Then we are kindred spirits. If I'd had more disposable income when I originally started looking for a bag, I would already have the Adapt pack in hand.

I love everything about the Adapt pack EXCEPT the total lack of organization inside it. It wouldn't even be so bad if there were better options for organization outside of it, but with the shock cord, it doesn't leave much usable space for that without hindering the shock cord.

There are three options that I have come up with, although there may be a better one I haven't yet realized. Here are the drawbacks of each. The pros should already be obvious to you since you've decided you like the bag.

  1. Get a different backpack.

  • Not likely to have any/all of the additional supplementary features
  • May not be as well made (maybe not US made)
  • May not be as nice looking
  • May have less favorable coloring options

  1. Get external organization

  • May hinder shock cord
  • Reduces the 'streamline' appeal of the simple bag
  • Adds additional cost and weight to the bag

  1. Get internal storage

  • Not many well constructed options
  • Adds additional cost and weight to the bag
  • May remove ability to carry certain larger items

For internal storage, I'm not seeing a lot of options that really stand out to me. Nothing that says, "That's perfect!". There are a couple options out there. The longer I look the more I'm finding as well.

From your statement, I'm guessing you're looking for something to fit inside of the rear pocket that would attach to the loop field in there. Maybe externally on the loop field on the back? Well, I'll address the inner field first.

Maxpedition Hook and Loop Mini Organizer

Maxpedition Hook and Loop Medium PALS panel

Also, check out here for some more ideas. Apparently Skinth can make any of their pouches with a hook field on the back!

For the small loop field on the outside of the bag, I'd love to get something like the Maxpedition Hook and Loop Zipper Pockets which would fit nicely up there I'd think (instead of patches).

You could also slap something like a Maxpedition EDC or a Fatty on the side of the bag instead of the rear to retain use of the shock cord.

You could always move the shock cord around though if it's an issue. I was contemplating the usefulness of the cord itself one day, and figured if I ever wanted or needed it on a bag that didn't have it, I could pretty easily source some and run it through any MOLLE/PALS webbing that was on said bag.

As far as internal organization. The best thing I've seen are dapper style organizers. Blue Force Gear makes one that seems to be pretty popular and could be used in conjunction with any Velcro pouches listed above to create a highly customizable, easily swap-able, inner organization sleeve. Since I don't know how well they'd fit on either of the fields mentioned above, this is the place I'm going to also mention Mountain Ridge Gear who also makes a few nice looking velcro backed pouches. The Grid It is another option, although I've heard mixed reviews from people who've tried them. Also, I think it might be a hair larger than the internal size of the Adapt pack. I may be wrong there though.

My biggest issue is that all of these options add up in cost and weight. You end up spending a lot of time sourcing these things and waiting for them to arrive. It drives up the cost of the total bag, and starts to pile up shipping costs if you don't know exactly what you want (buying one at a time) or have to shop several vendors. At what point would it have been better to have just gotten a bag with more organization to start with? Is it a pro or a con to have everything removable?

Basically it comes down to preference. If you absolutely have to have the Adapt pack, do it! The quality is right up there. Once you get it decked out with your pouches you will certainly be able to say it is 'Yours'. However that versatility and modularity will likely hit your wallet a little harder than a bag that can do what you need it to do right out of the gate.

Now personally, I agree. The Adapt pack is basically what I am looking for. However, in order to get it where I will ultimately want it, I'm likely looking at another $50-80 in added pouches, patches, and dappers. Wheras I could take the loss of the ability to sling the bag, and the better color options, and grab a 5.11 Rush 12 and be able to do essentially what I want to do with it without having to buy anything extra....except maybe some shock cord.

Another placeholder. My priciest item is only $50, can I add something new? If not, no biggie.

either way, a proper entry soooooooon!

Proper entry start:

  1. The thing!

  2. The person: My daughter. She's just an astounding little creature that continues to blow my mind at every turn. She can be difficult, willful and temperamental, sure, but as frustrating as it can be, it's like watching a puppy or kitten learning to hunt. Every day I watch her get a little smarter, a little cleverer, a little more creative, and it's truly amazing beyond words to watch her grow like this. I never thought I'd be so eager to sit and watch someone grow. I know she has the potential to become... beyond amazing, amazing to the rest of the world and not just to her mother and I. All that pales in comparison to how awesome, truly awesome, the tiny things she does. Like how she'll hide behind me when she's scared, but she'll still peek out and growl. How she'll be there, her face an inch away from mine, when I first wake up, and she'll whisper "morning Papa you're so handsome I love you can I watch cartoons?". How can I cope with that level of cute? I even love the way that whenever she has three of anything, crackers, toys, rocks, anything, she always declares the biggest to be the Papa, the middle sized one to be the Momma, and the smallest one to be the baby. Everything should be like her little family, and every time she does it I make rather unmanly sounds of happy.

  3. A terrible but effort filled picture will go here soon!

  4. Emm... 333. I suck at these number guessing bits.

  5. DONE!

Its pretty average, i have one so i will share my opinion on it.

The pro of this bag.

This bag is lightweight and the material itself can repel water without the rain cover so i suspect using it on light rain is fine but for heavier rain the cover will be useful.

The belt strap is removable (which i did) and it is comfortable for everyday use.

The bag also have a pocket for a laptop or watter bladder.

The bag have a pocket at the front which have decent organization for your pen and other stuff and it can fit various stuff in it.

Lastly the front vertical zip can fit a lot of stuff as well. But it wont fit large items because of the vertical zip have an awkward opening.

The carry handle is comfortable for carrying the bag.

The bag have decent amount of organization and everyday use.

The bag is solid and uses strong quality materials. Also the back panel really helps with ventilation so you dont sweat buckets while using it

Now here are the cons.

If you fill the main pocket or the vertical main pocket too much, it will render either pocket useless as it will fill the other pocket.

The laptop pocket is very small in my opinion and its tight fit caused some minor frustration when pulling the laptop out. Also if you dont use a laptop, it means that this pocket is a waste of space.

Another problem is that for a bag this size, it only fits approximately a small amount of stuff. The website stated that its a 16L backpack. Which in my personal opinion, its rather smallish.

The bag will not stand upright. This is one of the more frustrating thing for me since the bag cannot stand on itself but its rubber bottom helps it stand against a wall.

And finally, This bag may state that its" covert" or "blend in the urban enviroment" and stuff but in my opinion, this backpack doesmay the exact opposite. It may attract some attention due to its unusual design.

TL; DR: The fail safe pack is a great bag for carrying your everyday essentials such as your laptop and tools but for travelling or hiking or anything that requires filling every bit of space the bag have is not what the fail safe pack can do.

I generally dont recommend this backpack since you can get away with better backpacks for that money.

If you want a backpack with decent organization and carry to work, i suggest checking out the COVRT18 by 5.11 or the popular 5.11 RUSH however the 5.11 rush is not exactly an office backpack but its organization and material is great.

Necessary? No. You can do 'MMA' with no protective gear in the buff. I wouldn't, but you can.

Useful? Sure.

Here's my take on gear:

Grappling gloves: Definitely should have a pair.
Head Guard: Unless you like getting concussions, this is useful.
Ear Guards: I don't own this currently, but it's a useful thing to have if you want to avoid looking like a fighter (cauliflower ear can affect employment similarly to facial tattoos in some situations). You can get cheap wrestling headgear though, no need for special mma earguards.
MMA Shorts: grappling shorts? yeah, you should have some shorts. Do they need to cost $50+ a pair? No. Cheap $20 shorts are fine.
Kneepads:Not necessary, but if your knees are getting busted up, wear some. Again, you can get cheap ones, so it's not a big deal.
Mouthguards: A necessary item. You don't need to spend $100 on a custom fitted one (though people claim those are very comfortable), but you do need to have one. Use it all the time. It's the little accidents while rolling, or the accidental hit when drilling that can cut off your tongue or knock out teeth-not just the big fights. A cheap boil and bite is fine when you're beginning.
Shinguard: Necessary. I don't care if you plan on kicking trees until your shin becomes made of adamantium. This allows you and your partner to spar a few rounds and still be able to walk tomorrow.

Other necessary items:
Compression shorts: Unless you're going with vale tudo style shorts, have something that won't get pulled down even if your shorts do.
Cup: A lot of guys like the muay thai steel ones, I like my nutty buddy, find one that works for you. Some people say to not wear one. If you're done having kids, maybe. Really it won't be useful most of the time. That one time every couple months that it will catch something is well worth wearing it every day.
Sparring gloves: 16oz usually, depending on the school.
Rashguard: I don't care if you're doing gi or no gi, you should have this, IMO. A cheap walmart one works fine though, no need to spend for an MMA one. Just make sure it's heat dispersing not heat retaining.

Personally, I also own some thai pads, focus mits, kick shield, tombstone pad, and I'm planning on buying some mats in the next month or so.

That said, talk to your trainers. Don't buy any gear immediately. Any gym will have loaners of all the basics. Go in there, get your ass kicked for a while, and then figure out what you want to do. A gym may specifically want you to have this or that that's slightly different from the norm.

Edit:

A good bag makes a world of difference. I have a great duffel that has a separate compartment for clothes so they don't get mixed in with my sweaty gear. I love that. It also fits shinguards/headgear/mma gloves/16oz gloves/etc with no problem. http://www.amazon.com/Hatch-Mission-Specific-Size-Black/dp/B000MAXN2U/

Some people prefer backpacks, and my wife uses the Rush 72 for BJJ, I think it could hold most of my gear also. Great bag for traveling as well. http://www.amazon.com/5-11-Rush-72-Back-Pack/dp/B005AG3YQG/

I just checked out pics of your bike. I'd go with a set of soft bags, try to get the straps under the seat if you can for passenger comfort. You'll also want them riding towards the rear so that her legs have room to comfortably sit on the pegs.

Look into a nice big tank bag if you don't have one already. They can hold a surprising amount of stuff. Look into Coretech, Nelson Rigg, etc. If you don't like any of the tank bags (not big enough etc) [I recently taught my bike how to hold this backpack like a tank bag] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VRKWR4/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). You can even do a cargo net with any old backpack or duffle that fits on your tank well enough.

A sissy bar with a luggage rack would be great for light things. You could put a little backpacking style tent back there, sleeping bags. I'd keep it to maybe 10 or 15 pounds max. The sissy bar also gives you a place to put a little pillow for your passenger for a long ride. My girlfriend wouldn't ride without one.

[Aerostich makes these] (http://www.aerostich.com/aerostich-tank-panniers.html) which you might find helpful. I've been told they sag if you put a heavy load in them, but they add options.

Cargo nets, bungee cords and 550 cord are your friends. Trash bags and ponchos can make decent rain covers. Any luggage is motorcycle luggage if you're clever enough =). Best of luck on your adventures.

I have this UK and US and it's not cheap but it's a great gadget backpack lots of pockets for phones, battery chargers etc.

The Xbox One fits in quite snuggly in the main compartment, I tend to put some foam at the bottom as the bottom isn't that padded and you can fit the power brick and a controller in the front zip pocket. There isn't much room to fit the Kinect also.

I also don't travel on a plane I just use it to transport between home/work/friends but I find it's much better than most rucksacks as it's well padded. I also use one for regular use with my 17" laptop (I have two Rush 24 bags) and really find they are the best for weather proofing, padding and the amount of pockets they have, plus they are super comfortable on the back/shoulders with the padded straps.

I know some say Pelican cases and they are probably more padded, being foam inserts cut out in a metal case, but will be a pain to lug around in my opinion. If you'r flying I would always make sure you take it has carry on to avoid too much bumping around of the Xbox.

That bag does not have a 'tactical' look. So if you're looking for one with TAC capabilities, but pedestrian looks, I have no idea other than the 5.11 Tactical COVRT 18 Backpack. It is a badass pack, very low key, and only about $100.

It would help to edit into your posts what your needs/requirements are. It's impossible to know what you're looking for with the info. you provided. There are definitely some low key tactical options, but the good quality ones are going to be at least in the $100 range.

I don't really care about the TAC look. It's fine with me. I'm a frickin' bag freak. When I was on tour I can't tell you how many bags I bought.

I was always in search of the perfect configuration. I finally found it with the LA Police Gear Operator Backpack.

I recomend this pack so much, here and in EDC, that I'm pretty sure people are convinced I work for them.

It's probably wayyy too tactical looking for you, but if it isn't, it's an awesome bag for the price, (around $50). The thing is built like a fucking tank.

The Operator pack is the same size as the Vertex. (Way more useful pocket configuration.)

The Covert is just a tad smaller than the Vertex. Couple of inches. But Way more low key than the Operator.

Anyway, add some more info. to your post, and people can help you more.

I'd also make a post in /r/EDC. Lots of helpful people over there. They live and breath this kinda thing.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y6949RT

I use it as my pistol range bag. Holds a pistol (or two), a couple boxes of ammo, lots of mags, hearing and eye pro, etc. Small bag but holds quite a bit.

I have heard pretty good things about the 3V Gear Posse as well: http://3vgear.com/packs-and-bags/3vgear-posse-edc-sling-pack.html

You should be able to find a coupon code for 3V pretty easily as well.

Both of these are obviously geared towards firearms, but that doesn't mean you have to use them that way.

Edit: I have a coupon code good for 25% off at 3Vgear. PM me if you are going to buy something from there.

First off, ditch the Block and get a mans gun. (JK, JK!!! It's a joke!)

For the knife, just go to a Cabelas, or what have you and hold a few, manipulate the opening mechanism and decide what you like. I've had the same Benchmade for going on 3 years and it's still in great shape.

For the wallet, I've had the Saddleback ID wallet for about 2 years and it just keeps getting better and better as it gets a more worn look. I love it and strongly recommend it.

Phone case: personal preference on form/function, I'm rocking the Magpul case because I like the color and minimalist design while still giving adequate protection.

Check out the 5.11 Rush 12 for carrying your stuff, I have used one every day for work and school for the last 2 years and it's great, no complaints.

u/vampiratemirajah · 8 pointsr/Survival

It seems like you may be very limited when it comes to funding for supplies, etc. If you have a few bucks to throw around, I would very highly suggest getting this pack

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01KJMK4W2?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

More important than the pack will be supplies, though. For two people, I would pack at least a 2-quart pot with a lid, eating utensils and dishes for the two of you, and bedding. You'd be surprised how much gets taken out of you when you don't have a decent spot to sleep. If you have one, bring a rake and use the hell out of it. A rake can be used to clear debris from beneath your tent, but also makes gathering/collecting tinder a breeze. The difference between a leveled-out and clean ground under a tent, and just setting a tent up where it fits, is huge. If you're in an area that receives any amount of rain, you're going to want a tarp underneath your tent as well. Couldn't tell you how many times my "waterproof" tent leaked because I chose a poor spot to set it up, or the rain water just decided to change course in the middle of the night.

Long-term, look into a solar shower. Your gf isn't going to want to stick around if she can't bathe properly, and showering before work is a must (as you may not be able to smell the campfire smoke after a while, but to other people it comes off as a "homeless" smell). Also, a bench or seating of somekind will drastically improve an outdoor living situation, but that can be made once you're out there.

I would suggest bringing a knife each, a machete (or well-sharpened kukri), an axe with one sharp side and a hammer-like side, and a shovel with a decent handle. A gun is very handy as well, but not necessary.

Are you planning to hunt/gather/trap/fish for the majority of your food? There are 5+ gallon emergency ration buckets that seem decent (haven't tried them myself), and with supplemental protein I can see that being a bargain. Otherwise, it would be a good idea to travel quite a bit from the designated camping area, as the animals have likely become weary with all the traffic. That being said, look up laws in your state to make sure you aren't breaking any (did you know that snares, gill nets, and trout lines are illegal in most states?).

Most importantly (if you bring nothing else), you should pack an extensive first aid kit. Pack more gauze, triangle bandages, tylenol, and triple antibiotic ointment than you think you'll need in a year. If you need any of it, you'll be grateful that you don't have to ration.

Also, good luck!! Feel free to pm me for more tips, I had at least a hundred more suggestions, but I felt the need to try to keep this short.

u/Shingyouji · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I have a Rush 72 from 5.11
Helmet (Fullface) fits between the Admin-pocket flap and the main backpack, as long as you keep the Admin-pocket relatively empty, so kinda outside but still protected from scratches and bumping into things. I'm happy with the backpack, quite wide, not too high to bother with the helmet, not to low to sit comfortable, waterbladder pocket and openings are nice on long rides, Molle webbing is always welcome for customisation. It's relatively big which I see as an advantage.

Alternatively you could look here some of them have helmet pockets.

Maxpedition is a great brand. I was in the same boat as you and saved up for a falcon ii and it was well worth it. There gear is top notch. That being said If you're looking for a good molle pack milsurp may be the way to go. A bush brother of mine has this from condor and he loves it. I believe it's similar in size to the condor ii from maxpedition and all you're really sacrificing is some quality in the craftsmanship. Plus with the extra money you save you could spend it on some molle compatible pouches and tac ties for add ons.

>Padding and hip belts are almost always there on anything that's more than a day pack.

I appreciate you providing a reply, however when the question is "at what point do you need X" replying with "well many designs I see always have X" does not answer anything. We both know that packs exist which do not have padding (even you admitted something not larger than a daypack has no padding). So when someone tries to find out why or at what point is it needed giving a reply of "well, most packs have it" does not help.

>For more technical or demandingly used materials you can find data sheets from the manufacturers, but I doubt that's of much practical use when an individual is making their own gear.

Have you looked at this data? I have not checked manufacturer's datasheets for this information so I do not know if they actually label "this can hold up to 50lb". I doubt they give an answer that simplistic since, for example, building a pack will have large force variations on the fabric from walking pushing the pack up and down (when the pack is rebounding from the lowest point there will be far more force on it than the weight of the items in the pack).

>Not sure what exactly you mean by ALICE type vs MOLLE,

They are common pack types. ALICE: https://www.amazon.com/Rothco-G-I-Alice-without-Frame/dp/B01LW8T5GM MOLLE: https://www.amazon.com/Standard-Desert-Genuine-U-S-Military/dp/B005FLM1K6

>The idea of being able to double a carrying system's capacity, while cool in theory, sounds like one or both configurations end up being a bad compromise in practice.

Possibly. However, it is something I want to look. I mean what is the point of giving up early on saying "well, that might not work so do not try it". It is far more interesting to at least bother trying to figure it out instead of just "eh, nah". Additionally, the point of the MOLLE system was to be able to add additional capacity to it so it can work at least to some extent. There are things such as http://www.neotrekk.com/ which do allow you to add or remove most of the load as you want. So, I know that it is possible to have a design where you can add or remove capacity. The only question really is: can I figure out a design which I like?

The other potentially mitigating factor is that I probably want the starting size (without added things) to be quite small. In normal activities I might need:

poncho, paper, pen, ereader, wallet, keys, deoderant, chapstick, utility tool, maybe other things like headache meds or small additions

Everything would probably fit into a briefcase (I would check if I had one). Maybe this would scale to be usable for a weekend hiking trip (example size: https://www.amazon.com/5-11-Tactical-Rush-Backpack-Black/dp/B0019VWSQ8/ref=pd_sim_200_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0019VWSQ8&pd_rd_r=EPY30JCASR2K7R8VE85W&pd_rd_w=Pnfeu&pd_rd_wg=eK72T&psc=1&refRID=EPY30JCASR2K7R8VE85W). So, that is a very large increase in capacity, however I am unsure why it would be so difficult to design a bag which after I add compartments ends up similar to that example and I take compartments off as they are not needed.

You telling me "well, it will probably not work" does not really help. If you had pointed out that the military stopped using systems where you add and remove compartments years ago and they just use strap systems now, it would have been something I already knew, but at least you would have provided a reason for your point of "well it probably will not work well", and it would have been not a good enough reason to make much difference haha. If you had somehow provided examples or an analysis which explained that you cannot use a support system for a large bag on a much smaller bag because of {insert reason} so you cannot scale the bag, that would have been a great reason for me to stop thinking about it.

for all those who want prime shipping, you can buy this bag on amazon. it was a little cheaper when i snagged one, but 22 bucks is still pretty damn good and you get prime shipping.

personally i think the bag is pretty shitty, but it is a much better choice than the old laptop bag i was using. definitely going to be trading up to something nicer, but if you're strapped for cash this is an ok choice to get you through for a bit.

i also highly suggest picking up some d-clips for the webbing on the back.

That looks like a great bag. I might have to look into one. If I'm not carrying a plain boring duffel bag I usually have this. It has a ton of pockets and you can pack the shoulder straps entirely inside the bag (useful when gate checking). It has carry straps on both sides so you can lug it like a suitcase if necessary. I also really appreciate the extra chest strap that connects the two shoulder straps as it makes the bag much more stable on your back. I wouldn't use it as a hiking bag but I've used it on my motorcycle plenty and it's been great for airports. I've also never gotten a strange look from security for carrying a military style pack. I actually once went through security with a .22 round stuck in one of the folds of the bag (I take it to the range on occasion) and didn't notice it until the hotel.

It's not the most fashionable but I'm currently using the 5.11 Tactical Rush 72. It has a TON of storage, webbing and it's super east to access anything you need. Plus, it's water repelling, durable and super comfortable. 5.11 makes smaller sizes but I prefer this one since I can cram anything I want into it.

Not really a gig bag, but I have this backpack that can hold an unbelievable amount of stuff inside of it. I am pretty sure those three would fit just fine - I recall being able to fit an iRig Keys 37 (about the same length as MicroKorg, and longer than Bass Station 2) and a NI Maschine + my MBP 15".

Maybe a little pricey, but you can see the reviews - this backpack is built to last. I've had it for about 2.5 years and it's still holding up as if I bought it yesterday.

u/soloxplorer · 6 pointsr/bugout

I use a 5.11 covrt 18 backpack and a pair of 5.11 covrt tech sleeves for situations very similar to what you describe, and this is perhaps the last "urban" backpack I'll ever buy. I've had it since 2012, and I've used it for everything ranging from airplane travel, light-duty day walks in the woods, EDC for work, motorcycle riding, and other odds and ends where it gets tossed around, and it hasn't faulted me yet. A lot of smartly placed pockets, and when you add the tech sleeves to the shoulder straps (there's velcro that will accommodate the sleeves that's integrated into the shoulder straps), it's almost like it's not necessary to have pockets in your clothing anymore. It will accommodate a 2L water reservoir, but IMO that's pointless since I feel an urban pack loses some discretion with a water tube coming out of it. So I've re-purposed that portion of the pack and go with the water bottle holders on the sides. There's tons of flexibility in this bag, which is why I love it and always recommend it.

Why not take a 127 of your 500 dollars and buy yourself a 5.11 72 hour bag. if that is a too much then I suggest hitting the local military surplus store and buying/building an alice "hellcat"(google it).
You seem to have everything but I get the feeling your lacking in having tried these items out. May I make a suggestion. On your off day, say it's saturday from sun up to sun down live out of your bag. And I'll tell you the things your going to see right away.
Your lacking a more solid and durable utensil and mess kit. Find something metal for your fork or spoon and add a squishy bowl or folding platic plate too.
You need a second mode of holding water, add a water bladder to your bag (wait till you get a new bag before you buy it) your itemization is a bit off. I suggest making a small holding bag for every catagory. Your lacking in the ability to carry anything extra with your bag. I'd look up furoshiki to help you with that. Your food choice is really bad, the weight of your soup is a bad choice your bars are not a meal replacement and they'll hurt your moral over time. Think dry, think moral when it comes to your food. Here's my plan for you, take 250 dollars and buy a good rush 72 bag and a food thermos the biggest most solid one you can find then add a nice solid kabar while your at it. If you shop around all three will set you back about 250 bucks.
From there go out to your local grocery store and pick up some lipton chicken noodle soup, the dry packs that just need hot water. Pick up some uncle bens boil in bags rice. Then add in some grains that are easy to cook. Switch up your bars for those beefy weight lifter kinds.
If your not going the mountain house or MRE route then at least get the best over the counter food you can.
After you look into furoshiki buy a measure of cloth and practice wrapping shit.
While your at the grocery store buy some thick straws, cotton balls, petroleum jelly, and a square altoids tin. Then look up how to make some fire straws.
You're better prepared then 80% of the population but lets boost you to 90%.
If your really really cheap start at the 99¢ store and thrift stores to get all the things I suggested. But the three things you should spend money on are your knife your bag and your cooking set.

Paramedic Here, and yeah i know its Australian, but im so glad i bought over my Plat-A-Tac Police Duty Bag.

I worked on a solo car and this is brilliant. Clips to the passenger seatbelt so it doesnt fly around when you brake/accellerate.
Huge enough to fit all you need. Approrpiate number of pockets and pouches without being too over-the-top.

Came with a nice little divider for documents ect.

Has lasted me... ohhh... 6+ years now.

Alternately, heaps of medics used these Mil Tec Backpacks as both personal kitbags and as ALS kits, and highly reccomended. Heaps of space for stuff and not too bulky. Plus the nondescript backpack style means you can carry it around without screaming “copper”

I own, and would recommend the Rush 24 from 5.11 tactical (around 100$ at the right places) it might have to much of a military-look for your taste, but it has a tonne of great features, is very durable and very fairly priced (compared too similar bags). It is very roomy and the zippers can go all the way down so you can put things in the back easier (and actually 'pack' your bag instead of just shoving everything in with force. It has 2 main compartments and a compartment for a camelbak if you wanted to drink from that. It has other small pockets and a pocket lined with some soft material for your cellphone. It also molle webbing at the back if you want to hang things on it.

It is very durable too. But you can look up reviews online and see how it works and what kind of features/pockets and straps it has.

u/Ken_Mcnutt · 46 pointsr/BuyItForLife

If anyone is interested in this style of pack, I would recommend the rush series by 5.11.

They're a bit pricier, but made better than the red Rock packs (which I have also owned). the rush series use 1000D nylon, ykk zippers, and many other BIFL perks.

I currently own the rush 12 and rush 72, with the rush 24 being a perfect middle ground

I just use a tactical backpack. Does the job of holding my giant 5000 flambeau trays, plastics, spare line, scale, etc. As a bank fisherman, i suggest getting small simple backpack. We're limited to the rods, and baits we can throw. If that isnt an issue then get a full size backpack. I always like to overpack with gear for different situations. It does get heavy limiting movement but I am a pretty strong guy so I dont mind.Bobbing thru trees and brushes, get a small.

I was in ROTC in college and used this backpack. It collapses down to comfortably carry around a laptop an a notebook or too, but can also expand out to be about the same size as a carry-on suitcase. I have brought in on training exercises in inclement weather and I have used it as my only luggage in international travel. When I have gotten it dirty, it's come out looking brand new with a little spot cleaning. All my previous backpacks I've replaced because the zipper would eventually malfunction, or I would wear a hole in the bag. I swear this one is indestructible. It has an easy access external pocket for a laptop, two main body pockets, and two smaller accessory pockets. I bought a small water bottle pouch that clips onto the side has now become an irremovable part of the bag itself.

10/10 I would recommend this backpack as a BIFL bag that will be useful for near any purpose.

u/CreativeRealmsMC · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

I started working on a kit and figure it would be good to brainstorm about it a bit. While it probably doesn't deserve it's own thread, I'd like some input about it if possible since I still have time to change things around before I order anything.

I plan on going hiking/camping anywhere from 1-3 days and potentially even more if possible.
The pack I'm currently looking into is the 5.11 Rush 72 which should fit the bill. It has a pouch for my hydration bladder (which is a must have since I live in an arid region and running water can be rare depending on where you are located) as well as the molle for additional customization if needed.

When I'm out camping I like to have the ability to fry food as well as grill it. I have a makeshift grill that I constructed out of four tent pegs and a grate so I have that covered. In regards to frying I found a cook set that seems like it would be useful for my needs. I doubt that I would bring the entire set with me (besides the frying pan and maybe the pot if I have dried meals) which should cut down on weight a little.

For my sleep system I'm looking at a Aqua Quest 10x7 ultralight tarp, paracord (for hanging the tarp plus other uses if needed), and an OutdoorsmanLab Ultralight Sleeping Pad. I'm not entirely sure that I need a tarp since it rarely rains here but I can see it having potential against sun/wind. Both the sleeping pad and tarp fold up to about the size of a bottle which will allow me to store more gear if needed. I already have a sleeping bag insert and mummy bag if need be but I don't see myself using them for 3/4ths of the year.

Lastly, I'm looking at getting a Mora Companion for bushcraft related activities.

In total all the gear weighs about five pounds which seems reasonable enough. Let me know what you guys think.

u/hobotrainrobber_ · 5 pointsr/solotravel

Thanks for your recommendations! I was wondering what are your views on 5.11 Tactical COVRT 18 Backpack I find this one quite good fit for my needs. I can throw in as much or as little and use it for a lot of stuff. Its seems quite good. However the only thing that concerns me is lack of padding or reinforcement on the bottom of the backpack.

u/tobidicus · 4 pointsr/thedivision

If you're in a sporting store perhaps, but there's a range of solid bags you can find on amazon that are much better value, e.g: this one

u/riddle3master · 1 pointr/backpacks

OP I have had the Mil-tec 36 liter, this backpack: https://www.amazon.com/Mil-Tec-Military-Tactical-Rucksack-Backpack/dp/B005KDBHWM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1518389942&sr=8-3&keywords=miltec+backpack

I would say it is very tough and durable, but you also get what you paid for. It's a very stiff backpack and while it could carry a lot, it wasn't very big on the back, rather it had more depth. So it would really mess with your center of gravity. Also one of the side molle wasn't stitched evenly so trying to put on attach a side compartment didn't work out the best for that side. Overall it was a good backpack for $36. I felt like not much thought was put into its design compared to other companies, but I guess with that price, what do you expect. This is just my opinion of one of their bags of course.

If bigger is better i would probably have to recommend the 5.11 RUSH 72. If your looking for a day pack or something to carry your crap to work then either the RUSH 12 or 24 would also work. While on the quest for the "Right bag for me" picked up the RUSH line of bags and fell in love with the 72, but it was just too massive to carry with me everyday to and from work and around town. I moved to the 12 which was too small as i carry a 15" macbook pro and tools for work, which led me to the 24 which has so far been the perfect size with some space to spare.

5.11 RUSH 72

5.11 RUSH 24

But the 72 is fantastic for backpacking or using as a B.O.B.

i'm a big 5.11 Fan, but i have been eyeballing the TAD Fast Pack EDC, But i need my RUSH 24 to fail miserably before I get one.

u/kameix1 · 1 pointr/dji

Check the measurements of the spark. I bet you could fit it in the medium sized square pocket at the bottom of the pack.

Also, as someone in my imgur comments pointed out, this bag is a clone of https://www.amazon.com/Maxpedition-432-Kodiak-Gearslinger/dp/B002XLHCFK

I think the kodiak version is slightly bigger, and probably 100% better in terms of comfort.

u/ialtp · 7 pointsr/BuyItForLife

5.11 Rush 24:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019VWSQ8

I've used it for 2 years now. Slight wear on shoulder straps (I'd recommend wrapping it in paracord or duct taping it up to prevent it), and I somehow magically lost one of the chest straps (user error).

So yeah. Not as good as the GR1 or 2, but best quality per dollar that I've seen.

u/blamehoffman2501 · 1 pointr/preppers

When building a Bugout Bag, or any survival kit for that matter, remember the rule of 3's; you can survive 3 hrs without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. So prep along those guidelines, and secure those things in that order. Have 72hrs worth of each.

Personally, I like military (or "tacticool") style bags because they are easily modified, have allot of space, and are usually pretty durable. And they look cool. I use a Condor 3 Day Assault Pack.

Lastly knowledge and training is the most important thing in an emergency since your forebrain won't be functioning that well, so having the necessary skills ingrained into your nervous system will help keep you from panicking, so have a plan, practice said plan, and train regularly.

u/Spiritfire737 · 1 pointr/photography

I bought a 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 for airsoft and convention swag-hauling. The ability to carry volume as well as a hydration bladder was a must for me. Later on I got into photography and started using it as a camera bag because I was too cheap to do otherwise.

The pack has been saddled on each side with the Hazard 4 Jelly Roll to carry extra lenses and an upright general purpose pouch (I think I have a Specter Gear pouch, but any MOLLE-compatible one will do). I have two external flashes stowed in the exterior compartment. My multitool is usually clipped onto one of the MOLLE straps on the shoulder straps and have other important bits for the shoot attached and dangling by carabiner.

Keep in mind that the material of the pack is rough and will scratch up your gear if you're not careful. I actually want to look at inserts to better protect my camera. If I ever upgrade from my Nikon D5100, I'll be looking for a new camera-centric bag.

u/Nomad_Robot · 2 pointsr/EDC

This is a good alternative for way cheaper. I've heard great things about the GR1, either way you can't go wrong. :)

u/Teerlys · 1 pointr/bugout

If you're getting one of the Costco backpacks, I actually have both of the models they sell in my own local store and ended up liking the cheaper of them better than the more expensive. For one thing, it's a bit lighter on its own than the model that has the heavy duty handle on top. Also, (again, if it's the one I'm thinking of) the zipper pull tabs on the expensive one are all metal. My fiance uses that pack daily for work and I can always here the tink-tink-tink of those things clattering off of one another. The less expensive model has held up for me for the past 3 years or so of being my back and forth to work bag, with the worst bit of wear being that the zipper pull tab I use most often detached.

For about a $20 difference, I am getting ready to order a couple of these shortly. The reviews on that pack are very positive, so it's something else to look at with a similar price.

I just came back from a 10 day trip to Disney World. I carried this from the resort to the park each day:

  • Hat & Sunglasses
  • I wear eyeglasses, so I had one of the Disney neoprene clip on glasses bags for rides they might fall off
  • Wallet
  • Magic Band
  • Pin Lanyard
  • Spare trading pins in a bag to rotate off the lanyard, around a dozen
  • A baggie of pin backs, lockbacks, and wrenches
  • Smart phone (we used the new Disney app a LOT)
  • Small backup USB battery charger if it was a long day (GPS was on so drained the battery)
  • Camera
  • Backup battery for the camera
  • Camera cleaning brush
  • Plastic Bag to cover the camera if it was too wet out
  • Large water bottle

I used a small messenger bag ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TWZGRI ) to carry most everything except my wallet, band, and hat and sunglasses. I mainly had it to protect my camera. I didn't bring a poncho this time as usually you could get under cover until the rains let up, or just tough it out for a short distance to get to the next indoor area. As for sunscreen, I usually put it on in the room before we left.

We had someone in our group with a wheelchair, and we had a backpack hanging off the back with tons of other gear (extra sunscreen, snacks, etc) but other than her medications we honestly didn't need 90% of what was in it.

As for purchases, we just shipped them back to the room unless it was the last day, where we just lugged them around with us.

5.11 rush 12 backpack. I have bought 2 from amazon. last one got stolen tho :(

Used it for everything. Taking to haul clothes at the gym, carrying office laptop/iPad to meetings, 25 mile bike ride through city, mountain biking, and even took it to 3 Disney theme parks in 3 consecutive days.

You can fit a water bladder in it, has great space and opens up 180 degrees to sort your things out. At Epcot we got rained on HARD for a few hours but we decided to keep going through the park, nothing, And I mean NOTHING inside the pack got wet.

They retail for 100 but I’ve seen them on amazon for like 70 bucks. The black one is 89 dollars right now but the price changes every other week.

I hear people say bad things about Condor. I think it's because they don't cost a ton so there's an idea that they are low quality. I've had nothing but good experience with this bag.

I have the older version of this and it's pretty OK for my work/BJJ stuff. Don't think it would have fit all my college stuff and my gear, though.

It's ripping around the corners at this point. My next bag won't be specifically for BJJ, but something like this has no reason it wouldn't work for BJJ and school.

Another option, if you're looking for smaller and don't mind a sling pack, is the 3v gear posse. This is the only bag that didn't go into storage after receiving the 5.11 covrt.
The organization is fantastic in the design. I've literally abused the heck out of it and, after 2 years, not on single failure or even a loose stitch. Best $30 I've spent.

I have a cheap tactical backpack from Amazon. Well, cheap as compared to Maxpedition or other brands. It's made really well and is pretty thick nylon, but probably not quite as thick as the more expensive brands. Very spacious and lots of Molle webbing and different pockets and pouches for your stuff. I have some smaller zippered nylon pouches that have different items that I keep in it, one has first aid, another has toiletries & grooming type items (Tide Pen LOL), another has pen light, pen, note pad, etc. Large opening has a bag inside that has water, food, etc. There's tons of room in it for just about anything you want to carry.

I bought this black MOLLE assault pack in my junior year of undergrad. It's similar to the kind modern infantry/paramilitary use, and just as tough. I've found it to be an excellent bag for a fraction of the price of regular backpacks, and have used it for years without any signs of wear. Here's a few features I like about it:

  • Only around $33
  • Very tough, as previously mentioned
  • Can be expanded as much as 36 L, or compressed down to the size of a school pack. I used this for school, as luggage, and as hiking gear. Pretty versatile
  • 2 large compartments, with a mesh subcompartment and a waterproof enclosure in the rear one
  • lots of miscellanous pockets in the smaller compartments, for pens and other minutiae

Some people don't care much for the military-ish look, but I don't mind it since the black color subdues that vibe. It also has that modular MOLLE function (adding on other MOLLE gear onto the meshwork) if you need that sort of thing.

I would def go for the cheaper one. I know so many people, myself included who spent a ton of money on a diaper bag which are the same exact thing as getting a regular bag or backpack. I think my original one was $75 from babies r us and I like the $15 regular backpack we use now much better.

That being said if you choose a cheaper option I would def look into reviews. Don't do what I did and go with a Walmart brand diaper bag after giving away my expensive one. It was under $20 but the quality was terrible. We currently use a canvas Levi's bag we found on clearance for $15 and have been for the past couple of years. It's a regular backpack with a laptop slot built in. Other than that we've never had to buy an organizer or anything else. I put diapers and wipes in the laptop part. In the regular area I have an extra outfit, some small toys, and whatever else I need for when we go out. It also has a smaller pocket which I put diaper cream, Tylenol, etc.

this is a similar one I've had my eye on for a while now but it has 5 stars and almost 900 reviews. Maybe you can surprise your husband for Valentine's Day with it.

You're not missing much, Army Surplus stores are overpriced and not usually worth the trip in my experience. I got this bag on Amazon, after trying this one first. If you want a smaller pack, the second one is nice, and the rear pocket is exactly the right size for that transmitter case, but I needed more space so that one became my son's backpack. Every three year old needs a bug out bag, right?

u/Fireplz3 · 1 pointr/ElectricSkateboarding

I thought about one of these bags to do just that. It would hide the gun well and secure it unless needed. Also room to put gear and such.

From my experience as a Medic in the Army for over years and an EMT, I can suggest that you NEVER buy an already built/premade kit. Most of the time you will be paying retail price for all the 'supplies' that it comes with.
A pouch size is good for EDC and can contain a touniquet, foldable splint and a host of ther food FA items. The next size up is like a carry satchel: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TWZGRI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl _encoding=UTF8&colid=3VL0EKUYPM7EJ&coliid=I1EMBKKHXWF36X
This one can contain an IV kit along with minor to small major injuries and ice/heat packs.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002AV2SP2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3VL0EKUYPM7EJ&coliid=I11HV7WVRYCOAY
This would be along the lines of a small to medium trauma bag. Items would include IV kits, bandages (not band-aids) of all sizes, Kerlix, Coban, stitching supplies, minor surgical instruments, drugs for sickness and injury, etc.
I would prefer a large bag, capable of holding 30lbs of medical supplies. That stays in my room or in my trunk if I'm going out somewhere for a longer length of time.
Premade kits have very, very Basic items. You can buy an empty pouch or bag and go to the Dollar Tree and find many items you'll need for cheap.

u/NotMailman1 · 1 pointr/bjj

I use this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089ZTVGM/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's cheap. It can hold 2 gis, shower kit, belt, towel, mouth guard, tape, protein shaker, 2 water bottles, and probably a bit more.

The only problem that I have with it is that the shoulder straps are able to snap on/off, so sometimes they snap off when the backpack is heavy and I'm putting it on. This isn't a huge problem and I'm much happier than with a shoulder strap gym bag.

Bring it with you. FEMA gives almost everyone (depending on their position) laptops. And they are junky old dinosaurs. The bag they give you has space for almost all of your uniform items, aside from your boots and hardhat, and some personal clothes. A decent sized backpack will more than suit your needs for an additional way to bring items with you. I myself use this as my personal bag. It has more than enough space for my needs.

I too bike to and from job /training. Have had it for a year, and it has served me perfect. No signs of ware and tear so far. So I can really recommend it, and it's fairly cheap.

The one negative I have to say about it is that its not waterproof in the zippers, so in heavy rain the content can get a little wet. But it's by no means a deal breaker.

  1. Consider bringing an extra water bottle (Nalgene HDPE bottles are light and sturdy)/hydration bladder if you have room in your ruck. Keeping water in means it also keeps water out, so you can pack stuff into the bottle and it'll stay dry (extra pair of socks, a small snack), which keeps the bottle from being wasted space. And if your hydration bladder fails and you have no backup option, you are Fucked with a capital F. Don't be Fucked with a capital F.

  2. Listen to /u/jamesvreeland. You don't pass Selection and a billion events without knowing your shit.

  3. Don't bring a North Face/Jansport bag to an event, particularly not a Challenge. I'm not saying it won't survive, but if it doesn't, it's a nightmare scenario. Not saying it will happen (I've seen those bags survive events), but you wanna minimize the risk. Go to a surplus store like James and /u/perryw said and get an ILBE, or consider a 5.11 Rush 12.
