Buy yourself a decent bolt action .22 or a shotgun, a good 3-5" fixed blade knife, a blaze orange hat or vest, and a decent little first aid kit (don't forget a tourniquet).

Step 1: Take a hunters safety/education class.

Some states have classes exclusively for adults. This will give you some basic, but good info on gun/bow safety and state laws pertaining to hunting. In addition, they should have pamphlets that will outline the different hunting seasons, game animals, invasive species, and state/federal hunting areas.

These classes might also help you meet some more experienced folks who could bring you along or offer some valuable advice.

Step 2: Learn how to use your gear.

Your ability with your gear can mean the difference between success and failure on the hunt--and in some cases life and death (especially pertaining to your med kit).

Let's start with the rifle. I like bolt action .22's. You can get a very accurate gun and learn how to use it for very little money. Using a bolt action .22 with iron sights forces the shooter to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship, building a solid foundation for the future.

I like the Savage MkII and the Ruger American.

With either rifle I'd recommend adding a peep sight and a regular 2 point sling.
Both are accurate and inexpensive rifles that you can shoot day in and day out for years.

You should be able to find a range with at least 50 yards to sight in (aka zero) your rifle. If you need guidance here, there are plenty of online resources, however, you'd do better to ask an experienced shooter for a hand. Be sure to use the same ammo for zero and hunting.

For shotguns you can't beat the versatility of a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Get either gun in 12 or 20 gauge. The beauty of these two is that you are always a simple barrel change away from being able to shoot birdshot (birds small game) or slugs (everything else).

With a good .22 and a good shotgun, you should be able to hunt most wild game in North America. There are better calibers and rifles for specific hunting applications but those two will do it all.

What I don't recommend for hunting rifles/shotguns and why:

1 I don't like scopes (at first). Forcing yourself to learn on iron sights means you develop a firm foundation in the fundamentals. I remember wanting a scope for my .22 so bad, so my dad made me a deal. I had to kill 100 red squirrels or starlings and 10 groundhogs before he'd let me add a scope. It took me the better part of a summer to accomplish this but I walked away from that summer being able to put lead on just about anything within 150 yards of that little rifle.

2 I don't like autoloaders (at first). Simply because shooting a bolt gun means you have one, maybe two shots to get the job done. You learn to make ever shot count. Once you are proficient, go wild.

3 I don't like tactical/tacticool rifles for beginners or really hunting for that matter. They are usuallly auto loaders (see #2), heavier, and more expensive. You don't feel so bad taking your $230 Savage through brambles, tripping over roots and dropping it, or leaning it up against a rusty fence post. If you don't trust me, look at what the professional hunters use.

Extras: buy a quality, brass rod cleaning kit and some decent gun oil (or CLP) for deep cleans. Keep a [Bore Snake](.22 .223 .25 CAL Bore Snake Cleaner Kit Cord Rope Brass https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JKSNVTK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XRfGzbN7P8Z58) in an extra pocket for the times you get dirt or debris in the barrel.

Get yourself a good knife. I always have my pocket knife (a CRKT M21-02G) and a skinner when I'm hunting.

For a pocket knife use what suits you. For a skinner I really like knives like the Schrade Old Timer 158 for general skinning and this blade from Ontario Knife.

You also need a good way to keep your knives sharp. I've had a lot of luck with the. [Lansky System](Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B8IEA4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_85fGzbBRJDH6K).

Last, please get yourself a decent med kit. Too many people have died in the woods due to a knife accident or gun accident that could have been easily treated.

You can easily make yourself a basic kit or buy one like [this](Ever Ready First Aid Meditac Tactical Trauma IFAK Kit with Trauma Pack Quickclot and Israeli Bandage in Molle Pouch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GAAMS2M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_iagGzb76NGQZJ) pre-made.

This kit has everything you need except for a tourniquet like [this](Tourniquet - (Black) Recon Medical Gen 3 Mil-Spec Kevlar Metal Windlass Aluminum Lightweight First Aid Tactical Swat Medic Pre-Hospital Life Saving Hemorrhage Control Registration Card (1 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ETMVQOI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fcgGzbSAMKAWS) and an Israeli Bandage like [this](Ever Ready Bandage Battle Dressing First Aid Compression Bandage, 6 Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003DPVERM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1cgGzb9C9H5WP).

You can learn to use all this stuff over the course of an hour via YouTube. You would do better to find a nurse, paramedic, or Navy Corpsman to give you a crash course in the use of the contents of your IFAK. If you can find a Corpsman, they are probably the best for this kind of thing. Lots of good tips and tricks for field use...plus you can pay them in beer.

Don't forget to add extras like any medication you might need, chapstick, Bayer aspirin (good for headaches and heart attacks), a little tube of antibacterial ointment, and a couple fabric bandages.

If you won't carry this on your person, keep it in your vehicle.

For good practice I like squirrel and rabbit hunting. Makes you consider a lot about safety, a lot about taking only the good shots, plus they are easy to clean and good to eat.

Last learn how to use what you kill.

If you are hunting varmits, that is one thing. I shoot invasive species (when legal), and varmits that are causing a nuisance and that is reason enough for me.

If you are hunting anything else for exclusively for sport, please use it. You can use some of the books referenced earlier to learn about skinning and field dressing. I like to watch shows like Meat Eater, to learn better ways to use the meat I've harvested. Once you get into cooking game meat, you will wonder why you ever went to the store for meat.

Just don't forget that hunting is about stewardship and learning. It's a lifelong pursuit that is very rewarding.

Always be safe, always be ethical, always be responsible, always have fun.

Edit: If you ever find yourself in south central or southwest Michigan, I can help you with anything I've outlined above. I'm a lifelong hunter, a lifelong shooter, a small arms instructor in the military, a certified combat lifesaver, and a decent game cook.

The best one is a mirror and a willingness to do lots of self-portraits and anyone else who you can convince to sit for you for a couple of hours.

A good replica skull, preferably one that's been cast from an actual human skull, is useful to have on hand for practice. Nowhere else in the body do the underlying bones have as much impact as what we see on the surface as in the head. (Well, maybe the hands, because of all the sticky-outy-finger bits.) One like this is what I'm talking about, not something you'd get at the Halloween store.

Plaster cast busts are a good source for a real-life model you can work from at any time and that won't move around on you. You miss out on the color, but they're still good for doing value studies. Just look for 'plaster cast bust' on Amazon, they've got tons of them. I used one of the Torino mini head of David ones for this painting the other day.

Steve Huston's lecture on head construction is excellent. It's a full, 3 hour lecture, including time for drawing.

When you have a good grasp of the basic Loomis and/or Huston style of head construction, it's worth digging into Reilly head abstractions; these two videos - part one and part two - break it down pretty well. I've not found a book yet that covers it as well as that; Reilly himself never wrote it down, so all the writing we have on it is based on things his students have written about it, so there's no one, definitive resource. People refer to it as being 'the gesture of the head', but personally I think that's a confusing way to describe it because it's not really the same sort of gesture that we mean when we're talking about gesture drawing of the figure. Personally I think a better way to think of Reilly is that it describes a) the way the parts of the head flow together and relate to one another and b) a more organic way of viewing the planes of the head than an Asaro head, though Asaro heads are pretty nifty!

I'll second or third a pulse oximeter. Maybe get a couple, because they will be lost at some point. Hospitals usually have them as well, but they tend to be bigger and bulkier and don't really fit into pockets nicely. It's nice to have your own (write your name/number on it in permanent marker!). Also a gift card for scrubs is a great idea.

A badge lanyard:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UE1QGGC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/Lola-Lung-Retractable-Respiratory-Specialist/dp/B00KIOY5EU/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1466862284&sr=1-1&keywords=lola+lung

Badge ID pocket reference cards, they have tons of different ones and you can get them either vertical or horizontally: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009BE9BCY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/Rapid-ID-Obstructive-Restrictive-Horizontal/dp/B00N33A8P8/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1_a_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1466863446&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=abg+badge+id+card+pocket+reference

Also blank ones (you can use a dry erase marker or ballpoint pen and reuse - might be helpful to jot notes or keep codes for various rooms handy): https://www.amazon.com/Blank-Plastic-Horizontal-Pocket-Reference/dp/B00BNYK05M/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1466863602&sr=8-1&keywords=blank+badge+id+card+pocket+reference

Or maybe just a pocket guide: https://www.amazon.com/Respiratory-Notes-Therapists-Pocket-Daviss/dp/0803629222/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1466865465&sr=8-4&keywords=respiratory+therapist

A lot of people where I work use these things: https://www.amazon.com/Mitten-Medical-Professional-Stethoscope-Scrub-Lock/dp/B0187VBMY6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466863731&sr=8-2&keywords=respiratory+therapist+accessories

If you buy a pricey stethoscope, I would advise you to spend $10-15 extra and have it engraved. Nice things have a way of "disappearing" if misplaced. You can also buy something like this, but keep in mind they are removeable: https://www.amazon.com/Littmann-L2170-Adults-Stethoscope-Black/dp/B000SKF9VW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466864605&sr=8-1&keywords=stethoscope+name+tag

There are also novelty gifts like:
http://www.visualanatomy.com/shop/default.aspx
https://www.amazon.com/Super-Respiratory-Therapist-Shirt-Large/dp/B01EPEX1X4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466865465&sr=8-1&keywords=respiratory+therapist
Also novelty coffee cups, pens, markers, lunchboxes, and jewelry.

Also, a student can never have too much practice for the boards, and the earlier you start preparing the better. This is just one of many, many practice guides: https://www.amazon.com/Comprehensive-Respiratory-Therapist-Exam-Review/dp/0323067018/ref=sr_1_49?ie=UTF8&qid=1466865661&sr=8-49&keywords=respiratory+therapist

Other thoughts: maybe a subscription to Audible.com - there are TONS of respiratory books available. They might not have time to read additional books on top of required reading for school, but anyone can listen to an audiobook while driving, running errands.

Letters of appreciation as another has mentioned is always a great idea. The job tends to be thankless and without a lot of information given after we resolve situations.

If you're set on an actual gift, everyone loves flashlights. They come in handy and get used constantly. Something like the Streamlight Stylus is great idea accompanied by a hand written letter would be great.

If you're buying a lot of them something like this might be a good idea

A few strategies I use to get me past the "oh, I'll just have a bite" thoughts:

  1. I think hard about whether that treat is really the best use I can think of for those calories. Even thought SCD isn't a calorie-focused diet, ultimately you are still eating and burning calories. Usually the answer to that question is no--I might want a bite of something not on-diet, but when I think about it, I don't really like it so much that I have to have it.
  2. I mentally treat anything off-diet during the week as if I were allergic to it. In a way, its not a terribly inaccurate way to think about those foods. Obesity isn't an allergy, but it has similarities--it's an over-reaction of the body's adipose cells to certain foods that, for whatever reason, it can't handle in a healthy way. This also gives me a far more empathetic way of seeing my own weight issues and those of others -- being overweight isn't a necessarily moral failing of self control, any more than sneezing is. Both are just responses that one person has to a stimulus that doesn't impact other people.
  3. I add it to my running mental list of things I'll wait to indulge in until Saturday. For foods that will keep, I might literally save them until then. For others, it's more of a thing of "oh, mac and cheese, I haven't had that in awhile, I think I'll do that on Saturday!" Then, related to (1), I might think about where the absolute best mac & cheese I can find will be on Saturday, rather than whatever mundane version is in front of me at the moment.
  4. Occasionally, I'll actually have A BITE. The self control required on this is huge, but when faced with something special that can't be saved for Saturday, this allows me to enjoy something and then move past it. I try to be very present for that bite, and often, I'll enjoy the one taste more than I would've if I'd eaten a whole serving while, say, dividing my attention to conversation or my phone. Realistically, there are very few things that A BITE of will result in an appreciable blood sugar spike, especially during the course of a meal.
  5. I keep one of these on top of my fridge, and think about whether whatever I'm staring at in there is really worth carrying around some chunk of this with me: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J8FJQNA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

shoes: i buy whatever black slip-on style shoes are at tj maxx when i need a new pair. i don't have very sensitive feet.

watch: i get $2 silicone watches off ebay from china, they work fine and i can throw them away if i need to without feeling bad

pen lights: i get this pack off amazon and it lasts like two years http://www.amazon.com/Primacare-DL-9223-Disposable-Diagnostic-Penlight/dp/B003F13FMQ/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1458509318&sr=8-1&keywords=pen+lights

lanyards: it's best not to wear hangy stuff around your neck that someone can grab

scrubs: i like grey's anatomy tops and koi pants

stethoscope: i have a littman cardiology III and it works fine

i bought a bunch of stuff i didn't need when i was in nursing school because buying gear was a way i dealt with anxiety (like maybe i wouldn't be anxious if i felt like i was more prepared, or whatever). i only have two nursing items that i feel like have genuinely made a big difference - i have a very tiny very bright flashlight that i use for putting in foleys in women (not for pupil checks) - all the flashlights they have on my unit are pretty weak and a really bright light helps me with foley placements because i have pretty bad vision anyway. and i use one of those dorky hip packs to hold my pens and scissors and alcohol wipes and IV caps and i can't imagine working without it.

When you clip the flap the open wound will be exposed, that’s why depending on the size and the depth it might be best to let a vet handle it and stitch it closed. The fact that it has a flap seems to me that it is more than a superficial scrape. Also the vet will be able to numb it before cutting it. When the flap sits there, it is dead tissue and serves as a breeding ground for bacteria. Often when you loosen it with saline and pick it up you’re going to find pus under there. If you wait the wound will ‘tunnel’ and work it’s way under and out to infect healthy tissue. I would definitely say take her to the vet and ask to watch. The skin flap removal is going to be painful and without a numbing agent, in my opinion, it’s not fair to her. Others probably disagree, but I baby my girls lol. Maybe ask your vet about observing some suturing, then you’ll have a good idea of what it entails. He might me open to giving you a script for xylocaine which can be filled at you local pharmacy and you can just purchase diabetic syringes there. Penicillin for injection can be purchased usually at your local feed store at your vet should be able to give you dosing instructions based on the size of your chicks.

If you learn suturing this is what I use. Haven’t found absorbable available to public, so these are removed after 10 days. Suture kit- I keep collapsible bowl of alcohol right there cause guaranteed I’m going to do something that breaks ‘sterile’. The extra curved forceps are invaluable- you don’t realize how tough chicken skin is until you’re trying to put a suture needle through it. These scissors are wicked sharp. If you have to cut a flap off or trip edges of a wound to suture cleanly, this does it quickly. Be careful I laid my finger open with them more than once. Great sewing scissors also lol.

I got an inexpensive tool bag to carry my stuff in. Then I just had the smaller bottles, put some of the gloves, droppers, etc. in a ziploc. And a couple of grocery bags to use for trash. Now I can grab it and go to coop and treat treat or at house but everything is at one place.

u/YouveGotAnts · 2 pointsr/EDC

On person? Small kit consisting of:

  • Compressed guaze
  • Cat Tourniquet
  • Nitrile Gloves
  • Couple random band-aids in different sizes

Skill-set wise I'm confident in my ability to not make things worse. I've taken several classes in first-aid and am first(worst?)-responder certified and have taken a couple additional classes.

The things I carry don't take up much space and are within the scope of my training. I am fortunate in that I live in the US and have ready access (most of the time) to advanced medical treatment via BLS/ALS and hospitals and I take that into consideration when thinking about what I carry on my person.

In my vehicle and my bag I carry a couple additional items that could be helpful were I to stumble upon a collision or something like that. My first responsibility is to my family (wife and children) and after that I'm willing to help where I can if necessary. I've also always reasoned that if I'm going to carry tools by which I can punch high-velocity holes in a person from a distance, I should be able to effectively provide aid to deal with those injuries.

ADC ADSCOPE

I've had some expensive scopes in my time. After 8+ years of nursing this just under $20 gem is my favorite. The ear pieces are fantastic and form a great seal: probably the most important part of a stethoscope. It also has a bell, which, if you want to listen to heart sounds, does make a difference. The quality is very good.

If I ever lose this scope I will buy another one. Can't seem to lose this one though, no matter how many times I leave it somewhere. It must be paraplegic.

You don't need an expensive scope. You need proper technique. Make sure the diaphragm has a good seal against the skin. Have the patient take a deep breath. Make sure the ear piece has formed a good seal in your ears to block out other sounds. That's all you need.

Agar agar powder. [US](https://www.amazon.com/Telephone-Product-Thailand-Powder-Ounce/dp/B01KMHY2OU/) [Europe](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Special-Ingredients-Premium-Gelatine-European/dp/B00EZMPMNE)

Always start with agar! And don't throw old fully colonized plates out. Some contaminants (e.g. mycogone, AKA wet bubble disease will only show up after full colonization (white blobs oozing yellow/orange fluid). and that one (mycogone) will fck up your grow hard, been there done that...

Light malt extract. [US](https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Light-Dried-Malt-Extract/dp/B007XYGBXQ/) [Europe](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Balliihoo-Light-Spraymalt-1Kg-Bag/dp/B0153BASSY/)

Also if you are in North America there are Glad mini rounds, they are used in the original Pasty Plate tek. They also have [430ml jars](https://www.flaschenbauer.de/einmachglaeser/sturzglaeser/sturzglas-430-ml-to-82) suitable as substrate containers

A pressure cooker. Good ones are a b**ch to find in Europe. I wouldn't buy [that one](https://www.ebay.de/itm/Pressure-cooker-17L-Stainless-steel-Made-In-Turkey-Largest-Size/133128864948) or similar constructed ones, they are complete s**t, build up next to no pressure and need ungodly amounts of water. I have two of them, but had to do some haphazard MacGyveresqe hacking to get them to sterilize properly, I'll bring that up later.

I also have a Fagor Alu 22 (22 liters, fits eleven quart bottles), but I think that model went out of production in 2017 without a replacement. IMHO the only sane option in Europe right now, would be to order a Presto from the US, they're ~80€ + 40€ shipping, so not that bad. [Presto 23 quart PC](https://www.amazon.com/Presto-Aluminum-23-Quart-Pressure-Canner/dp/B073NCFL2L/)

Also on US websites like shroomery, you'll always read something like "sterilize 90min @ 15 psi". Pressure cookers in Europe usually have no gauges and only go to 50-70 kPa (~7-10 psi). It isn't as bad as it sounds, since sterilization time isn't linear with pressure/temperature. I've found I can get away with 120 min sterilization time for grains, 75 min for PF sub and 30 min for agar.

Yeah I got it as a gift but I really like it. Simple black watchface, good tick to it, nice for taking pulses or glancing to check the time and it doesn't obscure your auscultation as long as it's high up enough on the tubing. Similar to this model and clips right onto the tubing. I've never seen anyone else with one, but I also haven't gotten made fun of for it yet, and it's been quite a while, so I'm calling it a win.

I actually found this one on amazon that is cheap and has great reviews on Amazon and YouTube. I’m hoping whatever it is is magnetic so I can tape a strong magnet to the camera head and just grab it that way. If not I’ll just use a grabber that I have. It’s about 4 feet long. Hopefully I won’t need to remove the vents from the dash to maneuver it. If I do, does anyone have info on how to do this properly?

u/citizensduty · 2 pointsr/medicalschool

While you're at it, get him a stethoscope tag with his name engraved on it. https://www.amazon.com/Littmann-L2170-Adults-Stethoscope-Black/dp/B000SKF9VW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495899808&sr=8-3&keywords=stethoscope+name+tag

Or, depending on where you buy it from, sometimes the stethoscope vendor has the option to engrave his name on the stethoscope itself: http://www.steeles.com/page/engraving

It would make a really great gift even better, because there's nothing worse than losing track of one of your most important pieces of equipment for lack of a good label.

Before someone says it, sanitary napkins or tampons are NOT the best thing for bullet wounds. I will copy and paste the post that I keep have to do every few weeks when reddit inevitably starts jerkin that circle:

If you have to improvise a wound dressing for gunshot and all you have are tampons, then yes. Stuff SEVERAL in the wound to compress the surrounding tissues and stifle bleeding/promoting coagulation.

THE REAL step number one for any severe bleeding is call 911 (or for medevac depending on your circumstances), then apply direct pressure, preferably with barriers like gloves, goggles, and mask in between you and the injured persons blood.

Tampons are not made to absorb the amount of flow that comes out of a GSW, and they are not sterile. Again they would not be the first choice for a GSW, but better than nothing.

First choice would be properly preparing by ordering these products and placing them in your first aid kid and/or range bag.

  1. First Aid Kit This one is adequate for multi-day trips and as a base to build on.

  2. Tourniquet Adequate, learn how to use it, and practice one-handed in case of disabling injury.

  3. Celox Injector for Penetrating Injury Good for stabs and very large pokes as well as GSW.

  4. Chest Seals Good for sucking chest wound to treat/prevent collapsed lungs.

Above all, learn and know First Aid and CPR, use the four (five) firearms safety rules, and avoid situations in which gunfire might be exchanged.

If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them.

I have never used a knockoff littmann, or seen one that I know of. I would be weary of a $10-15 stethoscope. You want something decent for school because you are just learning things like how to take a manual B/P, how to auscultate heart and lung sounds, etc and you want to be able to hear what you are listening for. I have used a cheap stethoscope (something like one of these) and it sucks. I had trouble getting a b/p because it was hard to hear.

You don't have to go all out and get a Cardiology III or anything, or even a littmann. There are other decent stethoscopes out there, but get one you can hear with. I used a littmann lightweight in school and it was decent and it only costs about 40 bucks on amazon. If you buy the right stethoscope now, you shouldn't have to buy a new one when you graduate, think of it as an investment. Just put your name on it so it doesn't walk away.

Here's the classic II in (what most nursing students use) in navy blue for $68.

Here's The lightweight for $39.99 in burgundy, the other colors are $44.

Here's an AdScope for $15-$18. I've never used one, but it has good reviews and I have heard of the brand before, so it might be worth a shot if you are truly that strapped for cash.

Above is all the basic stuff you need for this hobby, I might of missed something, but don't think so.

Get the models and paints from https://www.darksphere.co.uk/pgc.php?c=1106 as it could literally mean for example, in my case, I can buy 3 manticores(the thing with a load of rockets) for the price of 2 manticores from the offical site or shop of gamesworkshop.

Everything is about 30% cheaper than offical places but literally the same stuff.

Also, look on ebay daily as they have some great deals sometimes, also would really pay to get some cheap shitty model and practice on it, rather than getting some nice and new model and using it as practice.

Hope this helps:)

Sorry fellas, I've been caught up with school/homework. But not to worry, OP delivers..

  • Nexus 7
  • Nexus 5 - If you're thinking about getting this phone, just do it. I just switched from AT&T (iphone 4s) to Ting, and I couldn't be happier. I went from paying $50 a month, to under $25 with no drop in service..plus I got a month free (just for switching) and a sexy new phone. If you decide to try Ting out, use my referral link. We'll both get a $25 credit. Yay :)
  • Kershaw Cryo 1555Ti - One of the sexiest things I've ever had in my pants
  • "Remove Before Flight" Keychain - Makes it so easy to spot my keys or pull them from my pocket.
  • As for the Caduceus keychain, I purchased it on Etsy, but I can't remember the store..
  • Lucky Line 71101 Key Ring
  • [Casio Unisex MQ24-7B] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAYQU4/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - A simple, functional watch.
  • ADC ADLITE Disposable Penlight - Cheap. Dependable. Cool to play with.
  • Pilot G2 .38 & .7
  • Zebra .5 mechanical pencil. Not sure of the model (the number got rubbed off from usage), but I've had this pencil for over 6 years. The SAME one, and it's still going strong.
  • 3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. - THE LIGHTEST steth you'll ever wear. I've tried the cardiology 3 and various others, but after wearing them for >5-8 hours at a time, your neck starts to hurt. With this one, I have to check to see if I'm still wearing it at the end of the day. Yes, there IS a slight difference between the 3 and this one in terms of acoustics but to me, it's not worth the $100 markup and neck pain.
  • Zippo Regular Matte Pocket Lighter - I don't even smoke, but being able to create fire on the spot is what separates us from the animals, right?

If you guys have any more questions, I'll get to them when I can. Sorry again for the wait :)

I personally love my littmann light weight. Comfy on my ears and you can hear everything just fine. Plus 40$ on amazon and comes in a bunch of colors is nice. Had it since 2015 at this point. I got a little clock attachment with the seconds hand on it and people love to steal it since our ICU room does not have a clock so if you don't have a watch your SOL. Plus its LIGHT WEIGHT who needs neck problems, not me.

Off the top of my head, a good multitool like a Leatherman.

A scale with measuring tape. For making sure you are within a size limit or for bragging rights.

Bogagrip like grabber or Fish Gripper for handling fish.

Hemostat for extracting a deep hook.

A good hat, UV rated shirt, sunblock and mosquito/tick repellent. Maybe a backpack with water reservoir a la CamelBak. I also keep a small first aid kit and a hook removal kit just in case.

Dry bag if you are going to be on a boat or kayak. No one likes a water damaged phone.

Edit:

A folding net. Nothing is worse than having a good fish and losing because it too big to drag it up on the bank. I lost a good sized trout last week because I didn't have a net handy.

I have the ADC ADSCOPE 615 Platinum Professional Clinician Stethoscope with AFD Technology, 30.5 inch, Tactical. Forty bucks, handled and shipped. Best stethoscope I've ever used. Length is perfect for wrapping around neck and putting head in front scrub chest pocket to keep warm for use.

This one looks promising for a student, though.

I'll give you a tip on how to keep a stethoscope from being stolen, while I'm here (it happens to everyone). There are two places I keep my stethoscope - around my neck and on my dresser. It's always one of those two places.

Pulling ethernet cable will be easier without an RJ45 end on it, so you may invest in a crimper set, but you can buy pre-crimped cables and only cut one side off to save you from having to do both. Most all of the holes have likely already been drilled in your stud out to the doorbell location and have room in each hole to string a CAT cable through there. So then it comes down to trying to minimize the number of access holes you cut. You typically need one hole per stud bay, but sometimes you can get lucky and poke the cable through a stud bay and avoid needing another hole there, if the holes are inline and you just get lucky.

You might invest in a cheap phone borescope, and some fiberglass "fiberglass rods".

The piece is Ecce Animal by Dutch artist "Diddo". It was a commissioned piece, but he's unable to provide details about its worth or how much cocaine it required because he's under a non-disclosure agreement. Test results indicated it was between 15% and 20% pure.

Imagine you want to replace someone's skull with cocaine. Their skull suddenly disappears and they're left left with a cavity in their head for you to fill up with coke. But before you start pouring you want to know how big the cavity is to know how much it's gonna cost you.

You use this skull model as a reference. It's anatomically accurate, but it doesn't mention its volume, only its weight and that its made out of PVC. You know its weight is 2.1 lb (9.341 N) and the density of the material is [1.3g/cm^3](http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=pvc+density&a=
DPClash.MaterialEC.pvc-_
PVC.Molded--), so you use that to find its mass, 952.52 g, and its volume, 733 cm^3.

Your friend Wolfram happens to know about Class A drugs and tells you the density of cocaine, 1.216 g/cm^3. You figure you need 891.328 g, which is very specific, but you eventually find a dealer who's okay with it. Your total is $160,439.04.

TLDR $160,439.04

The responses you got were kind of dumb. Just buy a medical replica one off of amazon. I got mine for $40 and the only probably I have with it is that there's a dividing line where they stuck the top of the skull on. Not a big deal and it's easy to ignore when doing studies.

http://www.amazon.com/Medical-Anatomical-Quality-Classic-3-part/dp/B0077B3L42/ref=pd_sim_sbs_indust_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1JY13K4EYEQHGDS0XBEZ

That one's not bad for the price. Mine doesn't have the pop off top, but is otherwise quite similar. I don't like the whiteness of the teeth either. I couldn't find the exact one I have,

If you're going to shop around for them a bit, just be wary of the ones that are meant for decoration. They barely resemble human skulls and lack all of the finer details. Also, amazon is selling some skulls from a retailer called Nose Desert or Desert Nose. They look okay, until you look at the teeth. They look nothing like real teeth, and look like they just made a cast of a skull and stuck some weirdly shaped pieces of wood in the tooth spots.

Anything from a scientific or medical resource is going to be pretty good, but probably a bit more expensive. I think the one I linked is a good balance of the two, and it avoids all the annoying things, like the medical ones that have numbers or colours all over the different parts of the skull.

Just get a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope. Taking your own blood pressure is super easy to do, and both of those are quality instruments for much less than $150. I’m an EMT - we have monitors on our ambulance that read blood pressure, heart rate, can do EKGs, work as an AED... and the BPs are notoriously inaccurate. The most accurate reading will come from doing it yourself.

You don't want to be that brand new IFT EMT that shows up with a tactical bat belt with fanny packs, stethoscope holsters, raptors/shears, flashlights, penlights, and a pocket knife.

Your company will provide you with: pen lights, generic stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and disposable trauma shears. If you're working at a BLS IFT company, they should provide you with a pulse ox as well. If they do not, then you are not required to purchase one of your own.

You should bring: blue/back-ink pens (have a couple spares in your backpack), clipboard that you can store confidential documents in, a sharpie, and small pocket notepad. If you already own your own stethoscope, you can bring that, however, you do not need to go purchase a fancy stethoscope. At most, all you will use your stethoscope for as a BLS IFT EMT is for blood pressures and the occasional lung sounds, and the generic stethoscope your company provides will be able to do that. If you do decide to purchase your own stethoscope, I recommend not spending more than $50 on one. I personally recommend ADC Adscopes over Littman's (better bang for your buck in my opinion). I have the ADC 615 stethoscope in black tactical and greatly enjoy it.

You do not need to bring: a pocket knife (I've been in the field for almost four years and have never once needed a pocket knife for anything that trauma shears couldn't handle, though if you want to keep one in your backpack, all the power to you), fancy trauma shears (such as Raptors), any sort of pouches or first aid kits that attach to your belt (yes, I have seen new EMTs wearing these. It is completely unnecessary unless you are doing Special Events/Standbys), and weapons of any kind (tasers, pepperspray, etc). I had a new EMT trainee show up with pepper spray hanging off his belt once. Not a good look.

Good luck!

I used to use a Littman II Classic SE, and it was good. After losing/misplacing it on a flight last year, I decided to go with the ADC Adscope 615st (Tactical). This has become my favorite stethoscope by far. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/American-Diagnostic-Platinum-Edition-Adscope/dp/B000X7TKLK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hpc_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Q9YNDFZV6C6BPJ1R8QR

I like this one. Plus, it is not too heavy. Make sure you label it well.

u/nlh16 · 2 pointsr/flashlight

While I don't have a recommendation for a stylus light, as another student nurse I would recommend just getting a pack of cheap disposable penlights to get you through nursing school. You wont have to worry about using your nice light in a room that is on contact precautions and they provide more than enough light for examining wounds and other things.

u/Tug_Phelps · 6 pointsr/Edmonton

Amazon.

Do not get cheap ones.At the minimum get the Littman classic, or spend the extra money and go all out for a Cardiology, also made by Littman. While its "overkill" for nursing, the difference is noticeable.

200 bucks on amazon, and if you take care of them, they will last a very long time.

What the majority of other's have said, but with a link! Here is my stethoscope, it blew my shitty nursing school one out of the water: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Littmann-Lightweight-Stethoscope-2450/dp/B00AZAMQ2U/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1368302530&sr=1-2&keywords=littman

I recommend getting one that is NOT black, just get her favorite color, unless it happens to be black, then get her, like, blue. People beat stethoscopes, unfortunate, but true. The lightweight is boss and serves any and all of my Med-Surg needs.

It's a little more on the expensive side but the Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope is fantastic. It's very durable and sensitive to sounds that lesser stethoscopes would miss.

u/PATRIOTZER0 · 1 pointr/ems

Best stethoscope I've ever bought was a ADC Stethoscope on Amazon for like $19. I've had the expensive stethoscopes before, Littman, all that jazz, but this one does just as good as any of them. Plus it was only $19 so I have no issue bending it and sticking it in my pocket to go. If it gets damage I can just buy another. Here's a link if you want to look it over.

I would just keep an eye on it and do a little inspection one a year or so. Or right after a rainy period and see if you see any moisture behind the insulation. Also if you have an Android phone pick up one of these. For the price they work amazingly well. The stock app sucks though, I downloaded "otg view" and it works perfect.

Something simple, lets talk about a kids ear infection.

As a parent with kids that get ear infections, I already know what the problem is (Hell, I even have an Otoscope to confirm myself to save a trip to the doctor if I'm wrong).

I need a $5 antibiotic. But to get that I need a prescription - Which means I need to go to a clinic and see a doctor or someone who can give me that prescription.

Thats a $75 bill - IF I go to a clinic/doctor that my insurance covers. If I go to a doctor that my insurance doesn't cover it can easily be $400.

6x6 Med Pouch (Modified with fingernail polish)

  1. Personal prescription meds inside quart ziploc for additional water resistance.
  2. 2x 4inch Gauze rolls
  3. 8x 4x4 sterile gauze pads
  4. 2x tampons 2x menstrual pads (these are meant more for backups for wife rather than wound care)

  12. 2x Epi Pen (These are in case I have a run in with sunflower seeds.)

metal studs are, in fact, a thing. They're less common in residential construction (single family homes) and more common in condos, apartment complexes, and commercial spaces (where walls are less likely to be load bearing). As far as finding out what's really behind your walls, the best way is to take a look, you could drill a smallish hole in the wall, somewhere you'll be covering with a cabinet anyway, the either look directly in or use a [boroscope](https://www.amazon.com/USB-Borescope-Endoscope-Android-Inspection/dp/B074KXB3JM/) to look in behind the walls. You should be able to see either wood studs or metal studs within 8-12 inches to one side or the other of your hole. If you do have metal studs, you can use self-drilling screws to mount to them, though I'm not sure about how that would work with large items like cabinets, I'm by no means an expert on hanging cabinets or on hanging things to metal studs.

u/tehboogieman · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

Can't say it sounds much different, but possibly a lack of power between 2,000-3,000 rpm and then there's a power surge above 3,000. I only drove about 15 miles total today, with short trips making up the first half of those 15. The trip back home was a straight shot at highway speeds.

As for fire, whatever is up there, I'm guessing twigs, leaves or seeds/shells. It smells like burning wood or leaves rather than plastic, oil or rubber.

Maybe I can run a scope like this one.

My first goal is to diagnose it properly, I don't really want to go too far based on my assumption without confirmation. I'm not getting a CEL or any codes from a scan tool which is why I'm assuming any issue is after emissions sensors. Should I check for a blockage using a vacuum gauge?

Not OP, not an electrician but doing similar stuff at my house. I would recommend:

buy a borescope off amazon, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Depstech-Semi-rigid-Inspection-Waterproof-Adjustable/dp/B00STB0EW6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1520957443&sr=8-5&keywords=borescope+android

Watch out for switched neutrals

circuits seem to extend themselves with Knob & tube over the years. Flip the breaker off and then check every single light and test every outlet in the house to see what all is on that circuit.

I have cast iron junction boxes that are screwed to the studs, then plastered over. They were a PITA to get out without a huge mess, oscillating tool was very helpful.

You don't need a mechanic, you need a Priest. Ritual exorcism. Holy water and all that, lots of smelly incense.

OK. Golden rule in Computer troubleshooting - If the problem is repeatable, it's software. If it's random, bad hardware.

At this point I'm sorta thinking electronics.

  1. Bad Z switch (I got a spare in my parts kit with the printer) change it.

  2. Loose wire. Those JST connectors (small white ones used everywhere) are notorious for getting a connector pushed back into the plug housing when plugged in. Connects, but intermittently. Check the Z switch plug on both ends (open the control box) with an Eye loupe and pull each wire with tweezers, see if they move.

  3. Same on the Z motors.

That's all I got for now, still pondering, but the wires are a real possibility, I had one on a fan in my control box.

EDIT: I have one of these, very handy. Can actually discern layer adhesion. Used it twice to save a print by counting layers printed and editing the G Code to restart the print at that point.

Booze.

Jk. I would go with a good pair of sunglasses, a stethoscope, or pens. All the pens. People are really particular about scopes (especially around here), but I'd recommend a Littmann Lightweight. They come in girl colors too and work amazingly. Also not super expensive. Do NOT get her an expensive scope right away. This is a high quality scope at under $50. There's no point in getting a cardiology III for someone right out of school. Let her develop her skills and tastes first.

Overall it's worked but it's a PITA to get started. The App it uses is garbage and it's hit or miss if it will actually run on my phone (Pixel 2). Sometimes it freezes and I have to start the connection and everything over again. If the camera has sat for more than a week I have to recharge it before it will work. The camera will still turn on and it will connect to my phone, but it won't send any video.

Over all I'm pretty disappointed, I was hoping for something that was a little less hassle to use. It seems like I spend more time futzing with the thing to get it working than I do actually using it.

This is the one I use day to day. I had the Cardiology III throughout my EMT class and in my job (at the time, I got it for a steep discount because a friend of mine works a medical supply store). I prefer the ADC because it's inexpensive, is durable, and just works. Yup. Take the vent cover off, stick your camera (phone on selfie stick?) into the duct and snap a picture. The flash will light up as much of the duct run as it can and you'll see if there is a dead animal, old food, or something else in the duct.

You can also call an HVAC company or buy [one of these] small $15 cameras for your own phone. Check deeper than you may be able to see.
