Thanks /u/lamic

I looked through your post and recommendations, it looks awesome! I know I really should wait for the Hero5 but I'm not sure if I can wait.

I started to put a list of things I want/need into a spreadsheet, to start looking at Price. I have Amazon Prime so I'm thinking about ordering everything through Amazon.

Can you take a quick look through my list and see if everything checks out and if I missed anything for "Basic" operations? Then could you make any more recommendations, or let me know what my next purchases should be?

  • GoPro HERO4 SILVER- $338

  • Memory Card Lexar 64GB- $35, Looks like the cheapest one between Sandisk Extreme and Lexar, Lexar currently is the cheapest on Amazon

  • Batteries - Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)- $22, Read a few reviews and people said they like these batteries a lot. Should give me enough juice and let me know how long I can record with, until I'm completely dead.

  • Protection Lens - $7 I really just need to lens protector, in the reviews people are saying some parts don’t fit the Hero4 only the Hero3. Or should I put the $20 version off the actual GoPro site?

  • GoPro The Tool$4, Like you requested and reading some comments it looks like it would be worth it.

  • A basic Card Reader - $7, did a quick google search on best card readers this one popped up for best for it’s price.

  • SANDMARC® Pole - $40, Looked up some reviews and people tend to like this one. It seems like is always recommended to have some kind of stick or holdable mount to start off with. Also could you go into a little more detail about mounting the GoPro?

  • Pelican Case -$25 I like the idea of it being waterproof and I like to be organized with my stuff. So this looks like a perfect fit. And it will be an awesome case to travel with.

  • Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion - $35 I was watching some videos and it seems like this could be a cool little gadget to have. I would mostly use it for “mobile uploads to Hard Drives”. Working in IT I know how important it is to have backups, and this will let me get around bringing a laptop to the resort and other stuff. This is the video I’m referring too that shows you how to upload to a HD with out a computer.

So with everything in my cart I’m sitting at $488 which is with in my budget.

I’m still reading about the remote. That might be something we add down the line. I think I’ll be pretty content with just my phone app or getting the “waterproof touch screen” case cover too.

Do you think this is a good setup? Will this get me going? Do you have any recommendations, or anything that I should add or not buy yet?
u/Drybones5 · 11 pointsr/Android

I see a lot of confusing answers so I wanted to put mine in that are detailed and explain complicated sections.

>[1] How can I change the text vibrate, I don't see anything that lets me do it.

Go to the message app. Press the menu button > Settings. Go down to Notifications and there is a vibrate option or it should. I'm using a custom rom with stock Android so it's hard for me to remember.

>[2] Is there any way to show notifications, texts, and emails from the lockscreen (rather than just the bubbles that show up)?

The notification bar is accessible from the lockscreen. This is possible from ICS and forward. As for displaying texts and emails in the lockscreen like in text, that would require a custom app or lockscreen. The notification bar works well for it anyways.

>[3] What exactly can I do with a bootloader or ROM? I know they can customize stuff, but what exactly can they do? Keep in mind I am coming from an iPhone, so the most I know of is jailbreaking.

Unlocking the bootloader is not needed on most phones and when you do it you most likely won't know you're doing it. A ROM is the phone's operating system. on http://forum.xda-developers.com/ you can go to your Galaxy S III model [http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php?tab=top] MAKE SURE TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT MODEL. There is a difference between Galaxy S III International, Korea, verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Click on the Android original Development for that phone section.

Rooting your phone is what we call our jailbreaking, but default system access to our phones are still much higher than iOS. Rooting the Galaxy S III is really easy.

Putting a custom ROM on is harder but still simple to do. The instructions for the XDA threads are easy to follow and I promise your Galaxy S III will not brick. It's very hard to do so messing around with ROMs is easy, safe, and enjoyable.

IF YOU HAVE A QUALCOMM BASED GALAXY S III (North American) get this awesome tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665

This has a semi graphical user interface for you to use to automatically root the phone, put clockwork mod recovery on it, and put busybox on the device to prepare it for putting your custom ROM on from a stock device.

Clockwork mod recovery is the tool you will use to install your ROMs. It's accessed by booting up into it from the phone being off. holding the volume up and down plus power button for the Galaxy S III takes you into it.

To recover from a failed install or your phone is not booting right, you can flash the phone with odin, which you'll find the the XDA guide thread in the forum. You put your phone into download mode by a few ways. physically by pressing volume down, home button, and power button (I think), via a command sent from your computer in adb, or use a jig [http://www.amazon.com/SainSonic-Dongle-Samsung-Captivate-Vibrant/dp/B0053H73JQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347595972&sr=8-1&keywords=Samsung+jig] I recommend you get one of these for the future.

To flash a ROM make sure you do the following. Root the phone, install clockwork mod recovery. Boot into clockwork mod recovery and do a nandroid backup. This is in the backup section and it will do a 100% backup of your phone's operating system and apps. Now move the ROM zip to the phone's storage and boot up into clockwork mod again and go to install, choose a zip, use the up and down volume keys to navigate btw, and use the power button to select the item you're on. Find the file and install it like that. Some roms have custom install directions.

Cyangenmod 10 is a good rom to start out on. Safe, reliable, Cool, and easy to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778270 THAT LINK IS FOR THE ATT GALAXY S III ONLY. Find your CM10 rom for your GS III version.

>[4] What is Kies? Is that needed? Is it comparable to what iTunes did for the iPhone?

Kies is just an updating tool for the stock rom. But it also provides the necessary drivers for the phone for you to connect your phone and do things to it via the computer.

>[5] When I am texting, the texts come out of order, because my phone is one minute off from the other person. So I send something and the text they send ends up before it. How can I fix this?

I don't think there is a fix for this because the time stamp is from their phone and the message will organize it self by went created. The person who is texting you needs to fix their phone's time.

>I hope this helps a lot, if you have more questions feel free to contact me.

I carry a bag/purse/murse/whatever to hold the stuff in the second pic.

From left to right

First photo:

1: 5$ amazon flashlight. For something this cheap and good, its a steal.

2: Trusty gerber knife. I know there is some gerber hate round these parts but I got this knife about 7 years ago and its still going strong. You can see that I get it sharpened and it sees its use. This is not an aesthetic designer piece. This is a "I cut shit up" piece.

Second Photo(contents of my man bag):

1: Kindle. 80 bucks, endless enjoyment. Ive read the entire Dresden Files series, and a couple dozen other books on this puppy. The side buttons really are a great feature.

2: Car/House/Store keys + Kingston Data Traveler 32gig Flash Drive Smaller than my pinky and its very durable due to the construction.

3: Some random hair gel I got from a beauty supply. Love the product tho. Cost me like 3 bucks.

4: Deodorant.

5: Suave Dry Shampoo. Very handy when your hair is all oily. Cheap as well.

6: Benadryl

7: Target Wallet. I actually lost one similar to it, drove to every target within 15 miles and none of them had it. Finally ordered it online. Yes I liked the design that much :)

8: Sunglasses Case

9: Kirkland Moist Flushable Wipes. These things a fucking great. Face oily? Wipes. Sweaty and feel icky? Wipes. In a bathroom somewhere and their tp is sandpaper? Wipes. srsly.

10: Sunglasses

11: Galaxy Nexus with extended battery + seido active case.

12: YSL Babydoll perfume: Smells great, and isnt overpowering.

13: My savior in a pill: Allergy Meds.

14: A microsoft branded grid-it like thing I got at a thrift store for a dollar. Currently holding a tube of itch ointment, a pen, hair bands, hair clips, tweezers, and lip balm.

u/ForlornPenguin · 6 pointsr/originalxbox

First of all, before anything else, the single most important thing to take care of is to identify which revision your Xbox is. If it is not a v1.6/v1.6b, you MUST open it and remove the clock capacitor IMMEDIATELY! If you don't, it will destroy the motherboard.

Now, onto your questions:

    1. It will not affect the BIOS, but it does install new files to the HDD. Mainly, the new dashboard.
    1. Yes. In fact, it is incredibly important that you do so because the DVD drives are very, very old and are failing. Try to preserve it by using it as little as possible and play everything from the HDD instead.
    1. Modded or not, you can always swap it with another Xbox drive, but when it comes to using PC DVD drives, it's generally not possible, though there are some units that can be modified to work with the Xbox. But like I said, generally speaking, no, it has to be another Xbox drive.
    1. Never seen one, but you can easily use a flash drive with the Xbox via a USB to Xbox adapter. The Xbox can't work with any flash drives that are over 4GB and the vast majority of them won't work at all. This one is confirmed to work though.
    1. There are no drawbacks and the benefits are many. You can run homebrew applications, you can rip games to the HDD and can upgrade the HDD to up to 2TB, you can get all of the old Xbox Live DLC, you can mod games, you can play emulators, the region lock will be disabled so that you can play import games, you can null the EEPROM's HDD key, making it easier to save the Xbox if something ever happens to the HDD, etc., etc.
    1. It's basically impossible for a softmod installation to go wrong. You have to be intentionally trying really hard to screw it up in order for it to screw up. You can potentially mess it up afterwards though, if you don't know what you're doing, but that's part of why nulling the EEPROM is a very good idea, as it will make it easier to fix the problem. Once the softmod is installed though, yes you can extract all of your game saves for safe keeping on your PC, or wherever else you'd want to keep them.

Make sure you softmod with JCRocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool though. Stay away from all the older softmods that you'll see being used in YouTube tutorials and the like. This one has a way more straightforward installation procedure and is much better overall. Plus it has a much cleaner look and is still regularly updated. Once you have installed this softmod, run the included NKpatcher Settings application and null your EEPROM's HDD key.

If your Xbox is a 1.0-1.5, you should also upgrade to a hardmod, by doing a TSOP flash, which will replace the original BIOS with a much better one, making the Xbox even better than it is with just a softmod.

> The 6P is missing wireless charging

I'd bother with it if it charged anywhere close to fast charging speeds, and the heat output wasn't so ludicrously high even on high quality ones. It just ends up killing the battery faster.

> bezels are larger on it than the Nexus 6.

As pretty as they looked, I hated the Nexus 6's bezels. Personally, I look for functionality over looks, and functionally speaking, tiny bezels are atrocious for big hands like mine. As you can appreciate on this graphic, mobile devices have what's called an ergonomic thumb zone where it's most comfortable to use, and the smaller the bezels, the bigger the uncomfortable lower thumb zone will be. Not to mention smaller bezels make holding the phone sideways for movies/games a lot harder. Overall, Having the Nexus 6 made me finally understand why the iPhone hasn't decreased upper and lower bezels size. From an ergonomics and functionality standpoint, smaller bezels make no sense, regardless of your opinion on this.

> Don't buy cheap micro sd cards then.

If I'll be spending that kind of money, I'd buy the 128-256gb models which have plenty of storage already.

> Again OTG cable is a compromise.

Who said anything about a cable?. Also, I find it way more practical and fast to plug and play multiple OTG storage drives for on the go big-file transportation, than having just one SD card.

> There's no serious impact on battery life over 2 years when using a wireless charger.

Your anecdotal means little to me. I prefer solid evidence from reviews where heat is clearly generated, and where heat is well known to be the #1 battery killer on the long term, and that's backed by plenty of scientific studies. That you don't notice battery duration shortening doesn't really concern me.

> In my opinion Samsung is doing a much better job offering the things users want over Google.

I'd agree, if Samsung actually started working on stopping the Touchwiz bog down over time. I had a Note 5 with the Grace UX update and it's still the same since the KitKat/Lollipop Touchwiz era on my Note 4. Runs like a champ for the first month or 2, expect Moto G levels of performance after the 3rd month. Not to mention that even out of the box, it's clear that for a $600 Samsung flagship, you are still getting embarassing levels of real world performance

I guess what I'm trying to say, is to each their own. Pick whatever's important to you, and just ignore what everyone says since why should anyone else decide what you should like, but you? For me, the 6P was the perfect handset (coming from a huge variety of devices like the LG G3, X2, N6 & Note 5), but if the Nexus 5 or S7 suits your needs, then by all means please keep using that. But r/Android is a place for discussion is it not? It's what makes the community great :) Have a great day!

Kingston DTSE9 - Small little metal 16GB USB drive that's meant to go on your keys. I've had mine for 3 years and I love it. It's gets this really nice beaten-up, stonewashed finish after rubbing on your keys for awhile. You can see how small it is on my keys here.

Fenix E12 - Compact single AA flashlight that is a great size for putting in your pocket/bag. I have the previous model, the E11, and I love it. Fairly bright for a single AA.

Leatherman Bit Set - I just recently bought this for myself, and it's amazing. I have a Leatherman Wave and a Skeletool CX which use Leatherman bits; some of the lower end Leathermans don't use these. This comes with torx, phillips, flat, hex, and small eyeglass bits.

Solar Panel Cell Phone Charger - I keep this exact model in my backpack with a 6" USB cable. It's basically just a small solar panel with a USB port. Really nice build quality for the price, and it works great. It can charge my phone twice without needing to be charged via computer or sunlight.

I think all of this is under $80 cumulatively.

u/ChadeauxTech · 7 pointsr/windows

It sounds like you're confused about a couple things and it doesn't sound like you're ready to build a PC. If you buy a PC, whether you buy it off the shelf at a computer store or have one shipped to you, it will come with Windows preinstalled and the Windows license will be part of the overall cost.

Windows 10 1903 is only 3.7GB. At 4.8GB, 1809 was too big for DVD-R/DVD+R discs. 1803 and 1903 are both small enough to burn to DVD. No, you do not need to buy a USB drive. However, Windows will install faster from a USB 3.x flash drive than a DVD-ROM. I recommend either the 32GB Samsung BAR for $10 or the 128GB model for $25. You don't even need 32GB, but the 128GB model is 50% faster. That might be important to you. I have the 32GB model, of the old style (they changed the appearance slightly) and Windows installation is like 20 minutes, and that's to a slow laptop hard drive.

But you're asking about paying, and I suspect you're not talking about USB hardware, but your Windows license. You can install the Windows ISO via direct download or an ISO burned to DVD or extracted to USB, and everything will go fine, but without a license, you won't be able to change the wallpaper (background will be black) and it will constantly notify/nag you about it. So that puts you in license violation, but your computer will still run and Microsoft won't bill you. (A nonzero number of people just deal with that.) To be compliant with Microsoft licensing, you can click the notification and it will help you buy a Windows license. You can do it right through the Windows Store, which would be the easiest way. (You can also use the Windows Store to buy your way from Home to Pro.) You can buy a physical copy at Best Buy or a similar store and input the code where instructed.

Happy to help with any other questions. I'll be here for the next hour or so.

u/archover · 1 pointr/archlinux

When you can, this $5 drive might be a good investment. :-) If you lived nearby, I would give you one.

I keep the install image on a flash drive all the time, for rescue purposes.

Once you have some experience, read install from existing linux which for me was helpful in many ways.

Good luck and welcome.

u/insomniac_koala · 1 pointr/techsupport

Could you recommend me a small flash drive that's pretty fast and tiny or are those the best I can get? I might just get the 128gb version of my old drive haha. Would this be even faster than the other two? And is this about as good? I don't need to have a 3.1 port in my PC to be able to sustain those speeds, do I?

u/shakenbak3 · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

As a 6P owner, I'ma little biased but all that put aside, I came from a Note 3 so I had the same gripes as you: No expandable storage, no removable battery, etc...Here my solutions to those problems. For the most part the 6P battery will get me through a day of heavy use pretty easily (listening to spotify, watching videos, texting, emailing and whatnot). Just in case I always carry around a portable power bank. As for expandable storage, I would like to point out with Google's photo app, you receive unlimted storage for high quality photos, however, don't quote me on this, but at some point I believe past 1080P it starts to eat into a 10GB limit. I advise using a USB stick for external storage, it's small, portable, and overall very convenient. Best of luck making your decision! It's a tough one! If you have any questions about the 6P just let me know!

Edit: If you are strictly looking just to offload files to get more storage and not transfer them to a computer via usb, this Dongle gives you more storage and it costs less than the previous link. If you do want to move pictures and videos, you can always buy an adapter.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/france

Merci encore ♥

How to upgrade your Mid-2012 15-Inch MacBook Pro

Step 1 - Backup your files
For me this took the longest, I'm not the most organized person. I also saved my keychain, apple mail logins, stickeys, etc. I was in the middle of projects that I needed to jump right back into after the upgrade.

Step 2 - Create a macOS installer on the USB drive
    Follow this ---> https://9to5mac.com/2018/10/22/how-to-create-macos-mojave-usb-installer-easy-video/

Step 3 - Plug the new harddrive in via Sata cable usb
This is where my first issue came into play. I skipped ahead and swapped out my harddrives only to try and boot up and my system not recognize the new SSD. I first thought I purchased a dud. The truth is you need to format the new drive for the computer to see it. Plug in the new SSD and follow these instructions to erase and format. I chose Mac OS Extended (journaled) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496

NOTE::: you dont have to use the usb drive, you can install the new SSD first if you want and format from the bootable USB.

Step 4 - Install the new SSD
    Follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfiGF_pjqvM

When installed, hold Option on your keyboard and then turn on. Select the USB macOS installer and follow instructions. Install onto the new SSD. Should take 20-30 min

    Step 5 - The Battery

Follow the instructions in the videos on this page: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/BAP15MBU78W/#owctabs
Make sure you set aside some time to do this. The install is very fast however its the calibration that takes some time. After you install your new battery, turn the computer on to test, there should be a little charge in it. Shut your computer down and then plug in. Let it fully charge, the light on plug should turn green. Then leave it for another 2 hours. Turn the computer on, unplug, turn all power settings off (follow video) and let the computer run until the battery is completely dead. Then wait a number of hours. This will calibrate your battery with your system.

Then plug in and enjoy your new laptop!

I've had a Samsung BAR 128 on my keychain for three years. Works great. Write speeds can be a little erratic but usually 30-60 mb/s. Much faster than any other inexpensive flash drives I've owned.

They've since updated it with the Bar Plus with USB 3.1. It looks like the write speeds are down to less than 40 now from people who've tested it. Reads are still crazy fast.

At 22 bucks for 128 and all metal waterproof shockproof design it's a decent option. There's probably stuff with better write speeds, but you're going to have to get that M.2 enclosure setup for anything really really good.

I used to love my WD Passport, until it died. Realized I was better off with something that let me use whatever storage media I wanted. Best of all, this thing lets me one-button back up the SD card to attached USB storage. With a low-profile 256gb thumb drive (eg) permanently slotted into the USB port, the whole thing becomes a shockproof (kinda) waterproof one-touch backup system.

Okay, to start with, don't panic! This can be fixed, everything is going to be fine. You can find some relatively simple instructions for using ODIN to flash your note back to stock here, download links are on that page for the stock rom, ODIN, etc. You already have KIES installed I assume, as you attempted to flash the update, so you should already have the appropriate USB drivers installed.
If you can't get the phone to accept the download, or be detected, from that droid screen, you may need a JIG (Really, any owner of a samsung android phone should have one regardless.. just in case). If you're in the US or Canada, you can get one quickly from amazon here. Just plug the JIG into the phone's USB port while it is powered off, and it should cause the phone to boot to download mode. From there, you can flash with ODIN.

Once your phone is returned to stock, you can attempt the update again. Good luck!

Does it look like this? Does it have an ethernet port in the back? If so, it's a slim. However, I think some newer models may not support FMCB. You can just pirate the Nexus copy, I don't think anyone realistically cares. With that being said, once you get back to your PS2, if you will any time soon, then I can tell you how to get FMCB and the like.

You may want two memory cards for this, though. Or one large memory card. FMCB installs on your memory card and it's a huge file in comparison to most standard memory cards.

With that being said, it may be a pain to set up, but every single Armored Core game in Gens 1-3 other than Formula Front is supported flawlessly (as far as I've seen) via OPL (Open PS2 Loader) and POPSTARTER. Loading times might be a bit shorter or longer, but I've never had any sort of jarring gameplay issues that may be present on emulator.

If you're wondering any of the costs:

  1. If you need memory cards: Link - $13

  2. Cheap USB Thumb Drive Link - $5

  3. Swap Magic: Link $25

If you already have a cheap thumb drive lying around as well as spare memory cards, you only need to pay 25 bucks. You can use this to get cfw on your PS2 and then you can use a SAMBA connection to play your PS2 games. You can trust me on this as I'm not only a moderator of this subreddit, but also a moderator of /r/PS2, /r/PS3Hacks, /r/PS3Homebrew, /r/PS4Homebrew, and the PlayStation Homebrew discord server. I'm open and willing to help anyone on this.

Hahaha, glad I could help, I love my Leathermans and I'm sure you would too, and I second the Tasman salt and hawkbill advice you got from ninjamike808 (or any Spyderco for that matter).

Do look into some SAK models as GL1207 says, maybe you can find something that fits your needs even better.

As for the Corsair Survivor, I'll drop my experience with flash drives: Yes it's awesome and your info will be completely safe, but think about the bulkiness not only in your pocket/lanyard, but also when plugging it into a desktop computer or laptop. Something of that size does get in the way, blocking ports or making you angle or tilt the PC in a weird way to get it plugged in, so just think about it.

Another option is something along the lines of a Kingston DataTraveler, or the LaCie Key series (although those are more expensive), but as you said, that is your preference, and you make your EDC, so rock it the way you like it.

u/GuardiansBeer · 2 pointsr/TeslaLounge

I was in the same boat. Here were my considerations...

  • Fast write-speeds: to capture continuous video write to the disk
  • Large Capacity and inexpensive stick: fewer read/write per sector makes it more reliable/longer lasting
  • Large and expensive SSD)
  • Endurance/commercial type for more read/write cycles and hotter/colder temps
  • Small form factor: not so big/rigid to avoid possibility of breaking while in tight area
  • WiFi capability: to get the data on/off without physical transfer

and what i ended up deciding...

Based on the feedback so far, I'm leaning toward the Sandisk Ultra Fit.

In order of importance, my decision factors...

  • The small form factor will reduce the chance of me hitting it accidentally and possibly breaking the port.

  • It is fairly cheap at $19 for 64GB version. This allows me to store at least 1 day of video at least 2000 miles of driving (over a month of driving) and reduce the number of re-writes.

  • The write-speed is not a factor, but USB 3.0 should be more future proof if Tesla changes the system, or if i re-purpose the drive to another task. If you want the older version with 2.0, it is even less expensive.

  • Endurance doesn't seem to be a popular concern, so ignoring it for now. I am slightly concerned with operating temperature [32°F to 113°F (0°C to 45°C)] and storage temp [14°F to 158°F (-10°C to 70°C)], but we'll see how it goes this winter. Those more further north than me can report in if they have success or failure.

  • I also ignored the WiFi capability because if i need to unplug the device, there is no reason to use it. I'm still curious if SD based cards like the Toshiba Flash Air W-04 would have a different behavior. I bought one for my digital camera, so i'll give it a try in the Tesla too. The cost is significantly higher, but if i can access dash cam videos from my cell phone and before getting home and without unplugging, that would be a big plus. (also need to find the right SD to USB adapter.)

Thanks for helping me think it out.

If your computer has a tiny slot, then you can put a microSD card in there. You can get a card like this for around $20 at Best Buy and other tech stores. You can move your files into the microSD as opposed to on your main drive, saving space.

If your computer has a larger slot about the size of your thumb, you can get an SD card. Some microSD cards have SD card adapters, which you can tell by the packaging. If you use Amazon, this $20 128 gigabyte card from Samsung and this $10 64 gigabyte card from Silicon Power would both do the trick. If none such a port exists, I recommend this $18 128 gigabyte flash drive from SanDisk.

Also, if you could tell me the model number (usually located on the back of the computer labeled under "model", or in Control Panel along with RAM), then I'd be able to help you more.

Man,

I've been searching (not very well apparently..) for a cheaper version of the Orbitkey for so long!

I bought the key organizer last night and received it this after noon! For your comments about retightening it, I'll see what will happen but you might want to try a drop of blue loctite or even the pink one.

For the USB, I had a Kingston data traveler 64g laying around a the office. It works well with the key organizer ( an pretty cheap too)https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00SOL9Z1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yep, I have had one on my keychain for four years, and it still looks in pretty good shape, and works perfectly. Here it is

The only reason I would upgrade at this point would be to get the newer model which is USB 3.0 (10x faster read/write). But for oddball installers/tools/and work related files it comes in really handy.

Judging from pictures tho, i dont think any protective case is good with OTG flash drives (example www.amzn.com/B010HWCEHM/ ), what would you recommend if i intend to use theese often? I went with;

and have had no issues;

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7Q41PM/

It has the additional benefit of being small, so it is hard to see down in the compartment with the USB ports. I just marked the top with a silver sharpie and insert it by feel as necessary.

You will need to format it FAT32 (3rd party programs are available free to do this), and you will have to create a "TeslaCam" folder on the drive before you insert it.

Found this on Amazon, it doesn't list the GN specifically but from what I've heard it should work. Samsung has this functionality on pretty much all of their smart phones to allow their service people to reset bricked phones.

That said, I haven't used one, but if you pull the battery and plug it in then replace the battery, it should put you into download mode and allow you to re-install stock image. If that doesn't work, it will definitely need a factory repair because there is most likely a hardware problem.

Please be careful of temperature tolerances. I bring this up every time someone posts a drive suggestion thread so I'll paste in my usual response:

Be careful with the temperature tolerances of the drives you use if you live in a market with seasons. I looked at the T5 but nyxed it when I saw it's only rated for 5-35 degrees C (41-95F). In Chicago we regularly get well above and below those temps in a car. Cabin overheat won't even kick in yet at 95.
I switched to the Samsung Fit Plus 256gb when I went through 2 other drives last year (polar vortex and one of the drives being a T5) and hazarded a guess that it was too cold and killing the drives. -25°C to 85°C operating limits on this drive (-13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit). No issues since. Drive capacity is less but now with the self erasing in v10 I don't have to pop it out and erase once a month. Muuuuuch better temp tolerances and physically much smaller drive is nice as it isn't hanging from a cable in the front compartment.

If you care about your data, you should figure out a backup solution. I would suggest a small personal NAS, something like this WD 4TB My Cloud Home Duo Personal Cloud Storage - Dual Drive - WDBMUT0040JWT-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076DV59ZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KwBKAbWN0Z4CS

There is a single drive version, which would be ok, if you duplicate your data on your PC, to maintain redundancy.

Otherwise, here is a SanDisk 128gb flash drive for less than $30 SanDisk Cruzer 128GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ36-128G-B35) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TKFCYP0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EABKAb4BPK80Y

I have a Samsung Fascinate and am very happy with it. Its free with most contracts or upgrades. The rooting community for it is amazing. It is also "unbrickable" that is to say the worst thing that could happen if you root it is you have to buy this $10 plug to reset it (from an unwritable chunk of memory). http://www.amazon.com/SainSonic-Dongle-Samsung-Captivate-Vibrant/dp/B0053H73JQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330881727&sr=8-1

My critique of your question.

Your hardware options are wide open. Anything that will support AMD-V or VT-d (no need for VT-x) will work. Some will say 8GB of ram is ok, I'd recommend 16GB to give yourself breathing room.

If you want to be lazy a Dell PowerEdge T110 II will fit your needs. Processor details. By lazy I mean not worrying too much about hardware details and focusing on setting up a backup solution, XBMC (Kodi), Lychee. I highly recommend booting whatever OS for virtualization off of USB to separate your hypervisor from your VM data. This way if the hypervisor takes a shit (it shouldn't) your VMs are safe. In your case it allows you to rebuild the RAID array without worrying about losing your host configuration settings.

Expect this to take you longer than 10 days, the time between now and christmas, unless you can dedicate all your time to the project.

u/fuzzyspudkiss · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

So first of all, not all USB 3.0 sticks actually run at 3.0 speeds. There are many variants out there that will run at standard or even low end usb 2.0 speeds but will be "USB 3.0" because they are compatible. Look for reviews for the sticks and tested speeds (not just what the manufacturer lists). Anything above 150 MB/s should be fine as its pretty much only going to affect loading times.

I just did a quick search for a drive and something like this should work really well. I'm not a fan of the micro USB sticks for constant read/writes, I've not had much luck with them on my NAS/Firewalls/ESXI boxes as OS disks.

u/seymourputts · 2 pointsr/originalxbox

They say that, but I'd ask a worker at an alternate branch or send a couple test drives anyway. I've received multiple SD cards and flash drives in padded envelopes from as far away as Hong Kong delivered via USPS, and they have received nary a scratch.

There are metal flash drives (I have one of these myself) which are pretty resistant to moderate crushing/bending forces and are pretty cheap.

u/zakabog · 7 pointsr/pcmasterrace

That'll cost you $50 for USB or $30 for a SATA SSD.

I have dozens of drives I've collected over the years, but with storage being so cheap it's easier to transfer your data to a new device rather than rely on a drive so near the end of it's life. Keep the old drive in a bin if you want to keep it for the lulz, but I wouldn't actually use it in my build.

The computer with the best memory used during WWII (that I could find after just a few minutes of searching) was the Collossus, with around 6kB of data. The Z3 is the largest German computer and is just a little bit behind, but still rounds out to around 6kB. Here is an image of it next to a human:
http://www.rtd-net.de/Z3.html

Assuming the human is 6' tall, the computer has approximate dimensions: 6' x 6' (there are two cabinets) x 1'.

If we stack the computers so they are flat against each other (the closest linear packing we can achieve) we get 20,000 miles / 1' = 106 million Zune Z3 databanks. This works out to approximate 600 gigabytes of data. This would fit in the horribly expensive, one terrabyte Kingston Datatraveler:
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-Predator-1TB-DTHXP30/dp/B00E65QM8O

So... yes.

UNLESS we can put computers side-by-side. (20,000 miles is a unit of length, not volume). This Scientific American article puts the human brain data storage at approximately 2.5 petabytes (2*10^15 bytes):
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-the-memory-capacity/?page=1

If we put the Zune Z3 databanks in 4000 "columns" (for a total width of 4.6 miles) we can fit 2.5 petabytes, which is significantly more than any modern flash drive.

In fact, storing the 2.5 petabytes on a single system would require the 20 pB Titan supercomputer that debuted 2 years ago:
http://www.cnet.com/pictures/titan-supercomputer-debuts-with-20-petabyte-performance-pictures/

TL;DR: Yes if it is a single file column of machines, no if you actually have enough machines to store a human brain (which is 4.6 miles wide x 20,000 miles long).

If you are worried about space, get the 32GB and then buy a separate OTG adapter. Something like the Sandisk Ultra 32GB/64GB OTG adapter or one that uses MicroSD cards like the Dash Micro. I myself use the Patriot Stellar Lite 32GB. Has a Micro USB for connecting to my Note 5 and a normal USB for connection to my computer. I feel like I've mentioned these quite a lot lately lol. Guess it's because most people don't realize you can still have more storage without a MicroSD card slot (although not a permanent replacement).

I used to have the client's provide the hard drive, but I started to feel that wasn't very professional so I started providing it now and just upped my total price. If it's only 128gb then I buy this for $20 and the 256gb are about $40. Since the usb is really small I attach this wooden piece to it with a nice knot. Then you could deliver it in a box like this. The boxes I use say "Our Wedding" on them and have little white paper shreds holding the usb up. I then put some business cards beneath the box and tie a ribbon around the whole thing.

I just bought the male C to female A adapter from the google store ($13) since i want my drives to work on all my devices since i mostly use a flash drive to offload TWRP and titanium backups for safe storage should i need them later on, or i have to wipe my phone. i have a 64GB drive that i also mirror on my network storage because multiple backups is always a good idea, so i need it to work on my main computer and not just my phone.

edit - Just looked again and sandisk now makes a USB C male + USB A Male drive way too expensive $40 for a 32GB model though. must have come out recently, i looked specifically for this not long ago. hope they do a 128GB model for a reasonable price soon.

Pretty new to EDC but figured you guys would be interested in a few things I carry, which I haven't seen here in my short time browsing.

  • Folding one-foot ruler with leather case (you'd be surprised how much I use it)
  • Antique Anheuser-Busch matchsafe (also called Vesta Case)
  • Timex Miliatary Watch
  • Will Leather Wallet
  • Vintage (B+L) Ray-Ban Sunglasses
  • Kingston DataTraveler USB Drive
  • iPhone 5
  • Vespa and house keys (looking to make these slimmer)
u/BlueSwordM · 1 pointr/WiiHacks

I would recommend any USB drive that has the normal thumb drive size, has a USB 3.0 interface, is formatted to FAT32, and comes from a reputable company like Sandisk and Samsung.

Here's one with a metal casing for good heatsinking:

I'm using this to download movies on my phone and watch them on my TV:

https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-32GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B010HWCEHM

I'm pretty sure you can watch the movies directly from the USB stick and not copying them to the quest, and it's very light so you can simply keep it plugged and watch your stuff. I would choose this over any other solution tbh.

Gamecube is easy to load from SD with USB Loader GX.

I think you can check into WiiFlow about loading wii games from SD. I am pretty sure USB Loader GX can't load WII from sd cards. It doesnt work for me anyways.

I am loading my wii games from USB stick. Even an 8gb usb will work but you have to load 1 game at a time.

You could probably load 2 regular size wii games on that stick its 4$ skip lunch or a couple energy drinks. or 1 coffee or something.

u/GoTeamScotch · 27 pointsr/originalxbox

Memory cards are basically regular USB flash drives in a special case with a special connector. If you pop one open and remove the 8MB flash drive, you can put in a replacement drive that is (much) larger. Drives up to 4GB are supported.

I used a SanDisk Cruzer Blade 4GB USB Flash Drive.

Once the drive is in, you can use the stock Xbox dashboard to format it. This works on stock (unmodded) Xboxes too.

u/smackythefrog · 2 pointsr/mac

Is this slim enough for you?

Seems like they're not at the point of being a slim and neat as legacy port drives, but it seems close enough and has support for both C and A type USBs.

u/Scottap · 1 pointr/chromeos

Welp, I was wrong. Established brands haven't built a low(er)-profile USB-C drive, this and this other one is as small as it gets. Whenever a smaller one comes I can let you know, though.

I still think you should buy an USB Drive, it's the best perfomance for the money, you would only need to be more careful when using your CB+, if you're so scared of using a USB drive (although as of today, USB slots are strong as hell)

u/JeromeZilcher · 2 pointsr/lgv20

So you are connecting your V20 over USB-C to your laptop using PDAnet+, right? So you got a working internet connection on the PC, right? (This is what I am sometimes doing when working while travelling by bus or train).

So now the UTP/ethernet port of your laptop needs to start acting as a router? Is that where you are stuck?

If so, try googling "internet connection sharing windows 7" or "(...) windows 10", depending on your situation.

I have managed to do something like this (but different), in companion with this (now discontinued) device:

    My situation was different, though:

  • (Paid) camping wifi connection to the laptop for internet access
  • Set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the UTP/RJ-45 port of the laptop
  • Attach with CAT-5 patch cable to the Kingston
  • The Kingston would act as a Wifi access point for the various phones and tablets that we were using (this way we did not have to buy Wifi internet access for each single device)

You may not need something like the Kingston, though, because the PS4 has its own UTP/RJ-45 port. You may need a crossover cable, though.
u/el_charlie · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

You can get the 16GB model and also get a dual usb 3.0 - usb type C flash drive. I bought one from kingston and all the reviews says that works fine on the 5X and 6P.

This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010HWCEHM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1451313197&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=kingston+dual+c&dpPl=1&dpID=3169jdBPvQL&ref=plSrch

There's a 64GB model, too.

I do have a 32GB Nexus 5X because my Nexus 4 had 16GB. I didn't have problems with 16GB but I want to be future proof. Besides, the 12.3 MP photos are bigger now. I still have a lot of free space, even with my Titanium backups, tho.

u/KungFuHamster · 1 pointr/buildapc

A nice fast 3GB/s NVMe SSD would be six times faster than a SATA SSD. I'd recommend at least 1TB; 2TB for room to grow. It will give the most immediate and thorough performance gains. Unfortunately to get the most out of it, it'll have to be the system drive, which means a reinstall of the system.

Get a Windows 10 Pro key from eBay from a good seller with 99/100% feedback and lots of sales for like $5.

Buy a 300MB/s 64GB flash drive from Amazon for $15: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4

Set up the flash drive with Windows 10 Pro: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Disconnect the old drives and hook up the new NVMe drive by itself. Install Windows 10 Pro. With the fast flash drive and NVMe system drive, it'll take like 5 minutes to go from booting the install to the desktop. It's so fast.

Once it's installed, shut down and hook the old drives back up again to copy over what he needs, but they'll be very slowwww compared to the new drive. Use the old drive(s) for backups or cold storage.

Download http://enbdev.com/download_mod_reallife.html v0.290, and then get my preset on http://www.nexusmods.com/reallife/. Put all replacement .ini files into a new loadorder, and place it on a 1tb flash drive. I recommend this one, but you might be tighter and that drive is pretty chunky. Then shove it up your ass and your all set.

I'm guessing you don't have to have a totally clear drive. I've always used an empty drive, but I have tried it with multiple BIOS versions on the drive at once, and I was able to select in the BIOS which file to flash. As long as the BIOS file is in the root directory of the drive I believe it should be detected.

That's assuming the USB drive is FAT32 formatted. If it's something like NTFS or exFAT then I doubt it would work.

Edit: You could also get a cheap USB drive just for stuff like this; 16GB for $3.99 at Amazon.

u/lexxmasta · 2 pointsr/ouya

While I completely agree with you that there needs to be expandable storage, there is a fix around this now that all modern phones have usb host mode and otg cables are available. I just use my standard flash drives that I carry around and a small otg cable.

They also sell otg flashdrives now like this one which has both a standard and micro USB adapter built in that you can just plug directly into your phone.

I always enjoyed this way of putting it:
>The iPhone 6 uses an Apple-designed 64 bit Cortex A8 ARM architecture composed of approximately 1.6 billion transistors. It operates at 1.4 GHZ and can process instructions at a rate of approximately 1.2 instructions every cycle in each of its 2 cores. That’s 3.36 billion instructions per second. Put simply, the iPhone 6’s clock is 32,600 times faster than the best Apollo era computers and could perform instructions 120,000,000 times faster. You wouldn’t be wrong in saying an iPhone could be used to guide 120,000,000 Apollo era spacecraft to the moon, all at the same time.

You could, technically, take the amount of computing power in an iPhone 6, and send 120,000,000 Apollo 11s to the moon. 120 MILLION.

Here's another. This is a picture from 1956 of a 5-megabyte hard drive being brought out of a plane.

Sixty years later, here's the biggest consumer-available USB drive, which is 200,000 times bigger in storage size. It just blows me away.

To expand on that:

2TB portable external HDD: $70

1TB portable external SSD: $310 - $397

The Amazon result was the only I could find that was selling a 1TB flash drive (ebay has them too, but ebay also has a lot of fakes); which I believe had a starting price of 700 dollars when it was first released. But given that nobody seems to sell them anymore, it seems this Amazon retailer decided to jack up the price.

You can also pay $2.99 a month for 200GB of storage on Google Drive and keep everything uploaded there. Or you can store your photos and videos on Google Photos for free and access it from wherever.

If you're looking for a good price on a large flash drive, this 128 GB metal (gunmetal or silver) Samsung drive is only $28 right now (Amazon prices fluctuate quickly):

Get a wireless media hub. Something like this RAVPower or Kingston will let you have 'unlimited' storage for your device on the go.

Um, looks a tad small to be packing any reasonable amount of storage. Unless you want to shell out for something like this, it's not going to be very pocketable.

For $915 each, you could get [1 TB flash drives] (http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-Predator-1TB-DTHXP30/dp/B00E65QM8O). I would assume that you could fit at least 20 of these in the space of 1 4 TB 3.5" hard drive. That would mean you could get 20 683 TB, or 13.660 Petabytes. Now, the latency would be terrible with a tesla as the google fiber would transfer at the speed of light in glass, which is [about 200,000 km/s] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light). Distance from NY to LA is 2776 mi according to google maps which is 3663 km. 3663 km / 200,000 km/s = 0.018 seconds to transfer one bit. So for the tesla, you get a latency of 41 hours but a data transfer rate of 13.66PB 10^6 GB/(41h*3600s) = 92.55 GB/s. Google fiber has a latency of 0.018 s but a data transfer rate of 1GB/s. So, you would get a 92.55 times greater data rate with the tesla, but if you decided you had to change your data, it would take a long time to turn your tesla around.

Been on my wish list for a long time, only 32GB though.

This is the line I am using. Just be sure to get whichever size you want (minimum 4GB) and that you'll need two. I went with one 4GB for the temp and 32GB for the permanent.

I'd get a sandisk flash drive. Something like this 16gb flash drive

> So it's basicly a USB with like 4GB that shows up as 2TB?

Exactly.

> Also, was wondering, in current day is it possible to get an actual 2TB USB stick that size, not a portable HDD.

We're close. Kingston has a 1TB drive. https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-Predator-1TB-DTHXP30/dp/B00E65QM8O

I use the Kingston MobileLite G2 with my iPad for that exact thing. Looks like they are up to a G4 now.

u/SomeRandomMax · 1 pointr/Nexus6P

I just tried to find it again, and it looks like I may have seen a MicroUSB one, not USB C. The equivalent SanDisk USB C looks to be more expensive for a smaller size.

Like almost everything else in the world, it's available on Amazon

I got my classic last week and bought this USB stick: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-128GB-Flash-SDCZ36-128G-B35/dp/B00TKFCYP0

I have not tried the hack, but the PlayStation Classic powers it when playing. It’s just a regular Cruzer not one of the other kinds, so hopefully the same rule applies

Yep, I found a 256GB thumb drive for $55 and now I’m Sentry’ing all the time (except in my garage).

Try the Kingston Mobile Companion creates a wifi network and you can slot and sd card in and attach a usb drive so you can use your iPhone or iPad to copy files between the sd card and sub drive or into your idevice Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion (Extra Storage, Battery Charger and More) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KU2E9IW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_UECGwbBPJ8JZV

Looking for people to stand by the road to hold closing signs.

The Shopko in my town closed about a week ago and it was a wild ride of a shit-show. They hired a company to assist them in the closure, and the first thing that they did was jack up all of the prices. On much of the merchandise, you could see the original price under the cheap-ass tags that they used. For instance, they had all computer memory (CD's, flash drives, etc.) 50% off, but the 128gb SanDisk flash drive they had had a pre-sale price of $79.99. Post-sale, I would pay $40, but I can get the same drive on Amazon for half that.

Well, I'm on a mac so using Disc Doctor I have formatted in Fat and ExFat and neither works. It's this stick

u/recycledciv · 2 pointsr/photography

Found this one on Amazon. Appears to work as a wireless NAS. There's also this Kingston model.

It took a bit of digging, but I managed to find it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cryptex-Round-Lock-Flash-Drive/dp/B01F44IZ3U - 32 GB, USB 3.0, $55 USD.

u/city312 · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

Format the drive to FAT not ExFAT

Go with this one because I’ve had no issues what so ever: Samsung MUF-64AB/AM FIT Plus 64GB... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

The advantage with Android is that you can use one of the small external pen drives with micro USB port or use an OTG cable to attach a regular pen drive.

> Besides which, I'd have to fill out paperwork to get work to buy me another USB stick

for $30, it's worth buying a new one.

u/fictionthatspulp · 10 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Hopefully you didn't spend much OP. There is no such thing as a 2tb flash drive. Kingston currently makes a 1tb flash drive which costs ~900 USD but it looks gooooooood. A simple google search will tell you that sandisk doesn't make a flash drive of that size. It'll fill up way before that 100gb mark. I'd say around 8-32gb.

CES 2016 starts on Tuesday, I think you can expect announcements of a wide range of USB-C peripherals.

Not sure who uses MP3 players anymore, but phones are starting to adopt it. And there are already tons of thumb drives available.

I think I can beat you

I didn't buy one (yet), but I really want to.

u/bugwug · 2 pointsr/newzealand

Sure looks like a scam. The biggest flash drive I found on Amazon is 1TB from Kingston selling for US$879

u/Spexor · 0 pointsr/PlaystationClassic

From everything I've read USB 3.0 is fine if you stay under 64gb. I followed a guide online and grabbed this one. I used a guide I found online and it worked for me.

USB Type C to USB A Female

or

USB Type C + Type A USB Drive, 128GB

I was going to type 'or PXE' but then I realized, I have no idea if Macbooks support PXE booting.
