So my suggestions: I've linked the things I use, but they're just suggestions.
So this morning when I left for work all I could see was still the white stem way down in the hole. I got home to my first set of cotyledons and also first of real leaves!
I also got a ph control kit today, and it looks like my ph is sitting right around 6, so I believe that is perfect.
I was planning on just giving this a shot with minimal effort to see how it goes. Growing a variety of herbs in the Aerogarden was super easy, and it was hard to keep all the growth under control.
After doing more reading(because when I start doing something I have to do it right) I realized that the LED panel on the Aerogarden isn't even close to the wattage that anyone else is using. The starter package on growweedeasy.com includes a 250w light. The one on the Aerogarden is 20w, but the directions say you can keep it just a couple inches above the plant, whereas all the other guides for higher wattage lights say they need to be kept much further away. I would guess that is just because they have so much more wattage?
I grow lots of normal plants as well and don't get too much actual sunlight, so I have a couple extra reflectors, CFLs, and another LED grow bulb sitting around. I have 1x LED! and 2x CFL! extra.
How does mixing LED and CFLs work? I'm thinking I will need to get this thing all the light I can. Should I get a light socket extender and splitter so that I can get both the CFLs into a reflector, and also use the extra LED?
I plan on low stress training it to keep it as short as possible as the Aerogarden light only extends 12inches. I am able to extend that a few more inches using that knife with a stick taped to it, but then the cable becomes the limiting factor.
I also don't plan on moving it out of the 1gal Aerogarden reservoir, so it will probably be limited in size by that as well. The aerogarden comes with these nutrients!(4-3-6) that I had been planning to follow their recommendations of use which is basically give it 2 capfuls(maybe a couple mL) every other week when you change out the reservoir water. In between feedings just keep the water level high. Should I actually buy legit nutes!, or will the Aerogarden ones do a pretty good job?
Sooo I guess my questions are:
Anyone grown with an Aerogarden before? How'd it work? Any tips?
Anyone mixed LED and CFL lights before? Is that fine to do?
I should definitely use all the lights currently available to me, and I should probably even get a couple more 42w soft white CFLs right?
My goal was to keep this cheap and easy, but I'm thinking I should also get another timer for all these extra lights I plan on using now. Using the Aerogarden timer for the 20w LED and then turning on the other lights manually probably won't be anywhere near as effective, and also takes away from the easy factor.
Can I use the aerogarden nutes to keep this easy and cheap, or should I get some legit nutes?
Thanks!!
Thanks everyone! I ended up going with the hue starter kit (http://amzn.com/B00BSN8DN4) for the lights. I'll add something like an August smart lock and the Nest thermostat down the road.
The suggestions that you pointed me to looked really cool, but honestly, they seem too complicated for me. I know some of them are as easy as copy and paste, but frankly, I've heard the same about flashing my android phone with OTA updates and that didn't exactly work out for me. I just don't have the time to devote to learning what would be necessary to get this done the way that I want to.
Again, thank you for all of your helpful suggestions. It's really great to see such discussion and I really appreciate all of you taking the time to help me.
As of right now, I am good on space. I have some room on my window sill on the other side behind my bed that I can fit some IF I get any more. I have 42 total plants so I really don't NEED any more... I am trying to stay pretty cheap to be honest. Less than $50 but I don't want something so cheaply made that it won't last me a month. I have been looking at something like this bulb in this lamp to clip onto my bed to get pointed at each window or even onto a cat tree, which I moved out of the way for the sake of the photo but I usually keep to the left of my nightstand. I don't know about the LED lightbulb but I also know that succs prefer blue light but I read that fluorescent light is ideal for a cheap, quality lighting setup. While I know that LEDs aren't cheaper than fluorescent, do they work as well? I honestly know little to nothing about plant lighting, sorry for the essay!
Edit: Looked at the Overwinter Megathread and someone posted that their Succs loved this bulb so I might just get 2 these if they are tried and true. I also might just end up getting a real, hard setup with shelves, lighting, the mix. It might be my best option at this time.

Couldn’t seem to add it on PCPP but feel free to add a RGB strip like this one - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F3C6VSO/ref=asc_df_B01F3C6VSO5471018?smid=A6SXSZXC805J3&tag=hawk-future-20&linkCode=df0&creative=395129&creativeASIN=B01F3C6VSO&ascsubtag=pcg-1036245267264580734-20. I already included RGB ram, RGB fans, and a white case, and a white cpu fan, but you could opt for an RGB fan also like this one - https://pcpartpicker.com/product/RcdFf7/cooler-master-masterliquid-ml240l-rgb-667-cfm-liquid-cpu-cooler-mlw-d24m-a20pc-r1. Anyway, this will be a great gaming build, especially if you overclock, and the 6 core performs great for school!
Edit: and for GPU a 1070 ti will be perfect for steady 60FPS max settings 1440p gaming and it will bring your total to around $1400.
Hue sells many different configurations of the starter kit, with different amounts and types of bulbs. The cheaper one likely has fewed bulbs, and probably only white bulbs. Older kits can also be cheaper. My opinion is that if you're going to get smart bulbs that don't do color, then you're better of with smart switches. The Hue "white" bulbs are a really ugly yellow that I can't stand. White Ambiance is a nice middle ground, at half the cost of the color bulbs, while giving you full control over the "warmth" spectrum. So you can change your lighting to match the time of day, for instance.
This is the cheapest kit I see on Amazon.com. It's basically the cost of the bridge with 2 white bulbs. Then you have the non-refurb for slightly more. This one is still white bulbs, but now you have 4. This one is like the first kit, but with a dimmer switch. I recommend dimmer switches, as otherwise guests will use the wall switch, disabling your smart bulbs. Then you start getting into the white ambiance kits, this one with a dimmer and 2 bulbs. Finally the color bulb kits will be the most expensive.
So, what's right for you? Depends on what you want. Usually you want to buy the starter kit that has a "free bridge". Use the following price chart to determine the value of your kit:
If the kit costs the value of it's contents or less, it's worthwhile. If it costs more than that, you're paying for the bridge. Usually the cheaper kits will have you paying more for the bridge. By the time you get into the 4-color-pack range they're giving you a credit.
Now, all that said, if your concern is cheap DO NOT BUY INTO HUE! It's extremely expensive, probably the priciest smart bulb. Ikea Tradfri and LiFX both have cheaper options that are similar in quality. Or if you really want cheap, go with Sengled. Hue is the premium option.
I’ve only ever grown with artificial lights (unique living situation) so here’s some I can personally vouch for and recommend.
Sansi bulbs. I have the 24W model (fits in any standard desk lamp) and the 15W lights. These have special lenses that focus the beam very strongly in one spot, like a spotlight so it can be raised pretty high and cover a large-ish area. Don’t underestimate these, I put a plant too close to center and it turned jet black in 2 days. He bounced back just fine but these are definitely strong.
Strip lights. I’ve since upgraded my Sansi’s to these with a dedicated shelf. These aren’t as strong, I talked to a user on r/Succulents that reported haw etiolation 9 inches away from the light. However, once she lowered it to 5 inches they said they get amazing stress coloration. To put it in perspective, they said they had a Black Prince that’s always been green but has since gone black like the plant’s supposed to be.
As a bonus, here are the shelves I use, they are exactly the same dimensions as the lights.
Both are very capable depending on your needs.
Edit 11/26/19: Sooo, the strip lights have shot up to $200 for some reason. When I linked them, they were only $49. It’s either a stock issue or the new price, not sure.
It's often recommended to use a portable generator, but they can be a little expensive. I don't have any idea how to rig it to a car battery either, but that sounds bulky, and I wouldn't want to be carrying around a vessel sloshing with sulfuric acid in addition to a net and a backpack full of jars.
I purchased this blacklight for my setup, and it's decent for the money. A lot of people will recommend you get a Mercury Vapor (MV) setup, but I reckon they'll have a considerably larger power draw. Also, here is a link to the sheet that I purchased. It's a really good value, especially since it will get covered in various bug fluids.
Funnel trapping is also a good method, but I've never tried it personally. Let this post ferment a little bit, and I'm sure you'll get a little melting pot of information going!
Good luck!
Yeah, that will certainly help, and, as /u/juanitopeppers points out, move the CFLs closer. A good rule of thumb is to place your hand on the tops of the peppers (palm side down). If you can stand the heat from the bulbs for 30 seconds, then, your peppers can too. Also, check out these CFLs -> https://www.amazon.com/Photography-Fluorescent-Spectrum-LimoStudio-LMS121/dp/B005FRCUHY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1497409361&sr=8-9&keywords=6500k+cfl - with 4 of those, you would be around 28,000 lumens which would give you decent results. Also, if you could surround the plants with some form of reflective material (mylar / thick white paint on wood / grow tent) you will also increase the efficiency of your lights. Happy growing!
$20 for a stack of cut acrylic? You've got to do a much better job at explaining the value proposition here. Especially when the average person is not going to have any idea what it is you're selling.
Also - pictures, pictures, pictures. The average person will spend 5 seconds on your website tops, read 1 sentence (the heading), look at the pics, and leave. Your pictures look like they were taken in your backyard in the dark. Go buy:
Also, work on your shopify website. Spend a few hours - its not hard to modify an existing theme to look good. You need some color and a more clean layout. The site does not look professional. Why would a customer trust you if your store front looks amateur? They'll leave before they even look at your products.
If you believe in this niche, great. Make the website slick, get good pictures, think about why YOU would purchase these and write up some good copy, and then go drum up some business by participating in a related forum / subreddit / listserv / whatever. Is this actually a problem people need solving? You'll find out.
P.S. I know those blacklight photos look cool and all, but do your customers actually care? Are you going to use this product under blacklight? If not, you're probably turning off anyone older than highschool age.
P.P.S. Stop referring to yourself as cardistry-cards in the copy. The hyphen isn't doing you any favors. Shorten to CC or Cardistry if you're even going to do the 3rd person thing.

So I have a two bedroom apartment and I've got a mix of the bulbs, the Hue Gos and the light strips.
I don't use any non-Hue lighting so all of my light is controllable via app and timers. It allows you to create presets, so I have a number of lighting schemes that I really like that get progressively dimmer over the course of an evening and move from brighter colors like greens and oranges and yellows to soft blues and reds and purples as it gets later. It kind of becomes a Pavlovian cue that sleep time is coming. You can also set them on timed transitions - so it may take 30 minutes to slowly transition between the settings. So the light can be always moving slowly into differing colors and brightnesses schemes over the course of the evening.
In the mornings, rather than use an alarm clock, I wake to a gradually rising indoor sunrise where warm orange lights come up over the course of 30 minutes. Such a pleasant way to wake up. Gradual and natural instead of sudden and abrupt.
It's also super cool with voice control via Alexa, Siri, Google Home, etc. I just say things like 'Alexa, chill mode' and the lighting hits a smooth preset I have.
The stuff is expensive, but you can add pieces over time to the network. They are energy efficient and so far have lasted really well. I've not had any fail in 3 or 4 years of using them. I started off just wanting a lightstrip and ended up going whole house.
Life changing.
Great work! I was a little surprised that Wink isn't on there. For $35 the 1st gen hub is a great entry point for beginners as a Zigbee/Z-Wave radio. I used Wink's built in automations (Robots) to get started while getting HA up and running. It's easy to turn Wink into a "dumb" hub once you get HA all figured out, then you can look into dedicated radios for HA to take Wink out of the picture completely. Wink can be a little slow at times, but it is a great low cost entry point.
You also might want to add Sengled Element bulbs and Sylvania Smart+ color bulb, they are inexpensive and work extremely well!
Not saying you're wrong for liking them, but that's a serious downgrade in brightness over your fluorescent fixtures.
A 4' fluorescent bulb (new, obviously) will put out about 3000 lumens, and you had 12 of them, so 36klumens.
Those fixtures don't state how many lumens they put out, but based on an average cheap LED l/w efficiency, 1000 is a safe bet. So you added 11klumens.
Instead, take these lights, which put out 3700 lumens. 3 of them put out the same as 11 of your fixtures, and cheaper too. (they're $40 at costco). $0.02/lumen for your CEs versus $0.015/lumen for these, or $0.011/lumen if you get them at costco.
Plus you save on wiring and boxes by more than halving the number of fixtures you need. Not that those blue boxes are expensive, haha.
I typically advise people to avoid those cheap LEDs because they're typically...trash. I've used one and while it certainly did slow the rate of etiolation, the succs did etiolate.
I use a Viparspectra 300w, but that is for full indoor all-year-round growth. A couple of T5 or T8 fluorescents would probably be best for you, to be honest, if you can attach them to some shelving. Something like these, that are listed above, should work.
Hey,
I'm rather new to hydroponics and so I had to do a little experimenting as I go along. Keep in mind I have a small hydro setup of about 24 plants.
I recently picked up this bad boy from home depot:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lighting-4-Light-T5-White-High-Output-Fluorescent-High-Bay-IBC-454-MV/202838871
I use a vertical hydroponics setup, which, for obvious design reasons, means the plants at the bottom get screwed out of the valuable light based simply on their position. In the meantime I picked up this light to help with the sprouting process:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005P29K1S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I thought this light was the bees knees. I even started using it to compensate some of the lower plants. So then I picked up this bad boy:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FRCUHY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This light is incredible. It's 12" so expect a doozy of a light. I put an 8 1/2" reflector on it and then used tin foil to extend the reflector so that it actually worked as a reflector. Since then, I use the lights on the lower plants via a hanging light system. The system is: extension cord + polarized light bulb adapter + light bulb. I'm in the process of testing it now but in the future the last light bulbs are the best bang for your buck and extremely modular to work with (if you like to tinker with your system modular parts go a long way).
Anyway, hope that helps!
I've been browsing the grow light thread and thinking about getting more succulents before winter, and would like some input on which setup seems better or if you would recommend something else entirely. This adjustable growlight which has a gooseneck and clip (also comes with option for timer) or this bulb and this clamp light? I currently don't have many succulents at all (which obviously can change) so I don't need the light to cover a huge area. Should I set up a specific area to do this with shelving etc (please recommend if so) or is on top of a cedar chest on trays fine?
I'm pretty new to this and appreciate any advice I can get here.
Highly recommend Phillip's Hue products, they're great and the API is pretty neat to work with. They have a light strip which integrates perfectly.
Thanks! I'll check on the bulb. Something like a 6200K 23 watt I think. Daylight with blue end mostly. CFL to keep heat at 80 deg works perfect at 10 inches away. About 10 bucks on amazon plus another 10 for the reflector is best I could find. Will get a 2800k for the peppers and tomatoes to induce flowering after I get them on the hydro for a month or two. The lettuce stays on blueish since it's all veg growth you want.

I was checking out a lot of the huge CFL's. I'm thinking maybe 64 (8 rows of 8) of these, each in a reflective housing, mounted above a ripstop diffuser? Perhaps the surrounding ceiling around the lights could be painted white just for good measure, whatever it may achieve. I'm unsure how to figure out how many of these I would need... I will have to do some research so I can find math to do.
I know these put out a low amount of heat, but would it be wise to install a few fans to circulate some air above the canvas?
Thanks for your input. Every little bit helps!
I'm in a similar boat. Serious winter SAD and I live in Chicago so there's no getting around the weather here. These are some things that might help that aren't lightboxes:

https://www.amazon.com/Lavish-Home-Sunlight-Floor-White/dp/B003T5KIL4
I don't know if you're a reader, but I tend to load up on lighthearted, warm area centric novels so that I can at least imagine being in a bright, sunny place. It helps a lot.

Tossing the description through google translate...
> Color temperature: 2,700 Kelvin. High-quality, warm white light for a cozy and secure home. Compact dimming without installation - Experience stepless dimming via Hue dimmer switch or Hue app
These are the "white" lights. They only dim the intensity - there is no color changing functionality. They cannot shift the color temperature of "white" either.
They are perfectly good bulbs in the right spot. I have them in my kitchen.
If you are after the... lets call it "hue experience", you will want the equivalent of the color starter. The white ambient (white ambient starter) is what I find myself using most often. The white ambient lights can't change to blue or red - but it can change to a very warm or very cool white... which I find more useful for living spaces.
Personally I use a wink hub and have quite a few GE lights. They recently went up in price and so I found a light on amazon (Sengled ) that works pretty well with my wink hub. I also have a smart plug for my 5 light lamp as I didn't want to pay for 5 bulbs.
$10 per smart bulb is a great deal:
https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-Dimmable-Compatible-SmartThings-Assistant/dp/B01N7I4X94/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1512056543&sr=8-5&keywords=amazon+smart+bulb
I don't have any Hue lights yet, but am starting to look.
How good are these "bundle offers" on the official Hue site? $45 for 3 white ambiance lights and $64 for 6 plain white dimmable bulbs.
Since we're so close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I'm considering going ahead and getting the starter kit that's on sale and then just holding off to see what I can get in about a month for cheaper.
The main reason I'm starting to look at smart bulbs (vs switches) is I suffer from migraines often, and I prefer warmer color whites and my wife prefers the cooler whites because it looks more natural. With the white ambiance bulbs I think we can both be happy.
https://www.amazon.com/Feit-917972-Electric-Utility-Light/dp/B00LFAY5SM
Pretty sure this is the one I bought, though I don't think I paid that $50 price tag.
My garage is 21x21 or so, and one works well for the half gym, if I used the entire garage, two would suffice in my opinion. They are SUPER bright.
> I would propose that any fixture you purchase be able to fit the Philips Hue bulbs. You can set them to one color out of 16 million.
I disagree. In addition to being overpriced, they are overkill. Hue bulbs may be capable of 16 million colors, but you would never want 15.8 million of those for a bathroom.
If OP wants smart bulbs, something like these $15 tunable white bulbs will serve them better. Cheaper, not proprietary hub, and can still be set to any color you'd reasonably want.
There are also no-hub-required wifi tunable bulbs, but I don't have experience with them.
But really, OP should just buy basic 2700-3000k led bulbs and not worry about being able to customize the exact hue of light.
Already good comments here, but TBF the best remote things are outlets and wall switches. That way if/when you hit a switch to turn something off the 'old' way it will still respond if you want it on.
Also, you need a hub. Smartthings or Wink.
The rest are worthless (Hue hub and all the other hubs). IMO Philips Hue is lame. If you want colored bulbs go get Sylvania lightify (cheaper, less crap in your house since it doesn't need its own hub).
Ideal starter setup would be an echo dot $50, a hub $100, two wall switches ($30ea) (for unswitched outlets) and a couple wall paddle switches ($30ea). That much hardware would set you back about $270, but would add a fair bit of fun and convenience.
I completely agree with the general sentiment that this is a stupid change to force on users.
If I was to guess, Google's reacting to bad press from Nest owners who had their cameras watched after their accounts were compromised. A better way to handle the fear of someone watching your cameras without your knowledge:
Luckily, I had some LightsDim Black Out stickers (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009WSN8PK/ref=dp_cerb_3) on hand when my cameras LEDs got turned on. I recommend them, they cover the LED great and blend completely into the Nest cameras.
I use the Phillips Hue lighting system. Pricey, but awesome.
And they've got some other new options as well. Very cool stuff.
Hi there! Adjustable temperature is one thing I drool over with the hue system (yeah, I'm weird lol). This is the minimum you would need to see the CT range of the hue ambiance bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Dimmable-Compatible-HomeKit-Assistant/dp/B01N4OMRJ9/
However, you only get 4 presets vs the entire range of color temps and the system by itself is not "smart" or compatible with your phone. It is however able to be added to a full system with hue bridge such as...
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Starter-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01F6T4R80/
Which comes with everything you need to get started and connect your phone to the system. This setup will allow you to play with every single variation of CT for the hue ambiance bulbs via your smartphone!
The first option is the most affordable, however you only get 4 preconfigured non adjustable settings, vs the second is probably your best bet for a smart phone compatible system that gives you 'infinite' adjustability. If you don't care about smartphone/smarthome integration, look into Philips Sceneswitch bulbs! I have a bunch of them in some multi bulb fixtures I didn't want to spend the money for ambiance bulbs and dimmer switches lol.
There's tons of cheaper stuff out there, but you'd have to be flexible on your must haves.
No other lock that I know of except the August can be accessed with time sensitive or love time codes. The Schlage and Kwikset models can have codes input but they'd have to be deleted later manually. Schlage sense locks can be accessed through their app to delete codes or deactivate them remotely, but that app costs $5 a month so the August would be cheaper in the long run as there isn't a fee.
You can get a bunch of Cree LEDs that connect to WiFi and are controlled with Alexa natively, they're pretty cheap comparatively at $14. Though you'll lose your other must of light temperature colors changing.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01701DKVM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_RMV7ybKWDSJPA
You could save a couple bucks using Osram Lightify bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R3ID2BG/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_XIV7ybGDPJD6Z
If you don't mind going the DIY route, you could probably come in under $100 for parts for the strips:
Instead of the flat channel, you might be better off with angled channel for mounting the strips above the cabinets, since they'll throw more light on the wall, which is what you'll actually see - https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Aluminum-Mounting-Installations-1901-V/dp/B00PJSSD7K/
There's a ZWave RGBW controller but it's more expensive than the wifi one and can take some more configuration: https://www.amazon.com/Fibaro-Micro-Controller-Z-wave-Strips/dp/B00P1N68FW/
If you get the snap-on connectors, I recommend putting a small amount of solder on all of the pads where you'll be connecting them on the strips, so that they make a good connection.
As for the puck lights, you could probably get something like this and wire the distributor to the wifi/ZWave controller, instead of plugging it into the controller it comes with: https://www.amazon.com/Changing-Christmas-Furniture-Ambiance-Lighting/dp/B01N2I47VH/ref=sr_1_2
I see what you mean, I've been doing some research and I found some CFLs that are specific to growing. Like this link. I don't know how well they work though. I like keeping it in my room and I don't really want to hang overhead
florescentfluorescent lights so a smaller light would be ideal. Thanks for the advice! I won't remove any more leaves for now, until I learn more.
Lightdims are pretty convenient. I got them from ThinkGeek like 4 or 5 years ago, but you can get them on Amazon too.
$5 seems like a lot for basically some stickers, but they work so well, and I've yet to run out. I really like it dark when I sleep, so these are a must.
This is exactly what you need but it looks like Phillips isn't selling it anymore - Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit (2 A19 Bulbs, 1 Bridge, and 1 Dimmer Switch).
The good news is if you are willing to roll the dice on a refurbished set you can get it for $80.
Right now I'm using a cheap digital timer and a daylight spectrum bulb (http://www.verilux.com/full-spectrum-lightbulbs/compact-fluorescent-cfl/). It works well, but will look into these dimmable ones.
There are standard E27 screw in RGB LED bulbs that have wifi/bluetooth support and color/brightness fading for ~$35 on aliexpress. But I can't find any which give examples of timers and if they support dimming or just on/off times in the software.
Edit: they only support on/off. This kit advertises color shift on wake but its not cheap ($200) http://www.amazon.com/Philips-431643-Personal-Wireless-Frustration/dp/B00BSN8DN4/ref=pd_cp_hi_2
Amazon has both - LIFX and Philips Hue
I know the Hue bulbs require a "hub" to connect to a router, but LIFX don't. I also see these at like Best Buy and Home Depot.
I know you said you don't want to tape dark paper over the light, but this might be a slightly more elegant solution, in the absence of actually controlling the LED:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WSN8PK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use these for a variety of electronics, including power buttons that light up, and they work extremely well. They claim to peel off cleanly too - thought I haven't tried it.
If you don't want total light blockage, the company also makes a version that allows for some light transmission:
https://www.amazon.com/LightDims-Original-Strength-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B01BZBBITE/ref=pd_bxgy_60_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=GMAM6WEKTYVHV0C99B0F&th=1

Get some smart bulbs! I have some that can put out the white light as well as the yellow light to help wind down before bed. They can be controlled with an app and you can set them to turn on or off at a certain time and link up to the sunrise/sunset. You can get ones that are multicolored as well. Below are some links:
TP-Link
Phillips Hue
In my experience you can usually find a 4 pack on sale for cheaper than buying 4 individual bulbs or even 2 2-packs.
Currently on Amazon a single bulb is $46.95 ($187.80) & the 2-pack is currently $89.99 ($179.98).
A 4-pack with the hub (which you could eBay or save for future use) is currently running $180.16 which is actually more expensive than I have seen in a few months. Lately they have been around $160 (I actually paid $146 in June).
So with the current pricing on a 4-pack you get an extra hub for .18¢ . IMO, a 4 pack is usually the way to go.
EDIT: I just found a deal on Amazon for 2-pack starter kits for $77.93 ($155.86). You will have 2 extra hubs though but that seems to be the best deal for 4 bulbs right now.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1J5QC7?tag=slickdeals&ascsubtag=963c19a4bdcb11e996889ae98ab22c260INT
I bought a pack of these, just for that purpose. Some companies can't help themselves with the blue LEDs.
Great looking system, hope you're enjoying it.
You could try something like lightdims. Kind of pricey, but it is basically tinted stickers that you can choose a level and stick it over LEDs. Pretty hard to notice on black.
https://www.amazon.ca/LightDims-Black-Out-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B009WSN8PK/
I stick it on my leds so they are dim at night and the shapes provided fit a large variety of leds.
The XLS DriveCore 2 series amps look pretty good for a professional amplifier. The backlight can be disabled in the menu which just leaves two indicator lights that can easily be covered by electrical tape. The Crown K2is a little dated now but has a clean look.
These might also help: https://www.amazon.com/LIGHTDIMS-LD002-LightDims-Black-Edition/dp/B009WSN8PK
Great deal! Thank you! Don't forget this deal is still going as well, for $25 extra, you get one more bulb:

Awesome! Just yesterday I ordered this one, which sadly is not quite as powerful as yours, but reviewers describe it as "the size of my head" and "the light of the universe", and someone posted a great picture for scale, so yeah I'm expecting a light bulb about the size of a suitcase nuke.
What kind of reflector did you get? I was planning to just try and wedge this into a floor-standing lamp I have (where the socket at the top points upward, and sits in a bowl)
I bought these smart LED bulbs the other day and they have been awesome. I plan on buying more for sure.

First off, check out this deal today if you want a cheap smart bulb.
$3 off with code "30ELEMENT"
Secondly, if you want dimmers, you're not really gonna find them cheaply so my experience goes.
Now, if you want motion detection, contact sensors, or buttons to activate thing I definitely recommend xiaomi brand devices. They're cheap compared to everything else and (anecdotally) I've never had any problems with them.
I'm in the process of wrapping up my new reloading bench. I'm using this kit from Amazon. If you flip through the user-submitted photos you can see a few people who are reloading with it, as well as all sorts of different ideas for configurations.
Given my space constraints I made mine 6x2'. Conveniently that means one 4x8' sheet of plywood gave me enough for two shelves plus two smaller middle shelves. It took me about an hour to cut the wood and put together the workbench. I had Home Depot cut the plywood for me but cut all the 2x4s myself. Total cost for the kit, all the wood, pegboard, some matte poly, and a paint brush is right around $200.
My upper shelves aren't done yet but will be 4' wide to support a nice big piece of white pegboard. I've ordered an LED shop light for lighting.
Even though I just have the lower part done it's awesome. Way way way sturdier than the crappy-ass "workbench" I had from Harbor Freight before.
I'll post pictures once the bench is done and the 550B is mounted to it, likely Saturday.
All in, it costs about $800. Broken down by cost:
Thanks for the reply.

So to understand, I would be best off getting this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R1NMLL4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
And then supplementing it with this and any other Hue products I decide to add?

Looks as though the hub connects to my router so I'm assuming I can identify lights individually in order to have them spread around the house and do different things?
Hi friends! I'm looking at these lights for my collection. This is my first time playing with grow lights, so any insight or advice is greatly appreciated!
If anyone has CFL Black lights that would be superior due to the lower power consumption. Hooking up 5x60W standard black light bulbs will draw significantly more power than a 20W or 13W CFL bulb.
Something like this would be best: http://www.amazon.com/American-Black-Light-Fixture-Black-24BLB/dp/B0002F5544/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1465131591&sr=8-4&keywords=black+light
It should be safe to remove, assuming you can do it without damaging anything nearby.
With that said, tape or paint is a better option IMO. If you're precise about it, you should be able to cover the LED without also covering the IR receiver. There's even special-purpose tape available out there like this: https://www.amazon.com/LightDims-Original-Strength-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B009WSJNCW
if you really want something that works, I bought this from amazon to find cat pee. works really well (see comments on amazon), cord is a bit short but other than that it's great. 20 bucks.
You could get a bulb like this:
SYLVANIA LIGHTIFY by Osram - Smart Home LED Light Bulb, 60W, Tunable White, A19, Works with Amazon Alexa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R3ID2BG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_B6UBybCDCHY73
Almost all of them I see are only 60 watts though. Is that bright enough?
Well, with normal RGBs it would be a virtual button in your PC you need to press.
If you want a physical button you can get something like this which comes with a remote. For changing to super saiyan it would be two button presses though, one for the color to yellow and one to set it to flicker/breathing.
This starter kit seems the best way to go, unless you want to go with white.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1J5QC7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Here, you get 2 bulbs and a hub.
Just the hub is about $48, so the bulbs are more like $25 each.
Or you could go with https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Hue-Equivalent-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B06Y3QXSGX/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=hue+kit&qid=1550434393&s=hi&sr=1-12, three bulbs and a hub.
Or, check out your local Bed Bath and Beyond and see if they still have any on clearance.
You are correct, it does need a hub. /u/Wintonson you can buy the bulbs in a kit with the hub or you can buy the hub standalone. I have some of these and they work pretty great for my purposes. There is an API so if you’re a coder you can control them through code, some applications such as f.lux are compatible, you can control them with Apple HomeKit/from your phone, etc.
Do note that they’re not all RGB. They also sell ones which are shades of white only. You need the White + Color “Ambiance” ones to do like the OP. The one you linked as well as the ones I linked are the right kind.
The Echo Plus (2nd Gen at least) can also work as a hub for them, so if you happen to have that anyway then you don’t need the standalone hub, but I don’t have one and can’t speak towards how well that works.
Super low energy population. Coming from Florida, this is terrible. I have 5 70 watt compact fluorescent lights (300 equivalent) in my living room that I use to help with the dark (heh, they're not too compact). It's like a Latvia joke. Very dark. Very cold.
I haven't experienced any talk of Trump at all, except to bash him. The people around the workplace that can vote are extremely interested in Bernie...and we have a large amount of people here on H1-Bs. Hurts the salary and opportunities, methinks.
I'm biding my time until I can be disconnected from the northwest...it's a pretty place, but the weather, and most of the people, really are low energy.
Anything with a 5500k (kelvin temp) is considered a daylight bulb, they are AMAZING for doing makeup! I got the bulbs for my house at Home Depot and Lowes, but here's an Amazon Link to a 4 pack! :)
All the lights used a part of a Philips Hue system. There is a bulb in the lamp, two bloom lights for the wall, and a Hue Lightstrip inside the PC. They are controllable from my phone/pc. They are RGB, and the Hue system allows for some pretty fun colors!
Quick question, does this bulb work with the stick you recommended? In the description it says "Bulbs are also compatible with the Wink smart hub. These may work with other Zigbee HA 1.2.1 compliant hubs". No idea what "HA 1.2.1 compliant" means.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, sorta new to this.

Black light usually refers to a light that puts out a lot of ultraviolet and not a lot of visible light. Certain substances fluoresce under UV light, and rave organizers seem to make use of it a lot. It was very popular in the 70s, and has recently made a comeback in the PC modder's scene. Here's a link. Does that help?
I personally love these things for annoyingly bright LEDs https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WSJNCW/

I totally get it. When I had less budget I bought regular old clip lights and a couple of really high lumen bulbs, just enough for a couple of plants (more if you have only small plants, which is mostly what my collection consists of now.) Here's my old setup, you can just see the clip and how close I put super needy plants. Used
this light.
Just bought these at a recommendation from ewwmayo on gardenweb, wonderful so far. If your semps are still alive you can try putting them out now, more likely to survive in cold than no light.
This is the current best item on the market.
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-431643-Personal-Wireless-Frustration/dp/B00BSN8DN4
Works with a lot of major control companies and also IFTTT support. Open api etc etc.
I'm sure black tape is still nice to carry, but there are several lines of stickers (or static stick-ons) for the express purpose of dimming or blocking LEDs. I've used the 80% LightDims around my entertainment setup and been happy. Another company sells sheets so you can cut custom shapes. I saw both on Amazon.
Go on Amazon and look for a "Blacklight". It's literally the same thing as those lights you saw. They have been called blacklights forever but they are UV lights. This one is like the one I have had for like almost 20 years. Don't use it anymore really, but it still works.
I use a similar cheap lighting kit like the ones you posted. I replaced the stock bulbs with more powerful ones.
It seems to work okay for my YouTube videos. I shot these with the lighting kit..
I would use these one of these bulbs 105 watt 5000k and 105 watt 6000k.I have ordered both they work excellent and their cheap. The 6000k for some reason are alot larger, they both seem to work great. Here's the comparison, those are my bulbs. You can put those 1 inch away and they wont burn. That pepper plant i plan to keep inside under the grow lights the plants only 2.5 weeks old and has buds. Everything in there i started from seed expect the cactus. The gallery wont save so just dont delete it please.
I understand. So if I can find a light with high kelvins and high lumens then it should be good right? I'm considering both of these. Which one do you think would work better?

Thank you! Here's the link to the lights I'm using 4 Packs T8 LED Light Tube, 2FT 20W,2400lm, 6500K Cool White Clear Cover,Dual V-Shape,Linkable Integrated Fixture,2Ft LED Shop Light for Cabinet Lights Garage,Warehouse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L1QJTFL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nxrKDbH90MNW3
I have a wide variety of succulents and I'm worried about how to make sure they get the right amount of light. I have IDs for about 2/3rds of my 50 plants. My main worry is my split rock collection and my lithops since they're my favorites, but I really want everyone to make it through winter. Should I get everyone ID'd and try to find more specific instructions?
We're in the middle of moving but don't have a place yet so I'm not sure how much natural light I'll have to work with, especially as it gets colder and keeping blinds/curtains drawn will be necessary. Right now I have a not-very-good temporary purple grow light set up just to try and help them make it through. After we move I'm planning on getting shelving and proper lights.
Based on a recommendation I'm looking at this shelving and these lights. Will those be enough for a wide variety of succulents if they can't get much natural light?
It may be worth it to just get a small grow light. I've been using this bulb in a regular desk lamp for the past 4 years. It's not going to get the same results as a larger, brighter one, but it should be good enough to keep a small number of plants from getting leggy.
LEDs require a specific current, not a specific voltage. I know that sounds odd, but these COB LEDs will continue to consume current until they burn out, so they need a constant current driver in order to regulate the current that's delivered to them. The actual voltage that is delivered can vary, but it's typically somewhere between 12V and 48V.
I have the materials to build just such a setup, but I've read that the Cree COB LEDs I have don't put out a very good light spectrum for plants. I've got the goods, though, so we'll see how it works out.
While I'm talking about it, here are the light sources I have:
Curious to see how the LEDs compare. FWIW, the scotch bonnet plant I have underneath the Apollo 24W R/B LED has a pronounced preference for the 400W MH that is orthogonally located about five feet away.
Hey! I have a completely indoor Meyer as well next to a window that doesn't get a lot of light. I use an Agrosun CFL bulb in one of those cheap shop clip lights on a 12 hr timer. Works great, tree has produced multiple rounds of lemons. I have the bulb about 1 foot above the center of the tree.
http://www.amazon.com/AGROSUN-CFL-32W-Equivalent-160W/dp/B0055F4VB4
$49 on amazon. I thought about, but the Lightstrip Plus seems so much more versitle. Brighter, better whites, dimmer at low settings, and extendible.

I've been using these for some time now. Very reliable & pretty cheap. You will need some kind of smart hub though.
Prices may have changed since your comment but here's what I see right now:
Color bulbs were $50 a piece a la carte not long ago, and they're $32 on Amazon right now. The color starter kit with 3 bulbs has been $180-200 but is $150 right now.
(50-32) ~= (200-150) / 3 so this seems inline

Now that Amazon has built-in a Hue compatible hub into the new Echo, you can start using Hue bulbs without buying the Phillips hub. Maybe other IoT voice hubs will do this too. So I think the hub is trending downward for basic users. Although I don't think the mini hubs like Echo Dot have it, so maybe not.
Here are some of the LED cover stickers they make for reducing the brightness of these lights.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with this company or amazon. :)
This has been driving me nuts.
I bought a pack of these on Amazon and they have changed my life. There is one that fits perfectly over the button, and it can also be removed and re-stuck repeatedly (if you want to play with your settings).

Google "hue lights competitor" to do your own further research.
Looks like there's these Lumen bulbs, but honestly if you want a color-changing lightbulb that you can control from your phone Philips seems to be on point with hue.
Also, why are you capitalizing hue? Everywhere on their site it's all lowercase. Same with amazon.
Well the generation 1 light strip is cheaper http://amzn.to/2hRNdS3 and for what you want to do may be a better option.
I went the opposite where I cut off the power supply and the light strip and soldered on a larger power supply 5amp and added a 5050 light strip at 4m long seemed to work OK.
I I wanted was the ZigBee controllers.
Here is a fls after market controller http://amzn.to/2j5bQXw that will also work with the Philip hues

I use a product called LightDims to help reduce LED glare around my house, they have a blackout series (Amazon Link) which may fit the camera and look a bit cleaner than electrical tape.
I bought these stickers made for blocking LED's. Tape would work fine, but I like the aesthetic solution.
If you have a costco membership these lights periodically go on sale for $25-30 depending on what part of the country you live in. I use them to light my garage where I do most of my work, huge difference and especially if you care about how colors actually might look under non dark incandescent situations.

I'm not the person you replied to, but I've been using the older version of these for about two years. Alexa integration was added about 8 months ago, if I remember right.
This is the version I have, and it works just like voice commands for hue or LIFX.
They work with LED strips like this one which aren't as nice as the Hue strips, but are considerably cheaper.
Currently $9.99 but they were $8.99 at some point recently.

If you're interested in the color changing feature of the bulbs, take a look at the Osram RGBW bulbs, or the Osram Tunable White bulbs (if you're okay just adjusting color temperature and not getting funky with it).
Same basic functionality, much cheaper, and they connect just fine to a Wink hub without needing the Osram Bridge.

Of course, you might want to get the "White" variety...

This is the exact one I have. Absolutely love it
My craziest fetish is .. Being choked. God just having hands or something tightening around my neck as I slowly start getting closer and closer to orgasm. This blacklight is exactly 10$ and good for sexy times. or this for when I am going down on Austin. <3

However it depends on the type of LEDs you use. Mine are cheap RGBW, so they work with this controller. RGBWW would need something like this:

What exactly is the issue with yours? Did you ensure they're cloud connected via the magichome app and not just in AP mode?
Ok, I'll tell you what you can do to get a few oz's of shroomy delight for yourself for a measly ~$150.
This is going to be my take on growing, or in other words - pofs' tek. Yea...I like the sound of that. Except it's not going to be very detailed.
Pofs' Tek - A guide for the partially lazy
So, basically, I cut out a few steps - that of making your own substrate and and sterilizing it and prepping a bunch of jars and grain spawn. I use Out-Grow's bulk supplies package which consists of 4 quart jars of sterilized rye grain, and 4 lbs of compost (manure-based substrate) and it costs $35 + shipping which was $15 for me for a total of $50
Then I used a 13.5qt clear bin I bought from amazon made by Iris, which cost $5/ea + $4 shipping (which is a steal in bulk, but you'll only need 1 for this guide) which will cost $9, or $59 total
I did this inside so I used a Timer($7), a Lamp Cord ($9), and a 6500k cfl ($8) for a total of $24 on this part (which can be replaced by sunlight if you have a room with natural lighting) and a total of $83
I used spores from lilshopofspores.com - b+ to be specific. I've switched to thehawkeye.com's spores since, because they are cheaper and come with a lot more spores inside the syringe. You'll run around $15-$30 for spores no matter where you get em and bring the total to $113 assuming $30 for syringe and shipping.
I also bought Polyfill ($7) for a total of $120 bare minimum start price.
And now you have all of the essentials.
I'll write the growing process later.
I don't have the box anymore but I'm fairly confident this is close to what I have.
Light Dims work pretty darn well for blinding LEDs
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WSJNCW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This thing might help dim that annoying light, they work pretty well.
I got a pack of these LED-dimming stickers and put one on every device in the house. It has been glorious.
https://www.amazon.com/LightDims-Original-Strength-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B009WSJNCW
There are several companies (Phillips,Belkin, etc.) that sell light bulbs or light switches that can be controlled via iPhone/Android apps.
Ex:
http://www.amazon.com/WeMo-Control-Anywhere-Automation-Smartphones/dp/B00DGEGJ02
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-431643-Personal-Wireless-Frustration/dp/B00BSN8DN4
On the app side, I recommend taking the time to try out Google Music or another music app in favor of the stock Touchwiz app. Also, remember that smaller Widget sizes are available and to try live wallpapers if thats your thing (they do eat battery life though).
I'm using Philips Hue light bulbs. They have worked great for me so far.
I've used the HUE and the DeepCool RGB 350 (which both items you linked seem to be rebrands of) and actually prefer the DeepCool, even though it's cheaper.
The sticking is better (magnetic), the lights are brighter, and you get two short strips instead of one super long one making it easier to find places inside your case. Only downside is that you're stuck with the pre-set colors on the remote, but they have most bases covered with those.

It already has a molex connector and they're magnetic, super quick install
Your best bet is the starter pack that comes with the hub and three bulbs. Usually around
$180-$190. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BSN8DN4/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_u-Wnub10414EF
One bulb usually ranges between $50 and $60 and I'm not sure of the hub. I'm on mobile and only had time for a quick look. I can get back to you.
What I would do is pick up some daylight CFL or LED bulbs (should be under $20 total) so you can get the closest to natural light and then focus on bouncing the light or diffusing it.
Example CFL bulbs: http://www.amazon.com/EcoSmart-Equivalent-Spiral-Daylight-4-Pack/dp/B0042UN1U0
Then, put them in lamps that you can direct towards your work area (clip-on flexible neck lamps like this) and try this method of diffusing the light.
Or these, but black electrical tape is cheaper, true.
http://www.amazon.com/LightDims-793573834232-Original-Strength/dp/B009WSJNCW
I suggest some LightDims to solve the issue. Apparently they are stickers that you can use to dim bright leds.

Thanks. It happened because I took them inside last fall over winter since i'm in an area that freezes in winter. I had a grow light over them almost 24/7 until two weeks ago when I brought all my plants back outside.
The grow light I have is a cheap one however. Some of my plants grow very well under it and others don't, like the ones in this example. Here's the light for anyone curious - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKKU7SA
Next year when I bring them inside I'm thinking about getting one of those Apollo grow lights.
Only reason I asked if they are etiolated is that I've seen some plants that look kind of like echeveria actually be plants that naturally grow long and spindly, so didn't want to jump the gun and chop off their heads.
On Ledenet's site, they sell the Milight controllers. But they link to another one in the corner that's on Aliexpress, so maybe some of those?
There's also this controller which has middling reviews, but seems to fit in with what you were saying.
A19 is the right type of bulb for a standard light. There are other types like the BR30 or GU10 which have specialty purposes or sockets, but A19 is likely what you want.
Then there are white bulbs and color bulbs.
Links to both on Amazon for comparison:
White
Color
No worries! Have you looked in to this type of bulb:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055F4VB4/ref=asc_df_B0055F4VB45433815/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B0055F4VB4&linkCode=df0&hvadid=194944285088&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13743728693007559636&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028723&hvtargid=pla-314457156211
I have a pack sitting in my closet right now in case my leds end up not being enough and I notice signs of etiolation. You can fit in a desk lamp or a clamp lamp. I don’t know how bright they are though, haven’t plugged any in. But I’ve heard good reviews on here about them.
These work well. But I do wish they offered a logo-less version, at the least, no logo on the lid.
Lake is still cold from the mild summer, this winter will be worse.
I bought a humongus all-spectrum lightbulb, it's like 10 inches tall, full spectrum, and installed it in my closet where I have my computer setup. I'm basically doing light therapy while working on computer stuffs.
http://www.amazon.com/Full-Spectrum-Light-Bulb-Fluorescent/dp/B0019HZQPM/ref=pd_bia_nav_t_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1E39YCJY8MV9PGTY3CWN
I also removed all my 100% cotton items from my wardrobe and put them away for storage, so I don't accidentally go out in something that will soak up sweat/rain/melted snow in the -5 degree 30 mph winds.
I also pulled out all my cold temp gear and fixed any holes.
I bubble wrapped and card boarded my windows, caulked the seams (removable) and plastic wrapped them, tight as a drum, and nailed a fleece blanket over them, and then a heavy duty curtain to hide it all. I also sealed my door cracks with foam tape. I also got a cool touch humidifier and strapped a high grade furnace filter to the back of a box fan. I have a highly controlled environment in my bedroom, even with the house thermostat set to 69, my room is a constant 80 degrees, about 50% humidity and air filtered.
I got loads of food in the basement, and I plan to make a market trip once a month and stock up and just keep the perishables in coolers in the airlock/mudroom (which is currently below freezing).
This is my 3rd Chicago winter, being from Los Angeles I was so under prepared. I'm looking forward to surviving this one in style.
agreed, just bought DeepCool brand LED's for my pc just last week. only $20 and took 3 minutes to setup.

What worked really well for me is the LED strips are magnetic so no paste or tape required. Hooked up to a 4-pin Molex and that was it.
Or would you go this route: Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit (2 A19 Bulbs, 1 Bridge, and 1 Dimmer Switch, Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F6T4R80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VIMaAb3P2AKD5
Get better bulbs.
6500k photography bulbs such as these (or any others on amazon):
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089Q1FWE/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474509455&sr=sr-1&keywords=6500k+bulb
They use 45w but are the equivalent of a 200W light bulb in brightness. The 4 of them will drown out any yellow light.
There are also these if you want brighter:
https://www.amazon.com/Photography-Fluorescent-Spectrum-LimoStudio-LMS121/dp/B005FRCUHY/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1474509455&sr=8-6&keywords=6500k+bulb
Each one if the equivalent of a 400w light bulb.
Or if you don't want to spend that, go to walmart and buy the 100w daylight equivalent fluorescent. They should be 5500k or 6500k
Have a nearby outlet or space for a large UPS? Philips also makes a LED strip which works with that wireless switch. Recharging the UPS would get a little annoying though so an outlet would be best.
As others have pointed out, black electrical tape - but if you wan't something a bit cleaner looking::
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WSN8PK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
"LightDim" Black-Out stickers. Clean looking.
Is this 4w, 800l, 5000k CFL lightbulb good for my bathroom that receives zero natural light? There are no shades on the lights, so the bulb's light would be naked - I don't know if that makes sense hah.
I use these for stuff like that. Looks a lot cleaner than electrical tape.
They were live yesterday when I posted that on Amazon. It looks like everything is back to normal price, except for the A10 color bulbs. Those are still at $40 each.
https://smile.amazon.com/Philips-Generation-Equivalent-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01M9AU8MB/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1511380444&sr=8-6&keywords=philips+hue
I got a full-spectrum daylight-simulating CFL light bulb from Amazon a few years ago and it's great. Sunlamps for SAD were like $70 when I checked - those bulbs are $5 each and can be used in regular lamps. Here's an even cheaper version.
You are looking for the
Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F6T4R80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_imaAybKVJN7RZ
I don't think that there was ever a new gen for the white ambiance bulbs. Gen 3 refers to the improved greens and blues in the color bulbs. If you don't need the hue dimmer in the kit above, you can probably buy a hue bridge at a discount on ebay/craigslist and then buy the bulbs separately ($30 each) instead.
Controller : LEDENET Smart WiFi LED Controller 5 Channels Control
Cost : $16.99

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DY56N8U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It comes with a foam cover thing but it isnt as robust as a full deadcat thing for wind.
For relatively cheap lighting get a couple of these bulbs http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019HZQPM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And a couple of these softbox fixtures (I like these because they set up and fold up really fast unlike others) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019HZQPM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Some cheap lighting stands, and one of those $35 battery powered LED lights to mount on camera or use as a hair light.
Since it's just the bathroom, I'd suggest the Sengled Element Classic A19
https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-E11-G13W-Equivalent-Assistant-SmartThings/dp/B01N7I4X94/ref=sr_1_5?crid=6MBO1NJMLL8C&keywords=sengled+element+classic+a19&qid=1550421439&s=gateway&sprefix=sengled+element%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-5
It's even cheaper when it's on sale going as low as 8-10 bucks. Works with SmartThings, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Wink.
I tried searching whether it compliant with California light efficiency regulations but couldn't find anything in the affirmative or negative, hopefully it's good for Cali.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7I4X94/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
they're $8/bulb right now on amazon but i often see 3 packs for like $20 on sale. I bought 8 of them about 2 months ago and so far no problem. They don't work as a zigbee repeater just FYI.
Are these good lights? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07L1QJTFL/ref=psdcmw_2314207011_t1_B07N2CPTJJ
You bet! These are in the spectrum for growth.
I had a single light bulb lighting my 3 car garage. I tapped that junction box and ran 4 outlets off that switch, and installed 4 of these shop lights in in my garage (bought them at Costco for much cheaper). Holy Brightness!
Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal for someone just starting out?

I can't decide if I want to get dot and 2 bulbs or the 3 with the Hue Bridge.
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 10W Equivalent LED Smart Light Bulb Starter Kit, 2 A19 Bulbs and 1 Bridge, Works with Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D1J5QC7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_y4c-Bb4QRY7YD
And a few others with an echo
You're probably looking for something like this, which has been a lifesaver for me. There's also variations that don't block all the light but dims it significantly.
Costco has some cheap LED shop lights. For $30 each, they're excellent!
Edit: If Costco isn't an option, Amazon has them, but they're more expensive.
The price usually and it will advertise as old version. Here is one on Amazon
The new model has slightly better color saturation and goes for $90 while the old one goes for $49
Philips Website VS Amazon for Philips Hue bulbs.
On the Philips Website I find:
http://www2.meethue.com/en-us/p/hue-white-and-color-ambiance-single-bulb-e26/046677464486
And on Amazon I find:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Generation-Equivalent-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01M9AU8MB/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1511201049&sr=1-5&keywords=philips+hue+e26
The model numbers vary by 1. 464486 vs 464487
The descriptions are similar, but not the same.
On the philips website it says nothing about 3rd generation.
Philips calls it an E26 bulb and Amazon calls it an A19 bulb.
Philips talks about integration with Nest, Amazon talks about integration with Echo.
Are they actually the same thing? I'm a little confused at the difference.
where did you buy the lightbulb? Maybe this is the solution to my problem of wanting to buy the Hue system but being too cheap to commit.
so some one made this using this case and used some sort of black light like this.
I like LightDims. There's also a silver version that would probably work for Schiit gear.
Oh. Maybe you could try using something like this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009WSJNCW
I have used a similar item like these before http://www.amazon.com/LightDims-1002-Black-Out-Edition/dp/B009WSN8PK
Aesthetics are going to be the deciding factor on what you end up using because i cant find a single post or article on someone figuring out how to turn it off. (I assume its tied into the screen)
The ones I used were like this https://www.amazon.com/Feit-917972-Electric-Utility-Light/dp/B00LFAY5SM
I see them on sale fairly often for about $30.
You could try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/LEDENET-Smart-Controller-Channels-Control/dp/B01DY56N8U
Depends what LEDs you get. Some, like this item on amazon, plug into your power supply and not the MOBO
I've done what you have suggested and the bridge shows no error. I have then re-added a modified version of the config.json file by removing the accessory that I was trying to add in the first place, this one:
{
"accessory": "MagicHome",
"name": "Desk Lamp",
"ip": "192.168.1.111",
"setup": "RGBW",
"purewhite": false
},
This is the accessory that I want to add https://www.amazon.ca/LEDENET-Smart-Controller-Channels-Control/dp/B01DY56N8U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549919639&sr=8-1&keywords=5+channel+rgbww+wifi+controller
I have relaunched homebridge and now all the other accessories work within HomeKit https://photos.app.goo.gl/DYH1E5hHLnJoAihB8. I don't understand why it works without the accessory above in the config.json file. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help once again!
It seems to only be with Canadian Amazon, the U.S. Amazon has it for ~$20 cheaper than anywhere else- http://www.amazon.com/Philips-431643-Personal-Wireless-Frustration/dp/B00BSN8DN4.
Their is only one seller for it on Amazon.ca, so that plays a big role in the cost.
http://www.amazon.com/LightDims-793573834232-Original-Strength%C2%AE/dp/B009WSJNCW
These are kinda cool if you still want to have just a tiny bit of light. Only 6 bucks.
Get the https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DY56N8U/ RGBW controller with any RGBW light strip. The controller will soon be supported in Home Assistant.
I'm sure there are much cheaper alternatives. Check this one out https://www.amazon.com/DeepCool-RGB350-Color-LED-Strips/dp/B01F3C6VSO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1482426096&sr=1-1&keywords=deepcool+rgb+350
Amazon has a deal for a 3 color bulb starter pack with a hub for $99, it's a solid deal and picked one up myself.

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Starter-HomeKit-Assistant/dp/B07R1NMLL4
As others have said the Sengled are good. Just under $10 a white bulb. They did have sale the other day where a 4 pack was like $27
Cheapest ones I see are these https://smile.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-74283-Dimmable-Equivalent-SmartThings/dp/B0727WZ3L2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1538587598&sr=8-4&keywords=sylvania+smart
But because of the bad reviews I would spend the extra $2 and get these https://smile.amazon.com/Element-Classic-Sengled-Assistant-SmartThings/dp/B01N7I4X94/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1538587647&sr=1-3&keywords=Sengled&dpID=31t581tsOhL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

.... though those are all just Amazon prices. Maybe they are just the ones pricing high.
I use these, https://www.amazon.com/LightDims-Black-Out-Electronics-Appliances/dp/B009WSN8PK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482892646&sr=8-1&keywords=led+cover
Works well and you can barely tell it's on there. You get some extras too.
