Congrats on getting your new kitty. I really wish I had this subreddit when I adopted my girls almost six years ago. As a dog person, I've had a lot to learn. You seem like you're off to a good start.

  1. Most cats sleep for well over half the day. Usually in the form of short naps. Think about how human babies take multiple naps during the day and don't usually sleep through the night. I've never seen anyone suggest making them stay awake all day long so they will sleep all night. That just seems like a losing battle. They may be asleep when you go to bed, but they will most likely wake up for the 3am zoomies. It's this weird thing they do in the middle of the night where they chase ghosts from one end of the house to the other. If you're awake, you'll see her quickly glancing around as if she's surrounded, then sprinting away at top speed. It's funny when you're awake. When you're asleep, not so much. I hope your girl likes the hammock. Mine won't walk/lay on unstable surfaces. They aren't crazy about sitting on my lap as it is rather jiggly. A window perch of some sort is necessary. They like to sleep in the sun and are super nosy about what those nefarious neighborhood birds are getting up to.
  2. I also alternate wet and dry food. It's really better to avoid dry food altogether though. Raw diet is best, wet food diet is good, dry food diet is not very good at all. When I tried adding water to their dry food, they wanted nothing to do with it, and it got nasty pretty fast. Just make sure she has a source of fresh water available at all times. I usually refresh their water after I brush my teeth (their bowls are in the bathroom). Water gets stale quickly, as well as collecting dust and hair. If she dips her feet in the water, it may also have litter in it (yuck!). Watch her for whisker fatigue with her food and water bowls. Some cats are very sensitive to their whiskers touching the side of the bowls. I eventually ended up putting their food on plates or in shallow bowls and their water in wide rectangular bowls. If she's not finishing the food, you could try reducing the amount by a little each day until you reach the right amount for her. Most vets will tell you that feeding guidelines are useful, but not the bible. If kitty is getting fat, feed her a little less. If she is getting thin, feed her a little more. You kind of bounce around a bit at first until you find the right amount for your cat. They all have different needs based on metabolism, activity level, and other factors.
  3. Toothbrushing can be difficult. I've had more success with a round toothbrush. I just let them bite on it. They tolerate it more than a one sided brush. If she doesn't like it at first, get her used to the idea of you grooming her. Just touch her mouth and ears a little at a time and reinforce her good behavior with positive speech, pets, and treats. They need to know you're torturing them a little for their benefit, because you love them. You're not just being mean. Brushing preferences, like all things, are different for each cat. Try different types of brushes with different brushing techniques until you figure out what she likes. Mine hate metal brushes with a passion and adore boars hair brushes. One girl likes her brushies fast and furious, while the other prefers slow and steady. If you need to use wipes, just remember that she has to lick all of those chemicals and fragrances off of her hair later. I use unscented baby wipes for my girl that refuses to clean her bottom after pottying. If they get something in their hair, I use warm, damp washcloths.
  4. For toys, just keep trying different things until you figure out what she likes. Before you spend hundreds of dollars buying all the fancy cat toys, try out the stuff you already have around the house. Cats usually don't like the things you buy for them anyway. Some suggestions: ribbon (big enough that she won't swallow it), aluminum foil ball, ping pong ball, socks, scrunchies (my cat found my stash from the 90's), rags, cardboard boxes with holes cut in them (large enough that she won't get stuck), paper bags, running your hands or feet under a blanket, laser pointer. You can also toss treats from one side of the house to the other and make her run back and forth. Just don't engage in the kind of play where she is biting your hand. That develops bad habits. Her not wanting to play yet may be due to being in a newish environment. She'll probably play more as she becomes more comfortable and feels secure.
  5. Of course, she's not interested in the box. You set it up special just for her. You will learn that if you buy/make it for them, they don't want it. However, if you used the box for something else, she will probably claim it as her own. Just observe where she likes to sleep, is it out in the open, closed up like a cave, in a corner, in the middle of the room, under furniture, up high, down low, close to where ever you are. Use those observations to set up a bed(s) that is absolutely not for her. In the end, she's going to sleep when and where she wants, but it's nice if you can make spots for her that make her feel super comfy and secure.
  6. If she likes those fake bones, go for it. One of mine loved chewing on an Orka bone after she ate. Now she just uses it to let me know she is hungry and I haven't fed her in ages, and she is going to starve to death soon, as it is really loud and squeaky when she rubs her teeth on it. You will need to check them and dispose of them if they start coming apart so she doesn't swallow chunks of it. If you want to give her real bones, use raw bones (like she'd eat in the wild). Cooked bones will splinter and can wreak havoc on her innards.
  7. At one year's old, she's still a kid and will learn and grow. Some aspects of her personality will change as she gets older, some will stay the same. She'll adapt to you and your lifestyle as you adapt to hers.
  8. I think they pretty much only knead dough when they are super relaxed and happy. It's a behavior that they used when nursing. After only 2 days, she may not be relaxed enough yet. Just give her time. Not all cats knead though, so if she doesn't do it, you'll just have to be content watching internet videos of other cats kneading. (FYI: There are over 600 cat subreddits.)

I hope some of this helps. Sorry it's so long. My cats are both asleep and I'm just Redditing while waiting for Game of Thrones to come on.

Instead of a walk in the morning, could you run with him? Or ride a bike? That would help tire him out more. I got the Tuff Mutt hands-free leash and I LOVE it. It has made running SO much easier. I also got the Ruffwear front range harness because my dog pulls like a madman and I wanted something with enough padding in the chest. My two complaints about the hands-free leash are that 1) the material is kind of slick, so the loop that clips around your waist will loosen frequently and need to be readjusted, and 2) if your dog lunges after something or changes directions suddenly, it'll feel like someone punched you in the gut.

Like you, I also leave my dog with a variety of treats like a kong, a stuffed marrow bone, and a holee roller ball with long/wide treats in it. I also started giving him these calming treats. He really does not like the taste and spits them out unless I cover them in peanut butter. I have no idea if the treats have much of an impact (the reviews are very mixed) or if the running does more to tire him out, but I will definitely say that the running + calming treats + puzzle toy combo has been perfect for my dog. He's basically knocked out the entire 9.5 hours I'm gone.

oh man.

Look into Powdered Goat's milk, use that as a base, you're gonna want to up your calories and your nutrients a lot. 5 weeks he's got some teeth right?

Start a simple mixture. I have my three month old on a mix of that same Blue Wilderness, with Canned Pumpkin and Cottage cheese. I mixe about 2/3s a pint cottage cheese with a large can of pumpkin and one can of the blue wilderness. I feed him a cup, to a cup and a half twice a day. You can mix dry kibble in too, let it soften a little and give him a bulk of protien

Your dog needs to have food available -at. all. times.- Dry food mixed with a little warm water to soften it up, or mixed with some cottage cheese to up the calories and calcium. Three meals of wet food, but access to dry (I use taste of the wild puppy chow bison/venison flavor).

Lets talk supplements, I use Coconut Oil, Fish Oil, and Digestive pro and pre-biotics

I would start at least with the pro-pre biotics especially since you've had him off of a mom this early. He's going to need to get a healthy gut going.

Socialize him slowly. Small moments -SUPERVISED- with other dogs until he's about 3-4 months.

Teething: Kong makes some great toys that are great for teething. Ropes, get some good smallish beef bones or chew bones. Cow Hooves work but they smell like ass. Stay away from rawhide.

That puppy is going to grow at an blinding rate, let him have as much food as he wants. If he gets a bit fat, that's fine at this stage. You don't want him fat at 3 months because he could grow too big and it might affect his bones, but right now a lot of extra weight is going to give him the nutrients and resources to grow.

I'm sure I'm missing some stuff, but my mother has been a breeder for over 40 years. She started with Shepherds, went to Collies and now does Corgi's so if you ever want to ask some questions I'm here.

This kit has the kind of brush I use - it's very common style, and many are sold through different manufacturers:

https://smile.amazon.com/Petrodex-Natural-Dental-Toothpaste-Toothbrushes/dp/B0002AQBC4/ref=sr_1_32?keywords=dog+toothbrush&qid=1574264522&rnid=2941120011&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-32

Make sure you don't accidentally buy one made for a small dog, but this brush may work for any size.

I get the Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste - my dogs have both really liked the Poultry flavor:

https://smile.amazon.com/Petrodex-Enzymatic-Toothpaste-Buildup-Poultry/dp/B00025K0R6/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=petrodex+toothpaste&qid=1574264736&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-1

I have a couple of these finger brushes, and they seem to work well. I use them to give the teeth a finishing touch, rub along the gumline, and get behind some of the teeth where it's difficult to access with a brush.

https://smile.amazon.com/Petosan-Microfiber-Fingerbrush-Oral-Cleaner/dp/B01B6365SU/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=dog+finger+toothbrush&qid=1574264804&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-19

And I'd like to plug the amazon 'smile' program. If you use smile.amazon.com to buy things they will donate 5% of your purchase price to charity. You get to choose the charity - mine is the Grey Muzzle Organization. But you have to remember to go to smile.amazon.com when purchasing, not the regular amazon.com.

Always a diva.

Someone else in the thread suggested carrots, I’ve used that at times. Just make sure they are in bite-sized pieces and softened in water. Or just used canned carrots.

Canned pumpkin is a other good option. Just be sure it is pure 100% pumpkin with no other ingredient and not pumpkin pie filling or other pumpkin product, the labeling is less than clear. With pumpkin just be careful because it is high in sugar.

Technically both those are orange.

Blueberries can work well and are also not green.

You can try mixing the fruits and vegetables with salmon oil. It’s a supplement for skin and coat health, but some dogs really love it and it also had a strong smell.

I just see this being your hippo. .

Hmmm, since she's only 14 months it's tough to say how big of an issue this really is going to be. There are some dogs who are born anxious and are anxious for their whole lives no matter what, and in those cases I think medication is the best thing. That being said, that's not where I would start, and certainly given she's still a puppy I'm sure she will relax in many ways just with time.

You're already on the right track wanting to help her, and if you put the time and energy in I'm sure you can really make a difference for her and her life.

One thing I'm reading here a lot in everything you're listing is her high energy. I think you need to first try just exhausting her and seeing how that helps. A very high energy dog who doesn't get to go out and just run at least once a day can exhibit psychological stresses such as anxiety. If you have a place near you that does some sort of "puppy play time" you can take her there to start as it will be a supervised and controlled environment. Assuming she does well in that kind of an environment, I would start regularly taking her to a dog park when the weather warms up just a little (note: dogs can be in pretty cold temp and not have many issues, though obviously freezing temperatures can be dangerous). This will help expel her energy and learn proper socialization both around dogs and humans.

Additionally, keep training her on a daily basis as the mental exhaustion will also be really beneficial for her.

Your roommate is actually almost doing exactly the right thing. If she could drop the mocking and just ignore her, that's what you want. In fact, I would make a habit of ignoring her bad behaviors yourself, and helping others to. A dog will interpret any kind of attention as a positive reward, and so if she's barking incessantly and you try to calm her down or even say "no" or anything, that's what she's looking for and she'll learn "barking means I get what I want".

The walking thing she will DEFINITELY get used to, that's just a time thing. My first dog was raised from 2 months in the city so traffic and noises everywhere was second nature to her. The first time I walked her in a quiet, rural setting, she FREAKED OUT. Every little noise frightened her because the silence was so strange to her. She needed to adjust to the new environment, that's all.

If you want to start diving into the product world, while it didn't work for my dog a lot of people have had a ton of success with a ThunderShirt. You'll see how mixed the reviews are, so it's the kind of thing that simply works or it doesn't.

There are pills which are meant to help calm dogs and work often but not always. They can cause upset stomaches, some dogs won't eat them, but no major side effects as long as you use the proper dosage.

Other people try pheromone collars which are again hit or miss. I personally don't love this as a solution because "miss" can be very bad (stories of dogs vomiting or having seizures, etc.), but again plenty of people have success stories.

When your dog is around 3 she will start to chill out no matter what as dogs go through an emotional development stage then. That doesn't mean her anxiety will be gone. My first dog had insane anxiety as a puppy and we couldn't even leave her alone or she'd hurt herself. As an adult dog, she's very relaxed in the house and can stay home by herself for many hours if needed, but she still expresses signs of extreme anxiety when we have people over and sometimes when we're leaving. I've spent thousands trying to train her out of it with professionals and they all came to "some dogs just can't be trained out of this". I hope this isn't your dog because it's as hard as it is for them as it is for you, but if it is, prozac can really work and helps save a lot of dogs from those stresses.

Like I said, start with the exercise and at MOST maybe a ThunderShirt and see how things go. Sometimes all it takes is some time & love :)

Yikes, food allergies are super difficult:/ I'm so glad you were able to find a food that she tolerates well. Luckily the yeast infections are easy to manage. We use an anti-fungal otic wash in her ears to keep the yeast at bay. Gotta love floppy ears :P

You can order a DNA Test from amazon if you are serious curious. They aren't %100 accurate, and your vet can do a blood test (instead of saliva) that is far more accurate, over %99 if I remember correctly. It's an expensive way to settle an argument, but it's good to know exactly what your breed is to know what medical conditions they may be predisposed to.

Based on this photo, I think you have an AmStaff / APBT mix. Here's a link to a post I made a few months back that show the differences between American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and American Bullies. If you look closely at the 1st photo (APBT) and the 2nd (AmStaff) you'll see the difference in muscle mass. AmStaffs are very beefy dogs because they have a type of muscle that is layered differently than APBTs. In that post I go into a bit of detail about the differences in weight, size, and energy levels of each breed, but it's only in regard to purebreds. Mixes are just that, so they vary a lot in those considerations.

It's also possible that he's %100 AmStaff with "subpar" genes. Don't take that as a slight, because the genes that breeders isolate to make the "perfect" AmStaff, happen to be the ones that make them susceptible to Hip dysplasia, deafness, skin allergies, and other serious medical issues. For instance, I know my boy is %100 AmStaff because he comes from 2 papered dogs that have a genetic line that can be traced. He also has Pancreatitis and serious skin allergies that require him to eat 4 small meals of expensive prescription food a day. I make sure I keep him light as well, to minimize the chance of hip dysplasia or of him tearing an ACL, which are both common in heavy bullies, even more so in purebreds.

From a purely technical stance you don't have a pit bull, but in the end genetics and purebred status only matter if you're showing or studding him, which I DO NOT endorse since there are so many good boys and girls awaiting loving homes in shelters. He's either an AmStaff or mixed, and I would tell people that when they ask. It's my experience that many people become nervous when they hear pit bull, but think American Staffordshire Terrier sounds fancy even though the two breeds are VERY similar both genetically and temperamentally. AmStaffs come from Pit Bulls after all.

This is the one we got. My dog is 55 pounds/Labrador retriever and we got a large. It even looks more comfortable than a lampshade hah. She looks like she’s ready to go on a long trip to somewhere fun. (Which who knows when’s she’s on these painkillers hahahahaha)

If nothing else, it would open up a whole new market for peripherals. I use a wireless KB & optical mouse from my couch with Steam Link... and while it's not uncomfortable - it's not as compact and convenient as a controller. I think a more condensed WSAD pad (similar to the T9) which fits in one hand, coupled with a good stationary track ball could be extremely comfortable.

It may not occur to many people that having your hands so far apart could be comfortable. It seems unwieldy and unintuitive if you've never done it - but it really is extremely comfortable and you pick up on it almost immediately. I had one of those ASCII NGC Keyboards imported from Japan to use with PSO Ep I & II - which basically split the controller in twain and jammed a keyboard between the buttons. I thought it was going to be a pain to get used to, but really, it keeps your arms in a more natural resting state and reduces the angle your wrists have to extend.

I don't think it'll be nearly as much of an adjustment as people fear it will be, especially if devices are designed with the ergonomics of couch play (rather than desk play) in mind.

We got this for our dog after surgery and it was SOOOOO SOOOOO much easier and better for her! They sell something similar at Petco, if you don't have time to wait for shipping. Hope your pup gets well soon!

Poor pup! I have not dealt with this particular issue but my dog has atopic allergies which result in all sorts of weird skin irritations. I’ve used these anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-microbial pads on her with much success - https://www.amazon.com/Curaseb-Chlorhexidine-Wipes-Antiseptic-Antibacterial/dp/B01J972CWI Perhaps they are worth a shot?
He is still a handsome pup even with his doggy acne :)

Fish Oil and Glucosamine/Chondroitin are good joint health supplements. My girl has very mild arthritis in her elbow and that's what her orthopedist recommends. I use Iceland Pure fish oil (sardines and anchovies) and Cosequin DS.

In the mornings, let him really wake up/loosen up from any stiffness before doing any strenuous activity. Massages are good, so give a little extra tactile love.

u/thestenographer · 2 pointsr/dogs

You should get one of these. But seriously, I think my dog saved me too, I only rescued her a week ago and I couldn't have asked for a better friend.

u/accidentalhippie · 2 pointsr/dogs

This is the supplement that I used with my picky border collie. But like I said, he was severely underweight. Best of luck, and don't fret too much. Maybe your anxiety about the food is playing through to the dog?

It says on the box that it's used for tapeworms

https://www.amazon.com/Panacur-Canine-Dewormer-4-gram/dp/B000296N7S

Edit: Ok it looks like it's only effective against some kinds of tapeworms, and not the most common kind. You're right

I use this one. It works really well, especially in hard to reach places like the back teeth. Hope this helps!

This blog has a lot of info on fungal acne https://simpleskincarescience.com/pityrosporum-folliculitis-treatment-malassezia-cure/. Seems like a lot of people use Nizoral on their face, but I was a little concerned that it would either dry my face out or break me out. I've recently started using an antifungal spray for pets (https://www.amazon.com/Pet-MD-Antiseptic-Chlorhexidine-Ketoconazole/dp/B0180A1EXI). There are fewer ingredients in this compared to Nizoral, and most of the ingredients I at least somewhat recognize. I do contact therapy - leave on my face for 5-10 minutes then rinse off. Only been using this for about 5 days, but so far so good. Good luck!

I hate to reiterate what everyone has said, but you should consulte with your veterinarian.

Absent anything concerning, I highly recommend Nutri -Cal. It’s available on amazon . I’ve noticed that as each of my IG’s has gotten older they became pickier with food, and would sometimes skip meals. This was the only thing I found always worked, and would at least ensure they ate something through a period of food funk.

u/docmunkee · 1 pointr/Pitbull

Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear lol . It is a food supplement . You follow the instructions on the bottle and squirt it in the food .

There is dental cleaning without anesthesia though it is not as thorough. I'd start by looking for it in your area. Then there's dental water additive, and dental chews. There's also getting a smaller toothbrush like this and a tartar control toothpaste. My dog is an 8lb Yorkie and it fits in his mouth other reviewers claim even smaller dogs like 4lbs.

u/halfassadmin · 1 pointr/tressless

Im not op but I use regenepure. I like it a lot, but it's kinda expensive.

I also buy this (see caveat below):

Pet MD - Antiseptic and... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0180A1EXI?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It's the only Ketoconazole product I could find that was not a shampoo (I don't understand why). I like this for a leave in, but I don't know the effect of that antiseptic. It's safe, but it's not made for long term used I'd imagine so use at your own risk

u/Clockwatcher930 · 2 pointsr/dogs

I show Golden Retrievers and occasionally have one of my dogs get a stubborn yeast infection. I have successfully used this product many times and always keep it on hand. It has ketoconazole in it which is an anti-yeast/anti-fungal medication.

I havent ever used it, but you might try Angel Eyes. Its a product that you feed to your dog (or sprinkle on their food) that helps eliminate tear stains.

This stuff worked amazingly for our Bulldog. Thank you to all who responded!!!

u/legalquestions100 · 1 pointr/dogs

There’s a chance he could be a mix of multiple breeds, as in his parents were also mixes. I agree with the other commenter that he could be a bully/lab mix.

If it’s within budget for you, try getting a DNA test for him! Like this one https://www.amazon.com/Embark-Genetic-Ancestry-Discovery-at-Home/dp/B07HHF1VLH but there’s a lot more.

u/boredguy12 · 1 pointr/videos

aren't octopi super smart? i'm trying to think of toys an octopus would be interested in... like a taught rubber band he could pluck, or a crank that would power some sort of water pump that would blow bubbles when turned. What about something like one of these that does a simple light up memory game meant for dogs that dispenses treats, but water proof and crab bits.

u/w0lf3h · 2 pointsr/dogs

My first thoughts would be either pillow collar (or another form of cone like collar) or dog boots.

Fenbendazole, 1 mg/l dosis (≈12 mg for yoir tank when accojnt for substrate) for 1 week, afterwards remove it with active carbon and gravel vacuuming. Can be from e.g. Panacur. (Yes, that are 12000 mg for 12$ or 1000 times what you need). Or just ask your local vet for fenbendazole.

I use these on my baby who has bad acne outbreaks. They work like a charm!

It’s not the best if your dog is a mutt (like I said, ours just said “herding breed” for like 35%) but we used Embark.

My dog has allergies and will lick his feet raw and he scratched a hole in his head once.

We use benadryl, (1mg per lb of dog), twice a day.

You need to use actual Medicated shampoo and sprays. An oatmeal shampoo isn't going to do anything for allergies. You might need to figure out which one works for your dog.

You need to bathe the dog often to remove whatever allergens are on him. Might even need to wash his feet every time he walks through any grass or plants.

You really should consult a vet, but this will make up for some of the nutrition and calories the dog is lacking from not eating much.
