You need a new motherboard if you want to upgrade your CPU to an i7-9700K or an i9-9900K.
The i7-6700K you have is basically the best CPU you use on your current motherboard, besides the i7-7700K which is basically the same thing but clocked a bit higher.


On the topic of bottlenecks, it depends on the games you're playing and the frame rates you're targeting.
Usually, if you're targeting frame rates above 60 FPS you're more likely to run into CPU limitations depending on how CPU intensive the game is. What games do you play, and are there any other games you're looking to play in the future? Perhaps an upcoming release?


To find out if you're CPU or GPU limited you can use MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner Statistics Server's On-Screen Display to help you find out what's limiting you. Usually if your GPU usage displays that it is around 95-99% then you're GPU limited, this can mean that your CPU isn't limiting your performance. Another way of finding out if you're GPU limited is by reducing the rendering resolution and checking to see if your frame rate has increased. Doing both of these can be helpful as I've noticed higher frame rates from reducing the rendering resolution even when my GPU usage is in the 90% range.


On the topic of future proofing, we're on the verge of a new console generation, with the PlayStation 5 scheduled to launch around this time next year. To be honest, now would be an arguably bad time to upgrade if future proofing is your main objective. The new consoles are going to shake up the gaming industry and set a new benchmark of console hardware that will have an impact on how games are developed for PCs and Consoles for years to come. It would be best to upgrade after we have full information about the specs, or after the consoles launch if you want to be on the safe side.


If you really want an upgrade now, my recommendation would be to buy what you need. From the use cases you mentioned in your post, it sounds like a RTX 2070 Super would be a great GPU for you to use. It's not as expensive as the RTX 2080 and above but it offers a sizable amount of its performance for the price. The RTX 2070 Super has 8GB of VRAM and performs close to the GTX 1080 Ti. To my knowledge the closest thing to a GTX 980 Ti would be a GTX 1070. In Digital Foundry's Review of the RTX 2070 and 2060 Super GPUs, the RTX 2070 Super has performance gains of around 50% over the GTX 1070 at 1440p resolutions.

As of now, we're aware that the next generation consoles are allegedly going to have hardware ray tracing capabilities, how this will fair against the ray tracing capabilities of NVIDIA GPUs is unknown at this point in time.
The PlayStation 5 is going to feature a Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, how much of this will be available for developers to use is uncertain at this point in time, but this is a colossal leap over the CPUs the current generation machines will have. The PS4 and Xbox One have access to 6-7 cores out of their 8 Jaguar cores, so I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar take place.


We don't know what clock speed these CPUs will run at but I speculate that they will have clock speeds of around 2.7-3.2GHz due to power, thermal and yield limitations. But we don't know for certain until it is confirmed.


In anticipation of the next console generation, you may want a CPU that will match or exceed the consoles if that is of your concern.
With Zen 2, AMD has pretty much caught up to Intel's current architecture, however Intel do still have advantages in clock speeds and gaming workloads depending on the CPU, but this will be the closest consoles have been to PCs in a long time if they have CPUs that are clocked at 2.7GHz and above.


Hyper threading (SMT) has proven to be beneficial in the past on CPUs with 4 cores, I recall people saying that i7s were arguably useless for gaming compared to i5s (both were 4 core CPUs) but this has proven to be false as the years went on and the CPUs were utilized more. This was beneficial for those that held onto their CPUs for many years. I don't know whether this will happen again with the i7-9700K and i9-9900K, however it seems there are some advantages to the i9-9900K in gaming workloads in Digital Foundry's look at the CPU in this review: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X vs Core i9 9900K
But this is currently mainly dependent on the user pushing frame rates well over 144 fps, possibly targeting 240HZ refresh rates but who knows how this may change in the future?

The case from Amazon is great for the money but I like the Dell case best because when you fold it under the back and basically use the tablet upside down, the viewing angle is just right. The Fintie one is cheap and it feels like it but the Dell case is certainly over priced, problem is that it works best for me so far.

If you want a great keyboard, look at the Microsoft Wedge, it's small but useable and the cover can be used as a stand for any tablet.

The Microsoft Wedge mouse is a great armchair mouse and has 4 way touch scrolling. It may look tiny and awkward to use but it's really pretty slick, especially to toss in a bag and go.

Boy do I have good news for you. I just went through all of this and got myself set up.

First off, try a trackball mouse. It keeps you from having to move your shoulder so you don’t crack or dislocate it while playing. Personally, I use my thumb and index finger on the ball because it eliminates most of the problems with shaking fingers moving the pointer. This is the mouse I use. It is nice because above the ball there is a DPI switch you to change the sensitivity (is moving the ball one inch moves the cursor three inches or one half inch) which is nice for shaky hands that need to hit something precise. This model is much cheaper, and I used one forever before I bought this new one.

Then I bought a separate keypad for assigning spells/attacks. It is curved and keeps your left hand at a more natural angle, and for me dramatically reduced the number of duplicate and unintended key presses. I map arrow keys to my thumb, jump under my thumb, tab above my thumb, and shift to the bottom left corner. Unless you talk a lot in chat, you’ll never need to take your hand off of it. It also has multiple “layers” through the software, so, for me, my #1 layer is modifier keys and Numbers 1-0. My #2 layer is chat emotes and system keys (escape, etc.). If you play retail, you can also bind system macros to it, that go beyond what wow normally allows (tab target tab target tab target... for hunting rares). This is the new model of what I use. There is an older version as well, but for the meager price difference you’re better with the new one.

I know that’s a lot of money to invest for WoW, but it’s really more “general computer use”. I have all my major macros (cut and paste, etc) assigned to a third layer on that keypad, and the trackball mouse is what allows me to use the computer at all.

Make sure you get a wired mouse that is comfortable for you. There is no need to spend more than $50 unless you want programmable macros and bloatware. DPI, in general, is a marketing gimmick and doesn't really affect the performance of the mouse a whole lot. It's about consistent tracking and how it feels in your hand.

  That being said if you have a wired mouse that you're comfortable using right now, stick with it. No reason to change what works.
  
  Don't overlook a decent mouse pad. Whichever mouse you buy, there is likely an inexpensive soft pad ($20 or under) that will work with it. Get one. It will give you a consistent tracking surface. SteelSeries and Xtrac both make pretty nice soft pads. Hard pads are more expensive and generally have a narrower range of compatibility, so check before you buy to see if it works with your mouse.
  
  Play on a medium/low sensitivity. Start by bottoming out your sensitivity, then slowly move it up until you can move comfortably. Do not start from the top and work your way down. You will be moving your mouse more, but you will be more accurate and consistent in your mouse movement in the long-run.
  
  I also highly suggest you use raw mouse input in-game if you are not already. Mouse acceleration is baaaaad for developing consistent movement/accuracy. If you don't trust the game to do it for you (or you play other FPS games that do not support raw mouse input), check out this fix to remove all mouse acceleration in Windows 7.
  
  FPS shouldn't affect your accuracy too much as long as it's consistent. Play some TDM if you want to get used to just running around aiming and shooting, then move back to conquest/rush once you're comfortable. You'll get better with time ;)

Edit:

-It has two thumb buttons which can be programmed for in game commands with no extra software.

-battery life is great. Mine has been on the same AA battery for the last 3 months.

-The buttons are very, very clicky. It's like the mouse version of a cherry mx blue keyboard. Some might find this annoying, but if you like that kind of audible and tactile feedback, then it's a great choice.

I'm looking for a mouse recommendation under the following parameters:

Price: absolute max of $55 but ideally more like $40.

I have more of a palm grip. I play mostly FPS and I also use it to work.

I have average size hands but tend to not like small mice very much.

I don't particularly care about having a lot of programmable buttons. Wireless is cool but I don't need it. I'd rather have a better sensor.

I'd like a mouse that doesn't look like it was designed by a 9 year-old who likes spaceships (nothing against those who do).

My options right now are Mionix Naos 3200, Steelseries Rival 300 or Logitech G402, which are about the same price right now. I also saw the G303 on sale at Best Buy but I'm worried that it is a bit small for my taste. I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Any recommendations?

I'm not saying that. I've spent a fair amount of money over the years buying different mice for different reasons, looking for a "perfect" mouse. In fact, I think that the two most important factors when considering a mouse are comfort and the use case. No point in having the best mouse in the world if it gives you cramps, but also no point in having a comfortable as heck mouse if it means you have to resort to weird tricks because the mouse lacks features.

Personally, I use a velcro cable tie on all of my mice so that there is no excess. I also plug my mice into the USB hub on my monitor, so there's very little cable drag. If I was bothered by what little is left, I would opt for a mouse bungee in a heart beat. Paying 20-30€ for a mouse bungee and getting to use it with any mouse I want is a far better option for my at home use case than paying 100€+ for an entirely new mouse.

In addition to some of the other excellent suggestions, I found that the following helped me a lot as well:

1. Buy a vertical mouse. (I used this one for a while: http://amzn.to/16jPgP1) This helped me A LOT with wrist strain.
   
2. Use a white-on-black (or similar) color scheme for your editor/Word processor. It's much easier on the eyes.
   
3. Likewise, make your font size as big as you can bear.
   
4. Turn down your monitor brightness as far as is comfortable. In my experience, most monitors are so bright by default it feels like you might as well be staring into a light-bulb all day.

Mouse bungee's are amazing, they work perfectly for me and I play much better with it since it reduces the cable drag.

Zowie camade is probably one of the most popular mouse bungee's. I personally use it and the build quality is pretty good,Razer bungee and Hotline games bungee are some other popular ones.

Pretty sure they all work the same.

If you can stretch a few quid more, the Mionix Naos 3200 is £33 on Amazon (the laser 8200 model is £2 cheaper but - meh, laser).

I have the Naos 7000 optical as my main PC mouse for gaming and general use, and have just purchased the 3200 optical linked here as a mouse for the office. The only difference is max DPI. The Naos is a great mouse if you like this shape, very comfortable, well built, nicely weighted, good customisation with the optional software, braided cable.

I am not a fan of Antec and I have had more than a few blow out on me back in the day. I understand that a lot of people are Antec fans and that the Green series is popular because of the units good performance.

But 380watts just seems low. Regardless if it is within spec of your system. It's always good to have a little overhead for future expansion needs. Also a PSU working at 80% vs. 40% is putting a lot more strain on the unit.

The keyboard is no thrills. Feel free to spend more if you desire. It is cheap and will likely feel cheap... but work.

That mouse seems like the cheapest "gaming" mouse on the UK Amazon site. Should do you well. Is leagues above the mouse in your quote above. Could always go with a G500, G700, Microsoft mouse etc. depending on your budget. Put more importance on the mouse over the keyboard. Don't go too cheap on the mouse!

Lastly, see if you can afford to bump up that 550 ti to a 560 ti. The 384 core version is a good buy at £155.98.

This uses a custom cooling loop, it is not very hard to make since I used soft tubing, but if you don't want to use that, you can get 2 of THIS or THIS GPU and THIS CPU Cooler and just remove all the Custom Loop parts.

For the main monitor, I chose a 4K 144Hz monitor and 2 secondary 1440p 165Hz monitors which can also be used for gaming or can be used when you stream.

For the CPU I chose a 14 core i9 CPU, which has the best balance of cores and clock speed of the i9 CPUs, you could get more cores but the clock speed will drop a lot and so will your gaming performance.

Does $500 include the monitor, keyboard and mouse?


For mounting your MacBook Pro properly to desk, you have 3 real options depending on if you want to be able to work from it (unlikely) or just have it closed in clamshell mode and use an external keyboard and mouse to mount vertically to save desk space.

Next is an external keyboard, I'm going to stick with an Apple aesthetic for this recommendation and not any gamery mechanical ones. Depending on if you want a numeric keypad or not, there's either Apple's Magic Keyboard 2 or a Satechi wireless one with a numeric keypad. I don't think Apple's Magic Keyboard 2 with Numeric Keypad is worth an extra $70 over the Satechi.

For mice, I'd avoid Apple's Magic Mouse like the plague because words can not describe how bad it is to use.
I'd recommend mouse that you can also use with just your MBP while on the go, not heavy, big mice that only really belong on the desktop at home. No mouse really stands out to me apart from this one, honestly.

For monitors, at this price range you won't have a neat 1 cable display and power solution like you'd get from a 23.7" 4K LG UltraFine display for example or HDR10, or Retina. 1440p 27" displays are a bit out of this price range, but I'd personally sacrifice pixel density and get a 1080p display anyways so I still have a 27" display.

Look into trackball mice. I started having symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and tried about 7 different mice. They ranged from vertical mice to trackball. I did try out the anker vertical, and found out it wasn’t helping with all of my strain issues. I ended up settling on a traditional trackball mouse. It’s admittingly a huge learning curve. It does take a good amount of time to get used to it, and efficient enough where you’re not “thinking” to not move the mouse around (you use trackball mice in the stationary position).

I started with the Logitech M570 and used that with a Wrist Rest from my second semester of grad school until I finished (this spring). I would still have some strain, and then the Logitech MX Ergo came out and I bought it. Instantly hooked. It’s best of both worlds with trackball and vertical. Little tidbit, BestBuy sells an exclusive variant that includes an extra piece that increases the mouse’s angle. I recommend getting that one as I can’t live without it. It’s called the MX Ergo Plus.

Like you, I was having searing pains in my wrist and up my forearm after a long day of using Rhino. Both 2D drafting, and 3D modeling. Switching to an ergonomic mouse, for me a trackball and “vertical-esque” model has saved me!

A better guitar wont make you play guiatar better, it might sound better but it doesnt have any impact on how you play. However better running shoes, better tennis rackets better footballs will help you in the long run as playing with shoddy equiptment builds bad habits.

Playing with some old football will hurt you and limit your potential, and its even worse with mice.

Bad generic mice have arrays of issues regarding top mouse register speed, locking up, non liniar acceleration, angle snapping, which create bad habits for players and will become a problem at higher levels of play.

Im not saying that a better mouse makes you a better player, you probably can get to masters using anything, but you might as well get some solid hardware if you want to be competitive, to stop yourself forming bad habits and have a solid ground to build yourself on. Its like, sure you could use a track pad to play sc2, but you are limit ting yourself in the long run. You are placing unnecessary handicaps on yourself.

You dont need anything over £30 and you probably dont really need a mechanical or expensive keyboard, in my opinion the mouse is where serious issues are with cheap hardware. A g400 is in my opinion the best mouse on the market, and its pretty cheap

These things (link) are amazing for hand pain, I used to get acute pain in my index finger but not a peep since switching to the above.

I'll have to mark you down as an anomaly. Good luck with your company and your future coding endeavours. However, do try to remember that health is also wealth as I don't imagine your body appreciates 20 hours of coding straight ha.

Laptop Stand
I personally go paperless in PF debate, except for my flows. So having a stand to get my laptop off the desk and closer to eye-level is good. (The legs detract from the height in the picture.) Also this is widely used in my circuit by all laptop debaters and it is super reliable.

Extension cords for laptop chargers are also handy if you have a laptop with a low battery life. A lot of PC users end up using extension cords to charge their laptops in round.

Wireless Mouse
This is extremly useful when cutting cards on the go, in round throwing evidence into a speech, or even sorting through your articles in the Extemp prep room. So nice to have a cheap wireless mouse you don't have to worry about. I just use a Razer Naga for all the macros but I would reccomend the mouse I linked.

I just use my phone as a timer. I would really appreciate if someone linked a good timer that is more professional than my phone!

Also a good backpack that can hold tons of flow paper, a laptop, chargers, laptop stand, etc. without killing your back is important.

+1 to the Kerbal Idea, if he does not own it yet ofc. If you know a couple games he likes we can give you some good ideas. Also a mouse bungee is the best thing since sliced bread. It basically holds your mouse cable up off the table away from anything. It is pretty cheap and super awesome if you ask anyone who owns one.. Here is the amazon link.

If you need Headset recommendations I own a few pair of gaming headsets and can give a personal recommendation.

To extend a bit on this: There are basically three types of ergonomic/vertical mouses:

1. The slightly curved one. Cheap, still suited for gaming with a bit of practice. Example. There are a million clones on the market.
   

• The vertical mouse that is not yet a stick. Cheap now, not really suited for gaming anymore. Example. There are some clones of this, or rather, the example I link to is already a clone. The original was very expensive and seems to have vanished.
  
• Mouses that are basically a joystick. I never used that, and I would expect them to be garbage for gaming, but the hand looks to be in the most natural position. Example. Have seen no cheap version of those yet.
  
  There are some more, like this more vertical version of the first or strange finger clickers like this or better this (never tried that, actually looks interesting). Ah, and there are of course bigger trackballs, which some people prefer.
  
  It is my understanding that if you already have a carpal tunnel syndrome, a new mouse won't help. The only thing one can do is remove all stress from the hand till the pain is gone. That can take a long time. There are some braces/splints that are used to support this. After that healing period one can start using a PC again, and that's the moment to start with a vertical mouse. There is an operation that helps, necessary(?) in later stages of the syndrome.
  
  The other option is better: The moment you start to feel a bit of pain in your mouse hand after long PC sessions, try a different mouse - and if possible, use the PC a bit less, at least for a while. With a bit of luck this will prevent the syndrome from developing.
  
  Source: Some years ago I started to have pain in my mouse hand after work and read up what I could. I'm using the first mouse at home and the second one at work. Pain went away, I also took a few days off back then. But take what I say with a grain of salt, I'm not a medical professional.

Microsoft makes good ones. You would not believe it from their other products. Light yet sturdy, ambidextrous but ergonomic and they have good feel even when they are not pricey. And there is nothing extra that you only mess up with.

I'm using "comfort mouse 3000". I used to have one that was slightly bigger and it did fit my hand better, but other than that I could not wish for better.

Ironically only mouse that I never had problems with in Linux was made by Microsoft.

That's a good idea. I think it stands to reason that one will have to put their finger back down after the click anyway, right? I can find some mice that work like that. I noticed when I started using a state-funded Chromebook in high school that it was much easier to click things than I was used to, since I was using a modern trackpad. All you have to do with newer trackpads to click is gently tap, no *pressing* of any sort. The mouse I linked and other "touch mice" are basically just trackpads that aren't pad-shaped.

On the other hand, I wonder if your idea could be adapted into a mouse with two regions that are used for left-clicking. So your finger is resting, but then you gently move it up or to the side to the "secondary click position". Now that your index finger is resting on the secondary zone, the left-click is complete. These would be really close together to be useful. Click-and-drag would not be possible without an additional full "click" mechanism. But that's ok, a full press on the mouse button occasionally beats doing it for every click. Interesting stuff!

I used to play on a logitech office usb mouse for 2 years. Of course it held me back with performance sometimes, but it did not hold me back from having fun playing the game! I went from silver 3 to AK with that mouse and a laptop which gave me 70FPS in game! It wasn't until Nov 2015 that I got a chance to make a nice PC build.

So don't think about it too much. Just play if you like the game.

From what I've read it's quite similar to the MyBook but doesn't offer backup, encryption and password protection by default. Both are good for schucking. The main advantage of the Elements Desktop 8TB seems to be the ease of adding another drive in its case later on if you decide to schuck it.


The Seagate Expansion 8TB is on sale for only £109 and I've heard only good things about it in comparison to their smaller drives which seem to be problematic. I went with the MyBook 8TB myself.

The wire on the g403 seems to be a braided cable so it’s not good news. However there have been instances of batches of G502 mice have bad cables, so it may just be your model, but there’s no way to be sure.

However like I said before there are many Logitech mice with the exact same shape. So you can go wireless if you’d like with the g603/g703. From what your issue I’d say you could remedy the cable drag with a mouse bungee or some cable clips.

There's a ton of companies who sell mouse bungees and usually they're pretty good. Though I'd recommend you check out reviews first since some are too lightweight or gimmicky. I personally use the Zowie camade if you got questions.

Depends on what you need in a mouse.

If you're looking for a regular gaming mouse with decent DPI, you can go super cheap and get decent DPI compaired to a regular mouse, but not any super build quality. You can Go a small step up with a budget name brand mouse, which will have slightly better build quality. Then you can jump up to a Decent gaming mouse which has high DPI and good build quality, or this one as an alternative.

If you are an MMO gamer and want side buttons, there aren't many budget options, but the Razer Nagga MMOG 2014 Or the Logitech G600.

I have peronsally used all levels of gaming mice, and still use a super cheap wireless gaming mouse with my laptop, and I use an original Razer Naga MMOG on my desktop. I like them both, though I don't expect my cheap wireless one to last long, it still performs extremely well for the price.

Keep in mind these are just suggestions, Other people might like/disklike these mice for there own personal reasons. I peronally like the ergonomics of the Razer mice over any other.

Definitely like a triangle. Imagine using a vertical mouse, the hand is almost like a straight line up.

Vertical mouses are not too expensive, this one is my favorite (only $20). I would start with the mouse maybe.

To avoid RSI, you want to avoid much hand movement and keep the hand on the home row keys as much as possible (asdfjkl;), evil mode is very good for this as your hand won't be moving left and right, you'll also want to avoid using your pinky to hit CTRL or moving your hand to hit ESC. This is how hit CTRL

I get what you mean, but I still think there is many ways to practice aim, if your problem is shooting people's heads at mid/long range you should maybe try practicing your tracking.

If your wireless mouse fucks up sometimes, you can get a mouse with a wire but get a mouse bungee

I am LE currently and I believe you can always improve aim to a point where 1 taps are reasonably easy. Its not about having the most incredible aim (which does help win but you can win without amazing aim), its about good decisions.

Just bought the Ergo MX for $65 + tax from BestBuy.com after pricematch to Amazon.

A little miffed about pointer acceleration being missing from the new "Logitech Options" driver (no more SetPoint like the M570). But found a workaround: turn on "Enhance pointer precision" in the old school mouse control panel.

Another nice thing about Best Buy's model (not Amazon's) is that it's the Ergo Plus which comes with a metal base to increase the angle, possibly making it more comfortable depending on your preferences. Most of BB's CSRs don't seem to notice when approving the pricematch ;)

I don't think I would have paid the $100 MSRP on this thing after buying so many M570's for $20-$25, but for ~$70, the extra comfort and heft (and side scrolling!) is worth it to me, and so far I'm satisfied w/ the upgrade.

I'm at 250 hours for CSGO and 50 on CSS. One problem I've found is I used to play a TON of TF2 and COD, Which encourage Run N' Gunning while Counterstrike... Not so much. I am using This, This and This for my gear, Although I plan on getting a new keyboard and mouse soon. My FPS stays at 60 or so usually but ranges from 40-120 FPS. I know my callouts and a good amount of Nade spots. If you could explain or link a website that expands on what these are stutter stepping, inside lane's, peeker's advantage, pop flash's, trading, and passive angle's. I'm testing out a G502 right now! The thing is mostly comfortable, but it rides significantly higher than this old hunk o' junk that I'm used to (and while according to Amazon my current mouse is heavier than the G502, that couldn't be further from the truth; the G502 is noticeably heavier than the Microsoft mouse).

If you have a computer place nearby or work with an occupational therapist perhaps ask them for help. There are joystick options, some ergonomic mice may fit your hand more easily. I rather like gaming mice, particularly the naga. I find the side buttons massively useful for teamspeak, puush, macros, and AHK. Amusingly, a 10 dollar mouse has 2 side buttons and better wireless ability than any "gaming" mice with or without side buttons. ^(Side note, mice with generic side buttons, meet) ^x-mouse

Keyboards I couldnt care less about. The only benefit are the macros, which are pointlessly out of reach anyways. If you want mechanical, look at a generic kind.

Or simply put... Other than a quality, preferably wired, gaming mouse, everything is a joke.

Might seem old and ghetto but it has a flawless sensor and it's pretty good ergonomically

I use the Microsoft Wedge mouse. It is an amazing Bluetooth mouse with great range and is, literally, comically small. Seriously I laughed when I first opened the package, but it works amazingly well and is extremely comfortable considering it is such a unique design.

Sure. How cheap is cheap? This is one of the best out there, its $50, I own it and its very good.

What would you recommend for someone looking to upgrade from this? It's a super lightweight mouse that's just been really awesome for me- I've used the same model for like a decade and a half now.

i can personally only recommend the ones i have owned.

If you are afraid of driver software or are too lazy to keep updating get yourself a ZOWIE FK1 or 2. I personally use a FK1 and it lets you cycle threw 4 dpi settings and 4 hz styles, all without any software.

The other is the Steelerseries Rival, i loved this mouse, one of the best sensors i have personally encountered, the only thing that bothers me is its oddly shaped once you have played with a more "standard" shaped mouse, as in if you are used to a normal size it can hurt your hand.

Logitech G400 or MX518, boths saddly not produced anymore but these where the best "older" mice i have ever used.

Also worth consideration for a productivity mouse. MX Anywhere 2S for $56. Not the lowest it's ever been but a good price for an awesome productivity mouse.

I know this is a bit tangential, but a few years ago I broke my right hand (one of the bones between the wrist and the base of the finger) but couldn't work without using a mouse. I ended up buying one of these and could use it while my hand was in a cast and even raided in WoW with it.

The one you linked is USB, but they make a Bluetooth version, what you want is the Arc Mouse Surface Edition. I've used this for a couple years and it works great. Not the most ergonomic thing but nicer than a flat puck.

Reddit liked my last battlestation, so I decided to post my new, more portable solution.

My new battlestation was made under slightly more constraints. Everything I own fits into a single suitcase, as I moved to a New York City for work. When I got here, I found that my two laptops made a very unergonomic and uncomfortable workstation. TO remedy that problem, I sourced a few parts of Amazon.

I bought a stand for my tablet, two laptop stands meant for DJs, a wireless mouse and keyboard and a kneeling chair. Everything breaks down and fits into my suitcases except for the chair, which I would probably leave behind if I am forced to move again.

The tablet is used as a TV. I use it to watch documentaries, shows streamed from youtube, hulu, netflix or thepiratebay. The internal speakers on the tablet are a bit quiet, so I have them streaming to a Logitech UE Boom Mini. I've owned the two laptops since starting university - a Lenovo x200, and a x201 I bought a few years later to replace the x200 when it stopped detecting a battery. They're both pretty old now, but the x201 still manages to play league of legends (barely). The x200 (right) is hooked up to a set of Steelseries Siberia v3 headphones that I use for skype, or music / shows when my roommates are watching something else on the big TV, or are having loud sex. A small and surprisingly weak fan is constantly plugged in and does do a bit to keep me cool. I'll have to revisit the cooling solution when summer hits again.

I've considered upgrading the laptops, but then I figured I shouldn't be spending a lot of time inside gaming anyways. Instead, I bought a new snowboard for the upcoming season.

3 = a wrist rest of any kind will worsen, not prevent, carpal tunnel and other issues. So I guess air is the best material. If you must have one (and you shouldn't), wood and hard materials, while pretty and trendy, are the worst possible material for this application. I've had some luck with bead-filled wrist rests.

4 = none, learn better posture.

5 = same, use a $20 vertical mouse instead

Your mouse, from what you described, sounds like a wireless mouse with a USB wireless receiver, and typically it's only going to stay that way unless you knew you were buying a BT mouse

I've used the one for work for a year now, and every button is working perfectly. Plus I've only had to change the battery twice so far. Yeah, one single AA battery lasts for like 6 months in this thing.

As a Zowie fan boy one thing I admit is their Mouse Bungee is too expensive, in fact I believe Mouse Bungees in general are over priced. However this is one that's cheap and very reliable. All types of cable sizes fit in it. Here is the link, I own two of these and they are great.

I use a combination of different ergonomic mice, I switch between this joystick style mouse and an Evoluent VerticalMouse on my right hand, and at work I use a left-handed vertical mouse. For keyboards I use the Microsoft Sculpt at work and a corsair K65 with cherry mx red mechanical buttons at home. I also wear copper compression gloves which helps ease the pain after.

The thing I wish I had done earlier was just to address it all a lot sooner. It's easier to prevent than to treat. You could probably invest $200 and prevent long term pain. Also try using your weak hand for mousing at work so the load is split evenly. It takes time but you do eventually get good at it.

Same here. I got the Pro for home and this 203 for work since it fits my style better. I used to use the MS Optical Wheel mouse and this mouse reminds me of how I used to hold that one, but with improvements. The deathadder elite was comfortable at first, but not as precise when I needed to go extra claw-like with my fingertips.

I've been using these for over a year now and they feel great. Easy install and everything, just make sure you peel off the plastic covers before use.

When your MX518 dies (I hope that day isn't soon for me, I love it), just grab a G400 if you don't want to find a reseller for the discontinued one. Same shell, and it doesn't have the odd pattern on top.

Ordered a refurbished Logitech T630, and it works pretty good. The back and fourth swipe gestures work, as does the two finger tap for the app drawer. It's a little on the small side, and scrolling is a bit choppy. Overall it'll work until something better comes along.

(You only have to move them out of the enclosure - this is called "shucking") - you really should check the price of these where you live.

Only thing to note is:
You'll sooner or later run into something like the 3,3v bug where a shucked drive isnt recognized by the computer.
There's several solutions like:

1. Taping the 3,3v pin (i hate this method - every time u unplug - you'll probably have to reapply the tape)

I just carry mine in a laptop sleeve in my Filson most days and it has held up well. I do recommend a good bluetooth mouse. The trackpad on the keyboard has gotten better, but it can still be infuriating at times. I have one of these that stays in my briefcase. Its small cheap and easy. I might upgrade to one that works on glass eventually though. A Bluetooth keyboard may be worth it to you as well depending on how much you plan on typing.

Same here! I thought it would mean thier headsets are good too but I've had nothing but problems with them. I ended up having to keep the G933 always plugged in, so I got a pack of these that work wonders. Also have heard good things about these with headsets.

I've had that and the Logitech T630, the Microsoft one is definitely more comfortable to use, but the T630 is the one I use the most since I'm always traveling between meetings and going on-site (engineering work). :)

Ergonomics/Easing Wrist Strain - - - Purchase Advice Request

I experience wrist and forearm pain. I have identified my forearm orientation as a cause of strain (parallel to the table vs. the more natural perpendicular orientation, as if one were holding a ball).

I am deciding between these two Logitech mice:

• Logitech MX Ergo

  I've not used either, but I've been able to hold each one in a store. The MX Ergo felt a bit more comfortable in my hand, but I am concerned about adjusting to the trackball/forgoing optical. The MX Vertical seems to be specifically designed for the problem I am describing, but again, I was partial to the feel of the MX Ergo.

Mice optical sensors are supposedly accurate to hundreds of DPI. IIRC even the classical Microsoft optical mouse is 800DPI at 125Hz so it should be capable of up to 1/800th of an inch precision and should sample 125 times per second.... ideally Mice with high quality sensors will be capable of thousands of DPI and hundreds to thousands of Hz.

As I said, those ratings are under ideal conditions. For one, the Hz limits how fast you can move the mouse. And more importantly, it depends on the surface you're using the mouse on. For example, my Logitech mouse is supposedly 1000 DPI, but if I use it on anything that's not a cloth mousepad, I get around 600ish and it's very inconsistent.

They neuter it with a non-removable battery & make it's only power solution being tethered to an umbilical cord! Not to mention they taxed the 💩 out of the price point on this new model!!

Honestly for the money this is one of my favorite wireless mice.

I think an i5 in this build would have to be at the expense of the GPU so instead I went for an Ivy Bridge i3.

The mouse, headphones and microphone would bring this upto ~£725. If you want a generic keyboard then his would go down to £700. I've gone for a separate headphones and the clip on mic as these are what I've seen recommended for budget options rather than cheap "gaming" headsets with both.

Personally if I did it over again, I would just go with one of the cheap bungees. A mouse bungee is a mouse bungee imo. The more expensive ones like the Camade and its knockoff do the same thing as the $8 bungee I posted. Hell I have a buddy that tapes his mouse cord to his monitor and it serves the same function.

I'd recommend Amazon over ebay for something like this, you're more likely to get a consistent product from the actual listed vendor. Here's an example of a good one, I got these shortly after I got my Spectrum and they've been great, very smooth without slipping, though they are cut just a smidge small (which seems to be a common issue) so some dust gets in the edges, but not enough to change how the mouse moves.

Logitech m705 with the set point software you can customize the buttons to a number of options or any individual letter. Even specificaly to each program. I mainly use mine for CAD work and the shape is great for long term use.

I'm using a microsoft laser mouse (laser was a HUGE deal when my dad bought it, upgrading from a ball mouse) that's 16 or so years old. It's been a great mouse for how many years we have used it but it has an issue of disconnecting and reconnecting now. Not sure exactly why this happens. It has worked without a problem until about a year ago it started to sometimes disconnect and reconnect.

The Microsoft Arch Touch Mouse Surface Edition has a touch wheel and folds up (turns off). The top of the mouse touch thing does page up, and the bottom half does page down. Double tap the middle to act as a middle mouse button. No side buttons or anything, but I really like it!

I believe this mouse has won more FPS tournaments than any other.

Here is a Logitech one. Depending on what wireless mouse you have, it might make sense. Like I used to use the G903 with which the mouse pad might have been nice. But now that I use the G Pro Wireless, I really do not have to care about it all that much as the new sensor in the mouse uses so little power that you do not have to charge it for days in my case.

I use the Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse when I'm on the road, mainly because I got it cheap from Amazon, and it's really small. However, while it's an elegantly built device, it can't simultaneously left and right click, so I wouldn't recommend it for gaming.

An obvious choice would be the MX Ergo which is just a premium version of the m570.

The only other company I can think of that offers a good thumb trackball would be ELECOM and it's EX-G Pro.

The later's nice because it has a lot of extra buttons relative to Logitech's. I like using mine, but overall I prefer fingerballs so I usually use my Deft Pro.

Only downside to ELECOM's mice is that the software to customize/assign binds isn't the most user-friendly.

I thought about the dock, but then i'll have to keep taking it out of the case, plus I'm always working. If the case isn't comfortable then i'll prolly get the dock; I was looking at the wireless display adapter what do you think of that?

I went through some replacement skates in 8-9 months but I do both of the above, this things got some distance on it.

edited- guess I didn't get the double thick last time from my amazon history, no wonder these seemed to erode so fast, last time I had the double thick- I would look for those if you use it heavily like I mentioned.

No, the original Wedge Touch is Bluetooth as well.
AFAIK the only differences between the two are that the Surface edition is slightly darker (to match the black body of the RT, SP1, and SP2), and that the original can be found for WAY cheaper on Amazon

It's just the Logitech Power Play mouse pad. It's what most people are using. It does use a smaller 'puck' in the center of the mat, but the charging is somehow different from normal QI charging, so it will charge the mouse in any position on the mat. I think it's only compatible with Logitech mice for that reason.
