/u/DirtySphincter - you might consider hanging on to the 60D for stills and buying a real video camera for videography and filmmaking.

With a $5000 camera budget, unless you really need to shoot video and stills with the same camera, I would avoid 8-bit 4:2:0 still/video compromise cameras and get a large sensor camcorder with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, built-in XLRs, dual card slots, unlimited recording time (no 30 minute limit) and built-in ND filters.

So instead of a DSLR or DSLM, you might want to consider one of these dedicated video cameras:

Option One

[Sony PXW-FS5 4K Super 35 camcorder - $5749 ($4311.75 after your 25% discount)] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-PXW-FS5-Camera-System-Sensor/dp/B01BGUOPF8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?m=A17MC6HOH9AVE6&s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1484344605&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) plus a [$395 Metabones Canon to Sony Smart Adapter IV] (https://www.amazon.com/Metabones-Mark-IV-Smart-Adapter/dp/B01DLFVZPO//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) for your EF glass

This camera weighs just 1.5 lbs body-only, records 1080p at up to 120 fps, records at 3840x2160p "4K", is compatible with Sony power zoom lenses, has dual XLR inputs with phantom plus an innovative electronic ND filter and an upgrade path to RAW - and produces images that look like this:

Hey Crimson! I have a pretty good amount of experience with camera work for my gaming videos!

I'm not sure what your budget looks like, so I'll start with the cheapest solutions first.

I would suggest the most easily obtainable camera for live action stuff would be just to simply use your smart phone! For example, the iPhone camera shoots with a Sony CMOS sensor in full HD! Just make sure you stabilize it on a tripod or flat surface because the auto image stabilizer is pretty terrible at times. Secondly, if you do choose this option, I would highly recommend using a different audio source. Smart phones traditionally don't always have the best audio recorders on board.

A web cam is probably your second best solution! Full HD cams can run about 50-100 bucks, but they usually get the job done. Though again, with all these recommendations, I'd suggest you use an alternative microphone for audio.

If your not willing to use cheaper alternatives like a smart phone or a webcam, then I think your best bet would be the GoPro. These products are massively popular for a reason; they can provide BEAUTIFUL footage if used correctly. You can probably find one of these bad boys USED for under 200 on craigslist. For the relatively small price tag, this is one of the best all purpose cameras on the market.

Finally, if you have a decent budget at your disposal, I'd suggest the T3i. If you only plan on using this camera for rare occasions, then I'd advise against purchasing it. However, if your hoping your channel would rely heavily on live action content, then this is it. This is your solution! It might end up running you a little over 500 bucks, but this is the camera a majority of youtube creators have been using. There is a slight learning curve, but when you get the hang of it, your videos will look fantastic.

Like I said though, never use the on board audio recorders these solutions provide for you. Buy a separate microphone if quality is a big concern for you in your videos!

u/TMA-3 · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

Yes.

I have this and I've made 2 short films with it. Admittedly terrible short films, but at least I made them. And it wasn't the fault of the camera, it was my own--because my script was awful, because I didn't know how to manage my time, because I knew nothing about lighting, composition, focal length, aperture, sound design, etc.

A Sundance-accepted feature film was shot on an iPhone. Surely if a mobile telephone can do it then a camcorder can do it as well. That's because the camera is just the paintbrush, it doesn't matter if you have a generic $1 one or a fancy $50 one. What matters is your brushstroke technique, the type of canvas you choose, your use of colors and shapes, of light and shadows, and how you mix and juxtapose and shape them. The final product will be a creation greater than the sum of its parts.

If you think you need a better camera to tell your story, then you're basically saying that your gear is more important than you are. It's not.

This is a quote from a book I'm reading now called Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art by Stephen Nachmanovitch that really stuck with me:

>"One of the illusions our flute player has to drop by the wayside is that the wonder of the master's music has to do with the new flute, or the method of playing it. It's not the flute. Sometimes we think, If only I had a great instrument--a Stradivarius, a supercomputer with great graphics, a fine, perfectly equipped sculpture studio--I could do anything with it. But an artist can take the cheapest instrument and do anything with it as well. The artistic attitude, which involves a healthy dose of bricolage, frees us to see the possibilities before us; then we can take an ordinary instrument and make it extraordinary."

Now get the fuck off Reddit and go make something great.

Hi /u/thegeekist - welcome back! The AC90 is a great camera, but time has passed it by.

In this price class, you may want to consider the new [$2250 Sony PXW-X70] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NPAJH8I/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00NPAJH8I&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (a [little less from 6th Ave Express via eBay] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=321551232221&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg)).

The X70 has a great 12x zoom, a relatively large 1" sensor, a professional 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC codec (much better than the AC90's 8-bit 4:2:0 AVCHD), built in pro XLR mic inputs, a built-in ND filter plus HD-SDI out in addition to HDMI.

Since the codec is so new, you will need to download Sony Catalyst Browse (download free [here] (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/images/products/catalyst/downloadnow.png)) to transcode it to something your NLE can use.

Here is what this camera can do:

http://vimeo.com/104434534

And here's a nice hands-on review from Philip Johnston, the HD Warrior:

Hope this is helpful, and good luck with your decision!

I have the Sony Action Cam HDR-15.

I can't claim any comparison because I've never used any other video cameras, but so far I've really enjoyed mine. I take it on every daily commute, for safety reasons and to show some of the more memorable moments to friends and family from time to time.

As for quality, it's good, but could be better. From the videos I've seen, we're not talking GoPro quality here, but for ~$160 I'm not complaining.

I've posted a few videos on YouTube:

  • Here is one on my rocky gravel road. I had the steady feature on and also used YouTube's stabilization feature. You can see that the ride was bumpy, but overall, you can still see the tress and the landscape and the lettering from most road signs. However, I think the most damning issue in these videos is that it is VERY difficult to see license plates, even from close up.
  • Here is a video of a ride taken at night. I think this video better demonstrates the quality of the video. Notice, however, that the video capture is pretty poor when the ride meanders off to a windy back road with no streetlamps. I had a lone LED headlight that I bought for ~$10. If the video couldn't see me, I started wandering if cars could. Inevitably, I ended up buying two of these very bright led headlights. I just tested them out last night and whew, they are bright! Unfortunately, I haven't edited the video just yet to see how much of an improvement they are, but will try to post it later today.

    Other considerations:

I really like the wifi feature of this camera. I rarely use my phone as the camera's remote, but I like that I have the option, and that I can show off my videos on the fly.

I'm also a fan of changing the recording to intervals. This basically allows me to use the Action Cam as a point and shoot camera. We got some good pictures during our hike up Rough Ridge the other day using the Action Cam in its housing.

Hi Kepgnar - have you seen this (shot with the XA20)?

http://vimeo.com/83437485

If you don't mind the deep depth of field, the [$1999 XA20] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3R16O2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00C3R16O2&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) will do a great job.

If you want video with more cinematic shallow depth of field that works like a camcorder (electronic viewfinder, fast autofocus, power zoom lenses, tilting LCD), you can save some money by getting something like a [$998 Panasonic GH3] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B0WREM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009B0WREM&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) with a [$40 hot shoe handle] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJGV33Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HJGV33Q&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and a couple of power zoom lenses (e.g., the [14-42mm] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J5TZVG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J5TZVG&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and [45-175mm] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J5TZWK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J5TZWK&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20)). With this camera, you can get results like this:

http://vimeo.com/67663630

This camera records to AVCHD .MTS or Quicktime .MOV, so it goes straight into FCP-X without transcoding.

Here's my GH3 with a hot shoe top handle on it:

Honest question—if this is your shooting style, why are you shooting with a DSLR? It looks from the photos that you’re working really hard to turn a DSLR into a news gathering, over-the-shoulder video camera like a Canon XF305 or something:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_280XF305/Canon-XF305-High-Definition-Camcorder.html

If you’re a big Panasonic fan (like I am), there are several options as well, including the 4K
HC-X1000

https://aax-us-east.amazon-adsystem.com/x/c/QqoeGSxR_bsc1z5Rr98iRC0AAAFsOOt5FgEAAAFKAQKlvCE/https://assoc-redirect.amazon.com/g/r/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MZCCNPG?creativeASIN=B00MZCCNPG&linkCode=w61&imprToken=HCgYyrn4D-qpX0CqWMHzSA&slotNum=8&tag=topbest10reviews-20

I’m not saying any of this to be snarky or anything—it just seems like you’re trying really hard to turn a camera that very specifically not a “run and gun” type camera when there are camera out there that have great picture quality, great auto focus, feature XLR inputs and level controls and mounts for external shotgun mics, etc. that don’t require a cage or a ton of workaround.

Don’t get me wrong, the GH5 is a great camera (it’s why I own one), but if I was mainly doing run and gun work, I never would have bought a GH5. There are hundreds ENG cameras or even prosumer camcorders that just seem like they’d allow you to capture your images at the same quality in an all-in-one package.

There seems to be this weird shaming of people sometimes around not using a DSLR, but it really doesn’t make sense. It’s about having the right camera for the work you do. If I was making a living doing ENG work or filming weddings or events (or anything where lightning-fast autofocus is a necessity), I would NEVER use my GH5 as my primary camera. To each their own, but I’d just recommend really evaluating what you’re using your camera for and if you have the best tool rig for the job.

It's very hard to find a good camera in that price range. If you have a phone that is less than a couple years old, you're probably better to go that route. That said, if you can afford a GoPro, the guys use a GoPro HERO4 BLACK as a backup camera that would be better than a smartphone in most applications. This model's built in mic is said to be much better than the new model that was just released. If you want to use an external mic, you'll need this adapter. You can also find all of their gear in a post I made here, if you're interested.

Edit: If you decide to use a smartphone, this is a pretty good mic that attaches directly to a phone.

u/xEdwin23x · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

If you just want ultra wide shots you could as well just get a pro or a camera of the like. They are more portable than DSLRs and you get the super wide field of view. Also some of the "copies" like the SJ4000 can be pretty cheap.

https://www.amazon.com/SJCAM-Original-SJ4000-Action-Camera/dp/B00MIT658W

The whole advantage of the DSLR is the ability to change lens as needed so it depends if you just have a specific purpose or want something versatile.

u/atetuna · 2 pointsr/Outdoors

The best one is undoubtedly the one that you will carry and use to get "the shot". An awesome camera is utterly worthless if it's sitting in your pack when you should be using it.

First of all, what is your budget? Are you willing to carry it in a shoulder or hip strap pocket, or clip it to your hip belt?

Go Pros are great for video and under water, but you should know about the optical distortion. Please check out the reviews, and particularly the test photos. If you want something like a Go Pro, but don't have the budget, look at the SJCAM SJ4000 and SJ5000, but make sure it's not the ones with a LCD on the side with the lens. There's also a less expensive version of the SJ4000 without wifi. I have a SJ4000 that I use all the time for a dash cam and some outdoors video, but I haven't used it underwater yet.

If you want a DSLR, Pentax makes the most affordable weather sealed cameras. I wouldn't use it underwater, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it in the rain.

u/Adam_w_g · 2 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

I'm in the market for an UltraWide in the UK as well, and the prices here are just stupid compared to the US...The one I really want is Alienware AW3418DW but I'm waiting for a good sale on it as the "refreshed" version AW3420DW just dropped in the US and supposedly will be available in Europe 18.10.2019.At the moment AW3418DW in the US is $839 = £674But in the UK the same model costs £999 = $ 1242Amazon US Amazon UKThat is basically double the price for the same item, I know that there are differences with taxes etc but this is just ridiculous. And this trend can be spotted with different brands like ACER and ASUS.I'm holding off until I spot a great deal on either the AW3418DW or Predator X34P, and would recommend you to do the same. Hope this helps

Edit: Btw If you are looking at the Z35P, not so long ago (2-3 weeks) it was discounted on Box for ~£550, so everything you pay above that is overpaying.

u/jurbaniak28 · 1 pointr/snowboarding

I have the GoPro HD Hero 2 outdoors edition, this edition will come with a lot of what you need, like sticky mounts to mount to your helmet. You will need to get an SD card because GoPros do not come with them, i went on amazon and bought a 32 GB one, http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-32GB-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-B35/dp/B002G12OBO/ref=pd_cp_e_2 there's the link for that. 32 GB is the biggest it will take and i recommend getting that, because with that the battery will die before you run out of space. Another accessorie i suggest getting is a pole mount from www.gopole.com this is the classic mount for snowboarding, it allows you to film yourself or turn it around and film friends to make those nice edits. If you are debating between HD Hero and Hero 2 go with Hero 2, its a little more but its worth it for the quality of the video, I got mine discounted on amazon http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HD-HERO2-Outdoor-Edition/dp/B005WY3TI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346967661&sr=8-1&keywords=gopro+2

u/A_Hendo · 1 pointr/motorcycles

If you're open to something other than a GoPro check out this guy on Amazon. Sony sensor, video quality is great, and there's just as many accessories. I've been using mine for a while and absolutely love it. Best part is the price, $80!

u/LCTC · 1 pointr/gopro

In canada your friend might be able to get as much as $300;

http://www.amazon.ca/GoPro-Outdoor-CHDOH-002-Camera-Silver/dp/B005WY3TI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396625052&sr=8-1&keywords=gopro+hd+hero2

but when I saw those prices, I went direct to GoPro and ordered a new one from them instead. Being realistic, your friend can probably get $150-$200 if it is in great shape. Pure speculation though

u/LampLanguage · 7 pointsr/LifeProTips

200 dollars on amazon. About the price of hiring a good photographer for an hour, and an arguably better result. Good thread OP. The video files themselves could make for great presents if it's of a friend's important event.

u/provideocreator · 1 pointr/videography

A good way to find out is to look at cameras that support external recording using something like an Atomos recorder. The requirement for these to work is a clean output. You could use a Canon HF G40. It has 1080p output over HDMI and the output is clean (no menus), which you can verify here: https://www.atomos.com/cameras/canon-hf-g40

It also has 20x optical zoom.

u/DubbleYewGee · 6 pointsr/buildapcforme

With a top end, hot, power hungry chip yes you should. The stock cooler won't really cut it. The suggested one is a cracking deal for a 280mm AIO.

The budget is definitely fine for the tower. It depends what monitor you would like. A 120Hz 1440p ultrawide like the X34 already costs £1100.

A compromise may be asking yourself to decide between an ultrawide and 144Hz.

u/Gaffers_Tape · 2 pointsr/VIDEOENGINEERING

The Sony PXW-x70 has everything you need, new it's about $2000 but there are used available on Amazon for $1,500 or so:

https://smile.amazon.com/Sony-PXWX70-HD422-Camcorder-3-5-Inch/dp/B00NPAJH8I

Also, a used Panasonic HPX-170 would be perfect for your setup:

https://smile.amazon.com/Panasonic-AG-HPX170-High-Definition-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B001E96LGI

It looks like those are going for about $1,600 used on Amazon. (No HDMI out on this one, but a $50 converter would get you by until you can get your switcher.)

u/smushkan · 1 pointr/videography

If you want to do it all through a computer, a good quality webcam like a Logitech C920. You can then use any DirectShow compatible software to record the video straight onto your PC, such as Windows Movie maker, VLC, etc. Combine it with a set of CFLs to light you up, and you'll get pretty decent quality video assuming that you've already got an audio recording setup.

If you don't have a good quality audio recording setup, another solution that would be really easy to work with would be the Sony HDR-MV1. It doesn't have wifi, but you can just sync the stuff off it using a regular USB cable; and since the audio and video would be synchronised out of the camera it will save you time when you're editing.

u/unreqistered · 7 pointsr/cycling

You don't need 4K, the Yi Action Cam would be sufficient (have both) and is currently just $50.

Riding with a camera does nothing to prevent and accident though. Before you spend money on a camera, make sure you've invested in some quality lights. You'd be surprised at the amount of road respect you can garner with a nice, bright, visible tail light.

Also consider riding with a mirror mounted on your helmet / glasses. Situational awareness can really give you better command of the road.

u/ExtolsNovelty · 2 pointsr/360video

I use the Yi 360 camera which does 5.7k and is going for $200 on Amazon but looks like it has been discontinued.
It supports 4k in-camera stitching, otherwise my computer takes about an hour to stich 4 minutes of 5.7k video at best quality, including optical flow (it refuses to use all of my CPU).

It also has a good smartphone app with live preview and playback support, and even wifi streaming to YouTube, but unfortunately live streaming is no longer a realistic option for most people because YouTube just added a new policy requiring 1000 subscribers. This really fucked me over recently after notifying over a hundred people of an event and buying prepaid cellular data.

Note that unless you have very new GPU with a particular hardware decoder chip, you will have a bad time viewing content above 4k anyway. My beefy computer with an nVidia 980Ti already struggles with 4k because of the projection so I never get to enjoy my 5.7k video at that resolution anyway.

Even downgrading to 4k from higher will improve the quality, particularly near the stitch lines. I always apply moderate sharpening as well.

And you're gonna really want a lot of disk space above 4k. One weekend of shoots I was getting half a whole TB per day.

--

Also take a look at the Insta360 Pro. If I could justify the cost I'd drop $5k on the 2nd gen that does 8k and 3D at the same time (that's 64MP per frame at 30fps!).

P.S. If you're just doing family videos, on cell phone they look ok in 4k. You might try the Tiny Planet perspective instead for desktop.

P.P.S. I started with the Samsung Gear v1 as well and recently had to edit some footage from it. I spent ages in Adobe After Effects doing a custom warp mask to handle the parallax error as best I could, because Samsung Gear doesn't do optical flow stitching.

The "cinematic" look usually comes from color grading (I could be wrong). Also, 720p seems like a low resolution. If you could save up and get perhaps a 1080p camcorder, maybe that would work better, perhaps something like [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Recording-HDRCX405-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B00R5LH9HO/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1466397276&sr=1-4&keywords=sony+camcorder)

I love my Samsung Gear 360! The first model is currently only US$ 66 at Amazon, which is a bargain! It has a better resolution for pictures and is selling for almost half the price of the Gear 360 2017 edition, but the newer model can do live streaming on Facebook.

If you want better pictures, I'd go for the older model. If you want to live stream on Facebook, get the new one.

Okay, yeah, the image you linked to is a boroscope, and that's definitely not what you want.

The Panasonic HX-A100 or the Sony HDR-AS15 are going to be your best bets.

Yeah, if you just have a chromebook the webcam won't be the best choice, but an action cam will do you just fine, however most of them will top out at about 70 min battery life.

That is the one I use myself. I can use my cell phone to line up the video and start recording, and its a great little camera.

Camcorders are pretty well priced for what you get out of it. Find somethign that has atleast x10 optical zoom. And be sure to specify optical zoom, not Total or digital zoom.

Sony Handycam is a solid device for a good price. JVC also makes decent ones too.

u/DanielArnett · 1 pointr/vjing

So the DSLR style 360 cameras are pretty absurdly expensive. You can get the original Gear 360 for really cheap. The Garmin Virb 360 looks really smooth considering it has built in stabilization and you can overlay data like gps position, altitude, speed, etc onto the video making it a really nice action cam. As for high end; Samsung has the 360 round which looks really nice.

sorry to dig this up but I have one more question: I found this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R5LH9HO/ref=psdc_172421_t1_B01950TCEU

best seller, came out in 2015 (1080p recording), and it only shows the price when added to cart because Amazon is selling it for less than the retailer suggests, so they won't let Amazon blatantly advertise for it. What do you think? It's only $250 so I could even get her some lighting equipment and other things!

I used to use the sony X3000 for my BJJ tutorials before i upgraded to my GH5 .amazon referral links included. Sony looks good, better imo than the osmo, records in 4K and has nice stabilisation.

a step up in quality (and cost) would be to record audio separately and mix in post, or upgrade to a camera that can take a mic input

u/GOpencyprep · 5 pointsr/guns

Since first party weapon mounts for the GoPro are ridiculously expensive we decided to take matters into our own hands, this one cost about $5 to make.

We took one of the flat adhesive mounts drilled a couple holes into it, which lined up with the holes on a cheap scope ring mount, then used one of the 90 degree clamps to get the camera oriented down the barrel. It seems a little tall, but we've come to realize that the height is actually perfect for getting the barrel in frame - mounting closer to the rail made the weapon take up too much of the frame (with the rifles, anyway) I'll see about posting some video / pictures from the gopro later.

I know, it's not pretty - but it works great.

I would suggest you get a real camera. I have a Canon G40 and the difference in video quality is obvious. The Canon can shoot in regular and low light conditions FAR better than a top of the line phone, and handles contrast and focus and ... everything much better. Plus you can use standard accessories like lights, wired and wireless lapel microphones which make the sound quality much better (which is instantly obvious), tripods, additional batteries, and so forth.

I would tell them they need to buy a camera for the company. A $1k to $1500 investment is nothing for quality marketing.

I would have to agree with most others here saying it a problem of the cam op and not of the camera you are dealing with. Auto settings is a thing of middle school video productions where I live. That being said, HybridCamRev's suggestion of the Sony PXW-X70 with the 4k upgrade is a great option. If you want to stick to canon, the Canon XC-15 would also be an option. Definitely look into reviews and footage from each camera you are considering before you purchase. Let me if you have more questions!

I've got a gopro knockoff called a Yi Action Camera that works reasonably well. I've got it enclosed in a waterproof case and use a standard gopro mount to stick it to my helmet. It looks ridiculous, but it works, though at 1080p there's sometimes not quite enough resolution to make out license plates further away, so I'm contemplating moving to Yi's 4k model sometime in the near future.

If I were going for a sidemount camera, I'd probably recommend a Contour Roam. It's one of the cameras I was debating when I picked one up. I went with the Yi because it was cheaper and would let me see how useful it would be and how it would work mounted to my helmet.

If you are on a tight budget getting a Yi or Yi 4k is not a bad decision at all.

Most people simply replace/overlay the original audio with music later.

If you though want to do a Vlog-style travel video a X3000 will not only give you better audio but also a high quality and stabilized video.

One advantage, which bith the Yi-cameras don't have is, that the Sony is splashproof and dustproof, which means you can use it without the case during rain/ at the beach without the risk of damaging your camera and still get good audio. With the Yi you nearly always have to use the case when you are outdoor, so it would render the already bad audio useless anyways.

It is your money, your choice. I hope I could help you with the decision with this reply.

If you have further questions, just reply to this comment.

  • Nic

P.S.: Don't forget, that you have to get a SD card (I recommend this for the X3000) for either camera.

Also you might want to get additional batteries or a powerbank to exchange an empty one and charge on the go.

Most people will say IPS is better for

  • Colour accuracy
  • Viewing Angles
  • Faster Response time?

I use a monitor by sitting directly in front, so view angles shifting is a non issue.

I also don't really care about accuracy, I'm not producing professional colour graded work.

Response time, may lead to less blurring compared to VA, but I doubt I'd notice.

At the end of the day a nice VA with deep blacks is preferable to the IPS Pros and cons, glow etc.

I would have said Sony HDR-AS15. It comes with a waterproof housing, has 1920x1080@60fps recording capability and generally decent quality - all for $130 (what's your definition of cheap BTW?).

The downside is you have to go through a complicated process to prevent fogging inside the housing - or else you'll get 5min of clear footage and the rest will be garbage. (Like replacing the housing with Argon gas - versus water-containing air).

Rather go for a - I know - GoPro Hero Edition. It can go waterproof without a case (so no fogging issues) and cost the same as the Sony - $130.

The lens on that cam has an 35mm equiv. of 32.5mm at the widest, that's very wide.

Personally i would prefer something more towards the 24mm range instead of 32.5, otherwise your face will fill too much of the frame or isn't fully in frame when you don't fully stretch your arm and that gets tiresome.

You can add and additional wide angle lens but the cheap ones are optically not that great, and the original ones from canon are expensive.

Just as an example, this Sony has an 26.8mm lens, but does not come with an mic jack.

Pretty sure the cameras are out of date tho and they use Lumix GH5s now but I can't say either way for the other stuff. Think they have Rode mics to go with them and a boom as well.

u/averynicehat · 5 pointsr/videography

If your camera is going to be situated near the audio board, you can just run an audio cable from the board to the camera (assuming it has an audio input). Something like a Canon VIXIA HF G20 is a decent choice. If that is too much, start moving down to the cheaper VIXIAs.

If the camera is positioned away from the mixer, then I'd get a small audio recorder like a Zoom H1 ($99) and plug that into the mixer. Or a smartphone should be able to record audio from a line in. When editing you would have to sync up the audio recording to the video, and mute the video's audio. It's not too tough.

u/butterbal1 · 2 pointsr/scuba

If it was me I would go with the no-pro/knock off option and just sell them.

You can get a surprisingly decent camera for pretty cheap like this 1080p model for $90.

Rent it out for $25/day with a $150-200 deposit. You will recover your investment after the first long weekend owning it and you can give renters the option at any time to just keep the camera or they lose it they already paid for it with the deposit.

Sell them a new SD card with every rental so they can keep it and not worry about if a previous user made some "home movies" with it. If they want you to do any editing you can copy the data on the boat and send them home with the raw video and upload a high res version that you cut together later.

Never heard of a place that rents them, but there's this for pretty cheap if you don't need professional-level quality. That's not to say it's poor quality, though; I've used that model and it isn't bad.

u/Smaskifa · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I tried a Contour Roam 3 and was quite disappointed. Very shaky video, and the mount fastener was not at all secure, resulting in camera launching from bike to road. Also the brightness setting didn't seem to work at all. The sky was way too bright on mine, and setting it to the minimum setting in the config program didn't seem to have any effect.

I then got a Sony AS15 which is FAR better, though out of your price range at about $160. It's an older model camera, but it can do 1080p 60fps. I usually do 30fps, though as I found that even very fast SD cards could not handle the record speed and would result in glitchy artifacts. Also, 60fps videos take up roughly twice as much storage space.

Here are a couple sample videos shot with the Sony AS15:

Amazon search returns this.

Affordable if you can spend $2,500.

My Sony HDR-AS15 has the wrong profile for the shot you did with your GoPro.

70 kts is fine. I think you are simply touching down too early. You want to avoid the ground for as long as possible, floating in ground effect until it stalls. Finer and quicker elevator input and practice should do the trick. But you're doing fine right now, so no worries. :)

I own an SJ4000 and I use it daily to record my bike commute, in case something happens. I've owned it for close to a year now. I've been happy with the camera build quality, picture quality, and the moderately happy with the accessories that came with it. Some of the mounts and clips that came with it broke because they're cheap plastic, but I've been happy with the waterproof case. Here's a 720P, 60fps video that I took this morning while on my commute. This is in the waterproof case with no openings for clearer sound, mounted on my handlebar, automatic image adjustment settings, and riding East towards the sun. Do note that this was quickly recorded in VLC and processed through VidMe so there will be some video quality degradation.

If you just need video here are a couple decent camcorders"

Sony

Canon R700

If you want a little more versatility you can look around ebay at some cheap dslrs, The T2i is around your price frame and can do video and photo.

Get an SJ4000. They connect wirelessly to your phone and can stream video.

He linked to the counterfeit of the knockoff, so, yeah. This one is the legit knockoff.

Xiaomi YI (in medio stat virtus)

Consigli? Opinioni? Perplessità?

You could always go for one of these "chinese go-pro clones" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016MAUHOK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_SOHEzbDVKKBS1

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016MAUHOK/ and it's on sale at the moment, more than decent quality for that price.

I'm currently using 2x of these (borrowed from my roommate)
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Stabilized-Optical-Camcorder-Internal/dp/B006UMMP8C

I'm not happy with how the image quality turned out, even with a bit of post-processing.

I'll probably be using an XA20 for the side cam next time:

And my Nikon D3200 for the overhead cam (I want to use the XA20 for the overhead cam but my roommate won't let me because he thinks my setup is too dangerous)
