2/M here. We usually have cadets on my RoRo. Three last time I was there. If you're going in June,

i assume you're going to be on for 90 days or so. Here's a bare minimum.

#1 Most important thing for ANY Mariner- Required Documents. (License, MMD, TWIC, Etc.) You can work without clothes, but you cannot work without documents.

Clothes (Your ship will likely issue you coveralls (for port visits), safety glasses, hardhat, & gloves.)

1 pair 'going out' pants, 2 going out shirts.

3-4 pairs work pants (say, 2 jeans, one khaki, maybe some Carharrt overalls.)

6 or so work t-shirts I like these

1-2 button down work shirts.

7 pairs socks, 7 pairs underwear.

Hoodie

work jacket or coat. Mostly for going out, if you work in the ER.

1-2 pair gym clothes (if you work out)

Steel-toed shoes w/ GOOD gel sole inserts.

sneakers

Depending on when you'll be in Alaska, a good pair of themals (I like SmartWool) and thick socks

Tools, etc

1 leatherman

small (powerful) flashlight & maybe a headlamp

All necessary toiletries including a nail trimmer (and spare deodorant!)

Pocket notepad/pen (or Tally Book) for taking notes. Like This

AA Batteries. Because you always need them.

Good digital watch.

Personal

Gaming system or laptop. There will be a community TV you can use and sailors your age to play with.

eBook or iPad if you like to read. Your ship will have DVD's and paperbacks, as well.

Stamps AND Postcard stamps. Send your mom a postcard every month, she's worried about you.

You'll have lots of time to pass. Fill it up with your choice of hobby. I'd recommend the gym.

Journal, sketch book, musical instrument, art supplies if you're into that.

Decent sunglasses. Good leather gloves in case you don't like the ship-provided ones.

Elastic clips for the inevitable shitty bedsheets. Like This

Probably a new pillow. Cadets get the worst of everything. Buy them online and they'll be 'vacuum packed'.

Contigo ($20) steel coffee travel mug from Walmart. Carry coffee in your pocket all over the ship without spilling it.

Stuff I always bring (or just leave on the ship)

2 bottles of my favorite hot sauce (or whatever) for flavoring bland/shitty food

3 lbs of GOOD coffee, and a Bodum Press coffee mug No 2-hour old Sysco coffee for me.

4 TB hard drive (full). I Pirate everything when home, and fill up everyone elses when I come aboard.

PB2 Powdered Peanut butter 2 pack. Because it's awesome on oatmeal.

My Fitbit. Record is 26,000 steps / 6300 calories in one day.

iPod (some ships have 'earphone' restrictions)

Over the counter Melatonin pills (low grade sleeping pills)

I'll add more as I think of it.

Likely your ship will have a 'slop chest' or easy access to shopping. I actually use Amazon Prime and everything gets delivered to us in Baltimore. I open mine up to the crew and we all spend an average of $500 together every delivery. If there's something you think you might need, box it up for mom/dad, they can mail it to you later if you need it.

I'm a former college football player who has sustained various back injuries necessitating surgery. I'm also a pretty big guy, do durability was an important factor for me. I've got this bed frame coupled with a tempurpedic mattress and it's been great thus far for over a year. It's heavy and difficult to move, but it's super sturdy and is still running like day one, as you might expect for a product with a good warranty. I made the decision to just save up and BIFL.

I would recommend a memory foam or a latex mattress if you're going to get an adjustable base. And get some bed sheet suspenders like these.

u/mindfullybored · 1 pointr/CerebralPalsy

This won't help you get the sheets changed, but it may help keep them tucked in. For my sister with CP we have the fitted sheet and the top sheet sewn together at the foot. It really helps her keep her top sheet on the bed for longer.

Also, make sure you're buying fitted sheets that are extra deep, even if you don't have a very thick mattress. Those will go on better. And, if possible, try using sheet clips. Like these: https://www.amazon.com/Original-Sheet-Suspenders-fasteners-Adjustable/dp/B00451BG2G

u/OrcIev · 24 pointsr/LifeProTips

Sheet suspenders! There's long and short ones, but something like that works like a charm. I've got them on the top and bottom sheets. Just put them on however they work best for you.

u/thlayli_x · 2 pointsr/BALLET

Like MacDancer said, a D-ring belt works great if you don't mind a bit of bulk where it's rolled. My favorite setup was actually using bed sheet holders as suspenders. They don't damage the tights and held really well. The short length worked well with mens tights that tend to come up to the ribcage.

u/Akat-tix · 1 pointr/Edmonton

The label should say deep or tall for sure. There are little straps you can get that affix under the corner that might help!

Kind of like suspenders for sheets lol https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07TVC18BT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DNwKDb27ENPM1

u/savagestarshine · 3 pointsr/lifehacks

sheet clips help , like these: https://www.amazon.com/Original-Sheet-Suspenders-fasteners-Adjustable/dp/B00451BG2G there are much cheaper ones, these are just the 1st google result

my husband sleeps like he's on a rotisserie; the clips ensure he doesn't become a burrito

u/joanty · 1 pointr/lifehacks

Either buy garters on Amazon (been using something like these for 10 years) or if you're handy with a thread and needle, sew an elastic band across the corners of your fitted sheets.

The only way to keep the middle of the sheet from wrinkling is having it fit perfectly and not move while you toss and turn.

u/enkrypt0r · 4 pointsr/lifehacks

My bed's been like this for about five years and I'm never going back.

I used this kind of elastic strap, and I've successfully gotten three roommates and my brother to do the same. It's well worth the price to never have to deal with the corners of the fitted sheet pop up.

I couldn't recommend this more.

u/donkeedong · 3 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

Get something like this. There are some cheaper options but those are the exact ones I have. They work great.

u/worldspawn00 · 1 pointr/INEEEEDIT

These are what I use, they are dependent on the mattress piping being thick enough to hold them, so your results may vary, but they work great on my mattress

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019RBPP8O/

There's also this type for mattresses that the above don't work on: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGPU3FC

u/themonkrat · 2 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

These are the shit. I have two packs. Changed my life.

Original recommender: bookofjoe.com.

u/mamacloud · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

Sorry the brain drain has got you too!

I'm still kind of new to posting things besides text, so I hope this link works:
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Sheet-Suspenders-fasteners-Adjustable/dp/B00451BG2G

I don't sell these and it's not an affiliate link or anything. If it didn't work, you can search "sheet straps" on Amazon or Walmart or Bed Bath & Beyond.

If you aren't in North America, try any home supply store that carries bedding supplies!

P. S. It was a lot easier when my very tall, long-armed husband put the clips in after the sheet was on because he could reach around the corners with the pack and play walls set up.

u/kreatorofchaos · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

I have these and they work pretty good. 👍🏾

u/-mythologized- · 4 pointsr/justneckbeardthings

Stopped happening for you so this isn't much help unless someone else reads this, but anyway

I had the same problem, every single night I'd wake up to a corner or two coming up and the sheet half off. I used these (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MNBPZFE?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_t2), although I'm sure any of the similar items work fine, that's just the one I bought. Perfection, now my sheets finally stay on until I take them off to wash them.

u/zoofunk · 5 pointsr/LifeProTips

I've had good luck with these.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Seems like a lot of laundry, but check out my sheet recommendation in the thread. For a mere $448 plus tax (after you get seven 20% off coupons) you could have a freshly made bed every day. Just wash all the sheets on laundry day.

Also, after a little digging, these seem to have a much better reputation than the other ones I posted. Fuck it, I'm buying some. Hurray for Prime.

u/morgf · 1 pointr/Mattress

The obvious thing is to take a deep fitted sheet or mattress pad with strong elastic all around and put it over the topper and the mattress. You can also use some of those clip on elastic bands that fasten across the corners of the fitted sheet to pull it tight.

https://www.amazon.com/Original-Sheet-Suspenders-fasteners-Adjustable/dp/B00451BG2G/

If you mean you already did that and it was not enough, then put a tight-fitting cover on the topper (if there is not already one). If you are lucky, you can find a topper cover that has elastic bands already sewn onto each of the corners. If you cannot find one like that, then get some wide and heavy elastic from the store and sew some on yourself. Or you can use the long elastic-band clip "sheet suspenders" attached to the topper cover to hold it in place.

https://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Sheet-Suspenders-fastener-featured/dp/B0014AMBWK/

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0064D0PBG/

Also, if your mattress topper cover does not already have a rubbery bottom, you can get a piece or two of non-slip grip material that is also used to keep rugs from sliding, and put it between the topper and the mattress.

u/realslacker · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

I just bought these sheet grippers a few weeks ago and my sheets haven't moved since. I'm pretty big and also have had a fair amount of sex since then.

u/Harbinger_of_tomb · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

These are much more effective than the straps that most places sell, I have found. Also THERE'S A BUNCH OF THEM, SO YOU CAN LINE THE ENTIRE BED IF YOU WANT.

u/Throwawaychica · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

Buy some of these bed bands, they work great!

u/b14ckc4t · 3 pointsr/sewing

Lol, there are tons of men who sew (check out r/myog) but I understand your apprehension! Honestly though, if you could get the pattern measured and cut then any seamstress or tailor (or friend with a sewing machine that can sew a reasonably straight line) could probably be sweet-talked into cutting and sewing it together for you but it probably won’t be cheap.

You could also just buy some fabric and use these elastic clips to hold it where you need it: BetyBedy 4Pcs Adjustable Bed Sheet Fasteners Suspenders, Elastic Sheet Band Straps Clips, Cover Grippers Suspenders Holder for Mattress Pad Cover, Sofa Cushion (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075JB16XB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_H0d4CbVDS0AGV

u/forshiggles · 1 pointr/CFBOffTopic

You can pick up some sheet straps pretty cheap. Amazon has this, which may be overkill -
http://www.amazon.com/Original-Sheet-Suspenders-Fastener-Improved/dp/B00451BG0S

u/robotnudist · 1 pointr/lifehacks

I got those, plus these but neither will stay clipped onto my sheets (admittedly, they are satin). Someone needs to make a heavy duty version with better clamps.

u/humpbackwhale88 · 17 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

These are a lifesaver. Literally haven’t had this issue since I bought sheet straps a year ago

u/DrColdReality · 8 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Sheet garters.

Went into a store once and asked for these, and I musta mumbled or something, because the clerk gave me a shocked look and said, "WHAT kind of garters?"

"Sir, we don't stock that sort of merchandise. You might wish to try a store that deals in...animal husbandry supplies."

OK, so she didn't really say that last bit. But she was thinking it...

u/HikerTom · 6 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

Dude. I know exactly how you feel. Get this.

Trust me it will change the way you sleep and wake up.

u/molonlabe88 · 2 pointsr/Pictures

I have [these] (http://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Bed-Adjustable-Fastener-Suspender/dp/B004I3VDWY/ref=pd_sim_hg_3) Just put them on two nights ago after owning for months. Work perfect so far, and look at those reviews. Hard to beat 4.5 stars & almost 800 reviews.

u/Allysgrandma · 1 pointr/homemaking

I bought these little suspender things for mine. They have worked nicely. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I3VDWY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Thoraxe · 5 pointsr/reddit.com

Better idea that already exists. I like your spirit though.

u/wyezwunn · 2 pointsr/lifehacks

Get a top sheet that's bigger than your bed size so you can tuck it in real well on both sides. I used to do that when I was a kid so I wouldn't get hollered at for not making up my bed. I just slid in at night and slid out in the morning. Done!

Or buy sheet grippers.

u/I_Lyk_Dis · 15 pointsr/funny

If safety is a concern there's, ya know, [things designed for this purpose.] (http://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Bed-Adjustable-Fastener-Suspender/dp/B004I3VDWY/ref=pd_sim_hg_1)

u/huckler · 0 pointsr/interestingasfuck

Or just get Bed Bands!

I'm 99% sure they could hold human body weight without breaking a sweat.

u/hiker1226 · 2 pointsr/Mattress

Maybe try something like these sheet straps?
4 PCS Elastic Adjustable Bed Sheet Holders - Mattress Sheets Grippers to Hold Sheets Together for Flat Sheets, Fitted Sheets, Ironing Board Cover & More – Fits All Sheets from Twin to California King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076D9HTRK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OYoBCbFR9REWK

u/BruinGuy · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

These work like magic.

u/laminated_penguin · 3 pointsr/trashy

Sounds like you need sheet clips.

u/Tyezilla · 1 pointr/RandomKindness

So if you took a regular blanket and attached some sheet clips, would that pull the blanket enough to feel like it's weighted? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0TIVA6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_siwUAbFFT55B7

u/KittenPurrs · 14 pointsr/lifehacks

Like these things.

u/mrs_fairymay · 1 pointr/Wishlist

I don't have many "cool" things, but I think these are really neat - no more having to adjust the bottom sheet every night!

u/gandhikahn · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I use these and they work very well.

u/energy_engineer · 2 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Sheet Suspenders

You'll never have this problem again... There are cheaper ones too, that was the first amazon result...

u/tommyturntup · 2 pointsr/ihavesex

/r/QueeeeenSheela seriously if you are having that issue buy these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004I3VDWY?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf they are a God send. I had sheets that the elastic was basically gone on and barely fit my queen and it fixed them right up and they didn't come off for weeks. I've even turned a top sheet with no elastic into a bottom sheet with these.

Edit: Mobile formatting

u/_Square_ · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I'm actually planning on trying these
amazon link.

They have 299 5 star reviews on amazon, so I'm going to give them a shot.

u/jasonellis · 1 pointr/todayilearned

You obviously shouldn't assume. Buy some sheet straps like these or sheet suspenders like these and they will stay on for as long as you want.

u/WD40Co · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

That's disappointing. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Straps are great for keeping larger fitted sheets in-place and taut on a mattress. These Sheet Suspenders is the product I use.

u/schwagle · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Seconded, although these are the ones I have, which are a few bucks cheaper. I bought them three years ago, haven't had a problem with my sheets since.

u/MangoShit · 40 pointsr/me_irl

They sell some clips on amazon that hold the fitted sheet in place. Changed my life

here’s the ones I have but there’s a lot of other options out there too

u/EmpireCityRay · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

OP just get these (economical too) and clip them onto the bottom of the mattress and to the queen cover sheet.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0TIVA6

u/getsome13 · 3 pointsr/redneckfixes

Or you can buy some sheet suspenders

u/StinkinFinger · 2 pointsr/firstworldproblems

Us Bed Band sheet clips and you'll never have to deal with it again.

u/beard5000 · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

There are clips you can buy which pull the corners tight together underneath the mattress - my wife and I used to deal with the sheet popping off every day and this fixed it.
example

u/akawarriorslover · 5 pointsr/ihavesex
u/rckchlkjhwk · 2 pointsr/funny

sheet suspenders. Haven't looked back.

u/niako · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

This is the one I bought. I've only ever used them for fitted sheets. You just clip them onto the corners of your sheets and tighten the straps

u/_EW_ · 7 pointsr/lifehacks

Bed Band for the bottom sheet. I never use the top one.

u/Silverfire4200 · 2 pointsr/CleaningTips

You can wash pillows yes. Put them in the washer to soak with hot water and dump in a whole bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a small amount of dish soap and let it soak for a while. If they're a bit funky smelling, put in some white vinigar at the rinse cycle. Get yourself some cheap pillow protectors/cases.

If your mattress has any body oil stains, sprinkle with baking soda, spritz with hydrogen peroxide (not too wet) and scrub with a stiff brush. Let dry, then vacuum. Then to further deorderize, you can mix cheap vodka and some essential oil (lavender is a good suggestion) and spritz. The vodka will evaporate and not leave water marks.

Then seriously get yourself a decent mattress cover, and if the aversion to sheets is finding yourself tangled in them, get some "sheet suspenders"
https://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Sheet-Suspenders-fastener-featured/dp/B0014AMBWK

u/cl4ire_ · 2 pointsr/rant

Get these. They'll stop the corners of the sheets from slipping off the corners of the mattress.

u/SwollenPig · 22 pointsr/funny

They make clips to stop that, I used to always tear my bed up in my sleep.

Edit: here is a link to what I got. Looks stupid, but they work

https://www.amazon.com/Bed-Band-Assembled-Warranty-Suspender/dp/B004I3VDWY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1467564558&sr=8-8&keywords=clips+for+fitted+sheets

u/FamousDrew · 1 pointr/AskReddit

This is so close yet so far from what I need. I have a feather bed on top of my mattress and the sheets (even the extra deep sheets I buy) don't quite stick. Some kind of under mattress suspenders is what I think I need. Where are those?

Edit: Hooooly shit - amazon rocks.

u/Egxflash · 1 pointr/USMC

Or you could just get bed sheet straps....same shit

Edit: Jesus H Christ, Marine. do you not know how to use google or know about Amazon? Found this after doing a simple search.

u/Aphr0dite725 · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I3VDWY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This was happening to my bed too! We bought these and they work great. We used to have the kind that go all the way under the mattress and those were a pain in the ass to deal with when putting the sheets back on.

u/GSnow · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

I bought THESE things a year ago, because it was driving me absolutely nuts (first world problem, I know) that my fitted sheet would not stay put for more than about an hour.

I haven't had a single problem with a fitted sheet since. It just works. Period.

u/VerusDesiderium · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I had the same problems until I bought these bad boys. Made my life.
