If you are moving to NYC and you are after cheap furniture, thrift stores like Salvation Army and Housing Works often have good furniture for reasonable prices. The SA on West 46th St & 10th has quite a lot of furniture on their top floor and a pretty high turnover. Pretty sure they treat their stuff so bedbugs aren't an issue, too (at least I've never heard of any problems). The Brooklyn Ikea is also good.

P.S. Seriously consider buying furniture that has storage space if you possibly can. Storage ottomans, beds with drawers, etc. It will make a huge difference in tiny New York real estate, trust me. You will also learn to love over door storage like this and this!

P.P.S. Consider checking out NYC Reddit Meetups when you arrive! :)

Looking good! A few things come to mind:

  • I'm pretty sure you will have to keep moving your Maschine and mouse to get your arms in to use your keyboard. I know it's expensive, but getting a separate (wireless!) mouse/keyboard combo has worked very well for me, as it puts everything in front w/o reaching.

  • Adhesive 3M wire hooks work great for hanging headphones and spare wires and I'm pretty sure they'll stick nicely to that wall, just don't pull them off too fast at the end of the year or they might bring some paint with them.

  • The back wall might or might not be giving you some phasey issues with reflections. I'm no expert but figured I should mention it. You may or may not care depending on how surgical you're trying to be with your mixing.

Hope you're having fun with it!

I pm'd you, and you said to go ahead and post, so here I go! (If it's too late, I understand, no worries!)

1: This delightful elephant teapot! It relates because you need a drink to toast with, and I need it for school because I'm pretty sure it's illegal to go to boarding school in England without a teapot.

2: Command Hook Refill Strips It relates because brooms are for cleaning, and organizing is related to cleaning. I need it for school because I love hanging things up in my dorm room, and I wouldn't dream of damaging the walls of Hogwarts!

3: This figure of Irvine from Final Fantasy 8 It relates because he wears a hat, and he used it in the game to flirt with one of the other characters. They're both my favorite characters from the game, and I love their understated romance. I need it for school because I like displaying my nerdy side with action figures in my dorm room.

4: TokyoMilk Dark #28: Excess Because I want an EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF BOOKS. And I need for school because, I mean, there will be dudes and probably some ladies at Hogwarts who are in to ladies and I intend to capitalize on that at some point.

5: Cards Against Humanity: The Bigger, Blacker, Box It relates because the box is basically the size of a trunk, and you can put LOTS of cards/stuff in it. I need it for school because no friendship is complete until you see how terrible a person you each are, and I plan on making lots of friends.

6: An Appa Plush! It relates because capes allow superheroes to fly, and Appa flies, and Team Avatar are essentially superheroes so you could say that Appa is their collective, living cape. That they lose at one point. I need it for school because I need something to cuddle at night to help me not feel homesick.

Mischief Managed!

Craigslist freezer - we chose upright for vertical space. Chest freezer might work - but you would have to figure out how to hang in it.

Temperature controller - there are lots of options. This one is the Johnson 419. You plug it into the wall then plug the freezer into the female lead. It cycles the freezer on and off at the set temperature. There are cheaper options - but I had this one laying around. I'll link some suggestions below.

The fan is a computer fan with speed switch. I wired it to an old 12v wall wort I had laying around in the parts bin.

Meat hooks are just stainless hooks - again from amazon.

get a thin piece of wood and mount the converter to that, then use strong double sided adhesive to mount the piece of wood to the back of the monitor. That is what I did and it works really well.

I recommend something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Command-Refill-Strips-Packaging-GP021-36NA/dp/B0751S46TS/ref=sr_1_9

You can get it in different sizes. They are super strong, but you can easily remove them if you ever need to move the mount or decide to redo your mod in any way. They are also super useful for a lot of different things around the house.

While scrolling through Amazon.com I found this awesome gadget. Would be great if you are watching a film on it or you are following a recipe when cooking but don't want to leave your phone on the counter. Or even if someone is calling while you are cooking/otherwise occupied! Just clip it anywhere, answer the call and carry on doing those odd jobs!

The other item you may find comes in handy is this or this

The first key holder is fab for storing mail as well as your keys and the second is one with a saying to remember on your way out of the door everyday! Trust me, when you move house, you will probably forever be looking for where you last had your keys!

u/apollymipanthos · 1 pointr/AsianBeauty

I use something like these and hang them in the shower to dry. You can get them at a local hardware store, Target, Walmart, etc. for pretty cheap. You just want them to dry all the way in between uses and this is the best way that I have found.

Honestly, the shapes and types don't matter that much because they all have worked the same for me. It's up to you which one you get. I pick up whichever is cheapest when I checkout as a small thing to throw in my cart.

I've use mine for 2-3 months. You'll see that the shape starts to deteriorate and it's not as smooth all the way around. That's when you'll want to throw it out. If you don't give your sponge a chance to dry all the way, you'll probably want to get rid of it sooner.

My apartment has pretty terrible lighting and with fall/winter coming on strong in the Boston area, I decided to put together a little home gardening station to help with lighting and movement of the plants for watering. I went into this with the goal of having my setup accommodate most of my small collection of plants and to allow for easy movement without having to mess with the grow lights. In the end, I decided on a cart-based design composed of the following items:

Bror Utility Cart 33 ½” X 21 ⅝” X 34 ⅝” ($99)

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/bror-utility-cart-black-pine-plywood-60333850/

Bror Add-on Shelf 21 ⅝” X 6 ¼” X 5 ½” ($10)

Koppla 3 Outlet Power Strip 19 ¾” ($4.99 for two pack)

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/koppla-3-outlet-power-strip-grounded-white-00086428/

2x Hemma Cord Set, Black 15’ 5” ($7.00 each)

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemma-cord-set-white-10175810/

(IKEA site only has white showing up now, black was available in-store)

2x Luftmassa Lamp Shade 10” ($17.99 each)

Kasa Smart WiFi Plug Mini HS105 ($21.75)

Relassy 20 Watt Dual Head, Gooseneck, Full Spectrum Grow Lamp ($27.39)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C68N7PC/

2x GE 9 Watt BR30 Balanced Full Spectrum Bulbs ($9.98 each)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NN6SVG6/

4x 3M Command Utility Hooks 3 lbs ($8.99 for nine)

2x Velcro Thin Ties 8” X ½” ($9.70 for 100)

Total Cost (pre-tax): $234.76

It just occurred to me; somebody needs to sell a double sided suction cup so selfie chicks can temporarily stick their phones to their mirrors and control the shutter by voice command.

EDIT: Well, somebody beat me too it but that's cool. They're so cheap - $7 for a pack of 10.

We need to let the hot selfie chicks of the world know about these to free up their hands for more interesting things.

This is pretty helpful, can put it on any door! Also under the bed storage is always great. Somewhere to put your mail and keys

u/ginger_genie · 5 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

I have these for our brick fireplace and hold great!

Holiday Joy - 4 Metal Brick Clip Fastener Hooks - Holds Up to 25 Pounds - Fits Brick 2-1/8 inch to 2-1/2 inch in Height - Made in USA (4 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F0QTHD4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OWEpDb0C8TJ92

u/mimosapudica · 7 pointsr/SubredditDrama

here's a site that sells something similar to what I have...http://www.nobutts.com.au/Personal-Smokers.html But for some reason this place only sells them in giant multipacks. Mine were given to me at a music festival so they probably were made by a company like this. I'm sure you can find ones sold individually online somewhere else!

when searching for the pervious link, I found round key chain versions that seem pretty cool too! http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Personal-Pocket-Ashtray-Keychain/dp/B0039OC3WC

u/SayJonTwice · 9 pointsr/FrankOcean

Two command strip hooks each, in the middle on the top and bottom. They're cheap and easy to put up and take down.

they're difficult to fit a lot of 2 disks vinyls (camp's vinyl is a pain to take off the wall), and if you're super serious about not damaging the art work (some vinyls I've hung up has little scratch on them from sliding the hooks against them), go for a better option, but they're great with most.

Amazon link to buy the command hooks I used

u/zxzxzx207 · 1 pointr/lifehacks

Great idea! When I was still smoking I used to use a ashtray on a keychain like this http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Personal-Pocket-Ashtray-Keychain/dp/B0039OC3WC pretty useful for a trip.

u/rasfert · 8 pointsr/techsupport

This is the best solution. Buy a bunch of Command Hooks and do a neat job, and your landlady probably won't mind.

u/PercheMiPiaci · 1 pointr/travel

Is the issue that they don't stay plugged in?

If yes, there probably isn't a good solution, however what you could try is:

  • bring an alcohol wipe and clean off the area on the outlet and your charger
  • use the 3m command strips refill pack to create a temporary bond

    Command Replacement Strips (17022-ES) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FDLFBK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GMPJDbF43E89W

Another option would be to get a short extension cord so that you could safely bend the prongs in or out to create tension on the socket and help it stay in

Edit: clarification on the approach to a falling out problem

Not OP but these are the best type I've found!

u/patpend · 1 pointr/Kayaking

Something more like this or this?

It seems like I would want something with a little longer front, to prevent the boats from slipping off.

u/mjhc · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I want an early present!

I'm moving to a new apartment and these would be great!

u/freecain · 1 pointr/DIY

Could you find a small easy release suction cup? - something like this?

u/ErikaTheZebra · 12 pointsr/BadDragon

Every attempt I have heard has never worked. Don't do it. Not worth ruining a good toy over.

However, you can get some double ended suction cups, like These. (These are probably too small, just providing an example) to hang them up with. Other people have had success with these.

u/rakiya · 1 pointr/Hue

Yes they do. I'm surprised that they aren't available in Sweden; they're a 3M product. Here they are available in almost any DIY shop and some stationers. Do you have Amazon in Sweden?

Actually no, using these to hang your Pebble in your shower is the best thing ever.

I use hooks like these to hold all of my shower gear, including my Pebble.

the flat 3m hooks here are how I mounted all my lightstrips. Works perfect, fits snug but you can easily remove.

u/graison · 4 pointsr/Hue

Or these command strip flat cord
The strip threads through perfectly.

u/meeshkyle · 2 pointsr/smoking

I do live my pit barrel cooker. I would say you may run intoa problem with some meats and needing the hooks to be straight.

Stainless Meat Hooks, Smoker Hook, 5", 4 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0195CE08Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fO0TCb33QT766

I got some of those hooks too. They help when hanging bigger pieces of meat and trying to figure out how to hook and hang them. Trust me.

u/odisen · 4 pointsr/amiibo

o.O it bothers me, please change them all to the clear ones lol.

This is my current setup:

http://imgur.com/yUOsFyt

I've had this setup for 3 weeks now with daily 3 hour play time, and they seem to be holding up just fine. Each hook can hold 7.5 lbs, so I don't worry about it being too heavy. Here is the list of the things I used:

u/renyhp · 3 pointsr/BottleCapCollecting

These are the ones I used. It's also a very cheap way for not having the collection in a drawer :)

u/fakemoose · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

For what it's worth, I use these plastic sticky hooks to hold my glasses and sunglasses. I stick them to the wall, usually by the door and in a vertical line, for sunglass and in my bedroom for regular glasses. It displays them and keeps them out of the way.

You could probably get the several pound 3M stickies as well for the brushes and tubes containers and then you can stack the pallets under that.

u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo · 19 pointsr/CozyPlaces

These are the lights I used

The wire is really thin, so I was able to use these command strips with a clear backing every few feet.

u/redfoxiii · 1 pointr/bikewrench

If the storage is inside, you can't get cheaper or better than these.

Remember to alternate bars up and down if it's single hook storage, and never hang oil damper suspension forks upside down.

u/3migo · 3 pointsr/ebikes

That's the way I'd be hanging it most likely. Hanging it vertically off the front wheel, and the rest of the bike hanging down from that point. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-7644-Heavy-Ceiling-2-Piece/dp/B000NY4U9U?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_5

u/Sickis · 1 pointr/funny

I prefer using these hooks. It lets me keep my workspace clear.

u/cenebi · 9 pointsr/worldnews

There are in fact thousands, possibly millions of people worldwide that have portable ashtrays.

This one is less than $5, $10 with shipping. This isn't that difficult.

This one is also under $5 and has a colorful kangaroo on it.

So yes, people actually do that. It's this thing people that aren't lazy and terrible call "Having some goddamn respect".

u/chubbysumo · 5 pointsr/HomeNetworking

>I'm currently renting my house and I can't make any modifications at all...

run the wires behind the baseboard trim, or use these little clear
3M command hooks
to just string the cable's up along near the ceiling.

u/Aspirant_Fool · 1 pointr/techsupport

Move your monitor to whatever position will require the most available cable. Gather a little bit of slack at a fixed point on the mount, and zip-tie it in place. Now, when you move your monitor around, you'll know you always enough slack in the cable to avoid tugging on it.

You could also add something on the monitor side, e.g. a right-angle connector in the port, and/or something like this with a rubber band around the hook and the cable to help it stay in position and avoid movement perpendicular to the plane of the port.

u/Grit45 · 2 pointsr/headphones

I just bought large hooks with a screw shape on the end and screwed it in to my table. Works great.

I bought mine from home Depot, but it looks similar to these: TEKTON 7644 Heavy Duty Bike Hooks, Ceiling Mount, 2-Piece https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NY4U9U/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_JkLxwbRXMZYKY

Another

A third hung from the ceiling

u/psdtwk · 1 pointr/unicycling

$5.75 on Amazon. and every hardware store has them for the same price range.

u/lostthinkiam · 1 pointr/cycling

the stress is actually on the spoke nut, not the spoke. As long as you bike isn't 60lbs, I'm sure it'll be completely fine in the long run. have also used two utility hooks, like these (http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-7644-Heavy-Ceiling-2-Piece/dp/B000NY4U9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369097932&sr=8-1&keywords=utility+hook+screw)
but mounted sideways into the wall, then hung both wheels on them with the bike upside down. That way the weight is 50/50 on the wheel rims - which are made to handle 250lbs+ so the bike by itself is nothing. Have done that for decades.

If you're really paranoid, you can always install it slightly low so that the rear wheel sits on the ground and the hook retains play. then you know the weight load is more horizontal and is only that few lbs it takes to oppose gravity from the bike falling backwards.
