CariFree CTx4 is the brand of toothpaste containing nano-hydroxyapatite that I use. NHA is arguably superior to NovaMin as used in European sensodyne, but I think there's enough research to show that both are superior to plain fluoride.

Carifree actually has a whole suite of products like mouthwash, xylitol gums, mouth-wetting sprays for dry-mouth, etc, that they've developed into an anti-cavity program that some dentists 'prescribe' their high-risk patients.

I went last year for the first time since about 2002. To put it lightly, I was scared.

It turns out that my fear of dentists for the previous 16 years was a solid and effective motivator for me to take very good care of my teeth. No cavities. I waited until AFTER the cleaning to tell them how long it had been, and they said it looked like I had been getting cleanings every 6 months. Now, whenever I go in every 6 months, they tell me I consistently have the cleanest teeth of any of their clients (maybe they are lying to make me feel good).

My regimen for the last 17 years:

• Floss, tongue scraper, mouthwash, then brush (in this order). Morning and night.
  
• Mouthwash after eating something messy or drinking something acidic or sugary.
  
• Do NOT Rinse after brushing or you'll wash away all the flouride and it won't have a chance to soak in.
  
• I use Sensodyne with Novamin. You have to order it from canada or the UK. If you can't get it, your dentist can prescribe you 3M Clin-pro which is almost as good.
  
• 3-4 times a week I use a waterpik and make sure I irrigate the gumline (front and back of teeth)
  
• I use an electric toothbrush like this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077Y79R9T/ref=dp_prsubs_2) I had a Sonicare, but felt that it did not work as well as the Oral-B. I also use the "Floss Action" brush heads that have little soft plastic paddles in them besides the actual bristles
  
  Also, I see a LOT of people brushing only the tops of their teeth. You need to brush the tops, AND the front and back. Spend extra time in the back by your wisdom teeth, as this is the place most people have problems.
  
  I know some people will say not to use a tongue scraper every day. I suppose if your using it like you're trying to scrape paint, that might not be a good idea. Orabrush makes a soft one with little bristles on it. It's a lot less harsh than the rigid plastic ones, I wouldn't use one of those every day. Here's the one I use:

  Yeah, I know, it has alcohol, and it doesn't have fluoride. I found that non-alcohol mouthwashes don't seem to work very well. And, I don't need fluoride from my mouthwash since I brush immediately after the mouthwash. Also, this particular listerine has some extra chemicals in them to help loosen food and stuff, which their fluoride version does NOT have.
  
  Edit: On the Novamin toothpaste... It was available in the US back in like 2007 or so. It got pulled from the market because of patent or licensing issues or something. Countries with bad teeth stereotypes can now buy this stuff over the counter and have overall better dental health than americans now. If you search around, you can find companies that will sell it to you and ship it to the US. The 3M Clin-pro stuff is the only "legal" choice here, but it requires a prescription, and the dentist will probably charge you $40 a tube for it. There is also this stuff:

  There are some NIH articles on tests of this stuff, and it appears to be as good or even better than Novamin. I have some. I asked my dentist about it, and he recommends it to people who think that fluoride is a mind control agent and won't use fluoride toothpaste. He has only started recommending it, so he didn't have feedback on how well it worked. Sometimes I switch it up and use this for a week or so.

Crest Whitening Strips

Apply it 1x or 2x a week to make it last longer instead of using it everyday, which could irritate your teeth and gums. The last time I used whitening strips was about 7 years ago. I drink coffee and soda almost everyday. As long as you maintain your dental hygiene, you'll keep the whiteness a lot longer.

Philips Sonicare toothbrush (or any other electric toothbrush)

Use at least twice a day. This will keep your teeth super clean, hence, whiter. I cannot go back to manual toothbrushes. It's amazing what a difference it does in cleaning your teeth. Do not skimp on your toothbrush if you want whiter teeth.

Sensodyne Toothpaste

Get sensitive toothpaste because whitening strips will make your teeth super sensitive. You don't have to get a whitening toothpaste. Those just use more abrasive ingredients, which doesn't necessarily make teeth noticeably whiter.

Water and Gum

Always try to rinse water after every sip of a drink and bite of food. If water isn't available, drink your beverages through a straw and/or chew a sugar-free gum. It doesn't need to be whitening gum - plus gum is just good to have around because many people don't realize they have unpleasant breath.

Floss

Every night. I did this for 6 months straight (I normally flossed infrequently — like once or twice a week) and had a perfect dental checkup after flossing everyday. The dental hygienist didn't even need to scrap off any plaque. This also helps make the sides/gaps between teeth whiter.

Listerine Mouthwash

Use weekly or as needed. I doesn't have to be whitening mouthwash. Do not use it everyday because it will create an imbalance of good bacteria and saliva which is essential for a healthy mouth.

Oh, and get a tan :)

I thought Colgate Total was different as it contained Triclosan. But i think other toothpastes have this too.

Big difference.. Sensodyne Repair and Protect has a bioglass compound called Novamin that actually bonds with the enamel and gives it an extra coating that fortifies teeth enamel. It is the only compound and toothpaste that actually repairs or fortified your enamel.

I know a new compound called Biomin has come out which is a superior version of Novamin, but it is only available in the UK for now.

Edit: correction: Bioglass is not the only compound that repairs your enamel. But it is the best or among the best there is. Also available over the counter so you don't need some expensive prescription toothpaste.

Novamin (a type of bioglass) was invented by a scientist and Sensodyne bought out his research, so to my knowledge Sensodyne Repair and Protect (non US version) is the only off the shelf toothpaste that has Novamin.

My Mom has cancer and is currently undergoing chemo again to try and push it back (she has a brain tumour).

We’ve found that Sea-Bands have helped with the sickness. This could all be psychosomatic but she hasn’t felt sick when wearing them and her appetite (which went terrible) has returned as she feels able to eat.

My Mom’s also found she’s developed a problem with mint when brushing her teeth so I brought her some unflavoured toothpaste from Amazon and she’s been fine with that. She says it’s a little powdery but bearable.

Grease can also be an issue, like the smell of grease in the house can make you heave if you’re already feeling ill. So just be wary if you’re a big fried chip fan.

However, no two people are the same and hopefully you’ll sail through your chemo. Just remember to eat what you want, when you want it. You don’t have to eat big meals if you don’t want them. Take everyday as it comes and remember to smile even when feeling down.

You’ll be amazed at what smiling to yourself in the mirror can do for your mood.

I bought Plus White 5 Minute whitening gel and was very happy with the results.

It didn't get my teeth like crazy blinding white, but it definitely brightened them up a bit and was cheap and easy to use. And also didn't ruin my enamel or anything like that. I was at the dentist last week and got nothing but compliments on my teeth.

Well it has Xylitol, no sugar (Stevia instead)(sorbitol technically is, but doesn't affect your teeth), no acid, and no other harsh chemicals.

It's already ahead of 90% of other toothpaste because of that.

However. It doesn't have TCP, which is the #1 thing toothpaste SHOULD include.

With that said, I only know of two toothpaste that do include TCP (tri-calcium phosphate, essential for repairing enamel)

• 3M ESPE ClinPro - < This is the non-prescription version much lower in flouride.

  Also, flouride is not the enemy for your teeth. Yes flouride should never be consumed in drinking water (DO NOT SWALLOW FLOURIDE IN ANY FORM EVER), but for your teeth it is good and makes the enamel structure stronger - however for toothpaste with flouride in it to benefit you, it really needs to have TCP in it.
  
  So while superblue is awesome, I can't recommend it over 3M Clinpro or Colgate Mineral Repair. You're better off with one of those.

If you just want a good toothpaste recommendation I use Euthymol, but apparently I'm a weirdo because I like the taste of Pepto-Bismol (which this tastes like). Makes my mouth feel super clean, but I'm an irregular smoker and very rarely drink coffee, so stain remover wise I couldn't say.

To use - Apply a very thin layer of the toothpaste on your toothbrush. Slightly wet with water. Brush your teeth. Using your tongue and mouth suction, push the toothpaste between each tooth for 3-5 minutes. Do not swallow the toothpaste. Spit it out as best as you can. Do not rinse out with water. Avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes.

I have white spots on my front teeth from braces as well, and finally got an answer from the last dentist I saw that they're demineralized spots, and if they don't develop further then they can remineralize but unless they do they'll be more likely to develop cavities.

I bought a remineralizing paste from my dentist with fluoride and hydroxy apatite in it, which helps remineralize the spots, and have been using it as a spot treatment. After some research into it I also bought a remineralization toothpaste off of Amazon, it's from Japan because it's not sold in the US but it's got the same effect as the paste. I've been using this for a few weeks now, and the white spots on my teeth have gotten a lot less noticeable.

You might still have issues with your teeth and this might not totally get rid of the spots, but I would highly recommend trying the toothpaste for a few months and seeing if that helps before looking at veneers. I feel like remineralization is not something that dentists in the US tend to look at other than fluoride, which isn't as effective as hydroxy apatite, but it's worth looking into.

I use the toothpaste Pronamel. Helps to strengthen enamel and keep it strong. Works wonders for me and my family. Yes, while enamel can't be rebuilt once it is lost, it can be strengthened, and as long as you still have some there is hope yet.

I also recommend-as my dentist did- to rinse your mouth with water once you have a surgary drink or a beer, or even anything to eat. It helps drastically cut down on the sugars and acids lingering on your teeth.
Don't forget to brush twice a day!

Don't sip all day, use a straw if you can, and try to either brush your teeth 30-45 minutes after drinking or swish out your mouth with water.

Also, whitening products in general can help with minor stains if you're diligent about it. Strips won't do jack for the in between but some toothpastes are excellent for slowly removing staining. For example, I use a toothpaste from Japan that's pricey but has definitely kept the worst of my staining at bay and has gotten some of the stubborn stuff between mine to fade. You could probably find cheaper stuff though. I know my aunt that's obsessed with keeping her's super white loves the stuff with Arm and Hammer but I couldn't bear to use it more than twice.

FWIW, I generally drink 2-3 cups a day along with lots of tea and my teeth stay pretty dang white between my cleanings every 8 months. Not like, movie-star white of course, but a normal white according to my dentist.

I'd check out a Whole Foods or similar healthy food store. They tend to have those types of items there, but I don't know for sure. I have a friend who said the switch made dramatic improvement for him. There are lots of new age/health stores in L.A., so I imagine it was easy for him to find it.

I also have a mirena IUD and have CC's, but I can't remember if I had them before or not - but pimples/acne on the chin is almost always hormonal. I started to use a toothpaste that is flouride-free and sls-free bc toothpaste with those products have been linked to CCs and have noticed a slight difference. I find that clay masks like the Aztec Clay Mask help in reducing/removing the CCs and hot compresses help as well.

I'd heard about going sls free, and poured over ingredients in the toothpaste aisle for an uncomfortably long time. I was surprised to see that brands like Tom's of Maine contain SLS now (not that my dentist, who see in Maine recommends it). I think they were bought out by a bigger company...

ANYWAY, back to the Sensodyn. Not all sensodyne brand products are sulfate free, but the one I linked to above definitely is. When I first tried it I actually found a travel size version at my local CVS, and I've seen them in the travel bins at the grocery store as well so it's common enough that you might be able to pick up a smaller tube and give it a shot for a few weeks!

It depends on budget and so on - I would just look out for ingredients. Fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite and xylitol are good. The next one we're trying is this CariFree brand.

But for a long time I've used Arm and Hammer's line of toothpastes. They tend to have low acidity/neutralize acids and aren't abrasive. I like the clean feel and gentle stain removing properties of the baking soda. It's not as sweet as other toothpastes though so the taste may be an adjustment.

I was looking at trying Gly Oxide for this purpose actually. It's got the same active ingredient (Carbamide Peroxide 10%) as the whitening kits but MUCH cheaper. Slightly less concentrated though. Brush it on or use a tray with the same instructions.

Fun Fact: The active ingredient is also used to loosen/remove ear wax!

Strangely most products are not even available in the US like sensodyne repair and protect.

The only toothpaste in the US that has one of those technologies is arm&hammer complete care enamel which has the same thing as enamelon.

Dr. Collin's toothpaste has novamin but no flouride so I am skeptical of it. Isn't fluoride pretty much the one thing we know works, and works well?

It will probably take a week or two of using it before you really notice a difference. I've noticed that I no longer find myself reflexively bracing when drinking really hot or cold liquids. It's definitely a quality of life improvement.

Please please please try this I also have pretty shitty teeth but using this toothpaste from Europe has actually given me two of my only "All clear" cleanings from the dentist. All my "trouble spots" have stopped in their fucking tracks. Novamin is owned by GlaxoSmith Kline (sp?) and they only sell it to perscription drug places here in the states so it's not commercially available. My dentist approves of it, it also has fluoride in it, she's pleased with the results.

Have you cut out all fluoride products? Your skin sounds a lot like mine. I have PD around the mouth too and getting rid of fluoride products was huge. A few weeks ago I used a travel toothpaste with fluoride in it and my face was itching like crazy.

Add a drop of glyoxide to your toothpaste every time you brush. The stuff is amazing and it's actually good for your teeth rather than damaging them. I was pretty amazed at the difference once I started using it.

I've used both Crest and Toms in the past. From what I've gathered from doing it a few times is that Crest is more effective (possibly due to the fluoride?) so I would go with that. For the toothbrush I imagine the softer the bristles the better as long as it still scrubs well.

It's like $6 a tube, but worth it.

where are you seeing £3? Cheapest I see on Amazon is $7.80 and on ebay (from a place I'd be more inclined to trust) is ~$11/tube. Just be careful you are actually buying Sensodyne with Novamin because the USA packaging (without Novamin) looks EXACTLY the same. Only if you can read the actual package clearly and can either see the tiny print saying "Novamin" or can read the ingredients list.

It was actually quite a journey finding the right one. There's a whole slew of non-SLS toothpaste out there but 99% seem to decide they should remove fluoride too.

I eventually found Trader Joe's had a fluoride anticavity toothpaste with no SLS. Another benefit is it doesn't contain any sweeteners, which was odd when I first tried it as almost all mass-market toothpaste is highly artifically sweetened. It's really pleasant to use and affordable too.

I went ahead and found it on Amazon in case you don't live near a Trader Joe's. It's cheaper in store though so worth a visit if you live near one.

I too suffer from canker sores and switching to SLS free toothpaste made a huge difference. You can get Sensodyne Pronamel, シュミテクト Proエナメル, in stores and it is SLS free. I personally use Sensodyne with Novamin. I've imported it via Amazon here, took about a month to arrive.

While I'm not necessarily anti-bacon (it is delicious of course!), I do think it is a bit overrated. I mean it's a great breakfast food and I can support putting it on burgers even, but nowadays people put bacon on everything. Bacon on pizza, bacon on hotdogs, bacon in salads, bacon on mashed potatos, bacon flavored ice cream, bacon in people's drinks, even bacon toothpaste. So I just think people should maybe chill on the bacon a bit.

If you can find an equivalent of this toothpaste then it is unflavoured. I'm not bothered by toothpaste or brushing (I ground my teeth as a kid so I have many dental problems now and a strict dental hygiene regime) but young people I worked with could tolerate this toothpaste when they couldn't others. Some also preferred using these toothbrushes because it would cut down on brushing time by simultaneously brushing all sides of the tooth. Obviously brushing for two minutes would still have had better results but this was a huge improvement for many of them as they found the process so difficult to tolerate.

You may want to change your toothpaste. While it has a RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) of 83-100 and is less gritty than most whitening toothpastes it is still above the recommended RDA of 70 or lower. Whitening toothpastes are mostly junk IMO.

This is the best toothpaste available over the counter, again IMO.

I've always asked myself the "enamel rebuilding" question. I would see sensodyne ads on TV for enamel rebuilding toothpaste, but I can never find it in the store. I always assumed it just fell under their "pronamel" line. Now this makes so much sense.

Do you have any literature on the effectiveness of Novamin? I am strongly considering switching toothpastes now.

Here in the Netherlands they are available in supermarkets. They have advertisments on TV promoting it (so it's not seen as a medical product at all, for which it's illegal to advertise here).

I don't know if they are particularly popular, but they are somewhat well known. I've heard two people say it helped and nobody that it didn't, but that's more anecdotal evidence (after all, it's a sample of 2 and there are people who think homeopathics work so you can't even trust those 2).

Amorphous calcium phosphate. I highly recommend Dr. Collins (non-affiliate Amazon link) which has reduced my tooth sensitivity to cold (I can eat ice cream again) and contains a form of amorphous calcium phosphate known as amorphous calcium phosphosilicate (scroll to 'Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate or Novamin').

I've been using the Apagard one that's imported from Japan that's available on Amazon Prime. It seemed better reviewed from the sort of American versions they have.

I would say it took about 6 uses before I got used to this toothpaste. Let me tell you - no one will regret this switch. Providing the right environment for your mouth allows you mouth to heal. And also there is of course water. I had at one point bought a Big Berkey water filter to filter out fluoride but it proved less practical than the fridge's water dispenser.

You can get Novamin toothpaste in bundles of 6 small tubes for about $30. That's $5 for a small tube. But if you use it sparingly-- small dabs on the toothbrush-- it can last. I think it's a reasonable price, even if it's high compared to "regular" toothpastes.

I'd stopped using sulfates skin or haircare, but I still had those chin whiteheads. Switched to sulfate-free toothpaste (Trader Joe's Anti-cavity Peppermint) and the whiteheads on my chin went away. I still have the occasional breakout, but those chin guys are long gone.

I also saw the post about Novamin the other day. I think you may have misinterpreted what you read there. My impression is that the FDA has no problem with Novamin being available OTC, it's just that the manufacturer has chosen to control the supply and refuse to sell it that way. That wouldn't make it illegal to buy or sell.

If it was actually illegal to buy or sell it in the US, you probably wouldn't be able to order it via Amazon. That's just one of many options on Amazon too.
