  1. I just got home from my bank! Now I'm relaxing on the couch with my kitty.
  2. It was really hot outside and in the car, so it's nice to sit back and enjoy the air conditioning for a few minutes :)
  3. Tomorrow I'm going to do the same thing I do every day--try to take over the world!! Mwahahahaha. Or apply for jobs, the one occupation of the unemployed haha.
  4. My number one goal right now is to find a job!! I hate not working, and I'm really quite bored of my forced vacation haha.
  5. I do not have a desk. But on the couch with me is a pair of scissors, a little dessert bowl that used to be holding a bunch of blueberries, my one-eyed hairless cat, and a folder full of my sister's schoolwork.
  6. Place words, phrases, or clauses that describe nouns and pronouns as closely as possible to the words they describe.
  7. One of my sister's school books, titled "Writing Skills: Success in 20 Minutes a Day"
  8. A bite of English toffee from Disneyland!! I like to get sweets at their sweet shops to enjoy for a couple of days after my trip :)
  9. Well, currently I'm working my way through The Know-It-All by A.J. Jacobs! I'm really enjoying it.
  10. Wow, this is a really tough question for me, because I've been doing a lot of reading since I graduated. I really enjoyed "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green though, so I guess I'll call that my favorite.
  11. I think this question is fun, so I'm going to answer for each of my wishlists! I'm obviously NOT ASKING for all these things--I just like seeing the cool stuff on my wishlists :D My most wanted item from my Expensive Things wishlist is this kindle with all the bells and whistles. Obviously that's not something I'm ever expecting to get gifted--it's my wild dream item that I'm super excited about saving up for :) My most wanted thing from my default list is this kitty seat! My cat isn't allowed outside, but she loves sitting by the window and looking out--I'd love for her to be able to do that more comfortably :) My most wanted book from that wishlist is A Dance with Dragons because NOBODY TOLD ME A FEAST FOR CROWS DIDN'T HAVE ANY DANY OR TYRION IN IT. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THEM! My most wanted movie is either Tangled or Brave, because I love Disney princesses and I don't have those movies yet D: My most wanted music is The Lumineers, because they're amazing! And my most wanted cheap thing is The Essence of Style, because I've been dying to read this book for YEARS. That gives you lots of options of my most-wanted things, so you can pick what you like the most if I win!

Thanks so much for the contest! DANG IT I POSTED BEFORE INCLUDING Zweihander BECAUSE I'M SILLY. Thanks for the contest!! I had fun with it :)
u/Feeling_Pretty · 2 pointsr/CatsandCosmetics

Is it $100 total for all three? Nonetheless here's mine! I'm not entering, but thought I still do this for fun! :D

  • Makeup: I think their Fullmetal Collection is so colorful and bright! Alkahestry, Colonel, Equivalent Exchange, Day of Reckoning, and Fullmetal are pretty awesome look shades. That twinkle is pretty.

For a full size shadow from Shiro it's around $5-6.

  • Vinyl: Rush and The Beatles are must haves for a vinyl collection. Miles Davis too; that jazz music is super nice and smoooth. And of course, so MJ in that collection won't hurt either! ;)

I think a vinyl on Amazon is $20-40ish depending on the record.

  • Books: Books are a toughie for me! I used to read quite a bit, but after having to read 3-4 textbooks each quarter, reading isn't that fun anymore.

But I want to give you books I want to read and to be read later on:

  • Lolita
  • The Secret Life of Bees
  • The Thirteenth Tale
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
  • Child 44

I'm pretty sure an eBook on Amazon for kindle is waaay cheaper than getting a printed novel, so you can get quite a handful. Plus, Amazon has free ones too :D

A good starter list of a few different styles, with links to Amazon to get some samples...

  • Barber: Adagio For Strings Op.11 - Slow yet intense string piece.

  • Dvorak: New World Symphony - Good symphony with a wide range, from slow moving parts to more bombastic parts. (at times, you can hear similarities to the score from Star Wars/Imperial March)

  • Rachmaninov: Vespers - One of my personal favorites. Choral music - intense, haunting at times, interesting harmonies founded on that trademark Russian low bass.

  • Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro A very accessible opera, and one of Mozart's most famous, perfect for a beginning opera listener.

  • Beethoven - Symphonies 5 and 9. Easily two of Beethoven's most famous symphonies. Beyond the parts you hear in movies and commercials, very moving and complex pieces. The 9th is incredibly deep, particularly the 4th movement. I literally have over a dozen recordings of this piece alone, and hear something new every time I listen to it.

  • Vivaldi: Four Seasons. You'll recognize this in quite a few places. I'm fond of the Winter suite, especially the third movement.

  • Bach: Brandenburg Concertos. A good example of Bach's counterpoint style in Baroque string music

  • Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto #2. Intense and melodic, this piece transitions from sweeping melodic lines building to full frenzy - almost chaotic at times.

  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto #5 - Emporer. You could call this a "fancy" piece - several running lines across the piano, including heavy ornamentation and embellishments, particularly in the 1st and 3rd movements. The 2nd movement is more reserved, and it's tranquility bridges the more lively movements.

  • Stravinsky: Rite of Spring. Fascinating, driving intensity - asymmetrical rhythms make this very interesting, unconventional.

  • If you're feeling adventurous and want to delve into a longer piece of a different style, Handel's Messiah or Mendelssohn's Elijah are two great oratorios.

This is really good. Bluegrass isn't my favourite genre, but when done well, and against other compositions like this, I find I sometimes really like/respect how it's done. This actually does an admirable job. About the only negative would be that there's no real break in it to emulate the change in dynamics from the original. And yet...it still works, so it's not really a negative. This may be one of the best covers I've heard, possibly because they're not even trying to emulate Gilmour's playing.

If you like this, you should love this album (note that you can get it at the cheaper prices used...that new price is insane...it was $14 when I got it):

I think most people would be perfectly happy with the $15 Sony remaster of Kind of Blue. I just checked and it's actually under $14 right now on amazon.

For someone who wants an all-analog version, the 1977 reissue here can probably be had for $25 and actually sounds better than most of the 1959 OG 6 eye copies I own (almost all of those have a weird pressing issue that causes lots of surface noise).

For me, I collect different pressings of Kind of Blue because I enjoy it. I also have a long-range plan to make some sort of resource for people to listen for themselves (although it would be lossless digital files, not the actual record) to see whether it's worth it for that individual to buy a more expensive edition.

More generally, though, my advice is pretty specific to Columbia records. People that are into collecting different genres and labels likely have other cost-saving tips. Riverside records (jazz), for example, are notoriously expensive. Int he 1970s, Milestone records had bought the Riverside catalog and reissued many hard-to-find records as combo "two-fer" records, where you got two albums for the price of one (not sure if these are remastered from the analog tapes or they still had the metal to do more pressings). These are the best value out there for Bill Evans fans because most people don't know about these. When Milestone released the albums, they changed the names and artwork, so it's not clear that "Spring Leaves" is actually "Portrait in Jazz" AND "Explorations." That one is for sale here for $10 with the seller accepting offers.

I don't have anything against modern reissues, but it can be fun to find older records that are an even better value.

Two books I would suggest are
The Bach cello suites. [1] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhcjeZ3o5us
Sheet music. [2] http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Cello-Suites-1007-1012-Starker/dp/B004610HD4/ There are many out there (some cheaper than this) But this is the copy that I have. I like the fingerings and the bowings.
CD [3] http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Cello-Suites-Johann-Sebastian/dp/B0000CG8EF/ I like Pablo Casals’ recording (of the several I own) because he takes the pieces faster. Yo-Yo Ma and Jacqueline Mary du Pré have good recordings as well.
This has already been mentioned many times on this thread because it’s truly a classic. If he doesn’t have a collection of all 6 then this is a good choice. The first suite is the most commonly heard. It might be a bit hard in the beginning but it’s a collection of pieces he can really grow with. I got a book of the six suites when I was nine and I still play them. I remember the prelude of the 2nd suite got me into the Phoenix Youth Symphony.
Every Body’s Favorite Cello Solos. Sheet music. [4] http://www.thejuilliardstore.com/browse.cfm/cello-solos-(everybodys-favorite-series-volume-40)/4,31636.html Sorry not an Amazon link, those guys only had a used version for $75 (wtf). Either way the link includes a list of the songs that come in the collection. You also get a piano accompaniment, but no worries the piano part has no melody, only supporting harmony. He should find some of the songs easier and other songs will be too overwhelming. Looking through my copy, it ranges from around year 1 to year 3 music. Another book that should last over the years.
Man this is hard. Cello music for the first few years is the hardest to find. There are a lot of different series intended to teach like Suzuki with the “Suzuki method” and the Essential Elements series. I played a few of each of those books and they weren’t bad, but I never really liked them. I had and loved a printed version of the e-book for “Music Book 1 - Cello Part A (melody)” [5] http://www.celloonline.com/cellomusicbooks.htm but can’t find a printed version now. It might not be a bad idea to take him to a music store and have him look around to find something his level (maybe on the day of the anniversary ) I wish I could be of more help, tell me how it goes.

u/Nightbird1 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
While I don't often listen to Jazz music, I find that it holds such strong roots in a lot of what I do listen to. Upon my trips to New Orleans, I've found that Jazz holds such a strong bond within the community and the culture and that -alone- is fun and fascinating.

) I'd love to have this if I win!

Have a safe trip!! :)

Welcome home Kalani!

And I don't really have a hometown. I've moved so much that no place really feels like I'm 'from' there. I am rather fond of my new town though. It's just got a nice but not overwhelming southern hospitality feeling.

And I actually have a request this week if I win! Usually I like to be surprised but I'd love this Seth MacFarlane album cause I've been wearing out my phone battery trying to play it while I'm in the car.

u/atlastata · 6 pointsr/radiohead

Oh sure, look it up. If I were smart, that's what I would have done. ;-)

To save other people the trouble:

Pablo Honey

The Bends

OK Computer

Kid A - due to the lack of singles (and B-sides), this might actually be the worst collector's edition, which is amazing because this album is awesome awesome.

Amnesiac

Hail To The Thief

In Rainbows

I guess it almost comes down to which album you like the best. I'm a big fan of The Bends, so I enjoy that pop driven second disc more than somebody who tuned in after Kid A (for example). What do you like, OP?

u/scrunchcrunch · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

JS Bach wrote 6 solo suites for cello for cello. Suite is just a fancy word for a group of peices, often in the style of popular dances of the day, that are considered a gropu of music. Consider a suite something like an anthology of short stories- enjoyable individually, but when viewed as a whole, epic themes and ideas emerge.

The prelude to the g major suite is probably the most famous bit from the suites, but don't over look the rest of the G major suite, or the other suites. They are as strong as each other.

I adore the bach cello suites, I feel that all the ideas of western music are distilled into these 6 suites.

When listening to a recording of the Bach cello suites which performance you choose is going to have massive impact on what you hear and what you take away from the suites.

For a more traditional interpretation of the suites, you can not go past Pablo Casals while for a more modern interpretation have a listen to rostropovich

These two sound like they are playing different music completely, even though they are reading the same black dots on the page.

Happy listening.

I can't narrow down the songs and movies to 5 but I think I can take a stab at the albums. The links go to Amazon. In no particular order...

  1. Kind of Blue by Miles Davis - It works in every situation. It makes me feel like I am out in nature. Just that feeling of being able to breath deeply and you think, "this is where I am supposed to be."

  2. Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd - It's so timeless. If this album came out today it would be hailed as innovative and fresh.

  3. In On The Kill Taker by Fugazi - The energy. The passion. The emotion. When I need to get pumped up, this album does it for me. I can hear the first notes of Facet Squared just typing this.

  4. A Fistful of Film Music by Ennio Morricone - My favorite film composer. This anthology is awesome from top to bottom and I could listen to it all day.

  5. Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan - I was introduced to Bob Dylan way later than I wish I was so I feel like I am making up for lost time when I listen to him. No one makes nonsensical lyrics make so much sense like Dylan.

I could survive on a desert island with these 5 albums and never want for music. I might want a power supply though.
u/westknife · 2 pointsr/classicalmusic

I did this very same thing, my friend. Here's what I did:

  • Listened to this album (a lot)
  • Read the book The Rest Is Noise by Alex Ross, and listened to a bunch of the recommended recordings, and followed his blog
  • Listened to lots of EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series
  • Read lots of stuff online about composers I liked, including Wikipedia and this website and this one too. I also started to learn about the different forms/genres within classical music, and the different time periods as well
  • But mostly, just listened to lots and lots of classical music. The more times you hear the same piece, the more you will feel you understand it and the better it becomes - and there is no upper limit to this. Explore!

I still love rock and metal for the record, they are not mutually exclusive :P
u/jlcooke · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Great Gig in the Sky's voice solo has artifacting even with MP3s. Also symbol crashes chirp in any FFT-based lossy audio compression.

For the best experience - might I recommend DSotM in 5.1? https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Side-Moon-30th-Anniversary/dp/B00008CLOA Comes in SACD and DVD Audio.

James Guthrie remastered it from the original studio tapes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Side_of_the_Moon He's also remastered several other classics in 5.1 - all excellent.

There are a few notable changes:

- On The Run - footsteps go AROUND you

- Gig in the Sky - "if you can hear, this you're dying" is more audible

- Closing base drum (aka. heart beat) - the dub-over of Beatles Ticket to Ride is no longer audible.

I would love to add this to my record collection just because it's an essential jazz album. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0041TM5OU/ref=aw_wl_ov_dp_2_10?colid=22IOTWYO3489C&coliid=I25162B4I0PCO2

Or perhaps a new book? Always looking for more ways to be a better man and this looks like a fun read/coffee table conversation starter. :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1595553738/ref=aw_wl_ov_dp_1_12?colid=18OC6RH85DR84&coliid=I109JPWQ1SG2SP

Thanks!

u/hazelowl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I'm not a really big jazz fan. I like some of the elements of it that influences a lot of music (in that I like a jazzy undertone), but I'm not real fan of straight up, pure instrumental jazz. I tend to lean towards blues a bit more.

I would love either this album or this one.

Thanks!

u/JCougar · 1 pointr/Jazz

It's neither sax, nor slower piano, but Medeski Martin & Wood definitely produce some great contemporary albums. Try Combustication. I believe it is on Spotify.

EDIT: I'm also a huge fan of the CTI/Kudu recordings from Gabor Szabo, Idris Muhammad, Stanley Turrentine, etc. If you listen to hip hop at all, digging through CTI you'll soon find where they farmed tons of samples.

u/arachnophilia · 1 pointr/vinyl

would you pay $90 for it? because it was in fact reissued.

it's kinda pricey still, but i got mine free with rewards points, along with the aeroplane flies high. it has the original tracklist/order, is a beautiful box set, and is a better pressing than the original (which i also own).

The famous (within the bluegrass community anyway) Bluegrass band Hot Rize would alternate sets with their alter-egos Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, a kitschy country band.

While Hot Rize would perform in the traditional suitcoat style that many Bluegrass bands would wear, Red Knuckles wore lots of fringe and bright sateen shirts - he even had fringe on the neck of his guitar. Red Knuckles would also rag on Hot Rize for playing that "itchy scratchy" music - which was what the audience came to see.

Red Knuckles was damn entertaining, with excellent musicianship, humor and a willingness to try genres and do covers of other bands, something that the purists would wail and gnash their teeth if Hot Rize tried. Red Knuckles actually did a fake commercial a'la late night television for an album of rock and roll standards in a traditional country style (Not Shania, more like old Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard). The song that comes to memory when I reminisce was "Hey Joe" done to an upbeat country standard.

Of course, if you find that interesting, I highly recommend Luther Wright and the Wrongs song-by-song cover of Pink Floyd's "the Wall" Album done in a country/bluegrass style.

Yeah, I have a lot of their albums... Even their children's cd.

It's good stuff, but I have to be in the right mood. When I am in the mood, there's none better. I would have to say Combustication is my favorite album (partly because of DJ Logic's work). End of the World Party: Just In Case and Uninvisible are close behind that.

I have the first Radiolarians album. I thought it was really good.

I love Steven Wilson's King Crimson 5.1 remixes.

Pink Floyd's 30th Anniversary SACD of "Dark Side of the Moon" is the best 5.1 mixed album I've ever heard.

Also, NIN "Downward Spiral" is great.

exactly, i totally agree, but i feel that they make "limited" coppy's to show that the band dose in fact still have "hardcore" fans, or they just get kocky and think its all special and price it to fucking $500 or something (still pretty pissed that the smashing pumpkins:Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness remake is nearly $80 on vinyl, I MEAN LOOK AT THAT,AND IT'S NOT EVEN A LIMITED, OR SPECIAL EDITION COPPY!

You might want to keep an eye on this set from amazon.ca. The price has been fluctuating over the last few weeks, usually staying under or over $50. I've actually seen it hit $36 at one point. Right now its $48 with free shipping which is ok considering shipping from the states might cost more because its a box set. Good luck!

5 - 10 -15 - 20: The Pitchfork Edition

5 - Kanye West - The Life of a Graduated Heartbreak
We were quite mature at a young age, listening only to this long lost Yeezus album. And by "long lost" we mean "what we formulated in our minds how Kanye should sound." It doesn't exist. Don't try and find it. It was our first BNM label.

10 - Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
Yes, we admit it. We totally listened to this when we were kids. But the magazine only. We didn't listen to any of the actual SONGS. That would be ridiculous. We simply put the magazine on our record player and hit play.

15 - Arcade Fire - Funeral
Because why not?

20 - Taylor Swift - Red
We just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was a mistake. Don't stop reading our reviews because of it. Don't worry. We still are the hitmakers of the hipster world. You know you need us. We'll still be here everyday with our sesquipedalian lexicon and metaphors that fall apart if you really think about them. We'll continue to describe sounds with words like "tectonic" and "panoramic" and "wounded" and "dusty." It's just...we need some T-Swizzle every now and then in our lives too.

25 - Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Radiohead
We only listen to Radiohead in its purest form: unadulterated kids music. What better way to put your baby or you asleep? Besides listening to an actual Radiohead album. But really, Thom Yorke wishes he could be this soothing with his voice.

30 - The Pixies? Or, uh, Nick Cave? Oh wait, Dinosaur Jr. Uh... Animal Collective? Wait they've been around how long now? Since 2003? Really? What artist has only released one single EP? That's who we listen to now
We're still relevant.

u/I_ncident · 1 pointr/radiohead

Apparently this comes with stickers to fit onto a normal jewel case.
> It also has two pages of stickers to fit on a regular jewel case, which is a nice addition as cardboard cases are easy to damage.

A sample from Los Straitjackets's Christmas album.

Michael Bolton's Christmas album is surprisingly good (as is his live show - remember he was in a hair metal band in the 80s and early 90s before becoming a balladeer. The man can SHRED a guitar).

Frank Sinatra

Vince Guaraldi

Stevie Wonder

Elvis

Johnny Cash

Louis Armstrong

Oscar Peterson

Even Bob Schneider, though I don't recommend paying over $20 for the few songs that cd has on it.

Lastly, my absolute favorite Christmas 'song,' by Cary Grant. Enjoy and share. Here's the Amazon link

It seems to be a standard release but with limited stock, particularly at Hydeout. You could try your luck by placing an order there now and hopefully it'll be fulfilled as they're restocking it tomorrow (Dec 25) otherwise, you could always order it from the alternate retailers provided such as Amazon, HMV or CDJapan.

I read your comment and thought: "there are lots of commercially unknown orchestras with great recordings....". Then I went to the amazon page for the Beethoven collection pictured: http://amzn.com/B00012QMDG

Listen to the opening of Beet 5. Yuck. I'm not trying to be an elitist or anything. It just really really sucks even compared to other cheap CDs. Shit, you can get the entire 1963 Karajan Beethoven cycle used for about $15 on amazon: http://amzn.com/B000001GBQ

If you like classical music as background music while you work or whatever, fine. But if you want to hear it the way it's meant to be heard, you can do much better for the same amount of money.

EDIT:
I'll be constructive and recommend a few cheap and great recordings (buying used off amazon, nothing more than $5). Others might be able to do better....

One of my all time favorites to listen to start to finish. fantastic story throughout one day of 17 year old Kendrick.

If you end up enjoying Kendrick after this listen, To Pimp A Butterfly would be another great one to grab, throw in slight hint of Jazzy vibe into his mixing pot of sound with a different message throughout that album from Good Kid M.a.a.d City. was at a very low price on Amazon ...around 15? I believe a week ago but recently inflated to 27 recently but quality pressing on both.

I was pretty bummed out about it.

What's weird is that Pink Floyd seem to be the progenitors of a whole new subgenre of covers: Covers of entire albums. I have three.

  • Rebuild the Wall, by Luther Wright and the Wrongs, which is an astonishingly good bluegrass rendition;

  • Dub Side of the Moon, a reggae/dub take on DSOTM. Fun bit: the repeated song starting "Money" is a bong bubbling instead of a cash register.

    plus the Lips one.

So the preorder I placed in Februrary finally came through to deliver this absolute beauty to me today.

This vinyl set is amazing, both the records themselves and its packaging, and it instantly became the holy grail of my collection.

The set comes with five(!) red records, containing the entirety of the Fellowship of the Ring Soundtrack. Also included is a booklet with information on the recording of every single track, and what looks like a third of a poster of Middle Earth, foreshadowing a future release of the remaining two Soundtracks.

u/jb4647 · 1 pointr/vinyl

I think it is. I purchased the 2011 180grm edition in Dec before I knew about this one from MoFi.

I was able to notice a difference that was worth the extra $20. It's only 2 LPs rather than 5 so not really a big deal.

This will be the kind of album that I'll turn down the light, pour myself a drink and enjoy from my easy chair.

u/PaeroPwns · 24 pointsr/hiphopheads

u/checkerdamic · 1 pointr/vinyl

That is a pretty impressive reissue. I remember getting that album when I was 13 or 14 as a double CD. I will say that the $90+ price tag on Amazon put its definitively into the category of a very-big-fan-only release.

u/integrate-this · 6 pointsr/radiohead

My friend showed me this soon after I got my first Radiohead album. It was my introduction to so many of their songs!

I've always found that covers of Radiohead in different genres are really illuminating. Stripping away all of that Radiohead weirdness, you're always left with a brilliant melody. See also John Mayer's cover of Kid A and OK Computer lullabies.

u/matthank · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

I can't stand his TV shows or anything he writes...I am only interested in his vocal work. He was very good in Hellboy II: The Golden Army as Johann, the vapor guy in a suit.

Check out the Rockabye Baby! album. They did music-boxy arrangements of some of their classics. Love the No Surprises one especially.

u/barley_n_hops · 1 pointr/vinyl

I listen to my fair share of both. Just today, I picked up a Thelonious Monk album along with a used 4-disc compilation of Bach. My wife picked up a similar set of Tchaikovsky a few days ago. Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is on the way and I just picked up Stanley Turrentine's Pieces of Dreams last week for a few dollars.

The classical I put on quite a bit when I'm studying, the jazz is for relaxation and beer time. Not that it's related, but I'm also big into Sinatra and Bennett for my staring-at-the-wall time.

u/jdquinn · 2 pointsr/applehelp

Put in track numbers for each disc, disc numbers for the set, and check the box that says "Part of a compilation" for each song. Selecting multiple and editing the common info is your friend.

Edit: Don't forget to put the total number of tracks per disc (x of __) and same for the discs in the set (y of 3).

Is there a difference in sound between the 3LP and the 4LP currently available that makes the former more desirable? Or is it simply an issue of wanting an original pressing? I know the 2012 remaster had some bad quality issue, but from what I can tell most of that was fixed in 2014
