> I would be indebted to you if you reminded us what you did and how you did it. I love creating DIY gizmos, and recall your setup being a very manageable blueprint.

I suppose we can arrange that.

---

TL;DR - 101 Ah Battery, DIY Distrubution Box w/ Banana Plugs, Mount/CCD/Arduino power cord converted to banana plug, 12V Laptop Power supply and 110V DSLR power supply hacked up, a few bits and pieces, couple of solar panels thrown in for fun.

---

The long version

===

  • Start with the battery. Mine is an EverStart 101Ah from WalMart.

What's important is that this be a DeepCycle or Marine battery, designed to deliver low current for extended periods of time (vs LOTS of current QUICKLY, like when starting a car) and be drained to low amounts of remaining capacity and recharged many times.

You completely do not care about "CCA" - Cold Cranking Amps. If your rig ever draws more than 10-ish Amps or so at one time, you have much bigger problems than whether your battery can deliver it. :)

What you're after is capacity, in AmpHours. I'll talk below about how to calculate your needs, if you're really wanting to be picky...but suffice to say, 50-100 Ah should be plenty for any normal AP use, especially if you'll be charging after every evening.

  • Now we need a way to distribute all that power. I built this one myself. Start with a suitable project box, grab a fuse holder (I use a 10A fuse btw), maybe a terminal block for easy connections to the input power, and some banana jacks and wire it all up with some 14 or 16 gauge speaker wire, and you're set.

Mine has banana plugs on the input side, so I can plug it into my 12V power supply when I'm at home. When i'm in the field, I have some battery clips that you can plug banana plugs into like these, but you can also rig up your own if you wish with some simple 3/16" brass tubing and some solder. :)

  • Then we've got a bunch of cables. Nothing really surprising there...it's just the various power cables for the mount, the CCD, and so on, with all their various connectors (usually cigarette lighter plugs) removed, and replaced with banana plugs.

  • Next is laptop power. This is the result of hacking apart a 12V laptop power supply (That company makes more, for several different breeds of laptop) and stuffing the guts into a small project box. Isolated the input power inside the guts, and connected it to some banana plugs.

BE VERY CAREFUL HERE The company that makes these uses black for negative, and red for positive. Great way to get confused and short your power supply, etc.

  • Finally, the DSLR Power for when i'm shooting planetary/lunar. This one takes the most "hacking". You start with an AC power adapter for your DSLR. All you really need is the camera end...the plug, and the little adapter bit shaped like a battery. In fact, sometimes you can buy them seperately, though they're often as much or more than the whole power unit.

Next, read the power supply to see what its output is (or use a multimeter to find out). It is a pretty safe bet it'll be 7.4V, since that's the output of a 2-cell lithium pack, which is what most of them are these days, but check and be sure.

The, grab yourself a little step down module (You can find those in packs of 10 or more for less per piece if you think you need extras for other projects), These guys are slick....just hook up your power supply and a voltmeter, twist the little gold screw to adjust output power, and when it gets to 7.4V (or whatever your DSLR needs) you're all set.

Clip off the output cable and plug from the DSLR power adapter, solder that onto the output side of the step down module, hook up some banana plugs to the input side...done. 12V DSLR power for the night.

  • Finally, because it seemed fun, I grabbed some good monocrystaline solar panels and a charge controller, and rigged up a little wood frame I can set up
next to the RV. No picture, I'm too lazy to drag them out of the RV storage. heh I do want to be clear, though...having some solar recharging capacity is not necessary at all unless you're just crushing this rig for power (see below), but it IS pretty cool and gadgety if you're into such things. :)

    ---

  • Ok, smartass, how much power do I actually need?

Easy...you need the number of amps your rig pulls, times the number of hours you'll be using it, times the number of times you want to use it between charges, times 1.5

The two biggest consumers in a typical AP rig will be the laptop and the cooler on a CCD if you have one. DSLRs, focusers, tracking mounts, etc...None of these things use much power at all, and they use VERY little on a constant basis.

Best way to know for sure is simply to use a multimeter to measure the current each one is using under its highest load. In other words, measure the mount while it's slewing, the CCD while it's cooling, the laptop while it's screen is on and drives aren't sleeping and battery is charging, etc.

Add all those up, that's your current needs....you need to be able to provide that many amps at any given time. (That number almost CERTAINLY ought to be under 10A, hence the suggestion of a 10A fuse above).

Now...multiply that number by the number of hours you'll be running the rig. Say you pull 5A, and will be imaging for 6 hours. That's 30AH of capacity you'll use (if everything's running at max).

Now..maybe you want to be able to go camping for a weekend, and not recharge...so you want to shoot for 2 nights. Ok. 30Ah 2 = 60Ah.

And finally, give yourself a nice cushion, so you don't drain the battery completely (a deep cycle CAN handle it..but they still don't "like" it). Let's say 1.5 times the need, so 60
    1.5, 90Ah.

You can quite comfortably figure on a 90Ah battery getting you two full nights of use, with no worries. :)

    For what it's worth :

I run a cooled CCD, a Losmandy G11 mount, a Toshiba laptop, an Arduino-based focuser, AND support my son and I recharging our RC batteries (various 1.8Ah - 4 Ah capacity 2-6 cell packs) all off the same 101Ah battery. We can pull a complete weekend (leave on Friday afternoon, image Fri/Sat nights, fly Sat/Sun day) RC/Imaging camping trip and come home with about 20-30% capacity left in the battery. With the solar rig added on, we could go 4-5 days or more, depending on sunlight. I did my recent 3 night imaging trip with the same battery, and wasn't even down to half-empty when i got home.

A question before I start; will you be using an editor to sync things up in post or would you rather take things together(audio and video) and have them all sorted out at one time?

Here's a list of things that I think would be beneficial, but not an encompassing list. If you're trying to go for a cheap list that could still get the job done, I find that these items have decent reviews on Amazon and websites and they do offer a good starting point for a budget.

  1. The Camera: Canon EOS M2 ($250)

I feel like the Canon EOS M2 would be a strong contender. It is actually a mirrorless camera that has the same sensor as that of the more expensive T3i. Due to it's lack of popularity with photographers due to the slower autofocus, it has seen multiple price reductions. Although it contains autofocusing issues in the photography modes, it's video modes are what really helps this camera out. You have a good starting lens with an 18-55mm lens, which may be wide enough for that room at 18, but it could even be close enough for a closer image. You can even be more technical and add in other features. Also this camera has a direct mic-in line for use of an external mic, like the shotgun mic below.

  2. The Audio: Zoom H1 Portable Audio Recorder $99 OR TAKSTAR SGC-598 $29.99

Audio is key here. You want to be able to hear the pastor as he gives sermons, so you have two general models. You can place the portable recorder closer to him, giving you crisp audio at a very minimal distance, or you can attach a shotgun microphone to the camera and pick it up from a distance further away. The only thing is, would you rather have the camera do it all for you or would you rather have to sync up the audio in editing? The Zoom mic is nice because you can purchase one of these ($21.38) and mic the pastor up before service to give a very crisp lapel audio.

  3. The SD Cards: Sandisk 64GB 80mb/s ($22.49)

    This should be a given.

  4. Power and Adapters: AC Adapter ($15.50) OR 2-Pack Spare Batteries($28.99)

You can choose to have it either plugged in the whole time during recording, or you can have it run off of batteries. Your personal preference.

  5. Tripod: AmazonBasics 60" tripod ($23.49)

You requested a tripod for the ease of use.

Given that you live in the US, after taxes, you're essentially looking at a $500 setup for all of that equipment. That may not be the best equipment for people or even be suggested by anyone else here, but that is just my $0.02.

About

PirateBox software runs on inexpensive hardware to connect users over an offline wifi network. Join it and your browser redirects to a simple interface where you can share files, chat, and stream video.

Pifm is a small program you can install in a Raspberry Pi PirateBox, aka “pi(rate)box.” It can broadcast on FM radio to inform potential users about the PirateBox wifi network, play uploaded music, and with a USB microphone Pifm lets you talk live to your audience.

Improvements

The first version of this project was well received so I'm back to share design and documentation improvements. Pi(rate)FM Zero is now fully self contained. It turns on and off with a button press and can automatically broadcast information about the wifi network over empty FM stations at user defined intervals.

Controversy

Back in March I was told the FCC would raid me, disassemble my pi, fine me up to $50,000 and label me a terrorist. I'm happy to report none of that happened :) The FM signal may be messy but it's also short range. The Pifm developers claim it can broadcast up to 100 meters. In my experience (with a 20cm antenna) it goes no further than 40 meters.

To my understanding this device is legal in the US under 47 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Section 15.239 and the [July 24, 1991 Public Notice (still in effect)](https://apps.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-297510A1.pdf]. From the FCC's website:

>Unlicensed operation on the AM and FM radio broadcast bands is permitted for some extremely low powered devices covered under Part 15 of the FCC's rules. On FM frequencies, these devices are limited to an effective service range of approximately 200 feet (61 meters).

Thanks to everyone who shared concerns over Pifm's legality. I took /u/QuirkyQuarQ's advice and experimented with a 100 MHz low-pass filter. Unfortunately, the FM signal leaks through the network adapter. I'll continue to look into it. Pifm may cause interference but there shouldn't be any trouble if you keep it away from airports and don't attach massive antennas to it.

Why not use a car/smartphone FM trasmitter?

You totally could. It might even be better in some situations if you don't mind a slightly larger, more expensive device with an extra battery to charge. Keep in mind you'd lose the ability to live broadcast with a microphone or play audio directly from the PirateBox.

Going forward

In my next version I'd like to improve the PirateBox interface and make a way for users to rate playlists while having Pifm automatically play the highest ranked tracks. Users could upload music and vote on which tracks gets played. It'd be your own personal short range interactive digital-analog radio station hosted on a private intranet.

Bonus**

Here's a .img file for your convenience. Just install it to an SD card (at least 4 gb) and run it in a Pi Zero to get started. Note: auto broadcast on FM isn't enabled by default so you'll need to add a cronjob as detailed in the guide if you want to activate this feature.

I was testing a 12W charger with my iPhone 7 just before my iPhone X arrived and I documented the charge over time. Based on their graph, the 12W is about twice as fast as the stock 5W charger (as I guess you might expect).

I haven't finished testing the cheaper wireless chargers yet, but from the ones I have tested I've found that the cable and the charging brick can make a huge difference... more so than the charging pad/cradle itself.

Cheaper cables and charging bricks may result in half the amp throughput as a more reputable charging brick and a good cable. So far... Apple, Anker, SyncWire and NestCam usb power supplies have been the best.

If you want a wireless charger right now and you don't want to spend $60, I'd recommend this one:

http://amzn.com/B01N1WRNOB

The cable it comes with is good but power supply isn't great... if you've got a 2.4A power supply from Apple or Anker, use that instead and you'll get about 25% faster charging. If you want to buy one, get this one:

http://amzn.com/B071YMZ4LD

But at that point you may as well spend the extra $20 for 7.5W, unless you prefer the stand style charger (I do, mostly because it's easier to get it right on the coil).

I'll do a full review once I've got more mileage on them.

We wanted to make a sturdy box, but actually stumbled across our PS4 box in a closet. For cardboard it's very sturdy. We took the top lid, and have it propped up, with supports holding it about 3 inches from the bottom of the box. We put the USB cables and USB hub chargers under the top part of the cardboard, then thread the cables around the outside of the top. We put velcro on the phones and the box to hold them in place. We put a two outlet small extension cord in the box to plug the USB chargers into, and have a single cord running out to charge all 12 phones. We reinforced the sides with duct tape, and velcro-ed one side of the top down to the box so it opens up like a lid. I saw some pictures of boxes with hidden bottoms, and also some charging stations like the Anker one that fits with 5 port hub, and it gave me the idea to make a large one that would hold all our phones without messing cables everywhere. It works quite nicely.

Here is the Anker one:

And I'm saving up to buy this one to place on my TV stand for Perk Live, since it puts the microphone at such a nice angle.

I don't have one, but it looks like at least the Best Buy in Inver Grove Heights might. Though it says there are 3 in stock, so you might want to order online and choose in-store pick up.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-wall-charger-for-microsoft-surface-pro-3-and-4-and-microsoft-surface-book-black/4610900.p?id=1219776964093&skuId=4610900

If you price match them to Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Power-Supply-65W/dp/B01698T1TC (or at least try to) you can save a few bucks.

I only have a Surface RT, which has a totally different charger. Sorry, man, wish I could help.

u/bemental_ · 2 pointsr/PacificCrestTrail

If it's only you using the 10,000, it could be OK.

I carry a 20,000 mAh battery pack for myself alone, and on the AT there were a few instances where I came close to running out of juice.

And that's the AT. Where you're never more then a few miles from a road or civilization. And I'm a tech savvy kind of guy who doesn't waste power willy nilly.

It all depends on your usage, but if it was me, I'd up the capacity a bit - especially if your electronics are the primary means of navigation and they don't have replaceable batteries.

The whole "have and not need vs need and not have argument"

Regarding "quick charging", unless your device specifically supports it and you have the proper cables and chargers, the best you're going to do is pump as much juice into the device in as short amount of time as possible.

Your typical phone charger (think little white/black square with one USB port) is one amp, while a larger device charger is typically around two amps. In this situation more amps equals faster charging.

They do make slightly larger chargers that provide multiple two amp ports on them, I recently switched to this one. Can charge the two biggest batteries I have at once (typically the phone and battery pack), and not worry about having to chose one or the other.

On the AT I used a single two amp charger for my battery pack and devices, and came up short a few times (ran out of time charging and didn't get enough juice). What saved me was I had a large enough battery pack that I could make it work with what capacity I had left based on the number of expected days to my next stop.

Also, if you're going to Nero at all, it usually means leaving your devices to charge while you go run errands. If you can only charge one thing, you'll very likely run into the time crunch I mentioned above - being able to charge two devices at once helps solve that problem.

Also, some battery packs provide what's called "pass through" charging, which allows you to effectively daisy chain your devices and charge them all - plugging your battery pack into the wall charger, and your devices into the battery pack while it's charging.

If I was you, I'd do some napkin math on how many recharges you expect to get/need based on your devices and go from there. It's not 100% foolproof, so you can calculate a small percentage of energy transfer loss for weather and heat loss while charging, but basically take the mAh of each device you're bringing, multiply that by how many chargers you think you'll need during a given stretch of time, and add it all up. If that number is bigger then, or close to your battery pack's capacity, you're cutting it too close.

Here Is a chart comparing charging speeds. At best the one you linked will charge at 7.5 W. If it’s not compatible with some special Qi thing that Apple does it will charge at 5 W.

The best budget charger is to use an iPad charger. Or look for a charger that can supply 12 W per port like this which can charge 2 devices quickly. You can use the cable in the box and it works fine. For cars anker also makes this which does the same.

>Is the direct DC power connector weak? It looks a little weak compared to a Thinkpad connector but maybe its fine.

It's not weak feeling to me at all. I came from a MacBook Pro with MagSafe which was exceptionally hard to break, so by nature it does seem weaker than that, but not bad

>Will this 98Wh USB-C battery charge it?

It might, but not quickly. They Vega models ship with 150w PSUs

>Is the official Spectre USB-C battery too expensive for what it is?

Yes. It looks like a 60w capable pack so a third party could match it but 60w won't charge it very quickly

>How is Linux working with the latest 4.18 or 4.19rc kernels and latest Mesa stacks?
>
>Has anyone had success with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed?
>
>Has anyone had success with Qubes (the normal non-Vega seems to work by report)

I have no idea, don't use linux

>Has anyone had good results with undervolting and what are their numbers?

I was able to run a 100mV undervolt that was fairly stable. CPU temps didn't get about 80c. Just up to the silicon lottery

>What kind of battery life could I expect with Linux using mostly Visual Studio Code, Firefox and mostly light-to-medium PHP in an Ubuntu VM? Maybe with 15-20 minutes of non-GPU assisted youtube.

I have no idea, in Windows I get about 5-6 hrs of Visual Studio Community

>Has anyone tried the Toast wooden skin? It seems pretty cool if I could get it for less. I'd prefer probably just a more fitting carbon skin but this does have charm. Does it interfere with thermals? Is it a stupid idea or is it cool?

I haven't

>Are the refurbished units more likely to be due to coil whine or a faulty case or just someone not liking the unit? Are the refurbished units of normal quality. I ask because they can be a hell of a price but I don't want to get a subpar unit that just got kicked right through the system without fixing it.

I personally didn't want to gamble since HP is not known for it's customer support. I imagine a lot are returns that are cleaned and repackaged, some are probably units that shipped with something defective and were rebuilt.

This one is a beast. 3.5amp and it works great. Also used an Anker Powerport 2/4 and they both are great and similar dimensions to Apple ones and beasty too. Just make sure you have a good USB cable.

Because it's the simplest solution, AFAIK.

The other solution would be something like this ( https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B076P4P93T/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_0sWqDbNE10RGA) which I'm even less fond of.

If the SP6 had USB-C, like Go, then you can charge it directly with a C-to-C cable.

Cheers.

If you can, try grabbing one of those 5W or 10W chargers. Anker makes some great ones. They usually run about $10-$20 depending on the model (some are multi-port, some have fast charging, some have USB-C out, etc). I use this one and it works really well. You can also scroll halfway down the page to see the different models there are, too.

Basically, you make sure it have enough voltage to provide the appropriate power to the hub, then the amperage is almost like how many devices you can power at that voltage.
See what you think :)

I bought a used Surface Book that didn't come with a charger. It is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Microsoft-Aaweal-Charging-Including/dp/B074X6KZL4/

Reviews were better when I bought it, but so far I am happy. I actually bought two of them back in November (one for my laptop bag, one for my office). I haven't had any trouble. It seems to have all the same pros and cons of my Microsoft Surface Pro 1 adapter. I do like that it came with the travel pouch.

These are great for quick charging: http://www.amazon.co.uk/BlackBerry-Portable-PlayBook-International-Charger/dp/B004XKG7NM

They're high quality 2A chargers but available for a pittance because almost nobody actually bought a BB PlayBook. I use them for my phone principally, and it actually charges faster than the original one it shipped with. Plus, it keeps your USB data ports free.

BTW the device will only draw up to some maximum it supports, so you won't fry it.

As for power supplies: https://www.amazon.com/Tablet-Ac-Adapter-Google-Nexus-Transformer-BlackBerry-Phone-Power-Cord/dp/B00IJKG9R6

I wouldn't use anything else. I've gone through so many and have an official 2.5a charger and it's trash. Even not at max load before overclock I was getting lightning bolt warnings. The 3.5 amp charger is amazing.

u/Lightsout565 · 5 pointsr/GooglePixel

You'll get the fastest charging from a USB C-to-C cable using a charger that supports USB Power Delivery. I believe the Pixel can charge up to 15w max and the Pixel XL 18w max. Google's official one is a solid choice for $35. Be careful with 3rd party cables/chargers as a lot of early USB C cables/chargers have had tons of issues.

If you don't want to spend the money, you can buy a fast charging USB A wall charger but you'll be capped around 12w. Anker sells a good one cheap for $13.

You can check out an app called "Ampere" to see the voltage and current your phone is being charged at.

u/HybridCamRev · 1 pointr/videography

Sadly, since EOS M RAW video is a [third party firmware modification] (http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/), Canon doesn't publish battery life information for this mode.

That said, battery life can be a challenge with the EOS M. One solution might be a [~$40 (plus postage) external battery grip] (http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/metrix/item/pwbtneos/?s-id=borderless_recommend_item_en).

Another, less expensive, option might be a [$15.50 AC adapter] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A8O6P7U/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00A8O6P7U&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20).

Again, hope this is helpful!

u/ChadeauxTech · 1 pointr/iPhone6S

Well, it isn't a cheap charger but it's not the official one. I use an Anker charger, has two turbo power ports. But as I understand it, if a phone can't use it, it only provides the power a phone can use. Pretty fancy stuff.

It's essentially this charger, but it doesn't say when I last bought it, so it must be an updated model.

u/rasterbated · 1 pointr/applehelp

Okay, that is not available from Apple. You might be able to buy one on eBay but who knows. You can also use any USB chargers, like a charger for an Android device or iPhone. It might not charge at full speed, but it will charge.

Why do you need a new plug? If you want a new charger, I would look at something like this since Apple no longer sells iPad 3 accessories.

I've been researching this for the past week or so. I really would like to purchase the Energizer Power Pack XP18000, which can charge a laptop along with your cellphone, it's a bit too much for what I want at the moment.

I'm going to settle with the Anker slimtalk 3200mAh. I'm choosing this over others because it uses microUSB to charge (no need for another charger or cable) and it has a short microUSB cable attached to it (no need to carry a cable around).

Also DailySteals deal of the day currently is a 5,000 mAh power pack. It's labeled by a company called Vaas, but it looks like the same one as the NewTrent and the one sold on DealExtreme.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/lebanon

It is a rip off in Lebanon (100$). Try and get the cheaper version of the charger if it uses something similar.

My advice would be to ask an electronic store for one when to bring it to market, so that the second week you may get a fair price.

another advice would be to get it original from amazon here https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Power-Supply-Laptop/dp/B01698T1TCand add it to either aramex or onyourway which may cost 10$ extra shipping cost delivered to yar door.

While Samsung allows you to disable fast charging on the Galaxy phones, Google does not on the Pixel phones. If you don't want to use fast charging on your Pixel, you need to buy a charger that does not have fast charging. Is there a way to find the UL or CE cert for the Microsoft OEM brand power supply on Amazon? I don't see it here:

https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Power-Supply-65W/dp/B01698T1TC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1517609934&sr=8-3&keywords=surface+power+supply+microsoft

AFAIK, a UL or CE number does not seem to be a required field for the charger/power supply product type on Amazon. I suppose customers can always take the extra step to look up the vendor in databases:

I have the v2 34.2Ah model and have had no problems except for the cable (see below).

> an identical port for both input and output via a DC Barrel Jack plug

On the Amazon page for the Upgraded 35,000 mAh Powerbank it shows separate jacks for DC in and out, as well as USB 5v in.

>Can the V3 QI Infinity powerbank charge the Microsoft surface book while it is in use or only while it while it is off?

Both. Depending on SB usage, might be slow/barely keeping up while in use.

>How is the physical connection to the surface book?

Looks like they are now including the cable. If not, a third-party SP3/4/SB cable works fine. They have also upgraded their cable, the old one was flakey and over-priced. In any case, plug the Surface connector in before connecting to the power bank.

>What is the total power output capability of the V3 Infinity charger? Can it charge the Surface book, a tablet and a phone simultaneously?

Not sure what the total output watts are. Yes, simultaneous use would slow down multiple charging. I get about 2+ charges on my SP3.

What I mean is that, from memory, the Nexus 7 can draw close to 2A. Therefore using a charger that can only provide 1A will result in slower charge times.

So in order of charge times, slowest to fastest:

  • Charge from 1A wall charger

  • Charge from 2A wall charger

I picked up an anker 24W 2 port charger in 2016 (amazon order searched for it). link

Charges the phone very quick for an $11 charger. I put my 8+ on the charger at ~3% yesterday and 15-20 minutes later it was at 35%.

Why people still use the 5W brick is kinda odd to me. I only use it for overnight charging where speed isn’t a requirement. Why would anyone buy the $70 brick + cable required to “fast charge” when you can just buy the $11 brick and get just as fast of a charge? At least normal people, if you’re buying gold Apple watches and 512GB iPhone XS Max then you’d probably buy the official brick.
