Hey, advanced welcome to California :) Since I'm from Cali, I can tell you this right now: It can get REAAAAALLLLYYYY HOOOOTTTT!!! The other night before my job interview, I actually couldn't sleep because I felt like I was in a sauna and I was melting all night long! (Fortunately, I got hired lol)

Anyway, I'm actually thinking of getting something like this -> a portable air conditioner :D

It's pretty affordable I think if you consider how much misery it would save you from :D Really, the only thing I hate about California is the HEAT... you know there's a terrible heat wave when the ambulances are visiting my neighborhood almost everyday due to senior citizens who couldn't take the heat anymore.

Yep, so please, really take the heat issue of California seriously. You don't want to be experiencing it and have no way of saving yourself.

If the place you're going to live in has proper air conditioning, then good! But if not, then definitely get this one.

I also suggest ANYTHING at all that would help you fight heat in case you don't have an air conditioner. Even an electric fan is useless when the air it spews out is hot. That's how I suffered the other night X_X

So there we go, welcome to California and I hope you'll have fun here :D There are lots of beautiful places in California! Be sure to check out Disney Land in Anaheim, Universal Studios somewhere (I forgot), and Knott's Berry Farm (in Buena Park - this is a city, not a park lol!!!) :D

Ok one last reminder: Please take the heat issue seriously, that's all I can really warn you about California lol :)

Ooops I almost forgot, if you ever think that my advice is useful to you, well I don't really have anything under $5 on my wish list, but I do have a friend whom I want to cheer up (and my friend has $5 and less items), if possible, I'd like to give my win to my friend :) Thank you very much and enjoy California (just not the heat) :D

No problem.

Yes the PC would be relatively quiet. PCs these days aren't very loud anymore. Especially when you buy quality cases. The stock fans on them are not super terrible.

How-ever, often when the fans have to spin quicker because tempatures rise up, these fans can become hearable. So for my personal PC I bought a lot of Noctua's. I mostly suggest people to keep the stock fans and if they find them to loud, buy aftermarket later. As for my suggestion, I got an aftermarket fan because the stock fan got white blades and would missmatch with the black and red theme we got going. If you want me to suggest a full setup of aftermarket fans because you just want the silence, let me know and I can do this.

Leaks in watercooling is always the scary part for people when they have no experience with it. For all in one watercoolers. This happens far less frequently. I actually don't have numbers of it, but my guess would be that around 0,001% of the sold units would have leakage.

For custom watercooling setups. They always do a leak test for a long amount of time. Note that this person got very bad tubing runs.

Now for my suggest cooler, this is actually pretty close to a custom watercooling setup. It got a fill port and you can remove the tubing and even add a block for your GPU to cool that with water as well. So if you really are afraid of leaks, I would just suggest to install the cooler. Place some kitchen paper on all the parts where it can leak (so the connections) and let it run for about 6+ hours with regular checking. How-ever the most important part is the first minute.

Installing an AIO is actually a lot simpler compared to most air coolers. So for a first time builder, it's a great option. I did not know that you were a firs time builder, so I will give you a few helpful guides.

---

As for peripherals. Great! I would need to know the budget, we got about £150 left from the PC budget. As for the rest, I would need to know a few things.

Peripherals are all very hard to suggest, if we don't have enough information. There are a lot of things we need to know before we can suggest the right setup. I assume we have enough budget for a mechanical keyboard. But if not, then the other parts are still important.

  • Mouse: How do you grip the mouse? How many buttons do you want? How big is your hand? Are you left or right handed?
  • Keyboard: I recommend to go read about Mechanical Keyboards switch types first. Then after you know wich switch would be for you, you can give me that information. Then my other questions would be, do you want a TenKeyLess? Basicly a smaller keyboard. If you don't want a TKL, do you want any "macro keys"?
  • Headphones/Speakers: What music do you listen? Where will you sit when using the headphones, will it be in a loud room? Will you be on your own? Do you need a microphone?

    ---

Some video's that will help you with the build!

    ---

  • How to build a PC: Here. Completely ignore the parts that he chose. I actually was very surprised at that date when he came with those products, as I don't think it's optimized well and the GPU could've been a lot better. Anyway, ignore it! Building a PC is basicly the same, the wires did not change and the process is not changed either. You can skip the stock intel CPU cooler part and instantly install the aftermarket CPU cooler. This is just easier for you so you don't have to clean the thermal paste later. Wich would cost you another £/$/€10 or so. How-ever be careful with the watercooler. If you don't feel comfortable with it, then buy this & this to be able to clean the thermal paste and install the stock cooler for basic testing.
  • How to overclock my CPU: Basicly pretty much this. Very solid and simple to follow guide. This is done with an Asus board so it will be slightly different with our motherboard. Slightly different names and they are often on other places, etc.
  • How to overclock your GPU: Hey guys, this is Austin! It really is very easy these days. I highly suggest to run 10-15 minutes stress tests in between changing to a higher frequency. After you hit crashes and/or artifacts. I sugges to go down 2 steps or at least 10mhz on the core clock and 25/50 on the memory. Then do a full +6 hour stress test at least.

    ---

Hope this helps, if you still have questions, let me know and i'll do my best to answer this.

Honestly, even entry-level chillers kinda sting when you see the price tag. My home is an oven and fans/ice/water changes just weren't cutting it so I recently bit the bullet and got what seemed like the most affordable legitimate offering out there (this guy from Active Aqua) but even that was $335, plus a pump.

A set of fans can give you a drop of at least a few degrees and if you can get that to work it will save you a lot of money, but if you want the peace of mind knowing your axolotl will always have a stable and safe temperature it's gonna be a bit of an investment.

If you buy a chiller, things to look out for would be

  1. what size fittings it has (for ease of setting up hoses, the less creative plumbing the better)

  2. how many GPH it accepts (should roughly match your filter if possible, otherwise you may need a separate pump)

  3. the performance curves in the manual should show you how much it can cool a given volume of water. The chiller I linked to above can chill 50L from 70 to 60 in about an hour, for example

I've got this unit: Whynter 14000 BTU

Area: ~750sqft

Dual hose unit, and I keep a blanket wrapped around the hot air hose for a little insulation.

No real other advice. My unit is probably overkill for a smaller place or a single room, but the fact that it can cool my bedroom at the far end of the house is a huge plus.

This thing weighs a ton but it rolls super super easy. I would not get it to bring up and down stairs though.

Don't regret it at all :)

u/tatibati · 1 pointr/skoolies

Oh wow, I haven’t heard of phifertex, thank you!

Our fans are not fixed or window mounted. We were debating window mounted, but I would really prefer to maintain the beautiful views through the windows.

For this summer, we ended up using arctic air swamp coolers and a big box fan. The box fan takes up a lot of space... so not ideal for long term, but it suited our needs for camping this summer just fine.

The arctic air coolers are basically mini swamp coolers. It’s a fan with a small tank to fill with ice water. They are not meant to cool down large areas. Two of those in our short bus helped make it more tolerable for us when we were unable to park in the shade. They work best in dry climates. Again, these were more of a temporary fix until we can upgrade our solar panels and look into a long term A/C option.

u/Scotsmania · 3 pointsr/PS4

I use a Compucleaner to clean it that i bought years ago for cleaning my PC which works very well. Datavac is another brand but a bit more expensive. You need to make sure you put a finger on the fan to hold it in place so it doesn't break though as they are strong.

Don't blow into the vents around the sides. The plastic on the top of the PS4 clips off, clean it from the inside so the dust blows out.

Aside from that making sure that it's placed somewhere elevated helps a lot to avoid gathering dust in the first place. Try to avoid having it somewhere like the bottom shelf of a unit close to the floor.

u/Kylista · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

As other posters have mentioned, sometimes if a portable air conditioner doesn't seem like it's working, it's because there isn't enough circulation.

I was in a situation similar to yours, trying to cool down a living area with vaulted ceilings in the summer with a 14,000btu portable AC, and it didn't seem like it was doing shit. It was nice to sit in front of, but 3 feet away it was hot as hell.

The solution was around air circulation. I actually ended up opening a bedroom down the hall and opening a window and putting a box fan in it to blow air out.

2 hours later the living area was pleasantly cool and so was my bedroom, which was a nice bonus.

my AC unit is https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Dual-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC and it works wonderfully.

u/MeisterX · 3 pointsr/Frugal

"$30, that's almost free"

Well, $30 isn't really "almost free."

You can get a window-mount unit for $150 on Amazon.

That's only 5x more expensive and uses 115 Volts (twice as much power) but you don't have the added need for manufacturing or buying ice for your fan.

However, if you could find a cheap, free, water source (like a lake) you might be able to use this as an A/C system and keep it cheap.

OR you could eliminate the need for water by actually using some kind of coolant and operating an outdoor unit connected to an indoor unit. You would only increase the power requirement by about 1.5x to run the outdoor fan and you would need twice as much copper tubing for a second unit. Could work though.

Something like that would work out to (based on his pricing) $50 and ~80 volts.

EDIT: Here's some biodegradable coolant for about $40. That would work.

u/ovirt001 · 1 pointr/homelab

Mine is currently in my laundry room. I've had to deal with heat issues as well but since I live in the west I just stick a swamp cooler in the window during the summer.
A dedicated area would be best but I can definitely understand it being expensive. Maybe you can convince the wife to let you setup one of these?
https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Portable-Conditioner-Frost-ARC-12SD/dp/B003MQBYYU

That may be overkill for your setup. Either way if you do decide to go this route, make sure to get a dual-hose model. The single-hose models are near pointless as they suck air out of the house.

u/Lextube · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboardsUK

If you were happy with razer switches then I'd lower your requirements to literally just any mechanical keyboard with whatever brand switches as you're gonna get the same experience.

The thing with prebuilt keyboards, is all the boards aimed at gamers made by Corsair, Razer etc are all WAY overpriced and the quality isn't exactly reflective of what you pay. You can get an identical quality experience from much cheaper prebuilts by the likes of Magicforce and Motospeed, or even just any random brand mechanical keyboard you can find on Amazon by Redragon, Aukey, HCMan etc. All these brands are basically offering the same board just with different logos on them. All generic but still very much usable mechanical keyboards.

There's a reason why even the cheap mechanical boards get good reviews on Amazon. It's because the vast majority of people will notice no discernible difference between a 25 quid mech and a 125 quid mech.

You can get this Motospeed CK108 if you want a fullsize board, with blue switches, metal plate and RGB for 57 quid. That keyboard would be identical in feel and quality to a Corsair board honestly.

Again, this HCman TKL board if you want TKL size. Only 27 quid and again with blue switches, metal plate and RGB. Or the same board with a black metal plate.

Also if you want to order from China to get more options (and a bit cheaper price), what about this Motospeed CK61 with Kailh Box Whites if you fancy a 60% board? I wouldn't change caps as those are probably the older box whites that will stretch caps, but the stock caps will last on them so long as they aren't taking on and off a lot of times. I did actually game on a CK61 for a while. The box whites are seriously satisfying gaming switches. They are clickbar clicky but they are so smooth for stock switches. They also did a CK62 with Bluetooth, but never tried that one. That one doesn't have Kailh Box switches.

u/Wdeflect · 2 pointsr/SeattleWA

Definitely. My house gets super hot, and being able to bring the AC unit to any room I'm in is a godsend. I got this one (was cheaper last year) and it's worked well for me, at least for one summer! I've read ones with dual hoses are better.

u/opusagogo9000 · 2 pointsr/Entrepreneur

absolutely true. However you might be interested in what I found on another subreddit, i can't remember which subreddit. Its a 500w super efficient air conditioner, good for 200sqft. Right now my Kill-a-watt displays 535 watts, and that includes my Desktop (T61 laptop 44w), second monitor (26" 25w), and lamp (23w CFL), a bunch of USB devices and router (10w), and the air conditioner is on low setting. I've only had to set it to high once. Today's temperature was 93. It helped me get through the 104 temperatures we had a few weeks. All I had to do was front run the heat around 1pm. One of those tiny $100 harbor freight 900w generators could easily do that for about $2 a day in gas. Or two 300w panels and an inverter, probably wouldn't even need a battery. Its doable now days! Also I notice 90% of my heat is from the roof because I have no shade.

I'm happy to talk over your plans and help out where I'm able. Looking at your comments in this post, I see a couple things that I'd like to point out to you that you can think about.

It sounds like you've already got the shed framed in and your insulated interior space will be around 6'x9', is this correct? I don't love your idea for the tiny 2' space and a 6x6 grow area. You've got too much space for growing, and no space for working. You don't need to be able to get inside your grow chamber and walk around. To maximize yield, you want your grow chamber to be just large enough for the light you are using and the plants you are growing. Let's say you def want to use a 1000 watt MH/HPS- A 4'x6' grow chamber in the rear of the shed would be perfectly sized for that light. That leaves you about 5'x6' for a work space/lung room. You need room to work. You are going to want a chair, a desk, shelves for supplies and space for tools and hardware. A 1000 watt HPS in a 4x6 space will yield 1-2 pounds per grow, and a grow takes 5 months from seed to jar.

Another thing you could do is run two grow chambers, one for flower and one for veg. You could, for example, have a 150 watt 2x4 veg space and a 600 watt 4x4 flower space. This arrangement would yield 10-20 ounces every 10 weeks.

Regardless of how you divide up the space, I think what I might do if I were in your situation is just finish the shed space with no interior walls, and use a tent for the grow chamber. This would give you the flexibility to evolve and adapt your grow shed as you develop your preferred growing technique.

Another thing I wanted to point out to you is that the portable A/C unit you are looking at is no good for growing. That is a single hose unit, and a single hose A/C unit removes air from the living space, and sends it out the exhaust hose. That means you are going to be blowing incredibly dank air out of the exhaust during flower, and you are going to have difficulty keeping your RH under control. You need to use either a window A/C unit, or a dual hose unit.

u/slohcinbeards · 1 pointr/LosAngeles

So I have a wall AC unit in my living/dining room but it's too far from the bedroom and even with creative fan placement, zero cool air gets into the bedroom. In my bedroom there is already a pre-installed hose/vent/hole through the wall underneath the window that the previous tenant placed for their portable unit. However, after some additional research I decided that a dual hose unit was a must, so I think I'm going to end up using the window for the two hoses and NOT this pre-installed hole in the wall. I really wanted to go for a window unit, but decided against it due to my window design - I hope this was the right decision (sigh). I ended up going with this model.

u/digital_end · 3 pointsr/Seattle

Very similar to what I have, works pretty well and is only $130. If not for this year, maybe set aside a few bucks here and there for next year (since this problem isn't going to go away)?

And remember you don't need it blasting all the time, just when needed to keep an area comfortable for a few weeks while the little bit of summer has it's fit and leaves. :)

u/Joe503 · 1 pointr/Portland

Just got back from buying one of these portable units from Best Buy. The Washington Square location had about 10 of them in stock, priced at $449 on the floor. Price-matching to Amazon was easy, literally just showed them my phone, bringing the price to $349.

I spent a couple of hours researching models in the $300-$500 range and this one was consistently rated well (#1 selling model on Amazon too).

Hope this helps!

u/jamilbk · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Edit: This similar thread may be useful.

I just spent forever designing the power system for my tiny house and if I can offer one piece of advice, use propane for heating. It's much cheaper, efficient, and lower maintenance than electric systems. Plus, since you're in the Bay Area, a low-power window A/C unit like this 450 W fridgidaire should suffice. You can always add a $30 1800 W electric space heater later.

Keep in mind you'll be at least tripling your expected power draw to account for inefficiencies and battery depth-of-discharge. So if you plan to use 6 kWh / day, your battery bank and solar panels should be sized for 18 kWh / day. That's about 10 large 12V 155 Ah batteries. Nearly 1,000 lbs of weight. Since your wool insulation is only about half the R-value of spray foam, you'll need to account for that as well.

tldr; Save yourself the added weight and cost of additional solar, batteries, and inverter and just go with a window unit and propane stove or in-floor radiant system via tankless water heater.

u/shemp420 · 1 pointr/Seattle

I am in a similar apartment. It gets stifling once the days really warm up and thee sun starts setting further to the N. Install some light blocking curtains if you can.

I bought this unit Honeywell MN10CESWW 10,000 BTU Portable A C Which works great in terms of blowing ice cold air. The apartment has a built in hole in the wall for attaching the air hose.

However, even thought the AC unit works great, it just can't keep up with the heat in terms of cooling the entire space. The studio apt was well above 75 for a few months in a row. Sitting in front of the AC fan stream worked well enough to have a comfortable-ish evening after work. I did not install curtains because I didn't want to deal with patching the hardware holes once I move. I might cave and put them in this year though.

u/Mortimer452 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

As explained below, one intake and one exhaust.

Single hose units intake air from the room (which is your cool, conditioned air) and vent outside. While they cool, they're also sucking some cool air from inside your house and blowing it outside.

Dual hose units don't have this problem - both intake and exhaust are performed with outside air, so all your expensive cold air stays inside :)

The one I use in my workshop is a Haier 14,000BTU portable unit, I really like it and it's seen very heavy use. Sorry I can't seem to find it online, it appears to be discontinued. Here's one made by Whynter that has pretty good reviews.

u/zombiescooby · 4 pointsr/Assistance

If you absolutely cannot fix it or put in a board like noted above, why not aim for a less expensive unit like [this one](SPT 8,000BTU Single Hose Portable AC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006YG683C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_X9bvxbA1YBAMV). It's only $240 with prime shipping. It may be easier to find someone to loan you that amount than $500. Good luck!

u/Qeez- · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I have to keep the door closed all the time because of pets and so I can’t really vent air in to the room any other way besides the window and it only opens by like folding outwards vertically if that makes sense. Why wouldn’t something like this A/C unit work to cool the bedroom by hooking it up to the window? I figure that would in turn help help the tent temps lower because I just have a small fan blowing air in through an open vent on the bottom. Also what would be the difference between that and the 2 hose?

u/Spo_0ky · 1 pointr/Calgary

We got this one a few years back, works like a charm and well worth the money, in 30-35C heat it will actually keep the place nice and cool (~500 square foot room)

I read many of your posts in this thread...

  1. Get rid of the mini dehumidifiers and the buckets of damp rid. They do not have enough capacity to help this situation. You need to remove gallons of water per day at first, and maybe for the entire summer. These things will not do that for you.

  2. Can you add another window AC? The AC will remove humidity as well as cool you, while a real dehumidifier will remove humidity but add heat.

  3. An option is one of these if you don't want to install a window unit. This is only an example. You do not want one with a single hose, you want a dual hose unit. Single hose units draw some hear in: https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Portable-Conditioner-Frost-ARC-12SD/dp/B003MQBYYU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500511991&sr=8-3&keywords=portable+air+conditioner+dual+hose

4: If all else fails, get a real dehumidifier. Something like http://www.homedepot.com/p/Frigidaire-70-pt-Dehumidifier-FAD704DWD/206734553. It will add heat but also remove the humidity.

    Good luck!
u/chefandy · 1 pointr/news

I found your solution

They make much cheaper models, but those are really only suited for hot/dry climates. I'm assuming Philly is pretty humid. This unit actually takes the humidity out of the air and evaporates it to cool off the room. It's cheaper than an ac and will work better than 4 fans blowing hot air on you

u/Rainz0412 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

This seems pretty cost effective, I'm going to guess right now and say the room is maybe 8' x 5' x 8' (it has a narrower door on it). So fairly small, almost a closet.

Would one of these really make that much of a difference?

Also this one seems to have the best reviews what do you think?

u/lanismycousin · 1 pointr/AskReddit

You will be fine with a smaller window AC unit.

Something like http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FRA052XT7-Mini-Window-Conditioner/dp/B003F4TH6G/ref=tag_stp_s2f_edpp_air_co15er

I have had good luck with frigidaire and haier A/Cs in the past.

I would recommend that you at least give craigslist a search and see if there is anyone getting rid of a unit. I was able to pick up a similar small window AC for 20 bucks offseason last year. The little Haier kept me cold all summer long.

u/Xiazer · 1 pointr/DIY

I live in town and my backyard isn't the largest but I can probably build one, but it would take a lot longer than I would want. In my head the cabinet would't be to costly as I have most of the materials already from old projects, (insulation, plywood, and 2x4s). I figure I can build it pretty quickly and use a small AC unit, or something like it, to keep it cool. Then eventually build a wind or solar generator to power it down the line.

u/olekzap · 1 pointr/Seattle

Don't rent, just buy one like this. You will use it more than just one summer. I've had this one for two years now and it's been fine. I only use it to cool the bedroom at night but it would probably also cool a small studio. It also doesn't hang out the window so I don't think your landlord would care.

u/palipr · 1 pointr/homelab

lol fitting name and recommendation. Thanks! I had never thought about the panty hose before.

For AC I am leaning towards: http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-SRCOOL12K-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B002XITVCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373462653&sr=8-1&keywords=server+room+air+conditioner

That AC unit claims to filter the air too. My fiancé used a portable unit similar to the link below to cool a large outdoor shed, he used as a bedroom. The hose ran out a small dog door, so your window size is no issue. It was loud but very effective in the north Texas heat. Also, since it was portable it went into storage in the winter, freeing up floor space.

I’ve been using Arctic MX-4 for a while now and it’s served me well. This includes swapping a pair of X5675s into my R710.

Note - it’s also a good idea to invest in a good cleaner to remove the existing thermal paste. Articlean works well.

u/Greeneee- · 0 pointsr/vandwellers

This AC is your best bet if your going to try and run it off solar. It only draws 400 watts on startup.

If your going with a generator setup, get a 2000 watt generator and a big AC. You can build a quiet box and plumb the generator into your vans gas tank. Bonus points for connecting an arduino/rasberryPi to a remote start for the generator, so that the generator/AC only runs when the van gets too warm.

Girlsplaywow is a jerk !? I think not. What an amazing contest.

I have an air conditioner on my wishlist. I've been saving towards one. An A/C would be a big help in cooling the house (I have a couple window units, but not in every room) this summer. Ahhh, Arizona summers!

Thanks for this incredible contest :)

u/J-Brosky · 4 pointsr/Homebrewing

I used this Frigidaire AC for my DIY glycol chiller build. It was easy to dissemble and the copper piping was pretty easy to bend as there is only one large diameter pipe that needed to be re-positioned.

You can really use any air conditioner but be sure it has a mechanical switch. Units with digital controls may not work well if it needs additional input once it turns back on.

I've never seen another person who lives in the Lancaster/Palmdale area on Reddit before. Anyway, I bought an evaporative cooler from Amazon a couple months ago for $100. It works perfectly for out here (Lancaster). I roll it to my bathtub and open the side and let water go in for 20 seconds. It makes my room easily 20 degrees cooler. I can also add ice into it as well to make it even cooler.

Here's the link to it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R48G5K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Amazon.com. Their prices are better than most hardware stores and Home Depot, and if you have Prime or sign up for the trial you can get it shipped 2-day for free, or 1-day for $3.99. Then you just have to get it upstairs and into the window.

This Frigidaire 5,000BTU unit is pretty highly rated and is only $115.

u/_Fah-Q_ · 5 pointsr/houston

That is way to high. Might I suggest this (I had to do it when I was in an apt and saved me tons of money.) if you can hide it from the apt people which I was able to do with a simple chair and potted plant. Get a portable AC unit similar to this one and cool only the area that you are using. Good luck.

In response to /u/boolean_union :

>> I haven't done much research recently, but I'm hoping that mini ductless split systems (similar to what you see in hotels) start to become more consumer-oriented. Then you could just have a small enclosure outside the apartment in which to mount the condenser, a tiny port for the coolant line, and then place the evaporator wherever you want it inside the apartment.

Check out 12:50 of your video. Apparently what they are looking for does exist: RolliCool "portable" mini split. While the quality of this particular is definitely dubious, apparently what OP is looking is out there already, and I'd expect to see better options out there with time.

We got a Whynter 14,000 BTU portable ac for summer 2014 & it did a pretty good job in our 900 sq ft house. smile.amazon.com/dp/B0028AYQDC A perk of having a small house, I guess. We're scheduled for whole house ac install July 27. Hope we can make it til then!

u/possumgumbo · 6 pointsr/AskEngineers

Do not take in outside air. Recirculating air as you cool it makes sure that you aren't wasting energy on cooling new hot air constantly. One simple idea is a siphon that moves cold water through a coiled copper tube in front of a fan. This will cool the air that is already present in the room.

Alternatively, buy this air conditioner from Amazon: http://amzn.com/B003KQUH0O

Watch for it to go on sale.

This cost me less to run than my heating bill.

Regardless of what you do, buy real blackout curtains (http://amzn.com/B00I9RGH0S) as well. This will prevent sunlight from heating your room while you aren't there.

u/fukitok · 2 pointsr/homegym

I live in the FL panhandle. My garage isn't insulated, but this unit does a pretty good job for beating the heat. It hasn't seen > 90 degrees yet, but it does a good job of dehumidifying and cooling so far (it's been 85 at least). Dang, it was also $50 cheaper when I bought it... I guess the season is probably driving the price up.

u/devilsadvocate · 4 pointsr/homelab

I too have central AC. That said i also have a window unit in the room where my lab is.

Even without the lab, the room is not cooled adequate. But the window unit keeps the central A/C from overworking. They are perfect for cool a smaller space that put off lots of heat, so that the central AC doesnt overwork and can cool the rest of the area. in this regard they save power when only run when people are home.

Couple of thoughts

  1. They are doing this to boost value. It’s just a matter of time before they raise rates to capture that value. Time to shop alternative places to live.

  2. it may require legal action. Which may cost more than #3. But there is a free law place on 13th

  3. there are technical options

Got some various DIY glycol chiller questions:

  • I plan to use this AC unit. Do I need to implement a delay time between cycling the unit on and off? If so, how long?

  • When/how often should I recirculate the glycol, and how long should I do it each time?

  • Is there an ideal temperature difference between the glycol reservoir and the fermenter temperatures? Or in other words, should I change up the glycol temperatures depending on whether I'm fermenting or cold crashing?

  • If the answer is yes to the above, I'm assuming then I should get a heater to heat the glycol up if I want to change the temperature of it. What heater would you recommend? I was thinking of this one.

I use something like this and it works pretty well. Nice thing is you can park it right next to where you need it to be cool the most (ie, right next to your bed/desk). Downside is it also functions as a dehumidifier so you'll have a tub/bucket to dump daily. I use it to water my garden so it's not a big deal.

u/smittyjones · 1 pointr/Justrolledintotheshop

Kansas here. They don't do shit most of the time. My buddy had a smaller one, like this I think. We bought an old ice maker (one of those free standing ones that makes like 20 pounds a day). We'd pour a days worth of ice into the bottom then fill it with water so the water it was blowing over was cooler. It helped a little but not a ton, because the cardboard thing held the water long enough to warm it up.

u/questfor17 · 6 pointsr/howto

Assume we start with ice at 0C (32F) and warm it to water at 18C (64F) over the course of 5 hours. If my math is correct, bucket cooler will cool at a rate of 300 BTU/hour. If the fan is running at 10 watts, that is about 35 BTU/hour of heat. So net, we get 265 BTU/hour from this kludge.

Or I can buy a real A/C unit for $129 that generates 19x more cooling (5,000 BTU/hr). If the bucket and the fan cost more than $7 (which they will), the A/C unit is cheaper (per unit of cooling) to buy, and will consume less electricity (per unit of cooling) than the bucket. It will also be quieter and much less work to operate.

u/paycheck_day · 1 pointr/containerhomes

Hey there I assume you want something like this: Portable AC

I would recommend against these as they are very inefficient since the ac unit is inside a lot heat goes into the space it is trying to cool. Instead I would get a Mini split AC like this one They are much more efficient as all of the parts that get hot are outside the house.

If you don't want to be mounting anything outside then at the least I would get a portable ac with dual intake/exhaust hoses. like this The reason these are better than the single hose ones is these dual hose ones don't make your home have a negative air pressure which causes it to suck hot air into your house through gaps in doors and windows.

BTW I don't know anything about the individual products I linked they are just examples.

u/scuppasteve · 3 pointsr/Sacramento

Evaporative coolers or swamp coolers work where you have dry heat. Swamp coolers are best used in places that you arent trying to keep super cool, like a garage. It needs constantly new air or the process doesnt work. Because the change in humidity is the mechanism for cooling. See this [CHART] (http://www.alloutcool.com/image-files/evaporative-cooler-chart458x298.gif)
This chart shows the best case scenario for cooling, based on starting air conditions. We are at about 30% humidity and temp should be about 100F so best case you are looking about a temp in the low 80's that will now be very humid, like 80% humidity. So it will take the edge off but wont be very cool. Due to the size of the unit you listed, it will not be very effective at cooling the space as it just does not move enough air. You need something more this size 1 or 2.

If you could rig a 4" to 6" circular vent anywhere (for instance, into the hallway or up and out of the skylight) you could get a portable air conditioner like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-MN10CESWW-Portable-Conditioner-Dehumidifier/dp/B00B2BTAV6 - they work great for smaller spaces.

u/polyhistorist · 2 pointsr/Frat

Since only u/roadbird21 really answered this I'll jump in. Do you own the house or rent it? Is it long term rent (like you know you'll have it for 5+ years ) or short term? And do you have alot of money or a little?

Short term: (if you don't own the house/don't have a ton of money)Dehumidifiers are a great option. Dry air is not as sweat inducing as wet air is. Also get one or two portable AC units. As large as you can afford (by BTU) such as this one.

These work by having an exaust for hot air. Route this up the stairs and outside the nearest window. You can buy extra tubing from home Depot. Get enough AC for double the room size.

Medium term (you have more money, a long rent that's several years). Something like this would be good

Long term: you have a long rent, own the property, or have a ton of money

This is what your looking for

Note, I do a ton of DIY projects, including plumbing and electrical for my house. I probably would get someone to install this anyhow. Also, if your renting. You need to talk with your land lord.

u/PhyterNL · 2 pointsr/Seattle

Though I understand many apartments don't allow in-window air conditioners I believe that they all should allow the upright style with a window sill vent. My brother has one of these to cool his bedroom and says it works well. Personally a fan works well enough for me, the heat just doesn't last long enough to bother me.

u/di5ide · 1 pointr/BurningMan

u/romario77 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I looked at the options, I'll list just for the sake of completeness:

1.Brewjacket immersion chiller - ~400$ plus additional for different fermenters

Pros: relatively universal, not in the thousands, portable
Cons: Can't chill more than 20 degrees below, noisy, cleaning with iodophor.

2.Cool Zone Cooling Jacket $70 just jacket, ~$150 for a fuller setup

Pros: works on most fermenters, compact, cheap
Cons: you still need something to chill your water/glycol, but if you have kegerator or icy water in a chest cooler it could work.

3.Chest freezer ~$100-200

Pros: Cheap, can be used for other things, fits most of the fermenters, especially with a collar, no additional cleaning required.
Cons: takes a lot of space.

4.Ss Brewtech FTSs $250 for 7g brewbucket

Pros: Well made, works fine, not hard to clean
Cons: Only works with SS Brebucket, needs separate chilling like a chest freezer or icy water in a chest cooler.

5.Aquarium chiller - there are different ones, I think you need to calculate your BTUs, at least a 1000 BTU is needed to chill 5g tank to 50F from 80F. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Active-Aqua-AACH10HP-Chiller-Cooling/dp/B07BHHQLKR $400

Pros: relatively cheap, no additional work required
Cons: You would need a pump, hoses and a way to chill, this is more like a combo with Cooling jacket or SS Brewtech FTSs. Only setup to work with one fermenter (maybe could be split with two pupmp pumping)

I think if you have space nothing beats chest freezer price-wise or in convenience. Plus you could do other things with it.

Other than that you need to look at pros/cons for yourself.

This is why you can now buy In-room AC units that have an attached hose to exhaust the hot air, and trays for condensate. They are not as efficient, but if that's all you can use, its better than the alternative.

$60 for this POS!? add another $50 and you can have a air conditioner. see http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FRA052XT7-000-BTU-Window-Conditioner/dp/B003F4TH6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374348654&sr=8-1&keywords=air+conditioners

for $10 I will buy some grocery store ice add to the bathtub and keep the fan on

u/victorhooi · 1 pointr/sysadmin

Oh bugger - does that also apply to the Tripp Lite SRCOOl12K?

https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-SRCOOL12K-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B002XITVCK

It seems to be designed for this purpose (cooling small computer rooms), so I assumed it would be OK.

u/kfreedom · 2 pointsr/AskNYC

I had the same issue and ended up getting this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028AYQDC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

works great for an est 600sqft apt. it has an intake and exhaust hose

u/honestplease · 1 pointr/boston

This is a good one for bedroom.

u/AmantisAsoko · 1 pointr/thereifixedit

What if it's a mini window unit that actually cools air instead of just circulating it? Something like this

u/Anticode · 1 pointr/needadvice

I'm on mobile so can't convert exchange rate... you're looking at something like this right? https://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FFRA0511R1-Window-Mounted-Mini-Compact-Conditioner/dp/B00W2KG92Y/ref=zg_bs_3737721_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VNK4NZGAZZDPVAX1SPP0

Fits in a window. Probably costs about 50 uSD yearly to run.

I've had this one since 2015 and used it every summer since. I've never tried cooling the entire apartment but it keeps a bedroom ice cold. My only issue with it is that it's a single hose so it creates a vacuum in the room you use it in which isn't as efficient. I'll definitely look into a dual hose model when this one dies.

u/bruestle2 · 2 pointsr/worldnews

A cheap AC unit isn't $1,000 here, luckily. More like $120 (78 pounds). You should be able to ship it from somewhere that doesn't have a 10x markup on top of the regular markup.

u/WingedGoat · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Sorry I've only realised that the reason why I was seeing all these £20 keyboards was because I have prime.
Keyboard 1 Keyboard 2
Keyboard 3 Which one looks okay quality?

u/occupy_voting_booth · 13 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

You really have to give some kind of indication of what you like or what you already own. Or at least what systems you have.

In lieu of any real information in your post here's my suggestion:

http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FRA052XT7-000-BTU-Window-Conditioner/dp/B003F4TH6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369920310&sr=8-1&keywords=air+conditioner

Because it's summertime and hot outside. You can even spend the rest of the money on a cheap game on sale once we know what consoles you own.

u/DenialGene · 8 pointsr/SeattleWA

If your house is like ours and and has side-sliding windows, you can get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-MN10CESWW-Portable-Conditioner-Dehumidifier/dp/B00B2BTAV6/

u/modio1234 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Can you not just get a floor ac unit like this

u/Mr_Slick · 1 pointr/Frugal

Portable air conditioners that exhaust outside work well, much better than a swamp cooler.

I bought one of these for my office in an un-air-conditioned house (I work from home) and even with computers running generating heat it will freeze me out.

The biggest thing if you get a portable is to get one that puts some of the removed moisture in the exhaust...otherwise you'll have a water tank you're constantly emptying.

u/BilboForPrez · 3 pointsr/microgrowery

Only one I found a year ago that has a intake and exhaust hoses probably too big for a small closet but might work. We have window-mounted air conditioners in the US. For example: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003KQUH0O

They cost about £100 and are used to cool individual rooms. I've never seen one in the UK, but you guys might want to consider it for next summer, if not this one.

u/TomatoTomayto · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Got one of those duster. Very pleased with it. Wasn't expecting much power but will not go back to cans after getting that one.

I find it works great on my AVR as it blowers all the dust out. Still need to use a brush to clean stubborn stuck on dust.

Some suggestions that you can get it in chemists in Ireland. Might be worth a try.

You could also try Arctic Silver ArctiClean also, you cat this kit from loads of different places, have a search online.

Grab a portable air conditioner unit, I faced a similar dilemma and it's increased my quality of life so much.

I have this one and it works well but there are a bunch of different models.

u/masonjam · 1 pointr/computers

Yes you can actually, portable Air Conditioners have this exact thing for exhausting heat by hooking it up to a sliding window.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XITVCK They use it even for servers as well.

The PROBLEM is the moisture from outside can easily cause your components to corrode if your using that as intake, without some kind of moisture filtre/collector.

But you'll want to get actual temp data for how hot or cold your PC is running with and without the heater to determine if it's actually necessary.

u/cuddling_tinder_twat · 1 pointr/sysadmin

That is pretty expensive you could find a residential unit similar for cheaper https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2BTAV6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Regardless of what you pickup it requires an exhaust vent to actually go outside. Hot air comes out of the hose so if the hose is just in the room... it won't do any good

P.S. 104f will shorten the life of your servers dramatically

Power Supplies will be the first thing to go

u/PoPotDude · 5 pointsr/microgrowery

Yeah, all this temp talk makes me want an air conditioner even more. I'm dangerously playing in the 85-87 in my new space and I'm afraid of the implications later on. The unit doesn’t go in the window, there are hoses that go out from the ac. It’s an older model of this.

Acrylic was $90, but we had a fairly tall window to cover.

Unit was this, but damn it was only $300 when we got it back in March.

I only keep it on when I am home, and I've only had it 3 months so far; I also keep it on the coldest setting. Electricity bill hasnt gone up noticeably.

I would recommend a dual-hose unit, e.g.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003MQBYYU

Single hose means you are exhausting conditioned air.

Edit: Cheaper one:

Or more power for the same price as what I originally linked:

I just got this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2BTAV6/ref=twister_B00NOOY32U?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Took all of 5 minutes (no joke) to setup, and I can roll it away when it's not needed and put it in the closet.

u/ssgzeke · 1 pointr/networking

We had a few "closets" at my old job in some dorms that did not have AC.

Is a portable AC unit an option?

Linky

u/addylare · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Oh and here’s the portable AC I was speaking of! You could even install transom windows kits for light rather than circulation if you went with this. As I mentioned, I’d put them above the doors and closets!
