Hey, advanced welcome to California :) Since I'm from Cali, I can tell you this right now: It can get REAAAAALLLLYYYY HOOOOTTTT!!! The other night before my job interview, I actually couldn't sleep because I felt like I was in a sauna and I was melting all night long! (Fortunately, I got hired lol)

Anyway, I'm actually thinking of getting something like this -> a portable air conditioner :D

It's pretty affordable I think if you consider how much misery it would save you from :D Really, the only thing I hate about California is the HEAT... you know there's a terrible heat wave when the ambulances are visiting my neighborhood almost everyday due to senior citizens who couldn't take the heat anymore.

Yep, so please, really take the heat issue of California seriously. You don't want to be experiencing it and have no way of saving yourself.

If the place you're going to live in has proper air conditioning, then good! But if not, then definitely get this one.

I also suggest ANYTHING at all that would help you fight heat in case you don't have an air conditioner. Even an electric fan is useless when the air it spews out is hot. That's how I suffered the other night X_X

So there we go, welcome to California and I hope you'll have fun here :D There are lots of beautiful places in California! Be sure to check out Disney Land in Anaheim, Universal Studios somewhere (I forgot), and Knott's Berry Farm (in Buena Park - this is a city, not a park lol!!!) :D

Ok one last reminder: Please take the heat issue seriously, that's all I can really warn you about California lol :)

Ooops I almost forgot, if you ever think that my advice is useful to you, well I don't really have anything under $5 on my wish list, but I do have a friend whom I want to cheer up (and my friend has $5 and less items), if possible, I'd like to give my win to my friend :) Thank you very much and enjoy California (just not the heat) :D

No problem.

Yes the PC would be relatively quiet. PCs these days aren't very loud anymore. Especially when you buy quality cases. The stock fans on them are not super terrible.

How-ever, often when the fans have to spin quicker because tempatures rise up, these fans can become hearable. So for my personal PC I bought a lot of Noctua's. I mostly suggest people to keep the stock fans and if they find them to loud, buy aftermarket later. As for my suggestion, I got an aftermarket fan because the stock fan got white blades and would missmatch with the black and red theme we got going. If you want me to suggest a full setup of aftermarket fans because you just want the silence, let me know and I can do this.

Leaks in watercooling is always the scary part for people when they have no experience with it. For all in one watercoolers. This happens far less frequently. I actually don't have numbers of it, but my guess would be that around 0,001% of the sold units would have leakage.

For custom watercooling setups. They always do a leak test for a long amount of time. Note that this person got very bad tubing runs.

Now for my suggest cooler, this is actually pretty close to a custom watercooling setup. It got a fill port and you can remove the tubing and even add a block for your GPU to cool that with water as well. So if you really are afraid of leaks, I would just suggest to install the cooler. Place some kitchen paper on all the parts where it can leak (so the connections) and let it run for about 6+ hours with regular checking. How-ever the most important part is the first minute.

Installing an AIO is actually a lot simpler compared to most air coolers. So for a first time builder, it's a great option. I did not know that you were a firs time builder, so I will give you a few helpful guides.

---

As for peripherals. Great! I would need to know the budget, we got about £150 left from the PC budget. As for the rest, I would need to know a few things.

Peripherals are all very hard to suggest, if we don't have enough information. There are a lot of things we need to know before we can suggest the right setup. I assume we have enough budget for a mechanical keyboard. But if not, then the other parts are still important.

  • Mouse: How do you grip the mouse? How many buttons do you want? How big is your hand? Are you left or right handed?
  • Keyboard: I recommend to go read about Mechanical Keyboards switch types first. Then after you know wich switch would be for you, you can give me that information. Then my other questions would be, do you want a TenKeyLess? Basicly a smaller keyboard. If you don't want a TKL, do you want any "macro keys"?
  • Headphones/Speakers: What music do you listen? Where will you sit when using the headphones, will it be in a loud room? Will you be on your own? Do you need a microphone?

    ---

Some video's that will help you with the build!

    ---

  • How to build a PC: Here. Completely ignore the parts that he chose. I actually was very surprised at that date when he came with those products, as I don't think it's optimized well and the GPU could've been a lot better. Anyway, ignore it! Building a PC is basicly the same, the wires did not change and the process is not changed either. You can skip the stock intel CPU cooler part and instantly install the aftermarket CPU cooler. This is just easier for you so you don't have to clean the thermal paste later. Wich would cost you another £/$/€10 or so. How-ever be careful with the watercooler. If you don't feel comfortable with it, then buy this & this to be able to clean the thermal paste and install the stock cooler for basic testing.
  • How to overclock my CPU: Basicly pretty much this. Very solid and simple to follow guide. This is done with an Asus board so it will be slightly different with our motherboard. Slightly different names and they are often on other places, etc.
  • How to overclock your GPU: Hey guys, this is Austin! It really is very easy these days. I highly suggest to run 10-15 minutes stress tests in between changing to a higher frequency. After you hit crashes and/or artifacts. I sugges to go down 2 steps or at least 10mhz on the core clock and 25/50 on the memory. Then do a full +6 hour stress test at least.

    ---

Hope this helps, if you still have questions, let me know and i'll do my best to answer this.

I've got this unit: Whynter 14000 BTU

Area: ~750sqft

Dual hose unit, and I keep a blanket wrapped around the hot air hose for a little insulation.

No real other advice. My unit is probably overkill for a smaller place or a single room, but the fact that it can cool my bedroom at the far end of the house is a huge plus.

This thing weighs a ton but it rolls super super easy. I would not get it to bring up and down stairs though.

Don't regret it at all :)

u/Blueman216 · 2 pointsr/TruckCampers

I don't have a set up....yet. I've been looking at a lot of stuff to turning my Ranger into an overlanding RV. Mixing different voltage batteries can be a pain in the butt when putting them in series, so you might want to reconsider a 12 volt battery. You can even build lithium setups relatively cheap and custom fit to your bed box.

As for your wiring, you should look into upgrading your wires to a thicker gauge to handle the system load you're going to be putting on it. Looking up electrical systems for car stereo systems really helps give you a grasp as to where to start. Your 12 volt cigarette plugs you're going to have to find, splice, and mount yourself. I warn you it's a pain in the ass as you most likely will burn up a few trying out the system. I learned this the hard way when helping my buddy mount his center console in his S10. You can find brackets to match the Thule roof rack to mount flexible panels but you can also find roll up panels that plug right into your cigarette lighter. Just face the windshield toward the sun and use the panel like a sun visor.

I'd advise against cutting a hole in your cap roof for a fan. It'd be a thousand times easier to mount a 12v fan inside the cap and open a window. That way you won't have to worry about a leaky roof. You have to remember that you're only trying to circulate about 90 cubic feet of air; you don't need a huge fan roof fan to do that. If you live in an arid enough region you can always get a personal swamp cooler for those hot summer nights.

Charge controllers and and monitors are pretty much whatever you can find. Most of what you see on the internet is DC/AC and not DC/DC. A lot of times you can just hook up the panel to the system through a 12v lighter plug and have no worries. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're going to have a super small amp-hour setup like a single battery. But I've seen people just use volt meters that plug into cigarette lighters as their monitors. When they see their voltage drop below 12v, they know to crank the motor and run the alternator for a bit to charge the system.

You should think of panels as a supplemental setup rather than the primary charge source. Your alternator is going to be your main source of charging your batteries until you can plug your system up to a grid. Just be sure your current alternator is going to be able to handle the load of charging multiple batteries. It might be worth looking into getting a high output alternator if your truck doesn't already have it. It's one thing to short yourself on battery capacity, but burning up an alternator is a pretty shitty thing to happen to you.

u/Scotsmania · 3 pointsr/PS4

I use a Compucleaner to clean it that i bought years ago for cleaning my PC which works very well. Datavac is another brand but a bit more expensive. You need to make sure you put a finger on the fan to hold it in place so it doesn't break though as they are strong.

Don't blow into the vents around the sides. The plastic on the top of the PS4 clips off, clean it from the inside so the dust blows out.

Aside from that making sure that it's placed somewhere elevated helps a lot to avoid gathering dust in the first place. Try to avoid having it somewhere like the bottom shelf of a unit close to the floor.

u/Kylista · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

As other posters have mentioned, sometimes if a portable air conditioner doesn't seem like it's working, it's because there isn't enough circulation.

I was in a situation similar to yours, trying to cool down a living area with vaulted ceilings in the summer with a 14,000btu portable AC, and it didn't seem like it was doing shit. It was nice to sit in front of, but 3 feet away it was hot as hell.

The solution was around air circulation. I actually ended up opening a bedroom down the hall and opening a window and putting a box fan in it to blow air out.

2 hours later the living area was pleasantly cool and so was my bedroom, which was a nice bonus.

my AC unit is https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Dual-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC and it works wonderfully.

u/ovirt001 · 1 pointr/homelab

Mine is currently in my laundry room. I've had to deal with heat issues as well but since I live in the west I just stick a swamp cooler in the window during the summer.
A dedicated area would be best but I can definitely understand it being expensive. Maybe you can convince the wife to let you setup one of these?
https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Portable-Conditioner-Frost-ARC-12SD/dp/B003MQBYYU

That may be overkill for your setup. Either way if you do decide to go this route, make sure to get a dual-hose model. The single-hose models are near pointless as they suck air out of the house.

u/Wdeflect · 2 pointsr/SeattleWA

Definitely. My house gets super hot, and being able to bring the AC unit to any room I'm in is a godsend. I got this one (was cheaper last year) and it's worked well for me, at least for one summer! I've read ones with dual hoses are better.

I'm happy to talk over your plans and help out where I'm able. Looking at your comments in this post, I see a couple things that I'd like to point out to you that you can think about.

It sounds like you've already got the shed framed in and your insulated interior space will be around 6'x9', is this correct? I don't love your idea for the tiny 2' space and a 6x6 grow area. You've got too much space for growing, and no space for working. You don't need to be able to get inside your grow chamber and walk around. To maximize yield, you want your grow chamber to be just large enough for the light you are using and the plants you are growing. Let's say you def want to use a 1000 watt MH/HPS- A 4'x6' grow chamber in the rear of the shed would be perfectly sized for that light. That leaves you about 5'x6' for a work space/lung room. You need room to work. You are going to want a chair, a desk, shelves for supplies and space for tools and hardware. A 1000 watt HPS in a 4x6 space will yield 1-2 pounds per grow, and a grow takes 5 months from seed to jar.

Another thing you could do is run two grow chambers, one for flower and one for veg. You could, for example, have a 150 watt 2x4 veg space and a 600 watt 4x4 flower space. This arrangement would yield 10-20 ounces every 10 weeks.

Regardless of how you divide up the space, I think what I might do if I were in your situation is just finish the shed space with no interior walls, and use a tent for the grow chamber. This would give you the flexibility to evolve and adapt your grow shed as you develop your preferred growing technique.

Another thing I wanted to point out to you is that the portable A/C unit you are looking at is no good for growing. That is a single hose unit, and a single hose A/C unit removes air from the living space, and sends it out the exhaust hose. That means you are going to be blowing incredibly dank air out of the exhaust during flower, and you are going to have difficulty keeping your RH under control. You need to use either a window A/C unit, or a dual hose unit.

u/slohcinbeards · 1 pointr/LosAngeles

So I have a wall AC unit in my living/dining room but it's too far from the bedroom and even with creative fan placement, zero cool air gets into the bedroom. In my bedroom there is already a pre-installed hose/vent/hole through the wall underneath the window that the previous tenant placed for their portable unit. However, after some additional research I decided that a dual hose unit was a must, so I think I'm going to end up using the window for the two hoses and NOT this pre-installed hole in the wall. I really wanted to go for a window unit, but decided against it due to my window design - I hope this was the right decision (sigh). I ended up going with this model.

u/Joe503 · 1 pointr/Portland

Just got back from buying one of these portable units from Best Buy. The Washington Square location had about 10 of them in stock, priced at $449 on the floor. Price-matching to Amazon was easy, literally just showed them my phone, bringing the price to $349.

I spent a couple of hours researching models in the $300-$500 range and this one was consistently rated well (#1 selling model on Amazon too).

Hope this helps!

u/shemp420 · 1 pointr/Seattle

I am in a similar apartment. It gets stifling once the days really warm up and thee sun starts setting further to the N. Install some light blocking curtains if you can.

I bought this unit Honeywell MN10CESWW 10,000 BTU Portable A C Which works great in terms of blowing ice cold air. The apartment has a built in hole in the wall for attaching the air hose.

However, even thought the AC unit works great, it just can't keep up with the heat in terms of cooling the entire space. The studio apt was well above 75 for a few months in a row. Sitting in front of the AC fan stream worked well enough to have a comfortable-ish evening after work. I did not install curtains because I didn't want to deal with patching the hardware holes once I move. I might cave and put them in this year though.

u/Mortimer452 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

As explained below, one intake and one exhaust.

Single hose units intake air from the room (which is your cool, conditioned air) and vent outside. While they cool, they're also sucking some cool air from inside your house and blowing it outside.

Dual hose units don't have this problem - both intake and exhaust are performed with outside air, so all your expensive cold air stays inside :)

The one I use in my workshop is a Haier 14,000BTU portable unit, I really like it and it's seen very heavy use. Sorry I can't seem to find it online, it appears to be discontinued. Here's one made by Whynter that has pretty good reviews.

u/zombiescooby · 4 pointsr/Assistance

If you absolutely cannot fix it or put in a board like noted above, why not aim for a less expensive unit like [this one](SPT 8,000BTU Single Hose Portable AC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006YG683C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_X9bvxbA1YBAMV). It's only $240 with prime shipping. It may be easier to find someone to loan you that amount than $500. Good luck!

u/Qeez- · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I have to keep the door closed all the time because of pets and so I can’t really vent air in to the room any other way besides the window and it only opens by like folding outwards vertically if that makes sense. Why wouldn’t something like this A/C unit work to cool the bedroom by hooking it up to the window? I figure that would in turn help help the tent temps lower because I just have a small fan blowing air in through an open vent on the bottom. Also what would be the difference between that and the 2 hose?

u/Spo_0ky · 1 pointr/Calgary

We got this one a few years back, works like a charm and well worth the money, in 30-35C heat it will actually keep the place nice and cool (~500 square foot room)

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0028AYQDC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Luxin · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I read many of your posts in this thread...

  1. Get rid of the mini dehumidifiers and the buckets of damp rid. They do not have enough capacity to help this situation. You need to remove gallons of water per day at first, and maybe for the entire summer. These things will not do that for you.

  2. Can you add another window AC? The AC will remove humidity as well as cool you, while a real dehumidifier will remove humidity but add heat.

  3. An option is one of these if you don't want to install a window unit. This is only an example. You do not want one with a single hose, you want a dual hose unit. Single hose units draw some hear in: https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Portable-Conditioner-Frost-ARC-12SD/dp/B003MQBYYU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500511991&sr=8-3&keywords=portable+air+conditioner+dual+hose

4: If all else fails, get a real dehumidifier. Something like http://www.homedepot.com/p/Frigidaire-70-pt-Dehumidifier-FAD704DWD/206734553. It will add heat but also remove the humidity.

    Good luck!
u/chefandy · 1 pointr/news

I found your solution

They make much cheaper models, but those are really only suited for hot/dry climates. I'm assuming Philly is pretty humid. This unit actually takes the humidity out of the air and evaporates it to cool off the room. It's cheaper than an ac and will work better than 4 fans blowing hot air on you

u/Rainz0412 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

This seems pretty cost effective, I'm going to guess right now and say the room is maybe 8' x 5' x 8' (it has a narrower door on it). So fairly small, almost a closet.

Would one of these really make that much of a difference?

Also this one seems to have the best reviews what do you think?

u/DontForgetWilson · 1 pointr/GoodValue

So I've never purchased a standalone air dehumidifier.

I can vouch for this portable AC doing well(cooling and dehumidifying) for 8 months in Southwest Texas. I never had to drain the thing so the auto evaporate feature worked quite well. Didn't have it in July/August and I'm assuming you're talking about closer to Houston if you're that worried about humidity. The unit didn't break when I had it(moved and no longer needed it so I gave to a family member that did). I believe it is still in use but I have no idea about the proper longevity. Based on the Amazon reviews, I'd guess it wouldn't be a long term solution but in terms of portable ACs it was still the best I could find for Texas.

My guess is someone from Houston/Corpus/Florida will be able to help more on specialized dehumidifiers.

u/Is_anyone_listening · 3 pointsr/AskLosAngeles

you can try returning that AC unit and getting a standing version: http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-LP0814WNR-115-volt-Conditioner/dp/B00JIURCTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425697669&sr=8-1&keywords=AC+unit+standing

It's not permanently installed (which is nice because you can take it when you move) but has a hose that goes to your window, like this: http://image.haier.com/us/products/home-comfort/portable-air-conditioners/W020130524577570305422.png

It comes with the little plastic thing that fits in your open window. It's only a problem if you have casement windows where you have to wind the little lever to open the window like a door. But if you have normal windows that slide open and shut, it's perfect. And your landlord can't be upset because it's not permanently installed.

u/domesticpig · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

if you're using it in your home, that has heat in winter--like most homes--either will work fine. it's just a matter of which is more energy efficient and you can check the energy ratings on each particular model.

they tend to give off a fair amount of heat though, so for summer use if it's hot then you might consider an in-room AC with dehumidifier built in, which has a vent to exhaust the warm air and will also cool the room, like this;

https://www.amazon.com/115V-Portable-Conditioner-Remote-Control/dp/B0115XWCHO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498945312&sr=8-2&keywords=lg+in+room+ac+dehumidifier

you can also get an indoor temp/humidity instrument and only turn it on when needed (some devices will cycle on/off by themselves, but I like to see the numbers!) because INDOOR RH is what you are concerned with, not outdoor.

https://www.amazon.com/Extech-RHM15-Mini-Temp-Indicator/dp/B00OZ8WKQA/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498945381&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=extech+indoor+temp+rh

u/MikeyMadness · 8 pointsr/montreal

How about using a portable air conditioner? They don't sit in a window; instead they just sit on the floor. A small one like this might do the trick for you. I included that amazon.com link so you could read the reviews. That particular model is available in Canada at places like Leon's, Sears, Corbeil, to name a few, according to frigidaire.ca.

Good luck on your search!

u/olekzap · 1 pointr/Seattle

Don't rent, just buy one like this. You will use it more than just one summer. I've had this one for two years now and it's been fine. I only use it to cool the bedroom at night but it would probably also cool a small studio. It also doesn't hang out the window so I don't think your landlord would care.

u/the_guy_the · 3 pointsr/SaltLakeCity

For the people to whom it's relevant:

$480 gets you a portable, dual-hose AC/heating heat pump.

12,000 BTU of AC, and 10,000 BTU of heating. Maybe $100 more than a normal portable AC. Good reviews. Can effectively cool around 500 square feet, and effectively heat around 250 square feet.

u/palipr · 1 pointr/homelab

lol fitting name and recommendation. Thanks! I had never thought about the panty hose before.

For AC I am leaning towards: http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-SRCOOL12K-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B002XITVCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373462653&sr=8-1&keywords=server+room+air+conditioner

That AC unit claims to filter the air too. But in case it doesn't work very well I might add on an air purifier (to sit elsewhere in the room, not daisy chained or anything like that): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CCYSV8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

My room is probably going to sound like a wind tunnel though...

u/Blibidy · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

My fiancé used a portable unit similar to the link below to cool a large outdoor shed, he used as a bedroom. The hose ran out a small dog door, so your window size is no issue. It was loud but very effective in the north Texas heat. Also, since it was portable it went into storage in the winter, freeing up floor space.

I’ve been using Arctic MX-4 for a while now and it’s served me well. This includes swapping a pair of X5675s into my R710.

Note - it’s also a good idea to invest in a good cleaner to remove the existing thermal paste. Articlean works well.

I've never seen another person who lives in the Lancaster/Palmdale area on Reddit before. Anyway, I bought an evaporative cooler from Amazon a couple months ago for $100. It works perfectly for out here (Lancaster). I roll it to my bathtub and open the side and let water go in for 20 seconds. It makes my room easily 20 degrees cooler. I can also add ice into it as well to make it even cooler.

Here's the link to it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R48G5K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In response to /u/boolean_union :

>> I haven't done much research recently, but I'm hoping that mini ductless split systems (similar to what you see in hotels) start to become more consumer-oriented. Then you could just have a small enclosure outside the apartment in which to mount the condenser, a tiny port for the coolant line, and then place the evaporator wherever you want it inside the apartment.

Check out 12:50 of your video. Apparently what they are looking for does exist: RolliCool "portable" mini split. While the quality of this particular is definitely dubious, apparently what OP is looking is out there already, and I'd expect to see better options out there with time.

That is way to high. Might I suggest this (I had to do it when I was in an apt and saved me tons of money.) if you can hide it from the apt people which I was able to do with a simple chair and potted plant. Get a portable AC unit similar to this one and cool only the area that you are using. Good luck.

We got a Whynter 14,000 BTU portable ac for summer 2014 & it did a pretty good job in our 900 sq ft house. smile.amazon.com/dp/B0028AYQDC A perk of having a small house, I guess. We're scheduled for whole house ac install July 27. Hope we can make it til then!

I live in the FL panhandle. My garage isn't insulated, but this unit does a pretty good job for beating the heat. It hasn't seen > 90 degrees yet, but it does a good job of dehumidifying and cooling so far (it's been 85 at least). Dang, it was also $50 cheaper when I bought it... I guess the season is probably driving the price up.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LUKEWARM · 1 pointr/space

> So you could have a solid state air-conditioner. But it would use more electricity than a conventional one, so they're only used in very specific circumstances.

wait, seriously? why don't they sell these as small personal air conditioners?

Currently this is all that is available I think, but they don't work well in humid areas.

A solid-state AC would be amazing for situations where you need cooling for a brief moment but it is too muggy for a fan. Even if it's at a premium.

u/somenewuser · 3 pointsr/Dallas

I've been a renter in Texas but I'm not a lawyer, so best of luck to you.

Texas Property Code 92.052(3)(a) says that the "landlord shall make a diligent effort to repair or remedy a condition" which "materially affects the physical health or safety of an ordinary tenant." Air conditioning doesn't automatically fall under this requirement because the law treats it as an amenity, not a requirement. However, common law (that is, court decisions) have generally recognized that air conditioning "materially affects" a tenant when a heat emergency has been declared by the National Weather Service twice in a month or if a power utility would otherwise be barred from disconnecting service to a delinquent customer. (I'm not saying you are a delinquent customer, the power companies have restrictions on disconnections that some courts also see as a useful measure for what affects a tenant. Even if a heat emergency hasn't been declared, if your apartment is hotter than is "reasonable" (I've heard this be considered as low as 90F), you may still have a right under the law to repair and deduct or move.

In order to use what few rights you have in this situation, you must follow very specific steps. The Texas Young Lawyers Association Tenants' Rights Handbook has details and the Austin Tenants' Council has a packet of sample letters you can try.

Your lease may require the landlord to fix the air conditioning, however most leases leave very few remedies for the tenant. Your only realistic option against a landlord where the lease is being violated is to sue in JP court.

Texas renters have very, very few rights, especially for living in such a warm climate several months out of the year. The law says that property owners are the rulers of the roost; tenants are merely tolerated as an outgrowth of a right of property owners to lease certain rights. Ultimately, you may find that spending $300 on a portable air conditioner and toughing it out until the end of your lease is the most efficient use of your time.

Couple of thoughts

  1. They are doing this to boost value. It’s just a matter of time before they raise rates to capture that value. Time to shop alternative places to live.

  2. it may require legal action. Which may cost more than #3. But there is a free law place on 13th

  3. there are technical options

I use something like this and it works pretty well. Nice thing is you can park it right next to where you need it to be cool the most (ie, right next to your bed/desk). Downside is it also functions as a dehumidifier so you'll have a tub/bucket to dump daily. I use it to water my garden so it's not a big deal.

This works beautifully if you have a way to vent the heat.
If you go portable make sure it's a dual vent system so that you're not sucking air out of your home.

Kansas here. They don't do shit most of the time. My buddy had a smaller one, like this I think. We bought an old ice maker (one of those free standing ones that makes like 20 pounds a day). We'd pour a days worth of ice into the bottom then fill it with water so the water it was blowing over was cooler. It helped a little but not a ton, because the cardboard thing held the water long enough to warm it up.

u/paycheck_day · 1 pointr/containerhomes

Hey there I assume you want something like this: Portable AC

I would recommend against these as they are very inefficient since the ac unit is inside a lot heat goes into the space it is trying to cool. Instead I would get a Mini split AC like this one They are much more efficient as all of the parts that get hot are outside the house.

If you don't want to be mounting anything outside then at the least I would get a portable ac with dual intake/exhaust hoses. like this The reason these are better than the single hose ones is these dual hose ones don't make your home have a negative air pressure which causes it to suck hot air into your house through gaps in doors and windows.

BTW I don't know anything about the individual products I linked they are just examples.

u/scuppasteve · 3 pointsr/Sacramento

Evaporative coolers or swamp coolers work where you have dry heat. Swamp coolers are best used in places that you arent trying to keep super cool, like a garage. It needs constantly new air or the process doesnt work. Because the change in humidity is the mechanism for cooling. See this [CHART] (http://www.alloutcool.com/image-files/evaporative-cooler-chart458x298.gif)
This chart shows the best case scenario for cooling, based on starting air conditions. We are at about 30% humidity and temp should be about 100F so best case you are looking about a temp in the low 80's that will now be very humid, like 80% humidity. So it will take the edge off but wont be very cool. Due to the size of the unit you listed, it will not be very effective at cooling the space as it just does not move enough air. You need something more this size 1 or 2.

u/polyhistorist · 2 pointsr/Frat

Since only u/roadbird21 really answered this I'll jump in. Do you own the house or rent it? Is it long term rent (like you know you'll have it for 5+ years ) or short term? And do you have alot of money or a little?

Short term: (if you don't own the house/don't have a ton of money)Dehumidifiers are a great option. Dry air is not as sweat inducing as wet air is. Also get one or two portable AC units. As large as you can afford (by BTU) such as this one.

These work by having an exaust for hot air. Route this up the stairs and outside the nearest window. You can buy extra tubing from home Depot. Get enough AC for double the room size.

Medium term (you have more money, a long rent that's several years). Something like this would be good

Long term: you have a long rent, own the property, or have a ton of money

This is what your looking for

Note, I do a ton of DIY projects, including plumbing and electrical for my house. I probably would get someone to install this anyhow. Also, if your renting. You need to talk with your land lord.

u/PhyterNL · 2 pointsr/Seattle

Though I understand many apartments don't allow in-window air conditioners I believe that they all should allow the upright style with a window sill vent. My brother has one of these to cool his bedroom and says it works well. Personally a fan works well enough for me, the heat just doesn't last long enough to bother me.

u/di5ide · 1 pointr/BurningMan

We used these for each of our springbar/Kodiak tents: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000R48G5K?cache=b36992ba57de02dd5dabf0957f6823b1&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1410491672&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1

Yes, I personally use one.

There are appartments and condos and even some neighborhoods that disallow in-window AC units. For reasons.

This is why you can now buy In-room AC units that have an attached hose to exhaust the hot air, and trays for condensate. They are not as efficient, but if that's all you can use, its better than the alternative.

I use a portable a/c similar to https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-MN12CES-Portable-Conditioner-Dehumidifier/dp/B008UHXLGA

Connects a hose to a port thats like 3 inches wide and 8 inches long. My window is like a foot and a half across and like 5 feet tall and the whole thing swings open. So i use some corrugated plastic like https://www.homedepot.com/p/Coroplast-48-in-x-96-in-x-0-157-in-White-Corrugated-Plastic-Sheet-CP4896S/205351385 to block the whole opening up. With some aluminum tape sealing up the edges.

Cools down almost everywhere but a fan like https://www.costco.com/Cascade-40%22-Tower-Fan-with-Remote.product.100405139.html in a doorway solves the problem and is pretty quiet.

This setup has covered me for four living situations/layouts and only requires you have a window that opens so its hard to understand how your setup fails. What a/c are you using? Can we get a crude map of your room layout?

I've had this one since 2015 and used it every summer since. I've never tried cooling the entire apartment but it keeps a bedroom ice cold. Portable air conditioners that exhaust outside work well, much better than a swamp cooler.

I bought one of these for my office in an un-air-conditioned house (I work from home) and even with computers running generating heat it will freeze me out.

The biggest thing if you get a portable is to get one that puts some of the removed moisture in the exhaust...otherwise you'll have a water tank you're constantly emptying.

u/johnnychronicseed · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

That mini AC is not going to do much... Are you able to pump cold air from either Central Air or a Window AC unit?

Also what are you doing with the Exhaust air? Pumping back into the same room, outside, different room?

If you cannot pipe air from a Window AC or Central Air and you are already venting your exhaust to a different room/outside you will need something like this to cool down the room your intake pulls from.

Yes you can actually, portable Air Conditioners have this exact thing for exhausting heat by hooking it up to a sliding window.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XITVCK They use it even for servers as well.

The PROBLEM is the moisture from outside can easily cause your components to corrode if your using that as intake, without some kind of moisture filtre/collector.

But you'll want to get actual temp data for how hot or cold your PC is running with and without the heater to determine if it's actually necessary.

I suspect a portable would be fine.

They're pretty inexpensive these days.

not sure how buying on amazon works in Canada...

see if this link works:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0028AYQDC/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all&qid=1537358543&sr=8-3

Whynter dual hose 14k BTU (used) shows $332 USD which should be like $430 CAD

they are all amazon warehouse deals so if it sucks or not to your liking easy/free return.

u/tuctrohs · 1 pointr/HVAC

I would recommend a dual-hose unit, e.g.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003MQBYYU

Single hose means you are exhausting conditioned air.

Edit: Cheaper one:

Or more power for the same price as what I originally linked:

I just got this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2BTAV6/ref=twister_B00NOOY32U?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Took all of 5 minutes (no joke) to setup, and I can roll it away when it's not needed and put it in the closet.

u/addylare · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Oh and here’s the portable AC I was speaking of! You could even install transom windows kits for light rather than circulation if you went with this. As I mentioned, I’d put them above the doors and closets!

Edit: I've had this model for about 4 years now, and I've had zero issues.

Look into a two hose portable unit. This is just one such product, there are a 100 more. Watch the video on the left side of the link:

https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Dual-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC

u/attempted · 5 pointsr/astoria

The unit doesn’t go in the window, there are hoses that go out from the ac. It’s an older model of this.

Haha...check out the #1 new release in statues.

Has anyone used one of these air sprayers from IT Dusters? I am thinking of getting one as I am fed up of buying canned air to dust the inside of my computer off. The reviews for it seem decent.

We had a few "closets" at my old job in some dorms that did not have AC.

Is a portable AC unit an option?

Acrylic was $90, but we had a fairly tall window to cover.

Unit was this, but damn it was only $300 when we got it back in March.

in the case of a screen, get an portable ac that has a dual outlet into the window, it wouldnt go past the window itself so the screen wont interfere, and its not a "window unit" so you bypass that little restriction as well. this was on sale for 330$ a few days ago https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Dual-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1469732564&sr=1-4&keywords=portable+ac

Getting heat out is more important than AC cooling.
You can get portable AC units that don't have to physically go in the window. Ove used a couple of these 14k btu units in a room with no Windows.

The roll around one I have works with both horizontal and vertical sliding windows.

I got it because my apartment building doesn't allow us to have the box air conditioner units that stick out. The one I have has a vent hose that goes out any window. Comes with a bracket to seal off the open part of the window. here's the one I bought off of Amazon It's more expensive than it was last year apparently.

I have a Whynter ARC 14s, I use it to cool about 500 sqft and it kicks ass. It is kind of loud when you run it on high but it puts out some cold air.

/u/fbogg might be onto something. Family member of mine uses what I call a spot cooler, basically a cooler for one or a couple smaller rooms that sits on the floor, and the exhaust pipes to the window via a smaller 4-6" flex pipe, that would solve about all your issues right there, a lot of them come with a 90 degree shield where dirt wouldn't be able to go into the pipe and land on the shield.

Unsure about this product but a quick search to explain my idea.

u/princess_lily · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Husband bought this - amazing product! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002W87P9C?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

When our AC died we hooked this up to the window in our bedroom and shut the door to the rest of the house - it cooled our bedroom to a nice 76°f for a day our two as the ac specialists were prepping install

u/couchmonster · 18 pointsr/eastside

Try a portable A/C unit, no need for permanent installation. You just run a hose out a window.

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Portable-Conditioner-Storage-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC

u/kesekimofo · 4 pointsr/LosAngeles

Buy a dual hose unit. Single hose works against itself by depressurizing the house and causing hot outside air to leak in.

My father in law bought one of these and he can't stop raving about it.

Instead of going through all of this with trying to fix it yourself, why don't you spend $300 on a portable AC unit? When you move out, you can sell it to your neighbor or on craigslist for almost what you paid.

Also, if you fix it yourself and it doesn't work out, they can blame you and charge you your deposit.

You can be sneaky about this - don't get a "window ac unit", get a "portable ac unit" that sits on the floor and has a hose that goes out the window for exhaust. http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FRA053PU1-000-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B004P8K39G/ref=lp_1193678_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1374251823&sr=1-3

Question comes up every year.

Drop some money and get this bad boy

And cool down your basement beforehand. It should be an icebox before people get in there.

Stop letting large people down there as well. They create a lot of heat.

Our old basement we couldn’t create an airflow, but if you can you should

In the winter use your airmovers to pump in cold ass air

u/cryptovariable · 1 pointr/worldnews

Ok. Everyone's bitchin.

"Oh but ye olden Britain isn't prepared for a heatwave!"

Well. I've been around for more than a couple of decades.

"Unprepared" Britain (and the EU in general) seems to have heatwaves for which they are unprepared fairly regularly.

Like, every other year recently.

Is it really that hard to get a portable air conditioner, or as the Brits call them "Air Con Balamadamadingdongs", or as the Germans say "KlimaanlageGerätgroßerKühleZufriedenheitBoxGefühl" for $279 (£182.94, €212.75) and keep it in a god damned closet while not in use or something?

It seems that would be preferable to dying.

How can you be unprepared for something that happens almost every other year?
