I can help with this one! First off, good on you for making a lifestyle change! A few points and suggestions to start:


I feel like for you grain bowls/grain salads might be very good! They're extremely versatile, healthy, and can be tailored by season or cuisine type (Mediterranean, Mexican, Asian), with lighter vegetables, or heavier if you're looking to have a more substantial meal. I often make these for my husband for something healthy but filling enough so it doesn't feel boring or that he's not eating something fun and delicious. They also generally hold up very well if you prep them the night before (which I do). Some things to add to the bowl:


-tons of misc raw vegetables/fruit (shaved carrot, avocado, tomato)


-cheese (I prefer goat, feta, or blue cheese depending on what I've made)


-roasted vegetables (think sweet potato, cauliflower, beets, brussels sprouts)


-herbs (I usually have scallions and parsley, so I'll chop some up and throw it in)


-chickpeas or black beans


-protein of choice (leftover steak from previous dinners, chicken, turkey, shrimp, salmon, tofu)


-greens of choice (romaine, spinach, kale, arugula, mixed greens)


-grain of choice (quinoa, lentils, faro, wheat berries, brown rice)


-nuts (great for crunch factor)


-Some sort of dressing: drizzle of olive oil and squeeze of lemon, or a different kind of dressing, like tahini, homemade vinaigrette, or peanut. Usually I meal-prep the grain of choice at the beginning of the week, have a roast chicken to use for misc purposes (these salads, sandwiches, or plain by itself), and roast whatever vegetables I plan to use for the week.


I'd recommend staying away from bottled dressings, especially thick ones like the french dressing you described. That is a calorie bomb. It may not be an easy transition to a homemade dressing since that's not what you're used to, but loading up your salad with other amazing flavors may ease the transition. If you're worried about time for prep, you can make a cup's worth of dressing and keep in the fridge for a week or so (keep in mind that olive oil with coagulate in the fridge, so it made need some time to warm up before portioning...or you can do what I do and leave it on the counter, but covered).

As for other recipes, I am obsessed with this oven roasted greek stuffed pita recipe from Budget Bytes. I'll use this all week long as a snack, in a pita, over couscous, etc. I recommend adding zucchini to the mix (I don't like eggplant, so I use it in place of). The leftovers are incredible and suits very well for lunches.


That's excellent you bought containers, especially if they're all the same type (no more going crazy trying to find lid partners). I tend to use these personally, it helps that they're relatively inexpensive, as it's not the end of the world if one doesn't make it back home. I use these for partitioning dressing or sauce.

A pill bottle is generally good enough but if your stuff is a bit dank you're going to want to get something a little better. I know that when I put my stuff in a pill bottle the smell leaks just enough to be noticeable, but again it really depends on the quality of your dank. I keep my stuff in a TightVac container and it works very well. No smell at all.

That being said, you might want to consider keeping your weed outside your dorm if possible. If you have a car, keep it in there. That way, in the unlikely event you are busted and your dorm is searched, they won't find anything except maybe some paraphernalia.

AVB doesn't have a very strong smell. A pill bottle will work fine, I use a glass jar because it's pretty to watch it fill up.

All vapes produce a different amount of smell, but generally it isn't too bad. Some people claim vapor doesn't smell like weed, but that's not really true. If you're inside and not doing anything to help with the smell, it is going to be recognized as weed. But, if you're outside, the only people that will likely smell it is anyone who walks by right after you exhale. Typically nobody will even care if they do smell it. I have been bitched at once while vaping outside, so some people do care, but I say fuck em. It's outside, having the world smell exactly the way you want is an unreasonable expectation, and vapor is not a pungent enough smell to make a big deal over.

If you want to vape inside you're going to need something to help with the smell. I use a smokebuddy and it works pretty good at reducing the amount of smell that you're exhaling. But, your room is still going to end up smelling if you have a medium to long sesh. Don't fear, this smell is easily countered by a candle or maybe two if you have a really long sesh. I'm paranoid so I also have a wax warmer that I leave running most of the time to deal with any residual smell.

With all that combined, you shouldn't run into any problems vaping inside. My RA actually came by our room (for unrelated reasons, to talk to one of my roommates) last night without me knowing. I was taking huge rips in my room the whole time she was in our living room lol. She didn't mention anything about a "funny" smell so I'm guessing my method must be working well enough.

It should be noted though, that you should absolutely never grind your weed in your dorm. In the 2 years I've been vaping inside, the one time I've had an RA come knocking is when I ground up a decent amount indoors. It smells a lot, magnitudes more than vaping, but you don't even really think about it at the time since you're not getting stoned while doing it.

Speaking as someone who lives in a small SF studio apt...

In addition to your excellent recommendation on varied sizes of containers, I have this 100 clear ziplock bags set as well as a variety of larger bags in varying sizes. So if I've got something with little accessories, I'll toss those accessories in tiny ziplock bags, then put them in a larger ziplock bag shared with the main item when I store it on a shelf or a container. For example, I do this with my medicine cabinet / toiletries. I organize stuff into ziplock bags by function ("sinus / cold", painkillers, GI, etc) and then toss them in the closet in a small box, to avoid clutter in my cramped bathroom and keep only things I use routinely close at hand.

Some of my cleaning and organizing is motivated by dust mite allergies - but ultimately I'm working on a long-term solution to that. So I'm getting immunotherapy to become resistant to allergens and also use a dehumidifier to kill the dust mites.

I also keep an inventory of the items that I really liked. If I bought it retail, I'll find it online. That way, I can sell or junk something with the peace of mind that I can buy it again when I need it.

I do the typical things to minimize possessions: I have a few merino wool items that I wear most often, have a single bankers box for files with almost nothing it it (scan), no desktop computer, store very few physical books, and so on.

For my sleeping area, I use this cheap Zinus frame and store a bunch of stuff under it. That gives me extra storage and it's also cheap and easy to replace I do a long move. For my bed itself, I use a Sleep Number bed - it's easy to pack it into the back of a sedan, and you can customize the firmness to get to the "medium-firm" which clinical trials have demonstrated to be the best.

My desk/dining table is public white 42" high dining table which allows me to stand if I want; these 29.5" Bar Stool fit and store nicely.

As someone said, cable management is the key. Also ergonomics is really important, so make sure you and he find the prefect chair. The desk can be pretty much anything that won’t get in the way.
Ideal for you may be putting the PC on the floor under the desk, and mounting the screen to the wall. A good wall mint can easily tucked back or swung out. Finding a great way to store his items (like his headset) would also be a good way to stay organized.

In my studio I got lucky with storage but I know that I would get this bag holder as well as collapsible kitchen essentials. A slim trash can helps. If your bathroom has no storage, something like this can help. Hang your spices on the cabinet. Use this in the shower if you need more space. XD I use command hooks near my front door to hold my keys and daily jacket. :)

Can you think of a less glamorous woodworking project?

I wanted a cupboard bin that re-uses carrier bags (something like this but couldn't find one that would fit in my narrow cupboards..) so I made my own as a good excuse to try some dovetail joints by hand.

Main lessons learned:

• Don't use construction lumber. Cutting with the dovetail saw was ok, but chiselling was a nightmare.. too brittle and weak. Luckily only had to throw away one piece which had split.
  
  
• I need a workbench. Any suggestions on a bench for using handtools when the only place I have to work is the garden? Maybe next time I'll just have to stack more layers of MDF on the trestles.
  
  
• It was quite satisfying to construct something without powertools or screws!

I love this ottoman though it is a bit above the price range.

I have limited cabinet space too and found that shelf racks like this are a great way to add extra space.

Hanging storage solutions are helpful too, like this towel rack and storage bin. I also like to hang infrequently used cooking utensils on the back of my cabinets with command hooks.

My mom uses the magnetic one for a 60” wall hanging and it works pretty well. Plus, love the use of removable command products.

I remember watching the demo for hang-it dang-it at a quilt show and I was amazed. But I don’t remember now HOW it works.

I’ve also used these Command Spring Clip hung in a row. I use 2 for smaller wall hangings but 3-5 should be great for larger wall hangings

I've found this and this to be helpful on the shelves where it's difficult to see what might be behind the things in front.

I tend to use a lot of rectangular Lock & Lock containers. They stack up easy on the other shelves.

Honestly I didn't even know refrigerator containers existed. How practical, I always seem to struggle to keep my fridge organized.

What size and shape are you going for? Form factor, more than anything else determines what kind of batteries you can use. For long life, you're going to be looking at the larger cylindrical Li-ion cells: 18650, 21700, and 26650. In a large form factor, you might have multiple of those.

I'd actually suggest going for two lights. One should be a right-angle light that can be used both handheld and as a headlamp, which should have a diffuse, floody beam so you can see everything around you and avoid stepping on snakes, etc.... I suggest the Zebralight H600Fc.

The other should be more focused to see far away. One of my most used for that has been the Acebeam L16. Use coupon code "reddit" for a discount, or "zakreviews" to get a discount and give me a kickback. Go for 5000K for more natural color and less backscatter. I wish they came in 4000K.

You can bring as many spare 18650s as you need. These waterproof match holders are a good way to carry them when they might get wet. This charger is a good option, assuming you don't want to do all your charging with the Acebeam's USB port.

Any products from 3M like these. On their website, the 3M website, they have coupons for different items and a list of places you can them. I use these clips for my hat collection so they can hang around my room and not just sit in my drawer. They really do what they say they will in the commercials too. They do come off nice a clean and no residue. I have some of the hooks that they have and they works great. 5 stars the whole way round for their products.

You say they are already dry, but I wonder if with whatever adhesive you use you let them dry together with a Brown Sugar Bear, or something similar.

In my mind the balancing act is between enough glue for them to stick, but not enough for messy edges, and it drys fast enough that the moisture doesn't warp the pieces.

I'm thinking drying them with the glue/adhesive on larger pieces of terracotta like the bear might be ideal. (Do you have any old gardening pots hanging around?)

If you are able/allowed, you could install pull out basket/"drawers". I use a coat closet for my pantry now and have a big lightweight plastic basket on the highest shelf storing seldom used paper good items. I also have some modular stacking basket shelf units because the coat closet only had the one upper shelf. (Like this, this, and this.)

I used to have a fixed pantry like yours though, and I mostly organized via baskets (see above), Rubbermaid dry storage, and things like this and this. Plastic bags and foil and stuff, I kept on a skinny laundry/pantry cart tucked in a weird nook in my kitchen. Now I keep those in a cabinet I don't have another use for.

I also have a few organizing basket things from IKEA, look online at their storage systems. Fixed pantries can be hard, get out your measuring tape and good luck!

My family would add chopped green olives and smoked bacon to the filling.

Also, adding some ketchup to both the filling and the gravy rounds out the flavor quite nicely.

I am undecided if I prefer roux for the gravy, or whether I'd rather go for corn starch. I think, in the big picture, the roux overpowers the gravy a little bit and this is one of the cases, where corn starch actually makes for a more interesting gravy. But your preference could differ. I have seen both.

Oh, and as far as the Spaetzle are concerned, seeing you use the ready-made product makes my German soul writhe. Making Spaetzle batter is so super trivial. It takes almost no time over using the instant product, and it is so much tastier. You can mix it by hand in less than a minute.

I use a 1:1 blend of regular flour and fine-ground semolina flour (not the coarse-ground variety you usually see in most super markets). I add some salt and a good dash of evaporated milk. Then keep adding whole eggs until you get a thick batter. Whisk until smooth and slightly "creamy" looking. (note, you'll find different variations of this basic recipe online; this is just the one that I like).

Now comes the tricky part, if you are a purist, you use a cutting board and a knife to drop Spaetzle noodles into boiling water. If you are less nimble with your fingers, use a Spaetzle press instead. It looks just like a ricer, but it has bigger and irregular shaped openings.

Boil for a minute or two until Spaetzle float to the top. Drain and coat with melted butter and maybe a quick cheese sauce (parmesan cheese, evaporated milk, ...).

After I saw this post yesterday, I looked at the cushions at the top of my HD600 and noticed an indentation where they've been resting on my headphone stand. So I realize I need to get a new stand with a thin rod that will fit in between the 2 middle cushions on the headband.

That's cool. The shallow lid definitely allows you to see the miniatures while they are on a shelf. If you pair that with something like This to maximize shelf space I can see that being viable.

These things are pretty useful. They are made of terra cotta, and you just soak them in water and then leave them in the bag.

Get one of these and put labels on the different courses. It will make your freezer seem like a chef on demand. Sometimes I even forget what I have in there from a couple of months ago. Pleasant surprise.

I prefer the whirley-pop, which I believe -- as a popcorn enthusiast -- is the best way to make popcorn. also, buy good popcorn and keep it air-tight! the secret to fluffy popcorn is (a) medium-high heat and (b) NON-dry popcorn. the moisture in the popcorn is what causes the explosion. buy the freshest corn you can and keep it in a sealed jar. I got this container for herb.

My Chromium Crusher works well for grinding as well as storing kief.

The tin holding my ABV/stems is from a sampler of e-liquid from Halo. I use the lid to hold the freshly ground herb before vaping.

My gf gave me a little green pill holder she had which works well for storing the seeds I find. You never know when you might be able to grow in the future.

I have this brown sugar bear and it works pretty well. It’s not perfect, eventually if you don’t rehydrate it the sugar will still get hard, but it works well enough for me!

I would suggest a mix of the normal organizers that just sit on the shelf like these.

And then this style as well which installs drawers on the bottom of each shelf.

It doubles your fridge capacity by adding the hanging drawers and all the heavy stuff can stay in organizers so its easy to sort through.

Nice, I've done something similar! I just put my microwave on top of the fridge, though. I have a door from my dining room to kitchen so I put one of these on one side and a coat rack on the other side for my pans, cast iron, and wok.

I ended up with a large fridge binz and liked it enough that I also ordered a small one. I moved the pitcher out of the fridge and just made sure I had some ice ready, so now I don't have condiments in the crisper. I also tried something that was supposed to be a wheel out caddy, but it was too short and didn't roll well.

If you still use plastic grocery bags, I've had this simplehuman thing under my sink for 4 years so far. I haven't had any problem with smell, but I do throw it out pretty often. Maybe you should shoot for a smaller can to force frequent disposal so the stank doesn't build up?

We don't know how the roommate conversation went, beyond OP saying Mary called a meeting and explained her problem, and asked for their help. I doubt she offered this as a solution, but it's pretty reasonable to think that OP could at least make an alternate suggestions rather than just "no". Based on the content of the post I don't think she would've disagreed with this approach, and that she may have been willing to pay towards it, since further down she "agreed she'd pay for everything and that she was in the wrong."

Personally, I reuse old tissue boxes to make my own "dispenser". Holds a crap-ton.

get something like this for your food

I put a bunch of adhesive hooks (Command) on a not-prominent wall in our kitchen, to hang things like measuring spoons, whisks, and whatnot. Makes way more space in the drawers and I don't have to rattle around to find them.

Also, those kitchen cabinet shelf things changed my life.

Even after it's washed it probably still has some smell/residue seeped into the pores of the plastic. OP should invest in something like this instead

Wont work. Did the same thing and I had a whole Q smelling like bounce. If any thing can move from the inside of the bag out (smell) then dryer sheets can move into the baggie. I would sugggest getting a Tight-Vac or if you cant, get a Pyrex Brand Bowl. But you're asking for trouble with that sort of setup my dude.

Same, here, especially with Ralph's and Vons. About a year before the ban I even bought a plastic bag wall caddy and it made so many things nicer and easier... and now it doesn't work with the bigger, thicker ones.

I replied to OP and said that I actually asked my mom to send a bunch of the old, thin bags as packaging whenever she has to send something to me because she's in the midwest and still has more than she can use.

I'll make one addition of hanging it off the changing table from some clips so that you can drop them in whenever you are changing them.
