I transport mine on a cargo carrier on the back of my Subaru brz, so if I can do it you can too. I have driven tins of hours on the highway, done probably 90mph, and never had a single problem.

Make sure you secure the prop when you transport it, I use two bungees (the loop ones with the little ball on the end, like this looped around the horizontal bars of the cage on either side, and they keep the prop horizontal and still so it doesn't turn into a wind turbine on the highway. A piece of rope will do the same thing but the bungees are nice and gentle on the prop and easy to take off.

You'll need two ratchet straps, and to figure out how to hold it down to the carrier. In terms of carriers, I'm not sure what size hitch receive you have, but I'm going to guess it's the smaller 1 1/4 inch one. I got this one. It works well, but sits a little low to the ground and took a while to put together. I also had to make a wooden base for the bottom of it. This is the same brand and sits a little higher off the ground, so if your car is low like mine you might want this as another budget option (mine scrapes leaving my driveway, not a huge deal) I also think this is the one Tucker Gott uses, it's probably the same build quality as the one I got. Sides are a little lower so might be harder to secure a fuel can.

This one seems a little nicer, but it's double the cost. Keep in mind, whatever cargo carrier you get you will need to have a flat surface to place your paramotor on. The one I got required me to make a wooden base to sit the motor on, which isn't necessarily easy. For the two others I listed, they have metal grating that you could probably place the motor on, but I personally think a piece of thin plywood bolted to the metal would work better. That way you don't have metal on metal and it gives a little better grip on the bottom of your motor.

One thing I'm not sure I like with the more expensive pro series model, is the clamp it uses on the receiver. The curt carriers use a bolt instead of a pin, and tightening that bolt locks the bar in the receiver and gets rid of most of the slop. With a normal pin, the carrier can rotate a lot so it needs some way to get rid of that. On the pro series carrier, they use a U bolt type thing that clamps down on the receiver, so Instead of just putting the carrier in and tightening one bolt like on the Curt carriers, you have to put it in, put a pin in, and tighten two nuts.

Each have their plusses and minuses, but they will all work.

I have a 2DR with the rear seat out and absolutely love it. Light, nimble, feels like a toy. Excellent city car actually due to parallel parking capabilities. I would only go 4DR if you have hauling needs or anything more than a significant other & dog. Correct, you don't want gas in the vehicle. If you are looking for something easy you could get a hitch-mounted cargo tray. It will limit your off-road clearance (specifically your departure angle) but if you are just talking about camping/overlanding and not hard-core rock climbing it would probably be OK.

EDIT: I also have to add... I know a lot of people think carrying around extra gas cans looks badass but for most people it's really unnecessary. With a little bit of planning, the 25 23-gallon tank built in is enough for almost anything. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but there are definitely costs associated with the hardware required. Plus it's also a bit of a safety hazard... if you get rear-ended or back into a tree, there's a good chance those tanks will puncture and make the situation a lot worse.

Yep. I was surprised but the Skybox 21 fits quite nicely on my 2019. The hatch even opens fully by just a hair.

Its from amazon. I saw a guy in a parking lot with a sweet 3rd gen. He had this basket. He said it was sold on amazon as a "Bison Roof Basket". When i searched for it I found that they changed ownership or names etc, and now operate under "Arkensen roof basket". Its a 3 piece and really well put together. Also really fits the size of the roof proportionally as well

The carrier is rated for 300 lbs, but the tC's tongue weight is only rated for 200 lbs, so I try to keep it well under that (the dry weight of one of my mopeds is around 100 lbs). I use some ratcheting straps and it works like a charm.

I could probably also tow a small utility trailer for a motorcycle or kayaks or canoe or something like that, but I've never tried it. I think you could probably tow about 1000 lbs fairly easily though. The tC is geared low and has 160 hp so I'm sure it would be fine for light duty.

The light bar is great! Just happens that the fit between the basket I got and the roof of the car is a perfect fit for my light bar. It fits snug so all it's held on by is 2 zip ties on each end looped to the basket!

It will also come with a hitch if you want a tongue-mounted luggage carrier like the linked one. A bit tacky but frees up your trunk for stuff you use on the road easily accessible while the destination luggage is tied down. The good thing with the 3 is you won't need to install one aftermarket.

Again not choice #1 but it's available and really expands cargo area.

Mine is the Barricade roof rack from extremeterrain.com and it has a basket on it from Amazon. The roof rack is very good. I go to Moab like 20 times a year and this thing has been so awesome. It looks cool (I have had people stop me on the street to ask where I got it) and it's super tough and adds a ton of storage to the TJ. I installed mine alone in about 3 hours. It's a good purchase.

I've got budget crossbars and budget j-racks from amazon. The crossbars are CargoLoc, and they have a decent set of reviews on Amazon. They fit nicely. I'm not sure I 100% trust the locking mechanism that clamps the bars to the rails, so I tie them off to the roof rails to be sure. The bars themselves are extruded aluminum and are fine. If you tie a loop of good rope around the rails as a backup, well, that's not that different from the plastic strap that holds expensive Timberline towers onto the rails. The kayak racks are kayak racks. They're just metal bars and some bolts and plates that hold the racks to the crossbars. The ones I got are budget, but they also have very good reviews from users. They're functionally identical to more expensive racks.

I know some will disagree, and I probably would, too, if I used them more regularly. The CargoLocs certainly are not pretty.

I doubt there's really a difference between them though. If you want a really good one I would personally recommend Yakima or Thule brands, but they can be pretty expensive.

Whatever you do, don't cheap out and get these like I did unless you want to spend all your free time over the next week to try and get them to stop whistling. They whistle loud at anything over 45mph. Once I get that sorted out, I think I'll be happy with these, though. I (140lbs) climbed up and sat on my basket, and they didn't noticeably bend, or even creak/squeak.

It’s an inexpensive set up, but I’m honestly very satisfied with the build quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive cross country with this set up.

I bought these bars based on feedback from the Crosstrek forums. They are adjustable so they would fit both. Cheap and work great. It requires a bit of assembly and I added a few steps to ensure that for the most part its water/rust resistant, adhesive silicone to fill jointed pieces and lock tight for assembly screws. Added some flat black anti rust paint at places where it needed.

The mounting to my 5th gen took a bit of re-engineering. The brackets needed to be inverted to work with the stock cross bars. Once I did that it held very well and I can shake the whole truck by grabbing the rack.

The max weight limit is 250 lbs but I doubt I'll ever need that for my camping gear.

All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and its 200 less than the cheapest high end one piece universal rack.

A luggage rack + totes worked well for us with a minivan. We got some weather-proof totes and some straps and put all our clothes into those. It will create a lot more room for gear in the back of the van.


You have to remove the totes when you open the back hatch, but for the most part that's okay because you're only going back there to load in and out for the gig. When we stopped for meals left the vehicle for some reason, we just put the totes in the van and went about on our way.

This is what i bought for my 2012 jsw tdi. I use them for my kayaks, easy to install and lock in place with a key so they are harder to steal. Only thing i don't like about them is they whistle while I'm driving so i take them off until i need them. Hope this helps and nice looking ride!

Our Roof basket has a fold-able rail that can lift up and down for you to place longer items on your vehicle's roof.

Bought them last summer and used several times for camping trips with Kayaks up top.

I’ve been using this one for several years. It’s been great. I have a 17 foot scanoe and I t’s plenty wide enough. I secure it with a couple ratchet straps and tie it up front through one of the tie down points. I’ve driven several hours with it up to about 80 mph.

I was going to include a picture of the rack with my boat on it, but I can’t figure out how to do it.

My concern was how you'd transport it because bike racks often have issues with fat tires and non standard wheelbases. It could be a problem if you take the bus or catch a ride with a friend. It bugs me because it means my hitch can only be used for my fat tire ebike, or for cargo, not both. If I had built my ebike around a conventional mtb, then I could use this thing. The two bikes you're looking at also look incompatible with most racks that attach to a hatch. If you're always riding, then it's not a problem.

From watching the lockinglawyer and bosnianbill, I'd go with a ulock like the Uguard Brute or Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit. Their advantage is a shackle thicker than bolt cutters can handle right now. Get insurance though. There's no 100% foolproof way to stop thieves, so prepare yourself so the impact of a theft can be dealt with when it happens. I keep seeing https://velosurance.com/ pop up when it comes to ebike insurance. You might have renters insurance or something like that, but chances are they are against insuring motorized vehicles, which includes ebikes.

It's not the best but it's pretty solid. I accidentally ran into a concrete ceiling in an underground parking structure due to lower clearance than I thought and the roof rack basket was untouched.

But it's got those skinny little bars instead of big fat one. If it was a big bar/pole, I could have used ubolts. With these skinny ones.. maybe I can use a steel plate. I can use two bolts around 2 of the skinny bars and sandwich it with a steel plate from below.

I only take mine off when we get snow forecast. THAT'S the real PITA, clearing snow out of these things. I pop out four bolts with my power driver and the brackets rotate out of the way and the whole thing lifts off.

Rustproofing was a concern. I used plenty of silicone sealant EVERYWHERE the assembly had openings. The tubes that slide together got sealant in and around them. The bolts holding the rack together got sealant around the top of the threads that compressed when they were tightened down. I did my best to make sure water couldn't get in there. Did I miss something? Probably, but I hope it'll last longer than if I did nothing.

I have 3 sets of these Proline gutter mount cross bars and then this roof basket from Amazon. There are a lot of similar options for roof baskets on amazon and there are probably better/cheaper options since I bought that 4 years ago.

I've actually taken mine on two (going to be 3 within a few months) cross country road trips from Ohio to California. Have a torklift ecohitch installed which is a no-weld solution that bolts to the existing muffler mounting holes in the frame. Combined it with CURT's cargo carrier. Haven't had any issues yet. basket itself is about 70lbs and we usually have a couple pieces of luggage strapped down in it (Stuff that we don't need until we get to our destination. Mostly clothes;). I believe at last check Torklift rates the hitch at a max 200lb tongue weight with our vehicles. I might at some point swap out for a lighter basket though.

I have these bars on my Trailhawk (along with bike racks) and I have no complaints. I do get some wind noise at highway speeds, but I'm not sure if that's from the bike racks or the crossbars.

Installation was straightforward for just the crossbars, maybe 20 minutes, basic hand tools, and a step ladder.

I have put a few thousand miles under my belt with it. You kinda get used to “seeing through the bikes” kinda like watching something through a chain link fence or kids with long bangs.

From my understanding Bison, Curt and Arksen are all the same rack with different branding. I found a Arksen on eBay and received a brandless rack.

I don't recommend them though. They whistle like crazy. The culprit is the track along the bottom where the mounts slide back and forth to make them universal. I covered them with duct tape to fix it and now the noise is gone but it looks like crap

This is what I got on Amazon a few weeks ago. I haven't used them with the "J" shaped racks yet, I only put one 15' canoe on top, face down, but I had no problems, and they are very affordable compared to alternatives. $50
