Reddit mentions: The best laptop backpacks

I want to start by saying I’m not affiliated with Amazon, nor are any of the links affiliate links. I’m just a guy that looks for good bargains and wants to share what I found.

Background:

I live in Austria and I’ve been flying micros, the TinyHawk, Mobula7, M80, and a custom 65mm since the beginning of the year in my apartment. Austria has super strict laws regarding UAV’s and you need an expensive license to fly anything larger than 250 grams. Under 250g’s, you’re free to fly as you please as long as you’re not flying around a populated area. I decided to go with micros for the time being to keep myself under the radar and get my flight time in before I eventually move back to the states in a couple years.

I’m generally a price conscious person and I’ll spend a lot of time looking for good deals, usually through Banggood. I’ll stuff something in my wishlist and wait for it to go on sale, the transmitter I got for 85€, goggles for 40€ etc. So, when I started looking for a backpack to become a bit more portable and fly away from my apartment, I got a bit of sticker shock when I saw the prices on “quad bags”. A buddy of mine suggested the bag he has, the Lowepro Quadguard BP X2, but at 110€ it would be the most expensive piece of my FPV equipment, additionally I needed something that would be able to hold my 15.6” laptop that I need for school, which the BP X2 does not have the space for. I looked at the other big budget backpack that is recommended around Reddit, which is the Realacc Backpack, but again, no space for a laptop.

After digging and digging, I decided the best way to go would be to get a camera bag that has a laptop sleeve. Enter the AmazonBasics DSLR and Laptop Backpack. I want to take a moment to say that there are 3 AmazonBasics bags that have the same description, only their dimensions are different, I’ll link the backpacks at the end. Fortunately, I decided on the backpack a few days before Prime Day and was able to pick it up for 27€. At the time of this writing, it is not on sale and is listed at 34€. I got it in and opened it up and immediately spent the next hour trying to arrange the padded walls to fit everything that I wanted to stuff inside. The timing was perfect because I would be going back to the US for a 3-week trip to visit family in 5 different states and I could run a nice torture test on it.

Items I brought in the bag for the 3 week trip:

Review:

Pros:

• Price! 27€
  
• The size was just about perfect. I say just about perfect with two caveats that are not enough to make them cons. I would have liked the top of the backpack to not taper in. The base of the bag is deeper than the top of the bag by a few centimeters. Similarly, the top of the bag also curves in on the sides a bit. Not enough to take away points, but enough that it is noticeable.
  
• Zipper feel. It’s a funny item to include, but the zippers feel really good, not overly robust, but incredibly smooth.
  
• Large laptop sleeve, good for up to a 17” laptop.
  
• Straps felt secure, additional straps for across the chest and waist are provided to help distribute weight. I found that I didn’t need the waist strap and there is no way to remove it without cutting them out, I was usually able to fold them over themselves to keep them out of the way, but I would have preferred to not have them. I did use the chest strap, however.
  
• Adjustable interior pads. These were really convenient; they gave a lot of options for configurability. I ended up not using the two longest pads though.
  
• Front pocket held a surprising number of items.
  
• The bag stood upright on its own with it fully loaded.
  
• Fit as a carry-on underneath the seat of every plane I was on, including some small regional jets! (some planes were tighter than others)
  
• Did I mention the price??

• Side pockets are fixed with a Velcro cover. This may not be a con to some people, but I would have rather had a mesh pocket with elastic. That would be much more versatile for my usage, that being said, I was able to stuff my laptop charger into the two pouches. (Main cable in one, and the brick in the other. My brick is pretty small, only 80cm or so YMMV).
  
• No straps on the outside of the front of the backpack to strap a larger quad. You could buy one of those adapters from ebay.
  
• It does have a feeling of being a little cheap, in my travels I didn’t have any fraying, but other reviews I read have reported fraying and seams unraveling after only a few months. I was generally quite mindful of the bag and didn’t throw it around too much.

  You can’t beat it for the price. If you’re a budget conscious flyer like me, and lets face it if you stuck around to read all of this than you are, it’s a no brainer just go and buy it.

1050d ballistic nylon means nothing to me. Why not a LL bean backpack? why not a regular wallet?

You say you have low cost higher end wallets, belts, backpack, but its not clear to me what exactly the value added is.....

How much better is the ballistic nylon than the regular nylon?

If this is a key selling point, I would play it up somehow, make me want it more. when you say its indestructible, I think nylon in general is indestructible more or less.....

So basically, as a consumer, it comes down to liking the look of the wallet or not, the number of pockets, and then the ballistic thing.

Yeah, I think you should really play up/explain the ballistic thing more, seems to be the big added value?

Sorry for being repetitive, but I like to point out in reviews/videos on MTG backpacks that the $29.99 AmazonBasics bag that the Professor reviewed before and alluded to at the beginning of this video is probably not even the best AmazonBasics camera bag. They have a $39.99 one which is comparable, perhaps even preferable, to the Pirate Lab $119.99 backpack.

I've tried all three bags (the $29.99 Amazon, $39.99 Amazon, and the $119.99 Pirate Lab) and honestly I probably prefer the $39.99 Amazon bag to the other two, even before taking price into consideration.

The $29.99 Amazon bag is too small for my needs so I immediately dismissed it. The Pirate Lab bag's back compartment does not fit a very large binder and I'm not a huge fan of how the front pockets are organized. It gets bulky if you put stuff in the front pockets, and the items tend not to stay in place. On the other hand, the $39.99 Amazon bag has a larger back compartment which fits thicker binders (such as my 2" zippered portfolio) and I like the organization of the front pockets better. As for the main interior compartment, the Pirate Lab bag holds slightly more than the $39.99 Amazon bag, but I also have issues with the dividers of the Pirate Lab bag. I can't get a divider to stay in place with my Ultimate Guard 160+ Twin Flip n' Tray, as the divider isn't wide enough to adhere to the long divider and side of the bag, also the velcro on the long dividers is really poor with the Pirate Lab bag. The smaller dividers only stick to the sides of the bag but not to the long dividers. With the $39.99 Amazon bag, I can attach two dividers and situate them such that they nest the Flip n' Tray in place, which I have not been able to do with the Pirate Lab bag.

I admittedly do use the Pirate Lab bag over the others, mainly due to sunk cost effect (since I spent $120 on it, I really want to use it or I feel like I wasted that money). And it does have some advantages over the $39.99 Amazon bag. The main compartment is larger, the construction and materials is a little better (the velcro strips on the Amazon bag are not as securely attached to the dividers and can peel off), it has an additional pocket in the main compartment for binders and such, and it has two proper external side pockets for playmats/water bottles, whereas the $39.99 Amazon bag has a side pocket with a flap and straps above it (for a tripod, playmat, or water bottle) and the other side is a flapped pocket with no straps above it. The flapped pocket might be preferably to others, but I usually bring two large water bottles with me to tournaments so I prefer being able to carry both bottles on the outside of my backpack (as opposed to the inside where it could get my Magic stuff wet). I ended up just taking a knife to the flap of the pocket of the $39.99 bag such that I can more securely fit a water bottle in it, and thus two water bottles over all - so not a huge deal.

So, tl;dr - I think the $39.99, and not the $29.99, AmazonBasics DSLR bag is actually the best value for an MTG backpack. It's at least comparable to the $119.99 Pirate Lab bag, and probably better than the Ultra Pro bags and other similar bags. I haven't touched an Ammonite so I cannot comment on this bag, but I can't imagine the Ammonite is so much so better than the AmazonBasics to warrant paying basically 4x as much.

Honestly, if you want a backpack to last and want a certain look/design, I suggest investing a little bit so that you won't run into the problem of anything ripping and getting damaged so easily in the future.

I had a Jansport Baughman Backpack a few years ago and it wasn't stiff but it just didn't hold the weight nicely when I used it around campus.

I then switched to the Northface Recon which really helped carry around a lot of stuff that a typical student uses like a water bottle (I had a Hydroflask), laptop, chargers, notebooks, lab coat, etc. Even though it can seem stiff at first, it just needs to be broken down a bit and it distributes the weight evenly when worn all day. I liked how much stuff I can fit into it and how durable it is. I bought mine for about $80 but I've seen them go for $60 at other places. It just depends on where you find it.

Upon entering my last year of college, I wanted to gift myself another backpack since I wanted something a little smaller but still hold a lot of things. I got the Herschel Nova Backpack and although it may look small, it holds a ton of stuff since it has a structured but flexible shape. I also really enjoyed the color of it and it doesn't feel like I'm carrying a huge load on my back.

I felt that each backpack has a different use which I find helpful. I also was deciding between a Fjallraven Kanen backpack since they also hold a lot of stuff and they last a long time too. There's also an Amazon Basics Backpack which seems to be at a fairly low price. This Jansport Hatchet Backpack also seems to have a nice structure and doesn't seem bulky.

If you go to outlet stores you can most likely find some pretty decently priced backpacks that are good quality as well. I know Colombia may be expensive online but at an outlet store there are some good deals there.

This is my current bag for getting around the city.

I just recently moved to Brooklyn and felt like the old Jansport I had wasn’t comfortable to wear and carry for hours at a time. It had the space and organizational features I needed for the most part, but it just wasn’t that comfortable when I was wearing it for hours at a time, even when it was adjusted properly.

I bought this on a whim because it was cheap and smaller. It fits everything I need (a full change of clothes including shoes) with room to spare in case I pick something up while I’m out. The organization in the front pocket is great.

The charging port is actually far more useful than I thought it would be. It’s got a specific pocket to hold a portable charger that the cable routs into perfectly. I’ve actually found myself regularly using it (although I now wish it was USB-C PD compatible since I just upgraded all of my charging devices this week).

I don’t currently need to carry my laptop with me, but it fits my 15” MacBook Pro with my thick wool sheath case and has great padding for protection.

For a cheap backpack, I’d definitely recommend it.

I’ll be moving to a new position soon where I might need to travel the city with more organization and if I find this to be lacking, I’ll probably move over to this, which has great reviews.

You could go for this one. It's called the ebags professional slim. I've had it for almost 6 months now and I have no complaints. I have an 15 R3 but if fits very nicely with lots of room to spare! Even though it is a little expensive I honestly think it's worth every penny. its got lots of storage with organization options, a battery garage which you can remove to have even more room in the laptop compartment which is already really roomy, a padded laptop compartment which I really like, and it even has a spot for your mouse. It's also very stylish as well. It has a lot more to offer but the list would become too long lol.


One last thing that I want to mention is that I use this for college and it's honestly great. I know alienware's are on the heavier side of gaming laptops, but this backpack just makes it so comfy to carry around. I also use the backpack for college which I also have room for some folders, my sony headphones case, my textbooks, and all of my school supplies and a little more. also watch the video on their website if you can. $100 is a little bit low, but let me try to toss a couple recs your way! Definitely agree on the GR2 being a great pack.

The Timbuk2 Spire could be a decent option for you and it's about 75 bucks + 32L.

The Mammut Seon Cargo could be a good fit, and it's about 140 bucks & 35L.

I just recently downsized from my SwissGear Synergy after 10 years of service as a Network Engineer.

14" Laptop, assorted tools, cables, console adapters, iPad... all kinds of stuff.

Lifetime warranty.
I'd call it very water resistant, but not completely rain proof.

I wanted something smaller, and more I dunno, executive-looking I guess.
So I went with a Everki Studio
Which I like quite a bit. I'm still getting used to carrying less stuff around though.

Just about any quality laptop backpack will keep your stuff dry for a 5-10 minute run to your car.
If your walk is significantly longer than that, then please just slide a micro-umbrella into a side pocket of said backpack.
That's a much cheaper solution than searching for a truly water-proof bag.

In addition to Everki, don't ignore the more advanced LL Bean bags like the Turbo Transit

Yeah, I know LL Bean might have a middle-school or high-school image in your mind that you may want to avoid. But the quality of their construction, and the solid support from their lifetime warranty shouldn't be ignored.

So, this is a bit of a stupid and vague question but I figured I should ask anyway. I bought a backpack specifically for college since my old high school one was falling apart. It's nice and has a compartment for my laptop, a main compartment which I can fit about 4 notebooks into with room for a little agenda, and a front compartment that I've put a bunch of random stuff in (stuff like gum, Advil, hand sanitizer, writing utensils, and a portable battery).

My question: should I be expecting to carry way more stuff for my freshmen year of college? Should I opt for an even bigger backpack? This might depend on classes too. My girlfriend told me that I should've gotten a bigger backpack since my new one, with all the stuff I mentioned, is pretty full now, but she also said to at least use it for the first week before deciding to return it.

She has a point but I also wanted to point out that there's only one day a week where I have 3 classes. The other days, I usually have one or two classes that are pretty spaced out, so I could leave certain materials in my car and run to get them if I really needed too.

Light, super well organized, super well built. I use it day to day and also used it for a 2 day trip to NYC with no issues. I've sold three or four of these at my work to people who've seen it.

The "AC adapter garage" is worth it alone, but this backpack just feels great, is built great, and looks great.

You can see my current laptop, a 17" Sager. Next to it is my chromebook. Below that are my backpack which almost fits the Sager and the laptop bag that I adjusted to hold it (fits holds laptop, mouse, power brick, external drive, mouse, and tablet).
The two mice are a Zowie EC2-A and a Logitech M510. If you aren't an fps nut the cheap logitech is great and the wireless dongle fits in the mouse for transport, or can be left in the usb slot with a low profile. To the right of those are one of my external hard drives, wallet, and glasses case. The TV is 22 inches and not pictured is my wacom intuos pro medium tablet which fits perfectly on top of the Sager when I travel.

So here's what I've learned. 17 inch bags are pretty much limited to satchel style bags. Even my 15.4in bag is freaking huge on my back and I could fit all of the books I needed each day + 13 inch macbook pro in there comfortably. The 17in pc's were too much trouble to carry to/from classes, but the mbp was easy and the chromebook is so small/light I keep thinking I've lost it.

Despite being a pain, I would typically switch homes every few days and having a 17in laptop was pretty nice. I'd usually throw clothes + headset in my backpack and carry two bags wherever I was going. While cumbersome, I didn't mind carry the big laptops for lan parties or visiting friends for a night. It was mostly the school environment (switch classes, waiting around, lack of outlets, crowded table) where it got in the way.

I use it as a minimalistic camera bag and love it. If your looking for that type of thing. It's advertised as water resistant but I don't know how much I would trust it, seems like it would keep everything dry in the rain which is all you can really ask for $30. Great backpack though I'm loving it!

I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to get a wide angle lens and after looking it seems like canons 10-18 is a good choice, and they have that in a bundle that comes with the 50 f/1.8 as seen here, which seems like a good deal.

Adding two more lenses means my case is WAY too small and after reading through the megathread I found this amazon basics bag which seems more than large enough, non descript and at a very affordable price point.

I want a laptop backpack that can fit and protect my 17 inch laptop and other things well. I went expensive on the laptop and didn't get the warranty since it was stupidly priced ($700 for 2 years). So I want something that will protect it from most things.

I like this bag at the moment, but I was wondering if there's anything else you guys can recommend (max of $130). I'd preferably want a less expensive one, but if there's one just as expensive but better, please tell me. Also, some input on whether I should just go for the bag I'm looking at would be cool.

Ooh, backpacks. Your questions were terrible, but I left a lot of feedback in the open section. As a small woman with a large laptop finding the perfect backpack is impossible, so I'm always happy to see new options. My current one is holding out very well so I won't be in the market for a long time... unless someone comes out with the absolute perfect one and I happen to see it.

Also, the straps are a bit far apart for a woman's shoulders, but if you need it to fit a 17" laptop what can you do?
  
  Price is a consideration but I would be willing to pay around $200-250 for a backpack that hit all the tickmarks once my current one needs replacing.

Is has a padded compartment for your laptop. The middle compartment is perfect for a headset and ipad. There is a small padded zipper pocket ontop that will hold a stratus. It has these tall zipper side pockets that run basically the full height of the bag which are great for a fuel strainer, ipad mount, and a couple of screwdrivers. It also great organization for the little stuff. It is very rugged. I've had mine about 3 years and it still works perfectly. Highly recommend.

It’s not a sling-style, but this is the small backpack I use to carry my iPad. It looks great and is super slim. And the Grid-It system is perfect for holding wallet, keys, chargers, external batteries, and other small accessories.

First things that come to my mind:

1. This tripod is so absolutely fantastic, and cheap!
   
2. A fast lens or two. Either a zoom at f/2.8, or my suggestion would be a prime (50mm or 85mm -- or both) at f/1.4 or f/1.8. These primes will yield incredible results, and are reasonably priced.
   
3. A flash. Something that can be used off or on camera. Something you can slave/master would be best.
   
4. A polarizer for your best lens(es). Polarizers make a huge difference when taking landscape photos or photos with a lot of reflections.
   
5. One of these two backpacks could make being mobile so much easier! This one or this one. I have owned the first for a couple years now -- taken it all around the world, don't have a single complaint.

LOVE IT, Laptop and Rift with headphones and controller fit perfectly in it.

If you're putting it in your carry on rolling suitcase . . . just make sure to put the HMD in the middle of the suitcase and surround it with soft stuff.

Or better yet . . . just carry it in its box and put it under your seat on the airplane. I've traveled with HMDs (Including Hand-Built research grade ones) quite a bit and have had no issues with airport security.

This bag is pretty good. All Swiss travel backpacks are optimal for week stays at places imo.

I have a Dakine laptop backpack as well. I like the Dakine Terminal bag, but I much prefer this Thule model. I can fit more in it. I like the pocket layouts more on the Thule. It also has the nice 'crush-proof' pocket for sunglasses or whatever else you may like to put in there.

Its a bit bulky (like using a school backpack crammed with books), but it is AWESOME! The internal foam dividers are thick and sturdy. I really recommend it but even if you go with something else, make sure the foam dividers inside are sturdy, most backpacks come with really flimsy ones and then you got lenses and bodies bouncing around.

Looking for a backpack that’s professional enough for my nyc tech job, comfortable to wear, roomy enough for laptop, some stuff, change of gym clothes and lunch, but not necessarily gym shoes.

I'm in your league as a big guy but have more gear to store/lug. Most of my shooting is sports/action or nature/macro stuff with the occasional family portrait at holidays. I'm definitely an amateur. For most of my shooting, I rely on four basic styles of totes:

• I use a wrist strap. I don't own this particular one but something very similar. I don't much like neck straps - they're too loose when I'm moving to keep the camera secure and in the way when I'm not moving. When I first bought one of these, I was surprised at how often I used the plate/stand that attaches to the bottom of the camera.
  
• For a single camera with an everyday lens: DSLR holster I don't own this particular one but something very similar.
  
• For a little more gear but still small: DSLR gadget bag I own and use this bag.
  
• For a day spent shooting: DSLR backpack I own and use this bag.
  
  I've got a couple of cross body sling packs that I've never liked - they always seem to be in the way or bouncing around - so they've ended up stuffed in a corner somewhere or holding the small bits of loose camera crap that seems to accumulate like dust bunnies.
  
  When/if you get to the point that you're hauling lights &c around, I've found that most of the time a simple (and long/huge) duffel bag is the easiest solution.

I bought a Swiss Gear for this exact purpose. Not only is it perfect for this, it is also the best daily carry backpack I have ever owned. On a daily basis, I have my MBP 13", iPad Pro 10.5", and my Fujifilm XE-3 with two lenses. Each device basically has its own zipper compartment, which is super handy. It also has various smaller compartments for small tools, cables, chargers, pens, meds, food, etc.

The camera and the lenses I keep in a much smaller Timbuk2 shoulder bag that easily slides in and out of the main compartment. (I got this bag at an REI garage sale for cheap, so I couldn't find a link for the exact one) I don't know how big your camera is but if it is a similar size to mine, you will have no problem fitting other stuff into the main compartment as well. The benefit to this smaller bag is if I want to set my backpack down and walk somewhere else with just the camera, I will have everything I need to do so, including extra camera batteries and SD cards.

I highly recommend this bag.

So a full backpack I would recommend the Amazon Basics DSLR Bag. This is what I currently use and am very impressed with it. It's about the size of a full (stuffed) backpack and fits well on my back - can hold the tripod on the side as a double-buckle. And can easily store all of the rest of the stuff inside + a laptop (up to 17") in a secondary compartment. Also has waist straps if that's your thing.

I should also mention that without the tripod attached, this looks like a normal backpack - it doesn't scream "HEY LOOK I HAVE A CAMERA".

At $40, it's not a bad deal at all - I would however take the padding inside and flip it so the camera is up top and not at the bottom (in case you place the bag down roughly at any point).

When you read about people commenting on how solidly it's built they are not lying; this thing feels sturdy.

I have a Mancro backpack which is designed for 17 and under sized laptops and this pushes the limits of the laptop sleeve in it although it does fit easily. The power brick is no big deal either. Together on my back, the weight isn't bad at all.

I also purchased a Timbuk2 for my cousin's graduation gift and she loved it! I personally used the Recon throughout my college years but prefer the old model vs the newer one that came out about 2 years ago (I think). The newer model felt as if everything was way too compressed with very little space vs the old model had a lot of space to fit a laptop, notebooks, and two textbooks, no problem.

Check out xoticpc.com for a good variety of gaming laptops. 17" laptops get pretty heavy.. even 15.6" is quite a load - might want to consider getting something smaller instead of lugging it around to class all day. If you really want a bigger screen it might be worth it to buy a 22" or 24" monitor for $130-ish and keep it in your dorm/apartment and carry something more portable.

Also invest in a good laptop backpack. My backpack is easily 15 lbs with all the crap I carry and I can barely feel it.

The battery lasts like 30 min. on max power settings, lol. This is definitely more of a "desktop replacement" than a laptop.

At the time I bought it, it came with a backpack that fit it, but I hated it. Comparatively cheap, well built, tons of space. I can fit my 60d, about 5 lenses (primes and telephotos, it even fits my 300mm), 580ex, and my tripod straps to the side of the bag. I can also fit my Macbook and Wacom Bamboo in the back padded pocket. Really nice bag. The main thing I like about it is the sling system that allows you to quickly remove the camera, and you can even leave the lens attached.

I've got this one. It's pretty roomy, but super ugly and after two years it's starting to wear down a bit.

Something like this might be better suited for you, however.

Here you go. I have only filled it up, haven't really used it. Just got it today. It definitely holds a lot of stuff. I put a dice rolling tray in the laptop sleeve, but you could easily fit a binder in there. Could probably also fit a small binder in the front.

Good article. What about case/backpack? I picked a cheap Case Logic SLRC-206 but now that I carry 2 bodies, I am looking at the Tenba Shootout.

Body with a flip out screen is also a good call. When getting shots of bathrooms and small rooms, it is very helpful.

It is designed to fit into an overhead comparment and I have taken it on many flights. I've never used the weird unzip mechanism in a security line, but its a good bag.

Honestly the Amazon basics laptop backpack has been great for me. It’s sturdy and comfy as hell, has huge spaces inside and can be pulled smaller and side clipped if needs be. The netted pouches on the side did me a good turn for my coffee mug but did break after about a year and a bit.

I think it is very reasonable price wise too. Mine has lasted about 3 years for a variety of uses

I have both, the sleeve is great if all you need is the laptop and a few very small items. My current bag (which I absolutely love) is the AmazonBasics DSLR Bag. I've had it for over a year now and it's still in great condition, even after taking it for many hikes and beach trips. My only problem with it now is that I am running out of space as it is a kind of small bag.

Pros: Cheap, good camera and lens storage, has a tripod holder on the side, it's well organised

Cons: Small size, doesn't look that great.. Honestly, these are the only two cons I can think of, and they are both subjective.

Another +1 for the North Face Surge 2. Also in Scotland I hear you regarding the weather. I just got this to handle the waterproofing. Easy to use and packs up small when not in use.

I use my bag daily to carry laptop (Dell Precision M4600) plus tools and all my other gear for work, walking 4 miles each way. Bag handles the weight well and despite being heavy (due contents, bag itself is light) it is very comfortable. Loads of compartments to organise your gear too.

I looked all over at backpacks before settling on the Surge II. Other one which caught my eye was the Thule 32l Crossover but could not find an example in shop to view first hand.

I was initially sceptical about the Surge thinking it the best of a bad bunch however it has been rock solid and can't recommend it highly enough.

Depends of the requirements. Are we talking driving with a case in your car? Shipping? Taking to your local LGS?

There are some fairly cheap tool container cases that fit ~10 deck boxes and some soft camera bags/backpacks that can fit ~10 decks + a playmat + a tradebinder.

With your budget, you should just get the ASUS G750JZ. I own the version with the 780M and it's built with incredible quality and its cooling can't be beat.

Hi! Fellow rider here (car-less for five years!)


I use a standard backpack and a Kriega US-30 drypack on the fender rack. Neither of those are optimal for sorting and securing individual deck boxes, but the drypack will keep them safe from incidental rain if that's a concern.


As far as motorcycle-specific items go, if you're on a sport bike, the Dainese D-Mach might be worth looking at. I don't have any experience with it, but the hard shell and inside straps might be able to wrangle the deck boxes.


Outside of motorcycle gear the Professor has done some reviews on backpacks. There's an amazon camera bag that I've heard other mtg players using, but I don't know how well it rides.

I use this one to carry both laptop and VR equipment and it's awesome. You can even carry light stands for the lighthouses.

Always be careful with the lighthouses though, make sure they don't receive hits or the front is scratched.

Random booster products might be iffy for entrenched players, since they don't usually get them the cards they need (unless they are drafting with them). I would personally say get him some high-quality personalized accessories, such as trade-binders, sleeves, backpacks (such as the highly rated AmazonBasics), or deck boxes. If he likes commander, maybe get him some of the new precons. Maybe even just take him out for a day of MTG at your LGS, buy him lunch/drinks or something - I know I would love that.

If anyone is looking for alternatives, or if this product isn't available where you live, I strongly recommend this backpack from Amazon.

I bought one in November and it has exceeded my expectations. I rearranged the dividers and have 6 EDH decks, a modern deck with sideboard, a fatpack, a box for dice, and sleeves for drafting all in the main compartment. It's worth every penny.

It's not the sexiest looking camera bag, but it's dirt cheap, well built, and holds a lot. They have a slightly smaller version that's only about 27 bucks. I actually like that it's pretty anonymous and doesn't scream "expensive camera inside." In fact, I recently switched to an even more low profile setup, an old school Jansport backpack that I added some foam inserts to. If you stick with this hobby/profession, you will end up amassing an unreasonable number of bags fairly quickly ; )

I travel a lot for work so I just bought a second Xbox One to take with me on trips. This is the one I used, it will hold 3 binders in the back pocket, then it will hold 2(3 at a squeeze) Arkhive sized boxes in the middle pocket, in the front you can fit your dice, chargers, pens, notepad. It has a usb connector for a power supply if you want to charge your phone on the go. Legit Solid bag, also for security it also has the little zippers that allow you to lock the bag with a padlock.

I use one of these to carry all my stuff.

There's plenty of configurable room inside for tools, changers, batteries, props, a laptop, and anything else you might need to bring.

I know you were against putting the quad on the outside, but the tripod strap on the side will easily hold two 5" quads and it's pretty hard to put the bag down on it's side because of the somewhat flat bottom.

Build quality isn't bad at all either, when I grabbed mine it was only $30, so I'm not sure where the $40 current price is coming from, but this bag has held up to a decent bit of abuse and is easily worth it.

I've worked in admin at a large DC law firm for 5 years and I wouldn't see anything weird about that. The gap between attorneys and staff is pretty large. If you're still worried, just use a solid black laptop backpack that's clearly for work instead of something casual or sporty.

I recently bought this Swiss Gear backpack to carry my bulky 15" work laptop and also my 1.5L Camelbak Chute. The water bottle holders have an adjustable clasp which can hold pretty much any size bottle. This was the main selling point for me since I needed something to carry my large water bottle. With my water bottle, laptop, Tupperware for lunch, and charging cable, it still has room for other things. You shouldn't have an issue with storage.

Not sure about the BIFL status of it, but after purchasing, I've seen tons of other people with the same backpack at work. From the reviews, others have stated that it holds up well.

I use a variant of it for my own laptop - (while not a 17" beast it's going to be a lot more portable in something like that).

For the argument of mac to PC: buying a single MacBook Pro for college is expensive and can bring hassles, especially when you get into the software the college expects you to use. The college may expect you to use Microsoft Office for the most part and it can be used on Mac, but it's not as robust as on Windows. Some software is provided with the expectation that all students have Windows in some classes. Using Windows from within Mac OS will require software like VMWare Fusion VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop.

While Macs are less prone to getting viruses, they are definitely not exempt from all malicious software and unexpected issues.

You can get two good computers and have a lot more versatility with a Windows Desktop + Laptop.

If you're going to college, I dont recommend placing absolutely everything you do into a single machine that you take with you everywhere. College doesn't slow down while your computer is being fixed and they don't care that your data is lost if it was stored on one computer.

If it gets stolen, anything spilled on it, gets overheated in your bag, dropped, crushed or for whatever reason, you do not want all of your work to be on that one single laptop.

Buy a workstation for home use and then buy a decent laptop to take with you. I have gone through the research and put together a solution for both your production machine and your mobile laptop for a total of $1,668 (monitor, keyboard, mouse not included).

If you feel like building your own system, I came up with a build using an i7-6700 processor, a GTX 960 for some video power and not too over the top, 16GB memory, all for around $1150 from Newegg.

It has two 1TB hard drives. They can be set up as mirrored drives so you have your data and OS stored on both. If one goes bad, just take it out, use the good one and replace the bad drive, no data loss. You could add an SSD as well and still be under the $2,000 budget.

You can also just use one drive as the primary drive while Windows backs up your important data to the second hard drive with version history. If you deleted or edited a file, you can retrieve it from the other drive fairly easily.

I included a wireless card if you need wifi.

It's what I use for all of my EDH needs. The back flap is great for binder(s), front flap for life pads, pens, etc. Side pockets hold spare sleeves for rares or hard sleeves. Interior is padded and rearranges to accomodate multiple deckboxes easily. That side tripod holder? Put your mat tube there with a bit of e-tape around it to give it a stop that's not the cap.
