Europe is a big place. If you only spend two weeks in each country, you won't see everything in the EU much less Europe.

My wife and I have visited 21 (or 22, I can't remember right now) countries in Europe over the last nine years and here's my advice.

  • Camping is great in the Nordic countries and surrounding areas. We've camped in Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, and Scotland. They're all ok. Facilities vary from campsite to campsite. When camping in Sweden and Norway we often just found a quiet spot somewhere as the law allows camping on private land as long as your campsite is located a reasonable distance from inhabited dwellings (100 meters or more).

  • Camping advice, tent: If possible, get an REI tent from REI. They're rock-solid.

  • Camping advice, general: bring a big towel. Your tent is going to get wet, so you have the towel. You are going to get wet, so you have the towel. Your ass is going to hurt from sitting on a bench or some hard seat or something, so you have the towel. If you want to sleep somewhere and need a makeshift pillow, you've got the towel. It's cheap, so if gets lost, ruined, or something else happens, then it doesn't matter - you get a new one.

  • Travel advice, shoes and socks: spend a lot of money on really good shoes. I happen to like Salomon's Discovery GTX but whatever floats your boat. Just remember, you're going to be living on your feet for a year. The other piece of advice: try not to get your shoes wet enough that they get your feet/socks wet. If your feet get wet, get 'em dry again as quick as possible. Dry socks are important. Bring plenty of pairs of socks. I'd suggest a pair of good hiking/outdoor sandals as your backup footwear - you can use 'em in the shower if it's a bit gross, you can use them if your main footwear is still too wet to wear, and you can use them if you're regular footwear is too hot to wear.

  • Travel advice, head gear: I'd suggest a wide-brimmed hat, like a boonie/jungle hat. It'll keep the rain off've you, it'll keep the sun out of your eyes, and you can fold it up and stuff it in your bag when you don't need it and not feel bad about it because it's about $10. As a bonus, there isn't an extra logo on your gear.

  • If you want even the tiniest hope of seeing Europe and not just three to five countries in Europe, you are going to need to be more or less constantly on the move. There are a lot of countries here! So consider limiting your scope; being always on the move is very tiring. However, don't limit your scope too much. If you visit just Italy, Germany, France, and the UK you will have seen such a narrow bit of Europe that your impressions will be all wrong. Include a handful of Central European countries in your travels, along with the Nordic countries. I'd suggest one country per 3-4 weeks if you're backpacking.

  • Plan, plan, plan. If you want things to go smoothly, you should start planning roughly three months ago if you wanted to take off in, say, February 2015. The logistics of a year-long, multi-country visit are non-trivial. Plan where you are going to stay, what you'd like to see, and figure out how long it will take to get to various places. If you're saying in hostels, start making reservations. If you aren't able to plan too far in advance, do this while you're on the road but make time for planning. Good planning will help ensure that your adventures are of the "I saw tons of awesome stuff and talked to great people" rather than "there was this one time where I had to sleep on a bench when it was -5C out and snowing".

  • Travel smart #1. Your iPhone or iPad - but ideally an iPhone - can be your best friend during this trip, assuming that you use it wisely. Every country and most big cities have a public transportation app or three that the locals use. Sometimes they're in English but if not they're usually still understandable. I'd also suggest that you pick up iRail or its equivalent. I find that the prices in iRail are not always reliable because it depends on where you're purchasing the tickets and if you're crossing borders during the journey but the timetables are very reliable.

  • Travel smart #2: For your iPhone, purchase Navigon's Europe map set, it's around $80 USD. Knowing where you are and how far it is to where you are going along with how to get there will simplify things immensely. Being lost is crappy.

  • Travel smart #3: For your iPhone, get the In Your Pocket app and download the guides for any cities you want to visit. They are amazing resources.

  • Travel smart #4: Get offline translation dictionaries and phrasebooks for your iPhone. Lingvo is probably my favourite these days but there are lots.

  • Travel smart #5: Rather than purchasing a guidebook for every place you visit, consider something like Wikipanion. There are lots of offline Wikipedia readers but what you really need when traveling is to be able to quickly locate the Wikipedia article for the building/statue/place/town you're looking at. Wikipanion does that, as long as you've followed "Travel smart #6" tip below and got a pre-paid SIM card for your phone/tablet.

  • Travel smart #6: Your iPhone (or smart phone) should be unlocked. Pick up a pre-paid SIM in each country you visit - you can usually get a pre-paid card with 500MB to 2GB data on it for around 10 to 20 EUR, including the cost of the card, activation, and the data. In most countries this takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes, although in Italy and Spain the process takes closer to about 30 minutes as they want a copy of your passport and to fill-in a bunch of details. Other places are happy to sell you a pre-paid SIM card at petrol stations and little newspaper kiosks and don't ask you anything about you. However, I should note that it may be tricky to find pre-paid SIM cards in nano sizes. When I travel and I know I'll be picking up a SIM card, I bring my SIM card cutter with me and cut larger SIM sizes down to fit my phone/tablet.

  • Travel smart #7: If you're going to be relying on your phone/tablet to do a bunch of stuff for you, then ensure that you properly support it. Have a large capacity battery backup and a good case. Bring a couple of backup charging cables (Lightning, micro USB, whatever). Lastly, pick up some plug converters. I'd suggest a few of this. Note that if you visit Italy, they have slightly different plugs and your converter may not work in them! So check on amazon and pick up something that is cheap and SIMPLE. Complicated plug converters break.

  • Money: some countries love cash. The Central European/Slavic countries, in particular. They're often quite happy to take your card, as long as it is the European-style chip-and-PIN, but some places only take cash. So, have some cash handy. Make a point to hit up the first cash-changing place in a good-sized city you visit. Here in Poland there are places called "kantor" everywhere and they offer very good exchange rates. Better than your credit card will, at any rate. Conversely, I find that some countries - Netherlands in particular - are cash averse. Be prepared to pay with a chip-and-pin card ONLY. Not a credit card, not a debit card with a PIN, a chip-and-PIN card.

  • Eat local: if you're on a budget (and you undoubtedly are) go grocery shopping. Personally, I'd suggest learning to love sandwiches. Pick up some condiments in plastic squeezable containers - none of it will go bad at the rate you'll be using them - and get bread, meat, cheese, and some veggies at a little store once a day or so. If you've got a little pot and butane stove, this is also obviously the time to pick up some ramen.

  • Drink local: you will make friends with your fellow travellers and the locals amazingly fast with a bottle of alcohol; vodka is the simplest and will work in Central Europe for sure. Adjust for local tastes (wine in France, gin in the UK, etc). Just don't drink on the train or I will hate you.

Mischief Managed! =D (All of this is seriously making me so giddy!)

  1. I know alcohol is banned on RAOA campus, but Butterbeer isn't! Now I don't have to traipse all the way to Rogsmead Village to get my hands on this delicious stuff. I can simply enjoy it by the comfort of my common room fire while I diligently study for my classes. =)

  2. The riddle, without its "hair," is simply a stick. And what is a stick but a weapon for self defense, really? You know what else is great for self defense? Pepper spray. Pepper spray is great for self defense, especially when you're walking around the dark RAOA castle and grounds at night. I mean, the attackers will be expecting a defense spell, but they won't be expecting pepper spray to the eyeballs!

  3. Technically, not the answer, but some think that it is. I sorta think it is. I mean it sits on the same place, serves the same function. I especially love this one- I mean, look at the beautiful color! Perfect for keeping me warm on those chilly winter days at the RAOA castle (on off-uniform days of course ;D ).

  4. Well, according to my school supply list for RAOA School, I'm supposed to have these two items. Luckily for me, they come in a two-for-one price pack, which is great for us students! This is essentially the riddle, as well, so yes, boring, but it's required! ;D

  5. The riddle is, at its essence, a place to store and sometimes transport things. Currently, I am lacking a place to store and transport cupcakes. I'm getting more serious regarding my baking, and I hate it when my cute little cupcakes that I worked so hard on get ruined on the way to my birthday pal's common room. =( This special case would be amazing for storing, transporting, and delivering my nummy cupcakes around the RAOA castle!

  6. The riddle is related to superheroes, yes? Well one of my favorite superheroes is Chell from Portal. She's not a superhero, you say? Well, I beg to differ? I mean seriously, just look at all she went through and what she accomplished. She's a superhero to me, anyway. It would be amazing to wear her super awesome long fall socks underneath my uniform robes! Not only are they just plain awesome, but they'll keep my feet warm around the drafty RAOA castle. =)

And again, thank you sooooo much for this! I'm so excited about all this Potterness!

OK... So footwear, socks & undies... all the important stuff... complete...

So what's next?

Well some students choose to go full-blown Nanook and get a heavy winter parka... which is OK, I suppose... it'll definitely keep you warm... But for many students, it can also be an unnecessary budget buster... which is where the aforementioned "layering" comes in...

Instead of buying a heavy winter parka, many students already have a lighter weight windbreaker style jacket that's at least water repellent, if not actually water proof... And that, combined with the ubiquitous hoodie sweatshirt can provide warmth that approximates that of a parka... (and windbreakers often come with a thin nylon "hood" that can add a little rain resistance to the cotton "hoodie", which provides insulation, but no rain resistance)

Remember, you have the flexibility of wearing the windbreaker and hoodies either separately or at the same time... and for added warmth, you can still wear a long sleeve shirt and/or a sweater or another sweatshirt and/or a T-shirt and your thermal tops underneath... How many layers you wear is entirely up to you, depending how cold it is and how windy/rainy it is...

Added warmth for head, neck & hands... Well a knit, stocking cap is always popular since it helps keep the ears warm... And you can wear it anytime, either with or without the hoodie... And a scarf can provide added protection... not just for the neck, but for lower half of your face... NOTE: Big, bulky knit may LOOK warm, but the wind will blow right through it... You want something that is a tight knit that blocks the wind & will help keep your face from getting chapped... An inexpensive pair of ski goggles with tinted lens is not an absolute necessity, but they can come in handy... They cold wind can make you teary-eyed which can make it difficult to see... And the sun reflecting off the snow can also be blindingly bright... So don't shell out the big bucks unless you actually snowmobile or ski... but a cheap pair of goggles definitely helps...

Similarly, an inexpensive pair of ski gloves will keep your hands warm... Once again, you don't need an expensive "good" pair unless you're a frequent downhill skier... But traditional knit gloves or mittens don't stop the wind very well, are NOT moisture resistant and aren't very warm.... Just like your feet: Happy hands are warm & dry!

So that's it... It took quite a bit to write it all down, but when you take it all in, there really isn't THAT much in "specialty" clothing to bust your budget... Especially considering that you're just a freshman and will probably be experiencing at least 4 winters in State College...

If I was going to add just one more thing to this list, it would be for a reasonably priced ski jacket (Men's or Women's) It doesn't have to be very fancy or expensive...and a hood is optional... but wind & rain resistance is imperitive... And compared to only having a lightweight windbreaker/hoodie combination, it provides you with a little more wardrobe flexibility as to how you "layer."

Well FINALLY... I'm DONE... So all-in-all there isn't that much to get... It's just that some years the weather is relatively mild and other years with winter comes early & lasts for what seems a lifetime... and nobody knows for sure what to expect... So it's best to have flexibility in your wardrobe and maximize your year-round utility with layers.

Good luck, and stay warm and DRY.

Ok here is the lowdown on your questions...

Basic cold weather: a winter hat (I have been happy with a simple hat but you can get pretty much anything that fits your style), a good set of gloves (fuck those shitty knit woolen ones that get wet and cold, invest is a decent water resistant pair but you don't need to go crazy with arctic mittens. You should get a decent winter jacket, but the big thing is just having nice comfortable layers. I usually get by wearing a thick hoodie under a waterproof outer layer, a thin puffy jacket, or a decent pullover.

I would definitely get a good pair of waterproof/water resistant shoes/boots that go at least a little bit up your ankle. Winters in PVD have a lot of slush and spring/fall have a lot of puddles. Dry feet are happy feet.

It rarely gets freakishly cold (single digit cold) in Providence, the city tends to be warmer than surrounding areas because it is urban and near the coast.

Mexicans: There are Mexicans, but nowhere near like California. The big ethnic enclaves in Providence are Portugese, Cape Verdian, and to some extent Italian with Mexicans and other Hispanics rounding out the minority demographics.

Mexican food: Surprisingly, the area has some really good Mexican food but it is hard to find. MY wife lived in LA for a while and I lived just north of the big Mexican neighborhood in Chicago so we got used to good Mexican food. The best places are Chilangos, Taqueria Lupita, and Mijos Taco Truck.

Accents: "You guys" is a bit off because Providence is full of non-Rhode Islanders (colleges, being between NYC and Boston, etc.). There is definitely an RI accent that you will hear (and it can be thick and distinct) but neither myself (midwesterner) or my wife (northwesterner) have ever had a problem with it.

Weed: Sorry, I can't say. But there are big colleges in Providence so I can only imagine.

Fun, cheap stuff to do: Things I like... 1) The Providence Downcity Bocce League, cheap, casual, bocce, can drink beer downtown, good people 2) Skating in the winter, there is a big, outdoor skating rink open all winter 3) Farmers markets, I know I may be stretching the definition of "fun" but there are a lot of good farmers markets around 4) Music, between the Met, Lupos, AS220, and several other small venues there is a lot of good music for relatively cheap 5) The RISD art museum is incredibly cheap and surprisingly excellent 6) Going down to the beaches, cheap, beautiful atlantic seascapes

Safety: The city is safe almost everywhere. There are some pockets of bad neighborhood on the "south side." The "west side" is generally a little more dangerous than the "east side." Basically anywhere on the East Side is safe.

If you have any other questions just ask.

u/SickSalamander · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

Nevada is awesome. Sheldon is awesome.

You'll have a blast.

The majority of NV is relatively undocumented. You can hike up any of the thousands of peak in the state, but most are not even named. Even fewer have real trailheads or established trails. They are still amazing hikes with countless hidden wonders.

85% of the land in the state is /r/publiclands. You are allowed to camp basically anywhere on the BLM or FS land for up to 17 days at a time in the same spot.

Backpacking can be difficult due to lack of water, but there are still several great trails in the area. And you are an easy day's drive from most of the best the West has to offer. If you have multiple days off in a row, take time to explore CA, OR, etc.

However, you can often get all the solitude of backpacking while car camping in NV. You can go weeks and not see another person in the valley. My favorite NV camping is remote car camping + long day hikes.

Generally, desert camping is easier than other camping. Tents are mostly unnecessary. Rain is infrequent. When it does rain, it is enjoyable and anything wet dries in less than a day. Bears are not in that area. Insects aren't bad. No poison ivy/oak. The vegetation isn't usually too thick to easily walk through even off trail.

Talk to people when you get there. Explore and find out how awesome things are for yourself. Just because something isn't talked about on the internet or marked on a map doesn't mean it isn't beautiful/unique/awesome.

Be cautious about advice from people without a sun tan. There are lots of misconceptions about what NV is like. Stay away from the type who try to scare you or tell you there is nothing there.

Buy this atlas. Buy this hat.

Make sure to visit some hot springs.

Sorry this took so long, but here you goz I added hats, gloves, and scarves as a sort of apology for being so late:

Good outer coats: https://www.amazon.com/ELORA-Womens-Winter-Jacket-Fleece-Trim/dp/B07BS4GTJC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1540096730&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=winter+coat+for+women&psc=1

Find something warm but light and with or without a hood- it doesn't matter too much unless you plan on using it in spring, in which case get one with a hood or a removable hood.

Good hats:

Get something with clippable ear flaps. Trust me, they'll be lifesavers. Water resistance is important as well.

Good gloves:

Get something water proof and with fingers. Mittens are the worst when you have to do something outside. Wrist straps are great for keeping the snow out.

Face coverings:

Make sure it covers your face, nose, cheeks, and neck (front and back). If it goes over your entire head like a hat that's even better, it's perfect for wearing under a hat. You'll want it to be waterproof. I find face coverings work better than scarves.

u/AuggieDog · 1 pointr/boston

Hat with a brim is life-changing! You can actually see when snow is flying at your face.

Like this one: Carhartt Men's Knit Hat With Visor,Army Green,One Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005442A0K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_T4o0Bb4EQK6BJ

As a skier, I use glove liners and mittens. Mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves. I have Gordini down mittens. It’s like putting your hands in pillows! Look for gloves/mittens that are waterproof but breathable. Sweaty hands lead to cold hands so breathable fabrics are super important.

For just out and about in Boston, you can get away with much less sturdy gloves then $90 Gordinis. LL Bean, Columbia, REI all have good fleece or leather ones that are good. Hell, even Target makes pretty decent fleece gloves. Synthetic will last longer but natural fibers feel nicer.

For just going to the car, I usually stock up on those little liner gloves from Target, they’re like $5. I always keep them in my pocket or in my car. For things like shoveling, I might wear some old ski gloves or mittens that are more waterproof.

Seirus Heatwave liners are the bomb. Though I really like the feel of silk liners.

There’s really no perfect glove—you just have to find something you like.

One thing you might want to think about are gloves with touch screen compatibility— I usually look for it now with liners or gloves.

And do not forget a nice scarf—really useful for face protection when winds are bad.

u/shablamniel · 1 pointr/ftm

Ok, so I ran a quick search for you and here's three I found that roughly fit what you're looking sure. I'm not sure what your budget is so I listed a few for $30 and under. Needless to say, if you have more to spend, you have more options.

Here's one for $20 with a zipper. It is a faux leather, though, so it might still appeal to your dog.

this one is about $26 and seems to fit all your requirements. Another faux leather.

this wallet from Herschel for $30 It has a snap coin pocket rather than a zipper, but the effect is the same.

I can't attest to the quality of any of these, but they seem to roughly fit your request. Btw I found all of these by googling "men's wallet coin pocket" and variations thereof. Amazon, Zappos, and eBay are all good places to find lots of different styles at reasonable prices. Best of luck.

Bonus: if anyone else stumbles upon this post looking for a slim wallet, and you have a little more cash to spend I love my Bellroy wallet. Had it for about two years and it even fits in the tiny "pockets" of lady jeans. Lady jeans!!!

To ride a roller coaster. I am terrified of heights and a super fast, out of control, looping cart with me inside it just does not sound like my idea of a good time. Went to Carowinds which is the closest theme park to where I live. I usually let them do all the rides they want and opt out except for water rides. This particular trip they took no for an answer and I ended up on The Cyclone. Although it is not the craziest roller coaster there it does more than I feel comfortable with. They kept begging and begging until I was just tired of hearing their pleas. We jump on and I immediately regret it especially when we start going up and up and up. We head down and hit our first loop which I noticed was not as bad as I thought it was going to be - I actually enjoyed it. The ride was only a few seconds long, but I jumped back in line. I was excited since I had never rode a roller coaster in my life before then. I wouldn't go near the others though. lol

time to end boredom

Awesome item - I love hats. I have a few and they are getting worn out so it would be incredibly awesome to add a replacement. Plus I love this style of hat. :)

Happy Birthday!

u/HorrorKuchen · 2 pointsr/steampunk

Ah, now with this I got some more ideas :D

Hope you don't mind if I sprinkle in a liiitle bit of cliche things!

For an explorer type character I would use a tropical hat as headgear like this:

https://www.amazon.de/Mil-Tec-16687000-franz-Tropenhelm-khaki/dp/B005MYB3UK/ref=sr_1_2?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=tropenhelm&qid=1566891114&s=gateway&sr=8-2

or this:

https://www.amazon.de/Mil-Tec-16686000-Brit-Tropenhelm-Khaki/dp/B005MYB35K/ref=sr_1_3?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=tropenhelm&qid=1566891114&s=gateway&sr=8-3

perhaps add a light ontop or in front of the helmet (If you don't mind damaging/remodelling the helmet)

for the torso you could perhaps use something similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/First-Class-Short-Sleeve-Uniform-Shirt/dp/B00E1SEJA4/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=uniform+shirt+tan&qid=1566891269&s=gateway&sr=8-1

If you want to go with a more militaristic/tropical explorer kind of vibe.

I would also recommend using leatherpouches for belts and a leatherpouch for a canteen since it makes you look like you're always om a trip.

So now for the most fun and steampunky bits of this costume :D

If you're an explorer you may want to choose how and what exactly you explore from the world. Maybe your character is a timetraveler (classic in Steampunk but still nice to see different takes on it) and always carries a backpack like device on his back that helps him to shift between timezones. With machines like this you can go crazy with your imagination :D perhaps add a clock to it, use some gears in logical places like inside the machine or somewhere where the mehcanism is exposed. Add some LED lights to the inside so it glows out of the machine etc. etc. I think you got the idea.

I have to admit, my idea here is also somewhat of a cliche but I dig the tropical explorer kind of look. But in the end it's up to you what you want to make. Hope this helped! Looking forward to your finished work \^\^

If you want a step up from trying to breath through a scarf or whatever, there are heat exchanger masks that do a better job of warming the air with less resistance to airflow. Only needed if you have problems or are in very cold air, but it's good to know that that option exists, and it also has a side benefit that you stay warmer and can reduce the number of warm layers you wear.

There are more, but those are a few of them.

u/NobleH · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Here is an amazon link to a bunch of cheap but wellish-made dad caps.

Those are what I would recommend for you hat wise. They fit most climates, are very casual, and provide the shading you need.

u/Sambuscus0 · 1 pointr/airsoft

Sorry for the late links, I was a bit busy earlier, but this is my marpat kit-

Black Combat Shirt by Condor

Chest Rig (Condor Recon in OD)

MARPAT Pants by Rothco - cheap but comfortable and practical

Condor OD Green Baseball Cap

Unintentionally mostly Condor, but they're a great brand that offer high quality at an affordable price. I also run a hat instead of a helmet for preference and comfort, but that's up to you if you wanna change it.

u/Jedibrad · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Personally, I would recommend a Wigwam Watch Cap. I got mine a few days ago, so I'm not sure about durability, but it seems solidly built and quite warm. If you bump up the price, you could get a Smartwool Merino Wool Beanie which would be softer and might even last longer. On the other end of the spectrum, you could save a little bit of cash by buying U.S. Navy one, but you have to be careful -- even though they have the "Genuine 100% Wool" tag, some of them are actually acrylic. This one seems legit, check it out.

u/quince23 · 11 pointsr/casualknitting

Weirdly, the nicer the yarn you use, the more likely you are to "save" money vs buying retail. For example, a ribbed cap for an adult might take me 75g of Andean Treasure, or just over $10 of materials if I were to buy full retail price, which I don't (there are sales all the time, and I buy from stashes on Rav). A basic alpaca ribbed cap on Amazon costs $40. So knitting can save money if you have expensive tastes and don't mind spending the time :)

A similar hat in acrylic would cost $5 or so retail, but still cost at least $1-$2 in yarn.

My favorite internet sources for affordable yarn are Deramores for acrylic/blends, Knitpicks for cottons and non-specialty wools, and Webs for merino.

u/crazyengineerbikeguy · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

Pretty much the same thing, but a wool neck gaiter and a Cambridge Mask Company face mask. It's meant for particulate filtration, but the breath exchanger helps immensely in the cold weather too. It's kind of like https://smile.amazon.com/Ergodyne-N-Ferno-6970-Balaclava-Exchanger/dp/B0091CC38A, but less of a hassle to put on/take off. The mask loops over my ears and I can pull the neck gaiter over them and my head.

I've always got the Ergodyne mask if the neck gaiter/face mask combo doesn't cut it, but it's worked fine so far.
