same issue was had for my 2013 escape. Tried to torque my lugs just to make sure they were tight before driving to the shop to have them take a look at some pretty minor alignment issues, when my Ford provided wrench slipped and destroyed each and every lug I even tried to get the wrench on.
After some research, I was pretty shocked and most definitely frustrated to find this is not unique to me.
Ford makes/uses absolute GARBAGE lugs for pretty much every model. Thanks Motorcraft!
After a lot of digging and research (I don't like to play guessing games with quality and compatibility, especially with auto parts), I found These
PS: when I say research, I mean literally finding blueprint schematics and measurements of lug design for the current Motorcraft lugs and taking measurements and molds of the lug space in the rim to compare to information available for accuracy's sake, and for reference when buying replacements. I did not skimp in the "time for complete and total accuracy" department.
Granted, they are 12x1.5, but the pitch is exact. I'd have to look if they also make a M14 that would fit yours. The reviews were on point for these and there is a lot to choose from. Yes, I was skeptical with the price being so affordable, but these have been on my Escape through the Florida weather that beat down all last year, as well as a full long summer's worth of Dallas heat. They still look and function flawlessly.
Still cannot fathom why Ford is using those garbage capped lugs. Advice to all Ford owners, 1st order of business when bringing home a new blue oval vehicle: BUY NEW LUGS.
Will report back with link to correct lugs for your situation, when time allows.
EDIT: check out These or These
Good Luck! Feel free to comment/PM with any questions or advice.
Again, these are my suggestions only from experience. I can't speak on any other products from this company, (aka: don't take this as a brand endorsement and roast me from anything DP makes that you make think sucks from experience) this is just the solution that worked best for me.
For that range on a stock vehicle, there's a few things I would recommend:
There's plenty more you could go with, but it's hard to know how far he's planning to take the car.
Good luck!
They look even better in person! I got a set of black McGard spline drive lugs along with wheel locks. Debated a while on Gorillas and Mutekis, but durability wise, McGard seemed to hold up better compared to the other brands.

Should probably mention that I only researched brands with locking lug nuts, just to help me sleep better at night.
I have a 2015 Touring. I added 30% tint on the front (which nicely matches the rear privacy glass), OEM window deflectors, Rokblokz mudflaps, JBR Rear sway bar and brackets (to reduce body roll in cornering), Fumoto Oil Valve - F-106N(for easier oil changes), McGard Spline Drive Lugs, and changed my wheels to Rays RE30s 18x7.5 +50 with Yokohama YK740 GTX 235 /60 R18 tires.
All these mods were easy to install, except for the RSB. That took a bit of time, but the install instructions are detailed and straight forward.
Happy modding!
I've only had them about 2 years, but as far as what they can take goes they've definitely proven themselves. I got them to ease swapping between street tires and racing tires for autocross and track days. Never had any issues at all that would lead me to think they need replacing. I can't imagine how they'd wear any more than factory equipped lug studs would. The only difference whatsoever with them is that they're threaded on vs pressed in. If they're threaded on with the proper torque and loc-tited there's absolutely no reason they'll come out short of maybe if you hammer off a nut that was cross-threaded and then torqued on way too hard. In that case it would be convenient that they come out since that stud would beed to be replaced anyway, no matter if it's OE or a conversion. Pretty much all teams that race BMWs convert to studs to make wheel changes easier. The guy at the tire shop that warned against them probably has seen too many Pep Boys specials roll through where the owner uses lousy parts and more importantly doesn't bother installing them right.
I have these studs in a different length and these nuts from Precision European Motorwerks. ECS Tuning tends to have great parts too though so I wouldn't think twice about using their kits.
Did your boyfriend post here a few days ago? If he didn't, then someone here came with exactly the same issue, in exactly the same state.

Multiple of us recommended just buying a tool to remove the wheel locks off. They're on Amazon, and if you're gentle about them you can return them and just say they didn't work. With prime you could've had them off by now, and your car fixed.

I get you, it's frustrating. But for the future, if your car has locking wheel nuts then make sure that they key is always returned back. I never leave a dealer without checking if I know the wheels have been off. I honestly don't see Kia paying for this, as it would be by word that the dealer lost your key. You are responsible after all.

This could've been solved, with a purchase on Amazon or another site in 2 days. Or you could've just found someone who works on wheels that was willing to come out and remove them. I'm sure even in remote upstate NY, you would've found someone.

Here's a few examples

I'm not sure that these are the exact same fit as yours but they aren't hard to find. A tire shop can probably help you. Those nuts can have better clearance for alloy wheels and maybe to help prevent theft. If you notice the first link has a review with a picture where it broke just like yours so maybe stay away from the first one. Read the description and look at close up pics to make sure you get the right one.

Go to Amazon and order this (I like Meg's products),
This should run you about $345 for everything and have you setup to take care of your car for a long time. You can find a 20% discount code online for harbor freight to bring the price down $55 for the DA. Go to home depot and buy a couple buckets and you will be good to go.
Edit: To add, I went to Lowes and bought a cheap inline sprayer for my hose and it works fine for foaming up the vehicle, plus it only costs $5.
Edit2: If you are going to downvote me please post why you don't like my recommendation.
Yeah those are a simple "security" lug style. When purchased they would have come with a socket or adapter to remove them. Scour the car top to bottom, if you're lucky its in there somewhere.
If you're unlucky you can get something like this or this, your local parts house might have something like them.
I can't take a picture of it, because it's deep inside the wheel. I've been trying to find it online, but the closest I could find was something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Automotive-84643N-System-Cragar/dp/B001O0GIQK?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Edit* Here is the best picture I could take. http://i.imgur.com/VuGAXYw.jpg
Snapped the original tool last week, so far I've bought 3 and none of them fit. I'm pretty sure the original lug bolt size is 17mm.
Link to the three keys I bought (if that helps.)
1, 2, 3
It looks like it is a splined locked lug nut. If you get a wrench/socket like this, you should be good to go. Just be sure to get the correct size, or get a multi pack.
OEM wheel locks will slow down your average, walking by thief, but the key can be had rather easily. Gorilla Automotive makes some decent ones that are slightly random where you need to call them with a serial number to get a replacement key for the locks. I don't know if they make ball seat locks for OEM Honda wheels, so you may need to get a special set of washers for them to fit correctly. https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Washer-Convert-Degree-Socket/dp/B00TAE27BC/
https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-M980-Emergency-Removal/dp/B000FTN3KK
28.99 on Amazon, for a set that will fit on most if not all common lock nuts. Round, square, doesn't matter. They have a tapered left hand thread on the inside that will just eat into the locking nut as you screw them on. All tire shops have those because owners lose their lock nut keys, plus they work on stripped nuts as well.
If they don't fit because of your rim, a few good blows with a sharp screwdriver or chisel and a hammer can probably loosen the locking nuts as well. The key shape on them actually helps to get good purchase with the chisel
Tldr: park near a tall curb
I went with these on recommendation from several people in this sub. They feel pretty high quality and look great with black wheels.
okay thanks so much for all the info. hard to find all this stuff when you don't have much hands on experience with it lol
so assuming the enkeis use a tapered seat if I went with this set of 12x1.5 lug nuts, the motorsport tech adapters, and then the enkei wheels themselves I should be good to go?
Got it. And yep, you'll just need thinner/'tuner' lugs for the wheels.
Lots of people (including myself) run Gorilla Lugs and have had good experiences. Of course any lugs a shop provides should do just fine as well.
Gorilla Automotive 21133BC Small Diameter Acorn Black 5 Lug Kit (12mm x 1.50 Thread Size) - Pack of 20 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001O0AMZS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7fajDbFTTNN40
I put these on my 2017 WK2 Trailhawk and they look great. If yours are conical shaped they should fit.
I spent a ton of time looking at different posts here when deciding on my wheel and tire setup, getting frustrated with pictures without details and second guessing if I had what needed. Just in case it helps someone like me in the future, here is a full linked list of everything I needed for the wheels:
>Black Rhino Boxers, 15x7, 5/100 bolt pattern
These are hard to link to a direct purchase, as stock always changes. I ended up buying them on eBay, as discount tire are dicks and wouldn't even sell me the wheels to take with me, as "there's no way that those will fit on your crosstrek". Wherever you find them, be careful as they come in a few different bolt patterns. You need 5x100.
> BFG ko2s 215/75r15.
>Hubcentric rings for the Black Rhino's through Subtle Solutions These are specifically for the boxers, you don't need them if you're getting the method mr502 which seem to be crazy popular here.
>Mcgard 12x1.25 tapered lugsThese will also work for the method mr502s if you're getting those.
That's it.
edit because I lied... I also got new tpms sensors, as I'm keeping my stock wheels to put winter tires on and don't want to have to go through resetting tpms sensors and having tires re-mounted every time.
> This set from tpms is clone-able and worked beautifully for me.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QHOOE6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have these and I have had good luck with them. The paint has held up to two seasonal wheel swaps and a round of balancing.
Good time for you to buy some locking lug nuts to keep those nice new wheels safe, like these: http://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Automotive-21133BC-Diameter-Thread/dp/B001O0AMZS/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1458856094&sr=1-1&keywords=gorilla+lug+nuts
While you probably can still remove them without the key, it won't be without some effort, and it's at least a bit more difficult to remove than the stock bolts.
You can easily bypass that with a breaker bar and a larger size socket than the locking lugnut. For the socket, you just have to find a size that makes an extremely snug fit when you hammer it on.
Also, I'm pretty sure thieves that are stealing entire sets of wheels from cars already bought quicker tools to bypass them, like master lug nut key sets that can be bought from your local auto store or Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/STEELMAN-78537-16-Piece-Locking-Master/dp/B00JF5F420) to remove them.
This is probably the easiest route. Well worth the money
https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-M980-Emergency-Removal/dp/B000FTN3KK
Get something like this, just hammer it on and then use impact Wrench. Very easy to use and at my shop i use it at least once a month.

Gorilla Automotive 21133BC Small Diameter Acorn Black 5 Lug Kit (12mm x 1.50 Thread Size) - Pack of 20
These are what I've got. Have been used on stock wheels and 3 other sets; been through 4 winters; seasonal tire changes; rotations every other oil change and they have held their finish great and have kept the wheels on the car.
I have these for my car, the matte black looks amazing with the matte black wheels.

Gorilla makes a good product as well but I don't think they make red.
Yes, there are plenty of posts on here about them. I preemptively bought these and they have been just fine: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O0AMZS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&sa-no-redirect=1
They should fit, but for that price you might as well get some 'aftermarket' ones.
These are the ones I use.

If you are just looking for spline drive lug nuts I recommend McGard. I had black ones and I found the finish kept it's dark black color a lot better than other tuner lugs.
You can also get wheel locks from McGard that weight the same.
Here is a kit with 16 lugs + 4 wheel locks though you probably only need 16 total.

Thanks! I've had no issues with white residue so far, but I always use it diluted never full strength on the interior.
The boars hair brush can be found here. The pic shows the old version of it, but when you buy it you get the new one like I have.
They might work, it depends on the wheels you got. When I got new wheels for my car, the stock lug nuts were too wide.
So i got these instead, and they look really good.

Valve stem should work just fine.
Those kind of look like spline drive lugs. If you get something like this, that should work I think.
Here are the ones I bought and they fit:

I think I just looked up the size of the stock ones and found some with matching thread dimensions.
You can try a lugnut removal tool like this:
http://amazon.com/Performance-Tool-M980-Emergency-Removal/dp/B000FTN3KK?sa-no-redirect=1
> I tried your 2nd link, https://www.ebay.com/itm/163194228589, meh... not so impressed. The seller sent me a 2nd bottle after I showed him how dark it was compared to stock. The 2nd bottle was a bit better, but not by much.
Thanks! That's exactly the input I was looking for. The eBay seller actually also replied to me overnight with the following
>To be honest we are not too sure on the US Spec models.
I did do some research and found out that even though the US and Euro Rado Grays were supposed to be the same, they may have been slightly different since its allegedly a very hard color to mix. Also found the paint code for Rado Gray, but I can only find one reference to it anywhere on the web, and it happens to be Color N Drive (same kit as the Amazon link in my OP). I may actually give that one a try. Will report back if I decide to do it.
As for lug nuts, I am planning on ditching the OEM ones. Currently I'm using the set that came with my steelies from Tire Rack and just got this set of black Gorilla lug nuts for when I go back to summers.
Reposting what I said further down :)
I bought these off amazon based on comments.

Or you can order a master key set from Amazon and say F U to anybody who has one.

I’ve had them since January 2018 (According to my amazon page)
I don’t know if it’s a solid piece or a cap, but the way it’s splined, you don’t get the sheering of the bolt that the OEM ones do.
I haven’t had any issues or warping with mine either, and I take my wheels off often enough rotating them and such.
There are all kinds of kits like https://smile.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-M980-Emergency-Removal/dp/B000FTN3KK/ to remove them. The lock will be destroyed, but if you don't have the key, shouldn't be a problem.
those are aftermarket lug nuts. you need a tuner lug nut key to take those off. the key looks like this:

there are different styles, sizes etc.

lug pattern is 5 x 100

My point was more along these lines
Gorilla spline socket. If I was a professional wheel thief I'd definitely have one in my toolbox. Amazon sells them too. http://www.amazon.com/POINT-SPLINE-TUNER-LUG-NUT/dp/B006UH66R8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452819298&sr=8-1&keywords=gorilla+spline+socket

These might work for you. They basically have threads which cut into the outside of the nut to remove it.
If they don't work, you can always drill out the stud. It sucks, and takes forever, but it works without damaging your wheel.
Those wheel locks are almost useless.
https://www.amazon.com/STEELMAN-78537-16-Piece-Locking-Master/dp/B00JF5F420
Or if they really don't give a crap, they'll just bang an oversized socked on it.
Hate to bust your bubble, but those are just simple tuner lugs. They all have the same key patter, so anyone who wanted to could buy This could get them off in 2mins.
You give him $0, and tell him about Performance Tool M980 Emergency Lug Nut Removal Set
Yup, this is what I bought after my jeep was stolen, and I haven't had a problem since.
Couldn't get them mounted today (they have Dz102 with a 205/50/15 on them as of today)
Stock Lug nuts wouldn't fit with them on so i bought some of these to see if I can get them mounted Thursday!
