Youngling, the force cannot be lost but it can be found.

Kits are the easiest way to go by far but there is not a sub $400 kit that I know of that can reach the North pennies. So if you go with a kit it is not going to be turn-key (you are going to have to modify its reach).

A lot of teams (including some of the ones I work with) really like the OWI-535 as it is cheap and easy to modify. Most of the other team I see at State every year are using VEX creations. And then there is that one robot from that one team, a fully custom 1:1 matching action robotic arm pair.

If you have the time, money, and skill; building one will give you way more options and flexibility when it comes to the competition. If you are building your own based on an arduino control; look into high torque servos, and these (I found them linked off of a video I cannot find at the moment).

And finally I will leave you with this Youtube link to something that was posted over in the student forums.

u/I_want_hard_work · 5 pointsr/robotics

I am an engineering graduate student and I highly recommend this: http://amzn.com/B0017OFRCY

There's no programming to it. It's strictly the hardware of the robotics; gears, electric motors, linkages. I got it specifically because it's straightforward and I had plans to augment it with an Arduino wheeled robot and chase my roommate's ferrets (which I never got around to). It's all hard plastic and metal parts and the grip is pretty decent.

This would work well for you too since it has good instructions. If you can put together a table from IKEA, you can put together this robotic arm. It's also a great price. I see Mindstorms thrown around a lot, and that may work well in this case since he's 5 but I've always found their stuff to be incredibly overpriced (this is coming from someone who loves Legos).

Fair warning, this will give him great insight into the mechanics of how robotic arms work. Side effects may include him shutting himself in his room to work on his "arc reactor".

u/Relenq · 2 pointsr/cats

I'm testing out some types of treats with my new cat, and one thing that seems to have been a hit are freeze-dried treats. Thrive and Cosma are the two brands I know, both 100% meat that's been freeze-dried. If you've ever had freeze-dried fruit, you can estimate what the taste and texture would be like for cats :)

He also likes Dreamies treats, especially when we put them in a treat ball for him to bat around. He also adores his cat tree as he loves being up high and watching everything go by. In terms of general toys, he adores a rather simple feather waggler, and we're going to see how he gets on with a toy circuit. I've also seen people who found that a butterfly in a jar, while not a cat toy, was rather interesting, and likewise the hexbug also garnered interest from some cats.

u/Scrpn17w · 1 pointr/shittyrobots

It's the OWI Robotic Arm kit and while it is a little pricey for a "toy" everything goes together nicely and it's easy to hack.

I'd recommend that if you do get it that you also get a good Exacto™ type knife or utility knife and get good at using it. There are always little nubs of plastic left when you pull the pieces off of the panels them come in.

u/BrokenSpikes · 5 pointsr/robotics

Well, something you both might have fun building together is the Owi robotic arm:
http://www.amazon.com/OWI-OWI-535-Robotic-Arm-Edge/dp/B0017OFRCY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367780839&sr=8-1&keywords=robot+arm
It's relatively cheap compared to other things and is good quality. I have one on my desk I built a while ago and it is great fun. Robotics leagues will appear more often in middle and high school (vex, first, things like that) but this should keep her interested.

u/frownykid · 1 pointr/oddlysatisfying

Just duct tape one of those grabber thingys that are usually kids toys, but they also make some for picking up stuff while riding a lawnmower. It's pretty much a claw hand on a stick. So in hindsight, just duct tape that to his crazy stick device and tada!

Edit-http://www.amazon.co.uk/Weslo-06069-Robot-Claw-Hand/dp/B000JJ3Y3W Found it, quite literally a claw hand.

u/shysqueaker · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

ok, squish the bad ones, but the house spiders are kinda helpful. (end unpopular sentiment)

Or, or, get one of those remote control spiders/tarantulas and terrorize the nurses! http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Milton-Radio-Control-Tarantula/dp/B000EUDAWG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331606976&sr=8-1

Ok, spiders aside, you have been through a crappy event and proven yourself a goddamned badass by pulling through it. Now your body is like "ok, badass, we need some time to recharge th badass battery". LIKE A BAWS.

It's hard to admit sometimes, but seeing a psychiatrist could help - temporary medication to get through the darker, harder times, which cna be discontinued once your BAWS battery is at full again. It can help - take it from a lifelong sufferer of depression.

Reddit has faith in you! I'm sure someone has made a Spiderman comment... so.. I will abstain. Keep rocking, ok?

These things man. My parents gave them to us to play with our cats with. We found out they make very nice little vibrators. Small enough to fit inside of panties and go unnoticed. You can pick them up at just about any toy store.

Having one can make things really fun.

u/m1k30rz · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It's too quiet in here!
I flippin would love one of these! wouldn't that be awesome to make? :D

By the way Rasta, YOU'RE AWESOME :D

u/JEMSKU · 1 pointr/Posture

Sounds cool

In all seriousness it sounds like it would be pretty beneficial. Thanks.

u/cwhite616 · 3 pointsr/arduino

I started my 5 year old with this non-Arduino kit, because it is stupid simple and cool to a 5 year old:

http://www.amazon.com/Innonox-Cyber-Robots-Robotic-Alien/dp/B00RWDHPHE

What's awesome is that the box that the toy comes in becomes the robot's body, meaning there is a lot of room inside the finished robot to do interesting things.

After he built it, played with it, and got bored with it, I asked if he wanted to make it cooler. We took it apart, added an Arduino and a new battery pack, and put it back together. It didn't do anything new yet, but my son became comfortable making changes, twisting wires, etc...

Then, we started writing done programs. First, we simply made the LED eye light blink. Next, we controlled it's forward speed. We've since bought an IR remote on amazon and are going to add it to the kit.

u/FreemanHagbardCeline · 29 pointsr/AskReddit

As of right now you can buy a toy that uses your brain waves to make a ball rise

This branch of science is called Electroencephalography and I sincerely believe that this technology is going to get better and better as time goes on. With this technology being refined and enhanced every day I believe that we will soon be able to interface with our devices, machines and computers using our minds.

I have a seven year old nephew who really loved it when I sent him a Coji last year. He lives across the country so I can't teach him anything myself, and his mom said I'm basically the source for all the technology in his life.

What else can I do to help further his STEM skills?

As I said above:

> Not at all. You can do a basic setup simply by gutting a child's toy. That's just getting you a single input, but it's inexpensive and simple to set up.

I mean, I still think this is fake, but getting brainwave input into a project (not necessarily reading desired arm movement, but rather just looking for alpha wave spikes) can be done trivially with junk like this.

u/rhymes_with_chicken · 3 pointsr/nostalgia

I had one of these Armatron robots as a kid. Last year got my son this for Christmas. You have (get to) build it yourself. And is just as awesome as the original. Every time I go to tuck in my son for the night I have to sacrifice a few lego guys to the voltron gods.

Also, there are literally mind-reading Star Wars toys. I was gonna post https://www.amazon.ca/Star-Wars-Science-Force-Trainer/dp/B001UZHASY as a reply to the guy saying it's "clearly fake" - with a dash of optimism that looks like it could easily be scavenged parts for a basic servo setup, triggered with toy parts, to help move his arm.

Get the Bandai vinyl one off amazon. There is a creations one in Walmart but it does not look as great as the Bandai vinyl. It’s like 7 bucks more than the Walmart one but it is def more worth it. Bandai Japan really hit it out of the park with this figure.

He will play with it ofr 10-15 minutes at a time, though has to be in the "mood" to play.

You should also be playing with a wand toy, such as Da Bird or the Cat Dancer for at least 15 minutes a day to give her an outlet and bond with you.

I'm sure there is some kind of trippy mind melting experience to be designed with EEG today. However, I think that in the short term actual game play -- as opposed to the level of "interaction" currently possible with EEGs -- is going to require a controller.

u/UndergroundPhoenix · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This, this and this all together would make my SO not only incredibly happy, but I would probably reach god-like status for getting him these toys. Maybe your husband would like them too!

Meditation is not a prerequisite for telepathy, despite popular misconception. This is actually unlocked via the Neurotechnology tree, and the Science guilds have already released tech that lets ordinary players use the similar skill of telekinesis without having to grind any exp. While we haven't had any such breakthroughs with telepathy, it's a sure bet that this too will be unlocked via Neurotechnology and not Meditation (or the other Mysticism-related talents).
