There are going to be a lot of recommendations from people to hire exterminators, but I would recommend getting the equipment and doing it yourself.

One of the issues is that most exterminators come around once a month, but the life cycle of most roaches is half that, so even if you catch one wave of them, the eggs they are carrying are unaffected and will hatch, grow up, and reproduce within a couple of weeks.

There are basically three things you need to get:

Get some Fipronil Gel: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004GESOI6 Super cheap online, and 10 times more powerful than what you can get at the local store. This is what the pros use. Put this in places like under cabinets in the kitchen, near water sources, etc. Roaches like to rest in warm places. Anyplace in the apartment that is warm is a likely base for the roaches. This might be lighting fixtures, around the hot water pipes. Worst of all they might be inside your electronics such as your television or computers. They also like tight spaces, spaces they can just barely get into. Loose papers, inside the spines of hardcover books, the spaces between a shelf and the wall, places like that. Look for the roach shit, that's always a sure way to recognize where they have been hanging out.

The Fipronil on it's own is a cheap solution, but it's not the best. To really go to war you have to invest in a good sprayer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009KM25W You can go for a cheaper one, but I would suggest it's worth the investment. If you solve the problem in the long run, you can easily resell it and recoup most of the cost, though I recommend holding on to it. Remember to let the pressure out when you are done with it, you don't want to ruin the rubber seals on it.

I would also recommend a powerful plugin handheld vacuum such as this: https://www.amazon.com/Eureka-EasyClean-Lightweight-Handheld-71B/dp/B0006HUYGM/ It's powerful enough that it eviscerates the roaches as they get sucked up. A battery operated vacuum is weak enough that they don't die and they just crawl back out.

Lastly, you have to develop the discipline to starve them. They wouldn't be growing in number if they didn't have something to eat. You have to clean *every day*. Everytime you use a dish, immediately wash it after you are done with it. Open up a can of spaghettios? Wash the can out before you throw it away. Only have one trash can in the apartment and put Fipronil in it and keep an eye on it. Don't wait for the bag to be full before you empty it out. Don't leave loose papers around, throw away junk mail immediately. Got a leaky faucet? Get it fixed. Turn off your electronics and unplug them if you aren't using them. Don't leave lights on longer than you need to.

This is *your* war, you have to win it on your own. If you wait around for the apartment manager, or an exterminator to win it for you, you'll be waiting a long time. Why pay someone else to do it when you can use the same exact products they use, and do it yourself.

You'll need to use a gel bait. Best applied in commonly found harborage areas like around warm, moist areas, (the mechanical workings of refrigerator, behind stoves, in cabinets, under sinks, any other areas you commonly see them) place the bait in pea sized drops, and use more then you think you'll need. These products are great for areas you can't reach or see like inside walls. You'd remove outlet covers, lights switch covers etc. Place tip of duster inside the wall, and "blow" the dust inside the wall.

A few things to look for after applying, firstly, dead cockroaches show they're getting in the product. Also, the growth regulator will mutate the females appearance, curling the wings on their backs. Seeing these will also give you a clue you're applying the product in the correct place. All of these products are expensive, but when applied correctly will be very effective at solving your problem. Good luck to you

They get mobile in the summer and will travel into your home. This is the most important time to keep a handle on them, you'll see giant watering style roaches and teeny German cockroaches in Houston.

Germans are the bigger concern, they're the sort that likes to infest homes and when an infestation gets going it can be tough, if you're infested you'll see tens or hundreds scatter when you turn on the kitchen lights at night.

If you just see one or two on wet objects occasionally they're probably traveling. Best to use some sort of bait poison in my opinion. I swear by advion cockroach bait which I buy in syringes from Amazon.

It's peanut butter looking gel you lay out near cracks and crevices, along baseboards, backs of cabinets, between the stove and the wall, behind the fridge, countertops on slips of thin cardboard. They'll eat and carry it in and on their bodies back to their nests, where they die. Then their cannibal brethren will eat them, and die. Makes for a very effective treatment, I've used it to help friends fix up terrible German roach infestations in a week or two.

The waterbug varieties die to it too, but they're not so much indoor dwelling roaches so they rarely infest clean appearing homes.

Mostly harmless to animals, active ingredient is indoxacarb which is used in some flea drops.

It used to be about $25 with prime shipping from Amazon but it seems that's not the case at the moment. This was the best I could find.

Note on animal toxicity, these chemicals are safe because they're being spread at low concentrations in small areas, not broadly and widely like with sprays. If your animals seek and consume the roach bait that will not only increase the dose but reduce the effectiveness of your bait. I've never had issues with my cats being interested, but maybe a dog would. Just keep the bait out of reach of them as best you can,

I try to avoid using chemicals around my house as much as possible. I do it because I garden and I have a dog that I don't want to expose to any chemicals.

I moved back into my house about 2 years ago after renting it out for a couple of years. There was an ant problem when I returned. I tried the non-chemical approach: cleaning, sealing up entries, sealing up anything that may have a little sugar in it, boric acid. I never really had much luck. Eventually winter came and the ant left. The ants came back with a vengeance this year. I had a freakin' ant super highway running along my baseboards. I tried deal with it but I had no luck.

Eventually, I resorted to chemicals to deal with it. I bought this. All of the ants were gone within 2 days.

I know you have roaches but this bait is supposed to work on all crawling insects including ants, roaches, and silverfish. Good luck, let me know if you have any luck with any non-chemical approaches.

I live in an 8 unit prewar & had some stubborn roaches despite a monthly exterminator visit. You can do everything right, but shared walls and floors are like a highway between you and your slob neighbor(s).

We put Hot Shot 95789 Mini Ultra Liquid Roach Bait in the common areas of the building (basement was a breeding ground). and gave two to each unit. It made a huge difference, as far as I know no one has a roach problem 6 months later.

It needs to be a building wide solution. You can do that by talking to your super and/or talking to your neighbors. Do both, & warn your super that if he doesn't fix the roaches you are gonna distribute 30$ worth of bait stations to your immediate neighbors & subtract from rent.

I live in a 100+ year old home, outside of town, surrounded by 300+ acres of wheat field. We deal with mice off and on frequently.

The other suggestions below are all good. Make sure you don't leave food out. Look for possible entrance holes on the exterior and seal them up.

These style mouse traps are the best. Fill the little bait reservoir with a dab of peanut butter. Easy to set, nearly impossible to get the bait without tripping the mechanism. The only thing better is a cat.

Bait stations in a few strategic locations will help immensely as well. The only thing that sucks, is occasionally a mouse will end up dying somewhere inside the house and you can't find it, and you'd be amazed at the stink that comes out of that tiny rotting carcass. A few of these outside the house around the foundation are also a good idea.

The best strategy I've found for mass extermination is to bait the traps with peanut butter but do not set them. Leave them for several days, check them every day and see if they're being eaten, re-bait as necessary. The mice become accustomed to a free meal at the trap every day. After about a week, bait and set the traps, and it's like the holocaust. Continue baiting and setting until at least a few days go by with no catches.

That sucks. Maybe look into seeing how much it would cost to get just a piece fumigated? Those fuckers hide EVERYWHERE. You need to put ALL your clothes, bedding shoes etc into a Dryer on highest heat for like 90 minutes.

Then you need to bag EVERYTHING. Keep your clothes in bags-tie em in knots you do and undo.

When you vacuum, vacuum EVERYTHING. windowsills, walls extra in the corners. Dust the top of sills and ceiling fans and light fixtures.

Some ant such as carpenter ants have seasons when they are looking for sweet, and seasons where they are looking for protein.

Where the little terro bait stations don't work, I've found that a combination of the Advion suggested by others and granular protien bait such as Advance 375a will within a few days eliminate the problem. Fortunately my ant colonies have always liked to navigate by following door trim up and over doorways, so it has been easy for me to put both gel and granular baits up on the lintel door trim or tops of cabinets that are inaccessible to pets. Other placements include pulling out bookshelves to place it at the baseboard protected by the bookshelf plinth from interference by pets, and behind fridge and stove which are spots my pets cannot get to.

It is likely your bait is too powerful. The little bastards die too soon to spread it around to nest mates and their brood adequately. Sometimes you DO get luck and pick off enough of them they they quit foraging in that area but it is possible they will return in time. If the nest is right IN you house, this makes the process longer.

Terro is likely too powerful (unless that have a formula specifically for "small ants.)

HEREis a nice product though, in that link is a bit pricey. This takes patience.

I can't do much about your ant problem (although this helped with ants in my kitchen), one of the things that gave me confidence to try my first kettle sour was the recent Milk the Funk podcast on kettle souring. They discussed oxygen exposure during souring and said it isn't an issue. Their recommendation is that no steps need to be taken to seal up the wort during the souring phase other than covering it someway to keep critters out of it. Brulosophy also had a recent podcast on kettle souring and they came to the same conclusion. Definitely worth a listen if you're interested in the topic.

I had a lovely roommate bring fleas in once, you just need to clean everything in a blitz and get some spray. Just throw dirt all over, it's kinda like little insect barbed wire.

I don't think it's possible to be absolutely sure. But you can look for signs. You could justify this by saying a friend of yours had an issue with bugs and you've heard it's a problem in the area. If I were the landlord, I'd be glad to rent to a tenant who shows diligence in preventing infestations. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to ignore the bug problem.

As for treatment/prevention, as I said it's impossible to be sure, so you should be very cautions when moving just in case. All it takes is one bug. If you've had a bed bug problem in the past, you may already know how seriously you should take this. Don't fuck around.

When looking at the apartment, examine cabinets below sinks--are there little black specks? They could be pest poop or other detritus indicative of a roach infestation. Use Google images to identify signs. Bed bugs are harder to identify if the furniture is gone, but look in the bedroom (or wherever previous tenants slept) around carpet edges and in crevices. This is hard and not your fault if you missed it.

Ask if the landlord's pest control service can give the unit an extra once-over before you move in. Examine and clean all of your furniture. Get a strong, foaming pest spray.

In order to prevent bringing them with you, put all possible items in the dryer on high heat for a full cycle. If they are machine washable, wash them first. If not, just do the dryer. For un-tumblable items, put them in plastic tubs and spray them/the lid of the tub with poison and let it sit for at least a day so the fumes can circulate. This is for like books, knick knacks jewelry, etc.

Keep ALL TREATED ITEMS separate from untreated. Moving is good, you can keep treated stuff at the new place.

This may seem like overkill but it is actually the bare minimum you should do for bed bugs. I'm sure I'm forgetting something because it's late. I got carried away because bed bugs traumatized me twice and I want to prevent that from ever happening to anyone else.

It was the only thing that cleared my roach infested shithole apartment, and now I seen zero roaches in a year.

While you're still looking for a place, just say that a friend of yours had a lot of trouble with bugs. But be very thorough in checking for bugs, and if you see them, look for a new place or insist the landlord pay for a full treatment. There may be a clause in the lease saying that bed bug infestations are the responsibility of the tenant--once you move in it's your problem.

this is the most effective legal way of controlling a roach infestation, from severe to minor. Please do not use repellant based sprays like black flag, ortho home defense etc. Infact, if it uses bifenthrin, deltamethrin, or cyfluthrin, you are wasting your time when it comes to controlling roaches.

Do not boric acid either, messy and useless. Do not "bug bomb" or fogger. If that stuff worked, pest control would not be an industry. Fipronil based bait is the way to go, and there are a number of good tutorials for effective bait application techniques and guidelines on YouTube.

As for pest control services in area, IMO Terminix charges waaaay too much now, and are pretty much the Comcast of pest control. Orkin is the Time Warner. OPC barely trains their techs, and certainly doesn't pay them well, so you can expect that in your service. Smaller outfits can deliver service on par with what you pay, but there is no way to generalize them.

Although it's not the fast way, baiting and growth regulators are key to defeating the roach menace. This method takes roughly two weeks, depending on the size of the infestation.

A few regiments of these, these, and this got my old apartment roach-free. Maybe someone else can recommend better products but these worked great for me.

We too use products like these. The trick is to apply the product where you are seeing the roaches. Nooks and crannies, dark places where they hide. I usually use some form of Maxforce. A little bit goes a long way, its safe enough for pets since they shouldnt get to it anyways and the active indgredient is only .05% of the product. You'll see more roaches than ever at first, but pretty soon you'll only see dead ones. Good Luck!

If this is the only one you've seen, then it definitely isn't an infestation. If you want to be sure though, I recommend getting some of these and stashing them in cabinets, behind furniture against the wall, under sinks, etc. Dark, untouched corners, basically. That pack of 8 is enough to roach-proof my 1700 square foot home, so I imagine that pack should work fine for wherever you're living unless you have some crazy huge house.

It's only a few bucks and can take care of strays like this guy and minor infestations. I own a home in East Texas and roaches are just part of life when the weather starts changing here. Starts to get cold or hot, roaches (and all sorts of other creepy crawlies) are going to look for shelter, typically in man-made structures. I put those traps out when I so much as see a single one in my house, and in the 3 years I've owned this place, I've had to do it around this time of year every year.

The roaches themselves don't bother me so much (I used to raise Dubia Roaches by the thousand to feed to my lizards and to sell, so the gross factor went out the window long ago for me), I just don't want them getting into my food or making a home out of my home.

Terro Ant Baits, Work like a dream!

Someone else asked if they were pet safe and I can almost guarantee they are not.

Advion is the only thing that’s gotten rid of roaches for me long-term, and it is amazing. I got an order of bait arenas after a particularly gnarly infestation, and it cleared up the roaches quickly and permanently. I highly recommend this stuff.

Update: when I first saw your comment, I ordered terro as per the suggestion. The first 2-3 days the ants swarmed toward it (I found one of their entrances by a floor heat vent where hot air comes out), then eventually they stopped coming. I thought they all died but after about a week another swarm came and now at present it's looking like they're appearing less. It's been a month since I initially posted/bought this I'm hoping they're getting closer to completely dying.

The box says to replace very 3 months though. I don't think the boxes attract other colonies as well as the smell (pheromones) that comes from the ants when they find food does so shouldn't the boxes be left incase more ants come?

My garden is slug central. I highly recommend Sluggo or Sluggo Plus (it also does cutworms!). They're safe to use, including if you have pets, and last awhile even if it's been raining. Without them I wouldn't get seedlings of any kind. My beer traps were overflowing with slugs before I discovered Sluggo.

My kids spill dog food all over the garage which attracts mice. I clean up the dog food and beg, beg,"Please don't spill dog food. PLEASE". And they continue to just throw it all over the garage.

The items are pricey compared to going to the story and getting the cheap bait, but this stuff has worked wonders for me.

For ants inside the house, I use Tarro Ant Baits. This stuff is awesome and works great.

As for the outside, you can have someone come and spray your yard. I've never used it, but my neighbor has used Mosquito Authority. Maybe try Gannons??? I have no clue what it costs though.

I don't know the terms of your lease (you said apartment, so I'm assuming you're renting), but it might be worth at least contacting your landlord to see if they'll do something about patching up the cracks.

And for a friendly tip, if you have an ant problem, just store your snacks in plastic containers with lids that seal. Yeah, I've been there before.

Granular bait is a good suggestion, but Advion Insect Granules specifically are not labeled for Red Imported Fire Ants.

Also, if you really wanna get rid of the problem, diatomaceous earth is completely safe for pets and humans (I actually ate some before putting it in my 1 year old's room) and works amazingly. It's not an instantaneous kill, but they carry it back to the colony to prevent future infestations.

Please don't stress yourself out. Could your delicate clothing be heat treated? It only takes a few runs in the drier to make sure. Visual inspection of the clothing will help as well.

Also, german roaches are horrible. I understand your paranoia. But it's easier to kill a roach infestation than a bed bug infestation. I'd rather have roaches. lol I can kill roaches easy with a little proactive killing and poison.

I went to a bug & weed mart, they recommended some gel baits since I had ants coming in the house getting into the animal food. You don't need to hire an exterminator for an ant problem. You can easily handle it yourself using this.

Baiting the kitchen is fine because that's likely where the majority of the infestation is but they should definitely be using a residual throughout the rest of the house.
If you want to take matters into your own hands, there are a few things you can do. First, get some of this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IEG1FBU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V49PDbDYH1VD9. Remove everything from all your cabinets, pull the refrigerator away from the wall and clean under and behind it, pull the stove away from the wall and clean under and behind it, and use the 565 in all reachable cracks and crevices. It doesn't take much, 1 or 2 second bursts is fine. I'm talking between the cabinets and the walls, between each cabinet, around the dishwasher, and anywhere else roaches may be hiding. If the refrigerator has cardboard covering the motor, remove the cardboard. Spray 565 around the motor. 565 is a flushing agent, it will kill the roaches but not immediately. The key is to vacuum up any roaches that come running out of the cracks and crevices and any egg sacs or dead roaches you see. Be prepared, if the infestation is bad there will be a lot of roaches. Keep flushing and vacuuming until you don't see any more roaches.

I found this stuff to be very effective. I just dabbed it as instructed all around the edge of every room, in cabinets, around doors/windows. Then you'll occasionally start finding dead roaches (or nearly dead) here and there.

I also did a professional bug treatment every 6 months as others have suggested.

Get some of these. They're seriously magical. No other brand works as well in my experience. They'll be gone in less than 48 hours.

For instant death of roaches, better than bugspray: WD40. the oil covers the roach and ends up suffocating it, faster and with less toxins.

You've got tiny ones, which means that they're nesting in the walls. That whole building is screwed. So either push hard for your room as others mentioned, or leave. There's no middle ground here. You'd do the community a service too if you told us all where it is. If it's this bad, they're not going to change without drastic interference.

If you’re worried about pets, look into this stuff. We use it for roaches/ants and works great. You just kinda sprinkle it wherever you see roaches. They’ll walk in it and it basically kills them by dehydrating them.

No joke, this stuff works miracles. It's the only type of bait that actually kills the queen, which is the only way to permanently get rid of the ants.

Suspend SC along the foundation, windows, and doors where ants may enter.

Hopefully homeowner will take care of it but the method above will create a barrier preventing ants from getting in and if any are inside the terro should kill them including the nest).

Do yourself a favor, and pickup some diatomaceous earth and a powder duster to rid yourself of the those little demons. The BIL had them and had bug bombed and had 2 different exterminators try to kill them... But was still infested. We grabbed these, dusted ALL over anywhere they were or could hide.... Been rid of them over a year now since that single dusting we did.

Below are the ones that we picked up. But your local Walmart/Lowes/Home Depot should also have similar items.

I find that Terro liquid works great on those little sugar ants. Put the bait out and watch them swarm to it within 30 minutes (it's kind of creepy how fast they find it). You'll see a huge number of ants at first, but don't be tempted to kill them. Let them take the bait back to the nest, and eventually they will disappear.

Or just get some Terro ant baits and place them around where they hang out. They will SWARM the baits but don't kill them yet, they have to bring poison back to the hive where it'll kill their mama and babies.

TERRO Liquid Ant Bait stations are the way to go by far. Using the bait stations is way less messy than using the liquid that you squeeze out a drop.

DO NOT spray the ants with anything. If you spray, you risk blocking the ants from going back to their colony, which could cause them to form a NEW colony inside your house (if there is enough ants already in there). Then you have double trouble. The same goes for diatomaceous earth or other "barriers" which can divide the ants inside your house, from the colony outside.

Just use the TERRO ant bait, which is nothing but sugar water and borax. The ants take this back to the colony and share it with others, which kills off the entire colony at its source. You'll notice ants going in to the bait station within a few hours, then you'll notice a lot of ant activity, then you'll notice dead ants everywhere, then you'll see no more dead ants - the remaining live ones bring the dead ants back to the colony to eat.

These work GREAT and are the first line of defense. If using one of these bait stations doesn't help within ~72 hours, call an exterminator.

Buy some of this. Trust me, it works.

I work in roofing and all the guys are nasty as shit. They leave food behind in trucks and where we park the trucks is in a non-paved area. So overtime some trucks get them. I actually got them from leaving my car there a week, while working out of town, so when I put my suitcase back in my car to go home I'd bring them with me. I saw my pest control guy use this or something like it, so I bought it and tried it myself later on when I brought them home again.

I even used this on one of the nastiest trucks we have. German roaches are EVERYWHERE. I opened the truck door (not my work truck) and roaches were falling out, running around and just fucking nasty is the only way to put it. I put some of that stuff all around the truck and toolbox. About two days later I asked one of my Mexican coworkers if it still had roaches and he said it's a fucking graveyard in there. He asked wtf I did, so I told him. They tried everything to kill them, but me putting this stuff in there finally killed them all.


Trust me, buy it. It will take a few days to kill them all, but usually after a day or two you can see them start to die. Put that shit everywhere you see them, and really in the infested areas.
