Hah, that's cool. I'd be tempted to build a plex box but because I support and install a lot of synology it makes more sense to put one of those in at home.

Talk to your local friends and see if you can find a vaguely trustworthy computer shop. You should be able to rough-in all of the lines and have them terminate and configure if you don't feel up to it.

Just run Cat6, it's great for gigabit, fine for 10gig-e up to ~50m and anyway the vast majority of stuff > 1gbit is on fiber right now. If you think you'll want to run more later just include a string to fish with when you pull your current cable.

Running network is actually pretty easy, you usually punch down on either side of a long run and use patch cables for everything else. Punch blocks have the layout printed right on them so you don't even need to look up a spec.

Parts you need

  • 24-port patch panel. May need a second smaller one if you're also doing POTS lines.
  • 8U wall-mount rack adjust for needed spaces and size. Once that go on shelves work fine too. I like the ones that hinge open for working on but they're pricey.
  • 24-port gigabit switch rackmount handy dandy. brand doesn't matter a lot since it's unmanaged, but rackmount is lovely.
  • Low voltage gang boxes much easier to deal with than a full electric box.
  • Wall plates - lots of options here. dual RJ-45 allows you to use both runs as network or phone. Combo network/coax is great for bedrooms and you can leave one network drop as a "spare". Keystone is the way to go for more complex stuff.
  • 1ft Cat-6 x whatever. Pick your favorite colors, adjust length per your design specs. Way easier than making your own!
  • UPS for devices that need it
  • Surge protector for stuff that isn't on the UPS
  • Network router w/ wifi + possibly additional access points
  • Longer ethernet patches to run from the wall to devices

I like Monoprice for a lot of stuff but not everything.

    Tools you need

  • Snips / knife to cut bulk Ethernet and strip insulator
  • A punch-down tool for the patch panels
  • Zip-ties + velcro strips for various attaching of things to other things
  • Phillips #1 & #2, Standard #1 for wall plates and rack mount
  • Fishing rod, tape, string, and other tools to get wire in wall
  • Drill, drywall saw, that sort of thing
  • Beer

Over the last 15 years I have been in an on again off again state of Frankenspeaker arrangement and I have without a doubt had zero regrets about it. It’s not going to be hard to improve your current setup for far less than your stated budget. I would pick a line of speakers that you know will have some longevity. Get the center and bookshelf speakers and then when you’re in a bigger space either get a set of the floor standers or another set of the bookshelf’s and move the old ones to the surround. Stick with big name brands that you know will have the same or at least very similar models in the next 5 years.
As far as for your space I can recommend some wall mounts. It’s not ideal but better sound is better sound and you will be happy until such time you can get it “right”.
Something like these have been a god send for me in the past when my space didn’t allow for ideal placement.speaker wall mounts

If you want you can still use those Mitsus for your rear and just crank up the dBs to those channels to at least try to normalize for volume. If you continue to wait for the platonic ideal in the future you’ll never get to hear better now.

Finally get the biggest baddest subwoofer your space will allow. I’ve had the same sub for 3/4 of my time switching out and finally getting a matching 5.1 system. The sub is not dependent on your receiver’s power capabilities and it can always be turned down if it’s too much (Ha!)
I would recommend a sealed sub simply because they’re smaller and it looks like you need all the space savings you can get.

Hey all, Im super happy to launch The Fly’s Eye Mini Mount. Its based off our Echo Dot Built in mount which has been very well received for easy installation. I only launch my stuff on Reddit so here we go. Thanks for all of the great support for the Mini Back Pack and Mini USB cover Plate. I am doing the special for 24 hours on this one rather than just the first 100 since I have more on hand.

Here is the link for the demo: https://youtu.be/b4SOG4Ay_04

I have one of these in my basement right now. The depth is adjustable, so if you don't need it deep, it can be as shallow as 12in, and at 8u, its not that much space. Mounts to the wall really easily, though make sure its in a stud, because its not light. Here is what mine looks like.

It is a square hole rack, you would also need cage nuts with screw, just buy as many as you need, no need to spend the huge bucks on a full set when you don't need them.

The shelf that you see in mine is a basic 2U shelf.

I also recommend using a keystone based system, as it allows easy expansion and change. The patch panel you see in my rack is just a generic keystone patch panel, and it is filled with a bunch of cat6 keystones, which also go in the wall plates on the other end. They are punchdowns, but they make it really easy to put more in, or move them around.

The switch is a used HP procurve 1400-24g that I picked up locally with the rack.

The thing on the very bottom of the rack is a Power Distribution Unit, and its switched. I have the Modem, switch, and Samknows whitebox(that is not my router, the router is the R210ii running PFsense, the bottom server) all on the PDU so that I can shut them all off and on with ease. Even if you don't get a switched PDU, I do recommend you get a PDU, so that you can at least just run a single plug to the rack, and then have everything bundled in in the rack neatly without power cords all over the place. The specific one in my rack is here, but there are bunches of options.

What you don't see, and the other part I recommend is you get a small UPS for all your networking gear. My entire rack is all plugged into a Cyberpower 1350AVR, and while this is total overkill for just network equipment, I recommend at least a small UPS so that in the event of a power outage, your network remains up. The UPS will also keep your devices incoming power "clean", and make their inverters run cooler and last longer. Back when all I had was a router, modem, and switch on the UPS, I had a small UPS like this, and it would keep all my gear running for about 30 minutes during outages.

If you have any questions, ask away.

This is the mount: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/TV-Wall-Ceiling-Mounts/North-Bayou-Monitor-Articulating-Displays/B0722YHHX7

Man, I've had those speakers for over 15 years now, haha. I like'm quite a bit, but I want to switch them to a "real" set next year. Probably some nice white KEFs.

And the Eaglemoss models are awesome, I love them too :)

u/sparkingthefire · 1 pointr/projectors

You are the best! Now I have all planned out for purchasing. Last question I promise...

I'm 4'8.5" but pretty scrappy. How easy is this crap to mount?
This is the one I'm looking at:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00COF74G2/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Reviews say it has pretty clear instructions but should I be calling in reinforcements or need tools? lol

u/lol_admins_are_dumb · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

Yes I know, that's the one thing this thing offers lol, it's the only real tangible benefit you've been able to find to explain why it's 10x as much as an echo dot.

BTW these two tools will give you that same "hidden wires" benefit for a whole lot less money:

https://www.amazon.com/25-Foot-Measuring-Klein-Tools-56005/dp/B0026TBOU8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1538366334&sr=8-5&keywords=fishtape&dpID=51JR4coh8YL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

And then here are the actual mounts themselves: https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Built-Google-Home-Mount/dp/B078Z214QX

EDIT Whoops that's the home mini, I'm sure there's an echo dot equivalent though. Frankly if you don't already have these assistants in your home, I would highly recommend the google version, it's a whole lot more useful and intelligent than alexa.

I might be too late here, but these are a few pics of an install that I did for a friend's girlfriend: Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3.

We added a deep wooden shelf above the TV for the game consoles, wireless router, and cable modem. It is 12 inches deep, and 12 inches longer on each side of the TV. The red superimposed lines are Legrand 1inch/25mm surface mounted cable conduit which direct the cables UP to the shelf and also route the coaxial cable for TV/internet. You need to bore a 2-inch hole in the board to route cables, which will then use a grommet to dress up the hole.

The green "box" behind the TV is a surge protector that supplies power to the TV and the electronics above. It drops out of the conduit and attaches to the Echogear articulated TV wall mount. Basically, we used the back of the TV to hide the cable octopus. You need to fit an organize these cables as you see fit, [laying them flat and parallel is the most efficient use of space].

Since we moved the electronics up to the self, the lower cabinetry we used for decorations.

Your window design looks European, so I don't know how studs and wall construction works there. But it seems like a pretty close match in area and layout as B's studio corner. Good luck!

Thank you! :)

>what are you using for the RGB lighting behind the desk? HUE? ;)

Nope :) just a simple RGB strib (with remote control) powered via USB that i've connected to my PC so, when the PC turns off, the LED strip also turns off :) You will find hundred of it on Amazon :)

Something like this one!

I suggest a wall mount like mine: http://i.imgur.com/nzUzweA.jpg

You can still maintain a proper viewing height for mounting the tv, can swing it out to the angle you prefer and it is very well constructed for the price! If you mounted the Tv above the fireplace then pulling it down to watch tv I feel would get annoying after a bit or put the fireplace out of use when watching tv.

In regards to brand and bright rooms, I am very pleased with my x900e and the only tv I would be interested in upgrading to at the moment would be an x900f. But since the two are so alike, I am more than pleased with this TV's performance. It did take a small 30 minute Saturday afternoon task to de-bloat the Tv free of any unnecessary crap to maximize the android Tv's performance, but is far worth it. Here is a link on the "how to" for de-bloating your android tv https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/general/sony-android-tv-users-t3096901/page136.

Hope this information helps make a decision for you! Lastly, here is a link to the mount I referred to in the picture provided https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J6FX6C/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

P.S. they also sell the same mount that can extend 32" vs the 28" version I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/Full-Motion-Wall-Mount-Extension/dp/B004JVAIEY/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1536332192&sr=1-4&keywords=full+motion+tv+wall+mount+32+extension

That looks great. I love those speakers. When you get the center speaker, you do want to put it on top of the cabinet so the dialog goes across the room and coffee table and get to the sofa. Rather than mount the tv on a wall, which I don't like, I prefer to mount it using a good TV Stand like this. It goes up and down so you can get it to hover just over your center channel speaker.

u/Ron_Fuckin_Swanson · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

I like the locker. I would try to age it some...maybe with paint or some sort of abrasive chemical that can petina the paint

Then I'd place it next to the front door. It would give you a little table for your keys and wallet

Then I'd get rid of the glass nightstand. It really serves no purpose with your bed on the floor.

As for the layout...I think the TV should be where the desk is, the desk should be where the TV is. Its nice to think about a window at your desk, but desks are for working. Plus, if you get a computer at some point, you could get a flush mount for your monitor and hang the monitor on the wall.

And where the open window is, I'd put a small modern Ikea style sofa. And if you got a movable TV mount, you could angle the tv towards the sofa.

As for the bed portion of the room, definitely need a rug. Maybe something in navy blue.

I think a simple platform bed frame would work the best. Then some really low style small modern night stands.

for the windows over your bed, I'd probably do Faux wood 2" window blinds in lieu of curtains. But that depends on what direction those windows face. If you get early morning sunshine you may want curtains

u/JigglyP · 2 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

Why didn't you just leave them like that?! Did the height change in the sound stage not bother you when you put them up on the shelf? Even so, neither position was optimal due to reflections and room gain. Large speakers very close to a wall and in corners = hampering your sound quality, unless they were specifically designed for that use case.

Something like this mounted on either side of your monitor would get them off the desk and reduce reflections. I think you'd find the clarity MUCH improved.

u/saggybolsack · 2 pointsr/networking

It's tough because whatever you do seems to just work. Because it's difficult to put a price tag on the cost of bad facility, rack and cable management, it's very hard to fix.

You need to make a proposal with a strong problem statement illustrated with pictures and citing past incidents if you can. Check out standards like the TIA-942 standard for items to audit. You need to ask questions like :

  • Are devices attached or could they fall to the ground ?
  • Are devices powered by a secured power source, what happens if it fails ?
  • Are devices properly identified with labels ? Can I describe to someone where to find them ?
  • Are every device and component serviceable without disconnecting something else ?
  • Is the cabling manageable ? Can I easily trace and replace a single cable ?
  • Are the device properly cooled and the air intakes and exhaust unobstructed ?

Your proposal should offer a solution for all of these problems. A trick would be to offer an expensive one as a decoy and a cheaper one :

  • Quote a wall mounted or open frame rack instead of cabinets for the switches and patch panels.

  • Could you fit the existing servers in a 2 post rack with brackets or do you need a 4 posts one ?

  • Check out rack-up velcro wraps and lacing panels instead of better but expensive cable management accessories.

Good luck fighting the good fight.

Edit : I have never used them but there are server vertical wall mount kits you could use as an alternative to 4 post racks. They probably wouldn't work with stuff like heavy SANs and UPS but should be ok for smaller servers.
u/DLFamily · 1 pointr/hometheater

I see it looks like you have a coax and outlets inside the area. I would think that after the TV and equipment are in you could hide all the wiring behind the TV pretty well. To keep everything nice and tidy I typically just use Velcro strips. You may want to get an articulating wall mount ( something like this though it would depend on the size of the TV, also they do make some with double arms, which I do NOT recomend as when you pull them all the way out they tend to kind of stick )for the TV, this could serve you in 2 beneficial ways 1. Ascetics (you could bring the TV so that it would sit flush with the edges of the inset) 2. When you need to mess with the cables you would be able to swing the TV out to get clear site of the connections. Also would leave space to mount the power strip on the wall behind the TV(possibly)

u/JennyFerFer · 1 pointr/DIY

Mounting a TV to a wall with no vertical beams. Yes, that's right. NO VERTICAL BEAMS. There are horizontal beams that run every 18 inches. The wall is next to a window. I have tried 3 different stud finders, and they've all shown the same thing.

I bought this unit (before finding out there are no vertical studs in the wall) : Mounting Dream MD2377

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00QOOZ4DE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a 42 inch flat screen Samsung TV that's roughly 7 years old.

I'd like to know the best possible way to mount this to the wall. The bracket to mount to the vertical beam (which I don't have) measures 10.5 inches long by 4.25 inches wide (at the widest parts).

I was thinking of taking a piece of plywood that was large enough to screw into both horizontal beams, but my husband is skeptical. (We are both not very home renovation inclined).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Edit: This wall is on one side of a WINDOW. There are vertical studs on either side of the window, and in the corners of the room. This house is in Canada.

u/Jarrek410 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

I'm using similar ones: B-Tech BT77

They were the cheapest in germany at the time buying, and they work pretty well. Use them at my desk with the Dali Spektor 1.

The mounts are pretty massive and i think they can hold significant bigger speakers than mine. Mounted them at a plasterboard wall and i think the wall would break earlier than the mounts. I put some felt/foam on them to decouple (?) them a bit and i dont screw on the clamps hard because i dont use them at an angle.

Please excuse my english, feel free to ask again if i missed something.

Here is the original and still looks the best imo. All my Minis are in these Mini Backpacks. You just totally do away with the cord.

Yes on the bed, and a TV mount like this one , where you could pull the window side of the tv out like 30-45 degrees so it would be facing the bed. I hope that helps! (Would never block the bathroom door)

I have a portable JBL speaker that I bring outside which is nice, but if you don’t want to buy something new, then my suggestions are:

  1. Use an extension cord.

  2. Get a portable battery for it; https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-KIWI-design-Accessories-Dark/dp/B07DMDMD15/ref=asc_df_B07DMDMD15/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312129973570&hvpos=1o7&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18151238647700118022&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019741&hvtargid=pla-570827320058&psc=1

  3. Get a wall mount like the other guy said; https://www.amazon.com/Outlet-Holder-Space-Saving-Accessories-Assistant/dp/B07B8B1ZSF/ref=asc_df_B07B8B1ZSF/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309750549985&hvpos=1o10&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13200066057260710994&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019741&hvtargid=pla-523365044107&psc=1

There is an in the wall/ceiling mount, but I don’t think it would be the best for having to move it inside during the winter. (https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Built-Google-Home-Mount/dp/B078Z214QX/ref=asc_df_B078Z214QX/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=242074892521&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13200066057260710994&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019741&hvtargid=pla-420564720238&psc=1)
u/jsamhead · 2 pointsr/battlestations

That's true. That would be a good solution. I'd also consider mounting the monitor to the wall using something very similar like this. You could even do the same thing on the opposite side of the window with a second monitor and have 2 nice big monitors that can move together or apart, all across your desk space.

u/DynamicBits · 1 pointr/homelab

I only see two items that are actually rack mountable. One thing to consider is a vertical wall mount bracket for the Netgear switch and patch panel. These brackets can be used horizontally as well, so you could even mount them to the bottom of one of the existing wooden shelves. Once the switch is taken care of, everything else can be mounted in a much shallower space.

If you want an enclosed wall mount cabinet, the Tripp Lite SRW12US and
Tripp Lite SRW10US both support a mounting depth of up to 20.5". If you go this route, make sure the antennas on the wireless APs are located where their signal isn't blocked.

For about $100, you can get the Tripp Lite SRWO8U22 2-post open frame "cabinet," or the Kendall Howard 2-post 8U rack. Both support up to 18" mounting depth.

The StarTech RK12OD desktop 2-post rack for $46.99 is an interesting alternative to normal racks. Due to the slope, you want to be sure any equipment on a cantilevered shelf is somehow prevented from sliding off. Just set the DS1813+ at the bottom, between the posts.

With any rack/cabinet, you're probably still going to need a couple of cantilever shelves to hold the non-rack mountable equipment. With an enclosed cabinet, you can use the bottom and top as shelves. You could even cheat and put some of the lighter items on the Netgear switch.

Also, be careful how you stack the equipment that wasn't designed to be rack mounted. A lot of it will vent the heat up instead of out the back.

Until you put an air duct in the closet itself, I doubt there will be much circulation in there. Be careful about putting all of the equipment up high because all of the hot air will be more or less trapped above the door louvers.

u/thetonyk123 · 2 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

I'm assuming you have drywall with wood studs. All you really need is the wall mount, a drill, and a stud finder. A pencil would be useful aswell for marking stuff out.

You'll need to locate your wall studs. You can do this using a basic stud finder. Use the stud finder to locate and mark a stud close to where you want the screen to be. You might not get it exactly where you want it because studs are only placed every so often, 16" on center is common. Then after your sure a stud is there (I always knock on the wall and listen to double check) you can start to mount it. You'll need to buy the actual mount. I use this basic wall mount for one of my screens and it is quite adjustable. Align the wall mount along the stud to where you want it then drill pilot holes for the screws. After you drill the pilot holes just screw the mount in. Try pulling on it a bit just to make sure its stable and secured into the stud. Then (if you bought the mount I linked) you just screw the plate into the back of your monitor and slide it in. If all goes well it should be mounted solidly to the wall.

I have a similar built-in next to a fireplace. I seriously considered walling over it, but didn't want to lose the space in the cutout to house some gear (consoles, AVR, etc).

Ended up buying this Aeon wall mount that sticks out super far: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JVAIEY/

Now we have a 65" TV that's wider than the cutout, so it looks a little goofy... but it works and it's about the only way to get a decent sized TV into our living room space (our living room layout suuuuucks and is the primary reason we're still saving up to buy a different house).

As a bonus, if you go this route you may be able to keep some of the shelves and be able to hide some gear behind the TV.

In the states we're allowed to have plug receptacles at or near the sink/vanity, but they have to be GFCI (ground fault circuit interruptor) protected. Basically it cuts power if there's a short.

I'm using the dot genie backpack: Dot Genie Google Home Mini Backpack: The Simplest and Cleanest Outlet Wall Mount Hanger Stand for Home Mini Voice Assistants by Google - No Cord Wrapping Required - Designed in USA (White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078JNBMDG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2YSuDbHCRWQSY

It's pretty great. Gets rid of the cable mess, and actually makes the mini portable, this one goes between the kitchen and bathroom based on need. And it actually surprisingly sounds better in that mount than sitting on a flat surface.

Thank you, unfortunately this is some cheap monitor arm I bought online here in Poland it cost around 25$.

Looks more or less like this:
https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Z1-Basic-capacity-adjustment/dp/B01N2QIFSQ

However, I do NOT recommend this kind of monitor arms.
The monitor would wiggle a bit after I mounted it each time I used my keyboard.

Fortunately as you can see in the picture, my room has this wooden element that's flush with the wall and on both sides of it there's like 25 cm of space that's ~7cm deep.

I managed to adjust the arm to fit in there so

  1. It's much more stable since some of its weight is supported by the wooden element.

  2. Monitor is much further back than it'd normally be. This model requires a vesa adapter which adds couple of centimeters making it too close for my likings.
u/homeboi808 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Yes, 5.1 would need to be activated and the content would need to be 5.1. However, most every single program is these days, so not to worry. A center <4" tall is hard to find, and since you want it the sound signature to blend with the speakers you have now, I would say yes to that Polk center and yes to an above mount, just make sure it can hold the weight, which that bracket you listed is 10lb too light. You probably need something like this.

u/holzer · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Sorry, but what is it exactly you're looking for? Your post isn't exactly clear. Speaker wall mounts come in all forms and sizes so while you can debate what is "aesthetically pleasing" there should be something for everyone. I personally have a pair of b&w 686 rears hanging from these and while they're not the best looking they are very sturdy and secure even for a comparatively deep speaker like that. You don't really see the mounts as the speaker is in front of them anyways.

u/ArizonaLad · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Get a weight on the TV. Lets say 35 pounds, for instance. Then decide on what mount you want. I am going to suggest a MantleMount:

https://www.amazon.com/MantelMount-MM340-Standard-Bracket-Fireplace/dp/B01MS1MHET

That will fit up to an 80" TV, so you're good there.

Next is the screwing it to the wood. The max those studs can be separated from edge to edge is 20". See the installatin manual here:

http://www.electricfireplacesdirect.com/pdfs/MM340_Installation_Manual.pdf

Because the two orange painted uprights look like 1 X 4's, I do not think that lag bolts would have enough bite into the wood. If it was my installation I would drill completely through the wood and use toggle bolts:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Crown-Bolt-3-16-in-x-2-in-Zinc-Plated-Mushroom-Head-Toggle-Bolt-Anchor-15-Piece-10282/202563869

Alternatively, is that a closet on the back side of the fireplace? If so, you could add additional bracing in the wall from the rear.

NOTE: The MantleMount I linked to is the entry level one. If your TV requires a soundbar, then you'd want this version:

https://www.amazon.com/MantelMount-MM540-Mount-Fireplace-Mantel/dp/B01N5JMX8G

Hope that helps you.

Yeah, it's this one from Amazon: Amazon Basics Heavy Duty TV Wall Mount I had a 34" ultrawide monitor on the stand but wanted it in line with the wheel base, so I found this and gave it a shot. Worked great!

u/Ineverpayretail2 · 0 pointsr/StandingDesk

Really depends on the weight rating of the articulating arm.

Not sure if there are cost effective way to mount the tv to the wall and also have it slide up and down the wall. I would also imagine it being a huge pain to adjust every time you change desk position.

I would just place the monitor on the desk, and make sure that it is at the correct eye level, Also with a screen that big I imagine that you already have a deep enough desk to accommodate the viewing distance.

EDIT- Ok your situation got me curious and I remembered there is this product called a mantel mount. Which would allow for an easy vertical adjustment, but not sure if the range of motion is enough for your situation.

Also maybe you can frankenstein a dual articulating arm, and combine the two vesa plates to one singular vesa mount to mount onto the TV, which begs the question, does your tv have vesa mounting holes? If not, maybe you can just attach the Vesa plates to the back of your tv, you would need to do a lot of DIY, opening it up and making sure you drill correctly and have proper backing. My biggest concern of attaching an arm mount directly to your desk top is that it would be too heavy and won't be stable at the mounting point. You would need to drill into the desktop and possibly reinforce it with a wide piece of steel or which wood to compensate.

u/ifixpedals · 1 pointr/homeautomation

How about a Google Mini speaker in each room where a speaker once was? If you have 5 rooms, it'll cost $250 (not including adapters and materials.) It wont sound super amazing, and it's still pricey, but better than $1000.

I might try this: You could replace your speaker mounting with one of these if they are of comparable size. I might try to replace the existing speaker wire with low voltage/current power cable, so the power adapters will be nestled away where the head unit currently is.

Or if you want to do it right, one could replace the speaker entirely with a recessed light housing, wire it up with full power, and use a socket adapter like this to mount a smart speaker. Then if you decide to remove the speaker down the road, the hole can become a light fixture.

(Edit: I just read your comment about being able to easily run power, so disregard the crossed-out bit.)

General rule of thumb is that standard speakers will significantly outperform a soundbar solution of the same price. You'd want to pick front-ported speakers because they'll be jammed against the wall though.

However...

Strongly consider something like this so that you can swing the TV down to a reasonable eye level. Some models have soundbar mounts, or are compatible with add-on soundbar mounts. I'd rather have one of these and use the TV's stock speakers than strain my neck looking at a TV seven feet in the air.

Some of the articulating tv mounts have a tall and narrow mount to the wall, and because the mount moves around you can position the tv a bit more ideally despite where it’s mounted. Something like this:

most centers have both a rear port and a keyhole hanger.

from my experience the center channel is almost entirely used for speech/voices in movies, so you really arent going to be blowing a hole in the wall with that.

That said I don't know how the center speaker performs in all channel stereo, or other settings.

If you are concerned about mounting directly to the wall you can find fairly cheap arms like these. although likely more useful for a sound bar they can do the trick with relatively little disruption to the look of your setup. (just make sure you know how to mount things to your type of wall)

Go on Amazon, type in the kind of wall mount you're looking for "full motion, tilt, or slim" and the size TV (Small, medium, large) and buy a new one. Make sure the VESA size of the mount matches or exceeds that of your TV. You can find this out by measuring the bolts from end to end on the back, or by looking up specs online.

The new mount will not only come with all new hardware, but should run you between $12 and $40 depending what you're looking for. I bought this one on Amazon for $29, it's full motion and I could mount it to allow my 46" TV to come out a full 90 degrees from the wall.

As for the minor renovation, I would paint behind the the tv to color match the columns (make it all look like one piece), then add an articulating tv mount such as this. Also, look to move that cable box (maybe mount it behind the TV or in the cabinet beside) and get an IR repeater or RF remote.

I would suggest mounting it where the mirror is and using a pull down style mount. Something like this:

Mount-It! Fireplace TV Mount, Full Motion Pull Down Mantel TV Mounting Bracket with Height Adjustment, Fits 40-70 Inchs TVs, 70 lbs Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0767YJDLT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lwsTCbND6DMHF

I got one myself as I wanted my deskspace back.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Cooling-Z-2-Dual-Monitor/dp/B006OM75I8

That's the one I use and I really like it. Holds 2 27" monitors without issue.

If you are mounting a TV above the fireplace, do yourself a favor and get a pull down TV mount. That way you can watch your TV at a reasonable height and not have to constantly look up at it:

That's the mount. Smaller arm but it does extend. I'm not opposed to attaching to plywood just wondering how necessary that is.

Hey OP if you scoot that desk over I bet you've got plenty of room for a vertical 19" rack like this. Then you could get that server off the floor.

Looks like this one

u/SoDak12 · 1 pointr/hometheater

I’d use this mount and go with the largest tv that would fit. Also blackout top and bottom blinds. Sound choice will be the next step. No doubt projector in the basement where you have better space and light/sound controls.

I like this guy for my kitchen with white subway tile backsplash.

There are a bunch of mounts/shelves built for google home minis.

Something like this for example.

I’m not aware of any purpose built units or anything thats not kind of hacky though.

Two things you need to do ASAP:

Order a MantelMount so you can pull down the TV to a proper viewing angle. Order a shelf for underneath the TV for your center channel.

The shelf mounts to the bottom of your MantelMount. Make sure you get the one with 2 shelves so the bracket is long enough to give you the space underneath your TV.

Thanks! To be honest the entire experience of mounting my screen above the other was pure luck, I didn't even consider that I'd have to find a stud in the wall but one happened to be there, I used this mount https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025PKFUI/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_QyQFyb0WBWGZJ and unfortunately it's just a generic IKEA desk.

So, that one - right? Did you just use the existing screws in the back of the monitor?

Sorry for bugging you, I just ordered the monitor and I REALLY don't wanna fuck this up.

If I were using something like these mounts to mount the front speakers (L+R), how detrimental would that be to the sound of rear port speakers? I know optimal distance is different per speaker, but it doesn't seem like I'd be able to get these much further than a few inches from the wall.

u/rogue780 · 1 pointr/projectors

So, you should have screw holes on the bottom of your projector. They are designed to work with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/QualGear-PRB-717-WHT-Universal-Projector-Accessory/dp/B00COF74G2 (I'm not endorsing this specific product. It was the first one that came up when I searched for projector ceiling mount).

These kinds of mounts let you adjust the exact angle of your projector relative to the wall/screen.

If you're set on using the mount that you have, you're going to need to place some objects under the front of your projector to raise the angle and eliminate the keystone as much as possible.

Same idea as the shelf, these brackets mount on your wall and then you place your speaker on top.

This one extends 32" from the wall, I have it and it's extremely solid. It may be overkill for your application, but I consider it a BIFL purchase. Keep in mind that you will be mounting to the studs, which may have to be patched when you move out and take it with you.

u/protogenxl · 1 pointr/synology

that cover is going to trap heat, better to use a open frame.

I got this:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B002MP5JX4/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2 screws in each one, both into studs. It came with wall anchors too if studs were not possible. Seems Rock solid so far.

u/oreo-cat- · 1 pointr/AmateurRoomPorn

Try one of these. You can run a cable down and not bother the landlord.
