>I have been having insanely jigh temps of 100c on my cpu. I have heard thag alienware’s thermal paste and application is a cause for this.

Yes and no. The 15R3 is a few years old now and thermal paste does not last forever, especially in laptops with lower mounting pressure. Dell's stock paste is built more for longevity and not performance so after some time it is pretty normal to need new paste to get the temps back under control. It's especially common in gaming laptops that run hot and have higher end hardware then your typical $500 laptop. Also if you have not tried a can of compressed air to blow out the fans / fins then that would be a good place to start. Even with fresh paste , if the fans are clogged then you will get high temps. I

>There is a local computer repair shop that said that they can repaste it, should i go to their shop and pay them to do it( i am not concerned for price and i have no idea how to do it, im worried that i will mess something up)

If your truly unable to do this yourself ( lots of people are ) then take it to someone and have them do it. Nothing worse then taking apart your $$$$ laptop and once it's back together something isn't working and you don't know where to start looking. On that note there are A LOT of tutorials , videos and teardowns online that can help you with this should you decide to tackle it on your own.

>Should i undervolt? How? And what do i set it to?

Absolutely you should, it's the easiest way to reduce temps and in some cases even improve performance as the CPU won't be running as hot which can allow for high boost speeds and higher sustained clocks. Despite what some have recently been claiming, undervolting will NOT void your warranty. As for what should you set it to, that is something YOU need to figure out. Every CPU is different and requires a different amount of voltage to remain stable. What works for someone else won't necessarily work for you. Your best bet is to start low and test to see if it's stable and then work your way up from there until you find your sweet spot. For example my 7820hk is stable at -.135 but some people can go higher, or not even get that far , it's all up to the silicone lottery.

>What paste should i use? I heard that thermal grizzly kryonaut is runny and can dry up at higher temps such as laptop tems so which one is best suited for this scenario( dont want to use lm because im not experienced enough and its risky)

Kryonaut is great paste, but it's not great for longevity in laptops that run hot and don't have great mounting pressure. I see a lot of people who use Kryonaut and it works GREAT...for a few weeks / months and then the temps start to creep up again. I have used Kryonaut in the past and it was just OK. I switched to IC Diamond around a year ago and my temps are just as good now as they were the first day I put it on AND my core differentials are almost non existent. Keep in mind that most pasts are going to be within just a few degrees of each other provided the repaste job is done properly. Going from Kryonaut to IC Diamond I actually saw a decrease in temps, probably due to mounting pressure and thinner paste , and I had to lay the Kryonaut on pretty thick. There are a ton of great pastes out there....IC Diamond, Gelid, Thermal Grizzly, Arctic MX-4, ...lots to choose from. This was a great comparison from a few years back showing the difference in a controlled test.

>Should i get a laptop stand

If you want to invest in something that two bottle caps can do just as well , sure? I think a better question is do you need a laptop stand? You can get the same results by just propping the back up with basically whatever you think will work. I do use a coolermaster U3 , but mostly because I sit on my couch with my laptop on my lap and the stand keeps it raised while still being comfortable. I also have a set of something like this and they work just as well when I don't feel like dragging around my cooling pad. Don't believe all the hype about the cooling fans in the coolers either, the stock fans are not really good for much TBH.

You do have some pretty practical things on your wish. I'll try to keep my choices under $75 in case you really want something, that way you can buy it right away (or even buy a few things at one time)!

  1. This Pillow can be very important for you if you really need a new pillow and/or don't sleep well at night. New, comfy pillows can really help with staying cool, clean, and comfortable at night.

  2. This Laptop Cooler also seems very important. If your laptop does get very hot, or you can't use it on your lap, then you need this! This cooler/stand/lap thing will really help as your laptop will stay cool, last longer, run faster, and you can use it on your lap and on the go!

  3. Rechargeable Battereis are always very important as they save time, money, and the earth! You don't have to buy batteries all the time, you can have new batteries ready all the time, and you don't have to throw batteries away when they die!

  4. Got to have some NSFW fun every once in a while

  5. Nutella... That's all I have to say

  6. Music is very important. It is always good to have a decent pair of ear buds so you can always relax, jog, bike, clean, or do anything to music!

I may add more stuff to the list, but you get the point! Go for important, but also fun, stuff!

Surprise me and pick anything from my wishlist! :D

I'm the guy who nearly tossed my x201 (2.67 Ghz i7 with turbo boost up to 3.3Ghz, 8gb ram, 256 gb SSD). About 6 months ago it started over-heating to the point of dying every twenty minutes. I had to have one of these monsters attached to the vent whenever I used it. That vacuum fan was a big hassle to carry around and meant I was 1 USB port down. About 3 months ago the internal wifi card stopped working so I bought one of these. Those tiny usb wifi cards suck because the antenna is so small, and that also meant I was another USB port down. Finally, the plastic door to my hard-drive bay cracked so my hard-drive kept slipping out in my back-pack.

I ended up buying thermal paste on amazon (~$10), a new wifi chip on ebay (~$8), a new fan (~$5) and a new hard-drive door (~$6). It took me about 3 hours to take the laptop apart, and another two to put it back together. I re-pasted the CPU, replaced the fan (just to be safe... the old one worked fine), and installed the new wifi card. I had to completely disassemble twice after completely re-assembling it (god that sucked) first because the power-port wasn't aligned with the chassis and plug would not go into the laptop, and second because I didn't run the wifi antenna cables very well. I still need to buy and install a new thermal pad for the GPU - I didn't order one because I didn't expect to find one in there (thought it would be all paste). The current GPU thermal pad is cracked and aging.

Anyway, now my x201 is back together and working like a charm. Wifi signal is great, and it runs nice and cool (~40 degrees idle - it's still breaking in). Ran 20 cycles of IntelBurnTest on "High" and it passed with flying colors. I have all of my USB ports available, battery lasts longer. And the SSD doesn't slip out of the bay all the time. All in all, definitely worth the effort and minimal money! Here she is in all her ThinkPad glory.

If you want to get the best performance you can, I would recommend getting a laptop cooling pad. When a computer had to do a lot of work it generates heat, in order to protect it self from overheating your computer will purposely slow it's self down. Getting a laptop cooling pad will help with heat generation and is the cheapest and easily thing you can do to get a performance boost from your laptop.

Cheapest decent looking one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KZALHGK/

Highest rated one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M715BCV/

The one I used to have (I liked it, it was good): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002NU5O9C/

u/user17600 · 1 pointr/cordcutters

Yes, that one. (I paid full price tho - jeez Amazon tells me I bought it almost 3 years ago)

As I said above, like many powerful routers this one runs hot. Get a cheap USB-powered laptop cooling pad (even this cheapo is prob okay - https://smile.amazon.com/AICHESON-Cooling-Lightweight-Portable-Notebook/dp/B01KZALHGK/ref=sr_1_19?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1540818198&sr=1-19&keywords=laptop+cooler) - pick one on noise level if it's going to be in an occupied room (mine is in a hallway, away from bedrooms).

I have a 15 year old cooling pad that I got from some random place plugged into the USB port on the router and it keeps the CPU temp down in the 40's (C) - uncooled the router will spike into the 80's. Cooled, the router will last much longer.

Good luck on the move and you're welcome.

u/emdc · 2 pointsr/AlienwareAlpha

Thanks man, I've been slowly upgrading as I find deals. I did a decent amount of looking for a laptop cooler, and I ended up with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003ZUXXWO/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is incredibly sturdy, made of metal "heavy mesh" has a nice "lift" off the ground and the fan moves more air than I would expect from a laptop cooler. It just feels like a quality product, and there is are buttons to turn the fan and LEDs off independently. The things I don't like are no usb passthrough (I just have it plugged into a hub, so that doesn't bother me) and the fan pulls air down, not push it up which id imagine would allow for better cooling. You might be able to do better, but this looks nice, it's $25ish, good quality, good looks, and I think it's going to last for quite a while. I'd buy it again in a second.

u/Malarte · 1 pointr/Guildwars2

I have a "hot" laptop also. One of the best things you can do is buy a powered notebook cooler and always keep the laptop on it. After trying out different ones, I swear by this Antec base: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Notebook-Cooler-USB-Powered/dp/B0000BVYTV/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1345646536&sr=8-4&keywords=antec+fan+base

It has a metal grid top, with two powerful fans underneath, and runs off the USB slot. It really makes a big difference. Another thing you can do, any slots that have plastic "holders" (like card slots), take those out, to create more open spaces. And finally, always sit the computer, even on a fan base, on a hard surface. Also clean out the computer and base fans regularly.

I also have a mini "hot pad" I made to rest my left hand on, as that side tends to get hot while gaming...

u/egrodo · 1 pointr/razer

Late 2016 Razer Blade non-4k here.

As far as durability, I'd say it's easily up there with Macs. It's built very solidly and has held up being thrown around my backpack easily. I haven't abused it too much though because it's still my baby. No hardware issues.

I love the design of it. Very sleek and definitely an eye-catcher. The keyboard is one of the best laptop keyboards available and the size means it's not too hard to pull out bus or car ride. You don't want to play intensive games while it's on your lap because your legs will block the downward fans, but that's the same with any laptop. Pick up one of these and you'll be fine.

Definitely worth the price for me as a student who needs to bring my laptop with me to and from school but wants to still be able to play games on the go.

u/z0mgPenguins · 1 pointr/laptopama

So I don't know much about heat throttling so I can't say much there.

Played a few hours of PayDay 2 and Left for Dead last night with mostly maxed settings (except for Anti-Aliasing-- turned that off as it made both games freak and crash). Both games ran pretty smoothly nor did I notice my laptop running warm. I do have it on top of one of this thingy here but wasn't plugged in. At one point, one of our PayDay games was pretty laggy but I was playing online, in a house, with 4 people playing LoL and 2 people playing Starcraft so I'm assuming it was just the interwebs and not the laptop itself as my PayDay buddy was lagging as well.

I just ran a Benchmark test using Unigen Valley with these settings and got these results:

When laptop was running on battery

When laptop was plugged in

Both instances, the GPU was running around 54-62c (at least, from what I remember)

On the Battery

I decided to go on battery power around 3:00 PM. It's now 4:30 and my battery is at 17%.

Round two on Battery
Okay, I'm gonna try changing Sager's settings to battery saving and we'll see how it goes.

u/Reyrx · 1 pointr/Overwatch

When I don't have access to my gaming rig I play on my ultrabook that I use for university. It only has a powersaving i5 and integrated intel graphic + 4GB RAM. The game works suprisingly well on all low/disabled and 1280x720 (instead of 1080p) at around 20-30fps. It is playable, but obviously far from ideal, but I can bear it for a day of two when I'm away from my rig. The issue with this is the same as yours: the temperatures. The ultrabook only has very small fans that don't really do anything at all. Using a cooling pad with some extra fans has worked fine, so you might want to check out some of those. They're not really expensive. The one I have costs 30$ and works very well. You can of course buy some of the more higher end solutions for this, but I don't know how much better they actually are.

u/TaoTeChing81 · 2 pointsr/ipad

It's a 10.5" (per title).. but I put it in my cart, hold for later. I am going to try this >> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BZ4TYM << and attach it to the bottom of my Logitech Slim Combo with a detachable keyboard and see if that works. It's about the right rise. I already have a "Tile" attached to the bottom, so I know things stick well (using 3M easy remove.) But yours looks interesting too. Thanks.

u/fallenarist0crat · 2 pointsr/thesims

I’ve never used a macbook, but I’ve seen another ask like this before about overheating. I think someone suggested a cooling pad like this one.

Oh, and for the lagging, there’s plenty of posts out there about cutting the lag down... most which consist of renaming your cc to exclude special characters like ( _ and what not. Try googling it. Good luck!

u/llamaman456 · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Lets start with reducing the temps, make sure to use the laptop on a flat surface like a desk or table.Because of the location of vents in this particular model its going to be somewhat more difficult to utilize a diy solution like propping to up with a large hard cover book. You should also consider investing in a cooling pad, these https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00CPZJP7M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1499490950&sr=8-3&keywords=cooling+pad+cooler+master work well becuase you can adjust the fans. Basically you want to create cool airflow through the case, by having one fan blowing air into the case, at one side of long vent on the bottom and one on the opposite side pulling the air out.

u/Psychemm · 7 pointsr/buildapc

For it to be safe, do this ^/s

Biggest issue with oc'ing laptops is heat, and it'll build up quickly since the components are in such a small space. You can do it, but for it to be considered safe, get a laptop cooling pad. I have this one and it kept my old laptop pretty cool when I used it (I didn't OC of course).

Even then, I'd only overclock it a little, not like you would in a desktop.

^ninja ^edit

u/BestBeating · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

So this is the fight between specifications, price and quality/durability. Titanium version GPU it's better of course, you can check this GPU benchmark compare. In this price range both competitors are good, they have own pluses and minuses. Im thinking about durability so I would choose Dell, but if you need a beast with a good specifications you can go with Acer Nitro there is opportunities to cool laptop with cooling pads etc.

u/Indoorsman · 6 pointsr/gaming

I bought this one to replace the old one I gave to my dad along with my old HP laptop that I also gave him.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B003ZUXXWO/ref=aw_d_cr_electronics?qid=1317703980&sr=8-5

The HP has a quad core AMD and decent mobile dedicated GPU that gets so hot, the area next to the caps lock key and tab button will burn you. The area near the trackpad literally burned the salt from my sweat onto the surface when I used it in class. With the pad I linked, those problems went away, it's still warm sure, but the temps dripped considerably.

Also if you are past your warranty, google "how to clean (your laptop model)". And you will probably come across a forum with pics of a model close to yours, so you can pop the bottom off and clean out the fan cavities, which are professional dust collectors.

u/B_Yanarchy · 1 pointr/razer

A heavy duty cooling pad brought my framerates up WAY more than I thought it would, I can't recommend one enough. I use this one, its a bit pricey but absolutely worth every penny. I get about a 5-10 degree difference on the CPU and GPU. That particular cooler is great because you can plug it into the wall with a standard micro USB charger, which not only powers the fan but also the 4-port USB hub to prevent overworking the Blade's port.

u/CloneDeath · 2 pointsr/gaming

I made the same mistake. In the meantime, I recommend this cooling pad:

http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Minimized-Cooler-Notebook-NC2000B/dp/B0012WXFO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369260946&sr=8-1&keywords=Cooling+pad+ZMNC2000

I know it's pricey, but I guarentee you, it's amazing, and it will fix your overheating issues, and be a nice hold over for a couple years until you get that desktop up.

Trust me on this. I'd lend you mine so you can see for yourself, but I doubt you live near Georgia Tech.

u/CanIbiteU · 1 pointr/Alienware

Got this thing today https://www.amazon.com/AVANTEK-Laptop-Cooler-Cooling-Lights/dp/B00L36CEYU
Lost around 5 degrees in idle, in games that ran at 75-80° around 8° XCOM2 runs with 70-73° now, demanding stuff like destiny 2 beta - around 3-5° it was at 87-90° before now its 84-86°

It certainly helps, maybe other cooling pads models are better, not sure if i keep this one and get another one with more powerful fans. The thing iv got is very silent on the other hand.

u/samaelestevez · 2 pointsr/razer

Just few tips as we all do with alienware laptops :

  • raise up the backend of the laptop to have more airflow , personally im using this ( https://www.amazon.fr/ergonomique-aluminium-refroidissement-ordinateurs-portables/dp/B007BD16KC )

  • try to undervolt your cpu to get much less temps with throttlestop as it is much reliable than xtu , you can google this to figure it out

  • DONT OVERCLOCK your cpu with the shitty stock thermal past

  • for the current recent games you dont even need extra clocks speed even you can disable turbo boost to have even less temps while playing games as i said you can do this through thottle stop program , im playing battlefield 1 and the division and im disabling this turbo boost

  • finally try to install GeForce experience and get your Nvidia gpu updates from there and use the optimize settings for your games

Welcome to the club bro 😊

I hope i didn't forgot any other tips ,lets see if other users have more tips to help you

This to make your laptopping more pleasent and still have money to get adorable Ukulele!

You'll still have $12.12 to get yourself something of your high priority list or whatever you've really had your eye on! If I gifted someone a gift card, I would just want them to really treat themselves!

u/DeWat4 · 3 pointsr/Alienware

Best bet is to undervolt the processor using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and to prop up the back of the laptop with feet. It also would help to take the back cover off and blow out all of the dust.

If you really know what you're doing, you can repaste the processor and graphics card byfollowing this guide.

There isn't much the repair depot can do. If it's still under warranty, I've heard you can request a repair technician to come to your house and repaste it with thermal paste that you provide, but your mileage may vary. They can repaste it with their thermal paste, but buying something like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut would work a lot better than their stuff.

u/starkiddlive · 1 pointr/techsupport

This generally is a cooler issue, as being on a desk prevents air flow from ALL of your vents. Your best bet, if you're on a budget, is to get an external USB cooler. You can get a decent one for about $15. Here's one I personally recommend. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075TSFV9T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YfZADbAMQF1KX

If you need an even MORE budget-saving option, use small objects to prop your laptop up. As long as there is space between the vents and the surface below it, you should see improvement.

u/Retrikaethan · 2 pointsr/Vermintide

well i posted said comment shortly after this one hahah, this is the thing i was thinking of. you really need something like that to keep laptops cool after a certain point. also, you reallllly need to clean out the dust regularly so the cooling stuff can work and the laptop will last longer.

u/dugmartsch · 0 pointsr/videos

Have an xps 1645 and it runs very hot, even with a crazy cool pad it still runs hotter than I'd like.

Without one, or with my shitty cool pad, watch where you touch it, (the front is kind of dangerous). They're replacing the motherboard and heat sink tomorrow but they've done that before. Here's hoping.

The warranty is flippin ridiculously nice though, ten minutes chatting online with tech support and they're replacing the parts in two days at my house.

Then as far as storage goes, you can either offload games you don't play to an external (not the best option) or you can add an addition SSD. I bought a Samsung Evo 960/970 M.2 drive on Amazon and installed it myself. There are videos to help. I'll send you a link for that as well.

I've had this one for about 5 years. It's finally starting to die on me since I use it all the time, but I would highly recommend it!

Again depending on how high your graphics settings are and how well your on board cooling system works, you'd probably be good with just something cheap and simple from Walmart!

Cooler Master Storm SF-17. Bit expensive but my laptop is >$3500... It works great btw. Lowers my temps by 3-5 degrees when not gaming ( compared to a flat surface ). When I am gaming, easily 8-10 degrees ( compared to flat surface). Also ports ports ports

What are PCs specs?

You could try running the game at a lower general resolution. Some people run their game at 1600x900 (Bizzle does too actually, but it’s for looks in his case) instead of 1920x1080. Make sure you have all background applications closed, open up task manager and see if anything’s using more than 5-10% of your CPU. Also make sure the epic launcher closes whenever you start the game, I remember that used to cause some people some issues

Also, https://www.userbenchmark.com/Software, you can try running this benchmark here. It’ll compare your parts to how well other’s run, and if it notices anything you can fix, it should give you some info on the specific part

Also, disable the Vsync option in fortnite, that’s a big one. I can’t run any game with Vsync enabled, it’s incredibly notorious for ruining frames, for whatever reason

Lastly, I noticed you were in a laptop, consider getting one of these to help keep your laptop at ideal temperatures.

Thanks to the other people who replied to this thread, I found out that the game does, in fact, have a slider to adjust the scaling! I glossed over the settings because I assumed that all sliders were related to audio. However, Classic mode is still impossible to play, due to everything else remaining small and the zoom being disabled.

As for the lapboard, I'm actually using something that I'd purchased for my laptop a while back: a "laptop lap desk with pillow cushion", by Cooler Master (that particular model seems to be discontinued, though, and this is the one currently available - same size, different color).

It's not ideal. I can barely fit my Logitech wireless keyboard (K830) and mousepad (by Evoluent) on top of it. But I did some research last year, when I built my PC (I had been primarily a console gamer for the last decade), and all "true" lapboard options had terrible reviews. What seemed to be the better one - the Lapdog, by Corsair - is wired, which kinda defeats the purpose

So, I decided to wait and use what I already had as a temporary solution. Now, I'm considering getting this... thing, also by Corsair. The lapboard is available separately, but since it's made for that specific Corsair keyboard (the K63), it's not worth it if you already have your own device that you enjoy. The mousepad is integrated, so you also have to take that into consideration.

Paul (from Paul's Hardware YouTube channel) has a good video showing that product (and a few others). He starts using the setup at the 16:40 mark.

any artic silver lying around? I'd also get something like speedfan and make sure rpms good. A cooling pad might be the next purchase. I bought a Zalman for someone, it was awesome.

this one

u/stormhart · 1 pointr/Alienware

Try to elevate the back of your laptop for better ventilation and to help the cooling system work better.

I personally use this on my Alienware 17 R4. https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B007BD16KC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Without it, playing Overwatch brings the CPU temperatures to 90-100C. With it, CPU temperatures are about 65-75C.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/hardware

I have a Zalman that I am in love with. It lowers the temp. of my 2008 asus g50-VTX from 110C (max) to 85-90C (max). It has an extra USB port to make up for the one it uses. It's only caveat for what you want is that it's a solid aluminum body (very good for cooling, aluminum dissipates heat very well) which is heavy and could get uncomfortable on a lap. I personally use it on top of a lap desk

u/ninja_toitel · 1 pointr/razer

Definitely! In fact, if you're going to be using it as your primary driver and doing heavy duty gaming or CPU intensive tasks, I would highly recommend a cooler mat to help lower noise and extend the life of the case fans. Here's a link to the one I have:

u/Idoiocracy · 0 pointsr/GamingLaptops

Lenovo's Y540 chassis design seems well thought out for cooling. There is a large vented area on the bottom that maintains physical clearance when the laptop is sitting. Out of the box, the CPU does throttle under heavy load, but this behavior is inherent to default laptop CPU settings on any Intel CPU. Using HWiNFO64, I measured the following temperatures:

  • CPU and GPU average idle: 45 °C (113 °F)
  • CPU maximum temperature during load (triggering throttling): 97 °C (207 °F)
  • GPU maximum temperature during load: 65 °C (149 °F)

    With a cooling pad, I saw temperatures drop 2-4 °C (4-8 °F) -- not very significant.

I plan on undervolting the CPU so that it hopefully does not throttle nearly as much while maintaining a high clock speed and performance.

Civilization 6 Gathering Storm benchmarks on my Lenovo Y540 (i7-9650H, RTX 2060, 16 GB RAM) show:

  • Steady 60-70 FPS
  • Average Frame Time: 14.676ms
  • 99th Percentile: 28.260ms
  • Artificial Intelligence benchmark - Average Turn Time: 38.82

Check out Dave Lee's Youtube review of the Lenovo Y740, which is similar to the Y540.
u/FazedOut · 1 pointr/Deusex

Ah... in that case, I guess you really can't upgrade too much. It should still be sufficient, though you'd do well to keep it on a flat surface like a lap desk, and use a cooling pad.

Personally, I use the Antec cooling pad, and find it does ok. The actual built in fan on my laptop never engages full speed when I use it (YMMV)

u/jwradar · 3 pointsr/Austin

When I didnt have cash for repair, I bought a USB powered fan to fit under the laptop to keep it cool. $14 on Amazon

Maybe this?

Aluminum does a great job exchanging heat. If you could find a big enough chunk, you could just set it on that but that would only be effective if the bottom of your laptop was getting hot.

u/myd3boro · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

I bought this one for the Lenovo Y540. You can choose where to place the fans, so it can be more effective (if placed properly) than normal cooling pads. Some people have also swapped the fans that came with it with Noctua fans lol.

I misread what your dealing with. I have a laptop cooling pad underneath the console and two small computer usb fans on top. They both are blowing air into the vents very gently so the exhaust blower in the back doesnt get damaged. Ill upload a pic when i get a chance.

u/_McCoy · 2 pointsr/Alienware

Phew, okay, i just wanted to make sure

It's really not something i can hear on my laptop unless i have my ear pressed against the keyboard or bottom of the laptop, so i'm not worried about it if it's normal!

I repasted mine with Thermal Grizzly right when i got it. I also bought these from amazon to give more room for cooling!

u/MonkeyDFreecs · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

You're gonna need a cooling pad that has fans far up back so the air flow can effectively get into it's ventilation. Even if it doesn't cool that well a cooling pad is nice to have around for when you want to use a laptop on your lap while also elevating or on your desk elevated with something underneath it that can allow air to travel through it's bottom and have heat disperse among the surface quicker even when off. You're probably going to need a pad like these

https://www.amazon.com/Cooling-VOXON-Notebook-Suitable-Laptops/dp/B07QTZQSRT/ref=sr_1_35?keywords=havit+cooling+pad&qid=1573190751&sr=8-35

As the others have said not only should you undervolt it but you should also repaste it. That combined should knock off at least 20 degrees Celsius especially if you use liquid metal paste.

u/glymao · 1 pointr/laptops

I think I got this.

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-Ultra-Slim-R9-NBC-XSLI-GP/dp/B00EVWE5JK

I am currently using the more standard one from Cooler Master and it works great. However, my laptop emits heat solely from the bottom panel (100% efficiency) so you should check your laptop's vent placement.

u/Mysterius · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

What do you use for your desk cooling pad?

As for the Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim, it was one of the products I considered, but I decided to pass on it due to the fan issue you described, as well as the reported cable issues (people breaking it or hurting themselves on the pass-through connector's exposed metal edges).

I also considered the Thermaltake Massive23 LX ($24.99 @ Amazon or Newegg), but I wanted something smaller and more portable.

I ultimately settled on the Cooler Master NotePal X-Lite II ($15.99 @ Amazon) which has a removable mini USB cable (so I can replace it if it breaks), a two port USB 2.0 hub, and fan speed control. It's just the right size (330 x 251.2 x 28.2 mm) for a 14-inch laptop or a smaller 15-inch laptop (such as the new XPS 15 9550), but larger laptops may have to look elsewhere.

u/N1ghtshine · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

Yeah, open it up, clean the radiator and fan exhaust. A note about cooling mats/pads/things the ones you put your laptop on only work well if you have a bottom exhaust or intake. If you have a side intake/exhaust get something similar to this

u/dannycalamity · 4 pointsr/LifeProTips

Or spend an entire $30 on something like this for the laptop you probably spent $600+ on.

The one I linked I know firsthand works extremely well and the only noise is from the air moving.

u/DonnyChi · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Its a laptop, their cooling systems get built up with dust and also the thermal compounds start to dry up and degrade. Try dusting it out as best you can with some compressed air and invest into a decent cooling pad of some sort. Your laptop overhears? Why are you torturing it with loud fans then?

In all seriousness, get a laptop cooler. I recommend the SF-17 from Cooler Master

I have the SF-19 myself and it works great although its a little big and can be really loud at full speed. The SF-17 or even the SF-15 would suit you fine.

I had issues with games and my laptop shutting off on hot days, this reduced the GPU temperatures from 80-85C (around the temp they shutoff) to around 70C usually. I see around a 10C drop which helps. (I think most of the heat loss is from the fact that it has an aluminum base that acts as a heatsink).

I have an awful Dell Studio XPS 16.

It overheats just by idling. Why? Because it only has one fan that is barely more than an inch wide and the exhaust vent is covered by the screen when you open it.

I picked an Antec Cooling Pad mostly because it was the only one designed for over 15" laptops at Staples when i was there. However it barely fits my laptop.

Still works well however, I have had very little heating problems since.

u/tvtb · 1 pointr/mac

> Everything is working other than the mono.

I'm assuming mono means monitor. So the screen doesn't work.

Let me introduce you to clamshell mode. Lets you use your Mac with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse while it's plugged in with the lid shut. So it's a desktop basically.

I've been using an old 13" Macbook as my HTPC for several years now since the screen died. I even installed Mac OS X Server and have it running VPN and Plex servers. It sits under my TV and sips power and provides services and occasionally plays something on my TV.

My piece of advice about clamshell mode: realize that the CPU/GPU fans partially suck air in through the gaps in the keyboard, so having the lid shut will lower cooling performance. I had issues with CPU throttling in my early days. This became a non-issue as soon as I got a laptop cooler, something like this that sits under it. So get one of those.

  1. Are they worth it?
  2. Any particular model or brand that stands out or are they all quite similar in performance?

Another option is I could sell him my older gaming PC but I cant think on a fair price for both of us as on paper the specs are very close, but in reality with the cooling problems the laptop has the desktop preforms much better. Too expensive and it is not a worth wile upgrade, too cheap and I'm losing out.
