I connect my Japanese Wii U to my home router like any other NA electronic and have no problems accessing the Japanese eShop or anything. The only time I had to set up a VPN on my laptop to play a game was for the Dragon Quest X trial that came with the system. DQX's online mode is only accessible from a Japanese IP. If you try to connect otherwise, it tells you that you must connect from within Japan. Offline can be played no problem.

For accessories, all of my Nintendo first party stuff - balance board, wiimotes, controlpad pro, etc - can be swapped between systems. I often have to resync my wiimotes when I go from playing Pikmin 3 to doing something on my NA Wii U. I think I bought the majority of them in America with only a few from Japan but I've forgotten which come from where.

Joysound is great! The selection volume is like a real Karaoke box and it is reasonably priced. You have to buy 利用券 from the eShop to be able to play and you can buy 1 day, 30 day, or 90 day sizes. The 90 day is something like only 2,000 or 3,000 yen. I don't know how often you like to Karaoke but my fiancee and I spend like twice that in one visit on one night at nearby Japanese karaoke bars. The music in the game is midi-based but it is a lot a lot of fun to play. I would say it is 80% the karaoke box experience. To sing, you can use the built in mic of the GamePad or buy microphones. I got 2 of the Nintendo Branded Wii-U microphones for like 10 bucks off Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Wii-U-Microphone-Nintendo/dp/B009AFLXZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375475019&sr=8-1&keywords=wii+u+microphone) and they work fine.

To be honest, I haven't had a problem with any Nintendo hardware not being compatible since the SNES. Thusfar, my Japanese Wii U is fine with my NA hardware.

For storage, I checked Nintendo of America's guide as to what kinds of hard drives are compatible with the Wii U and it worked fine for the Japanese one too.

At this point it kinda became something to collect. I have my Wii in another room from the Wii U, so I just pair them to their respective systems and I can at least tell myself "They all have a purpose". Personally I prefer to have controllers of different colors since it's a lot easier to distinguish between "the 3rd player light" and "the green controller".

I started with 4 white regular Wiimotes from the Wii. Through out the life I got 2 motion+ adapters (With Tiger Woods and Wii Sports Resort).

For everything EXCEPT golf I prefer the smaller controller with motion+ built in. For Golf (Tiger or Wii Sports) I find the longer length preferable, so I kept 1 original remote with motion plus and started getting new colored controllers to replace the originals. I have friends and family with Wii's so 3 of my 4 originals were gifted to new homes as I got new ones.

If you buy Nintendo Refurbs it's pretty cheap. You can get 3 separate colors (White, Black, Blue) with matching nunchucks for $65 shipped.

I also got the Zelda collectors edition so that right there is 5. (White+ Black+ Blue+ Gold+ White w/adapter)

The wife wanted Pink Motion+, so now that's 6.

and my son Likes the Mario + Luigi ones, so I got him the Luigi one from the Newegg NintendoLand deal last month ($30 shipped for both) and since I owned NintendoLand I sold it (Factory sealed) on Amazon for $20. So that's my 7 which doesn't include the Black Wiimote+ I got in Wii Party U I gifted out.

Honestly I'd love to get a Red one with a matching nunchuck myself but for the price of importing them from Japan I could buy a Wii mini and give away the system. I'm hoping they show up on the Refurb store at some point.

Now the Wife LOVES the Peach one so I'll definitely be getting that at minimum and that'll be 8 (unless she wants to gift out the original pink), but can already see a potential 9 or 10 if I get a deal on the Mario / Regular red controllers.

and now they announced a Yoshi one... Arrrrrrrrrrgh. Gonna have to think about that.

Setup was easy. You can find instructions on the amazon page and elsewhere to get it installed, and once you have the drivers+software, everything is in english. There's tons of resources for using an old deinterlacing program called amarectv with the device, but mine seemed to work and look fine off of just OBS. I never had any luck with amarec.

I never really had any issues with the device on my laptop, other than messing with the settings until I got it to a quality I liked. My desktop didn't seem to like it for some reason, but that's had a multitude of other issues, so I don't think it was the capture device.

Yes, S-video would look better, though I can't exactly say how much better. You can read up on the differences a bit here, and here's a random youtube video comparing different input recordings on PS2 games. Also keep in mind that you need an S-video output cable for your wii and a CRT that has S-Video input. A good chunk of TVs seem to have them, but not all.

As long as the splitter is powered, it shouldn't add any delay, and shouldn't take away from the quality either.

All good on the questions! I had to figure a lot of this stuff out myself, and ended up wasting money on different things because of it x.x

Edit: Oh, and for the recording 4:3 thing, that's just the aspect ratio on the image. The video being recorded from the capture card will be coming in 4:3(as that's what the image on the CRT is). OBS streams + records on a default 16:9 widescreen image, but keep in mind that's the full stream picture, including the capture, overlays, player cam, and whatever else you want to put on there. If you're streaming, you'll likely want to keep the 16:9 output, so you can do something like this, where the gameplay takes up one side of the stream, and you still have space on the other side for a camera and other information.

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for being as detailed as possible, it helps me answer your question. Also, this controller infographic might come in handy. I personally would sell the Wii and remotes, and just buy Wiimotes with Motion Plus already built in. This list shows the games that need Wiimotion plus, and as you can see there isn't many of them, yet you are right, to play Skyward Sword you need one. Since you already have a Wii built into your Wii U and know you need the Motionplus, you could always buy one of the custom new ones, such as the Mario or Luigi ones. A lot of people have bought Wiimotes with motion plus built in refurbished from Nintendo and have had good luck with that. Keep any nunchucks you have. Also, the pro controller is definitely worth it. It is light, insane battery life and your guests will appreciate playing on that over a Wiimote. Hope I answered your questions and feel free to ask more!

I feel like I should maybe create a guide or something in the future for how to properly record a P:M game.

I noticed you're looking at a relatively cheap Capture Card. The one you're looking at is generally considered to have poor quality and can only output a maximum of 480i. The only Capture Card I've used (and still own) in that price range is this. It can output a maximum of 480p (which is the highest P:M will go on a Wii anyway) and works really well with VirtualDub (the software you will be using). You'll also want to pick up an S-Video Cable for the Wii so the video quality is decent.

Some people will recommend that you buy a Dazzle and while a Dazzle is decent, I'd recommend staying away from it due to the massive headaches a Dazzle Recorder can bring upon you. Some models have issues with sound, some only output 480i (not nearly as good as 480p) etc.

The next step is to download Software which will capture the game that is being played. I'd highly recommend VirtualDub as it will work with the video card listed above and can also function as a video editor afterwards.

All videos that are recorded will need to have lossless codec that they go through in order to decrease the original file size. This can take a 1-hour game original video from being 500gb to 100gb. Basically, if you record without one, you'll eat up your hard drive space fast. The best (atm) for codecs that don't lose any quality is HuffYuv. The video quality will be near 1:1 as you see on the TV while also not having a gigantic file size. You can also use Xvid if you want.

Now you'll want to edit your video. Simply use VirtualDub with simple edits. Once you have your final video, you'll want to encode the file by using a product called MeGUI. It'll encode the file into x264 and NeroAAC using a video editing language AviSynth. It's all pretty easy to use.

If you want to record on your TV and computer at the same time, it'll be a little bit of a headache. Your best bet is to buy splitters and AV female to female adapters. It may look like a mess when you finally get it setup, but it'll still have no lag (or less than 1 frame).

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. There are some really good tutorials and guides over at Something Awful LP Wiki. Even though it's for Lets Plays, it'll still be able to help you since you're trying to effectively do the same thing.

EDIT: You could also drop money on an Elgato HD Game Capture, but they're really expensive. The quality is second-to-none though.

I think it definitely has one of the better stories of any Zelda game, but it's infamous for being a love it/hate it based solely around the controls. For this one, you're required to play it with a Wiimote & Nunchuk, and the Wiimote specifically requires Wii Motion Plus. I don't know that I'd trust a third-party controller for it, since idk how they work with Motion Plus, but the cheapest I'm able to find an official first-party Nintendo Wii Remote is this one (which has the Motion Plus installed into it) on Amazon for $32. If you're alright getting one pre-owned, go in-store to GameStop and see if you can find one (pre-owned for $25) that says "Wii MotionPlus Inside!" at the bottom of the controller. If you can't and still feel like going this route, there's also the option to buy the Motion Plus on it's own ($12 used on GameStop, or cheaper on Amazon but you'll need to wait for shipping on it) and you can plug that into a regular Wiimote.

  1. All the most hyped games accept 4 players including NSMBU, Smash Bros 4, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and all those party games. All very kid and parent friendly, some a little bit more difficult than other.

  2. The base console only comes with a gamepad, controllers are a big price changer (for me at least). I suggest buying the Wii Remote Plus controllers as most of the games use them. Alternatively there is the Pro Controller, it's very praised, with a huge battery life and basically it's a gamepad without the screen.

  3. It's not as unpopular as expected, it depends mostly on the country, there's a huge fan base and at least I see a great future for it. You can check some of the Black Friday deals on this sub. Also Nintendo is getting it extremely right with it's exclusives, MK8 and Smash are awesome and for some "mature" games Bayonneta 2 have been very acclaimed. Next generation console is pretty far as they have just begin to launch all the main games for it.

edit: Oh and for the ps4 and xbone games that aren't available for the Wii U, Ubisoft is avoiding it and said that Watch Dogs may be the last one, you can only have a cinematic experience in Assassins Creed Unity with other consoles. We also won't have Call of Duty any more.No minecraft and something that I actually miss is the last FIFA we had is 13. So a bunch of games are available for ps4 and xbone but not for the Wii U, I would go even further and say most of these consoles games aren't on the Wii U. But hey almost all of the best games of the Wii U are exclusives too.
u/Tricky_e · 1 pointr/wii

It depends on what games you want to play.
The old school Wii Remote and Nunchuck will work on many multiplayer games and are also necessary for playing any Wii games

However, if you want to play Wii U games, you can also choose the Wii U Pro Controller. (which can NOT be used when playing original Wii games. Only for Wii U titles)

I have found that owning one of these isnt necessary, I have been able to get by with 4 players on my Wii U using only the supplied gamepad and 4 old Wii motes (nintendo land, mario kart, mario bros can all work with the old wii motes).

It's also probably worth mentioning that this is a Wii subreddit, and your question relates to a Wii U.
I don't mind one bit...but you know what people can be like :)

the old Wii remotes were upgraded towards the end of the life of the original Wii, so if you plan on getting Wii remotes, make sure you get the Wii Remote Plus models, to ensure you can use them on everything (some games require the added "Plus" functionality to work)

u/Netfoolsmedia · 2 pointsr/nintendo

Look up the Afterglow Pro controllers. They are clear plastic controllers you can get for the Wii U that are at least $10 cheaper than the official Pro controller and is superior in every way in my opinion.

The Afterglow has a slightly smaller and conforming shape than the Pro does. Think Xbox One feel. The analog stick platforms are concave so you get superior control without slippage, once again, think Xbox One style. The triggers are responsive and feel great. The price is spot on, and they come with their own charging cables.

The only complaints I have are follows: I don't like glossy finish controllers. Both the Afterglow and Official Pro controllers are glossy. I find clear controllers tacky looking, and I don't like LEDs in my controllers. I don't plan on doing anything about the Afterglows being clear, but you can turn off the LEDs with a button press, so that isn't an issue anymore.

Wii U Afterglow: Here is a link to an Amazon listing for them. You can also get them at local Gamestops for like $29.99+tax. I bought 4 of these when I got my system and love them.

I think I may use one for a Majora's Mask mod that I want to do.

Here's my setup

Yes, yes, I know, I have a CRT instead of a flat screen TV. If you'd also notice, I play more old consoles than new and CRT is superior to flat screen for them (and much cheaper). Ideally I'll be upgrading to a small (~20") Sony Trinitron. The 32" ones are free and widely available but they're sooooo big and heavy.

Just got a Wii motion sensor bar so I can play light gun games on my PC and use the WiiMote as a remote control. Also thinking about racing games with the steering wheel attachment. Monitors are from Craigslist ($35 and $10 respectively). CRT was a gift from a friend. It's dying though (discoloration). Pre-amp and speakers were also gifts from friends. PC and consoles I bought myself.

Hiya, not sure if this is the best place to ask but here goes.

I'm looking for some advice for purchasing a new mouse and keyboard. When I built my PC 2 years ago I bought some cheap Nemisis bundle (Sumvision LED Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Kane Pro Gaming LED Keyboard and LED Adjustable DPI Mouse https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00J2U3D7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1.wnybKEXKCCW)

I am now looking to upgrade to a better quality keyboard and mouse, will primarily be used for gaming, not work or much typing. From the UK, budget for both would be max £100 pref around £80. Thanks!

Oh if you know a sub where this would be better answered I would much appreciate being redirected!

EDIT: Punctuation

The magnetic connectors are pricey but very nice. The lanyard is black and has the lock so the look is right. I pulled hard on the strap and it didn't yank out so strength is at least pretty good. The diameter of the loop isn't near what real Nintendo Wii straps is though. Real Nintendo straps are certainly stronger but hard to find.

As far as controllers go I think most people would be better off buying one of these three adapters:

http://www.amazon.com/Super-Smash-GameCube-Adapter-Wii-U/dp/B00L3LQ1FI

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SA5IJIM/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687542&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00L3LQ1FI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1DX7SZQ4P8M8EKATZTM7

http://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-nintendo-u/dp/B00RSXRLUE/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_text_y

and real Nintendo branded Gamecube controllers like these:

http://www.amazon.com/Super-Edition-GameCube-Controller-Wii-U/dp/B00L3LQ4B4/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_img_y
or
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017KIBAI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The reason I recommend this is because the latest development builds of Dolphin have native controller support built in. This means you can just setup the adapter to work with Dolphin and then plug in your Gamecube controllers and you're ready to go with no additional setup. The controllers auto calibrate just like on a real console and you can even unplug controllers and plug them back in during gameplay and everything will still work. It's works really awesome.

u/_Robbie_ · 2 pointsr/pics

I don't know if you're familiar with it or would have any interest in it, but I use a Wii to HDMI converter from amazon. There is a surprisingly noticeable difference in picture quality.

Originally I used an RCA to cable converter, then I switched to an RCA to HDMI converter, but the one that I linked is nice because it cuts out the need for an extra power cord and improves picture quality at the same time. There are plenty of options and brands to choose from, I just went with the one that had solid reviews, and it has been great since I purchased it.

u/fifosexapel · 1 pointr/nintendo

I have both the Mayflash Adapter and the PDP Fight Pad

If you already have the GCN controller, the adapter works well enough, specially if you want it for VC games. Every once on a while, The adapter disconnects mid gameplay for a few secs, so that can be bothersome, I used it with a pc like you intend to, works just fine. The downside is you have less buttons than the classic controller (no select/- and only 3 shoulder buttons) and the L and R are recognized as such instead of ZL/ZR which can be confusing in some instances.

The PDP Fight pad works beautifully, has all the buttons and the right analog stick is actually a stick as opposed to the shorter c-stick. The one downside is the controller feels kinda empty, which makes it feel cheap (kinda like the classic controller or those awful gamestop branded GNN controllers), but it only feels cheap cos they are very responsive.

I would recommend the fight pad over the gcn adapter, unless you absolutely positively need the original gcn controller. Havnet used the hori pads, they have turbo built in but as far as i know are pretty similar to the pdp pads.

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/wiiu

Don't buy it they make it look the same for a reason. Grab a Nintendo licensed third-party Wii U Controller, or just shell out the extra 20 bucks for the pro. You can also use a classic pro controller for a lot of games.

http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Commander-Wii-U-Nintendo/dp/B00ANHBJBY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1406537466&sr=8-2&keywords=wii+u+controllers - This is a cheap controller by Nyko for Wii U i can't speak for it myself but the reviews seem OKAY.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00BRA9R5G/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1406537516&sr=8-1 - This is an Afterglow controller, again i can't speak for it myself but i DO have an afterglow X360 controller which works perfectly.

If i was you, find a deal at target/wal-mart/amazon for a pro controller, it has an insane amount of battery life, and really it's just a fantastic controller. Also the wii-mote and nunchuk is used for a lot of games as well so maybe think about picking that up.

u/OccupyGravelpit · 1 pointr/wiiu

For 4 kids, I'd prioritize getting those Wii remotes upgraded with motion plus (if they aren't already):

http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-MotionPlus-Motion-Adapter-White/dp/B004V13D0I

And nunchucks to match. That'll do you really well in Nintendoland, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Wii Party U, 3D World, New Super Mario Bros Wiiu, and Wii Sports Club -- which are the best 4 player games on the system.

Also, if you really want them to play on Christmas morning, plug the Wii U in the night before and download the relevant software updates, then repackage. Otherwise it might be a few hours.

u/kitsovereign · 3 pointsr/wiiu

It sounds like the Wii Motion Plus isn't working right in your controller. There's an old accessory that adds it to a controller - but honestly your safest bet is to get an official Nintendo controller. You can get them refurbished from Nintendo's own store on the cheap.

Wii Sports Club is $40 for all 5 sports - two of them (Baseball and Boxing?) come bundled together. There's also a retail version, which should also MSRP for $40, but may be cheaper used. You could always try picking up the older Wii titles, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, for less money. If you're looking specifically for moving-around games, WarioWare: Smooth Moves (also for Wii) or any of the Just Dance titles may be worth looking into.

EDIT: OH DUH, also Wii Fit/Wii Fit U. But those'll be extra pricey what with the balance board.

u/Kurros_ · 3 pointsr/wiiu

The game pad turns off when you switch to Wii mode.

You will need the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuck to play the classic Wii games but, the classic Wii remote will work as well if you already own that. In addition, I'd also recommend grabbing a classic controller if you plan on playing Wii games like Super Smash Bros Brawl as the Wii U Pro Controller will not work.

There is an official forum list here of compatible external hard drives, but I haven't put much of a dent in mine yet so, you may want to hold off.

Typical file sizes for older SNES games seem to be in the 20-30 MB range.

I'm playing Skyward Sword on a launch Wii, so the one you bought 2 years ago will be fine. The black ones are newer models, but the difference is pretty much just the color. The only thing you'll need to do is make sure he either has a wii motion plus adapter or a Wiimote Plus. Skyward Sword requires the use of this controller because it utilizes more advanced motion controls than the original wii remotes. The nunchuck hasn't changed.

If you bought Wii Sports Resort, it should've come with a motion plus adapter, so he might already have one, in which case, you just need the game. That might even be what you're referring to when you say "motion adapter." I'm not really sure what that is from the context of your post, or the "hard mat thing," either, for that matter (balance board, maybe?).

I've been researching gamepad cases for the past few days, and have found the PDP silicone jacket to be the most popular/cheapest/attractive one that still allows charging on the cradle. It's only $9 on Amazon with free Prime shipping.

If you're more into hard cases, then Best Buy has a Rocketfish InvisiShell with a kickstand on clearance for $2 right now that's got good reviews, or theres an Amazon Basics one that's nearly identical for $12. Both of these also allow for charging on the cradle.

u/Whirlspell · 3 pointsr/wiiu
  • HORI makes a line of plastic shells, which are good and there are several design choices. I used the clear plastic shell (got from Best Buy on clearance last year for like $4) and it still worked in the charging dock just fine. I eventually took it off because I didn't like the added bulk to the gamepad. It just feels better to play when it's at the size/proportions that Nintendo designed it, IMO.

  • There are also silicon skins, which are grippy until your hands get warm, then they're slimy and gross so I don't like those.

  • NERF has a cool shell, but it's bulky.

  • Skins/decals like the ones from decalgirl.com can be ordered with a matte finish to keep the fingerprints away.

Now, the question is if you are Xbox or PS family. Xbox One game + adapter hard to get under $80, PS4 you can find for $40.

So if you're PS4 it's $65+shipping. Most of the concerns that people have right now is exports and legacy dlc entitlements. RB3 Export works just fine(another $15 though). RB1 is rolling out and the other soon follows(except Beatles).

I would wait until all exports are out if the main set list is your concern and you're not willing to dump another $40 for DLC out of the gates. I'll also wait to see if any sweet band bundle deals comes out. The RB4 guitar is easily the best guitar made imo.

Although I play it daily, practicing those drums at least 30 minutes each day.

So what's the point of listing an item as "Prime" if it's not in stock, not fulfilled by Amazon, and/or not actually 2 day shipping?

Over the last month or two I've had all those things occur:

An item would ship to me in 2 days, but wasn't expected back in stock for 2 or 3 more days. Yet it was one of the top recommended items for my search.

Another was sold and shipped by a 3rd party, but was still listed as Prime and had 2 day delivery. I personally preferred fulfilled by Amazon if not sold by too as I'm not having to deal with a 3rd party if there are issues.

On Wednesday I ordered this adapter so my kid can hook up our old Wii via HDMI. Shows as qualifying for Prime, however it noted at the time:

>FREE Delivery Thursday, Aug. 15 - Thursday, Aug. 22 Details
>
>Extended delivery time: To offer this low-priced item and a variety of such products, this item ships via ground.

As of this morning, it still hasn't shipped. I can't remember the last time I had a package that traveled by air, at least informally based on tracking checkpoints.

IOW, lately I just feel bamboozled that my Prime subscription may just be a way to secretly get me to pay for shipping with out me noticing. And labeling items as Prime a way to get higher margins from sellers. 🤔

Obviously the perfect addition to yesterday's Wii Fit U w/Wii Balance Board accessory and Fit Meter which can still be had for $54.39 but currently says "usually ships within 2 to 4 weeks" which is okay if you want to procrastinate those calories away anyway. ;)

Edit: FYI, there seems to be several sellers that it switches to in the event of a cheaper (pennies cheaper) listing.

u/picano · 2 pointsr/wiiu

Smash, Kart, and Rayman legends support the widest range of controllers.

If you think your co-workers would fair better with more traditional controllers --- the Pro Controllers are the closest fit. They are a fairly expensive but also have a nearly 80 hour battery life. In games that support it, pro controllers can usually be used interchangeably with the gamepad (screen controller).

On the other end of the spectrum, the wii mote is cheaper, has less buttons (primarily used for simple games), includes pointer / motion controls, and requires batteries.

Some games will require the nunchuck addon; alternatively, a classic controller addon provides support similar to the pro above.

All games will list controller compatibility on the back of the box (or info page on sale sites).

While considering your theory, I got to thinking about the logistics of the piano setup. How exactly is the piano and controller hooked up to the PlayStation and for what purpose? Maybe the controller controls the piano? The red ring around controller did always remind me of the Wii remote wheel https://www.amazon.com/Official-Nintendo-Wii-Remote-Controller-included/dp/B0013B30SY Though I’m thinking probably not because the piano looks like something that can be manually played somehow. So maybe the controller is used for communicating the piano key presses to the PlayStation. But how do the cords for the controller, or PlayStation if it is on the piano or something, reach the TV the other side of the room? You’d think if the piano was a PlayStation accessory, everything would on the same wall together for ease of use. And speaking of ease of use, if the second slot is also used for piano and chat, is the player supposed to get up and sit on the piano bench whenever they want to say something? I feel like that would be very inconvenient and hard to see the responses on the tv from the angle. So maybe the controller can be unattached from the piano and an extension is required. Or maybe a multitap is in use with three controllers plus extensions. This room is sounding like a death trap with all these cords and controllers and accessories running all over the place. Ive probably thought about this too much however and should repeat to myself this is just a show and should really just relax.

Anyhoo I like your theory. I’ve been stumped when it comes to this part of Petscop since I’m a very non musical person I really had no starting point and this gives me something to think about =D

Instead of the XFX power supply, consider the EVGA 500W white. It costs pretty much the same and comes with really nice sleeved cables. If you haven't already, check out CiT cases. It's up to personal preference but I think some of the cases (F3 series, Dragon³) look really nice. Solid build, maybe grab up some extra hard drives when you need them but if you don't need storage then don't bother. Good luck with the build.

u/billybobiswatching · 2 pointsr/wii

I believe the Wii Family Edition isn't compatible with GCN controllers. For a Wii that has GCN compatibility the Wii would have ports on the top of the console (along with 2 memory card slots) you just have to open up the top. The best I can suggest you to do is to get another Wii Remote on a site like eBay (around the 10 dollar price range for an official one) and a PDP Fight Pad or a Hori Battle Pad (which are basically Classic Controllers that are like Nintendo GameCube controllers, you plug them up to the Wii Remote like the Nun-Chuck or a regular Wii Classic Controller.)

u/infrared_hologram · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

All WiiU games and any Virtual Console games that are in the WiiU's eShop can be default be played 100% with the gamepad. If you want to play old Wii games you will most likely (99% of games) need a Wiimote and nunchuck. Based on personal preferences you can then opt for a Pro Controller to use with certain games if you want. For example, I played Hyrule Warriors exclusively with the Pro Controller even though I didn't have to, just 'cause.

u/reali-tglitch · 2 pointsr/wiiu

If you want 3rd parties, check out the Afterglow controllers. I find them to be more comfortable for some games, and they are cheaper. PDP makes some decent quality stuff.

While unavailable online, they can usually be found in Gamestops and places like Sears, WalMart, Target, etc.

u/jodansokutogeri · 1 pointr/wiiu

The 2 remotes and nunchuks are most likely the launch models and are fine for almost all games. They will definitely work with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros for Wii U.

For Wii Sports Club and Nintendo Land though you'll want to buy either a Wii Motion Plus which will plug into your normal remote or a Wii Remote Plus which would serve as another controller.

u/Ranefea · 1 pointr/zelda

Hahahaha, well I only mentioned it because you didn't mention having an NES. Better get on that, then! =P

When I say "not too expensive", I mean like $10 USD. I got mine in 2011 at Gamestop for about that, and I saw them on Amazon for that as well (and a two pack for $16). They also sell wiimote covers that are meant to fit the adapter as well so it's more secure, but they can be kind of bulky, although I have small hands so that may have been more of a personal problem, haha.

u/BaddDadd2010 · 3 pointsr/Rockband

I think you're right, the vouchers should be honored as long as they are still selling the bundle new. On their website, they still claim it has a microphone. Not sure if this is the same bundle you bought, or if they now have an updated one with a mic instead on expired voucher.

That said, the WiiU microphone is a good choice if you end up needing to buy a mic. We have it and like it, and I've seen a lot of people recommending it.

u/linusthedog · 1 pointr/GameSale

I've personally bought one of them from him as well as a Pro Classic controller, Wii U Pro controller, Nunchuk controller, and Gamecube Wavebird, and all were in great cosmetic shape and 100% working order. His prices are also very solid.

u/FattimusSlime · 3 pointsr/gaming

Nintendo absolutely has not always put the A to the far right.

The N64 controller looked like this (with the A button where it is on the Xbox, surprisingly!), the Gamecube looked like this while the Xbox was out, and the Wii looked like this while the Xbox 360 hit it big.

Xbox has kept the same controller layout across three generations, right up to the modern one. Nintendo went back to a layout they haven't had on home consoles since the SNES. Who's gonna have the muscle memory for a system from four generations and over 20 years ago?

You are gonna want to get wii motes with wii motion plus (you can see the writing on the bottom, this controller contains a 2nd accelerometer making the controller more accurate for games like Skyward Sword. Also there might be new re-branded controllers that say Wii U)

Next we got the Pro-controller which is a next-gen like controller. It is similar to an x-box controller except for the buttons are configured nintendo style(SNES, 3DS, ect.) while having both analog sticks on the upper parts of the controller. I plan on grabbing 1 or 2 of these.

What I'm talking about (wii S-video + AV cable) is one cable. Because the Wii comes with a standard AV cable (albeit with a proprietary connector to the Wii, but the output is universally accepted AV composite cables: yellow, red, white for video and left and right audio.) the cable with the s-video is the same thing, except it has one more wire that ends in s-video output, and this will plug into the ElGato. So, you do need this single cable to capture it via ElGato. Here's the link: link

I bought a Gamecube controller adapter off Amazon (link) and have it connected in "PC" mode. It registers as 4 GameCube Controller Adapter (regardless of controllers being plugged in) and it seems to work as input. The four logical controllers show up under Big Picture > Settings > Controller Settings, but in Steam, it doesn't appear to behave the same way as, say, my Wii U Pro controller. When I click the Wii U Pro controller, it shows options for preferences, identify, calibrate, and layout. However, when I click one of the GC controllers, it immediately takes me to layout, and although I can change the button assignments, the only options are "cancel" and "clear and exit". Backing out of this screen resets the button assignments, and the controller does not seem usable in my games under Manage Game > Controller Configuration (when the Wii U Pro controller is not connected, it says no controller is connected, even though the GC controllers are showing in global settings).

How can I make the GC controller usable?

The reason why amiibo have become significantly more commonplace now is because Nintendo ramped up production on them to meet demand. I know Shovel Knight isn't going to be anywhere near as popular as some of Nintendo's franchises, but even Yacht Club Games had to have known that having only around a dozen of these things available per store wasn't going to be enough. It's not like these guys haven't made merch of their game or anything before.

Oh, and pre-orders for the amiibo went up on Amazon last night. As of this writing, they're listed as Currently Unavailable.

There rubber dome, and the mouse has tracking issues, if you play CS stay away from it. Cheap and not good.

if you don't want to spend $50, I bought myself this 3rd party one for $30. It has solid reviews. I can't speak for it myself since I haven't received it, just a heads up!

Afterglow Pro Controller is a bargain. Found it at WalMart for $20.

There's hdmi converters for Wii Xbox and GameCube available. Just google them. I personally have Wii to hdmi and ps2 to hdmi and they work fine

IIRC, you can get the peripheral for $15 on Amazon. Order now and you should get it by launch.

EDIT: It's right here if you're curious.

u/MajinVegetaTheEvil · 4 pointsr/WiiHacks

For Wii, you can find decent adapters for less than $20 from Amazon. I did. This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0753CZ8MC

GameCube? Those are rarer and a lot more expensive. The cheapest is the Carby v2, which costs $75. I just got one. https://insurrectionindustries.com/product/carby-v2/
This only works on a DOL-001 console.

u/Cyber_Kid_William · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

The company PDP actually did make updated GameCube controllers with the extra shoulder button and the plus and minus buttons but if I'm not mistaken, it only worked when plugged into a Wii remote.

Can I get opinions on shovel knight requiring his amibo to fight?

I'm okay with the crossover itself but 13 bucks plus a extra 20 if you have a old 3ds, it really points out the "physical dlc" argument.. They better have a regular way of unlocking the fight.

Is there a idfference between the one on Amazon with the Smash packaging?

I bought one from here and the packaging didn't look like that though

Will I be able to pair this to my PC?

I want to do some Wii emulation and I know you can pair a regular Wiimote but dunno about a "Wii U" branded Wiimote

You don't get 2 gamepads, you get a different controller for 2 players! You can use a wiimote (which you may already have), or a Pro controller for this.

With GameCube controllers?

If you don't want to buy the expensive switch controllers there are adapters.

u/Lilikura · 2 pointsr/wiiu

Sorry, if I wasn't clear. The console itself comes with the tablet, the gamepad is completely optional, and most games want you to have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Remote-Plus-Black/dp/B0094X28J0/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1396401930&sr=1-4&keywords=wii+remote

I don't remember if it came with any, or how many, because I bought it at launch. But really, Wiimotes are all you need for multiplayer. Those and games.

Shovel Knight has been there for a while:

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0151K6J9Y

He was available for pre-order a while back as well, I snagged one at the time. From what I understand he was put up by mistake and will be going up again soon.

I am currently using this. I haven't experienced any issues yet, and even the Home button works to take back to main screen. I don't like the button layout however, just feels wonky.

PDP Afterglow

Pros: It has decent analogue triggers. Battery life not bad.
Cons: the rubber on the thumbsticks will probably tear a bit.
I don't use mine that often, but Mario Kart / Smash mulitiplayer has worn out the left thumbstick and it flaps a bit now, which is annoying.

It's not a terrible controller - good if you prefer analogue triggers, but I would recommend the Pro Controller if you can afford it, you definitely get what you pay for: solid, and insane battery life. I only bought this one (PDP) because I wanted two Pros and the only had one left in the shop.

u/enjineer30302 · 4 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

No, you can get it (something with beating stuff using tilt controls), but that "Golden Wheel" ad uses a Wii Wheel for reference. If you look at it closely, it's got the circle where the Wii logo would be in the middle, and it's got the hole for the B button. Compare this to this

Wii U Fight Pad. These plug into Wii Remote ports, and can be used as a Classic Controller for the Wii or Wii U.

I'm using an off-brand one from KELUX. It was cheap as hell (less than $10 iirc). Got it around the time Nintendo ones were $60+
