hello! hope you’ll be feeling better soon. gaming will be an awesome time-consumer and you picked a great console for it. here’s some advice for you!

as far as fps games go, I’d recommend far cry 3 or 4. they’re very deep and fun, with lots of customization and freedom to play however you want. you can play stealthily, which sounds like what you’d do, or go in guns blazing and have fun that way too. ghost recon wildlands is a third-person shooter, but it still has solid gameplay and a massive world to explore. the far cry games especially are usually very cheap; they go on sale pretty regularly and physical copies on amazon won’t break your wallet.

yes you can! any game you buy through the store on the xbox or xbox.com does not require a disc and is downloaded directly to your hard drive. as a general rule of thumb, a digital download is superior to a disc in pretty much every way.

game downloads are getting to be pretty goddamn huge nowadays, especially with 4k updates. some games have excellent textures already and don’t require a bunch of extra files to increase the resolution, but others can be quite large. i’m pretty sure that the biggest games on the xbox store right now (with all dlc and updates installed) each clock in at around 100 gb, give or take. as far as i know, no game is above that threshold yet, but newer 4k games will end up being bigger. the one x will ship with a terabyte of storage (which will probably end up being around 750ish after accounting for preinstalled software) which seems like plenty, but will add up relatively fast. i would strongly recommend buying a 4TB or larger seagate external storage drive. they’re super handy as you can just plug them in and go!

hmm, not quite sure what you mean. you need an HDMI cord to plug into the tv itself from the xbox, but what do you mean by receiver? an audio receiver of some sort? i don’t have surround sound so i’m probably not an expert on this stuff.

elite: dangerous is a fantastic space sim. it can be extraordinarily deep and complex if you want it to be; it’s got a fully fleshed out economy and political faction system etc. that really can change the game. however, if you wanna just fly around in a literal scale model of the milky way, you can do that too, and it’s extremely relaxing and fun. also, the game will be absolutely gorgeous on that mouthwatering tv you’ve got.

hope i helped, and again, feel better soon!

Just upgrade your storage.

__

Internal Drive

I'm assuming you have a 2013 model, but on any version of the PS4, replacing the internal drive is easy. It really only gets a little complicated if you want to back up your data beforehand, which you'll need to do if you want to keep your saved screenshots and video clips (though game save data and system settings will be backed up to the cloud if you have PS+, but make sure they're uploaded first). Keep in mind though that if you are thinking about re-downloading everything instead of backing up-- accepting the lost of your screenshots and video clips in the process-- this also means re-downloading all of your games.

__

The choice of what kind of drive you upgrade to is up to you.

  • If you want to considerably reduce your load times across the board, you could opt for a 1TB SSD. Sounds expensive, but SSDs have had a drastic decrease in cost over the years, so a fast, 1TB drive to cut down your load times isn't unreasonable.
  • Whether you want to get the most affordable upgrade possible or if you prioritize storage size and cost over speed, a standard HDD will do the job. NOTE: The drive options in the HDD links go past 2TB, but those larger drives are 15mm drives instead of 9mm. Long story short, nothing past 2TB will fit in a PS4 without modifications.
  • For a mix of speed and storage space / budget, you could pick up the in-between option, a hybrid drive. There's a bit of nuance to these drives, but if you're looking for the best of both worlds with a single drive, a hybrid drive does offer increased performance without sacrificing storage space.

    _

To change out your PS4's internal drive (after backing up), turn off your PS4 and change out the drives. You'll have to get the PS4 update software from here, but, do not download it from the blue button, that's a different file than what you need. Scroll down to this part of the page and click on "Perform a new installation of the system software." Read through the instructions there, and you'll download the system software from the link under step 2. Then, turn your PS4 on in Safe Mode and install the system software.

There, your system's drive is upgraded and installed, now you just restore from your PS+ cloud save or your physical drive backup.

    _

    External Drive

If you don't want to deal with all of the work of changing out your internal drive, or maybe you want to run a dual-drive system, you can use an external drive.

A good USB 3.0 drive makes a great option for bulk storage. This way you won't be limited by what can fit in your system, but more importantly, you'll have the option to separate slower bulk storage from a faster internal drive.

If you included the above external drive with, say, a 500GB or a 1TB SSD, you can have your OS, capture data, and frequently played / bigger games on a faster drive, giving your better load times across the board, whilst still having a secondary bulk drive for your game collection. This is personally what I'd recommend.

But again, if you're just looking for an easy way to increase you system's storage capacity without dealing with hard drive swapping or OS installation, you could just get a large-capacity external drive.

    __

    The Point is

Instead of getting rid of games and getting new ones, just increase the amount of space you can use to store them.

  • Desktop (i5-8GB RAM, GTX 660 < lol also gotta agree) Just general use I guess? I don't do anything special on it apart from hashcat sometimes, it's also my vmware server that hosts all my test/exploitable vms, runs xubuntu (noh8m8 it's got ez driver support cbf dealing with arch/gentoo driver installs, tried it once, it failed so hard, runs awesome window manager as well))

  • Macbook Air (2012 11") fucking love this thing, i can take it anywhere, decent battery life, runs xubuntu again for the AWESOME driver support, runs awesome wm, use it for general terminal stuff, I normally live in a full screen tmux session.

  • Wifi Pineapple (It was a gift :c) I actually use this as a torified router and as a fake AP, pretty cool I guess, dont use it enough, I laughed so hard at the Hackers Quote from the hack though, it was a pretty stupid vuln, hey let's execute code BEFORE AUTH, THIS CAN ONLY GO WELL, ugh whatever I digress, decent I guess, don't really use it that much

  • Raspberry Pi (lollovethis) running gentoo, just a mess about box, totally torified, sometimes i use tmux/weechat/ssh but mostly it just sits looking badass in its case. (gentoo arm is weird)

  • Bunch of SDR Stuff, two USB rubber duckies (lolbadusb) saw these fuckers and knew they had stupidly large potential, this was before the badusb release, actually well done hak5, this was a solid product, I don't really use it enough, was thinking of buying one for a friend for christmas but idk.

  • About 10 - 20 USBs in various sizes (dont even know what i keep on them, i normally just rm -rf them and use them to transfer data between macbook and desktop, sometimes it's for backups though)

  • 2TB USB Portable Hard-drive (not currently in my possession, yay parents) awesome though, drop proof, USB3, it's just love and it's just life (http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-USB-External-Hard-Drive/dp/B005MNGQ6C)

Probably going to make my own router sometime this month, been wanting to play about with PFsense.

uh that's about it, not just hacking stuff just general useful stuff I use quite often/think is cool.

It already is possible to use a flash drive with an iOS device in a very limited way:

http://www.macworld.com/article/2103582/using-a-flash-drive-with-an-ipad.html

The Mophie Space Pack may have built in storage at a pretty impressive cost, but it also has significant limitations. Everything has to be accessed through the Mophie App, and this is what a CNET reviewer found about that:

"The Space App automatically organizes files into Photos, Videos, Music, Documents, and "Other files." Documents open in read-only format in the Space App, but can be opened in other apps, like Google Drive, if they're on your phone. Music files play in the app but can't be imported into the iOS 7 Music app. Video files need to be DRM-free: iTunes purchases can't be stored on the Space Pack. And, not all video files will play back: I had success with M4V and MOV files, but not AVI. (According to Mophie, you could open an AVI in a third-party app, but it won't transfer unless it's under 100MB in size.) The Space Pack supports a lot of formats, though, mirroring the iPhone's playback capabilities: MOV, MP4, M4V, 3GP, MP2, MPA, MPE, MPEG, MPG, MPV2, QT, LSF, LSX, ASF, ASR, ASX, and MOVIE."

http://m.cnet.com/reviews/mophie-space-pack/35834113

So, this device essentially works the same way as most other external storage solutions for iOS. Content has to be accessed through an storage vendor app, and content can only be transferred between apps that support some type of capacity to do so. This really is due to the security features of iOS that require apps and their data to be sandboxed. This makes iOS devices very safe, but cause limitations.

In spite of these limitations, there are actually already a lot of external storage options these days for iDevices, some examples:

SanDisk Connect 64 GB Wireless Media Drive (SDWS1-064G-A57)

Some of these create their own WiFi for you to connect to for transfer purposes.

I don’t have an easy answer for you. I have been looking for an 8TB drive for some time now myself, and have spent far too much time comparing options. I would love to hear everyone’s opinion!

I also haven’t looked that much at encryption, hopefully someone here knows more about that part.

I've tired the wd ones above with okay results. I ended up deciding to use an iPad as my portable backup solution vs the stand-alone device. Since it has other useful features that help the workflow and is good for importing photos. (Moving them around it's not awesome but it at least is a second copy for safe keeping.)

I've heard the dji copilot it a better experience than the wd but it's not an SSD it's it's expensive for a standard hard disk. You don't need the newest iPad for this to work. That's my take on it at least.

Good luck to you!

I bought a used wii at a pawnshop for ~$60 (make sure to buy one that has the ports to attach GC memory card and controllers), a refurbished 1tb hd for ~$80, a 2gb SD card (it specifically cannot be sdhc, so thats why its small) for ~$6 and softmodded the wii to play gamecube and wii games that are loaded onto the hard drive. The process is simple, but there are a lot of steps, so it will take some time to read through the directions and get everything done. Here is a link to the guide that I followed:

http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/96886-guide-softmod-any-wii.html

I then added dios mios using this guide (allows you to play GC backups, you need an actual memory card to save games for a lot of titles):

http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-guides-tutorials/103429-guide-dios-mios-v2-10-play-gamecube-backups-your-usb-hdd.html

You don't need to physically alter the wii using this method and I have never modded a wii or any other game console before this one, so anyone can do it. Just make sure to follow the steps carefully and read it thoroughly before you start.

Monoprice.com is an excellent source for cables and other peripherals if your used wii doesn't come with them, I suggest getting the component cable for best picture quality.

You don't have to use the exact things I used, I just included the links so you had a reference and somewhere to start. I like the portable hd I got because it is powered by the usb port on the wii, so I didn't have to find a place to plug it in. Be careful which hd you get, some usb 3.0 harddrives can have compatibility issues with a softmodded wii, the forum in the links above have a topic that includes a list of compatible harddrives.

You've got a great machine, actually. It's not all that old, and it should be fairly snappy. But it sounds like you could greatly benefit from a Nuke and Pave.

Before we go any further, I want to confirm that your Snow Leopard DVD looks like this disc. If it does, we can just continue. If not, post a picture of the disc and let's figure out what you've got.

First, let's deal with your backup question: Buy yourself a USB External HD. This Western Digital model is available in several different sizes, to fit your budget. Use it to back up your iPhoto Library, then after we've reinstalled Snow Leopard, you should use it as a Time Machine destination.

Time Machine is
very important, as it's a fantastic backup solution that requires no maintenance after the initial setup. It's something every* Mac user should be using. But don't set it up yet. No use in setting it up only to have to start over later. For now, just copy the iPhoto Library (along with any other documents or apps you want to save for later) to the drive. If you don't have a copy of iPhoto somewhere, I'd suggest moving the app to your external HD as well.

Now that you've copied everything you want to save, you can just stick your Snow Leopard disc into the computer, and restart the Mac while holding the C key down. Wait until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen, then let go of C. It will boot up into the DVD. You're going to want to go into Disk Utility, erase your internal HD, and then reinstall Snow Leopard on your freshly wiped HD.

If you've got any questions, feel free to ask.

> That's a lot of work for me to basically record PBS ... I don't watch any of those shows.

Less work than you think. I had my whole setup up and running in about 35 minutes or so.

There's some gaps in there. Notice there's nothing after May of 2017. Zilch for 2018.

>I literally would not know what to do with local channels, I already have a pretty large HDTV antenna on my roof and I get maybe 10 channels.

Your antenna may just need to be repointed. TVFool and a compass can do a lot. It's also possible you have a crappy TV tuner. The tuners put into TV sets and USB dongles/PCIe cards in the early 2000s were pretty crappy. Newer ones a significantly better. When I swapped out my WinTV HVR-950Q for a HDHR Connect I saw a dramatic increase in reception.

>I mean sure I could record Bobs Burgers or something on Fox, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but those are the only shows on regular over the air channels that I watch and I barely even watch them.

That's kind of the magic of a DVR. Set your recording rules to keep storage manageable and they'll just be there whenever you get the urge to watch it.

I mean, for example, my mom and I love Cook's Country and America's Test Kitchen. Every Sunday we'd sit down on the couch and watch it. When I moved out I've kind of fallen out of that habit, but from time to time I still do like to sit down and watch them. So whenever I'm all like "what should I watch," I can say, "oh, I'll watch ATK" and a recording will be sitting there, waiting for me.

I don't have to go out and find a torrent (since it's not available streaming), wait for it download, and then get it into Plex or whatever. I just go press play. I've got the recording rules set up to keep only the three most recent showings, and set it to a relatively low priority.

>Spending $200 so I can record 3 shows I don't care about is really offputting, but thanks for the hardware recommendations.

Actually the HVR-150PVR goes for $30 on Amazon, add a cheap hard drive and you've got everything you need for less than $100. That's less than a month's worth of coffee shop visits.

>I doubt any of that can be DVR'd without also paying for cable and many add-on packs to get HBO/Starz etc.

Well of course not, but while I have a DVR I still have Netflix and Amazon Prime. It's a supplement, not a replacement. Helps save on the data caps, gets some oddball programming that isn't commonly available, and enables me to follow special programming that may not be available streaming. Like CBS.

Leslie Moonves has an enormous stick up his ass about streaming. But putting up an antenna and DVR'ing 60 Minutes is pretty easy. No muss, no fuss. No need to set up VPNs and play with Sonarr and SickBeard, juggling around Plex libraries, and stuff like that, just to watch a show that is available to me, for free, legally, all I have to do is pluck it out of the air.

u/onliandone · 4 pointsr/buildapcforme
I might have missed something, but I don't think that's possible. Which racing game are you thinking about?

Yeah, you could get one monster PC with multiple processors and SLI, but afaik VR does not properly work with that. Multiple GPUs each running their own OS? Maybe possible, but that's too much tinkering, and not guaranteed to work at all. 4 gpus would also be too much for the board, I think.

But $20,000 is a lot of money. Let's say the four seats cost $5000, as with https://rseatamerica.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=67. The displays could cost under $1000, 4x https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XF240H-bmjdpr-24-inch-FreeSync/dp/B01DHTWZRQ. For the wheels, Logitech makes good ones, though they are expensive: 4x https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Driving-Racing-Feedback-Steering/dp/B00Z0UWV98, $1500 (edit: Note the alternative recommendations in the comments to this comment, apparently this wheel is not a popular option). Keyboard 4x https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823816015, $300. The headphones, https://www.amazon.com/AKG-240-Semi-Open-Studio-Headphones/dp/B0001ARCFA is an option, $220. Though maybe you want closed ones.

That leaves for the interesting part $12000, for the PCs. And of course that is more than enough to get 4 VR capable gaming PCs:

External Storage has too many options, could be as simple as https://www.amazon.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBFJK0060HBK-NESN/dp/B00KU686HI linked to one PC, or a real NAS system. But that would be a topic of its own.

So, given that gigantic budget possible. Practical? Well, on you to judge. You definitely want to double-check everything I wrote, it is not like I (or anyone around her, most probably) has ever created a setup such as this before.

I am just finishing my college thesis film and I am wondering what everyone's recommended long term storage / backup for their films are? I will have 2 copies, one at my house and one in a family member's safe deposit box. In addition to my thesis film, this same crew worked on a short that we never set up a good footage backup system in place so I would want to retain a copy of that as well. For that film the raw files were about 460 GB. For my thesis film my DP & editor are guesstimating around 2 TB for the raw files. My editor is giving me his G-Technology 2 TB that he got for the thesis film and I have an extra 1 TB hard drive for the other project, so I would only need to get a 3 TB drive for a second copy of both projects. I am planning on buying a naked hard drive and have been looking at WD's offerings and can't decide which would be best for long term video storage. Should I get the 3TB WD Blue because of the entry level cost? Or would a 3TB WD Purple be better since it has a longer warranty, is only 5$ more, and is more marketed for video files? Or should I get a larger drive such as the WD 8TB Easystore, and keep using it until I fill it up with another project or two?

Do you have any other suggestions for me to look at for a long term backup of a film?

Edit: affiliate links that go towards the film.

2 TB is a great space option. It will allow you to hold a ton of things and you shouldn't run out of space if you only have a few games and apps

This one is very good and a great price. I had it for about 2 years, but gave it to my friend since I upgraded to a 5TB.

I would say go with 2TB. 1TB in my opinion just isn't enough since you have to sacrifice about 150-200 gbs to software. Plus 2TB is usually only 20-30 dollars more than 1TB.

Yeah, IF. They don't know if the deal was because of his Prime membership or not because he didn't say.

Plus someone said this:

>That explanation is not the same as the previous ones, from what I can tell. The original issue, was one that I also was curious about, which was simply that the item was listed as prime. It did not mention it was a Prime Deal, which yes, would be different. However, I went to Besy Buy today and they gladly matched an Amazon Prime priced item, which is all I wanted to clarify. There are many posts where people are saying they won't accept any price matching at all if a item is Prime, and that simply is NOT the case! Happy shipping to all!

I also saw another comment from a BB Specialist:

> Regarding the Amazon Prime exception, what this means is that our policy does not cover pricing that is only available to select groups of customers including loyalty offers, discounts relating to non-warehouse membership programs and government exchange store offers. An example of this would be Prime Day deals or deals that are only available to Prime members. This does not mean that an item that is Prime shipping eligible would be excluded, and we would still be able to match these prices.

_____

So just because it has Prime in the item description, doesn't mean they won't price match it. You just have to look to make sure it's not Prime Deal/Day special.

Prime deal only - not eligible You can tell because it says, "You Save: $1.30 (10%) as a Prime member"

Prime but deal is for everyone - eligible You can tell because it says, "You Save: $6.86 (14%) " Also, "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." Which is currently a lower price than Best Buy

I've got a very similarly specd server (dual x5670s with 72gb ram) I've got Unraid running as the OS/hypervisor and lots of things running on that (VMs, docker containers, lots of network shares) if you haven't settled on an os yet, I'd strongly suggest checking out unraid. There's a YouTube creator called Spaceinvader One that had lots of great tutorials on using unraid for lots of different things.

As far as your storage situation goes, unraid allows the use of a cache drive, so you can quickly send info to the server and it'll write to the cache drive (mines a 1tb 860 evo) and then later it'll move the data from the cache to your parity protected array. (assuming you opt for a parity drive) A few WD Red drives work great in the array, don't necessarily need to go overboard with SAS drives, those high rpms will suck down lots of power. If you need to pick up a few large capacity drives on the cheap, try grabbing a few of these and shucking them from the enclosures. I just picked up two of them. they have WD red 5400rpm 256mb cache drives in them.

So what will he be connecting to it with? If the USB is only for power how will he connect?

Either way, here's one I found on amazon after a quick search. sure youll have to pay a bit more... but its whatever.

Another tip: The harddrives should be fine given theyre in good packaging. Im sure you could get by with a small camera case or something. I'm sure he doesn't plan to use the harddrive (and computer to use it) while in a landslide, firefight, or dolphin invasion. So anyone that can be transported easily should fare well!

Great advice. Here's the perfect solution, great for storage size, ease of use, portability, and value:

If the music is on the external hard drive then yes, you would have to have it plugged in to listen to it. If it is stored on the computer itself then no. You would just play it from the computer. I’ll assume you’re using iTunes. All you would have to do is let iTunes know where your music is stored.

The drives I recommended are solid state. You don’t necessarily need solid state but they are much faster than a spinning drive. Something like this would suit you just fine and save you a few bucks.

Yeah depending on how long you plan to keep the laptop (eventually upgrade day comes for us all), you may also want to consider a smaller faster hard-drive for the computer and then an external drive to store everything. This Seagate 4TB drive is what I use to store my movies and TV shows. I actually have two of them. Cost about $120 up here in local currency.

Now people with laptops come in two flavors, people who need laptops, and people who pick laptops because they're the first thing. Now again budget depending if you have $500-$600 dollars we can build you a desktop computer that'll have all the expansion room you want. You do lose Mac OS X but that isn't always a deal breaker depending.

Wow I always forget how much cheaper things are in the US. Anyway keep us informed on which way you go and how it was installing the hard-drive yourself.
u/summerstorms17 · 4 pointsr/techsupport

Cloud storage isn't really cost effective for this sort of thing. You could get a NAS, I just set up a Synology for work, super easy, made me feel cool, etc. But, that's probably overkill. You could also get a 4-6TB external hard drive for half the price of a cheap NAS solution. Then just store your movies in 2 places so if one fails, you're covered.

But, if you have money to blow and you want to have a sweet set up, I do highly recommend a Synology NAS with some WD red drives.

I got this Seagate 8tb drive last black Friday for around $120 and it works great with my Xbox.

Also the Astros a50s are awesome. My wife bought me the Master Chief Editionwhen we first started dating 3 years ago and they still work great.
Astro A10sare also awesome. She wanted a pair of Astros last year as she plays with me but on a smaller TV. The a10s only require a wire going from the headset to the controller and they work great.

WD Passport for a small, self powered drive you can carry around with you. Available from 500GB to 2TB.

WD My Book for a larger, external powered drive if you're mainly going to leave it on your desk and plugged in all the time. 1 to 4TB capacities available.

Toshiba Canvio for a bit more budget conscious but still reliable choice. From 1 to 3TB.

I'm currently using a pair of 1TB Passports that stay in the photo bags and get used for transfers and backups in the field. They get pretty abused and still work great. I'm using a 3TB Toshiba for storage at home and it's also been a great performer.

Buy the largest you can afford. 500GB may sound like a lot, but it really isn't. I don't know the volume of photos you take but I generated 442GB of photos last year. This year, I'm at 582GB and counting.

A use-case would be beneficial but WD has the My Passport Wireless Pro. It doesn't support Mega.nz, it may support Dropbox, and it certainly can be used while charging. It has USB 3.0, 802.11ac, and comes in sizes ranging from 1TB to 4TB.

I have an older version of this device that I bought about 4-5 years ago; it's really handy while traveling.

You should be able to, but anything could go wrong. If there's anything I've learned in my sixteen years of working with computers, it's backing up valuable data no matter what. Personally, I use an external hard drive to manually back up my data. Compress what you can to save space, unpacking in your new computer or OS may take more time, but this will help keep your data organized and secure. I use WinRAR ($6.00 - $21.00 USD). You can add a recovery record with WinRAR to recover files in the event of corruption*.

Backing up data manually isn't usually the prefered method, but I find it to be the most secure. My Seagate 5TB external drive ($129.99 USD) has been very reliable. I can give you tips on backing up data if you are unsure where to look, or what to back up.

  • Recovery records do not guarantee recovery in all cases. Adding a recovery record will increase an archive's size anywhere from 7-10%. WinRAR is technically free, paying for a licanse only removes the nag dialog.
u/Fueled-By-Tea · -1 pointsr/xboxone

I agree with u/russellwd that a 4TB or there abouts is the minimum space you should have; I'm very surprised that the X is only has a 1TB, to the point where I'm convinced it's malicious and they plan to release a higher capacity model down the line.

If you have the money, a 8TB might be better. The one I'm looking at is the same one MS provided to the media/journalists from a post I saw on Reddit (please correct me if I'm wrong), so I think it's a fair better that it'll perform very similar to the X's internal drive.

Assuming an iPhone spec camera, that would equal 170mb per minute of 4K30 or 400mb per minute of 4K60. They would record at approximately 2.8mb/s and 6.67mb/s.

An 8TB hard drive with write speed of 160mb/s should have more than enough bandwidth to handle 4K60 recording. This HDD.

How much can you record on an 8TB hard drive?

8TB is 8 million megabytes so dividing it by (400*60) would give us 333.333 hours of footage. That’s about 13.8 days of footage at 4K60

Most security cameras overwrite footage so using an 8TB hard drive would give you almost 2 weeks of footage you can go back on before it’s overwritten. That’s enough time for law enforcement to grab a copy of the footage.

At 4K30, that gives you 32.6 days of footage. So it doesn’t have anything to do with storage. I’m guessing the initial costs just don’t seem to justify the increased resolution for most business owners.

This system costs $630 for four 4K cameras and 2TB storage. Whereas a system with four 720p cameras like this costs $170. That’s almost 4 times the initial cost. Still sucks in cases like these though.

Edit: as someone pointed out this data is true for 1 camera. If you do 8 cameras you can compress the footage to 50% of its original size without major loss of data for more efficient storage. Or compress anyways for double the timespan.

However if all you need is to go back 7 days on footage at 4K30, two 8TB hard drives will provide that with compression on 8 cameras. Regardless, it’s still not astronomically expensive.

u/hesaidwhatupdeezus · 11 pointsr/ipad

That should be enough. You can also purchase a wireless HDD like I did. I usually take the SD card and insert it to this wireless HDD and it automatically imports it. There’s an app you can download for this specific wireless HDD to transfer the files over to your iPad Pro. I bought it for photo storage from my Fujifilm and videos from my Drone/GoPro. The only downside it’s relatively slow at transferring these huge 4K videos and buffers a lot when streaming. But it transfers photos relatively quickly. Here’s the link:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X6H1LY6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There’s also a SSD version but they are way more expense.

Oh and it’s great for exporting/importing excel documents and small types of files.

Happy (slightly early) cake day!

  1. I'm in desperate need of a portable hard drive.

  2. The person I love most in the world has to be my mother. There has been no one else in my life who been more loving or supportive. I always equate our relationship to that of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, only the banter isn't necessary as quick or quite as witty. She is more than a mom, she's my friend. When times get hard, I always know she'll be there for me, to lending a hand or shoulder or ear, whatever need be. She has been through all the trials and tribulations that I've suffered through and her dedication has never wavered. And neither has mine. She is the one person I never want to disappoint.

Do you have the game installed on an external drive? If not pick one of these or these up. The internal drive only spins at 5400 rpm so it only has a theoretical read speed of 145Mbps. Which isn't great since you need to install your games anyway.

But if you do already own an external drive and it's installed to it, then you might actually have an overheating issue. Buy a can of compressed air from your local store and blow it out from the top where the fan is and then on the sides. Then take a vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment and give it a good scrub on the sides and top.

I had overheating issues since I own a day one edition xbox one and I do like the "intercoolers" that clip on the top because of where it sits in my tv center it blows the hot air out the front away from the intake on the sides.

$180US+ depending on model just looking at Amazon. So, close enough to consider the pros/cons/price of tape vs just using, as example, a $190US WD external 6TB (http://www.amazon.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBFJK0060HBK-NESN/dp/B00KU686HI/) and shelving it. I'd also consider the While label WD Reds for $180.

I have 100 games in my library at the moment. Like you I have the 500GB but I'm using a USB powered 2TB Toshiba External Hard drive. The only thing I think you need to look out for is make sure it's a normal hardrive. My brother bought one that prompted you with a menu for the harddrive when plugged into a PC, those will not work.

Here is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-Drive/dp/B00N2S6W86?th=1

Edit: just looked up the WD one you mentioned at in the description it talks about back up software. If this is the case it may very well not work on the Xbox as it has inbuilt software. For the Xbox you need a HDD with no software. If we were talking USB stick I would say you're basically looking for a Kingston not a Sandrive as Sandrives have their own menu when plugged in.

>I don't really like backing up my data to the cloud, and many others may feel the same too.

I use syncthing to sync my important stuff with a raspberry pi zero with a HDD connected to it at home. that way all my data is stored on the hdd, in the event my phone gets lost/stolen/broken. the setup is really cheap, i use a drive like this, with a raspberry pi zero w, and a simple USB power supply. everything for just under 50 euro's, with space to spare!

the pi is on 24/7, but because the drive turns off when not in use, but the power consumption is much lower than my daily phone usage, so not expensive at all.

and if you are using the pi, another thing i run on it is pi-hole, which is a network ad-blocker, so i can easily block most ads at home, and with wireguard(a vpn program), i can make a secure connection to my home to also block ads on-the-go, or make my whole connection secure(which is pretty slow, but usable).

TL;DR: buy a pi+drive, never lose data, block ads, and have a secure connection.

if someone needs some help, i can always help you, even for the most beginners.

also! if it does work and you do get it to turn on, back up as much of your stuff as you can! if the display is working but the keyboard or trackpad does not for whatever reason, try putting it in target disk mode if you have the proper equipment; heres a tutorial on how to do that! you should scroll to scenario #3, using a migration assistant, if you try this.

I really hope you're able to get it up and running soon-- Macs are weirdly finicky and unfortunately this stuff can happen without warning signs which is why regular backups are good! if you need an external hard drive we usually recommend Seagate to students at my school (but were all artists so we need loads of storage, so you may want one with less space if you aren't going to use up a whole TB)

The reason why I'm saving up for the 2TB portable HD is because I normally work with a lot of files in my computer, especially now that I've gone back to experimenting with making computer games. Here's my test level featuring my monster creation, Mr. Pincer :D

3 different drives:

  1. 3TB

    Samsung

    [D3 Desktop - STSHX-D301TDB] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Desktop-External-Drive-STSHX-D301TDB/dp/B00C9TEOCA)

  2. 2TB

    Western Digital

    [My Passport X - WDBCRM0020BBK-NESN] (https://www.amazon.com/Passport-Portable-External-Drive-WDBCRM0020BBK-NESN/dp/B00V7RJCD6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483976596&sr=1-1&keywords=xbox+one+x+western+digital)

  3. 1TB

    Western Digital

    [My Passport Ultra - WDBGPU0010BBK-NESN] (https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Ultra-Portable-External/dp/B00W8XXRPM/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483976780&sr=1-2&keywords=my+passport+ultra+1tb)

I'm sure this list seems like overkill, but our household has two Xbox Ones and so we have a lot of redundancy between the 3TB and the 2TB. I'll be honest and say there isn't really anything on the 1TB, it was just laying around the house and is plugged into the Xbox waiting. All games are stored on Externals with only Apps taking up space on the internal drives.

However, if what you want is expandable storage, then you might want to take a look a Wifi enabled hard drives

Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB Portable Hard Drive with Built-in WiFi (STCK1000100)

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Wireless-Portable-Built--STCK1000100/dp/B00AQRUW4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419521928&sr=8-1&keywords=Seagate+wireless+plus

A lot more storage, has its own battery rated to last for ~10 hrs (doesn't consume the N9's battery), and you don't have to worry about future devices having OTG support or not when trying to use it. (it works with anything that is wifi capable).

Edit: here's just the enclosure if you happen to have an HDD lying around already.

EDIT 2: After an afternoon of researching different options, I have decided on buying at some point in the near future this to solve any storage needs I may have with present or future nexus devices (it accepts any USB flash drive or SD card reader, and can be easily accessed as a NAS on ES File Explorer):

I love having one that is USB-powered so I only need one cable for my entertainment area. I got this one:

I have had a WD My Book Essential 3 TB for just over a month now and it still works fine. Feel free to ask me in 2 months if it's still working, as I expect it to last at least the next 2 years, and hopefully the next 5 years.

u/Stealthy-J · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

Yeah you can. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Portable-External-Drive-STGX1000400/dp/B07CRG7BBH?th=1

Just hooks up through the usb port. That is an easy solution if you don't want to open it up.

I got it for 65, it's 79 now but still great for a 2tb

  1. question
I was wondering if someone could reccomend me a camera. Since i am going on a trip around the wolrd this year i am looking for a camera that i can easily take with me and shoot landscapes and structures. I have like 600-700€ i could spare.
  2. question
Since I'm not taking a laptop with me, is there a good alternative where i can store my images. I read a little bit about some portable external hard drives like
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M9B3XZM/ref=twister_B00MPLHB7C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
but is there no cheaper solution?

Thank you in advance and sorry for my english
u/forgeflow · 1 pointr/fo4

You really need to install the game on an SSD. Even an SSD plugged in via USB 3 will be superior to your hard drive. http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Military-Tested-External-TS1TSJ25M3/dp/B005MNGQ6C/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1462760314&sr=8-8&keywords=usb+3+ssd+external

I'm sure there's cheaper ones, but that'll do the job nicely.

u/Calvinshobb · 3 pointsr/gratefuldead

I have tried about a dozen. Go with one without an external power supply. Better to buy a few 2.5 TB ones than put everything on a 5TB and have it fail. BACK IT UP. Over writing is the enemy and can lead to errors in the long run. So in short have a 2.5 HD that you use as your player, this you can delete add delete as you wish, but keep everything else on another HD that you only write to and only connect to add more source material to. I have had amazing performance from the Toshiba, they are very sturdy cased as well.

I'll try to keep tabs on everything but let me know if there are any errors or price updates. And as a side note, I'm actually getting downvotes for this? I can't see how there could possibly be a sane explanation for that.

EDIT: Updated 7:00pm EST!! Let me know if there's anything you see and I'll put it in here!

EDIT: I've put everything new as of Jan 11, 4:00pm in bold. Also, check this post on RedFlagDeals for a great big list of deal

EDIT: Its all over everyhone. Hope you snagged something cool beyond bitter disappointment this year!**

You need to give a bit more info tbh. Where are you buying this from? Space needed? Budget?
I use this one which serves me well, but this and this also look good too.

Just sounds like another one of those "gaming" devices like this that are just the same device with a different look and gaming/ps4/xbox slapped on the box and charge $20+ more for it. Though oddly enough it actually costs the same as the regular WRT 32X so I'm guessing they are simply going for more sales through brand recognition versus the original.

i used those and an icy hot dock. Since the first pair is already showing uncorrectable errors, I'm going to run the mirrored pair until failure but nix my plans of expanding another pool of storage on them.

I had plans of 6 x 5tb in 2 icy hot docks, using 2 5.25" bays that are currently idle in my nas case, and utilizing a dell h310 flashed to IT mode for pass through. it looks like for reliablity in the smaller size I'm limited to WD blacks.

OP, did you know by any chance that you can actually have 1TB - 6TB on your iPhone? you can buy a external hdd here and you'll have so much room for movies, music ect.

Just my two cents :)

What is the benefit of running off that versus something like this and putting it in my Shield's USB port?

u/Terajima92Ryoko · 1 pointr/playstation

Just a suggestion: I ordered an external hard drive and that works for me. You just plug it in to the ps4 via USB. It’s weird cuz technically you could unplug it mid-game and you’d lose everything. But it’s also portable. So bring it to a friends and play the games on their ps4. I didn’t think it was worth buying another ps4 or trading in so I went the slightly cheeper, and easier route. The link for it is here on Amazon. 2 TB. Around $80

I have four that I shucked from:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZP2B23/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and put them in one of these:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817998243

Do they work fine?

Yep.

I have had them almost a year and no complaints. They are trouble free enough that when I sit down and plan expansion I forget they are there and think "WTF? I could swear this pool was supposed to be 20TB bigger." Where I come from, that's a good thing.

Keep in mind, I am using them in a pool with Stablebit DrivePool so I can't vouch for performance in a true RAID or ZFS setup.

The only thing that caught me off guard was that they are 15mm thick so adapters and bays made for your standard 7-9mm drives won't work.

u/terrtravels · 1 pointr/backpacking

Just realised my HDD is a knock off of a WD wireless. http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Wireless-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B00M9B3XZM Toshiba make a similar product that is much cheaper.I think it's called the 'Canvio'.

u/EricBledsoeIsASnake · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Thanks for this. Is there a particular western digital model you recommend for Xbox? I was looking at My Passport X or Elements

u/SigmaTheDJ · 2 pointsr/xboxone

I started off with a 1TB external, which I quickly realised was too small, so I sold it to a friend and got a 4TB. My 4TB was over 80% full, so last week I bought an 8TB - one of these: -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Backup-Desktop-External-Integrated/dp/B01IAD5ZC6/

8TB is overkill for most people, but I was thinking ahead to Scorpio as I should be able to use the same drive with that. Also, I like having all the games I own installed.

u/incarniac · 2 pointsr/DataHoarder

In the UK you can get the Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB for ~£180 from a few places. From what I read they contain Seagate Archive 8TB drives, which may not suit your usage scenario, but it's a pretty decent price for 8TB (£22.50/TB).

ok, well check out (this)[http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQRUW4Q/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER] for your hard drive, and try (This)[http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/] for your folder sync. you can create a batch file using that free file sync and a tech can run it each time they get to the job site. or conversely you can program it to run every 5 minutes from the server.

Couple different options to choose from there, you have to pick which works best for you. I'd say have it broadcast from the server out to the hard drives and schedule a task to push every 5 minutes but that could result in lost data, or corrupted data.

The hard drive broadcasts wireless so your computer can connect to it, and then the hard drives connects to your wifi and via the hard drive you get internet. so your laptop would be constantly connected to the hard drive. and when you get in range the hard drive would connect.

next question, what kind of wireless infrastructure is in place? are you expecting drivers to get out and take hard drives inside? Or do you have wireless AP's outside?

Cloud drive is your best bet, but I'm no stranger to paranoid clients, hence my readiness to give you somewhat unconventional solutions.

How do you plan on implementing this? Do you have an IT Department? You say you have an FTP server, what kind of server?

You can get a WiFi hard drive (this, for example) which has an iOS app which you can use to move files to/from your phone. Basically, the hard drive creates a hotspot, you connect the phone, and you share your photos/videos to an app.

Alternatively, you can get iPhone-compatible flash drives (like this, for example).

There's similar stuff available for Android... actually, there's a lot more hardware and its a bit less convoluted to use because of Android's exposed filesystem and support for USB mass storage devices.

Thunderbolt-attached storage is essentially a buzzword used to sell you what is, at best, $900 of SSD in a $2k package; or $560 of enterprise HDD in a $850 package.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 (aka USB3, aka USB3.1, the 5 Gbps one) is, although slower than SATA 3, already faster than most people will notice for 80% of uses. USB 3.1 Gen 2 (the 10 Gbps one) is already faster than SATA 3 and can saturate lower-tier NVMe drives.

Are you looking for an external HDD or an external SSD?

  • You can get a 2TB external Samsung SSD for $410.
  • 4TB is the largest capacity that 2.5" hard disk drives are produced, and as such is the largest capacity you'll find on offer for small and compact portable drives. You can pick up a 4TB external HDD for about $100.
  • Any larger than 4TB and you're looking at a 3.5" drive, which will take up much more space and require an external power brick (it can't just be powered off of the USB port).

> Which Backblaze can only backup if I had a disk with an additional 400GB of free space, which I don't....

You could buy an external USB attached hard drive, and then tell Backblaze to use that as a "Temporary Data Drive". This 1 TByte Seagate drive from Amazon is $44: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CRG7BBH/

You could get a 500 GByte drive for as little as $18 on Amazon, but I like the "Seagate" brand name and the fact that it comes with a USB enclosure already built, and it's 1 TByte so you get a little spare headroom.

Here is a link on how to configure it as your Backblaze "Scratch Drive":

https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/217664748-Temporary-Data-Drive

Alternatively, you could find some other way to backup that one very large file, and exclude that file from your Backblaze Personal Backup?

u/SumoSizeIt · 2 pointsr/applehelp

I bought a 1tb version of this WD USB 3.0 drive because it was only $10 more than the USB 2.0 version, because I've had a good experience with WD's passport drives in the past, and because I still have wishful thinking that Apple will upgrade the USB ports of its next Macs. There are a few files on there when you get it, but you'll be reformatting the thing for HFS+ anyhow. If you want to find one with FW, you tend to pay a bit of a premium, and most of the cheaper drives use external power.

I think that should be able to hold a pretty big library. And, I don't see any reason you couldn't have more than 1, even if only 1 works at a time you could just switch them out. Each 3TB drive could hold ~100 30GB games.

u/mikesaintjules · 1 pointr/PS4

I guess the next step would be to try a flash drive instead and backup your data. The game install data, if your flash drive isn't large enough, maybe you can just delete them and re-install later to save time on that. Use the cloud on PS+ for game data also.

This is a HDD i'm using as an external for the PS4. I see a lot of people using this as a primary choice.

u/BennyGoId · 3 pointsr/PS4

An update file re-writes old game files for that respective game.

The reason why more space is required than what the update file tells you is because of storage limitations, prompting an error.

I encounter this issue very frequently because I have a lot of video clips stored on the System Storage (500 GB SSD), and every time I want to update a game that I know has to be updated and the file size for that update is less than 10 gigs, I have to delete or trim 15 or more gigs of video.

I highly recommend buying a 2TB SeaGate Game Drive (you can find it for ~$90).

I bought a new laptop a week ago and it's awesome!

The only thing is that it also has a 256GB SSD. So I bought a 1TB External Hard Drive for my files and stuff.

Sometimes I manage to get on the game and it just randomly show me the blue screen, sometimes it doesn't even launch the game.

the board in question

Edit: the board in question

There was an attempt to repair. But again I went with using a SATA jump cable option to try to offload the data directly from a drive but the result gave me a massive file/folder tree and upon backing it up my mom explicitly told me that the files she was looking from that drive was not in the backup.

(I don’t know what the >!fuck!< else to do cause I believed that the software used to do a byte level backup, OnTrack Easy Recovery, SHOULD have found and exposed what could be transferred over to another external hard drive)

I’ve updated the photos in question as it was “low resolution” and please note that this board comes from this device and NOT a personal computer just Incase there was a misinterpretation or misunderstanding.

At the moment, you can't get a better deal on performance, storage, and compatibility than getting one of these and shucking the drive out. I've done it multiple times for clients and it's plug and play. Just make sure you create Unifi/Protect backups before you swap the drive out so you can restore everything once it's all up and running again.

Also, if you have trouble getting the drive tray out push on the tray a bit while you move the slider. It's got some spring tension.

Define what a large file means to you, in this scenario.

If we are talking about 2MB spreadsheets and 9MB hi(ish)-res JPG all of that will work just fine from a Cloud service.

If we are talking about 300MB CAD projects and multi-gigglebyte videos, then that's a different story.

Also, I've never used one but WiFi enabled small NAS solutions do exist:

Hmm. So I now see. I am using an S2, Now a P2 by the looks of this, which I have had for quite a few years and an M3, which I believe may actually be a Maxtor drive. Australia does tend to get older stuff dumped upon it sometimes. Here are the P2 drives on Amazon (no affil link)

I did buy one of these Seagate 4TB only recently, and although happy with the read/write speeds, can't really comment on durability.

u/PaperMoonShine · 3 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

A lot of the times these portable drives are cheaper than regular drives and when they go on sale it makes it much cheaper to buy and "shuck" the case. I bought this 5tb portable drive on sale for 150, instead of dishing out 130 dollars more [on this internal one.] (https://www.amazon.ca/Seagate-Barracuda-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST5000LM000/dp/B01M0AADIX) It doesnt make sense for everyone but if you have an SFFPC or a laptop then its worth it to shuck.

Probably something like the Western Digital Wireless Pro. I used a Ravpower Filehub paired with a 2 TB Seagate as backup while on a two week trip through the Smokeys in September. Worked quite nice using a Kindle Fire to manage the drive. The Wireless Pro is supposed to be able to do all that in one unit, but I didn’t want to pay that much when I was getting things together for my trip.

I'm not very server literate, but if you're looking to store data you no longer need but do not seem to want to delete just in case, would buying something like this be an option? Or even a normal HDD and then running a SATA to USB cable, which would be cheaper but imo less durable.

Shouldn't be that difficult, depending where you are in the world. Here's an 8tb external drive for $139 which works out to $17/tb. That particular drive is relatively slow, but there are faster ones available. I bought 6 10tb SAS drives for $170 each a year ago.
