I would definitely avoid that hub. With 7 external ports the internal design will be two USB host controllers daisy chained together so 4 of those ports will at a minimum have to go through 3 host controllers to send data back to the PC. Very risky and prone to issues which will be explained below.
Apologies for the wall of text but it is all quite important to explain why USB hubs are not the best idea for a number of reasons. Only go the hub route if you have no other choice like you have a laptop and a PCI card if not an option. If you have a desktop and free PCI slots then grab one of the PCI cards listed at the end of this post.
USB 3.0 Hubs
The main concern with hubs is that there is an additional USB controller in the chain and if one of those controllers is not compatible then you might have tracking issues. The issue with compatibility is VR needs low latency and high bandwidth which is required for good tracking.
So you have something like this using a hub.
PC -> PCI Bus -> USB Controller -> Hub -> USB Controller -> Sensor.
I put together this image on the weekend to explain it to someone else - https://imgur.com/jI6Istl
If anything in that chain is sub standard you have issues. If you have good USB Controllers in that chain you wont see issues. Just remember a quality hub is only as good as the USB port on your PC you plug it into.
It is also recommended to get a powered USB hub if you have to go the hub route. People sometimes encounter not just a bandwidth/latency bottleneck but a power bottleneck. Importantly some PC USB ports can't push out enough power to power all the devices plugged into the hub. Get a powered hub to avoid this possibility.
Below are two brands Anker and Amazon Basics which are the hubs I commonly see people say have worked for the Rift. The 7 port one will have daisy chained USB controllers internally but people have recommended it so they must be good quality.

or

PCI Cards
Here are the cards that Oculus have recommended (I have personally tested the top two cards) .The blog posts at the end of this post might clear up why hubs are hit and miss for some people due to data/latency bottlenecks that might occur.
StarTek 2 port card (1 ASMedia controller) – Cheaper StarTek option that could be used for 2 sensors or a sensor and headset.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013HT6K3Q
Supported Inatek 4 port card (1 Fresco controller) – Don't get the 5 or 7 port card as the design is not really suited for Rift sensors as it has daisy chained controllers in the design.
https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Superspeed-Ports-PCI-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM
Use the Inatek for your two front facing cameras and nothing else. Plug your third or fourth USB 2.0 camera and Rift HMD into your motherboard.
Supported StarTek 4 port card (2 Controllers) – Optional middle tier PCI card solution which can run all four sensors or 3 sensors and HMD. Equivalent to two Inatek cards.
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00HJZE9VK
Supported StarTek 4 port card (4 Controllers) – Optional top of the range PCI card solution which can run all four sensors or 3 sensors and HMD. Equivalent to four Inatek cards.
https://www.amazon.com/Express-SuperSpeed-Adapter-Dedicated-Channels/dp/B00HJZEA2S
Both 4 port StarTek cards are pricey and a bit more than is actually required. You could achieve the same thing with 2x four port Inatek cards.

Oculus put together some blog posts last year explaining best practices. Parts 2 and 3 of Oculus tracking posts explain the USB subsystems and how to get the best config.

I wanna bump this as I would really like to get a dock for my buddy that has regular USB ports (at least 2) along with an HDMI so he doesn’t have to carry around multiple converters. Just need one that has USB & HDMI, don’t need anything else.
I found this one and it looks good. It’s a good price and is sleek, but I want to make 100% sure it’s compatible with my friends laptop before I buy it. If someone can please confirm it’d be much appreciated. Here’s the link to it, thanks in advance.
It just needs to be able to plug in to the laptop (which is apparently USB 3.1) and have regular USB ports (ones you can plug any normal device in to like a phone charger or wired mouse etc) and then a port he can plug an HDMI in to. He plans to get a 1920x1080 24” HP monitor to use the laptop with.
If this will work that’d be great. If not if someone can link me to a similar dock on Amazon that’s not more than $50-$60 and isn’t huge. Thanks guys.
USB C Hub Adapter, Trianium Aluminum Multi Port Charger Dock USB Type C to HDMI / USB C / 2 USB-A 3.0 Port [Pass-Through Charging] For Macbook Pro,Chromebook, Phone,Hard Flash Drive,Other USB C Laptop https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074DRW84M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ctt9Bb2T1QX6P
I bought a 2016 rMB Friday, and I am absolutely content. Single port really doesn't bother me, I never plug anything in, though I did buy this Satechi dock thing (http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Type-C-MacBook-12-Inch-Charging/dp/B019PHF9UY?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) just in case.
Frankly, I'd wait for the Pro refreshes that everyone else is advising you to do, but I LOVED my 11" Air and dreamed of it having a Retina display. The MacBook is the logical progression of this, and I am extremely happy with the outcome. It is fast, small, and beautiful to use.
After hours of searching, I think I've finally found 1 or 2:
I hope it benefits anyone reading, and please correct if found any mistake.
Experienced users of any of these devices, but not limited to, please donate your opinions.
TP-Link UH720
The side 2 x 2.4Amp only does charging. No Data Sync.
I've checked with TP-Link Pre-sales support, the front 7 ports of this model does 1.5A charging AND data sync.
However, I did not ask about how many devices could it sustain at 1.5A.
But i bet at least 2 shouldn't be a problem and it's good enough for me.
TP-Link UH700
This Model, however, only the last 3 ports does charging and data sync up to 1.5A.
Pluggable USB 3.0 10-port hub
This I only the back 2 port does charging.
Plugable 7-Port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Charging Hub
This one it says any of the port does 1.5Amp charging, definitely you can't charge all 7 ports at 1.5Amps, but it has a switching power inside.
The key here is to look for BC1.2 Compliant (Battery Charging 1.2).
Hopefully the BC1.2 standard could upgrade to support more than 1.5Amps soon.
Hootoo has a lineup of USB-C hubs that have an assortment of ports. You can get a simple one or a more advanced one with power passthrough, several USB3 ports, an SD reader and an HDMI out. They're not tiny, but hey - if you're doing to be doing HDMI, you probably need a HDMI cable too so you need a bag either way.
They're not cheap (Apple devices seem to be their target market), but it's quality stuff in aluminium, and the HDMI out works perfectly with my G5. Perfect in hotels or some such - most hotel TV's will have a HDMI in plug, just have some videos on the G5 and put them on the big screen. Good times.
Plus, with three USB ports, you can plug in a keyboard and a mouse if you want and presto, you have a full HD capable little Android desktop.
http://www.hootoo.com/ht-uc001-usb-type-c-hub-charging-hdmi-apple-pd.html - apparently nowadays they even come in silver, gold, rose gold or "space gray", should match the G5 colors pretty well. I got the silver one though.
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Shuttle-Delivery-Charging-Output/dp/B01K7C52E4/
Unfortunately, the SD reader doesn't work in the G5, and I haven't had success with plugging in a normal USB memory stick either. Which is not shocking since you need to be rooted and be running Stickmount, I believe, for that to work. But video out and HID devices working is already kind of cool in my book.
Might be possible to hook up a printer to it via USB too, gotta have to give that a whirl.
And maybe an Xbox game controller, haven't tried that yet but I see no reason why that wouldn't work also.
Research it before you buy one.
I recently bought a hub for my ps4 and every time I plug it in, the ps4 starts acting up and losing connection to the web and stuff that feels like it shouldn't be unrelated to the usb port...
USB 3.0 Hub, atolla 4 Ports Super Speed USB 3 Hub Splitter With On Off Switch With 1 USB Charging Port (Cable Length 2 Feet, No AC adapter) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W9FLKTY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DKKtzb8WJHY2G
That's the model I have and it's not great... at the moment It's plugged straight to the wall and I use it to charge controllers/phones
The reviews/questions on amazon made it look like it works perfectly with the ps4... just like the commenters before me. It doesn't and I'm still not sure what to look for in a model that would work fine.
Good luck
People said the same thing about USB A when it first came out back in the day. They removed the parallel port, the serial port, the Apple Talk port, etc in favor of USB. And look where it's taken us! I'm not saying that Apple is a pioneer or that they have a great track record, but we now have in front of us a non-Apple proprietary port (Thunderbolt is licensed through Apple/Intel as a joint effort, not that it'd even matter since USB C is open) that is superior in almost every way. And really it is not that expensive to get something where your old devices work. For $40 you can get a USB C hub that has USB A + another USB C port. That's not expensive compared to the olden days where you had to have an adapter for USB->Serial or USB->Parallel where compatibility was minimal at best. USB C is completely compatible with every version of USB, it's just a different connector.
At this point it's really just meme material and most arguments against the idea of having this unifying new connector are hollow at best.
I got the Samsung Chromebook Pro over a year ago and it has a type c port on both sides of the device. I use a dock similar to This and have it stuck with Velcro to my desk. I plug in and unplug my Chromebook about twice a day. It says charging slowly when plugged into the dock with power but I've never lost power, only gained power or stayed full charged when using it. It has been an amazing set up for me thus far.
EDIT: just read some of your other comments. You mention your mother is older. This one connector solution is really easy to manage once you have the dock set up with her peripherals, not to mention you can't plug it in wrong because the connector is reversible. Also maybe get her a Chromebook that is a touch screen and perhaps turn into a tablet, I work at a school district with older staff and they love the touch screens.

Title: [USA-FL][H] 2017 13” MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar [W] PayPal/Local Cash
Username: /u/OmicronMC
Body:
I am interested in selling for my 2017 MacBook Pro. The specs are: 3.1 GHz Intel i5, 8 GB 2133 LPDDR3 RAM, 256 SS, Intel Iris Plus 650.
The computer is in perfect working condition, the screen and touch bar are both totally fine, the keyboard works great, as does the track-pad. The only flaw are the scratches on the back edges (entirely aesthetic), and this can be found in the last image of provided link.
This also has AppleCare+ till June of 2021.
I'm looking for around $1150. I am also providing a dongle, and this does not affect the price - I simply do not need it. I currently do not have it with me, but here is the amazon link for it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XRVX3XM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am local to 32607(College Address) or 34761(Address that I go to during weekends).

> Are the cable management tubes any good?
Yeah, definitely! But I recommend something like this over one of these spiral ones. They don't cost much more and are easier to handle. Plus, they would allow the cables to move easily so you won't have that snagging problem(cable ties) with the charger and headphones.

Perfect! Thank you! :D
I don't know why I couldn't find anything before, I didn't really know what to write... This has it as: Hub with Power delivery. I didn't think of that.
Thanks again :)
Our favorite, and 2nd favorite. Both work in the Vive headset nicely:

For Trackers, we're using Gopro mounts with 1/4in adapters, and just 1/4 bolts drilled into money clips. This one is versitile: feet, wrists, or back of hand is quick:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NNGCBNC/
I use the adapter, it's pricey but does the job well. No complaints from me. I explored other options like the Satechi adapter, which I also own.
It's generally been a disappointing product. I feel it would have been trivial for them to include USB C for charging pass-through, and it has random disconnects. Satechi has promised me a replacement but that only solves the disconnect issue and not the missing charging port.Edit: the Satechi hub doesn't have HDMI, I forgot about that.
Edit 2:
Good news. Satechi has updated their adapter to include USB C now. I'll have to purchase the updated one to see if it works out better for me. It was an ideal form factor but the missing USB C was a problem.

I use this one.
Also I bought this cute usb mini 2-port USB hub... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FJG5T4W?ref=yo_pop_ma_def
That makes it capable of 4 controllers when gaming (if you wanna game). damn, looks like this guy is out of stock on amazon. I would look for it elsewhere. I think it was like 12 bucks
I bought these controllers for it that also works well
2 Pack Classic N64... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SDX7BQ?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
They feel like old n64 controllers. I have not had a problem with them yet
Perfect, thank you! I think I'm going to go with this guy: https://www.amazon.com/Black-4-Port-High-Speed-USB/dp/B002FFT8Z6/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1494349496&sr=1-12&keywords=usb+4+port+hub
I just wasnt sure if plugging this into only one of the ports on the Raspberry pi would allow me to still use 4 controllers.
Thanks!
I had a few common parts already so I only spent around $10. If you need to buy everything, probably about $30. Parts list--
$10 - PI Zero W I didn't need to buy one for this project since I have a few spares.
$10 - 2 x USB hub. I also didn't by this for the project. You could definitely go cheaper on this, but I had this one laying around.
$4 - USB sound card
$6 - MCP3008
The DVD players are all over ebay for between $40 and $50. That includes charger, battery, and sometimes a case and carseat mount. I imagine you could do this to almost any portable DVD player if there's enough free space inside the case.
edit: this cost doesn't include the money I spent on a spare DVD player since I trashed my original one doing this.
I know I shouldn't, but the urge is just keep pumping. Clean those snakes! lmfao https://www.amazon.com/Dotz-Spiral-Management-diameter-SCT500B-C/dp/B0085U9DNM

Also beware of Steam sales. <.<
I’ve been using this hub for years with all kinds of MIDI gear with zero issues.
Some USB 3 hubs don’t work with MIDI gear. I was given this Anker one and my Push 2 doesn’t work with it, but works perfectly with my cheap, AmazonBasics USB 2 hub.
OP’s hub, and mine as well, come with this warning buried in the product description: “MIDI devices and some USB 3.0 devices may not be supported”
You're best bet may be to do something like this.

Would something like this that I can mount on my wall work? Then run everything behind my desk and plug into that? New and want to see what others are using, thanks!
I just wanted to give you some helpful WMR tracking advice. Microsoft has made a lot of improvements through software since launch. Make sure you are on the latest 1903 build of windows. There was a WMR bug, but it was patched.
I believe Samsung did not put the bluetooth receiver for the controllers into the headset until the odyssey+. If that is the case, it is a good idea to use a usb extension cable to get the bluetooth dongle closer to the controllers. I'm also not sure if the headset comes with a bluetooth dongle, so double check that.
Also, you want to use your headset in a well lit room. Finally, some people have problems with their motherboards not being able to supply enough power from their usb port. I use this powered USB 3.0 hub:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VK9C24M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
You might not have any issues without it, but if you get audio crackling or issues with the screens, it might solve the problem. Enjoy.
Not sure what you mean by native performance, but any usb3 hub should allow you the same speeds as plugging in directly to your computer. As far as power goes, what about a powered hub like this?
Tendak USB 3.0 Hub with 4 USB 3.0 Data Ports + 1 USB Smart Charging Port and Power Supply Adapter with Individual On/Off Port Switches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VK9C24M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bwXZzbRBAYKNT
I've been using split loom for desktop cable management for just over a year now, and I can't recommend it enough. My trackball doesn't move much relative to my keyboard (and even when I used a mouse I just added a little extra slack).
By enclosing the wires in split loom (the stuff used in car wiring harnesses), they're kept protected and look pretty good, in my opinion. I have a fairly deep desk, and didn't want to have two cables running across it because I keep notebooks and such above the keyboard. I had split loom on hand for a 3D printer build, and decided to give it a shot.
In addition, you can see a little button above the keyboard. I've got an IOGear USB sharing hub that allows me to switch my trackball and keyboard between up to 4 different computers. It's fantastic for when I do work on my business laptop at home, I just plug in one cable and can use my own peripherals with the press of a button. Highly recommended!
My keyboard is a Pok3r with DSA keycaps arranged to match my Dvorak layout. I learned Dvorak on a standard QWERTY keyboard, as recommended, but wanted a board that matched my actual layout for when I just need to hit a key or two without putting my hands on the home row. The green keys are Vim movement keybindings, I've got the Debian logo on one of the function keys, and the OpenBSD logo for ESC. Those two keys aren't DSA, but aren't different enough to disrupt normal usage.
Where'd you get the 3 port one from? 3 would be perfect, I do not need 4. Also, did you need the power adapter? Thanks!
EDIT: Is it this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013XGK53E/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_18_w
I’m using one of these to hang two SSD’s off a single USB port on a One X - works like a charm;
USB 3.0 Hub, Tendak USB Hub with 4 USB 3.0 Data Ports + 1 USB Smart Charging Port and Power Supply Adapter with Individual On/Off Port Switches for PS4 Pro PS4 Slim Xbox One; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VK9C24M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_op0TDbX7SXPZB
You can buy a single USB-C hub and connect everything through it:
https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Shuttle-Delivery-Charging-Output/dp/B01K7C52E4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478371293&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=usb-c+hub&psc=1
Granted, it is pricey for a hub that does everything, including power, SD card, USB, etc. which I get that most people feel like they shouldn't have to pay for. But I only connect to my DJ equipment which needs 3 USB ports. I would need a hub of some sort anyway on most laptops, which only have 2 USB ports anyway, so I don't see it as a big deal. For hubs that only have USB-C to USB-A connection, you can find a decent one for like $25. I imagine the prices will drop further as USB-C becomes more of a standard.
Honestly it is a bit annoying to have to have a little connector to connect a USB drive to my MacBook. But generally I have everything in the cloud and very rarely connect anything to the computer - there's dropbox, airdrop, google drive, a whole host of ways to transfer data.
I can understand that professionals will want to stay away if they use certain ports frequently. And it would have been nice to have a couple extra ports instead of nothing but USB-C. But honestly I just don't really care and I think the inconvenience is being blown out of proportion.
I did a bunch of research and tried to buy a Dell XPS 13. But I was on the phone with their tech support, which were people who barely spoke English, and it was a trial to even try to order a computer from them. I can't imagine what it would be like if I had to explain a computer problem to a Dell tech guy. The order process was so convoluted and left such a poor impression on me that I decided to go buy a new MacBook instead. Walked in the store on my way home from work, 15 minutes later I was set up and running, migrating everything from my old MacBook Air. Build quality is great, and I really needed to upgrade from my 2011 MacBook Air.
The iPhone 7 not having a headphone jack was a fiasco. But I think the USB-C ports will become the standard and this move makes more sense to me.
I put Windows in a virtual machine (QEMU/KVM) with its own GPU / SSD / Display / USB controller, only using the VM for Windows games. I use this device to switch the keyboard / mouse, although you can use a program like Synergy if you don't want to buy anything.
You can use the Intel GPU on Linux and the Nvidia/AMD GPU on the VM, or if you have a GPU laying around, you can use that for the Linux host, I'm using a dedicated GPU on the Linux host to play games on there also.
You can read about this here:

I got a "squid" shaped USB hub like this (http://www.amazon.com/Black-4-Port-High-Speed-USB/dp/B002FFT8Z6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1348761124&sr=8-4&keywords=USB+HUB) and it works pretty well since you don't have to look under the "lip" of the ps3 to find the ports.
Well, you can get a usb 3.1 gen 2 front panel connection to your case, something a lot of modern cases still don't have. That expandability is why some people like me (enthoo pro/luxe) still find it quite useful to have up to now.
Throwing in mine too... I have 2 RAVPower 6 port hubs I like them a whole lot, plenty of power to go around, and not my first Ravpower device, I view them as around the same quality as Anker, just have a bit of brand loyalty with the Rav stuff...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OQ1CY2Q
And a AmazonBasics 10 port hub, unfortunately if the phones are actually discharged it powercycles after 5 phones, so it only provides like 50W, which stinks... but if they're charged, it can keep them charged, even while power cycling
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GGYU46O
Just picked up this one too, gonna try it out see if I like it, feels solidly built... but haven't used it yet, needed a few outlets for other stuff, but I think I might have been better off getting a regular power strip and another hub, cause either it's on the desk for the phones, or on the floor for the other stuff...

This is easily the best USB C adapter you can get for the MacBook Pro: https://www.amazon.com/QacQoc-Aluminum-Multi-Port-Charging-Ethernet/dp/B01MU1FFMP/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498186163&sr=8-1&keywords=qacqoc
> Power adapter
THanks ok. I am kind of confusing myself. So if I got that cable (linked below), how would I give it power? Do you think you can send me picture of it (whether its ur setup or one from online so i can visualize it?)
So would I need to purchase this stuff?:
Micro USB 2.0 OTG Cable
https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Adapter-Samusung-Android-Function/dp/B00LN3LQKQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1485041218&sr=8-3&keywords=Micro+USB+OTG

Some sprial tube might work You can probably find a better deal, but you get the ideal.
I have been using this usb splitter on my model 3: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013XGK53E/, its been working very well for me. Also make sure you use a fast usb drive ( I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7SX9NS/ and have had no issues). Don't think you need the data blocker that other people have noted, but it definitely does not hurt.
Yep, KVM without the video. I just switch inputs on the monitors.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y3CTDAY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The only issue is/was with the Corsair Keyboard and the Mac. iCue just released for OSX so it's still kind of buggy. Sometimes the lighting wouldn't work when I switched back to the Mac. Since I got the new dock it seems to be working perfect now.
It has a little button that you press to switch between machines (can go up to 4 pcs). I have it mounted under my desk.
Having tried Debian previously on my UX390UA, I am currently running Ubuntu 16.04, and provided you use a recent kernel, everything works fine. Currently waiting on a 1TB NVMe SSD upgrade, which I intend to use for dual booting Ubuntu & Gentoo.
Word to the wise, though; mine did not come with a USB-C to USB-A adaptor; a number of sources hinted that it would, but wherever you get yours, you might want to check the box contents list.
I can say that Anker's Unibody USB-C to USB-A+Gigabit Ethernet + power pass-through adapter works perfectly, though. Not wanting anything to do with Windows 10 myself, the laptop was basically useless without this.
I got on of these handy things from Amazon a while back for my Surface Pro 2 before I got the Surface Book. Still use it on occasion at work or lend it out. Works great!
This is cool info.
I got really lucky when I put together my setup last year, in that I inadvertently did a lot of stuff by accident that was good noise-avoiding practice.
All my equipment is connected to one outlet in two sockets, split between 2 APC UPS's. All midi over USB goes through a Amazon which is then powered by an iconnect Midi interface (where all traditional midi connections also go).
I'm bus powering my keyboard controller and the hub, passing midi through USB to the sub37, ms20m KARP and my pedalboard (connected with a USB to Midi Cable). And it all works without a hitch.
That was a mistake on my part there lol. Meant to link the USB 2.0 link. Actually the refurb one is just as good and it was only 17 and some change when I bought mine like 3 days ago. Here
This cable is approved!
I plan on getting it as well to have a spare cable at work and when I'm out and about.
Can anyone tell me if my 6P would charge rapidly when connected to one of the charging ports (or perhaps even the regular USB 3.0 ports) of this TP-Link USB 3.0 hub? This hub is of course connected to the USB 3.0 port of my laptop.
Or should I just get the 2.0 USB A to C cable?
Would be best to get normal monitors and choose between the two options below.

Note: don't buy some other usb c hubs, with only one type c connection claiming to support two displays. Most of them use display port Daisy chaining which is not supported in mac os
It's an Anker USB 3.0 14-Port Hub. Love it! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GSLMTQ8
Fair enough. You might run into ergonomic issues trying to use a raised keyboard without a wrist rest.
I bought this one, which was pricey but worth it. The biggest benefits are that it's USB 3, so I can plug USB sticks into it and transfer at full speed to any of the attached computers, and it has a separate switch button which I keep next to my keyboard.
If you only need to switch between two computers and/or don't care about USB 3 (like for a keyboard and mouse), you could go for a cheaper option.
For people who don't have a USB C port or the required headers on the motherboard, I would go with a PCIe card that provides headers for the front panel. Then get something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/EZDIY-FAB-2-Port-USB3-0-USB3-1-Connector/dp/B078Z52Y1X/
That would be a much better setup than trying to plug it into the back of your computer or using a wobbly USB C to USB adapter.
Thanks for your response! Yeah I read that those Y splitters only add power. So yup, going to pick up one of these potentially
http://www.amazon.com/Cute-USB-2-Port-Splitter-Black/dp/B00FJG5T4W/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
dremel her open and desolder all the connectors.
Something like this Tendak USB 3.0 Hub with 4 USB 3.0 Data Ports + 1 USB Smart Charging Port and Power Supply Adapter with Individual On/Off Port Switches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VK9C24M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cp1VAb9ZTXN2R
If third parties can Mac USB type c adapters like this, Apple can make one with two lighting ports.
Question: Do splitters like these work well? Anyone with experience?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W9FLKTY?psc=1
I really like this type, but you can find cheaper like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Type-C-MacBook-12-Inch-Charging/dp/B019PHF9UY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1486992989&sr=8-6&keywords=usb+c+adapter
Go with the Filco Minila Air or any wireless keyboard. I have the Surface Pro since the day it was released and I can tell you for sure that wires will be annoying while using the Surface Pro.
You only have 1 USB port with the Surface line, and a keyboard will easily take that port up. The most efficient way to use a wired keyboard with the Surface in my opinion would be to have a 6 inch to 1 foot USB cable along with a small USB hub.
This is the exact one I bought, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU1FFMP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_R10eAbWAZJ5EN they have a few different colors and options like ones that connect directly to the side of the Mac without the extended cable but those use 2 ports, and another like the one I bought but slightly reorganized in terms of where ports are located.
USB C hubs exist. In fact macbooks can use USB C powered hubs. IN fact PIXEL C's can use it. I use one with my pixel C everyday. I charge my tablet AND use the extra port to connect my extenral mouse, it's AWESOME.
IT's google who are being assholes about adding firmware support for this on their phones.
powered/passthrough USB C hub: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Delivery-Charging-Chromebook/dp/B01D0XTF9U/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Portable-Worlds-Smallest-HB-MNBW/dp/B00UMVFJW6
On sale for $5 right now. You may experience some interference if the keyboard and mouse are plugged in together next to each other, but that goes with all USB ports and wireless transmitters. If you can plug the keyboard into PC and mouse into hub or vice versa, that would help.
Get a good powered USB hub. I have this one. The benefit of lighted on/off buttons for each individual port is nice. I have 3 4TB USB-powered drives (meaning they are powered by the hub and do not have their own source) plugged in all the time, and they never bog down. Most of the time I remember to turn them off when not in use. They perform flawlessly. You don't have to get a hub with individual on/off buttons as unplugging them does the same thing, but you do need to make sure the hub is powered. ALWAYS back up the media to a different drive, however. Eventually, everything fails. A long time ago, I decided to start buying 2 drives when I only needed one. The second drive always serves as a backup for the first one.
They are all 2.5" USB 3.0 with no external power supplies
I could not find the one I have, but this seems to be the updated version with 14 ports and dedicated charging.
https://www.amazon.com/Anker-14-Port-Aluminum-Transfer-Charging/dp/B00GSLMTQ8
Yeah, thats not going to work well.
I use this successfully: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UMVFJW6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This thing would seem to be able to do what you want, but I can't vouch for it. Anker has made a couple different versions of this, some of which are no longer available after less than 2 years, and they seem to be the only company advertising this capability, so I'm skeptical, but at least it'd be an easy return to Amazon if it doesn't work.
On the USB C only Macbook Pro, here's a nice adapter that gives USB A ports, 1 SD card slot and 1 Micro SD Card Slot, here's a more expensive one.
And yes, the iMac Pro has an SD Card slot, you can check MKBHD's video
it is actually pretty cheap considering the hdmi/usb/power hub on the market right now
https://www.amazon.ca/Anker-Delivery-Recharging-Aluminum-ChromeBook/dp/B01D0WE99C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484347339&sr=8-3&keywords=anker+delivery
Turns out I found one further down the results list of a different Amazon search. It didn't come up under "slim USB hub" or anything like that. I ordered this one, gonna give it a try
https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Charging-Compatible-Windows-External/dp/B00SCX6I8A/
I have this one and it's really nice. And it has its own power brick, and 2 extra charging ports.
The SP4 Type Cover has made it feel like a whole new device to me.
Caution: not all USB hubs are capable of charging. this is the one I purchased and seems to be working so far: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W9FLKTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You could use something like Corz Checksum to calculate checksums on each file and compare the onsite and offsite versions to see if they are different. If they are, one copy is bad but you'll need some other way to figure out which one.
Once you've collected all your good checksums, you can do the same check anytime in the future to determine if either copy is bad.
To save time and effort and money, you could buy a few USB docks or powered adapters (around $20 each) and a good USB 3.0 hub and run multiple instances of your checksum utility, one for each drive.
Have you tried any of those USB C dongles that have USB Ports + HDMI + alloy you to charge? That is my other concern I would not mind the single port when browsing or traveling. But occasionally I hook my current Macbook up to an HDMI monitor + USB hub + charger.
Something like this I guess: https://www.amazon.com/HooToo-Shuttle-Delivery-Charging-Output/dp/B01K7C52E4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478312963&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=USB+c+HDMI+%2B+usb&psc=1
I got this one: USB 3.0 Hub, atolla 4 Ports Super Speed USB 3 Hub Splitter with On Off Switch with 1 USB Charging Port (Cable Length 2 Feet, No AC Adapter) (4-Port hub) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W9FLKTY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7IOEDbH82BFG7
However, I do find the USB cable a bit long. I need to cable manage in that area now. Not a huge issue, but 2ft in that area is a bit much.
But, for reference, my front console area also contains the bottom bucket half of this :https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2993184 and this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3187713 on top of the bucket. So, my front console area is a bit busy.
I had intended to use the bucket as a sort of "in car garbage can", but after some thought I think I'm going to store a couple of wired Xbox controllers in there.
If you're not interested in the 300$ OWC dock but want a dock with 1 hdmi, wired gigabit, 3 usb 3.0 this little guy is working well for me.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU1FFMP
I got this thing: https://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Type-C-MacBook-12-Inch-Charging/dp/B019PHF9UY/ref=pd_sim_147_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VSTEN37TF1YVRP7GVD1B
Looks nice, and will get me through the transition.
Don't forget that something like this is also an option.
Good point, I didn't think about that. It's technically possible to do LAN+charging when undocked but it's complicated and expensive.
Some USB-C hubs (like this $40 Anker one) support passthrough charging, but they'll only work with some chargers (needs USB PD) and there's no telling which ones actually work with Switch because most of them are finicky. I haven't even tested the one I linked. Some of them have built-in Ethernet that may or may not work, others need a USB LAN adapter.
I ordered the anker usb-c hub with ethernet. Hopefully it works with the device.
I've been looking at motherboards and cases and I'm really confused on matching up USB ports.
So obviously, rear panel usb ports will be found on the back of your case, and those depend entirely on your motherboard.
But what about front USB ports, the ones that case makers already include? Correct me if I'm wrong, but, that all depends on the internal io connectors/headers of the motherboard, where a single header should support 2 ports of it's type?
And where does adding USB ports belong in this? Whether through a pci slot in the back or a 5.25" bay in the front?
This hub is the best USB hub I've ever used, but they also have a cheaper, smaller version.
StarTech.com 5in Micro USB to USB OTG Host Adapter - Micro USB Male to USB A Female On-The-GO Host Cable Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B4GGW5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_YVhRub0XJS7T6
and something like this that I got locally:
Black 4-Port High Speed USB 2.0 Hub https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002FFT8Z6/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_OZhRub0CERANR
Yeah reading your link confused me too. I think you need a usb-c dongle with power passthrough like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D0WE99C
Aye, a single dongle/hub would do. :)
500GB and 1000GB SSDs are common in these machines, but you gotta put your hard-earned down! But the Macbook Pro's have transitioned from the notebook class to the ultrabook class, and they'll get rid of things most people don't need or use on the machine itself.
I only used this one because I ran out of the Nano Hubs and I'm waiting for more to arrive. As for a source for this hub, I can't guarantee you would get the same board as they likely vary internally from their exterior appearance and I can't recall where I got this one. But it looks like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002FFT8Z6
I'm working on designing my own custom hub for the PSC though.
This problem makes me wish that Shenzhen IO could make real products. The device is technically simple but demand for it is nearly non-existent. I did find a few things I might try, as they're not too expensive, mostly as a proof of concept (because you end up with a lot of plastic on your desk.)
This device is a simple bidirectional video switch. You'd need like 3 of these to handle switching Rift and 2 monitors between two machines. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXFHPBH
This USB switch might be able to do the job as well.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y3CTDAY
The Rift is quite picky about USB quality, so it's hard to say if it would introduce too much latency or signal loss, plus with this setup you'd need to hit 4 buttons to switch, but that's not so bad if it worked. The total cost is about $90
Yeah I bought this one here:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00UMVFJW6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This really is an edge case of this stuff. Bluetooth solved the issue that this guy is having. A decent USB hub is all that this guy needs.
Here this is one that is 5 dollars shipped:
http://www.amazon.com/Black-4-Port-High-Speed-USB/dp/B002FFT8Z6/
I bought and use this at my work desk.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y3CTDAY
It works well and allows up to four connections.
As an IT guy who currently has these problems we solved it by just purchasing these, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XRVX3XM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Otherwise like stated purchase previous generation MacBook Pros.
It's important to use a powered hub so that the USB port doesn't shut off when trying to pull the necessary voltage.
This moves the access point right to your room and sends the data over the USB to your PC in the other room.
I've got two of these, working fine so far: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B013XGK53E
Are you talking about this hub? One of the first pi gameboy tutorials used one of those, and I have a couple of them. From the tutorial they seem to work fine, but if I wanted 5 connections I'd have to use 4 of them (since I could only use one of the ports then have to daisy chain another hub off the 2nd). I may end up having to do that but I don't really want to (more space + expensive).
OK here's why I think this is a terrific product idea: it's not a substitute for a USB hub, it's a substitute for the wires that you would plug into USB ports. So no hubs are needed.
If you are worried about power, you could get a powered usb hub, like this on: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-Portable-Adapter-Devices/dp/B00PBZX0OM/
I use This Sabrent one for my SSD, Astro A50 Base station, Kinect, and wireless keyboard remote, and haven't once ran into a single issue.
I use this hub with a Jeda charger.

How about this?
You'll need a powered hub, one that uses external power to turn on, it'll have it's own plug.

My M7 one will be arriving next week, so I can't say how it performs just yet. But I've been eyeing up this hub by Anker. They also sell one with a HDMI or 3 USB ports, although it replaces one of the USB ports. Looking at it as it can also charge the laptop.
2tb western Digital ssd, 400gb micro sd. then I use a mini hub from Sabrent (https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Premium-Aluminum-Rotatable-HB-R3MC/dp/B013XGK53E) and with that I use 3 mini micro sd card readers where I again use my other 3 micro sd cards of 400gb. I also have a usb enclosure for my 512gb ssd that I velcro attach to my screen and either plug it directly into the USB port or into the mini hub. so all in all I have about 4tb of storage
100%. Here's one from Anker (good reputation) which also allows to charge while using it.

double the price

Would a USB Hub work(like this) or are you mainly looking for something internal?
Four months late (browsing for inspo), but:
It's a USB-C hub. You can find a ton of 'em on Amazon. Different YouTube tech reviewers have done "best-of"s of them. It's not the one that OP has, but I'm partial to the Satechi model; they make good shit. Pricey, but that's because it actually has to fully power all those ports, which cheaper ones don't always do (or do well).
Search for compact USB hubs. Here are some:

It does not have multiple USB Type-C ports, but does have one and it passes power. Use USB 3.1 Type-A for your external drive when it's on the hub, and keep the USB-C to USB-C adapter for when you are traveling without the hub.

Unless you have front bay-less case, maybe grab one of this for front USB-C slot.
Bought the wireless charging Mat that replaces the USB one provided with the car. I’m so happy with that $49 Amazon purchase. TapTes brand. Also purchased thr Boulder Pack Co. The hub is used to have more ports in the console to use for Flash Drives or SSD drives to record Sentry and DashCam and also play music from.
To give you an idea of how I set my car up I plug the charging mat directly into the pass-through battery. I plug the battery into one of the two USB ports in front of the console. The output from the battery is higher amperage and charges my phone much faster. The battery pack charges itself when I’m driving.
That frees up one of the USB ports where I plug in the USB splitter and in that splitter I plug-in multiple devices such as a flash drive to record My dashcam and mySentry
Edit: fixed a typo and also added an additional comments.
A Thunderbolt dock is your best bet, though if you're balking at $80 for the Ankers then I guess one's not on the cards.
I use in some cases more than one of the
Satechi,
Anker,
Anker,
Yet Another Anker,
Aukey
^^^And ^^^no, ^^^those ^^^aren't ^^^native ^^^C ^^^ports ^^^- ^^^you'd ^^^have ^^^to ^^^be ^^^an ^^^idiot ^^^to ^^^expect ^^^that ^^^for ^^^<$50
and they all suck to different degrees - the Ankers possibly being the worst though it's a fine line. The main problem is consistency in operation - e.g. even with a much higher-rated PSU feeding it, Power Delivery behaviour of peripherals connected to the ports can be unreliable. And that's on top of other USB stuff I plug in which either aren't recognised or drop off from time to time. This whole thing has made using a Macbook IRL a fucking nightmare and right now I'm really wishing I hadn't dumped all of my '15 MBP's when I switched over wholesale to the '16 MB/Ps.
Still waiting for OWC Thunderbolt dock to be released + reviewed then I'll order them for all my semi-stationary setups. Again though, it's a $300 proposition. The $200 Caldigit TS3 Lite is now shipping but I don't like it's limited scope of ports.
does this one have enough space to be plugged in on the lower port and still have space for the charging cable to be plugged into top one?

"Significantly cheaper"
see here marked down from $135 and marked down from the low low price of $169.99!
key word is cheaper, the dock cant be the cheapest as is it specifically formed to fit the system, and likely carries some sort of licensed samsung chip if the knock off dex adapters are working as docks.
>I'm gonna need a source on that.
I dont have a source because I dont remember which discussion thread it was, but I was there from the beginning and a part of the nay-sayers who understands why they cant sell the dock any cheaper initially.

There ya go bud. Pretty much anything from anker is killer.
Maybe this? I did find this one with two ports, but it's not as nice IMO. And I think the first one being rotatable is really convenient.
You could try this one, as it is cheap bear in mind that it could be a poor quality product.
Desert West

This satechi one is slightly cheaper and from a more reliable company.
Satechi
Sounds like most people in higher ed today: Several crucial factors missing in the theoretical world, check. Errors in grammar, check. Obviously poor because completing PHD and needs to buy more computer stuff, check.
So the obvious answer:
1 x these
and
10 x these
$865
Or
4 x these
$800
So, I was looking into reviews of products from this brand and there are some really really bad reviews :( Should I still buy it? Check:
