his seat and held him as he slept all the way back ( i actually had him just sit in the airline seat and sent his carseat as baggage, i know having them in the carseat is safer so please don't judge it was what worked best for him)

Kinetic sand

Backstory... I'm a bit of a geek. Seriously. I've also got Gallium And ferrofluid.

BEST april fools prank. I have one I just did, so not really april fools but still wonderful. My coworkers helped me saran wrap one of my employee's car. It was fantastic, yes I have photographic evidence if anyone is interested. Truly. Another is taping an airhorn to the underside of my GM's chair.

Fin or embarrassing fact or story... um... wow. Okay, this is fun and embarrassing. OK, here goes....

I like Zumba... Like REALLY like zumba... I would do it every day if I had time. Lots of panting and sweating with my wii controller strapped to my hip. So fun.

Yay! I love figuring out gifts for people.

For Adela:

u/ooomphlaa · 3 pointsr/electronic_cigarette

If you aren't yet 18 I can't condone getting into vaping regardless of if you are using 0 nic or not. At the core of it you are inhaling substances that still has not been fully researched and the long term impact of using is not fully understood. I won't go into how you go from being a child to an adult overnight when you turn 18 but 18 is what we all are stuck with as being the age in which you can use these types of products.

That all being said if you suffer from severe anxiety and clinical level (or any for that matter) depression you need to seek professional help. I say this with all seriousness. These are diseases and need treatment. Whether that means cognitive or talk therapy or medication or herbal/alternative treatment. Please take it from someone who knows. You've taken an important first step in recognizing you have a problem so please take then next important step and ask for help.

I love vaping. It helped me quit cigarettes after my first vape. And currently I don't see myself stopping any time soon. However, would I vape if I had never smoked? Probably not, in fact most likely not.

All seriousness aside check out this stuff Kinetic Sand it is amazing and hours of fun to play with.

Things can get better, but unless you ask for help and take that step they will not get better on their own.

Please take care of yourself. There is only one of you and we'd hate to lose you.

Now, if you turn 18 and decide to try out vaping please feel free to come back here and we'll all be happy to help you to vaping nirvana.

Cheers.

THIS IS SO COOL.

  • Macaroni Grill
  • Olive Garden (it's not my favorite but we love to go with friends)
  • P.F. Changs

I'd love to take my mom/parents to dinner. Mom's been in the hospital for two weeks and they've both been stressed out of their minds. It'd be nice to give them a nice meal, even if I had to get takeout and bring it to the hospital :)

    Dinners on you!

    PS: This sand is fascinating.
u/Ididntknowiwas · 1 pointr/RandomActsOfPolish

picked these out for landon this and this found this for noah dis found this cool ass toy site called fat brain toys there over priced but finding them else were cheaper lots of things landon will love he likes to build thing loves things like magnets what have you oh yes! :D

u/excessively_diverted · 3 pointsr/autism

(Posted this on your r/christmas post, but sometimes they remove things with links, so I'm posting here too!)

I really like the Grimm's toys. They are kind of expensive, but super cool for kids to stack and build, organize by size/shape/color, and they are made out of wood which is a nice different texture than all the plastic toys kids have. My 4 year old son loves playing with all his Grimm's stuff. We have the large rainbow, some of the little peg people, the trees, fairy houses, and some blocks. I would also suggest kinetic sand, play silks and costumes, a rocker board, and water beads. All the above are great sensory toys and are big hits with kids with or without autism!

u/PairOfMonocles2 · 1 pointr/gifs

Nope, not for decent stuff. We've bought three times because we have a small sand table on our porch (so it lives outside uncovered) but after a couple months our three year old has lost half of it through the floor. Twice it's been perfect like this and doesn't change, one brand was crap but it was crap from day one. Oddly, he liked it at least as much, it just wouldn't hold shapes well. Anyway, all three were different brands from Amazon so if there's differences it seems to be more who made it than changes over time.

Btw, I'm pretty sure this is the one we bought last time and it's been great:

There were two Klutz books back in the day for polymer clay, and each came with 8 half-bars of Sculpey III (a low-quality polymer clay); they wouldn't have the clay still included though if purchased at amazon, eBay, etc.
https://www.amazon.com/Incredible-Clay-Book-Klutz-Press/dp/1878257730
https://www.amazon.com/Create-Anything-Clay-Sherri-Haab/dp/1570543275
Those were very simple books oriented toward kids, and almost entirely small sculpted items in the second book (the first book had more techniques), but I see there's at least one newer Klutz polymer clay book (not by the same author/s though) on making sculpted "charms":
https://www.amazon.com/Klutz-Make-Clay-Charms-Craft/dp/0545498562

There are better books for those things though, even for simple sculpts (including "charms") like these for example:
https://www.amazon.com/Clay-Play-JEWELRY-Terry-Taylor/dp/0486799441
https://www.amazon.com/Polymer-Clay-Cookbook-Tiny-Jewelry/dp/0823024849

But there's also loads of FREE info, tutorials, etc, online at YouTube and at places like my website for making things like that, and many other things with polymer clay.

My sister is 7 and pretty into learning so I got her things to try and keep that spirit alive. I bought her this telescope and a childrens book about celestial bodies. I also bought this for a girl about Isla's age for Christmas. I got to play with it in the store and it feels pretty awesome and never dries up.

Edit: Adela might be interested in the other things I got for my sister which were a Crayola crayon/marker maker, Bill Nye science books and this DohVinci thing

I love these lights so much. They change color at different speeds/ patterns depending what you select and they're super cheap.

Also I have a rain stick that I made which is super fun to use.

Also kinetic sand

My daughter is 6! She likes Legos and Lego video games. Does your daughter have any consoles? You said she is getting in to video games. I can recommend Lego Harry Potter and the Lego The Movie video game. Spring is coming. Does she like birds? She might like a set of binoculars and this bird book. My daughter has that book and loves trying to find all of the birds listed in our area. Peeler beads are something your two girls can do together. They might also like a spin art machine.

u/Emmylu91 · 2 pointsr/Gifts

If you want to get something she'll use then i'd try to go with whatever type of toy she plays with the most often. Most kids have a lot of stuffed animals but don't often actually play with them - same goes for dolls a lot of the time.

I have two 10 year old nieces and one spends most of her time playing with monster high dolls so for her i'd try to get a doll or set that she doesn't already have.

The other one spends a lot of time playing with playmobil and lego friends doll sets so in her case i'd get her a new playmobil or lego set.

A lot of girls this age are into craft kits. If you think she'd like that maybe go with something like this or this.

u/Lapinet12 · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

Maybe it's outdated where you live and for a 14 yo, but I bough a badge maker to my sister a couple years ago. And she loved it ! You can put whatever message or picture you want, offer them to your friends, etc.

You could offer her a mini tech lab (to do make up, or just cool stuffs).

u/AtomicPenny · 1 pointr/Horses

You used to be able to buy an unpainted knockoff breyer for like $20. Maybe the kit is still a thing? I did like a dozen of them back in the day. The paint that comes with them leaves a little something to be desired if you want it to look more professional, but if you use your own paint the quality of the model is actually really nice. I did all my guys and a bunch just for fun.

Edit: I just googled and the kit still exists and is actually from Breyer. They're all over Amazon. They have way more breeds/poses these days!

If her dexterity is still good, maybe something like hand braided dog toys made from old t-shirts, which could be donated to a local shelter or rescue group:

http://stories.barkpost.com/how-to-make-a-t-shirt-dog-toy/

No-sew (hand tied fleece blankets) could be gifted to family members. Or make crib blanket sized ones and donate them to a local childrens shelter, fire department, or police station for children in crisis:

http://thefrugalgirls.com/2011/12/no-sew-fleece-blanket.html

(Be sure to watch your local craft or fabric store for sales and coupons. Jo Ann fabrics, for example, frequently had 50% off coupons that are good on any one cut of fabric. Also, after the holidays, there should be some excellent sales on polar fleece, as many fabric stores will be clearing it out to make room for spring fabrics.)

Super Spirograph : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KJLUTQU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7x8RDbNRC3FC3

u/Allisonmac · 4 pointsr/aspergers

I don't like onesies; I prefer the feeling of a waistband.

I'll second the Tangle and add Downbeats earplugs. Kinetic sand is cool. I can't find the one I have but sensory chews like this or this are great.

Gift Two and a little something for me

Gift Two I never got to play with Shrinky Dinks as a kid, I want to see what all the fun is about. Also I am About to but the Paper Crane kit as a treat for myself.

u/MattieShoes · 1 pointr/oddlysatisfying

The resonance makes the pattern start and end with them in the same point every 8 earth years/13 venus years, after which it repeats. 8 years from today, Earth and Venus will be in the same spots relative to the sun as they are right now. If they weren't resonant, that wouldn't happen.

But they aren't exactly resonant, so if the simulation continued for another 8 year cycle, the next pattern would look the same but be a teensy bit offset from the previous one. If they were perfectly resonant, then the pattern would draw right on top of itself for the next cycle.

If that's not enough, I dunno man, buy a spirograph.

u/El_Braineater · 3 pointsr/Parenting

This one is a simple and good one i found after testing out a few kits, just buy extra coloring pens because it only comes with 2 of them. Enjoy bro

u/LimitlessAdventures · 6 pointsr/DnD

For those who might not know:

Shrinkydinks was a popular children's toy in the 1970s and early 80s. Plastic sheets can be drawn on with colored pencils, pens, markers, cut out and baked in an oven. They shrink by about 50% and thicken, forming a heavy plastic. By drawing on them beforehand, the coloring gets more dense and vibrant, and the "blank" areas of the plastic become white. It's very durable once it shrinks.

Color on a Shrinky Dink Sheet, using bold lines (I like Sharpie), and colored pencil, and cut it out.

Make sure you draw it big enough, they'll shrink to 1/3 of their size in area after you bake them, and will thicken up considerably.

We just drove from SF to LA with our almost 2 year old, and it was way less awful than I was prepared for. We got several of these (which were the BIGGEST hit) : https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Water-Activity-3-Pack/dp/B00CPHX9JK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1506016783&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=water+wow+melissa+and+doug&psc=1

We also had several of the Melissa and Doug reusable sticker books and downloaded some sesame street on the tablet to use in a pinch. And lots of snacks.

Hope it's smooth travel for you!

I don't think we had any duds this year, but I was surprised by how much of a hit the "spiral paint kit" was. They would do it all day long.

You can use a spirograph such as this one to create this shape and many others with one continuous line.

It occurs to me that one might try using shrinky dink type material for these. It might allow for a little more detail.

No, that's a more basic set. This one looks more like the one in the picture.

Edit: Also, this set is more intricate, and has smaller parts that are easier to lose, and are a choking hazard. It has track pieces for the outer ring that can snap together to make many shapes, but that means this one might be more delicate.

This is the adult toy of a version that I used to have as a kid.
