For the shoes, not sure where to look - I have really HUGE feel (size 12-13 women’s), so I struggled too, but ended up finding a cheap pair that looked great and kinda worked for me. They were tolerable but not comfortable, and I regret not focusing more time on finding a better pair.
For the registry, I’ve had really good luck with the OXO Good Grips series of stuff (their handles are chunky enough that I don’t tend to sublux my fingers, even gripping hard)

I think being mindful of proper pedaling technique will go a long way to getting you there. Your quads will remind you when they're working too hard. Think about dropping your heel and generating your power from the hip and split the load.
Some cross-training could help too. Deadlifts, squats, and stair climbing ... concentrate on engaging the rear chain on all of these exercises.

Definitely get some sort of cycle computer. Being an engineer-ey type, you no doubt have a love for numbers and stats. Bicycles are great stats generators :). You could do anything from a cheap computer that handles speed, distance and cadence in the neighborhood of $50 or $60 ... or ... well, the sky's the limit really.
Here's my setup:
My phone is the "brains" of the operation and the periferals connect via Bluetooth, and the RideWithGPS app is the stats collector. The RFLKT is basically a remote low-powered display. Using this allows me to keep my phone safely tucked away, and saves on battery because the screen is off the whole time. The Wahoo Blue SC sends speed and pedaling cadence data, and the TIKR keeps track of my ticker.
All my stats can be viewed online at the RideWithGPS website, and I also sync my data with Strava because I like the community over there and also the slice/dice the data better. However, the RideWithGPS app I find to be a better phone app for a number of reasons.
Of course, Garmin has some great All-in-one solutions and Wahoo just released the ELEMNT which is an all-in-one Garmin competitor.
I know this isn't what you're asking for, but I'd like to suggest something that I have.
I use a Polar FT4 heart rate monitor instead of a FitBit. It's much, much cheaper. And since it reads your heart rate, it calculates your calories burned (with your sex, age, weight, height) based on how hard you're actually working.
Website estimates are always iffy in my opinion. Like, what counts as "moderate" or "vigorous" if you change your intensity all through your workout? Tracking your heart rate removes a lot of the guesswork.
Heart rate monitors aren't great for stuff like weight lifting, but they're awesome to have for a spin class or any sort of cardio workout.
I'm lucky that I don't have a long commute. But this is by far the best way to get to work!

Little info on the bike for any others who are curios.
Bike: 2016 Raleigh Furley (on discount was ~$750 with tax). I love this bike it's awesome. Chromoly steel, real soft ride. Single speed so it's 0 maintenance. Last but not least, disc brakes. Not the best, but they are much better than rims especially in weather of New England.
Tires: Gatorskins 25mm
Honjo Fenders: Superb, takes a while to install. I could have a used a few more brackets to hold everything together better too. Definitely going to get a mudguard for the front maybe the back as well.
Rack is the Topeak explorer for disc brakes. Two Ortlieb back roller city panniers.
Misc: I have a cateye volt 700 for front light and the cateye rapid x3 for a tail light, both are super bright even in the daytime!
Bike computer: Old nexus 5 that I hold on with a quadlock to track everything to strava. I use Ipbike which hooks up to my duotrap and my scosche heartrate monitor.
Spend some time looking into the Wahoo Tickr X, I'll give you my two cents why. I own or have tested all of the following HR Straps: Tickr, Tickr X, Polar H6, Polar H10, Garmin Run, Tri, Swim & Dual. Since you want to use it with TrainerRoad on your Mac (just like I do), forget the Garmin Run/Tri/Swim since they don't have Bluetooth. You can get the ANT+ adapter, which works good, but why if you don't have to.
When comparing the rest I find myself using my Tickr X more than the others simply because it has on-board memory that I take advantage of often. You can put just the strap on and begin recording. You don't have to connect it to any app to start it. You can then double tap the transmitter on the chest and it will record a lap/maker. When you are done you can connect it to the Wahoo app and download the heart rate file. You can then see where those markers are and easily edit/crop the file. For example, I'll put in on before a Crossfit class or OCR race. I can tap it when the actual event begins. When done I can go back and edit it to just capture the workout. The X also has an accelerometer and measures reps. The app will display them as you do them. It's nice if you do something like want to jump rope or do sit-ups to a certain number.
The Polar straps are super nice. The H6 lacks the on-board memory. The H10 has it but editing/cropping is a cumbersome process. It also does not have accelerometer. Polar units are very accurate. All electrode-based chest straps are relatively accurate, but the Polar ones are just a bit more, to the point they are the only brands that work with some HRV apps if that is important to you.
The Garmin Dual lacks both the on-board memory and accelerometer.
At $80, the Tickr X sits right int he middle of the Polar and Garmin. It would be the one I recommend. There is no downside to it and it has a few on-board features you might find handy like I do.
On a side note, as mentioned in comments below, you don't have to have a Garmin brand HR strap to get the FirstBeat features, you just have to have an electrode-based one.
Not sure about your friend's budget, but I have a Scosche Rhythm and it works great. It's just a HRM, nothing else, not even an app! It's super basic but pretty good; I also have a Fitbit Charge HR and the data from each is usually pretty similar.
I pair the Rhythm with an app called Digifit, which analyzes the data provided by the HRM. There are other apps you can use as well, but that one works best for me. (Android phone, btw.)

I've got a Watch 4 and it has two issues, one, no HR on the screen, and two, it simply is nowhere near as accurate even in continuous monitoring mode. The most important aspect of the Tickr X is that it uses bluetooth low energy to talk to your phone, but also supports ANT+ for exercise equipment that needs that, so if you ever do some trips to the gym, etc. it will work with all scenarios. A cheaper ANT-only monitor won't be able to send HR data to your iPhone. Why is that important? Because it allows you to use the Peloton app with heart rate while traveling. Garbage hotel gym cycles are nowhere near as nice as a Peloton cycle, but when I'm traveling, I do classes on my phone and just try my best to adjust the bike's resistance the way the class wants, and I get accurate HR in the class history just like if I'd been on my real cycle. A side benefit to the bluetooth connectivity is if you're doing other types of workouts, you can map the Tickr sensor to other functions, like double tap to advance the music playing; I use that when outdoor cycling with my phone in my backpack but still tracking it as a workout. Finally, the Tickr X supports device-free workouts, so you can start a run, etc. outside and not carry your phone, then download after the fact.

Now for a side gripe. The way the apple ecosystem works with the HR monitors, peloton cycle, watch, etc. is fairly obnoxious in general, but does work if you give everything the right permissions and possibly ability to run in the background. Other apps can push data to Apple Health, but will only close your activity rings if you put your watch on at some point that day. If anything messes up, there is no way to fix the data. For example, if I start a workout in the Wahoo app, but forget to stop it, I'll ultimately record a 12 or 24 hour workout once I go to do the next one and realize what happened. You can't edit down that data other than deleting one minute at a time for 12 hours, so I end up clearing the entire thing, and that workout is now gone. Once the app believes it has pushed the workout to apple health, you can't make it do it again. The Peloton app will push workouts to Apple health, but only for the duration of the class you took; so if you do a few minutes warmup before the real class, even the official minute lead-in, or you are chasing a PR at the end and do your cool down after the class has 'ended', that extra workout data gets missed from Apple health and doesn't contribute to your exercise minutes. For that reason I usually run the Wahoo app as an indoor cycle simultaneously, then between it and the Peloton app I almost always get my workouts recorded properly.

If you check DCRainmaker's website you can compare watches to find the right one for you. He reviews almost everything in detail. I would suggest you get one that has ANT+ at least so you can add any other device besides the HR monitor.
It looks like the Polar V800 does not have ANT+ and only works with a HR strap. From what I have been reading among the reviews, the watches that have a HR on the wrist alone are not as accurate as a HR strap. Some people like a HR strap but I hate dealing with the batteries, gel and that damn strap wrapped around me. I instead got a Scosche Rhythm+ armband strap that goes on your forearm or bicep. Its has ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity so I can view my heart rate on my watch (Garmin Forerunner), or my phone if I want, or just on my phone only.
I have gone through a couple of watches myself until I found the one that works for me. If you decide to buy another watch go through Amazon and dig. You'll find some good deals out there. I am currently in rehab to get my heart back in shape and when I compare the Rhytm+ do the heart rate monitors, it is exact. The nurses even were impressed. Good luck!
Bought this one in 2007 and it's still going strong. I love it, it's no fuss, and it work great. There's a strap that goes under your chest. Even at 50 pounds over weight at 5'8, I never had a problem with getting a reading, if you are really overweight and very thick under your breasts, maybe look into heart rate monitors that measure at the wrist (I don't have an recommendations).
Tip: the chest straps measure electric signals, so it won't work in your car (not a big deal) or in places that have competing signals (there is exactly one spot in my gym where this applies, and I think it's where their wireless router is), no where else is this a problem. It also helps to wet the contact points on your chest, so the connection is really solid.
Tip: I have to strategically place the strap under my bra, the spot that works best runs right next to my bra line. so girls can still use it, but we always have extra challenges.
Also I was looking around, and heart rate monitors have changed quite a bit, there's ones that sync to your phone now, and have gps built in. So if you just want the entry level, check out mine, if you like spending on neat gadgets, check out the competition. I have to say I'm kind of tempted.

Welcome here! I'll jump in on some of this....
I've worn Fitbits for several years - like 'em and think they're probably very good as pedometers and overall activity trackers during the day. But they really don't work well for strenuous exercise. The technology with the optical sensors simply doesn't react quickly enough to be accurate.
Much more accuracy with a chest strap heart rate monitor (I think gold standard) - my choice, a Wahoo tickr (https://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-TICKR-Monitor-iPhone-Android/dp/B00INQVYZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496324625&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=heart+rate+monitor&psc=1). But I've used cheaper models in the past like this Garmin (https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-MAIN-61562-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1496324625&sr=8-4&keywords=heart+rate+monitor) and they do fine. A lot of people seem to like the Scosche arm bands (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQHTJS2/ref=twister_B00KWHQJJW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) - I can't speak to the accuracy of those compared to a chest strap.
Regardless of what you go with, you'll want accurate heart rate feedback to sync with your bike (Bluetooth and/or ANT+ connectivity). Unless they've changed things with the newer Fitbits, I don't believe your Fitbit will sync with the bike's Android tablet - you'll want your HR monitor to "transmit" to your tablet so you can follow your heart rate data/zones on the tablet as you ride. [One nice thing you've probably noticed tho - the bike now syncs/uploads your workouts to your Fitbit page - with accurate heart rate data from the bike assuming you're using an accurate HR monitor, so you don't have to log your workouts separately to Fitbit.]

I use Jaybirds and wouldn't ride without them, but there are much cheaper (and more expensive) options for Bluetooth earbuds. My wife doesn't like riding with earbuds and went with a small external speaker (https://www.amazon.com/SoundTorch-Generation-Bluetooth-Portable-Waterresistant/dp/B01GY84TFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496325454&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bluetooths+speakers&psc=1) that seems to put out pretty decent sound. Regardless of what you go with, you'll want to use something other than the speakers on the bike - they put out plenty of volume, but they're on the back of the tablet and sometimes the instructors sound "muffled" and can be hard to hear.

ps - Final thought on your concerns about moving the bike. Wheels are at the front, where most of the weight is with the flywheel and tablet, so I think you'll be fine - it's designed to be tipped at the front and wheeled into place.
I'm now 51. Had a heart attack 2.5 years ago. went through cardiac rehabilitation phaseII. and since then have been going to the pool and gym about 5-6 times a week.
Currently my routine is to make my cardio work primary to my routine and strength training and flexibility secondary. I swim for my cardio and do anywhere between 1000 yards and 2000 yards per day, with exertion rate being the variable. It's usually a 25 min-40 min routine. I wear a [Polar heart rate monitor]9http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Heart-Rate-Monitor-Watch/dp/B0000V1PLM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/188-5515604-5824809) to track my exertion intensity everyday. I do one very intense session per week, 2 medium, and the rest very light exertion days.
In the weightroom I'm doing one major body area per day and follow up with various flexibility work to end the routine. Chest/Shoulders is bench press, dips, flys, and over head presses. Back day is: dead lifts, chin ups (using an assisted station), bent over rows or the cable machine, roman chair doing lower back extensions, and then some planks. Leg day is: squats using olympic bar, leg extensions, leg curls, then finish up with either monster walking using static bands or do frog jumping. Each day is finished up with stretching on the mats or I use the monkey bar contraption.
Nutrition-wise, about 90% of what goes into my stomach is home made from scratch, from fresh ingredients. Lots of extra virgin olive oil, good real butters, home made lard for my fats. Generally get 3-5 good size servings of fresh vegetables per day. Eat lots of cold water ocean fish at least 6 times a week.
My goal is to keep my heart and arteries in good shape, and be strong and be as flexible as I can be for as long as I can.
I can't speak to that Bose product, but that's way more money than you need to spend. I would recommend just getting a standard Bluetooth heart rate monitor from a reputable company like Wahoo.

A fan is essential. I ended up switching from stand fan to a carpet dryer. The carpet dryer fan sits in front of the wheel and blows air up through the handlebars. It's the best fan solution I have found for spinning. Finally, for mood lighting I bought a Phillips Hue Bloom light which I point at wall in front of bike.
Many people will have different opinions on which watch/brand is "best". It all comes down to what you value most: battery life? satellite acquisition time? super accurate pace? All GPS watches will tell you distance, time, pace, and splits. Most of them, however, will usually round your pace to the nearest 5 seconds.
Two biggies for me were satellite acquisition time and battery life. I started out with a Garmin FR10, which was a great starter watch, but I found myself standing around for 5, 10, even 15 minutes just waiting for it to find a signal! I now have a Garmin FR230, which is way speedier due to its ability to use GPS and GLONASS. I am even able to pick up a signal while still inside. I can turn my watch on while I tie my shoes, and by the time I'm done, it has acquired a signal and I can start my run right away.
Optical HR tech is fairly new, so you won't find too many watches implementing it. Additionally, you have to remember that you will have to wear the sensor directly against your skin in order for it to pick up your HR, so if you live in a place where it may be cold enough for you to wear multiple layers a majority of the time, a watch with an integrated optical sensor may not be the best investment. Instead, you may look into purchasing a separate optical HR monitor such as the Scosche Rhythm+, which connects to Bluetooth/ANT+ compatible devices and can be worn on your forearm.
My recommendation would be the Garmin 230 (or 235 if you are dead-set on getting a watch with an integrated optical HR sensor) since it fits your requirements. I have had good experience with Garmin devices, their customer service is great, and their products work well. I hope that helps!
I have used both wrist based and strap based (? haha). For gym training, running and 24*7 hr, the wrist based one is great (I have a vivoactive 3 but in the past I used a 920 xt with a strap). I love not having to wear a strap for these activities but still wear one on the bike since wrist based hr is shit while cycling. This is standard across all devices and I wouldn't expect it to get better for a long time. I don't see the value of hr while swimming since you can't check your heart rate easily while swimming anyways, I would get used to training by the clock or RPE for swimming. As someone mentionned the garmin HR Tri or swim strap would record your heart rate while swimming but you still couldn't check it as you swim since your watch and your strap need to be fairly close to each other to transmit in water. I believe that your heart rate from a given set would be recorded by the strap and then transmitted to the watch while you wait at the wall between intervals and I'm not even sure it would display during the workout (you'd have to check DC rainmaker's review on those strap to get this detail). Anyways the conclusion is: swimming HR is useless don't bother with it.

I have this one and I love it. It's a bit pricey but I got it with my amazon rewards points. It keeps track of your heart rate, calories and time. It's very easy to use and you can go back and see your previous sessions. The only downside is wearing that strap, but I've actually consistently had to make is smaller which is awesome.

Gadgets: When I proved to myself that I wanted to do Insanity (April '14) and got through the first month of workouts, I rewarded myself (and/or bribed? I guess? haha I respond well to self-bribes :D) with a Polar FT4 Heart Rate Monitor to keep track of my progress. It's been a lifesaver and one of the biggest factors in my continued fitness journey since I use the calorie count to push myself during workouts where I know I'd otherwise slack off.
Yesterday ended up not being great. I've been binging a lot at night and it's completely destroying my progress. I'm not really sure what to do though - I've been trying IF so I can give into my cravings and binge at night and be okay but that doesn't make me feel great... spacing out my meals doesn't seem to work for me well either. Maybe it's just adjusting to Paleo, or maybe I'm just letting myself slip and am not being disciplined enough? Either way it's a major bummer. I have a Garmin FR230 and am interested in heart rate training. I also have Apple Watch S2, which seems to give me inconsistent readings. For that reason I sort of scoffed at wrist HRMs and didn't get the Garmin FR 235 that has an HRM.
Now what are my best options? I see the Scosche RHYTHM+ mentioned around here as well as various chest straps. I could also sell off and get the 235 if folks think the HRM is pretty good.
If it matters I'm doing Pfitz 18/55 training so there will be some long runs where the effort must be very dialed in. Thanks!
I see you already bought one, but as a secondary to that, my wife has a similar heart condition (2 or 3 times a year, except in the 200s bpm) and her cardiologist suggested getting one of these.
It's not so much a heart monitor as a portable EKG. She can export a pdf of the heart rhythm and send it via email to the cardiac clinic.
Pretty sweet, she's used it once and the clinic was blown away.
Does she have a heart rate monitor? She wouldn't wear it all the time, but while she works out, definitely. I bought a Polar HRM and I love it. I do cardio dance workouts on YouTube as well as some yoga. I don't use it for yoga (although I could, technically), but I love it with my cardio.
I bought a bare-bones model on Amazon that had pretty good reviews: This is the one I got for 35 dollars. I am a petite person, so I had trouble getting the chest strap to fit. No complaints if you only want to track your heart rate. It didn't do anything fancy like track calories, so eventually I upgraded to the Polar FT-7. I love it. It tracks calories and is able to tell you when you're in the fat-burning zone vs. the fitness zone during your workouts. It also keeps a log and charts of your progress. It's twice as much at 70 dollars.
Touch crowd. Since I don’t know where OP lives I can’t recommend a bike shop but it’s worth taking the time to get the right shoes and cleats. It’s worth the effort.

It's a bit more price but this tracker is what I have and it does both bluetooth (for phone) and ant+ (if you ever get a bike computer) for $50. It will be far more accurate than a fitbit and you can map your heart rate to climbs etc. It will also improve calorie counts.
My wife uses a fitbit blaze when we ride and it works fine. It's not perfect but it's just fine. The downside to the Blaze is no GPS built in so you have to carry your phone anyway. The Surge has GPS tracker so no phone needed. Your heart rate should be reasonably accurate just make sure the band is snug.

i am using this, its really cheap and has a lot of good reviews. I have been using it over a week and it does the job. However i do not use it in the gym and i have heard that other machines that give HR messes the signal for a short while. I use it for P90x and it works great for me. The watch and the strap are pretty well constructed for the price. I actually bought mine for 25 bucks a month ago. Its a good deal considering the price and check out the 864 reviews :)
If you're going to eat back your calories, I'd do so by using a more reliable measurement of burned calories, because MFP definitely overestimates. Check out a Polar Heart Rate Monitor - they're cheaper than FitBits and work great for tracking your actual calories burned since they measure your heart rate instead of steps. I got mine on Amazon for $60 :).

I have this Scosche monitor. It works great. It does not have its own display, but sends a signal to RunKeeper in real-time, and you can monitor your heart rate on your phone continuously if you want.
What I prefer to do is get the "audio cues" from RunKeeper, every 1/4 mile, with my pace info and heart rate. This is just the right amount of feedback for me, and I can just leave my phone in my pocket.

I'd suggest springing for the HRM-TRI, regular HRMs are ~$40 on Amazon, HRM-TRI is ~$120, $80 difference and you get running dynamics and heart rate in the water.
As for the colors, man, it even seems inappropriate in casual attire, but I'll be ordering this Flat black strap on Amazon to try to subdue the watch, I'll try to upload/dm you pictures if/when I get it to give you a better idea of what it might look like.

The chest straps work fine under water, but you have to get one like the Garmin HRM Swim (more targeted to pool swimmers) or the Garmin HRM Tri and pair it with something like the Garmin Fenix 5. None of these will give you a live reading, but the devices will sync when you're out of the water and end your workout to give you a plot of your workout intensity.The wrist-based HRMs are fine when you're out of water, but they rely on light, so they don't perform well under water.Edit: I apparently just gave bad advice: According to the Garmin Support page on using a heart rate monitor strap while diving, their straps are rated only for depths up to 5 ATM.

I seem to be an evangelist for RideWithGPS lately... I love the program and use it in combination with my Zephyr HxM and my Wahoo SC Blue Cadence/Speed sensor . The RideWithGPS screen can be configured to show you the data you want to know - such as cadence, avg cadence, speed, heart rate, etc.
I can generally get a good 4 to 5 hours of ride data using my phone, with the screen mostly turned off. About 3 hours if I am checking everything continuously.

It works over both bluetooth and ant+, so if you ever want to connect it to your phone or some other device you can. In fact, it can connect to an ant+ device and at least one bluetooth device simultaneously, so if you feel like using your vivofit 2 to display your hr while simultaneously using your phone to record your whole run (hr and gps), well, you can.
I bought a wahoo and a refurbished vivofit 2 a couple of weeks back, so I can confirm that they connect easily and have so far have played well together.
On long bike rides, I found my battery to be near dead on the Watch (mostly due to the heart rate monitor being active). I would usually charge in the car on the way home.

It's an IR light sensor arm band that's lightweight, easy to set up, more accurate than many chest straps, waterproof (1m), and works with a variety of apps so you can pick the software that is best for you.
I've never had an issue using the Hr monitor. I can understand when moving it can be a bit off but shouldn't be anything crazy. I also use a hr band that goes on my forearm and it's very accurate. I find the chest ones to be uncomfortable after a period of time.

From what you're saying, it sounds like you're more concerned about what you're burning during the exercise than what you're doing through out the day. To that, I'd say take a look at the FT4 or the FT7. Both of these come with a chest strap and a "watch" to monitor your heart rate. If you ever go indoors to a machine, most machines will pick up your device and show your stats on the screen. You can plug your stats into both, both will let you know when you're out of your heart rate range, and they will take a lot of guess work out of your workouts.

Start with a heart rate monitor to quantify your workouts. Use a phone app like Strava to log your workouts (it's free). Look at the heart rate during the workout and the heart rate plot after the workout. Get it up and keep it up.

The LionHeart band utilizes ANT+ for the connection to transmit data to the server at your gym. There are very few phones that have that type of connection available (iPhone is one that does not have that connection).

The only fitness tracker I have is my Polar Watch. It comes with a HR monitor with electrodes on the band and with that I think it's pretty accurate. I've been using it recently to track my runs and how much calories I'm burning on them. I don't have any cons other than the band moving a bit when I'm using it (have to tuck it under my sports bra). Other than that, it's one of my favorite Christmas gifts and it's nice looking at all the data it tracks (HR, calories, time, etc).

It's optical so I'm curious how well those work compared to the banded ones. How do the bands fit around a female's chest, any interference with their breasts or uncomfortableness while exercising?

Yes you will be fine do a little bit of cardio on lift days, I only said you will effect your gains because I think you had 1 hour of swimming which is intense cardio.
You may want to try some heart rate monitoring - it has been very helpful for me. I got a Scosche Rhythm+ which pairs to my iPhone (running Cyclemeter, though many apps work, including Strava).
It is relatively inexpensive, you can wear it on your wrist, arm, leg or just about anywhere, and runs for over 8 hours on a charge. I don't obsessively monitor, but using it on runs and hikes has improved my ability to self-assess intensity. Before it was a wild guess, but now that I'm calibrated it is an educated guess. I surprised myself with how often I was in high HR zones - no wonder I could hammer as hard as others, but couldn't maintain it.
Chest strap heart rate monitors are highly accurate. Wrist monitors aren't as accurate and can be pretty hit or miss. The Wahoo TICKR and Polar H7 are both accurate and relatively affordable at $50. Don't know of any good devices that are cheaper than that.

I think a heart rate monitor is the best way to measure calories burned with steady state cardio. It won't work for things like HIIT or weight training or anything. But it should work for something like cycling as long as you are keeping more or less a steady pace. I use this one and like it for when I go running, but there are a ton of them out there.
The best has an algorithm that monitors change in heart rate to estimate power, very useful.

I think this was the first one I used, and it worked pretty well. The GPS ones are just nice as they can give you pace info, and map out your run.
Just a quick recommendation, I use the LoseIt app (Free), android or apple. You can add in your workout, duration and it will track kcal for you. Also will let you bar-code scan the foods you take in and give you an idea of how much you take in and what your weekly looks like. So it does macros and tracks your workouts. I also use that in conjunction with a Polar FT4 Hope that might help.
Based on this article, the sense is only if you really watch your weight and activity. And it makes sense to look towards the chest HRMs, like

I use the Scosche Rhythm+ HRM along an App called iCardio/digifit on my phone.
The app has you put in all your stats height, weight, sex, age, etc and it will continuously monitor your heart rate and give you an accurate indication on how many calories you burn for your workout.
One nice feature is that you can sync the app with Myfitness Pal and it will automatically upload your workout.
One con is that you have to purchase the upgraded version to get it to work with a HRM.
I like my Wahoo fitness soft strap I bought from Amazon about 6 months ago. Feels just as comfortable as my old Polar straps. The Garmin strap that came with my 220 felt like I was running with a plastic knife slowly scraping my man boobs, thankfully that one completely died after 2 weeks. I also picked up a 3 pack of Spectra 360 electrode gel (about $12 or so for huge bottles) to make sure I've got good contact too. I've been using the strap about 3-4 days a week since March and haven't had to change the battery yet. They've got a new version out, but I can't attest to its performance.
You need a cadence sensor that broadcasts to BTLE if you are using your phone. There are two types:
Magnetless, accelerometer based
Magnet based, does speed and cadence more accurate speed than GPS.
I have both of the linked sensors on different bikes. Actually like the magnet one better. There are a bunch of different brands, but getting one that is dual ANT/BTLE is a good idea in case you get a head unit in the future.
If you are adding sensors, I'd also suggest a heart rate strap. I actually rely on HR more than cadence.

It would be cheaper to go with a bluetooth chest strap that is compatible with your phone. If you do get a wrist based fitness tracker I would get one that has gps so you can ditch the phone altogether. Something like this garmin or the fitbit surge. Garmin let's you export your runs to different platforms unlike fitbit (Smashrun, Strava, Runtastic, etc.) so you probably should avoid it if that is important to you. Personally I would go with a older Garmin and HR strap because I don't necessarily need a full time fitness tracker and you can find them for much less $.
The only accurate way is a chest strap and connected device. You might be able to find a cheast strap that can just connet to your phone ?
I use a Suunto Ambit 3 Vertical with a chest strap for cycling. Works a treat, uses BT to the watch but not sure how much they are in the U.S. It has stuff you might not need that you will be paying for eg GPS etc

Polar makes a bluetooth heart rate monitor that supposedly works with MapMyRun amazon.
Personally I use the Polar FT4 around $65 on amazon. It's lasted for about three years now through a bunch of rowing workouts and I don't have any complaints. Not a huge deal to wear the extra watch and I believe they have a separate system if you want to import the data into a program or something.
I have the Omron HR-100C. Nothing fancy, but it's got a watch, stopwatch, alarm, and heart rate monitor. It's cheap and within your price range, and has been solid for me.
I had an FT1 but found that the strap was uncomfortable, so personally, I'd recommend spending the extra $16 on the FT4. It also has a few extra features, and since you can replace the battery on the strap yourself, it'll save you some money in the long-run.
It's still fairly removed from the heart. I would try getting a cheap chest strap and taking it through there. HRV might tell you more of what you want to know than RHR.

I second this. We use the Wahoo HRM after having terrible luck with the Polar HRM and Santa brought me a Garmin for Xmas. I’m finally getting a feel for how hard I’m working and what my heart is doing at the same time. Also helps me to remember to breathe deeply in the climb when I’m sucking wind or when I’m exhausted.

I use an HRM Tri. I mostly run and bike with the occasional swim. I figure it's worth an extra $20-30 to have the waterproof capability. The HRM Tri fluctuates in price quite a bit. It was down to $78 just 4 days ago on Amazon. If you can wait, set an alert on camelcamelcamel or SlickDeals and you can pick one up for not much more than the Red model.

I use Endomondo and a bluetooth heartrate monitor for avg heart rate for crossfit, biking, running and tennis. The fitbit flex for steps and sleeping, The aria scale for weight and bf%. Then myfitnesspal for calories. All of this is synced into my fitbit dashboard. I see how all the activities and calories effect my weight loss .
Not wanting to wear my garmin watch while climbing for many reasons, the least of them being not wanting to damage a $200+ watch, the only solution I found is a heart rate strap on Amazon that stores the data without needing to be connected to a watch or your phone. I have a Sunny belt style bike, I replaced the seat, added a cadence sensor, and bought a heart rate monitor. I am looking to replace my petals with clip in ones soon but have not done it yet. In total it all has cost me about $400 (minus the future petals and shoes). I have my bike situated facing a wall with peg board and I rest my ipad on the peg board while I ride. The only down side to my set up is I have to guess on my resistance as my bike does not have a digital resistance readout.
I did recently see that Bowflex came out with a bike it costs about twice what my set up is ($899 - so still half of what a Peloton is), and it will work out of the box with Peloton with no additions needed and a few extra bonuses my bike does not have like two water bottle holders and weight racks. Hard to justify the cost when I already have a functioning set up, but if I was starting from scratch that is what I would do.
Finally got a Scosche Rhythm+! It was only $10 off and I don't mind my chest strap. But everyone swears by them and I'm curious if there is any difference.

I have the regular Tickr, which I use in place of the optical monitor on my 225 for running, and it works flawlessly. I never have any question about the data it gives me - which is much more than I can say for the 225's optical monitor.

I use the Garmin Tri. In case you run, you'll get run dynamics, and if you swim it's waterproof. The chest straps are the more accurate you can get.

To be honest the wrist is just a terrible place to measure in general when you're moving your arms around a lot. I use the HW1 for passive reading and then a Scosche Rhythm+ between my bicep and shoulder for actual exercise. Or you could go the chest strap route.

My dad, who has a long history of heart issues and is also (ironically) a cardiologist, has a device like the Kardia. He has an older model, but this past Friday he was having chest pain and the device's readout convinced him he should go to the ER. (He indeed had a minor heart attack, and is recovering well).

I love it. It's not too chunky on my wrist. The only problem with it and I think you would run into this with any wrist worn HRM is that when I do Thrusters or anything that requires me to bend my wrists (front rack position) I sometimes turn off the monitoring because my wrist bends back and hits the off button on the side.
Wahoo Tickr. in the lower price range. lasts the longest out of any HR transmitter I have had before. Really light so it doesn't have to be super tight on the chest. the strap attaches at both sides of the transmitter so there is no hook at the side. Has Bluetooth and ANT+ so is compatible with any watch/phone and also PM5. I think that some other ones in the 50$ price range can only be connected to 1 device at a time. with this you can have your HR on your PM5 and also have your phone or watch collecting the data to review after.

I would go with Scosche Rhythm for martial arts though... I think the reason watch are not allowed is because you don't want something on the wrist as your wrist is heavily involved in the activities... Wearing Scosche Rhythm on your upper arm or upper forearm should be fine...

Buy the Scosche Rhythm+ off amazon (at your own risk). It works no problem at my home studio but I have had an issue when visiting one other studio.
Also, I've read previous posts that you need to add the number 83 in front of your device ID for it to pair. However, I did not have to do that. The number printed on the back of the device worked to sync mine.

Kardia Mobile is the closest thing you can get. I have the fitbit blaze and it will detect your pulse but it gets less accurate when you get to a high high rate like 200. I had my fitbit on when going in and out of afib while trying to prove there was something wrong with me to the doctor other than “nervousness or panic attacks”. It didn’t help so much and I ended up with a halter monitor for a month. If you are trying to catch it and get it corrected, the halter is the way to go.
I’ve had an ablation since then and it has helped immensely.
I like the Scosche Rhythm+. I use it with Endomondo (it requires a connection to a phone or some other bluetooth enabled device). I've heard it's not great for upper body weight lifting workouts, but I don't have firsthand experience with that. I do Insanity and it works well for me.
No wrist based HR monitor works for rowing, the problem is due to the load going through the arm muscles as you row meaning the light can't get a read on your HR - ideally stick with a chest belt
If you are desperate to lose the chest belt then the life beam hat works well, although the downsides are the sweaty hat and terrible battery life compared to a chest belt

Newer models may be different, but the low-budget strap on monitor I have works with pretty much all cardio machines. I lost the corresponding watch, but if I have the strap on, the treadmill/elliptical will pick it up. They all use the same transmission type (in general).

I use the Garmin 910XT with this heart rate monitor which goes around your arm rather than your chest so you don't get the chaffing. I wouldn't wear the HRM on the swim, just put it on in transition to bike.
