  1. I have both a standard coat and long haired GSD. My short haired girl actually sheds more, and it is bad, especially when she's blowing her coat, which happens once or twice a year. The reason our coatie doesn't seem to shed as much is because the undercoat shedding gets caught in the top layer. So not as many dropped hairs, but he requires more grooming in general to keep him from getting matts. I have one of these lightweight vacuums and it is truly amazing. We have hardwood floors and a quick once over with this over the floors and couch really keeps the floating hairs to a minimum. But if shedding is a deal breaker, definitely don't look into GSDs.

  2. Dear god, yes, they have energy. I can't wear out my girl. We can hike for 3 miles (our normal route) and she's still bouncing and ready to go again. She's only 2 years old, but I've yet to find her limit. This is definitely a good exercise companion. But at the same time, they can come in and be complete couch potatoes every evening too. Both of mine have a good "off" switch that I've yet to find in other breeds.

  3. We have two cats and two GSDs. My 2 year old who was exposed to cats from puppyhood does very well with them, but she still has a high prey drive. If one takes off running in front of her, she's going to chase it, but only for the thrill of the chase, not to harm it. My older boy, we adopted when he was already 8 years old, and he never had any exposure to cats. He's been a bit of trouble with them. It's been 8 months now and he isn't aggressive anymore, but doesn't really listen when we tell him to back down either. That being said, I keep a baby gate up to our bedroom, so the cats can jump it and have a safe place if the dogs are messing with them too much. I think if you get a puppy, and your cats are already used to large dogs, you shouldn't have a big issue at all.

  4. In my experience with this breed, aggression can come from two places. Poor breeding and poor socialization. Both of those are avoidable. First, look for a reputable breeder who cares about the traits they breed into their dogs, and not just the looks or money. Because aggression is NOT a desirable trait in GSDs, and any dog exhibiting the slightest signs of aggression or unnecessary fear should not be bred. They should be approachable and fearless, but never aggressive. Meet with your breeder, and meet their dogs. Do your research. On the flip side, what you do as an owner during their first couple years of life also has a ton to do with how your dog will turn out. With the proper socialization and training they are wonderful animals! I have two children under the age of three and both my dogs absolutely adore them and fawn over them, even when my toddler pulls on her tail and tries to ride her my GSD has never, not once, shown fear or aggression towards them.

They are wonderful family dogs, and extremely loyal towards their "packs." We've even done some schutzhund training with my girl, and she has never outwardly shown aggression to any stranger, just a calm alertness that I absolutely love. I know from her training what she is capable of physically, but she 100% takes cues from me. If I'm comfortable, she's comfortable, if I'm nervous, she's alert. We've never had issues with new people coming into our home, if my husband or I accept the person, so do the dogs.

We used to live out of suitcases (due to Mom's employment, not this, this sucks and I'm so sorry they're going through this)! Small portable game systems are a must for kids, I don't know if that's something that they made it out with, but they sure made our lives better. I would have killed for a Kindle, but even old systems from a second hand shop or a yard sale (sometimes you have to leave them behind anyway, it's hurts less if they weren't expensive) would probably be welcome. Phone cards, even just one a piece for emergencies, are incredibly helpful. We sometimes used blow up furniture, they don't often last long, but it's fun, it's portable, and it's yours. Decorative throws serve multiple purposes: as blankets, you can hang them for decor that helps the heating bill, and then you can wrap your stuff in them when you leave again. A camera, so that you can focus on new happy memories (not trying to encourage repression, but it really makes forgetting the bad parts easier later when you have concrete proof of the good ones). Stuff for a luxurious bath every now and then would be 'frivolous' enough for a gift, and it helps with the mental health, as well as technically being practical (everyone needs to be clean!).

> She also has no car

Is there any form of public transportation where they are? You could spring for a month's bus/tram/equivalent pass.

As for the organizing, there are the closets that hang, or the collapsible stand alone wardrobe. There's pop up storage bins, or this hoarder enabling abomination that I may be buying myself now. These things are like suitcases you never have to unpack.

I actually have this vacuum, it works awesome on hard floors and gets the job done on carpets if you keep at it, it's fairly quiet for a vacuum, and comes apart for getting hard to reach areas/fixing when you sucked up something it shouldn't have eaten. You could toss in a few small office/kitchen sized trashcans and liners to match, a lot of people can stay clean if they have arms reach access to a bin, but never think about buying extra bins.

You said that she has some cookware, but I'm going to add this here anyway. We always left behind the measuring spoons and cups, then wouldn't buy more until we absolutely had to. We often lived in hotels and lived off of whatever could be microwaved or grilled on the hibatchi (note, that was an example, don't spend more than $20 on one), and a good set of microwavable dishes makes a world of difference as to what you can make. Spices to dress up canned veggies are also indispensable and often out of budget, even if it's just some Mrs. Dash mixes, seasoning salt, garlic powder.

Lastly though, I want to commend you. You're an awesome friend. The world would be a better place with more of you. Knowing that someone out there has your back can mean everything when you have nothing. Good luck to your friend and her son, I hope your care package makes their day.

u/mouthie · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

First of all you are awesome. You are the epitome of what this sub is about and I'm honored to call you a friend.

1- This would be the item I'd choose so that I can shampoo furniture and carpet. Furniture mainly since Liz still had "accidents".

2-This was difficult for me as I love all three of my children equally. However I will choose my youngest, Liz to write about, simply because of the way she has changed our family for the better.

The day Elizabeth was born was one of the happiest and saddest days of my life. When we learned she was born disabled with down syndrome, our hearts were broken. But that quickly changed when my doctor said these simple words to me, "All you can do now, is just love her" These words have resonated with me for the past 16 years. Liz has been through hell and back. She's had open heart surgery, three cataract surgeries, suffers from asthma, allergies and a thyroid condition. You'd certainly never know any of that by meeting her. She has taught my family that love is all that matters.

There isn't a single day that goes by that I don't thank God for blessing me with this wonderful gift. I would never change her for any amount of money. Every single day she brings us all laughter, joy and smiles. Even the simplest of things are celebrated. Speaking a full sentence, working the remote, dressing yourself, all huge celebrations at this house. She has taught my family tolerance, acceptance, and advocacy for differences. She touches the hearts of most people she meets. There isn't a store or public place in my town we can enter without someone running up to her asking for a hug. She gives it willingly of course! We honestly forget that she's "different", many times we wonder why are people looking at us, then suddenly realize, oh they're checking out Liz and that's okay!! We want others to be exposed to differences and see that she is just like everyone else and deserves the same rights as you and I. This is what she's doing for my family and my community. I've seen giant high school football players from her high school stop dead in their tracks at the grocery store to run over and say hi and give her a high five or a hug. We don't want nor need sympathy, we've won the lottery with this girl!!

3- here is my attempt at drawing Liz lol

4-#373

5- I had a wonderful day today. I generally do most days despite bad things happening. I sure try to anyway :)

I purchased the 'pivot' black and decker off amazon about a year ago. It's good for cleaning the car, crumbs, quick pick ups. The battery lasts about 15 mins of straight use, but I only ever drain the battery when cleaning the car. I really like mine as a supplement to the big vacuum. It's designed well, the battery works, and it is a great tool for around the house. Also, cleaning the filter is easy, you just take it apart, wash it, and let it dry.

The one you have a link to is pretty much the same thing so I'm sure it's just as good, maybe slightly less effective if it doesn't have the brush attachment.

Robot Vacuums. They're life changing. The cheap-ish $150-$200 models don't even perform significantly worse.

I recently bought this one, and while It's got some issues that prevent it from being a 5-star gadget, it's still pretty great. It fits under my couch and usually finds its way home, but it seems to be in a deep sleep when it's scheduled to start cleaning, so I have to trigger it manually. Most robovac reviews focus on the strength of any given vacuum, which is a factor, but less so than for an upright or canister because it runs every day. I think you can probably shop around and find a better deal on it if you order from China.

I'm still running a couple of Neato XV-21s as well, and really like it, powerful suction, a backlit screen and better scheduling than the one above. Neato robotics has excellent customer support, too. They replaced a battery on a refurbished, just-out-of-warranty XV-21 at no cost to me.

A few caveats: neither type handles rug fringe well, and corners stay dirty where neither robot can reach, and floor edges stay dirty with the XV-21, but that should be fixed in newer, more expensive models with rotary side brushes. They both tend to wind long hair around the beater brush and need to be manually cleaned. Still, they pay for themselves in man-hours saved from floor cleaning.

tl;dr: I'm apparently a robot vacuum enthusiast. Who knew?

I have two cats and all hard flooring, on a single level. I bought a “cheap” robot vacuum and it has changed my life. It is a Ecovacs Deebot N79S; at the time it cost 300$ full price but I got it on sale for 150$ (during US Black Friday). It is designed for hard floors, a small place (my apartment is maybe 700sqft) and to deal with pet hair. It has a small hepa filter.

There are many similar models now of varying price ranges, that are designed for low floors and to deal with pet hair. I have to clear the floors before running it (pick up toys, small area rugs, etc.) and empty the capture bin after each use, but it’s amazing. Honestly it does a better job than I would with a push vacuum, because it gets under the bed and into small corners where the dust bunnies are. It has a few different modes, and can be run from a smart phone over wifi, but I haven’t really bothered with that. The best thing is I can start it up, and leave the house. I run mine 1-2 times a week.

If you want a standard vacuum, it’s important that it has a hepa filter to capture pet dander.

Also, as you’ve noticed sweeping is almost pointless - a Swiffer dry cloth mop is much better at actually clearing the pet hair from floors. You can make your own cloth mops, and they work pretty well if you are opposed to the disposable mops.

Thanks. Used to be a store in my town but unfortunately the closest one is about an hour and a half away now. I did some googling and I see what you're talking about, but I'm like 99.999% sure this model never had them. This vacuum is 15 years old. I found the base plate for this one and you can see they don't have the bars: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.picclickimg.com%2Fd%2Fl400%2Fpict%2F173964900920_%2FOreck-XL-Base-Bottom-Plate-Parts-for-Oreck.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpicclick.com%2FOreck-XL-Part-Bottom-Cover-Roller-Brush-142895625759.html&docid=wtMVw33Yq0oAgM&tbnid=vHw2ldYLB0laqM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwjbm8m03-rkAhVQnJ4KHfI9DkEQMwijAigBMAE..i&w=400&h=267&itg=1&bih=766&biw=1440&q=XL260HH%20oreck&ved=0ahUKEwjbm8m03-rkAhVQnJ4KHfI9DkEQMwijAigBMAE&iact=mrc&uact=8

Anyway, thanks again. Sorry if I came off like I'm questioning your expertise. I was mainly just curious for curiosity sake. I'm sure the roller needs changed. I may actually just buy a new one rather than try to perform maintenance on this one. Looks like Amazon has this one for $150: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NDNV18/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_J0RIDbHJZHDD1 Would you recommend that one? I figure if it lives half as long as my current one, that'll be great!

u/st0n3wa1l · 2 pointsr/vacuums

I own a vacuum store and I would say to stay away from it. Miele canisters are known to have electrical problems and the parts for repair are astronomical in price. Honestly you can probably get your vacuum back into good working shape if you check for clogs, put new filters in, and change the belts. If you really want a new vacuum I would recommend a Panasonic vacuum.

This here is a good one if you don't use the vacuum on your barefloors, http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Platinum-Upright-MC-UG502-61-4714-02/dp/B008MAWFQ2.

Here's my absolute favorite one, http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-UG729-Upright-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B008LA4F0M/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1457968840&sr=1-1&keywords=mc-ug729. I know it goes way up in price but the suction on it will beat any vacuum out there. This is also their quiet force series which is great if you vacuum at night or live in an apartment.

Here is a really good canister by them. It's the canister version of their quiet force vacuum. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-CG917-OptiFlow-Canister-Cleaner/dp/B005JTHQXQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1457969162&sr=1-4&keywords=panasonic+bare+floor. Don't be fooled by the price, I actually got ripped off by them because they would sell me the vacuum for resale higher than the price they sold it online. This is the canister I use in my house.

Stick with a bagged vacuum also, they have much better suction and are cheaper to run overtime. Good Luck

Ok, so for my whole life I wanted a cordless Dyson vacuum. They’re about $500 but amazing because you literally just charge it and it’s good to go for a couple of days of serious vacuuming. But once I got my Dyson, I realized that it can’t pick up a lot of dirt because it has such a small compartment. Also, it gets stuck on long carpet and doesn’t do well if you have pets.

But, around the same time I got my Dyson, my Mom got the Shark cordless vacuum which runs at about $80. She has rheumatoid arthritis, so vacuuming really hurts her hands. This vacuum was perfect for her and I wish I had gone with it instead of my Dyson. The rollers and dirt compartment are so much better than the Dyson, and it rolls easily on all types of carpet. My mother has three cats and never has to unblock the roller. So this is my definite recommendation.

Things you need on your wishlist: for good baths, for a healthy and satisfyingly sweet snack, and for the best game known to man. Trust me, that last game is one of the most creative games I have ever played.

I summon /u/denygfx because they are a dirty bird who needs to be punished!

The household chore I hate the most is doing laundry because it’s really like three chores in one (sorting, timing, and folding).

u/LeftMySoulAtHome · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I seriously scaled up to the iRobot Bravva. It's not a scrubber like the Scooba, so it's not as expensive. It does a better job than I do with a swiffer.

It's still spendy, but it was a great investment. All of my rooms are laminate and tile, except one room with carpet. It's really quiet and does a great job. We named him Mr. Sparkle. hehe.

I also have a Roomba, which was another great investment. They run overnight while we're all asleep. As a disabled lady, these are my favorite tools. ;)

u/partisan98 · 7 pointsr/starterpacks

Ever given robot vacuums like roomba a try? I picked up a very highly rated budget one for $150 and most of the reviews are from dog owners saying how much it helps stop dog hair from getting everywhere.

Honestly its my favorite home item, i recommend getting one to all my friends and i bought one for my parents. Its great, you just set it on your phone to run however often you want and just come home and dump the container. It also makes you keep your floors clear because if you leave jackets on the floor it will drive onto them and get stuck. Its honestly amazing how much cleaner it keeps your place.

I got a Deebot N79s refurbished from amazon for about $130 but the new ones run around $200 for the best budget ones.
While reading way to many reviews it basically comes down to these two in the budget category.

Deebot N79s $211.97. It has 3.9 Stars out of 5 with 4,818 reviews. It is quiet enough you can run it in the same room while watching TV. I got this one because of the App support means i can easily control it from my phone and i can tell to to run whenever even if i am not home.

The other budget option is
RoboVac 11S $239.99 but also has a $20 of coupon available. It has 4.4 out of 5 with 6,677 reviews.

Both of these can be scheduled to run whenever you want it to. I have mine set to automatically run Monday and Friday when i am at work but i live alone with no pets, you can easily set it to run every day. Also it will fit under a lot of your furniture and pull so many dust bunnies out its incredible.

u/sqweexv · 2 pointsr/OldSchoolCool

We got this one, though it looks like they have updated their lineup since then. Not sure what the equivalent would be now.

IIRC, the "Cat and Dog" model was exactly the same, just with extra accessories and an LED headlight (and a different color). The Jazz added the headlight and the HEPA filter as standard. The only thing ours doesn't have that can't be added in was the headlight.

We didn't see a ton of need for an LED headlight and the extra accessories w/ the Cat and Dog didn't feel necessary. We figured we'd just buy the better filter for ours if we decided we needed it.

As for hard floors, we don't use it as often as we could. We sweep them most of the time, but we will use the vacuum once in a while as well. Does a great job when we use it. Just turn the dial down to lower it and turn the brush off. My wife loves how easy it is to maneuver. You can turn the whole thing by twisting the handle. It also lays down virtually all the way, so you can scoot it under things that our old vacuum couldn't dream of getting under. It's a little heavier than some of the cheap vacuums, but it's made better. It's also much quieter.

The only thing that doesn't really work as well as one would hope is the air flow indicator. There's a little window on the front and it's supposed to indicate how full the bag is based on airflow. When the colored (sort of an orange/red color) marker fills the window, it means the bag is full or filters are clogged. Ours never goes past half way. It gets to half and sits there, even when the bag is 100% full. Not really a big deal now that I know about it. Just have to check it manually once in a while. Apparently this is a quirk that can happen with pets. The hair in the bag still allows enough air flow to move through the bag that the meter doesn't read it as full. The whole thing is designed around air flow.

I got a Miele S7 https://www.amazon.com/Miele-S7210-Upright-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B003YIXK2A/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1483102538&sr=1-1&keywords=Miele+S7+Twist as I, as well, did not want to pay a grip for Miele. Been rocking it for like 4 years. It did clog once and my wife's solution was to get SuperMAD and go out and buy a Dyson as a replacement. $300 Dyson to fix a clog...sounds legit right? I get home and in 20 seconds remove a rogue ball of dog hair and she chooches like day one. 2 weeks later, the Dyson clogged the same way. :) Needless to say, the wife no longer gripes about vacuums and uses the Miele like 9:1 over the Dyson.

The S7 is super quiet and we have 2 cats and a Newfoundland with 75% carpet and 25% wood/tile. The only issue with Miele is you must take it to a store for repair if something breaks...they sell ZERO parts to anyone anywhere unless you get super lucky and find used on eBay. Our hose ripped and a replacement was like $100, so I epoxy'd it and found one via luck on eBay for $40.

Highly recommend the Xiaomi Mai Gen 2/Roborock S50. Not only is it cheaper than the Roomba, it cleans better and more methodically. Check out the COMMENTS section here: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-robot-vacuum/

It is on amazon for $400 after a coupon now: https://smile.amazon.com/Roborock-Robotic-Connectivity-Navigating-Capacity/dp/B0792BWMV4

I have one and so far it has been amazing, it cleans thoroughly and has zero issues. The dust bin is always full when I empty it after the occasional cleaning, meaning it does its job really well. However, the company also does Facebook giveaways and promos - I got mine for $350 because of a discount code that I won by participating in a promo. For value AND efficiency, I really can't recommend this enough. But, do your own research as well - this is a big purchase. Don't just go with a Roomba because it's popular - the wirecutter article and comments, especially, are a good place to start reading.

The iLife A4 is by far the best bang for the buck. I have two for less than the price of others l, and it works fantastic. Most of my friends and family now own the same model after witnessing mine perform. Random pattern clean, but it rarely struggles to get back to base and has a max clean mode that is not loud at all - with great suction. We have pets, and this thing is always full of small hair particles. It generally goes over the same spot numerous times, which results in a deeper clean.

I have a Golden Retriever and two cats with all hardwood floors. Fur management is a big part of my life.

First of all, be glad you have wood floors because once you are setup, wood and tile floors are so much easier to keep clean of pet hair.

Second, I'm sure others will mention this but any fur you proactively remove from your animals by brushing is fur that you will not have to clean up. My life has been much easier since I convinced myself of this fact. Brush, brush brush. Brush everyday. It's good bonding time between you and your dog and it's easier than vacuuming. If you can't get a loaf of bread sized hairball off your Golden everyday in the summer, you need a different brush. Also, consider the nuclear option. I used to have my previous Golden shaved every May. By late October, he would have all his fur back more beautiful than ever. He particulalry hated the heat and we saw a big change in his activity level every time we shaved him. Now, shaving Goldens is about as controversial as you can get in the dog world but it worked fine for me.

Tools - I had been considering picking up a $500.00 Dyson "Animal" vacuum. I tend to wear out every vacuum I buy within a year so was going to go for quality. One thing that bothers me about the Dyson (and the Roomba) is that it has a spinning brush. Spinning brushes are the Achilles heel of pet vacuums and really aren't needed for a wood floor. I stumbled on the vacuum linked below and bought it a few weeks ago. Very highly reviewed for pet hair. No spinning brush. The machine is optimized specifically for pet hair and works awesome. $65 bucks.

Look at what your job is. You're a repairman, so of course you're going to see a lot of broken Dysons. It's a super popular brand. You've seen hundreds of unhappy people, but that's because the millions of happy Dyson owners have never had to call on you. No mass market product has a 100% satisfaction rate these days - production isn't perfect, things break, etc.

Your entire perspective is heavily biased against popular brands. I'm not sure how you don't realize that. User reviews are worth a lot more:

http://www.amazon.com/Dyson-DC41-Animal-Complete-Upright/product-reviews/B008SG536E

And the amount of 4-5 star reviews look pretty damn good. And I've had zero issues. And other people I know with Dysons are all very happy as well, which is a large part of why I bought one in the first place.

> if it is mostly tile I would definitely take a look at the braava jet.

I'm in the market for a roomba or something similar. This is the first I've heard about the Braava Jet, but I haven't done a ton of research. I saw one on Amazon for $240 (the 380t model).

We've got dogs that shed, our main floor where this would be used is tile and hardwood (except two bedrooms that are carpeted, remaining bedrooms / rooms are hardwood).

What would you suggest for someone looking to clean up the dog hair and would prefer something that could do a "mid-week" mopping? (I'm expecting that I'll still have to mop the tile by hand once a week, unless they're that good).

NOTE: I'd rather get something that works great on the hardwood / tile, even if it means skipping the two carpeted rooms.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

u/refugefirstmate · 2 pointsr/dogs

Aside from all the suggestions that have been made, two more: a robot vacuum and if you have hard floors, an electric mop.

I'm in TX. We have six dogs (mostly pits) who are indoor-outdoor at will. Their yard is half a fenced, wooded acre. From the beginning of October to the middle of January it rained torrents every other day. Onto clay that is well beyond absorbing more water. We're at the top of a hill and there are still ponds of water. And the amount of (thankfully, gray not red) clay six active dogs will bring into the house in a day....well, I think it topped out at about 2 cups. They'd come in with virtual platform shoes of clay on their feet. And the dust..OMG the dust. As fine as photocopier toner.

Especially as I'm what the Brits call "house proud" (and former OCD cleaner), I was about at my wits' end until I bought the two aforementioned gadgets. The deebot runs 4x a day, and I now only mop every 3-4 days.

It's like I got my house back. Now the dogs are nothing but fun for me.

Note that the mop (which I got in cordless form, new on ebay for $125) is not a steam mop; instead, it squirts cleaner on the floor and then immediately vacuums it up, like a carpet cleaner does. Best thing since wi-fi, I swear.

You can also get velcro belly-bands for males who mark, and having raised a foster litter of pups, I strongly recommend Odoban. Only thing I know that actually gets the stink out of absolutely everything.

I got a Panasonic Canister from Amazon a few weeks ago, because the least expensive Miele didn't have the electrobrush. It's currently $212 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-CG917-OptiFlow-Canister-Cleaner/dp/B005JTHQXQ

I just moved into a home where the previous owner had dogs. First thing I did was vacuum the living room, and after my first run the bag got halfway filled with dog hair! I was amazed, and the bag is actually bigger than it looks. The powered brush can be turned off to suck and it's worked great on my laminate and wood floors. And the little attachment with the brush on it works great for my stairs and tight, small spaces. Haven't tried the other attachments yet but they fit right inside the canister nicely. And it came with two HEPA bags! So far it's an amazing vacuum. Only downsides are it looks a bit bigger than the Miele's and it's not overly loud but noisy, which are both very minor things to me.

I just dealt with fleas and it sucks. I got rid of them by being pretty aggressive. I bathed my dog with flea shampoo the Tropiclean one like suggested, used a flea comb after. I then got him a Serestro collar, and used K9 Advantax II again. He had it before the fleas actually showed up but i re-applied sooner than one month with Vet permission. Also used Capster for a week. Finally, I washed bedding, curtains, clothes, threw out some toys that were cloth he played with during the time and some couch cushions. Wiped down every surface with Vets best flea and tick home spray, spread out Diatomaceous Earth. Vaccumed every day for a week and a half and steam cleaned the floor, the couch, the bed with one of these. Aggressive and pricey yes but home and puppy are completely flea free. I still spot check with the flea comb just in case though.

u/JohnnyBrillcream · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

This might be a bit odd but I recently picked up one of these, ILIFE A4.

I dreaded the every other week vacuuming/cleaning schedule. Since I got this thing I rarely need to vacuum anymore, just two small carpeted areas. I swear this thing finds dirt I never knew I had.

Side effect is it's reduced the amount of dust in the house so dusting isn't needed as often and it's actually motivated me to keep other areas clean since this little thing does all the heavy lifting. It also "polishes" the floor a bit so not only are they clean but have a nice shine to them.

It really only works on very low knit carpet and wood/tile floors. It will clean two of my four carpets and both tile and wood floors every time it runs, and I run it daily.

Note: Do some research if you decide to get one, they can be found for $160 to $170 USD.

As far as cooking, I'm there with you. I used to cook all the time I just don't have the motivation anymore. I started to make my own pizza dough and that has been a help as I'm constantly trying to make it better and come up with new topping ideas. I made a Jerk Chicken and Smoked Brisket one a few weekends ago at a friends party.

Ok...this is really expensive ~$50, but I really need this. I have 8-9 animals and a very hard time keeping up with all of the cleaning involved. I would love you forever. ;) It would make me so happy because I love having a clean house but saving animals always takes precedence. Saving animals is my life.

We have the Roborock S5 vacuum off of Amazon.

It's quite pricey and not everyone can justify for an expensive vacuum cleaner, but this model is quite smart and is considerably cheaper than the mainstream brand (the equivalent costs about $800 or more if I'm not mistaken).

I used to have the cheaper robot vacuum and it wasn't very "smart". It'd bump into everything, get stuck and had a hard a hard time navigating back "home" (charging dock) to recharge.

I had my doubts on this new one we just got because of our past experience but we liked the fact that the floor was so clean every day and pretty smart. We have tile floors. You know that feeling when you're walking around barefoot and you just stepped on something dry or the bottom of your feet just feels dusty or crumbly? Yeah, no more of that! (We used to vacuum only on weekends)

Before I talk endlessly about the joys of owning a robot vacuum, I'll stop here :P Let me know if you have any questions though. We've owned this for more than a month now and it's been running every day for about 45 minutes, cleaning our whole one floor house. We also have a cat and it picks up cat hair just fine.

I have this Bissell hardfloor sweeper and I love it. It’s pretty cheap and does amazing sucking up all the tumbleweeds of dog hair. Plus it’s easy to clean.

Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hardwood Floor Bagless CleanerStick Vacuum

u/CitizenTed · 1 pointr/Bellingham

I gave up on rentals and bought one. This Bissell works really well - actually, a bit better - compared to those Rug Doctors you can rent at grocery stores. It cost about as much as two one-day rentals so it paid for itself in the first year.

If you need a bomber deep-clean, I recommend Grant from Bellingham Carpet. You have to move all your furniture, of course. But he uses non-chemically "green" products that won't stink up the place or leave you feeling icky. He's also a pretty nice guy and easy to work with.

u/Elijahs-Wood · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I wish i could recommend the vacuum we own but it's sadly way too pricey. If you're interested in the type it's a miele canister vacuum, I highly recommend it because they work so well but it's quite pricey. I think the lowest price is $299.

For ones that aren't that high priced you might try out this handheld vacuum to quickly suck out any pet hair that may be on furniture.

If you're looking for a larger vacuum that is upright and a lift-away this one might be useful to you. It's lightweight and comes with pet tools.

If upright vacuums aren't you're thing you might like this canister vacuum. It's compact and appears to have an easy empty dirt tank so you might not need to buy vacuum bags which will save you some money.

You should add this adorable little HP pillow to your wishlist :D

u/B0Bi0iB0B · 3 pointsr/personalfinance

Aside from his constant recommendations for Miele and Riccar, he does also recommend the higher end Panasonic canisters a few times for people that absolutely can't spend $800+. I got the MC-CG917 for $169 from Warehouse Deals in the new and used section (it's still Amazon, but returned items and such). It was brand new with everything, but the box was torn a little bit.

Amazing vacuum. Looks like it's the most expensive it's been for a long time, but it has regularly dropped below $200.

If anyone does decide to go this way, the brand name bags are $9/bag while these are $1.20/ bag. They work perfectly, so no reason to get brand name.

Very smart. You will not regret your decision to buy one. I purchased this one (https://www.amazon.com/BISSELL-PowerLifter-PowerBrush-Shampooer-1622/dp/B001BYW3NG/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1539128617&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bissell+carpet+cleaner&dpPl=1&dpID=41R1L7nu07L&ref=plSrch) and it has been great. My only complaint is that if the carpet has not been recently vacuumed, it can sometimes get clogged with pet hair. This really isn’t too big of an issue, it just leaves wet clumps of hair on the carpet. A few comments about this cleaner though

  1. Buy disposable gloves and a face mask. It’s disgusting to clean and the smell is horrible
  2. Change the water as often as you can
  3. Use a small amount of cleaning solution (I use dr. Broners concentrate). It will help with the smell
  4. Only use cold water on dog urine-hot water makes urine smell seep into the carpet
  5. Ever so often you’ll need to spray the whole thing down with a hose outside
  6. From my experience, it’s not so great on stairs. Have something ready to go just in case your dog decided to pee on the stairs

    Good luck!!

Hello! It looks like this post is somewhat active so I'll ask my question here. I've been looking for a vacuum to replace our $50 Eureka and am currently eyeing a couple of different Miele vacuums on Amazon.

Miele S2121 Delphi

Miele S2121 Capri

I currently have enough credit to cover either of the vacuums, and want to make the best purchase I can. Any other specific models I should be considering? Our apartment has medium carpet, hardwood floors, and concrete, with the potential for pets in the future.

Also, is there any downside to buying a Miele on Amazon instead of with a local dealer?

EDIT: I've been combing through your comments on other questions, and have been looking more specifically at s6 and s8 models. S6 is probably more within my reach. Model recommendations?

u/HedonisticFrog · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

For a cheaper vacuum cleaner Panasonic is great. Bagged vacuum cleaners will last longer and clean better. I just upgraded to a Panasonic bagged vacuum cleaner from a Panasonic bagless one and it was a huge difference. It picked up a lot even after I had used the bagless two days before. Below is what I bought.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005JTHQXQ/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/SmellGestapo · 4 pointsr/Bedbugs

Several years ago I had a bed bug problem. Not nearly as bad as some others I've seen, but a regular problem. I got rid of it myself with about six months of work.

Because bed bugs are attracted to your breath while you sleep, most of your work will be in and around your bed.

First you have to wash your sheets every week. Strip the bed and put the sheets in a plastic garbage bag to prevent spreading the bugs or eggs around your house or apartment, then throw the bags away once you get the sheets in the wash.

While the bed is stripped, inspect the box spring and bed frame for bugs and eggs. I used strips of scotch tape to gently lift any bugs I found without crushing them and spilling their blood all over my walls.

Twice a week, move the bed out from wherever it sits and clean the area under it. If it's carpeted, use a handheld steam cleaner to slowly blast steam all over the carpet to kill any eggs that may be buried there, then vacuum the entire area. Then spray the carpet with a bed bug spray.

Examine the ceiling, walls, and baseboards around the bed. Bed bugs love to hide in any little crack in your paint, or dent in your wall, or crevice between your baseboard and the dry wall. Again, use the scotch tape to lift any visible bugs off and throw them away. Run a vacuum cleaner hose attachment over the baseboards and the point at which two walls meet, or the wall and ceiling meet. Spray the bed bug spray on these areas.

Carefully examine any electrical outlets near your bed. This is where I found quite a few bugs hiding. Unscrew the outlet cover and look on the back side of it for any bugs there, and look in the outlet wall cavity for bugs. Don't stick metal back there or try to spray liquid. Instead, I used a powder twice a week.

Buy a bed bug mattress cover and one for your box spring if you have one.

While you're doing all this it's important to not change where you sleep, even though you may be getting devoured at night by bed bugs. They're attracted to your breath so if you try sleeping in another area of your home they may just follow you there and infest other furniture.

These are the steps that worked for me. Again, I did them once or twice a week for a solid six months. I never called an exterminator. My landlord tried to use some "bug bombs" from Home Depot but I found they did not work.

  2. It is a great vacuum. It does the best job I've seen and there are hardly any mechanical problems with it. Plus it is pretty light weight which makes it easy to carry.

  3. I don't think I would be... knowing how great of a vacuum it is, I think it would be worth shelling out the extra couple hundred knowing I'm getting a quality product instead of settling for something I'll have to replace more frequently. But would it kill me, no.

i think you're pretty well covered with the other comments and suggestions here, but FWIW, we rented a house near a river with a finished basement, and it would do this every spring. unless the basement was sealed perfectly, water draining into the ground will naturally seep through the concrete and you end up with this. you can try to mitigate it with a sump pump (maybe you have one and it failed?), but it relies on all the water flowing into the sump.

we ended up buying a steam cleaner vacuum, something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BYW3NG/ . It doesn't completely dry out the carpet, but it did manage to suck up most of the water leaving it damp. dehumidifiers took care of the rest. if you get one of these look for something with a decent sized tank since you'll be emptying it often.

We have a robot that picks up dog hair (on solid floors) pretty well. We didn't get a "name brand" so maybe that's why? We did a lot of research into ours specifically for pet hair. It's an Ecovacs if you're interested. My 1 year old is deathly afraid of our robot though.

I wouldn't recommend Consumer Reports for their vacuum reviews, as they only test the vacuum's cleaning ability, not its longevity.

At the $400 level I'd recommend either the Miele Twist ($449) or the [Simplicity Symmetry Standard](http://simplicityvac.com/symmetry-standardn ($399).

If you are willing to look at used vacuums, you can find Miele Canisters for around $300, and Riccar 8900 and Vibrance uprights for less than $200.

The best tool for cleaning animal hair on furniture is a motorized or air driven brush.

For Valentine's day I asked my boyfriend for a robot vacuum instead of flowers. I know last year he spent over $100 for one of those elaborate arrangements, and I was able to convince him that a robot vacuum would give me pleasure and happiness every day instead of flowers that will die in a week. I did a bunch of research and we got an ILIFE vacuum, which was only $180 on amazon. Totally affordable, you should look into it. I use a big plastic paint scraper/putty knife to scrape off the excess waste, then either spray everything down with vinegar water or poop off before wiping down with a cloth. A steam cleaner (I use one of these) helps with really stuck-on messes.

One of my cages is 6' tall x 6' wide x 3' deep and it's impractical for me to take it outside to hose it down, even when the weather is good. So the cages get steam cleaned once a week, and are given spot wet cloth cleanings three times a week. The longer you leave it, the more work it is and the more you just want to take them out and hose them down. If you just do a little every few days, it makes it far easier to manage!

I gotta tell you my super-effective tile and tub-cleaning technique. This is from trial and error, cleaning an apartment complex that is owned by a family member.

  • Scrub tile faces and tub with Magic Eraser, this works incredibly well
  • Use a steam cleaner on the grout lines, alternating steam and scrubbing with a brush
  • After steaming, spray all tiles and grout lines (liberally) with a household cleaner that contains bleach
  • Let the bleach cleaner set into the tiles for an hour, then re-spray.

The magic eraser cleans the tile faces immediately. After steam-scrubbing the grout and a few applications of bleach, the grout is good as new. And remember to not mix cleaning agents, especially those with bleach or ammonia.

I mean you could but I would caution against a power washer INSIDE a house. Water control could get out of hand. One of these thou:

I bought this one. I have collies that shed and I’ve been running it every other day and immediately cleaning it out, been working out great.

u/AdamJacobMuller · 1 pointr/aww

I suggest the Dyson Pet Version. Works great.

u/Feetos · 1 pointr/IFseniorclass

Ooh, I hadn't considered cleaning products. I ADORE my Bissell PowerEdge hard floor pet vacuum

u/krische · 1 pointr/roomba

In my opinion, if you don't want to pay for the i7+ or s9+ line of Roomba, I would look at other brands. Unless you are trying to go super cheap, I don't see a point in spending money on a random navigation robot anymore, LIDAR/vision is the way to go.

Watch this Vacuum Wars video: https://youtu.be/4Fed8durfb4

So I would look at the Roborock S5 $499, the Roborock S4 $399, or the Neato D4 $349.

Our hand maid, Mei, sometimes closes the door to the bathroom while cleaning and gets stuck in there.

I get home and hear her yelling in Chinese from across the house and have to help her get out. Meanwhile, my cat is outside the bathroom, gloating.

u/aMinnesotaBro · 1 pointr/financialindependence

I'm in the market for a new vacuum and am leaning towards buying a cheaper one, but I really feel like I'm going to regret it. I'm just in an apartment now so it's not a big deal, but will hopefully be buying a house in a few years.

Any vacuum advice you'd be willing to give? I don't have much experience in it since I'm currently using the old vacuum from my parents house that is probably 15 years old.

u/levislegend · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have this shark vacuum and I absolutely love it. It's light weight so it's easy to use on stairs, and is great at picking up pet hair! I have 2 cats and a dog myself.

you should add this to your wishlist, just cause I think it's funny

The household chore I hate the most is doing laundry. I just can't stand it. IT NEVER ENDS!

u/Hopulus · 37 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Just from my personal experience, I have been using this one for the past 6 months and it works great so far. I have a two story home, no pets, half carpet, half hardwood floors. If you don't mind a bagged canister vacuum - Panasonic MC-CG917

I think /u/touchmyfuckingcoffee recommended it in one of his threads.

u/IrrationalHate · 1 pointr/IAmA

I'm looking to get a Hoover Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum for my workplace, as we have hardwood floors on one half and concrete on the other, and sweeping never really gets the place clean, no matter what my boss tells me.

Thoughts on it? I was mostly trying to stay away from a corded vacuum, if only because we don't have a lot of accessible outlets at work. But I'm open to being convinced otherwise.

u/Gumbee · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Miele-S7210-Upright-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B003YIXK2A

Miele S7210 Twist. I've never had a better vacuum, works perfectly on carpet and hardwood alike.

u/Aparty · 3 pointsr/Frugal

I have the Shark Navigator Lift Away and couldn't be happier. I use it on all my floors, from tile to shag carpet and low pile carpet, even in my car. I have 2 long haired cats who shed heavily and their kitty litter is, unfortunately, in a carpeted room. It picks up everything. When using on bare floor or low pile ou just run it once without the beater bar, then turn on the beater bar for the carpet to pick any hair it misses.

It doesn't have any belts to replace and the main filter is washable. It's not terribly noisy either and has a few different variations to assembly so you can use it in tight spaces, on stairs, etc.

My sister was borrowing her MIL's Dyson but decided to buy a Shark for herself because I raved about it so much. She said it picked things up the Dyson didn't. She has 2 cats, a lab and a husky.

My mother has a cocker spaniel and a rott/lab/shepherd mix and she bought one too.

We've all been really happy with it (over a year now). Did I mention it swivels?

u/SwimsDeep · 1 pointr/howto

Hand held steamer. Here’s the one I have. I use it on everything. Cleans with chemicals. PurSteam

u/heyhobabyoh · 1 pointr/AprilBumpers2018

I have this robot vacuum and it's amazinggg. Despite having 2 dogs and a cat, I never have fur stuck on the bottom of my feet! It's magical! I've run it about every other day since we got it in April and can't recommend it enough. So wonderful.

u/Aubiko · 1 pointr/Pets

My house is mostly hardwood floors and tile. I use Bissel PowerEdge Hard Floor for the hard surface floors, which is most of my house.

I have all cats, no dog. My biggest problem was cat hair and kitty litter on the floor. The tank is very easy to empty and the vacuum itself is light and simple to use. It has no problem picking up litter, dirt, and hair. I use it on an almost daily basis. It's only for hard floors, but it is cheap.

I use a Hoover pet series vacuum for the carpet. It seems wasteful to have two vacuums for the different floor types, but I have yet to find a good vacuum that will do both effectively. Vacuuming often makes mopping less of a necessity for me.

I think the difference is the color option, refer to this amazon page https://www.amazon.com/Roborock-Robotic-Connectivity-Navigating-Capacity/dp/B0792BWMV4?keywords=roborock+s51&qid=1536588613&sr=8-3&ref=sr_1_3, where there are three available colors white, rose and black. But Xiaomi isn´t clear about that.

u/Gravedigger3 · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I've been saving up to buy a Miele S7210 soon.

Would you recommend this or is there something else in a similar price range I should check out?

I don't need it for anything special; just need to replace my broken Hoover. I live in a single story home that's mostly carpet with some tile.

I found the reviews on Amazon for the models sold on Amazon to be persuasive. For eg.

https://www.amazon.com/ILIFE-Robot-Vacuum-Cleaner-Titanium/dp/B01F79WLZ0

And the prices on GearBest made it feasible to purchase two in place of carrying one upstairs and downstairs every other day.

Seconding the Roomba suggestion. Between that and this cordless stick vac, we handle our 2 cats and 1 dog worth of hair on our hardwood floor.

I have two of these. Bought the first one after Wirecutter told me to and bought the second because I was so impressed with the first. Every bit as good as any Roomba I've ever had, gets stuck less, and can be (crudely) controlled by Alexa.

  1. A Dyson vacuum.
  2. I love cleaning (nerd alert) and have always wanted a Dyson. We also have a ton of fury animals that live with us. The freeloading kind that don't clean up after themselves.
  3. I think I would live.

So I haven't heard of Miele or riccar, but we had to get a new vacuum last year and ended up with this one from Shark. We've been really happy with it and omg the amount of dirt we picked up the first time we used it made me appaled and what a piss poor job our old vacuum was doing. I also have steam cleaner recs if you happen to be looking for one of those too...last year was a bad year for our household goods lol.

Thank you! I think I'll go for the Dirt Devil Dynamite.

By the way, I was also looking at the Dirt Devil Simpli-Stik Lightweight Corded Bagless Stick Vacuum and the Bissell 3-in-1 Vacuum. They're both under $20, but I assume they're cheap and won't last a year right?

Bought a blue Miele pet upright off Amazon a couple of years ago for three fiddy, about a year ago they changed U bag design, the new bags no longer fit very well and fall off when the bag is half full, fills entire bag chamber with dirt/dust/hair crap that is mucho gross. Bought 3 different boxes of U bags off ebay and Amazon and even tried a local shop, local shop said I was SOL then laughed at me for buying a Miele, claiming they change shit like that all the time. Miele customer service SUCKS, good luck with that.

Sold that POS on craigslist for a cool hundy. Waved goodbye to it as it rolled away and whispered audios you dirty dirty Motherfucker.
