I busted mine in a crash last summer pretty badly and it swelled up nearly golf ball sized that day. Went to an ortho the next day for X-rays and had sprained the UCL pretty badly and fractured some tiny bones that don’t really matter. Sounds like mine was much worse than yours and they just gave me a brace similar to this:

(Make sure you get the correct hand since it’s non-reversible.)

Just wear that nearly all the time (I showered with mine even) for a while (I think I went 2–4 weeks so probably not as long for you) and keep icing as the inflammation can sometimes further strain the ligament. Don’t try to see how far you can bend your thumb for a while.

I was riding my bike trainer with the brace on after a week probably and back on my MTB (after a few false starts) maybe a month and a half later.

Now nine months after injury and my thumb is still not 100% but continues to get better. I mostly just try to make sure i don’t do anything that pulls on it (phone typing can even be bad if I’m not careful). Hurts after rides and still throbs randomly at work or other places, but it works now.

Edited to add: if you’re not wearing a brace in everyday life and want to make sure you don’t end up pulling the thumb back just hold your hand in the “OK” position. That’s my default way of holding my busted thumb’s hand now.

I like this discussion, I think good stretches and warmups are important to any activity, whether it be yoga, football, or gaming.

On that note, ergonomic positioning and technique is very important to save your limbs over the long haul. Trust me, I got some serious carpal tunnel from my laptop keyboard. To help combat this, I recommend a couple of products to make gaming for comfortable:

  • Gaming Keypads: The linked one is my current keyboard, although I got it for much, much cheaper. It gives you a natural palm rest and the ability to move your keyboard freely for enhanced comfort.

  • Wrist cushions to keep your wrists level, and ease the strain of long sessions.

  • Wrist Braces Which do a lot to keep more strain off your wrists, and pressure off of your painful median nerve.

  • Comfort-conscious mice I haven't had a chance to try this one out personally, but it is important to use a mouse that is the right size for your hands.

    Another good practice is to make sure your chair and desk height are high enough to keep your arms level to your input devices.

Ok, thanks, the rest of that was helpful. It is very interesting and I am uncertain what to think about the warm bath improving your symptoms. Usually any heat will increase blood flow and with swelling, especially in tight places, will make the matter worse - but in your case it improved. It is also entirely possible position, rather than the bath, may have improved your symptoms. Alternatively it begs the question if there might be something vascular (you know pins and needles after sitting on your leg a certain way) as the central issue - I doubt it, but interesting.

I think you might be on to something with regard to sleeping position. I have encountered a number of patients who slept in an extreme flexion or extension position that seemed to exacerbate a wrist condition. You might consider wearing a thumb spica to bed. Further, I suspect you have already been advised ice and NSAIDs. I think all of the pain radiating up the arm is typical of what nerves do. When the wrist/snuff box issue is resolved, so too will be the other symptoms. I hope this was helpful. Good luck.

I got carpal tunnel playing way too much Tekken and Beatmania right before season 3. I wasn't listening to my body and it progressed to this. I won't be able to play for a long time and it maybe in my best interest to quit fighting games in general. Be sure to listen to your body and take preventative steps like with exercising.

Also it's not a bad idea to wear a non intrusive wrist brace to just support your wrist while playing. If you're not convinced, Knee wears wrist braces while playing. Ok, so it’s the ulnar nerve. Tingling in the fingers can be caused by an injury anywhere in the nerve, such as the wrist or the elbow. If you have pain in the wrist, and none in the elbow, it’s probably the wrist, but I can’t say for sure. You can try touching the ulnar nerve in your elbow on both sides and seeing if it’s more sensitive on the affected side. You can see the location on Wikipedia, but basically when you hit your “funny bone” and it hurts, you’ve actually hit the ulnar nerve. But don’t hit it now, just press with your finger and see if it hurts more on one side.

Anyway, the cause of your injury is probably mechanical. This can be pressure on the nerve for an extended time (sleeping on it), or overuse (RSI). Perhaps a combination. What kind of activities do you do with your hands? Computer use? Playing games? Exercise? It’d be good to rest the affected arm. For example, if you use your phone a lot, you could try moving it to the other pocket and holding it with the other hand.

For sleeping, you can fold a towel and wrap it around your arm, using some tape to secure it. It doesn’t need to be too tight, the idea is more to give you some padding and to keep you from bending your arm or wrist. You can wrap it around your elbow with your arm straight. This would work pretty well for your elbow, so you don’t need to get an elbow brace.

If the problem is more with the wrist, and there’s an RSI component, I think it’s more important to allow it to rest during the day, by wearing a brace for a week or two (you can take it off at night). If the price is too high, you may be able to find a used one locally, on Craigslist or something. People usually use these for a limited time and then just keep them.

But actually, you may be able to just splint it yourself. Get a long, flat piece of metal, wood or plastic, and place it on the back of your hand and forearm, going over your wrist. Then wrap gauze or a strip of cloth around your forearm and hand, going around your thumb too. Look at the professional RSI braces for inspiration.

I've been using this after my old one started to fall apart and works pretty well imo. It'll take some getting used to as it will force your wrist in a certain position. Note you have to be consistent and it'll take weeks for you feel a difference. You can wear it throughout the day if you can make it work. I also recommend doing some wrist strengthening exercises like wrist curls with light (2-5lb) dumbbells. You want to make sure your wrist maintains strength as using the brace means you will be using less strength in the general area

About 5 years ago I jammed my top-hand wrist poke checking a puck and getting the player's skates instead. Nothing broken or sprained, but just enough to where it's never been quite the same. The joint cracks and pops all the time, and I need just a little more support on it when shooting.

There are also products out there if you don't mind shelling out a little dough... but I tend to recommend those as a last effort because they won't help you strengthen over time. If you have a permanent injury or chronic pain that does not get even a little better after you have practiced for a few months, you might try these. They decrease the angle that your wrist is in during poses like downward facing dog so you can comfortably complete a practice. Again, don't just jump to the easy fix. Try to strengthen first, see a doc if you need to, wrist strap thingys if you must.

I've had carpal tunnel for a while now in both hands. Recently, it's become much worse, and I just requested "reasonable accommodation" (mouse and numeric keypad) from work today. I'm not great about wearing them, but these wrist braces Amazon Link have been the only thing so far that relieves the numbness. They are far better than the braces available at drugstores, and after more than 2 years of use, both are still in great condition. Highly recommend!

Edit: just a tip - don't wear them tight. It's enough to just keep your hand in this relaxed position, even during work.

Do yourself a favor and buy a night brace on Amazon, I had to do it a few weeks ago as I was experiencing extremely similar pains. The brace will help put your hand/rest in a neutral position while you sleep. Your hand might feel stiff the first night or two but it passes. Make sure to do wrist/hand exercises now too! Rests and breaks are key!

Braces can be cheaper than that, depending on where you go. I've also been blessed with carpal tunnel in my pregnancy (mine actually started around the beginning of the third trimester too so I've been dealing with it for a bit).

My brace was about $15 at Walmart (this is the one I have). It helps tremendously for me. I have a sedentary job and it does make it difficult to type but I've adjusted to that and the pain is just so much better.

I bought a different one for sleep since that one isn't very comfortable to sleep in (this one for sleep). It doesn't provide nearly as much support but it does keep the wrist straight overnight which helps with the pain in the morning.

I've thankfully only had it in my right hand but I can feel it developing in my left as well now. Hoping that doesn't get too bad and I can hold off on getting more braces since I'm almost done now!

Putting weight on my wrists exacerbated the situation so this keyboard taught me to only use my fingertips to type. If you try to rest your hands on it then it will collapse.

Also if you are already feeling pain, then you should wear wrist braces that have a splint for a while - even when you sleep. The goal is to always keep your wrist straight. I noticed other task like driving i would have my wrist bent on the steering wheel causing pain so I had to train myself not to do that. Here’s a good brace:

Well currently I am sitting on my sofa at home - but I will be in college tomorrow while I sit through 4-5 hours of lecture classes...

I am in Child and Family studies with a dual specialization in Early Childhood Education and Family life educator. I want to be a family support worker for the Healthy families program. I am set to graduate after fall term 2014.

I kinda need the Left L/XL wrist brace... These braces have metal support on the front and back of brace not just the front like the one I have for my left wrist. And with all the writing I am having to do in my senior year - my carpal Tunnel syndrome is acting up.

Agree with the carpal tunnel. I've got it in both wrists since about 24 weeks. It started with the painfully numb hands overnight and then my dominant hand has progressed to being numb throughout the day after doing various tasks. Doesn't help that my job is 99% computer data entry.

Anywho, dr said to wear the braces and they help SO much. After a while I've just gotten used to wearing them. I have a sturdy daytime one to use on my dominant hand and a super comfortable cushy (but sturdy) pair to wear at nighttime.This is the nighttime one that I use and its amazing!

I've had both carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis over the past year, and I highly recommend seeing your primary doctor or a hand specialist sooner rather than later. In both cases, I was able to get injections which relieved the pain and numbness within a few days. Wearing a brace at night will also help with carpal tunnel; my doctor recommended this brace which is available from Amazon for about $20, and I wear them on both wrists every night. Good luck!

First off, MGE is the most efficient way I know to get better at scout vs scout, you can pub, and play DM, but you are less likely to encounter another scout, and when you most battles are over with very quickly and you don't really learn from it.

If you have a problem with carpal tunnel then I recommend this I use it all of the time, and it seems to have a significant improvment on how my hand feels (my mouse hand).

Next if you want to land more shots you might want to change your mindset, and ONLY fire when you think it will do a significant damage. I know that sounds intuitive, but I notice a significant improvement in shots that I land when I think like this, instead of mindlessly shooting. If it gets frustrating then thats probably when you should stop and take a break.

If there is a significant skill difference move on after the 20 kills are up, and maybe focus and trying to dodge better instead of working on aiming. If you want someone to practice against then steam message me here. And I can just work on dodging, which you can always improve.

I don't have carpal tunnel, but I've dealt with tendonitis in my wrist off and on over the past ten years. I'm so sorry you're going through this - it's miserable and affects so many everyday things!

For sleeping, if you can isolate your wrist so that it remains in a neutral position and not bent funny or curled under, that can help a lot. The easiest way to do this is with a splint, which you might even be able to find at a pharmacy.

For the daytime, I'd suggest using kinesiology tape to support your wrist/hand/forearm but still be flexible. There are several youtube videos that show where to apply the tape for carpal tunnel.

I had carpal tunnel before I got pregnant, and thankfully it hasn't gotten worse. My suggestion is to wear wrist splints when you sleep. I get woken up easily (with tingling or pain) if I bend my wrists in my sleep.

I had a similar thing. In fact I still feel it now, about 3 to 4 months later.

The short version for me was:

  • stop climbing for a week
  • get one of these maybe - they are pricey, but I definitely feel like it helped my wrist not to die, when I did painful shit accidentally. Two thin strips of tape do the same thing, but they are not as comfy - your choice.
  • continue climbing carefully, make sure not to hold slopers (big pinches can be bad too)
  • eliminate slopers from your life for the next X months
  • crimp hard in the mean time (don't hurt yourself pls)
  • wrist feels kinda ok -> hold some slopers to get stronger again

    Wrist strengthening exercises didn't really help me I feel. Stretching could be helpful though. I always stretch my wrists a bit before climbing now.

    Don't worry, your gonna be fine. Just give it some time and concentrate on other things in the mean time.

I have RSI and Carpal Tunnel and i use copper compression sleeves for longer periods of gaming, people say they dont work but for me its made it 20000x easier to play games for longer periods of time, im sure they do elbow ones for Cubital also.

I had pain in my wrists when I started out. It's gone now but this is what I did to fix it:

  • took two weeks off playing
  • slept with wrist braces to keep my wrists in a neutral position all night. This maximizes circulation and promotes healing. I still sleep with these.
  • stretch for 5 mins before every practice session
  • applied Penetrex anti-inflammatory cream after a long practice session.
  • practiced in front of a mirror to make sure my posture was good and there were no awkward angles in my wrists
  • switched to classical position and got a nice adjustable foot stool.

    That pretty much cleared it up, but I didn't have any serious pain or anything. Just the early onset of something nasty. Definitely take care of it now before it gets bad.

Yeah, if you're old. I'm 30. Still into it. I recommend getting some wrist braces and sleeping in them - does wonders for me. I love these mueller ones, and they are cheap. Better than the ones my doc gave me.

Try not to white-knuckle the controller and everything you touch in the world. Amazingly, breath of the wild on the switch really helped me loosen up my grip a lot.

Your sticks should "pop" up about 2mm on the stickbox shaft if you pull them up - pull them up and try to play without pressing them down. that'll help a bit to keep awareness of your grip, but do it training, not against a player.

Looks great! I am just starting out and was surprised at how much I had to control my "shake" when I am really concentrating on hitting those hard-to-reach or finer details. I started having trouble with my hands falling asleep while sleeping probably about 8 months into doing CF. It got to the point where it was painful and would wake me up. I saw a PT (who also went to my gym) who thought it might be a shoulder issue. I tried some stretches, but it didn't really seem to work. I eventually went to my primary care physician and his conclusion was that it was carpal tunnel. He suggested I start sleeping with these wrist things (one for each hand, obvs). It has REALLY helped. I do wear them every night now. They still fall asleep at night sometimes, but not to the point of pain/bothering me, and they don't bother me much during the day either.

I highly recommend you get this checked out by a doctor or climbing physio.

I felt this exact sensation of my forearm painlessly "separating" from my hand on several different kinds of holds (slopers, holding myself into an overhung wall using a pinch were the two most notable).

I had already been neglecting some level of wrist pain when twisting my wrist in either direction for a couple of months at that point and even once I started feeling this weird sensation I kept climbing for a few more weeks until the pain became unbearable. Finally got it checked out by a hand specialist and it turned out that I had a torn tfcc and ecu tendon subsheath resulting in ecu tendon subluxation. It took me more than 7 months of no climbing or any other exercise using my wrist until I could climb pain free.

Definitely don't do what I did. Stop climbing/working out until you get it looked at by a professional and hear what they have to say.

Was looking on amazon for new lifting straps and came across these LINK . You think i can use those for both regular lifting wrist straps to support my wrists instead of picking up velcro ones and use them for deadlifts straps as well or should i also grab these ones as well without the straps for days i need to bench wrist straps without deadliftingstrap . I am wondering if i need both, thinking of saving my cash and only getting the first one and using it for bench and on back days as well.

It's probably carpal tunnel. I have it and it sucks. Like everyone said, do stretches. I switched to continental because my right hand is worse so the movement of the left hand is easier, except for moss stitch or ribbing. elbow pillow splint doctor gave me one on loan until i get one because i did something to my arm and have a pinched nerve or other issue and have two numb fingers with no pain.. i have to wear it at night and this week i have to either buy it from them or return it.. what they want for it is insane.. i guess they assume insurance is gonna buy it.

Hey! I got the MRI for a suspected tfcc tear as well but it came back negative. That said, my hand specialist still thinks theres a problem with it. It might just be instable without a tear. I recommend doing rice bucket exercise, and also the hammer one helped me I think. You grab a hammer by the handle and rotate it slowly to reinforce your wrist.

I have pretty bad pain at the base of my thumbs--the CMC joint. My hand specialist (orthopedic surgeon) said the pain is from joint laxity. It moves too much. I don't have any experience with those ones. I have used this and from the look of it is probably more secure. The velcro will still peel off if you bend it too much. If you are looking for something which won't come off at all then this is what you want, it has metal splints which can easily be taken out.

I wear carpal tunnel braces - I can't recommend enough that you use synthetic ones instead of those cotton ones they sell at CVS. The synthetics both keep the smell down and make them easier to wash.

These - they also come in L/XL are also a lot cheaper than the drug store ones.

I had pretty awful carpal tunnel with my last pregnancy (from about 28 weeks on) and wore these braces as much as I could stand them (day and night) and they helped. I also found that the carpal tunnel persisted about a week after I delivered, also (I know that's not what you want to hear - sorry!!) - it really didn't go away until all of my swelling subsided. On the bright side, just because you have it with one pregnancy, it doesn't guarantee it for future times - I'm 32 weeks with my second and so far so good!

I've drafted a pattern for a sleeve to fit inside a wrist brace and I'm wondering which way to align it on the grain. I'm thinking I should align the grain with the direction the sleeve will be worn (front to back, fingers to mid-arm), but I'm not sure. I'm a programmer by day, and enjoy pc gaming. I regularly do some of the wrist exercises noted by Darkstrategy. I also switched to an ergonomic keyboard and trackball at work (not home), and started putting on a wrist splint when I slept. This is the wrist splint I use. All of these combined have definitely lessened my day-to-day pain. If I spend a particularly long session in front of my PC it still sometimes bothers me, but it's made a big difference.

Overall though, you definitely need to pay attention to your ergonomics. Stop slouching, space everything correctly, etc. Takes a while to build new habits, but it's worth it.

About 2 years ago I had CT in my non-bowling wrist. Funny enough, at the time, I bought a new phone and because of the shape and how I held it, I developed CT. Saw the doctor, took some anti-inflammatory and it luckily went away shortly after.

The past 2 months, my bowling arm wrist has developed CT. This one isn't as painful and it actually does not hurt while in the motion of bowling. It does hurt other times, a lot.

I have it too - and also didn't know that it was a possible pregnancy thing. It's pretty unpleasant, but mine has come and gone since week 15 or so.

This wrist brace (have to buy separate for each hand) has really helped - even if I just wear it at night. I find that sometimes I do have to wear them at work (I type a lot), and if I'm going to be driving a lot I wear them (we drove from PA to Chicago early June).

I had a very similar issue recently. I started having pain in my right wrist after a night of heavy squat cleans. After that i couldn't do anything that involved being in the front rack position. I also couldn't stay in a handstand pushup or even regular pushup position as that bent my wrist back from my arm in the same sirection. After 2 months of waiting for it to get better on it's own to no avail, I became concerned and went to an orthopedic doctor. She took xrays and confirmed that nothing was broken- it was just a sprain and it would still take a couple of months to completely heal. She suggested I should ice it and wear a wrist brace. (I got this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Fitted-Right-Wrist-medium/dp/B002NLGNW8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00) She also recommended that I go to physical therapy 3 times a week. I thought that was a bit much and never ended up going.

Sure enough, it took about 2 months after the doctor visit (4 months after the injury) to be back to 100% and lift regularly again. During that period, whenever there were front squats, thrusters, or press/jerks in the WOD, i would use dumbbells which I could grip without any pain at all.

I am only speaking from my experience. Of course your situation could be completely different. Hopefully its a sprain and you just need to give it some more time, but you should see an orthopedic doctor if possible to see if there's anything more severe going on.

If you have wrist issues, get a nice set of wrist wraps (these are great) or tape your wrists. The lifts that are most likely to cause you pain there are front squats, overhead squats, overhead presses and sometimes even bench, but using the supports has prevented my janky wrists from acting up, and they've even gotten better over time since I started lifting, because I've started addressing the shoulder mobility issues that make wrist problems worse.

I just keep it near my computer and put it on whenever I play tagpro. If I play for more than a few hours at a time I still sometimes get tingling, but otherwise the brace has eliminated the problem.

Hey, I really hope this gets upvoted, but what you are complaining about is the beginning of carpal tunnel from the vibration. My suggestion (and I’ve had to do this before) is buy these https://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Fitted-Wrist-Brace-Medium/dp/B002NLGNW8/ref=lp_13106341_1_4_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1550548653&sr=1-4&th=1 or similar ones for each wrist and sleep wearing them every night.

The reason why you have the pain is from sleeping and having your wrists bent so the tendons can’t relax. Trust me on this you will feel better. (Like I said I had the same issue from vibration and the surgeon I went to suggested this)

I will also add that while this will help and ultimately keep you from doing permanent damage this is only a temporary (3ish months) solution. If you keep doing the repetitive action causing this you will do permanent damage and workers comp will not pay for repetitive motion injuries. So start using the wrist braces now.

Have you tried nighttime carpal tunnel braces? I got CTS during my first pregnancy and it never went away. I use these braces and they help SO much. Wearing that at night pretty much eliminated my daytime pain and discomfort.

Here are the braces I used that helped and are not too expensive.If you have an HSA or FSA account you can use those funds to pay for these.

First, a lot of people do bicep curl incorrectly. So you might want to check your form on that. Aside from that, you could simply have some inflammation in your wrists. I have arthritis in my left wrist - I think it's from playing hockey as a kid, that's when it started bothering me. So whenever I do pressing movements (or even heavy squats), my wrist bothers me. It started a month ago. I don't have any major pain. Maybe a burning sensation, but mainly just tingling on my thumb, index, middle finger, and part of the palm. The doctor told me it was overuse syndrome, and gave me wrist splint to wear while I worked. I asked if it could be carpal tunnel, and she said no because of lack of pain. I'm kind of skeptical of the diagnosis because symptoms seem to match exactly from what I read online. Pain isn't a necessary condition. I only had pain like in the couple days before the numbness started. (I thought my hand was just sore) The first couple weeks while working the numbness/tingling was pretty apparent. It got especially bad while sleeping like you. Writing and playing guitar also activated it. I've since taken a couple weeks off work though (I could do that because I'm working with temp agencies right now), and it has improved dramatically . The tingling is only slight now and the extreme numbness no longer activates while sleeping. I'm really hoping it goes away. This shit is so discouraging to get early in my career. I'm worried getting back to work will undo the progress.

Also, one of these helped a lot when I first got the symptons. It prevents my wrist and fingers from curling while I sleep.
