I do want to point out r/onebag (even if you don't do just one bag) has a lot of good information. I've found Eagle Creek compressible packing cubes help keep bulk down on most items, namely clothing. I use a down puffy that packs to nothing and a few underlayers designed for snowboarding for colder weather. Both take up little space and accomplish climate versatility.

Eagle Creek also makes a garment sleeve but I've not used it, instead I just use wrinkle free button ups from Rohan and roll them. One great tip I use is to wear your dressier clothes while flying so you can avoid packing them all together. This takes the complication out of keeping business attire wrinkle free during the flight there and back. Be sure not to overpack things that can be picked up there for cheap, most of these fall into the toiletry department.

(I'm male so this may not be directly actionable for everyone, but materials may be useful*) I have 5 undershirts - the ones in heather gray are a poly blend, two wrinkle free button ups, one pair of outlier slim dungarees, one pair of western rise evolution pant, 7 pairs of synthetic reebok boxer briefs, 3 pairs of darn tough merino racer socks (which get washed by hand), 2x long sleeve base layer for both bottom and top (no link, off brand), down puffy (no link, discontinued), one heather gray uniqlo airism hoodie, and a cheap pair of synthetic shorts for the gym. Most of the stuff gets put into compression cubes or more rarely ranger rolled. It all packs down extremely well.

I also pack a laptop (Asus C302) and some of that dongle life (USB-C). I'm sure I'm missing more than a few things but my goal really isn't to provide a complete packout breakdown, just get some ideas out there for minimal packing/living. It's been a few months since I've packed my belongings into my 30l backpack and took a plane so my memory is a bit hazy but I could do it now if I wanted because I haven't increased/changed my belongings much since.

As a general rule I try to avoid bulky cotton stuff as much as possible and just go with synthetic or merino wool, stuff that will pack down easy. Freezer/gallon ziplock bags can make great compressible organizers if you're looking to save some money. The corners can be reinforced by clear packing tape, with the air pushed out for clothing as well. This is my razor of choice, as it's super light and you can pick up the batteries anywhere in the world.

For 'wet' electric shaves (a misnomer really-- most need a lubricant like soap or gel), I love the Gillette Fusion ProGlide gel: http://m.gillette.com/en/us/products/shave-gel-and-foam/fusion-proglide-shave-gel/irritation-defense-shave-gel.aspx Because it's fairly transparent, so you can easily see the skin. I found for even razor blade shaves, it provided better lubrication than a soap lather, but it tends to dry faster (so going in zones worked the best, or wetting a bit).

I have pretty coarse hair, but also sensitive skin on my face and neck. I think the electric just ended up irritating less than the blade. I can't even count how many different iterations of shaving materials and technique I've gone through to finally figure out what worked for me! Only took 15 years! :D

But I did enjoy the 'process' of the blade shaves for sure! I still do it from time to time.

I am full time, and have more hair than I want to talk about (thankfully, the electrolysis fairies are helping with that long term 😊). In the meantime, I've tried a lot of stuff, and this razor is a godsend for routine use on big areas. It works great dry, and is ridiculously gentle and forgiving, even when you're moving fast, (I shave everything with it). Also the battery lasts a long time, and it charges fully in a few minutes. If I had to buy another I'd buy the 8104s since it's less pricey. Works very well, and I am still using my original blades a year later (and getting great shaves). I've had a barber shave me with an old fashioned straight razor and heated cream etc. It was nice, but this is 99% as good and a lot cheaper (no creams/after shave crap).

I watched a few videos but really you just have to go for it. Use warm water or take a shower before shaving. I like to use a shave butter vs a cream (easier to see what I'm shaving) but that's just personal preference I guess. Shave with the grain, especially if your skin is sensitive. Usually I'll do a second pass against the grain on my cheeks and mustache area but my neck is pretty sensitive so I only do with the grain there. Wash off with cold water after.

Also I only use a double blade razor. None of that fancy stuff. The ones with like 5 blades feel too big for my face. If you really want easy peasy, you can get an electric razor, like this one.

For razor it depends on how much facial hair you grow. When I was at field training I was able to use this razor and it worked phenomenally. It runs on aa or aaa I forget which so you don't have to charge it and it's easy to find replacement batteries

For footwear bring something that can breathe and is comfortable. Don't bring boots, they weigh too much

You way want to bring a steripen

Clothes: It should be hot there, so bring lightweight clothing. For shirts, I have one of these and it's great because you can wash it in a sink, and it'll be dry by morning. Make sure everything you bring can go with everything else. That way you don't have to worry about bringing certain clothes to go with certain other clothes.

Backpack: Osprey atmos 65 I think. Go to your local REI and tell them what you're doing, where you're going, how much you're bringing, they'll be able to help you. And they sell the steripen there too.

Adapters: Yes.

Check and see if your phone will work over there. If it won't or you don't want to worry about having an iphone overseas then consider buying a cheaper more rugged phone.

I got this 3 years ago. Never shave, just trim with the sensitive clipon. It ends up getting a close cut but not as close as you would shaving, so I've never had a problem with things like ingrown hairs or pimples.
E: Oh wow. It's $67. Don't get it for that price. I got it for like $40 back then. Probably be a good idea to shop around.

I have fairly thick, wiry facial hair. If I don't shave I can have a full-coverage beard within 5 days I'd say.

When the triple-razors came out I used them for years; they worked great but are pricey. Higher-count blades (or single-blade disposables) get clogged with my hair.

I've been using an older version of this Panasonic electric razor for over 7 years now; I highly recommend it. Oh and I use it dry exclusively (I tried wet but it was more of a hassle for me).

Of course it doesn't shave as close as a blade. But it has worked consistently for 7+ years without costing me a dime beyond the initial cost (and electricity). I did buy a replacement foil/blades a few years back.

After reading favorable comments about the old-style safety razors, I bought one of those, tried different recommended blades, etc...that thing shredded my face, every single time. It did give me a shave almost comparable to a Mach III, but took longer and made me bleed everywhere every single time.

I'll just stick with my Panasonic, get a newer model someday when the batteries give out. I can't believe they've held up this long. Nice inductive charger too.

Anyway, tehn you use the scrub, rinse off, then light lather of shave cream, and shave. When done, finish up in the shower. Once you get out, pat dry your face, and apply lotion immediately!

Also you look like you have a few breakouts on your face. could be related to your shaving irritation...

I think a better title would be "My friend just found a reason to switch away from pressurized cans of shaving gel".

Your friend is already a wet shaver. She will not "switch to wet shaving" since she already shaves with an N-bladed handheld razor, shave cream/gel, and water. Don't forget that Gillette Fusion shaving IS wet shaving. The opposite of wet shaving is dry shaving, i.e., Norelco electric razors and their ilk.

To split the hair even more finely, there are BATTERY POWERED WET AND DRY ELECTRIC SHAVERS which you can use in the shower, under running water, with lather if you wish, with bowl-lather from a badger brush if you wish.

The key is to remember that "wet shaving" requires the presence of copious amounts water ... examples of which includ a Gillette Fusion shave, or a wet-dry electric shaver, or a 1919 vintage straight razor, or a Double Edge razor.

I have sensitive skin so I've been shaving electric as long as I can remember. I've gone through several electric razors and this one is BY FAR the best I've ever used. Waterproof, easy to clean, perfect shave, doesn't irritate, has a secondary trimmer, etc etc I could go on.

Normally I recommend people steer clear of shavers less than $80 USD. The exception to this is for teenagers/young adults whose beard has not fully come in yet. I am going to assume that when you call your beard "young" it is made up of softer hairs and is somewhat patchy? If so you will be able to get away with a lower end shaver.

Don't be put off by your brothers rotary, electric shavers should not be shared and if he has had it for a while the blades will have dulled according to his beard growth and shaving pattern which will always result in an inferior shave for another user. It is likely your brother has a lower model rotary or it is incredibly old if it got to the stage where it pulls/ discharges too quickly.

Now my experience is with united states models of electric shavers. However, most electric shaver manufactuers will re-release their products internationally with different names,colors and claims. This makes research an incredibly difficult task. By and large they are the same shavers however the included accessories often vary, however these have little impact on the shaving experience.

So for the purpose of my recommendations I am sticking with UK equivalents of the US models I have tested. If there is a shaver release unique to the UK then I am unable to comment on it.

If you want to give rotaries a go, the current starting point would be the Aquatouch (Our 5300). Even though lower models of Philips Norelco rotary will cut through younger hairs, their quality is suspect relative to the price.

If you want to go the more traditional route, a Braun Series 3 would be the best bet. While it struggles to cut through thicker, coarser hairs it will have little difficulty cutting through your beard. The next step down is a far inferior single blade shave for a minimal price drop.

Despite all this, electric shaving is not for everyone. Your skin and hair type is not your brothers and just because it works for him does not mean it will work for you. Then there is the break in period. Your skin and hair will need to "adjust" to the electric shaver. In the early days you may experience red blotches, skin irritation, missed hairs etc. This is all normal. It's not until 2-3 weeks of use that you will know if the electric shaver is right for you.


It is very much a trial and error thing. To assist with this, all electric shaver manufacturers have a satisfaction guarantee. I am unfamiliar if this is also present on UK models but it essentially allows you to test a shaver for up to 60 days (varies from manufacturer) to find out if its right for you. If it isn't you ship it back to the electric shaver supplier and receive a full refund on the purchase price. Refund typically takes up to 8 weeks but it is a nice safety net to ensure you do not waste your money on a product you will never use again. Please research the satisfaction guarantee if you are interested, I do not know how it works in the UK.

I've been trimming for a long time, my man. I've gone through a bunch, some better than others. The way it flexes with your face gets a more even trim, but the neck is where it really has been revolutionary for me. My neck hairs go every which direction. I've always had trouble with them. Taking off the trimmer options and using the bare razor, it handles my neck better than anything I've ever used. You can also use it on its side to give you a nice edge. I don't go to bat for products much, but I love this thing!

The only thing about these is you’d have to shave every day or every other. There best used when your hair is already short(shaving a lot of hair off will wear the foils quick) but they really work well! I believe they’re usually $60 so they seem to be on sale. I know I’m coming off very shillish but after a year of cycling through different methods, these have been the best!

It's been great to me. It takes some experience and trial and error to get it to work perfectly with your beard (probably give it 3 weeks). Now that I've been using it for 3 years, I get an extremely close shave in about 2 minutes with zero pain and zero cuts.

The blades that come with the thing are supposed to last 1 year. I finally switched the blades after 3 years and I don't think it was even really necessary. I would *never* go back to a blade type razor.

What I found to work the best for me, although it sounds counter intuitive, was to put nothing on my face while shaving with this shaver. Just the oil from my face is actually the perfect lubricant. Other soaps, lathers, water, etc. all produced a worse shave. Then I wash my face after shaving and good to go. Smooth as an expensive razor and I stopped getting ingrown hairs in my face as well.

I use this one. You can find them used on ebay extremely cheap (I picked up two for $10/ea with free shipping) and then go to a grocery store, mine had generous coupons on both the units and the blades. I keep one in the drawer and another for travel.

I have extremely sensitive skin, and this works much better compared to several other trimmers I used in the past. Just go slow, use very gentle pressure (think of the tomato example) and use the brush to clean the blade after every use to keep everything sharp.

Instead of outright shaving, use a trimmer and go gradually. Start with legs and arms or chest and just start with a barrier on the trimmer to a level 5 or whatever you feel comfortable with. This will help get some of the body hair gone, but also gives you a path to clear more off your body over time by shifting that trim barrier level shorter and shorter.

Another option entirely, again that I would recommend with a trimmer first that people won't notice is hair around your pubic area.

My husband's grandfather uses something like this. He is always clean shaven but he is a man with thin, sagging skin and shakey hands. He says it works well for him. Maybe your pop would enjoy using something like this.

My skin really dosen't like shaving either, and once I got to the point of shaving every day or looking like a bum I had to figure something out. I was always slicing myself or leaving skin irritation. I've been using this panasonic shaver for a couple years now and I think as good as it gets for me. The foils are very thin and it makes for a decent shave without all the abuse to your skin of dragging a blade over it. I usually shave dry after using a face wash to get all the oil and stuff off, but wet works too. I know it is expensive, but I am very happy I spent the money on it. I usually replace the foils about once a year, cost wise I think its cheaper than buying blades all the time anyway.

I bought a 760cc about a year and a half ago and I love it. It's the only shaving implement I've ever used that doesn't irritate the crap out of my skin.

Oh, and pay no mind to the people that whine about having to replace the cleaning fluid. You don't have to use it, but if you do the cartridges are only about $5 a piece on Amazon. I get about 2-2.5 months of use out of each one. In my opinion, the amount of time it saves me in the morning is well worth it (just throw it in the cradle and hit the giant button...done).

Definitely more expensive up-front, but you'll save in the long run.

Thanks for responding! The reason I ask is because when you pick up a GQ or Details or Men's Health, 99.9% of the products featured/recommended are men-specific, so I never really know.

So, I know you're looking for straight razors, but if it's a beard guy who's trimming and lining things up occasionally, like i do with my beard (non-bushy), I have the non-pro version of this and I frikin love it.

I have a beard anywhere from 2mm to 10mm depending on the season.

I use the Phillips one-blade razor system which I really do like, although the blades are also expensive. Then I use a traditional razor to get close to the neck as I've still not found any electric razor to get close for me.

I also recommend this conditioner I just started using. Billy Jealousy Beard Control Conditioner. And I'll alternate that with a beard oil.

My tip is to always trim your beard dry and give it a good brush before jumping in the shower.

I still have dry skin under my beard though on my cheeks and the corners of my upperlip that can get flakey. If anyone can recommend me something to help with that I've been unable.

On the annex kit list it says I will need a backpack. Can I use my sportsbag/dufflebag? (one with a strap and handle). I'll be using this to hold all my items while traveling.

For seasonal jacket, what qualifies? Rain jacket? For casual dress shoes I'm assuming sports shoes are ok.

Do you need to bring a razor with blades? Can you purchase this at the Canex? Would I be able to bring one of these? I haven't shaved without a electric razor in a while I'm assuming you can't bring one of those.
"Soap dish and toothbrush case (white)" where would I be able to purchase this?

In the wiki it says to bring your own Iron. Now that I'm looking at all the items were required to bring I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to fit all of this into my sportsbag/dufflebag. Should I be looking to purchase a bigger sports-bag so i'm able to bring all the required items?

Is there anything not on the list that you guys would recommend bringing? I asked my recruiting officer this and he said to bring a laptop so I don't get bored on the weekends. He also told me to bring snacks.

I'm not trans but I use this on my upper lip every couple of days and my partner uses it every day. It helps to gently exfoliate in the shower without irritating the skin (i.e. don't scrub until your skin hurts) and don't immediately put makeup on after shaving and use the least amount of products for cleansing the skin/removing makeup at night (I use bamboo washcloths and micellar water.) I have sensitive skin and haven't had any issues outside of the occasional zit/bump.

Make sure your facial skin is prepped. Steam/hot water will soften your skin and the follicles. I don't pull my skin while shaving. Shower right after. Tea tree oil to heal my face after, then a good facial moisturizer.

I find that my Phillips Norelco does a pretty good job, so long as I clean it out with a brush after ever other use and use a shaving gel.

Now they can be a little louder than your Philips but that's because they are more powerful.

This thing is fucking wonderful at cleaning up body hair pretty much anywhere you can reach. Also you have to try to cut yourself with it to do it. Works great and won't cut your nut sack. What more could you want? It won't make you feel like a prepubescent boy that completely lacks body hair like a razor can. It will leave stubble but I'll take that over the potential for razor burn.

Good question! I prefer electric as well. I don't have a travel one but I'd like to get one. I'll look around and am looking forward to other replies.

For "on the go" touch ups I would suggest a travel razor like this one. It has good reviews and I checked FakeSpot which gave the reviews an A. The one I use is an older model but this one is very similar and it's from the same brand. Honestly you can't go wrong with Philips Norelco for electric shavers in my opinion.

From someone who gets a 5 o'clock shadow by the end of rounds, I love my Philips Norelco rotary shaver. I use it every morning and it takes <2 minutes to get a good close shave.

It's not perfect, but at least I don't have to buy a new one at each location. Prefer a rechargeable one, but this was the best weight ratio I could find. Close enough shave that I can't complain too much, plus it seems to be the standard reddit answer.

It doesn't cut as close as a regular razor, but it still cuts pretty damn close. It also does very well for those 4 day weekends when you don't shave. You can clean it yourself pretty easily or buy the cleaning cartridges every few months. Really no complaints.

It also has a trimmer for the underparts.

I got the Panasonic ES-LA93-K about 8 months ago. I love it, easily the best shaver I have ever used. Only real complaint is that the cleaning mode is DAMN loud. Amazon appears to have the best price on it.

I don't know about Parkinson in particular, but the ES-LV65-S is the best electric shaver in the market, hands down.

They remove the harshness of blades and allow for smoother shaving regrowth and softer areas of applications. They turn blades fast that gently trap cut hairs. Depends how good a one you want. Seriously plucking individual hairs is horrible but the best way without laser

It's impossible to nick your skin with it, works great down under, no itching from it either and it works fast because u don't need to be careful, like with a real blade.

It is definitely the Philips Norelco OneBlade Face + Body. The attachments work like a charm. It's really fast and safe. There is basically no way to cut yourself unless you are extremely careless while shaving.

A foil shaver can get you pretty close. I use a Panasonic Arc4 and it does the job pretty well, and much harder to accidentally nick myself. It's water proof so I just use it in the shower every other day and keep myself fairly smooth.

I use this, I shave once a week roughly, I have a thick beard and it can deal with it no problem. Can't speak to the longevity of it thus far as it's new on the market, but it works great on any length hair and gets pretty damn close, I've had to charge it once so far and I shave once/week since Christmas.

I use a philips oneblade for close shaving (for my neck, edges) but it does have combs you can slap on it, but that can be a hassle.

So I use a philips trimmer with a knob that lets me change trim lengths on the fly (but you'd have to take a couple seconds to diassemble it to get a semi-close clean shave) because I use different lengths for the the moustache part the cheek part and the under the jaw part.

You're probably not gonna get tight enough with it. If you're gonna do electric, best to bring it down, throw some electric smooth (alcohol rub) on there and then finish it with this

That really depends on what type of shaver you are looking for. If you are looking for a beard/mustache trimmer, Braun Cruzer 6 Beard & Head Trimmer. If you are looking for a set of hair clippers, I would go with a Wahl Professional 8290.
If you are looking for a foil shaver, I would go with a Panasonic ES7035SC Triple Blade Pro-Curve Wet/Dry, or the Panasonic ES-SA40-K Pro Curve Wet/Dry Shaver If you are looking for a portable shaver for the gym or car, I like the Braun M90 Mobile Shaver. Someone suggested the iStubble from Conair. I would not get this, unless you want to replace the unit after 18 months or so. I have never had luck with Conair products, and I know no cosmetologists who recommend them either. I have actually asked them when I was looking for a set of clippers. The all said Wahl Professional, unless I wanted to spend some serious money.

Yup if you're going to use a foil shaver this is the one, when you go to a barbershop or salon this is what they will use for the bald portion of the bald fade/neck cleanup. Wife is a hairdresser at a unisex salon, and most of her coworkers have this shaver in their kit. As a side note though it wont cut if its more than stubble/short whiskers, so dont wait too long between shaves or you'll have to buzz it first then clean up with the Andis.

I have both this and the one already posted. This gets a much closer shave than the one posted earlier and is much smaller and easier to manuver down below.

Just make sure to use the guard or it'll cut you.

You may be pressing too hard with your traditional razor, you gotta just drag it along and let the blades do the work. And changing the blade every week-and-a-half if you shave once a day is a good habit. Even if the blades still look sharp, you're not seeing the myriad of tiny nicks and burrs that wear has left on them, and that's what tears your face up the most.

Used to shave with standard razor, much more time consuming and i tend to get ingrown hair or irritated hair follicle, occasionally). mentioned by OP, electric razor tend to be harsher on skin. So I spend money on good facial moisturizer (need to do that anyway to maintain good skin).

A "foil" shaver is probably the closest cutting electric shaver. Like this or this.

I can not promise baby smooth, no hair, no bumps, but there are two that I like. The Andis Profoil and the Wahl Five star shaver.

This is the one I use. I feel awkward because it is so loud - I keep thinking it sounds like a loud vibrator, and since I'm a woman everyone expects me to have a vibrator and no one expects me to have an electric shaver. All things considered though it is a good model and I wouldn't be willing to pay significantly more money for something quieter.

Have you checked out the Philips Norelco PQ208/40 Travel Electric Razor ($14.99 on Amazon)? It takes 2 AA batteries, weighs 5 ounces with batteries, and has a 4.5 star rating with 1,044 customer reviews. I find it works well in concert with the Wahl travel beard trimmer.

I own this one and will never sway from this brand. I have used the most popular brands for 15 or so years, but the Panasonic beats them all.

I picked one of these almost 5 years ago @ a drug store and damn thing won't die (I have the older model, this one looks better). It's a foil-style saver that's waterproof and takes 2 AAA batteries. It's best if you shave every day since it's awful for longer facial hair. That said, it's relatively compact, really durable, doesn't require oil/cream and gets the job done well enough while traveling. I have not had to do anything but replace the batteries and rinse it out every now and then since 2012.

I use the Andis shaver personally. They have two independent heads on them vs the Whal which has two as well but they move together and not independently.

So statistically speaking, it appears good...Might actually look at getting it myself, since I can barely handle 3 inch hair at 75 degrees without feeling hot. (I was shooting for hair down to my shoulders, Note to self: fuck that.)

This, Andis Profoil, the barbers use this. This gets a close enough shave for me that's much quicker than using a razor.

I keep one of these in my glove box and one in my desk drawer, just in case I forget to shave before PT in the morning, or if my face feels rough halfway through the day.

An electric could also be a solution for you. I use mine all the time and have had it for over a year at this point with no problems. I still default to a razor if I dont use the electric for a week or so (just like you would for your face).

A trimmer using moving blades that are smaller. Razor burn (typically) isn’t an issue. Also it’s MUCH harder to cut yourself of smooth skin. It also doesn’t require shaving cream.

That is IT. Don’t shave when your skin is wet / don’t use shaving cream. That gives you too close of a shave, thus leading to bumps. Always shave DRY.

I was a very severe case of bumps and the combo above has worked perfectly

Edit: with the second electric shaver, you can even shave over existing bumps and they won’t bleed. It gives you as close of a shave as a manual razor but it will not leave a rash. Don’t use it on your neck if that’s a problem area

I really enjoy the Philips OneBlade ($35). It's a relatively inexpensive rechargeable electric shaver that has given me the closest shave than any other electric shaver I've tried. It's not a skin close shave like you might get from a razor mind you, but it does the job well enough to keep up a professional appearance for me.

While normally razors leave my skin irritated, I recently tried Gillette SkinGuard ($10) and it surprisingly doesn't leaves me with almost zero irritation. I don't know if this applies or will help but the tip that has really cut down irritation for me when using a razor was to put less pressure on the skin, essentially having it just lightly glide across the skin.

I used to have a lot of issues with bumps/in grown hairs and was cutting my face daily. I'm a 30 year old grown ass man and nothing I did seemed to help. To make it worse I've always worked for SNCOs who cry about me not shaving twice a day.

Then I purchased a one blade. It has been an amazing switch. I 100% have to worry about it twice a day now as this is not actually a razor but it gets me close enough that no one complains.

I have had the same reaction to having bikini waxes. I expected less irritation than shaving and got more. I used to work at a spa that had a tea tree post wax oil that helped. I was also taught to "pre oil" to protect the skin, but that seemed to help more with pain than irritation. I would definitely use hard wax on coarse hair in a sensitive area.

If you're still not satisfied with waxing, I've found the least amount of irritation ever by using trimmers over coarse hair before a balding shaver. It gets the hair razor smooth and if you go back over it everyday you can keep it that way for a while.

I got the oneblade and found it to be a huge waste of money. Wish I got a refund but I wasn't able to send it back at the time.

There must be a ton of marketing and astroturfing behind it because those blades only lasted me a shave or 2 and the shaves themselves were of very poor quality.

The device is extremely cheaply made. The tip of mine where the blade attaches broke after only a few weeks.

After doing some real serious searching and ignoring the gimmicks, I got an Andi's Profoil trimmer, Wahl also makes a similar product. I use it for when I dont have time to wet shave, or if I'm not looking for a close shave.

They also make a T-bar trimmer which some people prefer for an almost-skin close trim.

Also, if you are looking for something to trim your privates with, get a norelco bodygroomer which was specifically made for that purpose. They also have ones you can double as bear trimmers with detachable lengths.
