27+2 and mostly finished the nursery for our baby boy. We don't really have a theme, but my husband LOVES Calvin and Hobbes and we kind of incorporated some of our favourite things throughout (like Disney, Star Wars, and Super Heroes). The crib, rocker and dresser were all free hand-me-downs! The only thing we are still wanting to add is a small clothes hamper, an Ubbi diaper pail and a sling bookshelf where the bassinet is currently (the bassinet will be moved into our room when baby comes).

Top 5 that $ can buy (CAN links):

  1. Halcent Floating Bookshelves

  2. Fisher Price Soothing Motions Bassinet - I ended up getting this used (but basically brand new) off Facebook Marketplace for $80!

  3. Wayfair Little Jewel Changing Table - I can't link to it currently because it's out of stock, but this was sturdy, looks nice and is easy to put together.

  4. Calvin and Hobbes Vinyl Wall Decor - This shipped from overseas and took forever! It also comes in several peices and was pretty hard to install (it took us hours) but once we followed the instructions and got the hang of the technique, it went pretty smoothly and we love how it turned out!

  5. Lightsaber - My husband actually got this as a gag gift a few Christmases ago. (It's not bright enough to actually do nighttime diaper changes, but it's a cool nightlight) and Star Wars Prints.

All the prints were actually from small Etsy shops. I ordered the types that you can download and print yourself! All the frames were super cheap IKEA frames. The blackout curtains are from Walmart, but we've had them for years and just repurposed them. If you see any other items you want to know about, ask me. :)

Our top faves that money can't buy:

  6. Stuffies - all either ours when we were babies/kids or purchased on our trips to Disneyland with our future kiddo in mind.

  7. Winnie the Pooh books - I found these for $1 each at an estate sale 5 years ago and always pictured them in a nursery. They were published in 1925.

  8. Crocheted Blanket - this was my husband's baby blanket made by his late grandmother.

  9. Truck Piggy Bank, Hand Turned Lamp and Dresser - my late grandfather (who we are naming our baby after) was an amazing hobby woodworker and built all these peices, they've been handed out through my family for generation!

A warming story, we adopted our daughter a year ago. She's the best!

They may have baby stuff but the needs of a 1 year old are different than a newborn. I only mention that if they have mostly infant gear then perhaps there are some 1 year old appropriate items you can offer.

This is around the time you get children become more mobile. If their child is not walking yet, she may benefit from "walker" toys that help her learn. Thing you push around to gain strength and practice.

Our one year old LOVES this Fisher Price toy chair that sings when you sit in it. Somebody gave it as a gift and when we saw it we didn't really think she would be that interested. Of course every child is different.

Let me find a link.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Chair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J49UU0I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nIn2AbMTXB6RH

Also devices to child proof the house would be put to good use. Plugs for sockets, gates, things to soften corners, latches for cabinets, etc.

Do they have a registry for gifts? If they put thought into the exact things they need or want (there are so many brands of everything), you cannot go wrong with anything on the list. Even the stuff that seems less exciting, they will need and appreciate.

You can also offer to help them when they are adjusting to their new life. Go over and mow the lawn or wash dishes, stuff they will neglect until they find a new ballance in their life. Order them a spontaneous pizza. Cook foods that reheat easily, that sort of thing.

  1. Blue Because this is all I could think about after reading #1

  1. Summer Accessories bc this would be Awesome at the beach, and I hear they work great!

  2. Weird food related items items. Not sure I'd be able to actually consume these without vomiting lol.

  3. Id gift this for my daughter, bc she is the ultimate FNAF fan and 6 years old, and it's one of the only 3 she doesn't own for her plush collection.

  4. House of Leavess my ultimate favorite book, and I push it on everyone I know that loves reading. Although intimidating, the format is awesome and original, and mimics the way we Google and use the internet for constant reference. Plus the codes are siiiick.

  5. This is less than a dollar and ADORABLE

  6. This looks like a rad dog toy, whilst simultaneously resembling a sexy toy too lol

  7. This is so expensive and impractical but I would live in this thing!

  8. Vanilla Skywas a movie that really spoke to me as a teenager. If you don't like your reality, change it- just, errrr, mayne not the way Tom Cruise does. Also the mostly Radiohead soundtrack kicks ass.

  9. A katana would obviously trump guns in the zombie apocalypse- you'd eventually run out of bullets, and this baby is the most expensive Amazon's got, so I'd hope youd get quality.

  10. Microsoft Office would help me out. I'm an aspiring writer, but using an offbrand, free version that doesn't work makes writing a nit more tedious and difficult-even spellcheck doesn't work!

  11. Annoying add-on bc a girl can never have too many of these, amirite?

  12. FNAF is as close to fandom as I get. My kid is obsessed, therefore I am obsessed, and I'm not into sports :(

  13. This watch popped up after seeking the most expensive item on Amazon, although it doesn't seem justified lol.

  14. I Chose BOTH a shark & unicorn !

  15. Thierry Mugler Angel smells great- I had to ask a customer what she used bc I wanted to eat her flesh when she walked past me.

  16. Teddy Ruxpin was so 90's- we put our fave cassettes in and hed seemingly sing along

  17. The Artist's Way
by Julia Cameron is one of my favorite books on creative unblocking for both writers AND artists! I go back to it whenever Im in a slump!

  18. This tote file would be totes cool bc Im obsessed with organizing!

  19. This coloring book about farts? Ridiculous and fun. Id likely make ea fart a different color lol.

It's just that perfect mix of real life and fantasy that Miyazaki can always pull off, Just like how no one thinks anything of Kiki flying on her broom. This movie captures a nice feel of japanese school child feelings, the pains of growing up, and the want to be independent of that system. It's not as much of a fantasmagoria as Howl's or Spirited Away, but the mundane life tasks are just magically portrayed and the story builds nicely throughout..

Plus, it introduces the storyline that later turns into The Cat Returns, which is just so beautifully meta that once you've seen both, your mind will just go HNNNNGGGOHMYGAWDYES. I've always loved Miyazaki's ability to make strong female protagonists, and talking cats ;)

TL;DR: IS GOOD MOVIE, 10/10 WOULD WATCH AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

PS - you can get every single movie for 35$ (what I did)
http://www.amazon.com/Collection-English-Language-Director-Miyazaki/dp/B00F2ISV2E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1412227981&sr=8-6&keywords=miyazaki

u/smashedkitten · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Sounds like the kittens have good taste.

Unkle D is an old meanie & likes to inflict AWESOME taste upon her minions. If they enjoy watching movies, I would totally get this Studio Ghibli box set. It's not primes, but i got mine in less than a week, i think 4 days.

They're so enchanting and empowering for girls & not the usual princessey type movies. There's a film in there for everyone. I watch these movies every day. The set is a little, um, bootleggey, arrr. But for kids, and for me, and for the price, who cares. If yr not into that, i'd suggest getting them one of the Miyazaki films. I gave the set to my nieces & nephews for xmas (ages 2 - 10 & adults too). They all love at least one of the movies. Muahhhaa!!!

Here's my breakdown. I'm listing the appropriate age to FIRST see the movie. Cos i still watch these every day & i'm, um, 47.

(*)* indicates one of my faves

Disc 1:

Laputa (Castle in the Sky), ages 6+

Grave of the Fireflies, 13+ (honestly beautiful, but painful. I've only seen it once cos it's so intense.)

Whisper of the Heart, 11+

Disc 2:

Mononoke 6/7+

Totoro 2+ (this will be my kid's first movie)

Nausicaa 10+

Disc 3:

Kiki's Delivery Service 5+

Porco Rosso - 10+

Disc 4:

Cat Returns, 10+

Howl's Moving Castle, 7+

Tales from the Earthsea - 8+

Disc 5:

Spirited Away, 6+

Ponyo, 4+

Yamadas - kinda adult. i don't think kids would much like it

Disc 6:

Pom Poko, 7+

Arrietty, 6-8+

*Poppy Hill 6-8+

Hey nicely done Caleb! I’m sure as a gamer parent youre already aware of some of the awesome speech games/activities out there, so I don’t wanna overstep my bounds here! However, if he responds to matching games I’d suggest checking out some of the Super Duper Inc./ Webber Illustrated sets of cards! I’d start with the “Minimal Pairs” deck because they’re perfect for some of his phonological speech errors.

Here’s an amazon link to a $20 deck: Webber Illustrated Phonology "Fronting" Minimal Pair Card Deck - Super Duper Educational Learning Toy for Kids https://www.amazon.com/dp/1586503928/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4W5YAbYTQSCGJ

Great video!

u/gadget_uk · 4 pointsr/space

I think Scratch is the most well known and they have a good section for parents - they seem well aware that this is likely to be a learning experience for the grown ups too. Once they progress from there you will find literally hundreds of places to expand on the basics.

If your kids are bit more practically inclined then there are some great kits you can get with mini-computers like the Raspberry Pi or there are games which are a sneaky way to teach them coding concepts without necessarily realising it. Something like this for example.

There are also some in-browser game sites that teach programming concepts like this one. A lot of these use similar methods to Scratch so it's a good way to reinforce the learning in a fun way.

u/Schwartz_the_Younger · 1 pointr/boardgames

Your welcome! Yeah this isn’t a game specifically for help with speech development. It’s just the game Caleb wanted to show off.

Further up in the comments u/RansomMan suggested a game that may be useful.

Hello versaKT,

In reply to your comment to me...

Your original comment was

"That flat out guarantees you're paying more than if you bought directly from Amazon."

is why I brought up (again) that I paid less on Ebay for the same product sold on Amazon, and through the same vendor too. This is why I sent the links, 'cause you kind of stated that I was a dope and probably paid more. - Nope, not so, I paid less, and those links are proof.

---------------------------------------------

Now to address another question that you directed to me regarding the 'free shipping'.

I disputed their call on violations, stating that my reviews were on full price products and that they should have the AVP banner. I have attached (or rather copied) another email from Amazon to me.

Below the email is a screenshot of the entire invoice in question, for all the products on the order. Please note that after the $17.81 deduction is strictly the 'free freight' that is automatically applied on an amount that exceeds their order minimum (and available to "everyone and their dog's groomer's cousin's septic service gets free shipping every day") - but apparently these rules don't apply to me.

Hello,
We removed the Amazon Verified Purchase badge from the reviews for your product because the reviewers received a free or deeply discounted product in exchange for their reviews.
We have noticed that a promotion $$ 17.81 applied towards shipping the product. Hence, the purchase has not been marked as a Verified Purchase.
A Customer Review marked with "Amazon Verified Purchase" means the reviewer purchased the item at Amazon and didn’t receive it at a deep discount.

This is the screenshot of this particular invoice: Please note the $17.81 (promotion) was the applied free freight. First these were stripped of the AVP banner, than later Amazon decided that these products were all considered promotions, and therefore violations.

I bought a real Pandora’s box 6. You can add ROMs to it. I found a set called Community Edition. It added like 1300 new ones along with video previews.
I’m happy with my device.
I bought the 8 button edition. I’d recommend getting the 6 button version u less you want to use it as a joystick.

As another former mormon, I'd say don't worry too much about them being mormon. Board games would be great, depending on how young the kids are. This sonofabitch mesmerized everyone when we first got it and kept my mormon family alive on many road trips.

If you want to gift like a mormon would, then make them a plate of various baked goods ;)

Maybe not quite old enough, but when she is this toy is a hit with my LO that gets bored easily. He's a stage 5 clinger, so I can't put him down and let him play by himself, but hopefully soon he'll grow out of it. Its a great toy to suction cup to their highchair tray or one of those floor seats with a tray.

Yeah the concert I went to was filled with people holding up their phones recording instead of living in the moment. I know to some degree people did in the past too but it felt like a much larger ratio.

I really enjoy how Japanese concerts do things as there's often organized fan chants and waving around pen lights in patterns to the music instead of just holding up a phone.

If they don't already have one of the Viva Pinata games consider that! They're so cute and definitely spark some imagination!

For Rylee, my first thought was graphic novels if she's never tried them. My cousin loved A Wrinkle in Time even though he'd already read the book. Ghosts is very popular, too.

For Trinity, my first thought was a Bop It for some reason! Or maybe this gymnastics coloring book?

I'm unsure about whether or not Amazon JPN ships to Germany, for ex. I've only heard Americans say they've successfully shipped from there (myself included), so it's worth a check. International shipping is $10, but Amazon JPN has sales on the Meets so it makes the shipping no biggie. In fact, the sales sometimes makes it cheaper to buy from there+shipping versus anywhere else (ie. My Meets Sanrio was $60 TOTAL vs ebay which, at the time was $70+shipping). You also get customer service in ENGLISH.

If not for both the Meets / On, Japan You Want seems to be the popular go-to site to buy (yes, shipping is hella expensive!)

Another place for both the Meets / On would just be ebay tbh Anywhere else is super expensive, IMO. Shipping for other places sometimes makes the cost more than what it actually costs.

IN SUMMARY: I would check out if Amazon JPN can ship to you for the Sanrio. For the On, you'll probably have to use Japan You Want or ebay.

u/cmaddog111 · 3 pointsr/Parenting

how long is the drive?

When we travelled with our 10 month old, we found the following helped:

A hanging toy on the seat. This is the one we bought

A remote/phone toy. Our son always loves going right for our phones or the remote control so we bought this

I dont think movies are a good idea, as they'll get bored relatively quickly because they can't really make sense of what is happening.

If your 11 mo can sleep in the car seat, plan on long stretches during naptime or night. Its best to travel while they sleep for everyone.

Our longest drive was 6 hours, and we did a 2 hour drive at naptime, stop to feed, 1-2 hours awake, stop to feed/roam around outside (for like an hour, gotta give him energy burning time), nap time again for the last 2 hours or so.

u/HopelessSap27 · 1 pointr/cade

Hmmm...I think I might go with Pandora; the games are all easily loaded on, it comes in a single package, and the emulation seems decent. Yeah, it might be a little lazy, especially since I already have a couple ROMS on my computer, but it's convenient. :D Plus, I found this on Amazon, which I've verified IS a legit 3-A device, and I can get it without the ridiculous shipping. XD

When I was maybe 4 I had a Teddy Ruxpin doll. My grandma would put it on my dresser by my bed at night and I guess that it started running low on batteries because it would randomly start "talking" in the middle of the night, except it was like this low evil voice and not saying actual words (you know how toys make possessed sounding noises when the batteries are running down). It kept doing this and scaring the crap out of me.

But then one night I had a "dream" (except I was sure that it was real and not a dream) that Teddy got off the dresser and came in my bed and bit my hand. I woke up crying and scared and telling my grandma Teddy Ruxpin bit my hand, except ... my hand hurt really bad in the spot I'd "dreamt" he bit it and had red marks on it. Still creeps me out to this day, but at the time I was sure this doll had bit me. Lol. :)

A lot of toys and apps that teach coding to little kids actually teach logic. Which is great.

Are you on Instagram? A lot of TVIs (teachers of the visually impaired) share their ideas there for tactile games, books, etc. A lot of them make stuff on their own.

Here are a few to get you started: [@mrsbyrnetvi] (https://www.instagram.com/mrsbyrnetvi/), [@youvegotbraillellc] (https://www.instagram.com/youvegotbraillellc/) and [@whyeyeteach] (https://www.instagram.com/whyeyeteach/).

There's also [@paths.to.literacy] (https://www.instagram.com/Paths.To.Literacy/), which often has good ideas. And the [#TeacherOfTheVisuallyImpaired] (https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/teacherofthevisuallyimpaired/) hashtag.

And one actual idea - do you have [Bop It] (https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-Gaming-B7428-Bop-It-Board/dp/B01ALHAJ20/ref=pd_sbs_21_t_0/130-6949372-7702505?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01ALHAJ20&pd_rd_r=560ae70e-d06f-4203-9083-1a857e9870cc&pd_rd_w=BXIov&pd_rd_wg=aT22T&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=69JD80YKQT0FZ749RABH&psc=1&refRID=69JD80YKQT0FZ749RABH) in your country? It's an electronic game with buttons and levers that gives you commands (e.g., "pull it," "push it," etc.). He may enjoy that...

Regarding the speed, you could get a transmitter that has the ability to set end-stops for the throttle, (many but not all have this ability) so that the max speed is limited for her.

I bought my 6 year old a Traxxas summit 1/16, but replaced the transmitter with a cheap one off eBay with throttle trim.

Here is one off Amazon with such feature:
Fly Sky #GT3B-2.4G Flysky FS-GT3B Digital 3CH 2.4Ghz TX & RX LCD Transmitter & Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LP1LYAI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GwfqDb2XCF2TW

Ones that have model memory are nice because you can have one memory slot for You and one for her, the only difference being the speed setting. (Which is what I do )

(I’m also assuming you have one with a replaceable RX, but I’m not sure if one’s that aren’t ‘hobby-grade’ will work with this suggestion, and since I don’t know what you actually bought it may or may not work). Also, you ought to post a budget so we have a guideline

Dump the AM radio and pick up something newer, also keep the antenna wire AWAY from the power leads on the ESC/Motor. You do not want your antenna anywhere near your motor leads for best signal.

The ones from PVPfilmworks were the official aqours in LA ones that you had to preorder online. These you picked up in front of the Microsoft theater. The Generic lights(same brand just anime expo versions) were sold in front of the Microsoft theater(right next to aqours penlight pickup)

I ordered mine from Amazon Japan when it came out, with whatever the cheapest, standard shipping was (roughly $10 I think), and it got to me 2 days after it shipped on release. They still have it Ships from and sold by Amazon, and says International Shipping averages 3-6 days, total price shipped USD63.30.

If you don't care about getting the official merch ones, you can buy lightsticks of the same brand on Amazon (or from link2110 below): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JFOY9Q2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are the same. These change color. Both are the Luke/Anakin hilt.

They are permanently attached to the mounting plate and about half to a third the size of a regular lightsaber. My problem with them is that they are battery only, and they only stay on for like 15 minutes.

BTW it's this: http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Milton-Star-Lightsaber-Light/dp/B00339QX6A

Well, I tried to find something that would ship fast. It was damn impossible. But I sent Logan this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AV8XBGG/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It will arrive on Tuesday. I paid for 1 day shipping...but it didn't seem to matter.
