So my suggestions: I've linked the things I use, but they're just suggestions.

  • Lighting: Philips hue. This is because you don't want to wire up any new light switches. If you get a starter pack like this one it comes with a light switch you can place on the wall with double sided tape. You just have to teach the people in your house not to use the old switch anymore. In the case of kids rooms, the switch actually pops out of the holder and you could put it on their nightstand or whatnot so they can turn the lights on if they need to. The stand alone accent lights they have are really good as well, I have a few behind my TV that make the room pop somewhat.
  • Zwave door / window sensors. With the dongle these are more useful then you'd think. If you have these and hue bulbs you could have hall lights turn on at like 10% brightness at night so you can see if you need to get up at night. I use them for my back patio so when I take the dogs out at night the lights automatically turn on, then turn off 15 min later on their own. If you're new to Zwave remember that these sensors do not repeat the signal. In your case since you don't want wire in powered devices you would need to get some repeaters to make sure you have enough signal strength or you won't receive events.
  • Smart plugs: Weemo are good, but if you don't want to have a whole bunch of different types of devices, zwave would work just as well and it would also help with your signal strength. I actuallly use both in my setup to control things like air-purifiers and I have a few that report how much energy they use so I can automate things like when the dishwasher is running or laundry is done.
  • Thermostat: I'm not sure if I can help you with that. I use a Nest for my whole house, but sounds like your setup may be different. There are plenty of good zwave thermostats out there you could hook up to this setup tho.

u/Viper999DC · 2 pointsr/Hue

Hue sells many different configurations of the starter kit, with different amounts and types of bulbs. The cheaper one likely has fewed bulbs, and probably only white bulbs. Older kits can also be cheaper. My opinion is that if you're going to get smart bulbs that don't do color, then you're better of with smart switches. The Hue "white" bulbs are a really ugly yellow that I can't stand. White Ambiance is a nice middle ground, at half the cost of the color bulbs, while giving you full control over the "warmth" spectrum. So you can change your lighting to match the time of day, for instance.

This is the cheapest kit I see on Amazon.com. It's basically the cost of the bridge with 2 white bulbs. Then you have the non-refurb for slightly more. This one is still white bulbs, but now you have 4. This one is like the first kit, but with a dimmer switch. I recommend dimmer switches, as otherwise guests will use the wall switch, disabling your smart bulbs. Then you start getting into the white ambiance kits, this one with a dimmer and 2 bulbs. Finally the color bulb kits will be the most expensive.

So, what's right for you? Depends on what you want. Usually you want to buy the starter kit that has a "free bridge". Use the following price chart to determine the value of your kit:

  • White bulb: $15 ea.
  • White Ambiance bulb: $25 ea.
  • White & Color Abiance bulb: $50 ea.
  • Dimmer switch: $20 ea.
  • Motion Sensor: $40 ea.

If the kit costs the value of it's contents or less, it's worthwhile. If it costs more than that, you're paying for the bridge. Usually the cheaper kits will have you paying more for the bridge. By the time you get into the 4-color-pack range they're giving you a credit.

Now, all that said, if your concern is cheap DO NOT BUY INTO HUE! It's extremely expensive, probably the priciest smart bulb. Ikea Tradfri and LiFX both have cheaper options that are similar in quality. Or if you really want cheap, go with Sengled. Hue is the premium option.

Basics

You should really consider a better HUB/products if you want this level of automation. You are going to want an offline hub such as Vera or Homeseer (what I use). Homeseer I know will interface with the echo Vera should. Hubs like wink/SmartThings end up not working when...

  1. Your router doesn't work
  2. Your ISP's connection drops
  3. Hub's service provider (AWS most likely) goes down
  4. Hub cloud service doesn't work or needs maintenance
  5. Random outages/problems

Similarly, you should NOT get a nest (or EcoBee). I have a nest and while I love the design it is fickle. I would instead recommend a z-wave thermostat. With a z-wave thermostat you can do almost everything nest can (no auto scheduling). Already Purchased

You should seriously consider a different HUB

    Dimmers and Wall Switches

Here is a good place to start. Lutron dimmers are fantastics although they can be a bit pricy (I don't think you mentioned a budget...). Other options include the GE 12724 for dimming if you want to go z-wave over Lutron. And, the GE 12722 for regular on/off. Or Homeseer is releasing new switches soon that look fantastic (Also z-wave)!

    Here's some more info. 1 2 3 4

    Garage Opener

    Chamberlain is great!

    Security

If you cannot change/return your system that fine but I would recommend a DSC power series system as they almost universally integrate with automation systems Homeseer has a plugin as does Vera.

    Audio

Sonos is fine. It can be controlled via Homeseer/Vera (Think announcements). Or you can get an Echo Dot and connect it to the sonos connect via an audio cable. GET a WHA controller (Check the Outdoor speaker section for recommendations)

    Front Door Cam/Doorbell

Either Doorbird a doorbell and camera (expensive) or a normal doorbell with an IP camera with motion record. The integrated solution is better but of course more expensive. If you end up with IP cameras you should consider Hikvison they seem to make the best cameras for the money.

    Outdoor Light

Just install the smart switch of your choice.

    Fan's

Not sure sorry. :-( GE has a fan controlling switch but I doubt it would work as you mention remotes...

    Under Cabinet Lighting

Hue lightstips, Aeon lightstrips or a WIFI / Z-wave LED controller with regular strips. (Will edit later with links)

    Outdoor Speakers

The Daytons are fine you could also go with Yamaha NS-AW150. For integration you could connect them to the MONOPRICE 6 Zone Controller and AMP. You could also connect the Sonos CONNECT to the monopice and have outdoor audio + sonos audio and send audio to any other zones you have!

PM me or comment if you need any more info :-)

*Will edit and add more info when I get to a keyboard.

I’ve only ever grown with artificial lights (unique living situation) so here’s some I can personally vouch for and recommend.

Sansi bulbs. I have the 24W model (fits in any standard desk lamp) and the 15W lights. These have special lenses that focus the beam very strongly in one spot, like a spotlight so it can be raised pretty high and cover a large-ish area. Don’t underestimate these, I put a plant too close to center and it turned jet black in 2 days. He bounced back just fine but these are definitely strong.

Strip lights. I’ve since upgraded my Sansi’s to these with a dedicated shelf. These aren’t as strong, I talked to a user on r/Succulents that reported haw etiolation 9 inches away from the light. However, once she lowered it to 5 inches they said they get amazing stress coloration. To put it in perspective, they said they had a Black Prince that’s always been green but has since gone black like the plant’s supposed to be.
As a bonus, here are the shelves I use, they are exactly the same dimensions as the lights.

Both are very capable depending on your needs.

Edit 11/26/19: Sooo, the strip lights have shot up to $200 for some reason. When I linked them, they were only $49. It’s either a stock issue or the new price, not sure.

That one would look better but it still has UV so it still is a safety risk.

I don’t know what brand of bulbs I use but I’ve used bulbs similar to these with great success

https://www.amazon.com/LOHAS-150W-200W-Incandescent-Equivalent-Not-Dimmable/dp/B07D8VP91V

Most normal led bulbs for human use will work for plants too.

The only difference is that the spectrum of grow lights is distorted in an attempt to be more efficient but the science behind that is not good.

To get technical. The main light absorbing molecule in plants is chlorophyll which absorbs red and blue light really well. These companies tune their grow lights to that to avoid wasting energy on light that the plan won’t consume as easily. But... there are other light absorbing molecules in plants as well and it looks like broad spectrum white light has benefits for overall plant health.

Edit: I don’t want to imply that those purple lights don’t work. I have/use a few different brands of them just not in a living space. I have also noticed improvements in plant health once I started supplementing them with white light.

Here is a thread from a different gardening sub with some good info

Anything Z-Wave and almost anything Zigbee will work with a SmartThings hub.

I have gone with a handful of Z-Wave switches. One switch can operate multiple light bulbs, and are still usable as a switch.

I think the general consensus is to go with switches instead of bulbs, for cheaper cost, and easier for anyone other than you to operate, like guests. Unless you are renting, or want the color change ability.

I have been eyeing the Sylvania Smart + (Formerly Osram Lightify) bulbs for some color changing bulbs that work with SmartThings.

I don't have one, but many people love their Phillips hue. I think you can get basic functionality through the Zigbee support, without the Phillips Hub, but if you want the best experience the hub is better. Still integrates well with SmartThings.

LIFX also get good reviews and works with SmartThings.

u/Laockey35 · 1 pointr/smarthome

Whats your budget for something like this cheapest would be getting TP Link light switches (do not require any hub at all just an app on your phone) and a few of these. however with teh GE light bulbs you will need a hub. best/cheapest in my opinon is the wink hub. so all together lets say 4 light bulbs (they last for YEARS!) and one light switch and then the hub your looking at about 140 all in. ideally you would want Echo because that gives you the ability to controls your lights without opening an app every time you want your lights to turn on and off. if you decided to go with echo you can get a dot for $50 but you would want a speaker hooked up to it because it sounds like a cell phone speaker without it. but if you want to just control your lights with it you wont need a speaker it just gives you better sound for things like music, weather, and news.

Edit: for a thremostat HANDS DOWN BEST ONE OUT THERE is the Ecobee3 Sleek, Stylish and best functionality in my opinon. thatll run you about 250 though

u/myfrstbkt · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Here's the basic parts list to build a bucket like this:

  • 2x 5 Gal buckets with lids (one for res, one for light top.) More buckets for spacers. (check your home improvement store of choice.)
  • A big roll of black duct tape. This
  • A roll of FlexFix tape. This
  • A couple of space blankets. This
  • A can of 3M spray adhesive. This is the good stuff
  • 5x light sockets with plug ends. These
  • 5x Philips SlimStyle LED "75w" 2700k. These
  • Some heatshrink tubing. Looks good
  • Some lamp cord and hookup wire. This, And This
  • A roll of flux/rosin core solder. Your Choice, this looks okay
  • An airpump. This one is awesome, This will do
  • Some airstones. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JLA83C/)
  • A distribution manifold. At least a 3 way
  • Some air lines. This, Or This
  • A length of 3/4" pvc pipe and a plug (check your home improvement store of choice).
  • A water dripper system. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JAY6E/)
  • Either a netpot and a bucket lid with a hole cut in it OR a premade netpot/bucket lid. This if you want to save some work
  • Some PC fans. [These are nice and cheap] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NTUJZ36/)
  • A PSU to run the fans and LED strip side lights you might add on spacers. This. It's 80+ at least. I had a few extra PSUs around. I wouldn't use one that isn't at least 80+ since it will be running 24/7.

Lots of this stuff can be had cheaper at a home improvement or pet store. Check around. You'll need a soldering iron (I like my adjustable 40w), a drill and drill bits up to 3/4" (I like step bits for work on plastic), a heatgun or lighter to shrink that heatshrink tubing. An infrared thermometer is nice to have and can tell you the temp of your nutrients, the plant itself, your lights, etc...Just make sure to calibrate it first, all the cheap ones are inaccurate by at least a few degrees.
u/0ju3wb2zvk · 2 pointsr/Hydroponics

I'm currently using these light bulbs half-and-half with warm whites and daylights. I went with these for exactly the same reasons you mentioned; less work and money. I wired up a bunch of normal light bulb sockets like a giant Christmas light. I feel like it wasn't much less work compared to setting up LED COBs with COB holders like in this guide.

One problem I have with this setup is the lack of adequate heat sinks. These bulbs heat up more than I'm comfortable with, and I can't do much about it. I mean it should be fine, since it's Philips and it's meant to be on all day as normal household lights, but it melts Mylar on contact and I don't like that. I would really like to stick a huge chunk of aluminum on it. It's just a matter of preference, though. You might not mind it at all since you are using something way hotter than LED light bulbs.

One nice thing about LED light bulbs compared to CFL other than the higher efficiency is that the lighting globe part isn't hot at all, so the leaves can be literally right on it and be happy (as long as they don't touch the hot part right behind the frosty globe and get fried instantly).

u/lightknight7777 · -1 pointsr/todayilearned

It would be a terrible idea to buy a $20 LED. Even if it lasts 20 years they still get dimmer over time. The last few years would be a light bulb that is still bright enough to be considered "functional" but clearly one that should be replaced. So don't consider buying a bulb for that price.

I've just gone with discounted CFLs which meant I paid less than $2/bulb, 8 of which qualify as being on for most of the time. The energy savings in those paid for the purchase of all bulbs in the house by the third year. Hopefully by the time I have to replace them the LEDs will be that cheap on average. Though, right now it looks like I can get them for around $2/bulb.

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-461129-Equivalent-White-16-Pack/dp/B01CAL1EMY/ref=lp_2314207011_1_2_m?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1478178308&sr=1-2

So if I didn't already have efficient bulbs, that wouldn't be a bad way to go now. But for the moment I'm saving, like you said, a small amount each year already with already-paid for bulbs. All of these cost designs only deal with switching from the old type of bulbs which is definitely worth it at this point even if it's a mild difference.

u/letsmaketacos · 1 pointr/homeassistant

Great work! I was a little surprised that Wink isn't on there. For $35 the 1st gen hub is a great entry point for beginners as a Zigbee/Z-Wave radio. I used Wink's built in automations (Robots) to get started while getting HA up and running. It's easy to turn Wink into a "dumb" hub once you get HA all figured out, then you can look into dedicated radios for HA to take Wink out of the picture completely. Wink can be a little slow at times, but it is a great low cost entry point.

You also might want to add Sengled Element bulbs and Sylvania Smart+ color bulb, they are inexpensive and work extremely well!

u/m1stertim · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Not saying you're wrong for liking them, but that's a serious downgrade in brightness over your fluorescent fixtures.

A 4' fluorescent bulb (new, obviously) will put out about 3000 lumens, and you had 12 of them, so 36klumens.

Those fixtures don't state how many lumens they put out, but based on an average cheap LED l/w efficiency, 1000 is a safe bet. So you added 11klumens.

Instead, take these lights, which put out 3700 lumens. 3 of them put out the same as 11 of your fixtures, and cheaper too. (they're $40 at costco). $0.02/lumen for your CEs versus $0.015/lumen for these, or $0.011/lumen if you get them at costco.

Plus you save on wiring and boxes by more than halving the number of fixtures you need. Not that those blue boxes are expensive, haha.

u/PM_ME_UR_PLANTS · 1 pointr/succulents

If you combine a magenta bulb with a "daylight" bulb like this (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-455717-Equivalent-Daylight-4-Pack/dp/B00YEMKJE2), it should look pretty normal. You can also skip the magenta entirely in place of daylight bulbs. LED is a little more power efficient, a little cooler, and handles power cycling better (the last being the greatest advantage IMO). However, power cycling isn't a huge deal for grow lights, so both fluorescent and LED work pretty well right now, and fluorescent does have a lower initial cost.

u/Astrali3 · 2 pointsr/succulents

I typically advise people to avoid those cheap LEDs because they're typically...trash. I've used one and while it certainly did slow the rate of etiolation, the succs did etiolate.

I use a Viparspectra 300w, but that is for full indoor all-year-round growth. A couple of T5 or T8 fluorescents would probably be best for you, to be honest, if you can attach them to some shelving. Something like these, that are listed above, should work.

u/jzlas · 2 pointsr/ReverseEngineering

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to reverse engineer an IoT device which is controlled via an iPhone app. The device in question is this LED Strip Controller which is controlled by an app called Magic Home.

I've set up Charles Proxy with SSL inspection and it works fine for most internet traffic but it does not capture or show the local traffic between the app and the controller. This is true for all local traffic to other IoT devices that are controlled via other apps or via HomeKit. If I make a request through Safari to a local IP, even on a different port than 80, I can see that traffic. Is there a way to monitor the app's traffic through Charles proxy or proxying in general?

The other approach that I was thinking about was monitoring the traffic that the controller receives. I have a Unifi network (USG, Switch and one AP) but I have no idea how to do something like that. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

u/arynx · 1 pointr/DIY

Highly recommend Phillip's Hue products, they're great and the API is pretty neat to work with. They have a light strip which integrates perfectly.

u/Bostonlbi · 6 pointsr/HomeKit

I've got a pretty fun set up in my Sunroom

Lights: some basic string lights, and a couple Ikea MAGNARP lamps plugged into some iHome Smart Plugs, along with Hue Full color bulbs in the ceiling with a Hue Dimmer Switch

The dimmer switch can not control anything but Phillips Hue bulbs but I wanted to use it to set a scene that turned on the string lights and lamps so I set the second press of the dimmer switch to turn the hue lights to a 1% brightness.
From within the Elgato Eve App I set an automation triggered by the Hue lights being set to 1% that turns the lamps and string lights on.

Fans:

It can get pretty hot in the sunroom in the summer with a lot of activity from booth the people and the cat in the house. So I set up a system with Eve Room Sensor, Eve Door Sensor (used on windows) and iHome Smart Plugs to automate 2 fans set up in windows on opposite sides of the room. The Room sensor tracks the air quality and if it is low the fans will kick on, as long as the windows are open, (tracked by door sensor)
when the quality is good again, the fans turn off automatically, and they don't turn on while the string lights are on, since they are kinda loud.

Unfortunately our AC unit has a NEMA 6-15P plug so its not compatible with HomeKit.

u/fireworks_in_the_fog · 1 pointr/buildapc

Unfortunately not. The one I purchased only emits green but the kind you are looking for allows multiple colors.

The power supply cable has several branching inputs for attaching lights or fans. They're pretty long so you shouldn't feel limited on placement or anything. I waited to install mine after hooking up all the major components, but that's up to you! Best of luck on your build dude!

My guess is that the strips you already have are dimmable. Every controller I've seen accomplishes dimming by varying a PWM duty cycle (switching things off/on really fast), which should be compatible with any strip. Probably only need to replace the controller.

Controller probably doesn't matter too much. There are cheap Wifi ones all over the place that probably work pretty well. Home Assistant is compatible with most of the ones you'll find. I've had good luck with this one.

Which strips you buy probably does matter if you plan to have them on a lot of the time. LED strips vary in quality by:

  1. Longevity. Cheap ones are bad at dissipating heat and will lose brightness over time as the LEDs give out. This really only matters if you plan to use them in a way that'll cause them to run hot.
  2. Color consistency. Colors can vary from batch to batch unless the manufacturer is careful about it.
  3. Brightness. Cheapo light strips tend to not be as bright as expensive ones.

If you're optimizing for quality without much consideration for price, Hue is probably the way to go.
u/waterboysh · 1 pointr/Hue

I don't have any Hue lights yet, but am starting to look.

How good are these "bundle offers" on the official Hue site? $45 for 3 white ambiance lights and $64 for 6 plain white dimmable bulbs.

Since we're so close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I'm considering going ahead and getting the starter kit that's on sale and then just holding off to see what I can get in about a month for cheaper.

The main reason I'm starting to look at smart bulbs (vs switches) is I suffer from migraines often, and I prefer warmer color whites and my wife prefers the cooler whites because it looks more natural. With the white ambiance bulbs I think we can both be happy.

https://www.amazon.com/Feit-917972-Electric-Utility-Light/dp/B00LFAY5SM

Pretty sure this is the one I bought, though I don't think I paid that $50 price tag.

My garage is 21x21 or so, and one works well for the half gym, if I used the entire garage, two would suffice in my opinion. They are SUPER bright.

u/tbrozovich · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Awesome. Okay so just to clarify (sorry), I know I could use the hand controller provided with these lights, but if I got the H801 controller, I could change the lights with an app on my phone for now. Is this correct? Then going forward I could get this controller to hook up to Smartthings.

I have 3 zones total, the wall art, and 2 sets of cabinets I would want to light. Would I need 3 of these controllers, one for each run of LED lights? And then I would need to use the app to turn on each run individually?

If you recommend a different H801 controller would you be able to link that to me?

Thanks again for your time.

Edit: Thoughts on this controller?

u/tomgabriele · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

> I would propose that any fixture you purchase be able to fit the Philips Hue bulbs. You can set them to one color out of 16 million.

I disagree. In addition to being overpriced, they are overkill. Hue bulbs may be capable of 16 million colors, but you would never want 15.8 million of those for a bathroom.

If OP wants smart bulbs, something like these $15 tunable white bulbs will serve them better. Cheaper, not proprietary hub, and can still be set to any color you'd reasonably want.

There are also no-hub-required wifi tunable bulbs, but I don't have experience with them.

But really, OP should just buy basic 2700-3000k led bulbs and not worry about being able to customize the exact hue of light.

u/gorgewall · 1 pointr/politics

The only one I can get to without stepping on a ladder or undoing some covers has a GE logo and no other identification, but I haven't changed my home's CFLs for years so I really couldn't say. It's a short, helical 15Ws if that's worth anything, but the others are various wattages and sizes. I've only got one overhead fixture in the house with bulbs that come on dim and they look like floodlights, but are CFL on the inside.

That said, I had to get some obnoxiously bright LEDs for my grandmother just last week and I was very impressed at how blinding they could be.

u/SuperAngryGuy · 5 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

!00 watts per square foot is more appropriate for CFLs that radiate light in all directions, unlike LEDs that radiate in a single direction with these types of bulbs, and are not as electrically efficient as modern LED light bulbs.

These bulbs are pretty inefficient, though, at 85 lumens per watt so I would not use them. There are bulbs that give >110 or so lumens per watt.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YEMKJE2

32 gallon brute is 2.84 square feet.

These are 1200 lumen bulbs you linked to. Eight of them gives 9600 lumens. 9600 / 2.84 = 3380 lumens per square feet. That's close to where we want for LEDs that broadcast in a single direction to be but the distance from the light sources plays a bigger role in brute Space Buckets. That's why we want to use lux meters for verifying light levels at plant canopy level.

Eight 1600 lumen bulbs will give you about 4500 lumens per square foot which will perform better.

Removing the cover will give roughly a 10% greater efficiency if not more particularly over longer distances since the cover creates a wider beam angle. But you have to understand the safety of removing the cover which I am going to keep mentioning so we have no injured bucketeers:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SpaceBuckets/comments/6fdmsn/dismantled_led_globes/dihxuha/

Here are some calculators that people should play with:

http://dev.edman007.com/~edman007/pub/par-dli-cal.html (this appears to be for a CRI of 100 looking at the code so may be about 20% low for a cri 80 light source found in common LED bulbs. The wavelength measurements for color LEDs appears dead on. BOOK MARK THIS PAGE!)

TL;DR use more efficient bulbs and read the safety disclaimer if removing the covers.

edit: and just get the UFO for a brute

u/Silidistani · 5 pointsr/RoomPorn

The windows have a IR reduction film on them which reduces 97% of the infrared light coming through... so the evening sun setting over the water doesn't bake the room.

They are also double-paned, and the inner pane is an ElectroChromic layer, which can provide rapid visible-light tint at the push of a button - perfect for when its's time for sleep or the sun is just too bright the next morning after a night at the bars.

But why use buttons? An Amazon Echo Dot built into a nook in the wall can communicate with a SmartThings hub in the small hand-carved-wood electronics cabinet (out of frame here) and not only activate the EC windows but also the motorized track on the wooden shutters outside - for those times when you do want total privacy. A simple voice command makes it happen. It even anticipates your needs with daily schedule settings so the soft morning light can wake you up by retracting the shutters and setting the EC glass to transparent each morning at dawn. A Nest thermostat keeps everything balmy or cozy depending on the time of day, or day of the week.

While you're in the bath, of course, the Dot will play your current Audible book from your Kindle collection over the built-in-ceiling speakers using its Bluetooth radio, or switch to that classical Pandora channel you've been cultivating for years when you're tired of the book and just want to rest.

Finally, the two small lights in the alcoves in the rear wall are actually multi-colored and dimmable wifi-connected LEDs, so they can flash various colors when different events happen, such as the local fruit-&-vegetable vendor bringing your semi-weekly order to your gate downstairs or getting a phone call from a particular person in your favorites list.

You live a comfortable life.

u/relativityboy · 1 pointr/smarthome

Already good comments here, but TBF the best remote things are outlets and wall switches. That way if/when you hit a switch to turn something off the 'old' way it will still respond if you want it on.

Also, you need a hub. Smartthings or Wink.
The rest are worthless (Hue hub and all the other hubs). IMO Philips Hue is lame. If you want colored bulbs go get Sylvania lightify (cheaper, less crap in your house since it doesn't need its own hub).

Ideal starter setup would be an echo dot $50, a hub $100, two wall switches ($30ea) (for unswitched outlets) and a couple wall paddle switches ($30ea). That much hardware would set you back about $270, but would add a fair bit of fun and convenience.

Hi there! Adjustable temperature is one thing I drool over with the hue system (yeah, I'm weird lol). This is the minimum you would need to see the CT range of the hue ambiance bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Dimmable-Compatible-HomeKit-Assistant/dp/B01N4OMRJ9/

However, you only get 4 presets vs the entire range of color temps and the system by itself is not "smart" or compatible with your phone. It is however able to be added to a full system with hue bridge such as...

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Starter-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01F6T4R80/
Which comes with everything you need to get started and connect your phone to the system. This setup will allow you to play with every single variation of CT for the hue ambiance bulbs via your smartphone!

The first option is the most affordable, however you only get 4 preconfigured non adjustable settings, vs the second is probably your best bet for a smart phone compatible system that gives you 'infinite' adjustability. If you don't care about smartphone/smarthome integration, look into Philips Sceneswitch bulbs! I have a bunch of them in some multi bulb fixtures I didn't want to spend the money for ambiance bulbs and dimmer switches lol.

u/MrHaVoC805 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

There's tons of cheaper stuff out there, but you'd have to be flexible on your must haves.

No other lock that I know of except the August can be accessed with time sensitive or love time codes. The Schlage and Kwikset models can have codes input but they'd have to be deleted later manually. Schlage sense locks can be accessed through their app to delete codes or deactivate them remotely, but that app costs $5 a month so the August would be cheaper in the long run as there isn't a fee.

You can get a bunch of Cree LEDs that connect to WiFi and are controlled with Alexa natively, they're pretty cheap comparatively at $14. Though you'll lose your other must of light temperature colors changing.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01701DKVM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_RMV7ybKWDSJPA

You could save a couple bucks using Osram Lightify bulbs:

u/skaag · 1 pointr/Parenting

For the main living areas (living room and dining room) I bought Philips Hue lights, with their 4 mode "puck" switch. Those are the products I purchased:

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-464503-Generation-Richer-Android/dp/B01KJYSOHM/
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-432690-Equivalent-Single-Light/dp/B00HNLQQ7K/
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-452532-Hue-Tap-Switch/dp/B00ME9CD28/

Here's how I configured my tap switch:

Mode 1: Everything is on, full brightness (but warm light)
Mode 2: Sunset mode, orange/reddish
Mode 3: Romance mode (think red light district)
Mode 4: Everything off

In her bedroom the main light is a warm white, but after 6pm we have two Ikea lamps with light bulbs from https://www.lowbluelights.com (which I received from a friend a while ago). I'm about to switch the bathroom light as well with the 2nd Hue light I linked to above, because now that the sun sets earlier in the day, I want her bath time to also be lit in sunset mode.

u/AMAbutTHAT · 13 pointsr/amazonecho

LIFX smart light bulb. Sounds like you want a warm light. I have one. It can get really bright so I have to set mine to 30% brightness. No hub required and Alexa compatible. I rarely use it with Alexa, though. I set mine using the LIFX app based on sunrise/sunset. Alexa doesn’t have this as a routine setting yet.

LIFX Mini White (A19) Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb, Dimmable, Warm White, No Hub Required, Works with Alexa, Apple HomeKit and the Google Assistant

u/johnypilgrim · 2 pointsr/obs

High lumen LED light bulbs like these, or building your own key light with LED strips is the way to go.

They all run extremely cool. When using bulbs, you'll want something like a positional desk lamp so you can spotlight areas that might have shadows and blast them out of existence.

That's the super budget way to go.

u/TheCowardlyFrench · 1 pointr/unpopularopinion

This is the one I use. It's a bit pricey, but absolutely worth it. Especially if you have an amazon echo and you can connect your lights to your smart home. You can just tell it to turn lights on or off, color, brightness, etc.

Totally not needed however for the day night cycle.

Just need to connect the bulbs to your wifi and your phone app.

u/phillysdon04 · 1 pointr/googlehome

I have the 1st generation color Lifx bulbs which doesn't require a hub & the Philips Hue white which requires a hub. The Lifx bulbs are pretty neat because without needing the hub, it's 1 less thing to plug in but it's more expensive. I only used the colors for the Lifx bulbs when I first got it, so I ended up switching to the Philips Hue white bulbs. On Amazon 1 white Lifx bulbs costs $24.99 while 4 white Philips Hue bulbs costs $49.99. They both work great with the Google Home, so it's all about your personal preference.

u/enkafan · 2 pointsr/Hue

This is exactly what you need but it looks like Phillips isn't selling it anymore - Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit (2 A19 Bulbs, 1 Bridge, and 1 Dimmer Switch).

The good news is if you are willing to roll the dice on a refurbished set you can get it for $80.

u/Infini-Bus · 3 pointsr/LSD

Amazon has both - LIFX and Philips Hue

I know the Hue bulbs require a "hub" to connect to a router, but LIFX don't. I also see these at like Best Buy and Home Depot.

My east facing widow wasn't cutting it for my ever expanding plant collection. Decided to introduce some artificial light to help them get through the winter. Probably isn't helping much since I don't really know what I'm doing but it feels like it is doing something. Went with these light bulbs over the pinkish LED grow lights for aesthetic reasons. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

u/zetsui · 1 pointr/led

Aren't SOME LEDs focused (ie a painting at a display/art gallery)? Like the one with the beam angles while others are omnidirectional?

Also somethign really weird, I bought the Philips slims
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I134ORI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JM72W58/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the 2x450lum are DEFINITELY brighter than the 1 900. Why is this? I feel like lum ratings on the LEDs are VERY understated. Compared to my CLFs 900 lum CLF is the same brightness as the 450lum Philips

Who would've guessed low energy lightbulbs save money.

Nevermind, the article is literally just a paragraph about a single brand of lightbulbs OP is trying to get you to buy.

But, if you're interested, here's the Non-Referral link to the lightbulbs in question:

u/buckyboo22 · 1 pointr/reloading

I'm in the process of wrapping up my new reloading bench. I'm using this kit from Amazon. If you flip through the user-submitted photos you can see a few people who are reloading with it, as well as all sorts of different ideas for configurations.

Given my space constraints I made mine 6x2'. Conveniently that means one 4x8' sheet of plywood gave me enough for two shelves plus two smaller middle shelves. It took me about an hour to cut the wood and put together the workbench. I had Home Depot cut the plywood for me but cut all the 2x4s myself. Total cost for the kit, all the wood, pegboard, some matte poly, and a paint brush is right around $200.

My upper shelves aren't done yet but will be 4' wide to support a nice big piece of white pegboard. I've ordered an LED shop light for lighting.

Even though I just have the lower part done it's awesome. Way way way sturdier than the crappy-ass "workbench" I had from Harbor Freight before.

I'll post pictures once the bench is done and the 550B is mounted to it, likely Saturday.

So to understand, I would be best off getting this:

And then supplementing it with this and any other Hue products I decide to add?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M9AU8MB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Looks as though the hub connects to my router so I'm assuming I can identify lights individually in order to have them spread around the house and do different things?

My $.02: These zigbee bulbs are decent. I've used them with ST and HA. I wish the dimmer worked better at low levels, but they're still quite good. Without the hub, they come in at under $10/bulb. (https://www.amazon.com/Element-Classic-Sengled-SmartThings-Assistant/dp/B072M5RT6L)

If you have a spare 2.5" drive bay in your case's front panel, check out the NZXT Hue+. It's a comprehensive controller/management system for all your RGB needs. If you need extra strips, it can be slightly pricey (check Amazon), but the cost can be well worth it, from what I've seen.

If you want price tracking, this page on CamelCamelCamel should have you covered, for Amazon USA, anyway. Here's price tracking for the extension kit, too.

All the lights used a part of a Philips Hue system. There is a bulb in the lamp, two bloom lights for the wall, and a Hue Lightstrip inside the PC. They are controllable from my phone/pc. They are RGB, and the Hue system allows for some pretty fun colors!

I have the v2 hub and had a ton of issues with these bulbs. Apparently if they were manufactured prior to a certain date then they need a firmware update to work with the SmartThings hubs. To do the firmware update you need the Sylvania hub. I bought 15 of them from Lowes and only 2 worked out of the box. Rather than buy the hub to update them, I just returned them and bought the GE Link and Cree Connected bulbs from Amazon and they worked perfectly.

Unless you have material in your case that would be UV reflective, I'd suggest going with a strip of RGB lights instead. Something like the NZXT HUE+ would work really well. This way, you won't have to decide between a color... you can have them all!

Also, if you really like the UV color, you can use a purple or deep blue for the same effect (minus the glowy parts).

I have a wide variety of succulents and I'm worried about how to make sure they get the right amount of light. I have IDs for about 2/3rds of my 50 plants. My main worry is my split rock collection and my lithops since they're my favorites, but I really want everyone to make it through winter. Should I get everyone ID'd and try to find more specific instructions?

We're in the middle of moving but don't have a place yet so I'm not sure how much natural light I'll have to work with, especially as it gets colder and keeping blinds/curtains drawn will be necessary. Right now I have a not-very-good temporary purple grow light set up just to try and help them make it through. After we move I'm planning on getting shelving and proper lights.

Based on a recommendation I'm looking at this shelving and these lights. Will those be enough for a wide variety of succulents if they can't get much natural light?

I have it currently setup so that when I get home, the garage door opens (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Iris-Z-Wave-Garage-Door-Controller-Works-with-Iris/50213045) and my interior lights turn on.

To get the lights to work, I have GE Z wave switches (https://www.amazon.com/GE-Wireless-Lighting-Control-12722/dp/B0035YRCR2) and some GE Link LED bulbs (https://www.amazon.com/GE-Wireless-Connected-60-Watt-Equivalent/dp/B00NOL16K0/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1478189524&sr=1-1&keywords=ge+link).

u/74orangebeetle · 1 pointr/led

I've gotten random chinese led's off of ebay. Some are alright, some are not so great. I wouldn't buy a large number of a kind you haven't tried. Walmart started carrying great value brand 40w replacements($5) and 60w replacement (~$7) that I think are decent (and I believe 2700k) and that's what I use in my bedroom at the moment. I got the cheaper non dimmable, and they're better in downward facing lamps (not as good multidirectional) Home depot carries some "philips slim style" (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-433227-Equivalent-SlimStyle-Dimmable/dp/B00I134ORI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1421924669&sr=8-2&keywords=philips+slim+style)

That are dimmable and produce light in all directions that are decent too. Only downside is a very faint buzzing sound (not loud, but it's there) emitted from them.

u/roofuskit · 3 pointsr/homeassistant

To control it with your phone it's going to be a bit of an investment since you need a hub. I would suggest a WiFi bulb. LiFx on the high end or Yeelight on the cheap end. They get pretty inexpensive if you don't need RGB control and just want white light with the ability to dim.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072M5RT6L

I'd only recommend using these on lamps though and just don't use the physical switches on the lamp itself (so the bulbs are always powered and connected) and use automation or voice control to turn them on/off instead.

u/SyntheticBiology · 2 pointsr/maryland

Seriously! They've come down massively in price, they aren't full of mercury like CFLs are, they don't have a CFL's warm-up time, they work with dimmer switches, and they're now significantly pulling ahead of CFLs in terms of energy efficiency.

If you're interested in the color changing feature of the bulbs, take a look at the Osram RGBW bulbs, or the Osram Tunable White bulbs (if you're okay just adjusting color temperature and not getting funky with it).

So, just to clarify: You want to control 16 RGB LED strips individually?

I haven't seen any zwave switches capable of controlling more than two loads at a time.

The only zwave LED strip controller I'm aware of comes from Fibaro. Incidentally, if you're willing to skip RGB and just go with white LED strips, you could control four white strips with a single controller, rather than one RGBW strip.

This LEDENET wifi LED strip controller has also been generating some buzz lately.

Neither of those two options has a manual on/off button.

Frankly, doing individual control of 16 LED strips is going to be expensive. Is there a reason you don't want all 16 LED strips to have the same state?

u/lasermancer · 3 pointsr/news

Do you work in Somalia?

A single LED bulb costs $9. Many electric companies sell them directly for around $3 if you're a customer. In addition, they have a lifespan of 20 years. And they'll save you $25 per year in electricity costs.

It takes 4 months for the $9 LED to pay for itself.

>Heh, that clone is the definition of the word “fried” when used in a cannabis plant context.

I once let a DWC bucket run dry. That was what I'd call "fried"; a plant that was literally coarse and crisp to the touch from a lack of moisture and heat, where the leaves crumble in your hand. This is a severely wilted plant.

>It happens as a result of too much light and no nutrients

In my case that must mean "any light at all". I used the same bulb I use for seedlings: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YEMKJE2 I'm not sure how dimmer I'm supposed to go than that. Is that really too bright?

To be honest I went in fully under the assumption that the plant would end up looking like this before rooting.

Just get normal household bulbs (100w equivalent LEDs) and remove the plastic piece that diffuses the light. Philips is a good brand.

Maybe you can find a couple old reading lamps and screw in a few of those bulbs. If you don't let the plant grow too large before you change the light cycle to 12/12, you can flower a small plant with a few of those bulbs.

There's the problem, 60W LED bulbs are between $6

I've heard good things about the Osram Lightify RGBW bulbs, they're Zigbee so they require a hub but people have reported much more accurate colors than the Hue's.

u/TrentLivingston · 1 pointr/modelmakers

Damn I didn’t realize the 100w bulbs were that bright. Here’s a 1600 liken LED from Amazon.

Cheapest I've found. If you set up a price alert on camelcamelcamel they drop to under $8/bulb with sales.

I've got 4 right now and I've have more but realized I prefer switched over bulbs

>Still a reasonable price tho

I guess, maybe if it goes on sale and you need another mini. Its only a single bulb. The minis were on sale for $30 last holiday so that single bulb could cost $25. What the hell are we supposed to do with a single smart bulb?

Right now on Amazon you can get 4 hubless smart bulbs for $31.

Google pricing really fucking pisses me off given the fact they make billions off user data, the least they could do is subsidize their gadgets.

u/VenomizeGaming · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Don't use CFLs. They are obsolete for growing. The new LED bulbs outperform CFLs (even less watts used and more lumens).

Use 100 watt equivalent ones. They come in various spectrums, as well.

Example: 5000k 100 watt LED

u/mentalsong · 1 pointr/homelab

Nice setup. I like the use of the AC infinity for through-closet ventilation. However, might I suggest a filter for your blue orb of eyesight death?

The ones being sold by Amazon actually are still only $20 but are back-ordered. At least for the GE.

If you want to dim the brightness, they make light blocking stickers.

u/Dean_thedream · 1 pointr/googlehome

I have four of the Sylvania Lightify tunable white light bulbs and the SmartThings hub handles them without an additional hub. I have them in different rooms and 'allowed access' to them in the Google Home app so I can say 'turn off the lights in the living room' and both turn off.

I can also say dim my bedroom light to 5%. You have to pick a percent if you want the lights to dim.

u/fetro15 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I want to get this wifi led controller: XCSOURCE DC 12-24V iOS Android WIFI Remote 5 Channels Controller for RGB LED Strip LD686 https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01AA6221S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IG5IxbNZD317B for my setup. I will be running a strip behind my desk and another one running parallel to my PC tower. What LED strips should I get for it?

u/yParticle · 2 pointsr/iiiiiiitttttttttttt

These overpriced translucent stickers are an easy fix for all kinds of annoying domestic LEDs. It's a silly product, but at least they'll send you a "free" sample for $1, which works out to a lifetime supply in my experience. Amazon link.

u/MrBilbro · 1 pointr/ZReviews

They have little mylar circular stickers that will dim it greatly but will still be visible.

Was thinking of trying these: Light Dims

That way I can still see the light, but it's not blinding.

What is your budget? If you're looking for the top-of-the-line item, this would be it:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-259982-Personal-Lightstrip-Frustration/dp/B00I12XOES/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408976663&sr=8-1&keywords=hue+light+strip

Controllable by your phone with a ton of settings. You can also opt for the bulbs instead of the light strip. Both ways will run you around $200 (includes the wireless module).

Silvania smart+ are $29/bulb.

I added the lights in using these: NZXT Extension Kit, they're 2 LED lights that have adhesive and magnets on the back side, I hooked the up to the NZXT controller and use a software on my PC called CAM to control the lighting.

If you buy the NZXT controller, I believe it is bundled with led strips.

The new White Ambiance bulbs (where you can change the colour temperature) are available to buy in the UK!

Do you recall how many lumens?

EDIT: Nm. Found them. They're rated at the same lumens (800). I might buy one and try them side by side.

I have a lamp in the back of my room here with this bulb to change the colours. Behind the monitor on the left I have this one too.

u/milan616 · 1 pointr/OnHub

I have just two of these bulbs with my OnHub, but I haven't had any disconnect issues. I have noticed occasionally that Google Home will tell me that one of the lights is not connected, but it still turns on/off with it's sibling (a pair for the kitchen).

u/splitplug · 11 pointsr/Hue

I would look into LIFX bulbs for this.

I have the two foot long version of these. Though for some reason when I look them up now it only shows the 8 foot lights.

u/p0tat0s0up · 2 pointsr/Hue

decent deal in the US too. 3 bulbs & a hub for $99

u/ztsuchanek · 2 pointsr/personalfinance

25 euros for one seems insane. This is what LED pricing looks like here in the states, it shouldn’t be THAT far off over there, especially not 10-20x more. $26.01 for a 16 pack of LEDs.

The tech has exploded recently, and is becoming mass produced, so I would recommend checking again at the prices. They may have changed dramatically in a couple of years.

u/Matt3989 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

off topic, but I swear by these for my electronics

u/garfnodie · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

Did a little looking following your idea, I looked for Hue alternatives that work with the smartthings hub, and found this. The bulb may still be a bit expensive at $40USD, but that's $10USD cheaper than the equivalent Hue bulb, and with the Sylvania bulb, I don't need a special hub just for the lights.

u/Starbase00 · 2 pointsr/xboxone

You can try a product called LightDims on Amazon. Here's a direct link: https://www.amazon.com/LightDims-Original-Strength-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B00CLVEQCO/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00CLVEQCO&pd_rd_r=VEMQS4EKGQ45F39GPW3K&pd_rd_w=mUAIJ&pd_rd_wg=DgUWJ&psc=1&refRID=VEMQS4EKGQ45F39GPW3K

They even have circular ones that would likely cover the Xbox button. The curve of the button may make it a bit annoying to stick the LightDim to though.
