u/leonardskinner33 · 3 pointsr/JAHSeeds

This is my first time growing, so please feel free to critique/rip into my setup, as I really appreciate all the help and knowledge! I actually ordered my seeds from JAHseeds a year ago, but never got my shit together enough to actually do anything with them.

I do want to take a quick moment to thank u/AFK_ing for the seeds first, as they were actually gifted to me for free. I placed an order on a whim one night, and then completely forgot about it. Turns out that JAHseeds never ended up depositing the interac transfer I sent them, so it inevitably expired. I had forgotten about the order completely, when out of the blue one day I received a letter in the mail complete with 12 free seeds and a handwritten 'apology' letter. This absolutely floored me, and left me feeling super warm and fuzzy inside. I've been cherishing the seeds up until now, so I'm really really happy that I can finally bring them to life :) Anyways....thank you JAHseeds!

Onto the setup! Currently running:

2x alibaba 240w QB

Promix HP + 2inch layer of worm castings on the bottom

Strain is The Best My seeds are not feminized however, so still unsure of sex.

Right now they are in 1 gallon pots and I'm planning on moving them into 7 gallon fabric pots when the time is right.

I kinda went ham one night and bought the entire GH nutrient lineup (including all the additives....) so I'm planning on sticking to their schedule (halved) throughout the grow. I know I could have done without a lot (most) of them, but yeah it was still cheaper than buying an Oz from the LP....Currently only feeding them water.

The tent is a GA 48x48x80, with a Vivosun 6 inch duct fan and carbon filter

Holmes Lil' Blizzard fan (this thing moves a lot of air)

I originally had a smaller tent so I started out germinating 3 seeds by dropping them in a glass of water for 36 hours. After they all popped, I planted them directly into coco pots. At that time I decided to change to a larger tent, so I dropped 2 more seeds into a glass of water to germinate. 36 hours later one of the seeds had popped, but not the other. I planted the one that popped, and left the other in the water for another 12 hours. At this time it still hadn't popped, so I just dropped it into a pot with the others. The one that never popped didnt end up coming through the soil until about 2 days ago (I was actually just about to give up on it). It's the tiny coco pot in the middle. Pretty sure it's gonna be a retard plant but whatever, I'll give it some love and care. Don't tell Justin. The nice healthy plant on the bottom right is the other seed that I germinated with it at the same time.

Oh man. Brace yourselves, I am a total Amazon junkie. (Note: These may not all be BIFL, but I'm responding to the OP in specific.)

  • $9 butter keeper. (I bought a slightly different one that's no longer available, but it's the same basic design.) Keeping butter that isn't for cooking or baking in the fridge is for chumps. Mine is always perfectly spreadable room temperature while staying fresh for weeks... sometimes months.

  • $9 TV antenna. I didn't own a TV until a few years ago, and it didn't have a built-in antenna. I don't watch much broadcast TV, so I grabbed the cheapest one I could find. Case in point for why digital is better than analog, this one picks up every digital channel perfectly.

  • $13 shoe rack (now $18). Over the past year of living in this flat, I'd developed a bad tendency of kicking my shoes off at the bottom of the stairs just inside the front door. This looked like a cheap piece of shit, but I figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. Now almost every single pair of shoes I own is in one spot where it's easy to grab—and, more importantly, everything's out of the way of people coming in and out of the house.

  • $14 jug of earplugs (50 pair). Essential for sleeping with the window open in loud neighborhoods, sharing rooms with snoring friends on a trip, or sharing beds with snoring dudes or gals you're sleeping with. These were also my go-to earplugs for shows until I got a pair that's better for listening to music.

  • $22 electric kettle. The coffeemaker in our office puts out water that isn't nearly hot enough for a proper cuppa, and I got sick of microwaving it to boiling a mug's worth at a time. No bells and whistles, but it's performed perfectly since day one, with no breaking-in period like you get with kettles that have plastic parts in contact with the water.

  • $32 32'/10m HDMI cable. Ran it between the computer in my bedroom and the TV in my living room, allowing me to watch all kinds of streaming TV and downloaded videos with friends in a spot more comfortable than standing in front of my desk.

  • Slightly over the $50 limit, but $53 space heater. My best friend and roommate is one of those dudes who's built like a furnace, and our place uses radiators for heat. We had a few days of him sweating his ass off even with the thermostat set to 68, before I realized that we could just turn it way the hell down, and I could heat my own bedroom separately. This sucker dumps out a ton of heat, with a slew of features to sweeten the deal (my favorite being the remote control).

  • Another that's slightly over, but $55 garment steamer. Collapses small enough to fit pretty much anywhere I've ever needed to store it, puts out steam within maybe 30 seconds of turning it on, and with a full tank has enough water to steam as many items as I've ever needed to do in a row. I haven't touched my iron once since I bought this thing, and my only regret is not buying one as soon as I started college over a decade ago.

And, saving the best for last:

  • $43 heated footrest. Hands-down, this is one of the best things I've ever bought in my life. I was looking for an unobtrusive, unobnoxious way to help myself stay warm in the office, which tends to be chillier than my taste year-round. When I opened it up, I was skeptical, since it looked like a cheap injection-molded piece of shit. Now, I'm pretty sure I'd rescue it from a fire before my mother. I don't want to imagine ever trying to get through another winter without it.

EDIT: As requested by /u/Mogrix, I posted List Part II: Electric Boogaloo, with more items from my Amazon history.
u/blood-guts-angelcake · 1 pointr/cats

My boyfriend is also allergic to cats, but we decided to try fostering two kittens to see how it goes because like your girlfriend I begged him to see if we could find a solution because I love cats. We've had our kittens now for a month and he's been taking a Zyrtec every morning, we vacuum and dust much more frequently, and most importantly we bought a HEPA filter which has made a huge difference. (Link here if interested - https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498754741&sr=8-4-fkmr0&keywords=honeywell+allergen+plus+air+filter+20x25x1 ) It's a little pricey but it has essentially eliminated any discomfort for him. Before when he was around cats he would get scratchy eyes, wheezy, and tight chest. We live in about a 800 sqft apartment and keep it in the living room and it is super effective. We also never let them in our bedroom so he isn't sleeping near the dander. If you don't want to commit to adopting a cat in case your allergies are problematic, I definitely recommend fostering from a local shelter! We've really enjoyed it and it's much less of a commitment in case those solutions don't work out for you. Best of luck, & hope it works out!

u/binderclips · 9 pointsr/AprilBumpers2018

:( That does sound hectic. My registry is kinda all over the place because I've already bought a ton of stuff, but just some suggestions of some things (FTM so no idea really if these are good or not, some were recommendations from friends, some were recommendations from various online resources).

  • car seat, extra base if you have more than one car, and stroller
  • baby carrier - I got the ergobaby 360 with infant insert but the Lillebaby 360 is also super popular.
  • swaddles - aden & anais seem to be hugely popular.
  • bathing supplies - washcloths, bathtub
  • first aid kit supplies - NoseFrida, nail clipper, thermometer
  • feeding - bottles, sterilizer (some people told me I had to have it, some said it was totally unnecessary), bottle cleaner brush, drying rack (seems like everyone else loves the Boon grass, but I don't have the counter space!) You can get a pump through your insurance if you plan to breastfeed, I ordered mine through Aeroflow. I ultimately chose the Spectra S2 over the Medela PISA because it's a closed system, which apparently means less chances of bacteria getting into the system and thus easier cleaning.
  • burp clothes - I was told to just get a ton of cloth diapers to use as burp clothes, and to have them everywhere.
  • diaper pail - I have two friends who say this is good enough, so I went with it. They also said to use doggie poop bags to contain the smelly diapers.
  • humidifier
  • Boppy for nursing
  • Backpack style diaper bag
  • baby may need a more convenient place to be set down other than the crib, something you can have near you in the kitchen, shower, whatever. Popular options are the rock n play, Boppy lounger, or a pack 'n play. I plan on getting the Chicco FastAsleep pack 'n play because the crib/dresser/changing station is on our 2nd floor, so I figured this could double as a changing station/napper on the first floor.

Lucie's List is probably the best resource I found online.

Like others have said, the lack of AC is only really a problem for the first 2-3 weeks and the last week. It's best to bring a pair of box fans (like so) between yourself and your roommate and set them on the window sill blowing in.

Pros:

  • Tark-Mart (Boiler Junction). Holy hell the Tark-Mart. You can literally walk to a mini-grocery store in nothing but your PJs without going outside. Want 12 packs of soda? Got it. Donuts? Got it. Frozen foods? Got it. Milk shakes? Got it. Chips? Condoms? Shampoo? Office supplies? Candy? Power Aid? THEY GOT IT.
  • Dorm-wide WiFi. Tarkington (at least in 2012-2013) was the pilot for a WiFi implementation of ResNet. If you're too cheap for a wireless router, this'll save you some money.
  • Excellent community. Seriously, easily one of the best, most open communities of all campus res halls. Made some great friends in my time there.
  • The CoRec is right across the street, making for easy workouts.
  • Wiley and Ford, the two closest dining courts (within 3 minutes of the dorm by foot) are hands down the best on campus.
  • ~10 minute walk to the Engineering campus if you hustle.

    Cons:

  • The AC issue is probably the largest.
  • The building is a bit on the older side, so don't be surprised when facilities (like plumbing) choke or get dirty rapidly. Then again, it is a men's dorm.
  • The Boiler Special will drive up Jischke and N. Stadium every Saturday morning during football season, blasting its horn and party music. It will wake you up, I guarantee it.
u/bruxbuddies · 2 pointsr/RATS

A good air purifier with HEPA and charcoal filters actually does help a lot. We have one in the room where the rats are, and sometimes it gets accidentally turned off (by my kids) and I do notice! It won't get rid of "two days after cleaning day smell" or the actual cage smell, but it will help with a general funky/stale odor smell and help freshen the air in general. This is the one I got. It's expensive but it's works great. It has a sensor which will change the level of filtration based on what's going on. I think it actually works, too, because when we had all these wildfires in the area, I noticed that it was red all the time!

For cleaning I would use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water and spray everything, and wipe down bars. Anything wooden you can try to spray down with the vinegar mix, scrub with hot soapy water, and let it sit out in the sun for a couple days/until it doesn't smell. Plastic stuff should be sprayed with the mix and washed with hot soapy water and dried in the sun. Wash any fabric in hot soapy water and put
about a half cup of vinegar and baking soda in the wash with it. This is the cheapest cleaner and it does work.

Baking soda is also a great cleaner. You can shake it out on the trays and then spray with the vinegar mix and let it sit, then hot soapy water, etc. I wouldn't do that while the rats are in the cage, but that should be safe for them and it just neutralizes ammonia.

For long-term smell problems, consider switching to a wood shavings or wood pellet bedding on the bottom (e.g., aspen, or Feline Pine pellets). I felt like the cage always smelled like pee when I was using fleece throughout. You can put a more absorbent mat underneath the shelf fleece (like home depot furniture cloth/moving mats). But they need to be changed every 1-3 days. The bedding, and also litter box training, helps a lot with smell. I didn't have much luck with paper bedding (Carefresh or Clean & Cozy). Hemp bedding also works, but I'm allergic. If you get aspen, try to filter it through a laundry bag outside to get rid of dust, then do a light spray with plain water to keep down dust.

u/onebigsmile · 2 pointsr/DentalSchool

I'm a current D2. I don't think it needs to be dental specific (like a tooth keychain or something silly like that). More practical gifts seem to be better like a contigo mug (http://www.amazon.com/Contigo-Autoseal-Stainless-Steel-Travel/dp/B00HZI5XBG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417880861&sr=8-2&keywords=contigo ), these are like the best mugs and they keep your coffee or drink warm for a really long time. You could get her a mini fan to take with her into her operatory clinic or simulation clinic. Our's get really hot and sometimes people bring in their own fans and put them on the counter next to them: something like this http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-CZ6C-Clip-On-White/dp/B000U9V47E/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1417880999&sr=8-14&keywords=small+fan .
Other than things like that just get her small things that will make her comfortable like fuzzy socks or better yet, buy things for you both that will create experiences. Examples would be concert tickets for you both, a trip somewhere, bed and breakfast for a night or weekend, etc.
hope some of this helps

u/ClosetCaseGrowSpace · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I dry for ten+ days at 60%, and IMO it's almost impossible to get a bad result if you do it like I do. I use an Inkbird RH controller connected to a blower and a humidifier to hold my dry tent very steady at 60% RH. I hang my colas for ten days plus. My herb is ready for trimming and jarring at 10 days, but it doesn't matter at all if I leave it in there for ten weeks. I don't check stems for dryness- I just give it 10 days or more. My herb usually ends up spending 14 or 21 days in the dry tent because I do most of my garden work on weekends.

I trim my bud in front of the TV with the room humidified to 60%. I keep a hygrometer on the coffee table. That way I don't have to worry about my herb drying out as I trim. I use clear 1 quart wide-mouth Mason jars. I fill them to 3/4 which is about an ounce. You need enough room in the jars to shake free the nugs when they stick together.

Good luck, brother. I hope you get a real nice result.

Burping/curing: You want a dark place to store your jars that you can easily access each day. Ideally you want temps at 55F-75F. Curing isn't magic. It's mainly just the process of chlorophyll breaking down and gassing off. Here's how I burp a pound of weed in 5 minutes- Pick up jar, shake, loosen lid, put down jar, repeat for all jars. Remove all of the lids and set aside. Use a personal fan like this to blow out the jars. Re-lid and your done.

I burp daily for the first two weeks. Every other day for the next two weeks. Twice a week for the next two weeks. One a week from week 6 to 12. Once a month after that. You will have harsh but smokeable weed that probably wont give you a headache after three weeks of cure. You will have weed that smokes like like decent street/dispensary weed at six weeks. Your shit really starts smoothing out at 3 months. At six months you are at peak cure and quality.

This will probably help you.

  1. Get a good soldering station in the 40 - 60 Watt range look for Weller, Hakko or Aoyue stations.
Even thier basic models will last a lifetime and will make your soldering 90% easier.

Your Iron heats constantly with 30W, if you touch the solder+components and board, the temperature will drop below the melting point of the solder. A soldering station is heat controlled if the temperature of the tip drops the station will pump more power in the heating element and the temp will stay constant.

  2. Use lead solder, it needs lower temperatures. BTW lead free solder is not healty either.

You need to take care of the fumes, keep your wokspace well ventilated! If you can get a cheap PC cooling fan (120mm or more) put some Cut-to-Fit Carbon filter behind it (at least 2 layers) and make a stand with a wire coathanger ( i have an old mini tripod works great too)

Build a few solder dispenser pens (wear gloves) I use pens with metal tips.

Or you can buy a fume extractor and a dispenser.

  3. Clean your soldering tip, it will last a lot longer (but you have to change them) and work better. Most soldering stations come with a cleaning sponge if it is not a metal one you need to add some water.

  4. Get soldering flux, the liquid one is nicer but usually more expensive.

  5. Get a pcb holder, or glue a pice of thin foam onto cardboard or better plywood. Put your some of your components on the pcb put your foam board on top fixiate with two rubberbands turn the whole thing around and viola, you can easily solder multiple parts.

Some video tutorials I can highly recommend:
EEVblog Soldering Tutorial Everything you need to know.
NASA avionics grade soldering procedure seems a little over the top at first but every step is explained in detail and if you ever have a project that goes into a moving object like a car, a robot,a drone or an art installation it is absolutly worth the extra time.
u/FatZombieMama · 3 pointsr/portlandhomegrowers

You'll need to contain the plants inside a grow room or tent, then set up a way for fresh air to get in and smelly air to get out. You'll need a fan or blower to move air from the in-vent to the out-vent. On the out-vent end, set up a filter that the air has to go through, which will clean the odor from it.

An expensive but easy/effective way to do this is to buy a carbon scrubber with fan like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Q2ER5C

A much cheaper but DIY way is to set up a good fan and make sure all air passes through one or two layers of carbon filter fabric like this: http://www.amazon.com/Cut---Fit-Carbon-Pad-Purifiers/dp/B000U204W2

Edit: if you haven't looked at tents yet, there's a good selection at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=sr_aj?node=3480699011&ajr=0 - they make it much easier to control venting, lighting, temperature, humidity, etc. For 1-2 plants, don't go smaller than 4 square feet, and give yourself plenty of height.

u/ihaveascreenname · 2 pointsr/hackintosh

I ended up getting the Hyper 212 Plus because I read some reviews that said it was quieter than the Evo. I've never had an Evo, so I have no basis of comparison, but I just installed the Plus last night, and it was definitely quieter all day today than the stock cooler I took out of there.

On a separate but related note - I have a quad monitor setup, with 2 GPUs, 3770k, and WD Black, so my office gets pretty hot. The old fan I was using to cool the room was too loud for me to keep it on when having meetings on Skype. So I ordered a Vornado 660. On the lowest setting, it keeps me nice and cool, and is damn near silent, even from up close. So quiet in fact, that after I bought it, that's when I decided to replace the stock CPU cooler, as that was then the loudest thing in the room. So, I definitely recommend that Vornado - worth every penny.

u/ShinyAltec · 2 pointsr/rccars

Hey no problem, open the transmission area, see what size pinion is in it - and let us know, it's usually printed or stamped on it somewhere. Also take note of the size of your motor shaft, some are 5mm some are smaller.

It should be a 48P setup, most redcats are, but the owner could have put something different in it...

I can likely link you to a spur / pinion that should heat it slower but you will lose top speed a bit. So if you want that speed, you're gonna have to buy a rechargable field fan, just a little pocket fan and stick it under the lexan every 5 minutes or so for 5 minutes or so : )

the one I got was like 11 bucks(14 my bad), lasts 3 hours on the highest speed, and puts out a ton of air it just cools everything, sometimes I even strap it in and just leave it running lolz while I bash (also if it's a hot day, some water on the neck / forehead and the fan is tits bananas!)

https://www.amazon.com/Mini-Handheld-Fan-VersionTECH-Rechargeable/dp/B01HGI0S6O/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1539620517&sr=8-4&keywords=portable+fan this what I use on my rigs that are tuned to temp out if bashed hard - I just use some velcro straps and hope for the best, seems to work better than little tiny dedicated fans.

u/W1ckedWench · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I just figured this out and started using this method just recently and I'd love to share it with everyone. I took two PREUSED dryer sheets sewn them together on 3 sides leaving 1 side open (u could probably use masking tape if you don't sew). I then took a full bag of carbon, bought from pet store, and emptied the full bag into the dryer sheets then seal the dryer sheets with tape or sew. I then placed 2 pieces of carbon sheets that I cut to fit bigger than my fan hole. Put the carbon dryer sheet between the carbon sheet cuts, sandwich style, duct tape around the sides to seal everything together. Take the whole assembled filter and place over your fan. Seal with duct tape around it completely. I also put a sheet of carbon over my intake fan (I like to burn candles). If you can completely seal off that bucket you will not have a smell problem at all. I don't have computer fans in my bucket I used 4" personal desk fans, I thought it would be a little more powerful, still am unsure if they are. But I've been keeping an eye on my temp. It did raise it a degree or two but it needed that anyway. Here's a link to the carbon sheets but you could probably find it at the local hardware store and if you go thrifting keep your eye out for fans. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U204W2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Another idea for being stealth when I smoke is I take an old toilet roll, a USED dryer sheet, fold it into fourths then place a piece of carbon sheet over it. Then place on the end of the toilet paper roll. Place a rubber band around all of this to hold it to the end of the roll. I use a balloon for when I smoke. I inhale from the balloon and exhale into the roll. I can actually smoke right next to my bf and he cannot smell it at all (he doesn't smoke). It does feel silly doing all this stuff but if you have to be safe you have to be stealthy. I love you all and stay safe! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Any questions or if you need me to clarify let me know.

We recently did a trip with our 4-month-old, and it was fine! I brought her chair and SnuggleMe pillow that she sleeps in. I LOVE the sit-me-up chair, and it's lightweight and folds up easily, so it's not a hassle to travel with it. It was good to pop her in when I was getting ready and to bring her in the bathroom with me. The hotel had cribs available and set one up in the room for us. To bring all the stuff up to the room, I used a ring sling and asked for a luggage cart that I loaded up. Backpack on my back. You can unload everything and then put baby back in the carseat and go park.

If you're pumping or using bottles, you might want to have an AC adaptor for your car and bring travel size soap and an on-the-go drying rack and bottle brush. I also brought a small fan for LO, since I've dealt with a lot of wonky AC units in hotel rooms.

Ask for your room to have a microwave and fridge! I would order from Ubereats/GrubHub/Favor or something like that instead of room service. Or if the hotel has a restaurant, call in your order to pick it up downstairs and save some $$$.

Good luck!

I’m pretty much you! My 4 month old also runs hot in general and absolutely cooks in the Mesa car seat. My A/C on max doesn’t seem to cool her all that well so I bought this clip on fan ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01FFWG0I8?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title ) to use while in the car and while she’s in her stroller. Works great! I also added a stroller toy arch for a little distraction. I also keep her in her car seat instead of the rumbler for smaller errands like Target runs so that she positively associates car seat with getting out of the house and looking at new people and things. It’s gotten better little by little. I suspect she doesn’t like the Mesa car seat too much. She protested less when I rolled up a blanket and put it under her butt. It made the seat a little less deep so she wasn’t contorted/folded in half as much. Good luck!

I would consider at least sheetrocking the inside of the comms closet (no need for mud and painting). Exposed insulation will generate a lot of dust from air movement and vibration in the house. Your equipment and your family don't need it. Second, exposed studs will transmit some noise. A cheap way to improve the sound isolation is to build a double stud rock wool wall, basically 2x4s on a 2x6 sill. Let the interior sheet rock absorb the sound.

400 watts of heat in a 35 sq ft room is a lot (imagine 4 people spending several hours in that room, in summer). You're definitely going to need ventilation if you don't want equipment fans to ramp up, especially being in a well insulated room. I would suggest playing around with your layout so you can have the closet ventilate into the unfinished area without ducts, which restrict flow.

You probably want to run cable conduit where you have a finished ceiling, so locating the panel near the unfinished area may cut down on that expense.

The electrical panel will also require a minimum 3 ft in front, 30 inches wide to meet electrical code. With the rack in place, the 5 ft of that room probably isn't enough.

In your diagram, you haven't made it easy to access the back of the rack. If you're working on the rack, you will soon appreciate having 30 inches of space behind it. You would probably also enjoy a workbench big enough to hold a rack mount server, in front of the rack. You could build storage above and below the workbench. A wall mounted screen would be nice.

If it were me, I'd extend the closet all the way to the brown bench(?) and drop the reading nook. Put a low and a high vent by the laundry equipment side for ventilation. Maybe instead of the top vent, get a dual fan with thermostat. I'd put the rack against the exterior wall, with the back of the rack close to the electrical panel, so you can use the access space twice. I'd put a work bench on the outside wall where the chair is (leaving enough space to install a server in the rack). I would leave the patch panel where it is or mount it between the electrical panel and the back of the rack, and run a cable tray overhead from the patch panel out to the unfinished basement. You could easily drop cables for the rack, etc. I'd have the door to the room open into the office, opposite the work bench.

If you put the 18' wall closer to the orange thing, the extra space would let you make a W arrangement for desks instead of a J. This will be very useful if you ever have someone working with you, or maybe two people playing games. Instead of the top part of the J, you could have the reading nook there. If the storage closet is all shelves of computer stuff, I'd move the space to the comm closet and save a wall and door. If it's other things, I'd open it to the unfinished area instead.

From personal experience, I'd avoid square inside corners on the desks. Definitely spend the time/money on circular shapes on the inside corners as it will make it possible to arrange a keyboard and mouse at any angle. You probably want about a 20" radius.

Just my thoughts. You have a fun project ahead!

Same problem. Looks like the previous homeowner renovated and took out the fans at some point - oddly enough we still have the exhaust pipes leading to the roof. Didn’t realize this when we bought the house; we had the beginnings of mold/mildew problems after the first month.

Get on amazon and get you a countertop dehumidifier and always shut the door to your bathroom when you aren’t using it. They are about $50 bucks apiece. We got one similar to this one but not the same model. It should have at a minimum an auto-cutoff switch for when it’s full. Some of the fancier ones have humidity sensors and can be programmed to shut off when the ambient air reaches a certain level of humidity (e.g, 35%). This can save you on electric in the long run.

But honestly we just keep the doors to our bathrooms shut all the time - we have dogs that absolutely love the filthy bathroom trash so we’d be doing that anyway - and we keep our little humidifiers running 24/7. We have to empty them about twice a week but as they sit on the counter it’s not a big deal. Extra electric cost is worth it because the extra dry air in the bathrooms means we have pretty much zero mold or mildew so the bathrooms stay cleaner for longer.

Here is a small 8" one: https://smile.amazon.com/Holmes-Blizzard-8-Inch-Oscillating-Table/dp/B000J07RMU/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=small+oscillating+fan&qid=1555104639&s=gateway&sr=8-3

They work pretty well, I was using two for a good while. I recently upgraded to a tower fan https://smile.amazon.com/Honeywell-Quiet-Whole-Room-Tower/dp/B01N2P6V5P/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=tower+fan&qid=1555104710&s=gateway&sr=8-5

The tower fan is more powerful, quieter, and more efficient. It's worked super well for me! It takes up a good bit of space in my 2'x4'x6' tent, but I think it's worth it to have a fan, and it doesn't really take up much more floor space than the small 8" one (2x 8" fans take up more space than 1x tower fan). I hope this helps!

Ever since I've been smoking and have had to clear the smell out, I've used one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-HAWF2043-Twin-Window-Fan/dp/B000065DK8

I don't have that exact model, but I have one similar to it. Most if not all of them have switches for each fan to change from intake to exhaust. They fit in your window pretty snuggly and can clear a room of smoke pretty quickly. I usually blow hits directly into it (both from the MFLB and a bowl) and have never had any problems with smell. Of course, it will smell on the other side of the window but it seems to dissipate quicker than just simply blowing it out of the window.

Plus you can use it for its intended purpose during the late spring/early summer when it's too cold at night to use the A/C but warm enough during the day where you need to do more than just open a window to keep a room cool.

Heres the one I>I don't normally condone buying the stuff I see in this sub... But this thing is a whole nother level. I own a bed jet, which is either the last Model version of the item in the gif or a different brand all together. I bought it on Amazon for about $450. It was by far the best money I've ever spent in my entire life. It has an app that lets you control the temperature, anywhere from 72 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The turbo heat portion alone changed everything with jumping into a cold bed and being able to immediately make it warm or vice versa.
>
>Anyway, what I'm saying is this is totally worth the money.

I did recently have one done. It came back that I'm severely allergic to dust and mold, as well as a few other outdoor things to varying degrees (pigweed, ragweed, sheep sorrel, bayberry, birch, maple, mulberry, sycamore, cottonwood, cat, cockroach, grass mix, grass smut, alternaria, penicillium, and mucor racemosus, plus the dust mites)

I've already done a lot of what you said, to little effect. My nose has been an ongoing issue this year. Earlier in the year I had deviated septum surgery as well as endoscopic sinus surgery to scrape everything clean. Prior to that I just got really clogged at some point, mucus was draining into my throat and lungs and I was coughing it up, etc.

After the surgery I was perfectly fine for probably about 4-5 months. I breathed fine and honestly it was incredible. Then a bit over a month ago, I went on a cruise to the Bahamas and when I got back I started getting stuffed up nose symptoms again. Returned to the doctor, they looked up there with their flashlight and said it doesn't look like a sinus infection, which led to the allergy testing.

Since then (about 2 weeks) I've done everything I've read and can think of. I've used both loratadine and Zyrtec, and honestly neither of these are lessening my symptoms whatsoever, which makes me think it might not be allergy related at all. I also think it's weird that the congestion is always on just the right side of my face, whereas the left side is completely clear, which is at least something.

I've cleaned my entire apartment from top to bottom, scrubbed the walls, gotten new pillows, I've always washed my sheets regularly. Used the vacuum to sweep my couch. Regularly replace the air filter in the ac unit, complex gives us these for free. Got a mold kit testing the air quality right now. Ive lived in this apartment for about three years now. The hot water heater broke at one point and soaked part of the carpet, but the pros all came and fans were set up under the carpet for a few days, but still I'm testing the air quality like I said.

Before my surgery when I was really suffering, I did order a pretty high end air purifier (Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01728NLRG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xPh6BbDATAW67) and had it in here for about a week. It had settings on it that supposedly indicated whether the air quality was good, medium bad, or severe bad, and it never indicated anything but good. I ended up sending it back because I needed the money for rent that month, never re ordered cause I just figured the problem lay elsewhere.

I live in Florida now for three years, all in this apartment, after growing up in the north for 20+ years. I've also tried Flonase like my doc recommended. Breathe right strips help me breathe at night and alleviate some symptoms, as does Vicks, but once the strip comes off, everything goes to hell again.

The most recent discovery I've made is that sometimes the saline nasal spray can kind of alleviate things for a little bit, so I've been spraying a lot of that up my nose since there isn't supposed to be a limit on how much of that to use. But sometimes it doesn't do a damn thing either. Of course I've done the sinus rinsing too with the Neilmed squeeze bottle, again sometimes that's helpful and other times I feel more clogged than before.

Again, even though I've been diagnosed with these allergies, I just think it's odd none of these antihistamines are helping at all. The ENT has an allergy shots/drops program they're recommending, but I wanted to come home first after my appointment and try to clean things up before going into that. Like I said, for those first 4-5 months after surgery I was perfect, and then things took a turn for the worse for whatever reason, right around the time of that cruise, which I find suspicious, but they said it ain't infected in there and it's been 6 weeks now, so I would think if it was sickness I'd have kicked it by now.

Only other thing I can figure is all the humidity is outta the air now cause Florida season changed over, and my nose is not liking this drier weather. Nothing I used or the way I cleaned changed from when I was feeling good to now.

Sorry if that was a lot, but I appreciated your indepth response and any insight you might have. There's so many fucking variables to this thing it's maddening trying to narrow a cause or solution down

u/Kylista · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

As other posters have mentioned, sometimes if a portable air conditioner doesn't seem like it's working, it's because there isn't enough circulation.

I was in a situation similar to yours, trying to cool down a living area with vaulted ceilings in the summer with a 14,000btu portable AC, and it didn't seem like it was doing shit. It was nice to sit in front of, but 3 feet away it was hot as hell.

The solution was around air circulation. I actually ended up opening a bedroom down the hall and opening a window and putting a box fan in it to blow air out.

2 hours later the living area was pleasantly cool and so was my bedroom, which was a nice bonus.

my AC unit is https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Dual-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-14S/dp/B0028AYQDC and it works wonderfully.

Then I would recommend getting a few of these heaters; I used 3 them to heat a ~800 sq ft house a couple of years ago for the whole winter, and it only raised my electric by about $50 to keep it around 75 degrees. Contrast that with using the baseboard heaters in the same house, and the savings was nearly $400/mo (baseboard heat is highly inefficient at best, especially if it's older - running it put our electric bill over $600/mo... yeah, no.) They have a built-in thermostat and cut off to save power when the ambient temperature gets high enough. I still have them and break them out to heat up the bathroom before showers every winter; they're still going strong!

Also, you might want to check out /r/personalfinance to maybe help out your situation a little more and get better advice about the financial aspects of what you're going through.

u/c0de76 · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

The only way to get rid of humidity is with an AC unit, a dehumidifier will get rid of moisture in the air but will also act as a heater. If you want to be cooler, at least at night in the FL summer, get a window fan like this. You need two windows in your room. You place the fan and one and open the other so it can pull in or exhaust air. The idea is not to move air across your body to cool you like a room fan, but to constantly exchange the air in your room with fresh air outside. This prevents heat build-up in your room that is inevitable even with the windows open. Or for a bit more money buy a window AC unit.

Find someone who uses the Rotobrush or similar equipment on the air ducts, there is huge difference between that and just the typical "super" vacuum trucks. http://imgur.com/a/ebR1Z

These are great air purifiers: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/

Also change the HVAC filter, buy the good ones, change it before and after the duct cleaning.

We also installed this, it works really well and was super simple to install.. (Bought from AirstarSupply, they support the warranty and its not a knock-off) http://www.amazon.com/REME-RGF-Air-Purification-System/dp/B00WSUK12M

Change the filters in your vacuum cleaner. If you have the funds I highly suggest a Neato (not a Roomba, do your research) that will run every day.

u/deadaluspark · 16 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have one thats rated for down to 41 degrees. I had to use it extensively on the place I just moved into. It had leaks all over that I had to fix up to bring down the humidity (I live in a very rainy city, and when I moved in, it was at 75% humidity inside with the temp at 50 degrees. Not good.) I had it running, with no heat on in the house, constantly, for the first month. During the night it was dropping to about 48-50 degrees in the house and I had zero problems. I've gotten it down to 35% humidity in here and have been able to completely manage the mold problems that were beginning to form in the house.

Now, all that being said, I can't recommend it as BIFL simply because, well, I've only had it a few months. The other problem is, this is technically an older model, and the newer model from the same company is not rated for down to 41 degrees, which is why I purchased the older model to begin with.

Here is the Amazon link to the dehumidifier in question:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UWP07LK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

There's definitely negative reviews in there. The two main things to remember with this model is that it has an internal filter with an oil with a very low viscosity in it, meaning if it has been on its side, or turned over, or anything, you need to stand it up right for like a week before to start it up, to ensure that the oil is in the proper place and doesn't end up killing the unit (the result of many bad reviews.). The other is people complaining that it drips all over their floor. In my experience, if you mis-install the bucket, you can get a leak, and when you remove the bucket, if there is still water draining, it WILL drip, drip, drip into a little reservoir, but that fills up fast, and then will drip onto the floor. Basically, you just have to take your time with this thing and not expect to set it up in five minutes after getting it in the mail and expecting it to be perfect without ever looking at it again.

It's really a great dehumidifier if you pay attention to it and are patient with it. Once again, the main reason I am suggesting it is because of my success at running it at low temperatures. I am not suggesting that this model is BIFL considering I have not owned it long enough to call it that.

Good luck!

we had a Vornado 723B (no longer available) substantially similar in design, except all black and without the handle; the Vornado 783 looks like a taller version of 723B

our 723B lasted us about ten years of heavy use during summers, and simply stopped working late last fall — i will attempt to revive it this summer; the feet on 293 are a good idea — ours had just the bare loop of aluminum pipe, so we improvised with foam pipe insulation to reduce vibration on a hard floor; once that was fixed it was pretty quiet; i really like this design because it can be aimed precisely and it is a good use of materials

in comparison, it looks like the replacement model for 723B is the Vornado 660; Sweethome likes it but based on imagery, i think the base may be more prone to breakage and it doesn't look nearly as good (i prefer matte plastic finishes)

we also have a smaller Vornado, plus a small Vorrnado heater-fan, and both have survived 10+ years but with a lighter duty cycle

My School is a bit different. Because we're in Hawaii all of our classrooms are open air all year round. But it's already getting to be unbearable and will be unbearable in like August.

I'm not sure where they sell these other than hardware stores and amazon. But these fans are STRONG and amazingly quiet. I have two in my classroom, soon to be three for the next upcoming school year. If there's anyone else that has a better solution I would love that as well. Our buildings are so old we can't get an AC because it would short circuit the building.

u/pacamara · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Oh, absolutely! I'm so glad this helped you. (I've got an October baby that's 5 months old now. It's a great month! Congrats!!)

Here's a bonus tip on peacefully quarantining cats: I came up with it because my husband and I had two cats who would keep us up all night, and if we shut them out of the bedroom, they would rattle the door and shred the carpet (in an apartment!!) until it had a big bald patch on it:

Shut the door and put a box fan in front of it. So easy! Here's an example, although I've seen them for around $20 other places

Some cats may not care... But this stopped ours from clawing under the door and making noise. They didn't like the air blowing in their faces. Also, bonus white noise! It was so simple, I was mad at myself for not thinking of it before permanent damage was done. Still, it saved us from losing our deposit on two subsequent apartments. :)

Applying sprays/traps as people mentioned will help lower the numbers, but it doesn't remove the conditions that attract silverfish/bugs in general the first place. If you don't get rid of silverfish you might end up attracting house centipedes (ive heard) and i'd rather gtfo than deal with that lol. This is what I did to keep them out of my dorm:

- Number one thing is to keep your suite clean, especially for people renting in older homes off campus. Silverfish eat starchy carbs. Declutter your space: no piles of paper, cardboard, nor clothes, nor food crumbs on the ground. place things in plastic tubs and food in tight sealed containers if you have to. Vacuum biweekly, do laundry often (and this includes your bedsheets)

- Additionally silverfish love humid environments. And its gonna be humid a long time cuz of the rain october - april. I bought this dehumidifier from amazon a while back. A lot of bugs also dislike the smell of spices. I purchased cinnamon essential oil from amazon and just placed a tiny bit in vials around the room. With the combination of those two, I stopped seeing them completely within a couple days.

u/WubbaLubbaDubStep · 3 pointsr/shroomers

Yeahhhh ya gotta fan those good. Great advice.

It's always a long process, though. You don't start growing shrooms to have them in a few weeks... you gotta plan 3-4 months out.

Takes me about 12 weeks from start to finish for even just the first flush.

Edit: I forgot... CONGRATS! Seeing them first sprout the first time is such a cool experience. Happy for ya bud!

Edit 2: Speaking of fanning... this bad boy has been working wonders

I've tried a number of different ducts (this one and this one along with fans of various sizes and CFM ratings and haven't found anything that works satisfactorily. I've gone all the way up to mounting a 40mm x 40mm x 28mm fan on the x-carriage and that gives the best result, but still not good enough. I also tried putting a big 120mm fan on the back of my printer, but that didn't do much either.

I have a HG/BM setup and just dump the beans into the sieve then hold the sieve over the fan which I have pointing straight up from the ground. Gently swirling the beans around cools the beans to room temperature in less than a minute. I normally roast 1/2 lb at a time, but I've done up to a lb and the setup still works well. I pretty much have to use it on the back porch or the garage because any chaff that's still with beans will get blown out almost immediately.

You could definitely get away with a less expensive fan, but I found it on sale for $50 and I use around the house for other things when I'm not roasting so win-win.

Oh it looked pretty far in pic #29. You can still probably lower it to just a few inches away if its only a 90 watter, especially because LED and fluorescents are a more diffused source of lighting. I have a 400W HPS only 12 inches from the tops of mine with no burning, and CFLs and T-5s less than a half-inch away with no burning.

Regardless of how close they are, I'd also recommend a cheap small internal circulation fan like this or whatever you can find at a store near you, for the flowering area. It will improve stem strength, reduce chances of mold/mildew/algae/some types of bugs, and often keep temperatures down by helping your ventilation system.

absolutely true. However you might be interested in what I found on another subreddit, i can't remember which subreddit. Its a 500w super efficient air conditioner, good for 200sqft. Right now my Kill-a-watt displays 535 watts, and that includes my Desktop (T61 laptop 44w), second monitor (26" 25w), and lamp (23w CFL), a bunch of USB devices and router (10w), and the air conditioner is on low setting. I've only had to set it to high once. Today's temperature was 93. It helped me get through the 104 temperatures we had a few weeks. All I had to do was front run the heat around 1pm. One of those tiny $100 harbor freight 900w generators could easily do that for about $2 a day in gas. Or two 300w panels and an inverter, probably wouldn't even need a battery. Its doable now days! Also I notice 90% of my heat is from the roof because I have no shade.

It's just a fan, it won't change the temperature of your home, but can help move air from one room to another, or to blow air directly at you making you feel cooler like any other fan.

If moving air is your priority I'd suggest looking at something like this, very powerful: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-655704-Purpose-Pivoting-Utility/dp/B006O6FA22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452175214&sr=8-1&keywords=shop+fan

So I have a wall AC unit in my living/dining room but it's too far from the bedroom and even with creative fan placement, zero cool air gets into the bedroom. In my bedroom there is already a pre-installed hose/vent/hole through the wall underneath the window that the previous tenant placed for their portable unit. However, after some additional research I decided that a dual hose unit was a must, so I think I'm going to end up using the window for the two hoses and NOT this pre-installed hole in the wall. I really wanted to go for a window unit, but decided against it due to my window design - I hope this was the right decision (sigh). I ended up going with this model.

4x4 tent with 4 plants and a decent veg time and you could get about a lb or maybe a little less every 5 months.

4x4 set up is a lot less than $1000

tent $100 https://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-Hydroponic-Indoor-Growing/dp/B00H9O6UJ0

light $170 https://www.amazon.com/iPower-Digital-Dimmable-System-Reflector/dp/B005GYRZV2

exhaust fan $100 https://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-ACDF6-Active-Air-Inline/dp/B00KWYJQYA

clip fans $20 - $40 https://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-Clip-Stands-anywhere/dp/B000U9V47E

You still need buckets and soil as well as seeds or clones, but the bulk of what you need is right there.

You could swap out the HID lamp for some leds easily enough. Or upgrade to slightly better quality items, but you can get started for pretty cheap if you want.

Add a second set up like this and you can go perpetual grow and harvest several times a year.

Very similar to what I have, works pretty well and is only $130. If not for this year, maybe set aside a few bucks here and there for next year (since this problem isn't going to go away)?

And remember you don't need it blasting all the time, just when needed to keep an area comfortable for a few weeks while the little bit of summer has it's fit and leaves. :)

Just got back from buying one of these portable units from Best Buy. The Washington Square location had about 10 of them in stock, priced at $449 on the floor. Price-matching to Amazon was easy, literally just showed them my phone, bringing the price to $349.

I spent a couple of hours researching models in the $300-$500 range and this one was consistently rated well (#1 selling model on Amazon too).

Hope this helps!

u/jamilbk · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Edit: This similar thread may be useful.

I just spent forever designing the power system for my tiny house and if I can offer one piece of advice, use propane for heating. It's much cheaper, efficient, and lower maintenance than electric systems. Plus, since you're in the Bay Area, a low-power window A/C unit like this 450 W fridgidaire should suffice. You can always add a $30 1800 W electric space heater later.

Keep in mind you'll be at least tripling your expected power draw to account for inefficiencies and battery depth-of-discharge. So if you plan to use 6 kWh / day, your battery bank and solar panels should be sized for 18 kWh / day. That's about 10 large 12V 155 Ah batteries. Nearly 1,000 lbs of weight. Since your wool insulation is only about half the R-value of spray foam, you'll need to account for that as well.

tldr; Save yourself the added weight and cost of additional solar, batteries, and inverter and just go with a window unit and propane stove or in-floor radiant system via tankless water heater.

You can use a powerful fan to blow into your room after your shower. It will spread the moisture out and the ac will take care of it.

Like a air mover

Expensive option is get an air purifier like this one.

Cheap option is window fans for exhaust but another thing that might help is a splatter guard for your pan. Won't stop smoke but also won't steam your food like a lid would. I use one when frying and searing, it definitely makes a difference in how irritated my eyes get afterwards. Here's an option specifically for odor reduction, but I just have a normal mesh one and it still works great.

I am in a similar apartment. It gets stifling once the days really warm up and thee sun starts setting further to the N. Install some light blocking curtains if you can.

I bought this unit Honeywell MN10CESWW 10,000 BTU Portable A C Which works great in terms of blowing ice cold air. The apartment has a built in hole in the wall for attaching the air hose.

However, even thought the AC unit works great, it just can't keep up with the heat in terms of cooling the entire space. The studio apt was well above 75 for a few months in a row. Sitting in front of the AC fan stream worked well enough to have a comfortable-ish evening after work. I did not install curtains because I didn't want to deal with patching the hardware holes once I move. I might cave and put them in this year though.

u/gooberfaced · 2 pointsr/homeowners

> Do you mean semi-permanently open it and have a fan fitted into it?

How you choose to do it would be up to you and how well you were able to match fan size to window size.
Any way you can exhaust the hot air- getting rid of it and bringing in cool air from other areas in the house is much more efficient that trying to cool air that is already hot down.

Open the window and measure the width and max height you have available then google "window fan" and find the one that matches the size opening most closely. These types of fans typically have side panel extensions to fit odd spaces.

Example here, here, and here.

u/Freeflyer18 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I've been using (4) of these 8" Lil' Blizzard fans 24/7 for about 3 years straight, and they have been nothing but rock solid(knock on wood). You would have to customize a mount for your tent pole, but it's completely doable and has a really ideal amount of airflow(2 speeds) in the 4x4 or smaller environment. This is my setup in veg. I also run this same thing under my flowering tents canopy.

I live in Boston in a house built over 100 years ago. Needless to say, we either have to keep it chilly or pay a lot to heat it. We opt for the former, but we do take some other steps to minimize how the cost. My house is a rental, so we can't do actual work on it, but here are some tips for easy ways to keep your heating bill down:

  • Seal your doors and windows. Put plastic over the windows. They have specially made plastic for this that you basically tape up and then shrink with a hair dryer to tighten. It's not the best looking thing ever, but if you do it well, it can actually look fine. In terms of doors, door sweeps and weather stripping will do wonders for preventing drafts. You know how they say a team is only as strong as its weakest player? Well beefing up the insulation in your walls and attic won't do very much if the air can just get in through the doors or windows.

  • Put on a sweater. We keep our house at just over 60 degrees in the winter. This means that we're wearing clothes most of the time. Sweatpants, sweaters, fleeces, wool socks, slippers. This is by far what has saved us the most money on our heating bill.

  • Get a space heater. I have a nice one. It oscillates, has a remote, multiple heat modes, and a timer. I can turn it on before bed and have it turn off after an hour (or whatever I set it to). I can also use the remote to turn it on when my alarm goes off, hit snooze, and it'll be nice and warm when my alarm goes off again.
u/sixsexsix · 1 pointr/microgrowery

>A dehumidifier outside of the tent might work.

Ambient RH is 14% currently. I live in an arctic desert, so a dehumidifier outside the tent won't do much. I got something like this on the way. I don't expect it to do much , but if it gets me down 5% or so I'd be happy with it. I'm also using CaCl2 AKA Damprid, and it's brought levels down about 10% or so.

What is your RH in the tent with the PM plants? Nice looking undercurrent you got there. I'm assuming your rez is inside the tent then?

u/RickDripps · 0 pointsr/homeowners

Get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TTV2QS

You can set the temperature to something and it will turn off once that temperature gets reached. Then when it gets colder it will turn back on.

It makes some white noise but hopefully the baby won't have issues with this. I use one of these in my office upstairs and in the basement. They work spectacularly. I just set it to 72 while the thermostat for the rest of the house stays at 68 and I'm comfortable.

It'll oscillate and whatnot but I usually just aim it away from me and it does a great job of heating up entire rooms even with the door open. It is blowing the heat directly onto me it gets annoying.

i'm running same size tent and i will run this in the muggy summer time. although you should keep your exhaust fan on 24/7 not only to keep humidity low but also for a constant supply of fresh air. you dont really need to run one honestly but it does help reduce mold chances and that.

u/chefandy · 1 pointr/news

I found your solution

They make much cheaper models, but those are really only suited for hot/dry climates. I'm assuming Philly is pretty humid. This unit actually takes the humidity out of the air and evaporates it to cool off the room. It's cheaper than an ac and will work better than 4 fans blowing hot air on you

u/leavesontrees · 1 pointr/funny

You will be fine with a smaller window AC unit.

Something like http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FRA052XT7-Mini-Window-Conditioner/dp/B003F4TH6G/ref=tag_stp_s2f_edpp_air_co15er

I have had good luck with frigidaire and haier A/Cs in the past.

I would recommend that you at least give craigslist a search and see if there is anyone getting rid of a unit. I was able to pick up a similar small window AC for 20 bucks offseason last year. The little Haier kept me cold all summer long.

u/crmickle · 2 pointsr/Allergies

https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G

If you look at the last image in the preview for this Honeywell air purifier you can see the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rating) for a few different impurities. You should try to find these ratings for your air purifier to compare, the higher the number the better.

Otherwise, look into allergen reducing mattress and pillow covers if you haven't already. Washing sheets regularly should also help a little.

I hope you end up finding some relief, let me know if you have any more questions.

The type of unit I linked to is usually allowed where normal window air conditioners aren't.

I've never heard of an apartment complex disallowing the type of air conditioner I linked to.

But yeah, if it's cool get a nice Dehumidifier. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-70-Pint-Dehumidifier-Effortless-Humidity/dp/B00UWP07LK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1518672680&sr=8-6&keywords=dehumidifier&dpID=316rM8FWZvL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I own the 50 pint dehumidifier which I use in the winter, and I own the air conditioner I linked to, which I use in the summer.

I recommend both!

u/Momentumjam · 2 pointsr/GoodValue

OP, I know that this is old, but if you're still looking for something to cool you down, I'd look into a window fan. I own this model, and I can't imagine I would be able to function without it. You can set one fan to blow air in, and the other to blow air out. It keeps air constantly circulating. I can't say that it will work as well as a window AC unit, but it is much cheaper to buy, and run.

That's what I would probably use. I'd probably get HVAC filters, and modify it with something like this. That way you have a frame and it costs around 21 bucks for everything. 10 dollar box fan, 9 dollar carbon filter cut to fit, and 2 super cheap HVAC filters that are the same size as your fan.

u/knitpixie · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I would stick with a cool mist humidifier because otherwise you're using something that boils water. That sounds like a huge safety hazard. We have this one and I love it. It has an auto off feature when it runs out of water so you don't have to worry about it continuing to run and damaging the device.

u/ignoretheyam · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I think your routine looks pretty good. My recommendations would be to add a moisturizing toner with hyaluronic acid twice a day, switch to a non-foaming cleanser, and add an occlusive at the end of your routine.

Also, because you’re in the desert, I would strongly recommend buying a humidifier. I live in a tropical environment (Florida) and I still sleep with my humidifier on high every night. It helps so much.

You mentioned your skin being sensitive: I am too, and all of the below products have not bothered me at all. Don’t use the honey mask if you’re allergic to bees.

Honeywell, Winix, or Coway are ones that I have used or see recommended the most often. You want one that is true HEPA and has charcoal filters that you have to change reuglary (the charcoal filters, the HEPA is usually reusable and you may have to change it every year or few years).

I haven't bought one in a while, but this Winix looks like a really solid deal at the moment: https://www.amazon.com/Winix-5300-2-Purifier-PlasmaWave-Reducing/dp/B01D8DAYBA/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=hepa+air+purifier&qid=1556562788&s=gateway&sr=8-14

First, I'd caution against trying to make your furnace work harder than it needs to. I've been down that road and had issues ranging from whistling to shutting down due to overheat during cold times and frosting up in hot ones. Get the most basic pleated and you'll still trap a lot.

I then moved to a mix of air cleaners, and the big round Honeywell are the top performers but loud. I use mine when I'm doing construction projects or moving furniture or major cleaning. This proved to be very effective, quiet, and long lasting. I tossed my first one after 15 years of being on full time. For replacement filters I would vaccum out the front every few months and then when the expensive HEPA one was grey and stinky I bought the high end furnace filters exactly twice as big and cut them in half with a scissors, and used painters tape to seal in place.

A good vaccum will do a lot to help if you have carpets. A bagged Oreck with upgraded HEPA bags would be my choice, there are others but be sure to go bagged.

Many years ago, I had that issue with a T2i. The screen backlight is part of your problem. On newer cameras you can flip out the screen, but for you turning down the brightness may help. Once we switched to cameras with articulating screens, the problem went away entirely.

This AC is your best bet if your going to try and run it off solar. It only draws 400 watts on startup.

If your going with a generator setup, get a 2000 watt generator and a big AC. You can build a quiet box and plumb the generator into your vans gas tank. Bonus points for connecting an arduino/rasberryPi to a remote start for the generator, so that the generator/AC only runs when the van gets too warm.

I used this Frigidaire AC for my DIY glycol chiller build. It was easy to dissemble and the copper piping was pretty easy to bend as there is only one large diameter pipe that needed to be re-positioned.

You can really use any air conditioner but be sure it has a mechanical switch. Units with digital controls may not work well if it needs additional input once it turns back on.

Have you considered one of these Holmes window fans? I've seen a ton of them at Goodwill, recently. Perhaps you could check your local Goodwill.

I have this Lasko box fan. It has a lot of power. It'll blow air, for sure. You aren't going to want to sit directly in its stream, though, or it'll dry out your throat and give you a headache. If it's cool outside, you can stick it on HIGH in the window, and your room will cool down in a couple of minutes.

If you need simple air circulation on the cheap, get a knock-off Vornado Honeywell air circulator. It'll move air around your bedroom fairly well. Just make sure you aim it across the room at a corner, like this.

I adopted 2 basic honeywell desk fans that I hooked up to a smart socket. It's nice being able to say "alexa, more wind!" and then have them kick on instantly. The pair moves enough air to keep me from overheating so I'm relatively happy with the setup.

If I was starting from scratch, I would explore using one of these utility fans. It looks like a poor man's headwind at 1/5th the price.

As far as air purifiers, I purchased this one a couple months ago and am thoroughly impressed. It's currently set up near the kitty litter box and does an excellent job of eliminating those awful odors. It's sleek and quiet and covers a great amount of room compared to others.

It's not quite small enough to be a desk fan (it could fit, it might be too much), but it's compact and still moves a lot of air for its size. I've had this same fan for over 7 years now and it still works great, I'm using it right now.

u/CardboardHeatshield · 3 pointsr/engineering

The box fan is gonna be pretty shitty at generating the pressure delta you need to pull air through the filter, theres just way too much slippage around the vanes.

By the time you buy the correct fan and get the sealing figured out, you might as well have spent the $300.

Also, you can get a decent HEPA filter on amazon for about half that. I've got this one and I love it: https://www.amazon.com/Winix-5300-2-Purifier-PlasmaWave-Reducing/dp/B01D8DAYBA/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1524843388&sr=8-8&keywords=hepa+filter+winix

I have the older model of this.

Very happy with it. I've owned two for about four years and been running them 24/7 without any problems. It has a hepa filter (allergens and all that) and a charcoal filter (odors). You change the charcoal filter more often (replacement filter packs typically come with 1 hepa and 3 - 6 charcoal). I change the hepa about every 18 months. I think you can also put two charcoal filters in it, or not use the hepa and go with just charcoal, if all you care about is odors and not allergens.

Only time I got VIP was at Vendetta, and you got access to bleacher seats. Compared to general access who had to stand the whole event, fucking worth it. Went to another event, the one with the Oxxymiron battle, and VIP just got closer standing room to the stage, so not worth it that time.

All I can say is bring cash for merch or the bar, wear comfy shoes since you'll be standing, a charge battery for your phone, and if you got one of those handheld electric fans, might wanna bring one because the body heat of the crowd turns the place into an oven later

Got some various DIY glycol chiller questions:

  • I plan to use this AC unit. Do I need to implement a delay time between cycling the unit on and off? If so, how long?

  • When/how often should I recirculate the glycol, and how long should I do it each time?

  • Is there an ideal temperature difference between the glycol reservoir and the fermenter temperatures? Or in other words, should I change up the glycol temperatures depending on whether I'm fermenting or cold crashing?

  • If the answer is yes to the above, I'm assuming then I should get a heater to heat the glycol up if I want to change the temperature of it. What heater would you recommend? I was thinking of this one.

u/ppardee · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Go old-school and get a canary (or a few).

Some filament are absolutely going to produce toxic 'fumes' (which includes particles that aren't actually fumes). I have printed ABS in my enclosure and there is a layer of ABS coating the inside of my enclosure panels from the fumes.

Carbon filter material is dirt cheap. (https://www.amazon.com/All-Filters-CP-6005-Cut-Carbon-Purifiers/dp/B000U204W2/) So are fans. It's pretty easy to put together a filter unit that will handle the inside of a 3D printer enclosure (and the printer should be enclosed). You can also get carbon pellets used in aquariums for much less, but I haven't found a good way to use those for air filtering, which makes my face sad.

You're right that it's really hard to find good, solid data, but PETG currently appears to be safe. PLA appears to be relatively safe. ABS doesn't appear to be safe and is pain to print.

Assume we start with ice at 0C (32F) and warm it to water at 18C (64F) over the course of 5 hours. If my math is correct, bucket cooler will cool at a rate of 300 BTU/hour. If the fan is running at 10 watts, that is about 35 BTU/hour of heat. So net, we get 265 BTU/hour from this kludge.

Or I can buy a real A/C unit for $129 that generates 19x more cooling (5,000 BTU/hr). If the bucket and the fan cost more than $7 (which they will), the A/C unit is cheaper (per unit of cooling) to buy, and will consume less electricity (per unit of cooling) than the bucket. It will also be quieter and much less work to operate.

u/Boilermaker7 · 2 pointsr/WaltDisneyWorld

A battery powered hand fan (Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGI0S6O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XU91BbVG97NBA). It maks a huge difference on those 100 degree, 100% humidity days.

u/paycheck_day · 1 pointr/containerhomes

Hey there I assume you want something like this: Portable AC

I would recommend against these as they are very inefficient since the ac unit is inside a lot heat goes into the space it is trying to cool. Instead I would get a Mini split AC like this one They are much more efficient as all of the parts that get hot are outside the house.

If you don't want to be mounting anything outside then at the least I would get a portable ac with dual intake/exhaust hoses. like this The reason these are better than the single hose ones is these dual hose ones don't make your home have a negative air pressure which causes it to suck hot air into your house through gaps in doors and windows.

BTW I don't know anything about the individual products I linked they are just examples.

u/FightOrFlight · 1 pointr/CysticFibrosis

This filter has been great for my 8 month old daughter with CF. Here are a few tips though:

  • They say the filter lasts a year, they don't. If you're using acetylcysteine or changing diapers near it, it'll last 3 months. When they go bad you'll notice a funky wet dog smell coming from it. That's $10 every 3 months.

  • Buy bulk carbon pre-filters and swap them out every month. You'll see a noticeable difference in air quality by doing this step. I buy these, cut them to twice the size of the filter, fold them in half, and attach them to the filter. Way better bang for buck thus way. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000U204W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_R4RSBbD51NZ2R

  • Consumer Reports noted that the only time these clean the air is when they're set to high and on 24/7. According to CR, this set doesn't have a lot of horsepower. The most it can clean is a small room.

  • You should also count on spending more on your electricity bill. On this unit I spend an extra $10ish per month since it's on 24/7.

All in, you're looking at $180-200 a year to run an air filter this size. More if you get a larger unit with a more expensive filter.
u/0letdown · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

I would say that some small clip-on fans would be your best bet in that space. They are nice for size but they push out very little air. If you take this route I recommend you purchase at least 3-4, one for each corner of the tent. u/Fifthdread · 1 pointr/minipainting

If you have a spray booth with a fan, than you should be good as long as you run the exaust through an air filter system. I have a paint booth with a small filter in the front, but if it were me, I'd have Carbon Filters strapped to the exaust for additional filtration. As long as the spray booth has sufficient suction to pull the air through the filter, than you should be good.

You are correct to paint the surfaces. I recommend a product like this.

The humidifiers you have chosen are too small. Get two, one for each side of your home. And get bigger ones. Maybe like this one.

I would also take pictures of the water condensing on the walls. Document everything you are having to do including the money you are having to spend to make your home "livable" and protect the property of the the landlord. Stay in communication with the landlord and ask if you can deduct some or all of these expenses from the rent since you are helping to prevent mold damage to the property. Mold is dangerous and it is nothing to mess around with. I don't know what the laws are where you live, but the landlord should be inclined to help with this problem.

If the problem persists or the landlord is not responsive it might be a good idea to find another place to live when your lease is finished.

u/notwearingwords · 0 pointsr/Frugal

I'm not sure what your question is exactly. At no point did I claim that one was somehow creating more heat than the laws of physics allow. If you're confused about the difference between a radiator, which heats a room slowly and retains heat, and a fan/ceramic/etc (all known as space heaters afaik - like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000TTV2QS/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?qid=1405371454&sr=1-12&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70), then google might help.

They both heat "space" but have different purposes. Ones that directly heat the air around them use more electricity than those which heat a liquid which retains and radiates the heat in order to bring up the temperature of a larger enclosed space. But don't take my word for it. Look up the specs for portable oil filled heaters vs heated element heaters for the same square footage, as your area might have something more efficient than what is available in mine, or your needs for the space might be different (enclosed room vs desk in an open warehouse, for instance).

Since only u/roadbird21 really answered this I'll jump in. Do you own the house or rent it? Is it long term rent (like you know you'll have it for 5+ years ) or short term? And do you have alot of money or a little?

Short term: (if you don't own the house/don't have a ton of money)Dehumidifiers are a great option. Dry air is not as sweat inducing as wet air is. Also get one or two portable AC units. As large as you can afford (by BTU) such as this one.

These work by having an exaust for hot air. Route this up the stairs and outside the nearest window. You can buy extra tubing from home Depot. Get enough AC for double the room size.

Medium term (you have more money, a long rent that's several years). Something like this would be good

Long term: you have a long rent, own the property, or have a ton of money

This is what your looking for

Note, I do a ton of DIY projects, including plumbing and electrical for my house. I probably would get someone to install this anyhow. Also, if your renting. You need to talk with your land lord.

u/8lbIceBag · 4 pointsr/techsupportgore

I line the case with this stuff. It does a decent enough job without cutting to much airflow.

http://www.amazon.com/Cut-Fit-Carbon-Pad-Purifiers/dp/B000U204W2/

Very fine dust still gets through and coats heatsink fins but the dust is to small to bridge the gab between two fins to begin clumping up and clogging airflow. Looks like a fine layer of chalk dust after 6 months to a year.

u/user865865 · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Doesn't make a big difference, but a lot of people think you have to pull through it. Buy a quality filter and good duct tape to seal up any seams and you'll be fine.

But by pushing air through, you can't use the prefilter wrapped around the outside of the carbon filter (well, you could, but it would be useless). I got this prefilter and put it over the inlet to the tent.

Not sure if you're up for an electric one, I LOVE this, rechargeable, portable, and last more than 2 hours.

Thank you, TheSingingKid! Seems I have spend a bit more (although I have already spent a lot to set things up) I found two types. One is conventional and cheap, like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UWP07LK/

The other is crawlspace specific and expensive, like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LW8WRUP/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

Do I need the 2nd one, powerful but almost 5 times pricier, to make things right?

You can just build a r134a system and get around licensing. But, the cost effective solution is using a cheap window unit and ducting it into the space.

Humidifier

The AC unit will act as a dehumidifier as well. I got a 12k btu device that I keep in the tent and I vent the hot air from it into the duct that pulls heat through my lamp and out through the carbon filter into my laundry room. Similar to this one.

This setup has been flawless in my 5x5x7.

I have two window-mounted AC units. Each are capable of cooling a 10x10 room without a problem. I'm hoping for $40 obo. I'll see if I can get some pictures up soon. Here's a picture of the older one. Here's the newer one and [the amazon link] (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F4TH6G/) that I got it from a year ago. I hadn't cleaned them up when I took the photos, but I will do so before you buy them.

The newer one has been sold. Thank you /u/chz_plz.

I bought this one last year and it works wonders. The large one is $170 but they have smaller ones as well. My sister has a smaller one and it works just as well. (But for a smaller area).

So it looks like the one I’ve bought is an old model now. But I’d check this brand and see if they have a new one at a price you like.

$27 for a 4" fan? He'd be better off with some of these, less noise and more airflow.

I had a Soleus that I got from Menards and the pump quit on me in about 2 months. I threw it out and got this. Works great.

Two questions:

  1. As split-screen (and even LAN) console games are so rare these days, what did you guys play?

  2. That (I'm assuming) heater/tower thing looks strikingly similar to the Lasko one I just bought. How well does your heat up your home?
u/dianeruth · 2 pointsr/Frugal

If you stick with fans, a good trick for when it gets really hot is to stick a bowl of ice in front of the fan.

A window air conditioner is also an option.

u/DrWangerBanger · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I have this one and I'm very happy with it. I only recently found out you're not supposed to use extension cords with it (or any other dehumidifiers) so maybe keep that in mind.

I got this and it works wonderfully.

It seems you can even put it in the cigarette charger.

I don´t know if this is an option for you. And maybe I´m way off with how much power it actually uses, but apparently it takes 240 watts. I haven´t been looking into the whole solarpower thing yet, but 2 solar panels might cover it. And it has a lot of good reviews, that´s always a plus.

Sploofy refills are already $10 a peice.

if I bought this and this I could cut like 30 cores out of it but I'm still not confident that cutting them is a good idea.
