Yeah, I am using an S5 as a dedicated bike computer for years now - following chats, listening to music, recording rides via Strava, navigation via OsmAnd app and even using the same phone to control a drone, though I haven't tried that during a ride yet, lol.

> I've got an ancient S4 laying around

The issue with S4 is that it is NOT water/dust resistant. If you don't care and only going to be riding fair-weather, then sure - why not. It's right there, after all. I wouldn't, but I'm sure it would be fine if you are careful.

> But the S5 should be good against rain right?

Yep. I am riding all-weather, which includes storms, blizzards and everything in between. The phone holds up fine, though I don't use it on handlebars when it gets to -10C and below.

> So if I don't touch the screen but still have data on it. Or would the rain cause all kinds of ghost presses then?

Yeah, ghost inputs everywhere. You gotta keep the screen off in rain, unless you figure out a way to turn the digitizer off while leaving the display on. There's probably an app for that, especially for an S5. It's probably the most popular phone in regards to custom stuff developed for it.

Another way would be to cover the screen in one way or another, so it is not in contact with conductive water. I don't, so can't advice on best options there.

> Anyway, thanks again! I will most likely go this route since it's much cheaper and it's so much more versatile for navigation.

Indeed. It's basically a full-fledged computer with what it can do. Hell, I've even live-streamed my rides on occasion, while on VoIP with friends. See which dedicated bike "computer" can do that, ha!

I recommend this phone holder. Serves me well - got two for separate bikes at this point. My review is here. The second one I got is a bit more loose than I'd like (hard bumps shift the phone angle sometimes), but it hasn't been happening annoyingly often thus far, so I'd still say it's a great product, especially for the price.

And you're welcome! Always happy to talk about stuff like that.

_____

WARNING using a phone on the handlebars is going to damage its camera's focusing mechanism over time. Do not attach a phone you care about on your handlebars.

u/hiddenjumprope · 1 pointr/nexus5x

Awesome thanks! Yeah waterproofing is just a bonus at this point, but threw it out there in case there is something I didn't find in research. Some reviews have me a bit worried, but so far this looks like the best (and affordable) option for a case just for biking.

I am glad I came across the Quad lock, I was originally considering something like: https://amzn.com/B013MDDEDG but based on how it looks, I am not 100% sure about just how secure it is. The quad lock looks very secure. I also like how I can get a mount for driving too, that is more slim profile than what I currently use (I don't have my own car, I use Zipcar. I would like to keep a car phone holder in my bag so I don't have to worry about going home/remembering to grab it but it's pretty long and takes up a lot of space).

u/waywaw · 3 pointsr/Super73

If you are talking s1, this bag large size fits. I got a bell, designed well, small size fits. Phone mount. I'm getting these gravity wheelnutz for the front wheel (M10). I'm getting these water bottle holders, which seem cheap so can't vouch for them, but needed two and didn't yet put in a longer screw through the fender so I lost the universal mount. Highly recommend the suspension. And honestly, my favorite thing is very specifically for my dog. But, I had to take off the front light on my bike so that she could surf on this basket (there is a strap to connect to a harness so they are protected) tail wagged the whole trail. I too am getting the extended seats, because tall, so the rear just holds a bike lock for now. Should take a break after spending all that money, but going on a bike trip next week for vacation, so far, all super worth it. There are great accessory videos on youtube, the community there is small but wonderful.

Ingress player and Pokemon Go Beta tester here:

Want to catch pokemon and not die of the heat? Easy! Get on the lightrail. (Or in Tempe get on a free Orbit shuttle)
It's great for hacking Pokestops and for encountering pokemon in the wild but you won't be able to do gym battles unless you get off the lightrail but that's ok. You want to level up and get some good pokemon for the gym first anyways. You will want to use the gym later though. It's the only way to earn coins in game by "defending" gyms. You can also strengthen a teammates gym by leaving pokemon at it too. C ordinate with your nearby friends and choose the same color if you'll be traveling together or playing in the same area alot.

The higher your level the better Pokemon you will see.

Oh and don't start upgrading your low end pokemon yet. It wastes stardust. As you gain levels you find ones that are maxed out or almost maxed out. Just sell or "transfer" you lowest CP duplicates to get candies for that pokemon.

If you're gonna spend money on the game start with buying a few egg incubators. You only start with one.

You will most likely need an external battery pack as the game sucks up more juice than ingress did by far. There is a battery saver box in the options and you can turn the camera mode off which helps some but still sucks down the juice like crazy.

Got a bike? Makes catching em all easier! Put one of these on it to keep from dropping your phone, wrecking, or both.

WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING.

PUT A CASE ON YOUR PHONE.

BE NICE TO PEOPLE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. If they ask you to leave, leave. A gym on property doesn't give you the right to be there.

Check out a roam on amazon, has great reviews. Mine has worked great, and if you like it and leave a review and let them know they will send you an extra one. Also, I am fairly new and have not taken it out on anything super gnarly so if that’s the what you will be on thenthe all in one case mounts Mentioned may be the best bet. For now bough it’s holding my iPhone 10 very secure.

u/day1patch · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

Wow cool, I love the Montagues! Maybe you might want a phone holder so you can use your phone as a navigation device? Maybe not for commuting itself but I frequently find myself exploring new parts of town on lunch break and love some help with navigation if I don't exactly know how to get somewhere. We had a discussion on here a few days back, the one I linked is just the one I use. Nice bike!

u/R00zel · 6 pointsr/pokemongo

Just got myself this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LOA8DNQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1]

US Link: https://www.amazon.com/Vibrelli-Universal-Phone-Mount-Holder/dp/B010OPQVUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468182021&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bike+mount+phone&psc=1

Really great. The clamp is adjustable, comes with two silicone webs (US version comes with 3, count 'em, 3!), allows tilting and swivelling if you want to enable battery saver. Good price too.

I feel like cycling is the way to go. Quick travel between pokestops and gyms (I took 3 this evening!) , because you're on cycle paths or pavement it's much safer to stop, you don't need to look at the phone at all because the sound tells you when pokemon appear, plus it's great exercise! (My app says I burnt over 500 calories today.)

u/woofwoofdog99 · 5 pointsr/bicycling

Yes. It's this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OQJ5VPK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1453007063&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=tackform+bike&dpPl=1&dpID=41Kq80HRPSL&ref=plSrch

I have a nexus 6p now and it works perfect for it and before I had a nexus 6 which was even bigger and still held up. I love it and its only $10. Have done 50+ mi rides on super rough trails with it and never had problems. You just have to make sure you use the rubber webbing on the 4 corners and the phones not coming off (learned that one the hard way lol)

u/catbat272 · 2 pointsr/cycling

i recently got this vibrelli mount. it fits my iphone 5s in an otterbox case. if i were starting from scratch, i'd probably have gone with the quadlock, but already having a case, this has worked well for me so far and seems to hold the phone pretty securely. (you can double up on the elastic bands for extra security, which seems like overkill on the road but i probably will do it next time i ride some trails). i can't speak for durability since i've only had it a week. if anything on it broke, i'd think it would be the bands, which you get three of.

eta: i got my mount mostly for maps. for music, another option would be a bluetooth speaker, which would also give you better sound quality. you can keep the phone in a pocket or saddle bag. i don't have one, but have been eyeing one that fits in a water-bottle holder.

u/ArmadaZero · 9 pointsr/ElectricScooters

Ok...didn't realize I had to add a comment to add text to an image post. Anyway...

Long story short: first time I rode, I slipped and fell and had nasty road rash. The ignition on my scooter was fucked and I was in recovery for about 2 weeks.

Photos of my injuries when they were fresh, click at your own risk:

http://imgur.com/a/tMoHLhf

Here we are weeks after, everything has healed completely except for my shoulder and wrist. I sprained the shit out of it apparently. I bought some gear to keep me protected and this is what I use:

After doing some errands on the scooter today, two things I've realized: riding for a while really takes a toll on your legs, mostly calves and your hands really cramp up after a while (3+ hours). When I had the accident, I was going 20mph and while I was riding today, I realized why I fell. The speed never went down because with the Emove cruiser, if you hold the throttle for a while, it automatically activates cruise control. I figured out you can just turn it off by pressing the throttle twice but still, better late than never. Also I got a little too confident and went to the second mode instead of just staying on the first. I rode today strictly on the first mode and everything went smoothly. My only complaint is how stupid hot it gets where I live and I was drenched in sweat by the end of the day

Edit: I forgot to mention the smaller things I've attached to the scooter

I wanted to say thank you everyone for your ideas. Some of the stands suggested are things I never would have thought of. For now I have a cheap iPhone mount (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010OPQVUS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Been playing around with TrainerRoad too and really like it. I like the portability of an iPad, which is what I'm leaning towards for now. If I find a better place in the house that is more permanent, I'll probably do the AppleTV and monitor thing. Appreciate all the help!

u/finishingmycoffee · 1 pointr/MotoUK

I bought one of these (you'll find it cheaper than amazon) Givi S957B Waterproof Smart Phone Holder For Motorcycle Handlebar iPhone/Galaxy https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B010E68GIW/

It clips in with a reassuring click, the angle is easily adjustable but it doesn't move around at motorway speed (my bike has a screen if it makes a difference). It also has a Velcro strap that wraps round the handlebar as a failsafe.

Easy to remove at petrol stations and has a hole for your charger lead. It also has a waterproof cover.

I normally spend hours researching things before buying the cheapest tat available :o) . Not sure what convinced me to spend a bit more on this one, but I've been pleased with it.

u/09RaiderSFCRet · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

I love this mount, it holds my iPhone 7 Plus without any difficulty. Very secure. Easy to mount and remove without any tools. On the plus side it looks good too.

u/dirtyoldduck has really sound advice. Brakes and transmission for safety, the rest for peace of mind.

I installed this on a bike a few years ago to charge a GPS and was really happy with the results. You could combine it with this and have an affordable total solution.

EDIT: Formatting

u/holyshiznoly · 1 pointr/MotoXPure

Just got this one. Only used it a few hours but it seems fine. You really have to stretch the webbing to make it fit, but the upside of that is that it seems pretty secure.

u/Simply_Ryan · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Just go with a handle bar mount like this one. I bought it for my Iphone 6s Plus with an otterbox case and it works fantastic, and perfect for changing songs or checking texts on long rides haha

https://www.amazon.com/Roam-Universal-Premium-Phone-Motorcycle/dp/B01LWDCSIZ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496216064&sr=8-3&keywords=iphone+bike+mount

u/lizzim280 · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I've used a nav before, but I honestly found it to be more distracting than helpful. That's just me. How about this one? It's not waterproof but you can stuff into a waterproof case like this. You want one that's quick and easy to use, no unnecessary gimmicks. Also, have you tried using your phone's nav?

u/60PercentLeft · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

This isn't the one I bought, but it looks pretty similar. I reckon anything that clamps to the bars (not with any sort of quick release) and has redundant security for the phone would work. I've taken mine off-road and do some spirited riding with it.

u/GlasseKannon · 1 pointr/OnyxMotorbikes

There’s probably something better out there but this didn’t require me to use a special case or anything and I’d pretty sturdy. I do have to occasionally fiddle with the rubber straps as they can brush the power/volume buttons on the XS Max.

u/Vodapo · 1 pointr/MotoUK

I believe your phone is IP68 rated so you don't really need a waterproof case/holder for it.

I got this yesterday for my iPhone 7. Cheap, easy and intuitive to fit (took me 5 minutes without instructions) and seems like good quality, although that's TBA.

u/kalleina · 1 pointr/pokemongo

I use a Widras one that is amazing -> link

I have a One Plus 2 phone with a case that I use with it and its been really good so far in being able to securely hold my phone while biking around.

u/w32blaster · 1 pointr/MotoUK

I tried a few phone mounts and Quad Lock was the best in my opinion. I would recommend taking this mount with this RAM extension They have ready smartphone cases, but if you can't find a case for your phone, you could take universal one and any hard case for your smartphone you prefer. Very good quality and very handy

I recommend Roam's offering. I have a G5 Plus too and it's a really good fit with the largest strap.

u/atechnicnate · 1 pointr/bicycling

This one fits almost every phone and mounts super easy. I personally own one and my wife rides with her phone in there all the time. It's solid and you can probably slide a battery pack in under the rubber part.

u/letstalkaboutrocks · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I ordered something similar. The reviews were pretty good and it was only $22 shipped. I actually only need the USB charger as of right now, but may want a power outlet at some point in the future. Hopefully this will hold up!

u/marshmallowwisdom · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

I returned the TaoTronics and the Roam handlebar mounts. I did like how the TaoTronics model had a more secure cradling mechanism, but I didn't feel confident that either of them would last more than a couple months. I also took a look at the Cycway mount, which looks pretty solid. I might give that one a try soon.

u/anjariasuhas · 1 pointr/boston

My best bet was my [phone mount] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013MDDEDG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but the transponder is not wide enough to stay in place. I was thinking about the Cortech bag with the front window too! Does it work well? But that's another 100 $ that I could spend in other gear, so I'm not too sure. My last resort option is to get one of those iPhone running cases and put my transponder in it.
EDIT: And about the groups, that's precisely the kind I'm trying to avoid. There's a time and place for a wheelie but a group ride/ middle of busy street is not it. I'm looking for people to ride the twisties with, get out of the city to enjoy the summer while there's a little left!

u/cantBeKaren · 1 pointr/pelotoncycle

I bought this one, works great. I also use it for my remote control for my fan!

u/Blue_J0K3R · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

A lot of people use RAM mounts, but I went out and purchased a Roam Mount. Unbelievably reliable, incredibly durable, absolutely sturdy and pretty inexpensive at $16. I've had it for about 4-5 years on a naked bike, which has no fairings (obviously since it's a naked bike) or windscreen. Wether you're cruising at 45 or 85, you'll feel confident in the product. I've rode as fast (and slow) as the next man and have had absolutely zero issues with it becoming loose or anything.

Edit: I've used the Roam mount with an iPhone as well as the larger Galaxy Note 9, so phone size doesn't matter. It'll fit!

u/Slenderloli · 3 pointsr/TheSilphRoad

A phone bike mount will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Makes playing ingress a lot more fast paced and fun! I imagine it will make this game fantastic too!

Just started using this

Seems good so far. Holds my HTC M8 with an Ottorbox case on it. Has the cheapish lil spring loaded clamps for the sides and then uses the silicon pull-over the corner thing to hold it in place.

I've tried a lot of cell phone mounts. This one is my favorite so far, it's rock solid and quick to get the phone in and out.

I've been using this 18650-cell flashlight on my bike for almost a year now. It's bright as hell, with decent battery life and easy to swap batteries if you need extended range.

If anyone else would like to do something similar, but don't want to risk their phone, I recently bought a Vibrelli Universal Bike Phone Mount Holder and it works very well.

I've been using this one since 2016:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010OPQVUS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works great. I have tried several others - this was one that you can get tight enough the phone won't move around even when riding on mountain bike trails. It gets used several times a week, and still functions like new. It came with a couple of extra bands, but I've never had to replace that part.

Someone else mentioned quad lock, I don't think those were around when I bought this one, otherwise I may have considered it. This is much cheaper, but I see the quad lock also has rain protection which is a big plus.

I got this one couple weeks ago :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y38MF3K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looked like the safest option for my 1000$ Pixel 2 phone. Would have cancelled the project of getting a phone mount otherwise.

Edit : got a rubber case also, feared of cracking the phone's glass as this thing can squeeze pretty tight.

I just bought this:

Roam Universal Premium Bike Phone Mount for Motorcycle - Bike Handlebars, Adjustable, Fits iPhone X , 8 | 8 Plus, 7 | 7 Plus, iPhone 6s | 6s Plus, Galaxy S7, S6, S5, Holds Phones Up To 3.5" Wide https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWDCSIZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_j5L4AbPWZC720

I haven't tested it yet, but so far it seems to hold the phone really well. I have a Spigen Tough Armor case, and fits the X-Frame just fine.

u/mrmadagascar · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

I have this guy in matte black. Has an off-switch!

Installation is extremely easy.

u/Sqeaky · 6 pointsr/pokemongo

I bought two of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010OPQVUS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One for my cell phone and one for this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017R8VREU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The light on the battery pack was better than the light on my bike so I replaced it.

u/o0adam0o · 3 pointsr/TheSilphRoad

I ride to work everyday and agree with everything.

This is my mount.. Its a bit expensive but we'll worth it: Vibrelli Universal Bike Phone Mount Holder. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010OPQVUS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ZSv2xbHBESDPJ

u/blu3bird17 · 1 pointr/cycling

Currently I have ordered.

  1. Front light
  2. Multi Tool
  3. Phone Mount
  4. Bike Lock

When I go the the LBS to pick up my bike, i'll bet getting a CO2 pump as well.

EDIT: I only plan on bringing my lock if i'm going on longer rides not @ my local park. If i'm not on my bike it will be in my home.
u/kyzen · 1 pointr/bicycling

It's actually pretty hideous and quite bulky; but I have one on a number of our bikes (used to use our phones for Strava, before we Garmin'd up), including a couple of mountain bikes, and I like the protection that the case part provides for those times I send the thing flying off and tumbling down a hill... so I'm willing to put up with the ugliness.

Also, they seem to change the model slightly sometimes without really indicating it on the Amazon page. I received a couple last December that had a weird ball-and-joint mount that raised the phone case like 3 inches off my bars, instead of the simple clamp style mount I have in use in the picture here. Same phone case part though.

All that said, here's the link

I have a similar Trek bike and ended up buying this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071D8R678/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_mZUyzbEPD0ZBV

There's a bunch of different brands of identical mounts available on Amazon. I have mine mounted directly to my stem. It works great, but I still plan on buying a cycle computer later on.

You can also buy an adapter for that mount to put on your phone case, search for "blendr" on the Trek store.

u/savingprivatebrian15 · 1 pointr/grubhubdrivers

My Grubhub bag is the largest one I’ve seen anyone carry, and it has the straps that can be used as backpack straps. I found a weird looking cup holder type thing at Goodwill that I was able to zip tie to my passenger backrest, and it works ok. The shape of the cup holders is a bit odd so larger drinks tend to be vibrated and squished until they almost crack, but I almost never use it for deliveries because of that.

If you can find a decent cupholder and solid way to attach it, you should have no problem. Get a phone mount/charger combo that wires right to the battery ($20 on Amazon, works great for me) and a short cord for your phone, and you’ll be gold.

I use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y38MF3K

I enjoy it because you can tighten it down and then pull on it and say "nope, that ain't going anywhere". It is like a mini version of transporting the bike on a hitch mount.

I use a samsung galaxy s5 though. If you have one of those small tablets people are calling phones nowadays you may want to go with the RAM.

If you're going to be playing while riding on a bike, I highly suggest one of these, makes playing so much more convenient - https://www.amazon.com/Vibrelli-Universal-Phone-Mount-Holder/dp/B010OPQVUS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1475174422&sr=8-2

First of all, congratulations -- love it in red.

I had an Yamaha MT-125 until very recently, it's a brother bike to yours, so same dimensions basically.
I bought a JDC waterproof cover (not sure if Rain or Ultimate Rain though) -- very decent and sturdy, definitely waterproof and has holes either end to loop a chain/disk lock through.

I got a Givi phone mount, on the more expensive side, but definitely not flimsy, overall quality is what you pay for here. The only somewhat annoying thing to mention is that to get it absolutely waterproof, they include a kind of an additional sheath you have to slide over the holder when it's really pissing it down -- normally it'll probably be water-resistant. But hey ho, should have no issue carrying it around with you.

I used a pretty cheapy alarm from these guys, but on a lower sensitivity setting it does the job really well.

Some people use bike mounts for their phones. It's similar to one you would attach to your dashboard on your car, except it goes in the middle of your handlebars on your bike. Here's an example.

I would be careful if you use one while biking on bumpy terrain though, they can spit your phone right out if you shake 'em around too much.

u/urvize · 1 pointr/ElectricScooters

I use these for mine and my wife's M365:

I have them on my motorcycles as well and they work very well. Very solid and they don't rattle when not in use. Can't say the same about some of the cheaper phone mounts on Amazon. Ram X-Grip is another alternative, but I can't stand by it due to hitting a large bump on my motorcycle and seeing my phone go flying. My fault since I opted to not use the rubber straps that came with it and relied solely on the claw.

u/johnjust · 1 pointr/pokemongo

You could always get a sturdy waterproof case and a handlebar/stem mount. I've taken some falls with a similar setup and not had any problems. Also, now you've got a giant ass cycling computer!
