Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Black Classic Gamecube Controller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O9GW8VK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xlstzb5FM9CV3

Also, you'll want one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Honbay-128MB-Memory-Compatible-Gamecube/dp/B011HMIVJ6/ref=pd_sim_63_20?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B011HMIVJ6&pd_rd_r=GJ44Z55TGX4ZPE9KWCE4&pd_rd_w=3u86I&pd_rd_wg=iYIzW&psc=1&refRID=GJ44Z55TGX4ZPE9KWCE4

Do your research though, some won't work properly.

Games (in no particular order):

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Metroid Prime, 1 and 2 (recommend playing prime 1 first, prime 2 is Nintendo hard at times. Also IMO Prime 1 is better for popping your cherry between the two. There is a third game for the Wii and the first two games were ported to the Wii with updated graphics and controls, in case you would prefer to play the Wii version. Def play Prime 1 first however)

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (pick one and play the other if you like it. Also TP was ported to Wii with motion controls, and the whole game was mirrored to accommodate for that. IMO the 'cube version is better. That said, Nintendo tried for a more realistic stylization and thus it hasn't aged nearly as well as WW)

Starfox Adventures (if you liked the Zelda games, def check this one out)

Starfox Assault (absolutely nothing like Starfox Adventures. But a good game nonetheless)

F-Zero GX

Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't bother with Monkey Ball 1, Monkey Ball 2 is just straight-up superior in every way)

Super Mario Sunshine (This classic has aged like fine wine. Graphics were good back then and still hold up today, thanks to its stylization)

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (if you are only going to play one game make it this one. Absolutely fantastic unique and creative game, everything about it is perfect; years later and nostalgia still hits HARD for this one, so many memorable moments)

SSX Tricky, SSX 3, SSX On-Tour. (Pick one and play the others if you like it, they all have their own charm. Tricky is arcadey but entertaining. 3 has a more serious tone to it)

Timesplitters Future Perfect

Luigi's Mansion (it's the Ghostbusters game we didn't ask for but oh so desperately needed)

Resident Evil 4 (this game got ported to the Wii with extra content and with Wii controls. I can't speak to it's quality but you should consider looking at both versions)

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Viewtiful Joe

Soul Calibur II

Pikmin 1 and 2

Beyond Good and Evil

Kirby Air Ride

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness/Pokemon Colosseum (Pick one and play the other if you like it. These are sort of a 3D proper Pokemon game. Not quite but close enough)

Chibi Robo (Never actually played it myself but it has a very loyal fanbase)

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (probably the only superb 3D Sonic game ever imo. Feel free to call me out on it if I'm wrong)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (back when movie-games were good)

Honorable mentions:

Geist (a unique FPS only held back by it's lackluster writing and production quality)

Mario Party 5 (not a huge fan of the series myself but a lot of people like them. Wii games are prolly better tho tbh)

Animal Crossing (the Wii version is so much better)

SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom/The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game (BBB IMO is much much better but the movie game wasn't terrible and features very similar gameplay)

Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures (fantastic game but you really need to play it with friends... Which necessitates at minimum 2 GBA's/SPs and 2 GBA-NGC adapters and optimally 4 of each)

P.N.03 (good luck finding this one. Best description I have for it is that it is a Bayonetta shooter game on the gamecube)

The Sims

Lego Star Wars games (really should play it with a friend)

Need for Speed Most Wanted

Mario Golf

Super Mario Strikers

Mario Superstar Baseball

Timesplitters 2 (IMO Future Perfect is better but this one is worth checking out)

Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 3/4 (Never actually played but I'm a huge fan of THPS2 on the N64 so I imagine these newer ones are also good)

Wario World (Sort of a hidden gem. Like a 3d Warioland. IMO the Warioland games are better but this is worth looking at)

Other games as well but this is the cream of the crop IMO and they all exemplify what made the 'cube such a great console. I'm sure there are fantastic games that I missed, of course explore everyone else's comments as well :-)

Congrats on the decision to play some GameCube games. You are in for a treat.

Hello! I have been researching this a lot lately so, to answer your question fully, I think it comes down to three things: what is your price range, what platform is your friend using, and how handy are you? I'm sure there are more knowledgable people who will chime in but I feel like after pouring through a lot of posts on this sub I can give some fairly standard advice.

The most affordable and device agnostic solution (without getting a cheap "plastic pad") is the "DDR Energy 1 inch foam deluxe pad" from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Dance-Revolution-Energy-Deluxe-Playstation-2/dp/B000GHG0BA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467232923&sr=8-1&keywords=ddr+pad). I own two of these: truth be told I have some issues with ghost steps on one pad and while the other so far is holding up, I just purchased it and I am not convinced it is 100% just yet. You'll see conflicting reviews online about these, particularly the metal pads, but these foam pads are recommended commonly. This is around $60 bucks, has a nice stable foam insert, and can work on multiple platforms (PC and PS2 probably being the most common). While my personal experience might not seem like a glowing review, I would still recommend this pad. In my opinion this is your safest bet.

If you are wary about the quality of the DDR Energy pad, can afford a little more, and your friend plays on PC, consider this pad (http://dancepadmania.com/product/dance_pads/deluxe-dance-pad/). While I have not personally used it, I have seen multiple people on here recommending it over the similar DDR energy pad. Comes in at around $85.

If you are handy and want to make an extra special gift, your next option (in terms of price) would be to construct your own metal pad. This is the route I am currently investigating as my next step up- this thread has information on the construction process (https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/viewthread.php?threadid=3350). I see many people using Riptide's guide as a starting point and there are video tutorials of the whole process on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aE88SHLHwU). From my research, I think this would set you back somewhere between $100-$150 + your time to construct it.

If you are not handy, but money is no option and you want the best of the best, you'd be hard pressed to find something better than an OmegaGX from precision dance pads (http://www.precisiondancepads.com/index.php?id_product=8&controller=product&id_lang=1). This can also be customized as well to make the gift extra special, but you're looking at spending around $350. This is considered the premiere home dance pad solution - at this point the only step up would be purchasing an actual machine or modifying arcade dance pads for use on PC.

Hope this helps :D!

I'm probably just echoing what everyone else said, but here we go.

Fox is technically the best character in the game, but I wouldn't recommend him for a beginner personally. The tier list assumes that all players play as perfectly as possible, and the things that make Fox good require you to press a lot of buttons very quickly at very specific timings, which is more difficult for newer players. To find out which character (I'd recommend just one to start) you want to main, I'd recommend watching some professionals play matches and see if any of them catch your eye. The easiest characters for beginners to pick up are probably Marth or Sheik, but the most important thing by FAR is to main the character YOU want to main. If you want to main Fox, do it! If you find that you really have your heart set on Kirby, don't let anyone stop you! Hell, I'm from Minnesota, and our 3rd ranked player is a Kirby main. You have to play with whoever YOU find the most fun to play with, otherwise practicing won't be fun, and you'll never get anywhere.

Oh, and get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. They're practically designed for Smash Bros, and they're the only controllers you'll be able to use in tournaments if you decide to go to any in the future. Don't get a cheap knock-off either, they're not nearly as good and they break easily. Get this one, or a different color of this one. It's by far the best for a beginner. If you happen to get really into Melee, you might want to get one of the older editions of the GC controllers, as they're considered to be slightly better, but they're way more expensive. If you're using Dolphin, you'll also need an adapter. It might be a little annoying to get set up, but Dolphin Emulator's site has troubleshooting for every possible issue.

Welcome to the community!

TL;DR Play whoever you want but I'd personally recommend not Fox for a beginner, Marth or Sheik would be "easiest". Get a real GC controller and an adapter to use on Dolphin.

u/NintenDubs · 5 pointsr/DanceDanceRevolution

You could try something like this? A friend of mine used to have a similar foam pad - and reviews on this one look /mostly/ good and it's within your price range. This is USB so it should work on a 360; though I don't think it'd work on the Wii - but it might? This SHOULD work for PC as well! Which is what I'd recommend.

Keep in mind - ANY foam pad or less tier pad won't exactly allow you to pass some of the harder songs. So if you have some hardcore DDR players in your club they will likely laugh at these. I'm just being honest. However if you're just trying to play for fun - these would be fine!

In terms of which version of the game to get - never played Dance Dance Revolution Universe or DDR Universe 2 but scrolling through those song lists they seem to have a decent selection I guess. That would be your best bet if you chose the Xbox 360 as your choice of system. Also the easiest solution. Both of those games could probably be found at a local used game store or dare I say... Gamestop... Or even Ebay.

If you can find a spare computer (literally can run on just about anything) you could get a free piece of software called Stepmania. It only comes with a few songs when you first download it... but you can get more songs various ways. This would allow you to hand pick exactly which songs you'd like but also would be a bit more setup. Here's an ok article breaking down some controls and stuff.

I hope this helps!

u/TimeTravellerSmith · 9 pointsr/3DS

Background...my last handheld was a Gameboy Color. I have no experience with anything after the original DS. I've been completely out of the loop on the last decade of Nintendo handheld development, so I apologize in advance.

First:

So I'm in the market for a 3DS or an 3DS XL and was just curious if there was a major advantage between the two. I see that the XL has way better battery life and is obviously bigger. Is that it? I'd get a cheaper DS, but it seems like I wouldn't be able to play newer games like Pokemon X/Y.

Second:

I'm worried about that battery life on the XL as it is (quoted at 6.5 hours max) is this your experience as well for playing games on playable brightness and other battery saving options? What do you guys usually get when playing straight from charge to death?

Third:

I'm looking at portable charging options and I see that you can buy a USB cable and would really be interesting in buying a USB battery pack like this. So, would a solution like that work fine? I'm just concerned about getting voltages and amps correct because I know that can be an issue for certain things (I've known people to burn out their phones by using the wrong charger).

Fourth:

Would I be able to play ROMs? For example, would I be able to load up some of the original Pokemon games and play them on a 3DS? Would I have to "jailbreak" it or is it just not possible?

Lastly, any suggestions on good games? Right now I'm looking at Pokemon X/Y/Older, and Fire Emblem. I like some turn base strategy and RPG's but would be open to other suggestions of good games that people seem to like, but might slip though a "sort by popular" search on Amazon.

Thanks for all the help. Sorry for being the noob'est of noobs on the noob question thread.

u/drfoqui · 2 pointsr/Borderlands

I think you should at least give it a shot. As much as it can be frustrating because you don't have control over what other people do and they may take loot you want, etc., the game is also designed to be played in coop so there are a lot of cool things you will not experience if you only play solo, mainly in terms of the interactions and synergies between the different Vault Hunters' skills.

Like I said in a response below, the best way to do it is with friends but if that's not possible, be patient and consistently stay away from people who play like assholes (leave the game or kick them out of yours) and add nice people to your friend list in order to keep playing with them in the future. This has resulted in a lot of really satisfactory gameplay for me in BL2. Also, this subreddit can be a good resource to find cool people to play with.

Finally, as much as many people are ok with playing with you if you don't have a mic, it is something that really enhances the experience so maybe you could consider investing in one. You don't need to spend $100, there are more budget friendly options like this one or this one that some people will hate on but they work perfectly fine if you adjust your expectations to the amount of money you're spending and they will last if you treat them with care. Even this is an interesting option if you're on Xbox and I'm sure there's similar alternatives for other systems.

u/Talutha · 2 pointsr/skyrimmods

Getting the touchpad to work with Skyrim is actually really easy. You can use http://www.DS4Windows.com to remap the touchpad to various keyboard inputs. Then I used this mod to change the button mapping to where all of my favorites are on the Dpad with the left bumper as a modifier so you get all 8 favorites accessable. After that, you follow the direction on the mod you linked to allow the keyboard and controller to be usable at the same time. You can't use both mods at the same time because they both edit the same file so you'll need to take the first mod and edit its file with the directions on the second mods page.

What I ended up with is all 8 favorites on the Dpad and I bound the various swipes/actions on the touchpad to keyboard commands.

  • Swipe Up - Perks
  • Swipe Down - Map
  • Swipe Left - Magic
  • Swipe Right - Inventory
  • Left side press - Realistic Needs and Disease status
  • Right Side Press - Frostfall menu
  • Top Press - Weathersense
  • Two finger press - Quicksave(I use this mod for better quick saves)

After that, I set DS4Windows to use the PS button as a modifier key adding even more buttons to the controller.

  • Swipe Up - Drink from streams
  • Swipe Down - Turn Wearable Lanterns on/off
  • Swipe Left - Skyrim Tycoon Influence
  • Swipe Right - Skyrim Tycoon Supply
  • Left Press - Wearable Lantern Fuel
  • X - ENB Screenshot
  • Square - Uses a macro to open console, Toggle the menus and free cam
  • Triangle - Same as square but pauses the game world with TFC 1
  • Circle - Turns my ENB on and off.

Works perfectly! The only thing you really have to do is when you are rebinding keys in the DS4Windows program is make sure that the 'Scan Code' box is checked otherwise they don't work in the game for some reason. Also, when you are binding keyboard keys ingame to various mods, your controller still has to be off otherwise the game doesn't pick them up.

The versatility of the touchpad alone makes the DS4 hands down waaaaay better than the XB1 controller. The only thing I'm missing now is a mod to change all the buttons in SkyUI to the PS4 buttons. The mod on the workshop unfortunately doesn't work anymore. That or a mod for the controller itself to change the buttons to Xbox buttons since I don't use my PS4 all that much.

Also, I suggest modding your PS4 controller to use Xbox One thumbsticks. They are by far superior and it is actually really easy to do. Both controllers get their thumbsticks from the same manufacturer so they are interchangeable. Here are the thumbsticks I bought off Amazon. And here is a really awesome video showing you how easy it is to do.

Good luck buddy! If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do what I can to help!

Hey bud,

I, personally, find Shulk to be a tough character to learn. I think you'd benefit from trying out different characters; after all, it's always the same button combinations -- that's the beauty of smash.

Shulk is a slower character; I'd recommend learning with a medium speed character for all around damage and maneuverability. This game is about positioning and predicting the enemy; having a bulky character means you're constantly struggling with your own mobility rather than having time to think about positioning. Once you get a better understanding of the game, you would switch back to Shulk and have a deeper appreciation for his attack power.

Some good examples of medium-speed include Lucina, Mario, Zelda, Falco. They're really well rounded characters. My personal favorites in the game are Fox, Rosalina&Luma, Toon Link, Peach, Charizard, and Lucina; it goes to show that all weight-classes are viable and fun in their own regard. Since you already know the Counter ability, Lucina/Marth would be a decent place to start.

While some say it takes the joy out of it, the best way to get better is playing 1v1, no items, and a basic stage like Final Destination or Battlefield. It cuts out all the random things that happen.

Playing against a single computer and ramping up the difficulty is a good way to learn. You can mirror match, to see how a level 9 computer does certain moves/combos. Maybe you'll see them do something you don't already know, and you can try to mimic it, like "teching." From here, you can figure out which moves have a slower recovery (i.e. every time you use this one ability, you get hit... better not use that ability unless you know you can hit him with it). In time, playing against the same person/computer will improve your game.

As for controls, I know many friends that learned the Smash during Brawl, and play the game just fine using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck; in the end it's about personal preference and how you learned the game. Ideally, a GameCube controller has the perfect layout. To cut your expenses, you should be able to get (http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Battle-Mario-Version-Turbo-u/dp/B00ND0E5ZU) for around $25 if you scope it out, which plugs into a Wii remote and is wired as a Classic Controller. If you don't, the GamePad layout is fine.

Finally, if 1v1, no-items, final destination just isn't fun for you, forget about it! Play to have fun, not to memorize combos. I spent 2-3 hours today with my brother learning Captain Falcon, laughing at trying to hit one-another with his side-air knee attack. Anytime I learned anything new about the character, he'd mimic it and vice versa until we just got better with the character as a whole.

u/RDDanna · 7 pointsr/SSBM

if you want to play on your computer, I'll recommend the most recent dolphin netplay build, that and complete instructions can be found here.

Of course, you will need a ROM of melee which you should definitely obtain legally and not through a download of it somewhere on the internet.

You will need a controller. I recommend looking at your nearest thrift store, or joining the facebook group for your local melee scene and asking if anyone would be willing to sell one to you. Or you can buy a new smash 4 controller.. Also you'll need an adapter to play on your computer, the mayflash 4 port is the best and cheapest option, but if you already have a wii u with gamecube adapter you can make that work too. Either way follow this guide to set it up. (make sure it's on wii u mode if you end up with the mayflash adapter)

All this being said, this is not the best way to play melee. The best way will always be to play on a wii or gamecube with a CRT TV (long story short, they have way less lag than HD TVs). If you really end up getting into melee you'll end up going this route eventually anyways, so for that I'd recomend agin your local scene for a gamecube/wii and a copy of melee, though copys of melee can be a bit expensive. For a CRT, check craigslist in your area, or just like streetcorners, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. Worst case, your local thrift store will probably only overcharge you a little for a decent CRT.

If you don't want to deal with buying a copy of melee. Then you can mod your wii to play a rom of melee. I recommend the 20xx hack pack that is made for melee training. It has a bunch of stuff you can learn to use, but you can also just play regular games on it, so it's good for everything outside of serious tournament use. Here's the official step by step guide for getting 20xx onto your wii.

Outside of that I think your best option is to see if there's any smash fests or tournaments going on around you and just go, hang out with people and play as much as you can.

Also, just some friendly advice, as great of a resource this reddit, or smashboards, or people in general can be, not everything everyone says is accurate, so do your research.

Have fun, and welcome!

PS, no hate for CS:GO from me. Plus I don't think you'll find too much hate for it here in general since mango plays it.

EDIT: I forgt my biggest piece of advice for new players. Spacing is as important, if not more important than tech skill. Make sure you're movement has a purpose. Good luck Dude/Dudette

u/CrackersAndMilk · 1 pointr/arma

Yes. The best solution is a high-framerate camera (PS3Eye, does not need to be high resolution) with the IR filter removed (though honestly high-framerate is not required, but the PS3Eye is just super cheap), and making your own 3-point IR-LED or reflector clip, usually done cheapest with a baseball cap (so, buying 3 IR-LEDs either connected via battery power supply, or building a USB one (though this has strict voltage), and attaching them to 3 static points on the hat, or building something to attach them to your headset), then use a program like Freetrack or Opentrack (Opentrack is my fav) which already have software built for tracking those 3 points and translating it to movement in ARMA.
It's just as good as the TrackIR system, but way cheaper if you buy and build it all yourself.. Just takes a bit of setup time and a bit of work. There are good guides online, however, so as long as you can buy the parts and follow the guide you want to follow, you can build a setup very easily.

Or if you're both really lazy and frugal, you can go with someone like these guys who pretty much do all the work for you with removing the IR filter off of PS3Eye camera, plus 3d-printing a pretty nice clip for the LEDs. They also have a modified version of opentrack to work specifically with their builds, though I'm not sure what's different about it. Still ends up being a lot cheaper than the TrackIR that does the same thing, but I would still recommend building your own if you're up for it. It's really not a hard process at all.

It works stupidly well, and makes things like flying and landing choppers and planes 100x less risky. You get a whole lot less blind spots. It's also pretty neat to be able to keep your crosshairs at one target, while looking in a different direction to watch another target.

u/reticentbias · 2 pointsr/gaming

FF tactics is a great one, though it's far inferior to the PSX version.

I can also whole-heartedly recommend Golden Sun, though it's not as deep of an RPG, it's extremely fun. Etrian Odyssey is as hardcore as they come, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You actually explore and draw your own dungeon maps in it, and the class combinations are nuts.

If you aren't a big fan of JRPGs, you probably won't like The World Ends With You but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you skipped it.

There's also Chrono Trigger, which, if you never played it, deserves a chance to be seen. It is definitely an old school JRPG though.

FF3 and FF4 are both great if you like that kind of thing, but if you're not into JRPGs, again, you probably won't enjoy them.

I really loved the most recent Dragon Quest, even though it is decidedly old school and very much a JRPG in the traditional format. But it does a lot of things well, and the class system is deep and rewarding.

Bioware made a Sonic RPG, though I haven't played it so I can't recommend it.

The Castlevania games are all awesome, but they're RPGs like Diablo is an RPG.

u/pansensuppe · 10 pointsr/PS4

While the Xbox One controller is a great evolution to the 360 controller, the PS4 controller is a real revolution if you compare it with the DS3. It feels so great in your hand. The size is perfect and the buttons and the D-Pad are by far the best compared to any other controller. The new surface feels really good, especially with sweaty hands like mine. Even the triggers are now better than the ones on the Xbox One controller (despite the nice rumble feature).

There is only one thing where the Xbox One controller is still superior and that are those great new thumbsticks with the slip-proof rim. But guess what... you can replace the PS4 with those original X1 sticks pretty easily http://www.amazon.com/Original-XBOX-ONE-Controller-analogue-Thumbsticks/dp/B00IZSTNKW or even get some fancy 3rd party plastic or metal sticks in any color http://www.gadgettidings.com/product/custom-metal-dark-grey-thumbsticks-analogue-thumb-sticks-for-sony-dual-shock-4-ps4-controllers/ for a couple bucks to create the ultimate controller: DS4 with X1-sticks!

u/Efriim · 2 pointsr/RetroPie

I haven't used any handheld pi. I guess there are some good alternatives though.

NDS with charger. $25 - $40 (I would get the DSi) (DSlite bumpers and things tend to wearout)

A flash cart for NDS. $15 - $20 (DSTT I hear is best) (Acekard2i is great) (R4 is hard to tell the model) (DSTWO flashcart drains battery life, is overpriced, but has built in cpu and emulators for gba snes and genesis) All are compatible with 3ds, NDS, DSi.

MicroSD. $10. Samsung EVO 32gb on amazon is a good deal

The DS has a lot of great games, snes and genesis emulators work okay but not the best. GBA emulation only works with dstwo or ez-flash.

Total $50 - $70.

PSVITA w/ charger $110 - $150. Never used one, cfw is available for firmware up to 3.68. The firmware 3.69 is not hackable.

Vita Memory Card + microsd $20. Since the proprietary memory card are so expensive.

PSVITA & TV are cfw compatible up to 3.67 - 3.68, however there may be some homebrew incompatibility on these firmwares. 3.69 is not compatible yet. CFW can load PSP homebrew as well as play PS1.

Total $130 - $170

The consoles and handhelds fluctuate in price. PSvita TV was low as $40 at one time, they are a bit inflated right now but collectors items will hold value. Finding one second hand or used for half-price is probable a used PSP is easy to find for $40 but not online.

I have to agree with Loco_ohno on this. I bought the power grip from Amazon mainly for the extended battery, but the grip is actually very comfortable. I am able to play until the battery dies with little to no issue. Ordering through Amazon was great as it is a Prime item and mine was brand new. I really hope that option helps. Plus Nyko, even being a third party device, is a fantastic company with great products.

Welcome!

As most here will tell you, the wiki does a pretty bang up job of answering most of your questions as far as game recommendations goes. You can find it here.

The best games for the platform will all depend on personal preference, but a solid base is always the Vita's stellar exclusives. Gravity Rush, Persona 4 Golden, Danganronpa and most recently Severed are all notable titles you might want to check out.

Battery life on my Slim is pretty good, and you can squeeze more out of it if you turn off WiFi when you're not using it. There are also third party grip cases with built in batteries that can boost the battery life even further, and make the console even more comfortable to hold.

Multiplayer servers will be on a game by game basis, but I think they should all be up and running. You might just run into problems with games where their respective audience have moved onto greener pastures.

I hope this was helpful, and I hope you enjoy your Vita if you take the plunge! :D

If you were a virgin on both consoles, I would say 3DS just for simplicity sake; but since you already own a 3DS, I think the wii is a good choice.

Just like Dominic4523 said, make sure it is one of the backwards compatible models if you plan to play gamecube games.

Also, you need to know that you will need a lot of stuff to fully enjoy what the wii has to offer.

You need a wiimote + nunchuck for most wii games. Some will only need the wiimote, but most will need you to have both, for every player too.

If you plan to play gamecube games, you'll need a gamecube controller and a gamecube memory card to save your progress. Those games are not playable with the wiimote.

Last, if you plan to get virtual console games, you'll need a classic controller model 1 or model 2; and also, the wii shop channel will not be selling points starting next Monday March 26th, so you'll have to check the store asap for potential purchases.

If after knowing all that you still want a wii, go for it, but it is definitely way easier to just got a new 3DS.

If you are in the United States, your best bet for a Pro Controller will be from Amazon:

I have one and it is fantastic, especially for Mario Krt 8.

Wii U Games you should consider getting that are out now:

Pretty much any starter kit is just cheap crap. I'd advise you to just spend a little extra and buy quality.

Styli. Basically the only spare bulk pack available at the moment, hence the long shipping wait.

Car charger I would instead buy either a portable power bank and 3DS USB cable or a USB car charger like this and a 3DS USB cable. A power bank would be a good bit more expensive but is really nice to have if you have a lot of electronics you bring with you. Here's a pretty good one.

Great card case holder.

Budget but good carrying cases: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Yes, its more expensive to go this route. But I promise you that you will be happy you did. I bought those crappy starter kits for my GBC, GBA, and DS. The stuff was low quality and generally just doesn't last. I bought stuff for my 3DS similar to what I've linked here and have been much happier with the quality and make

u/devinup · 2 pointsr/DanceDanceRevolution

Hmm. I see what you mean. I really don't know about the differences. There's a description of each one, but I would assume that each version has a couple little updates/improvements over previous versions, so with Version 4 being cheaper than 3 at the moment, I'd say that's the one to get, although I don't know if the changes really make it any better than Version 2. I also haven't ordered from their website, so I can't really vouch for that. This is the pad I got: http://www.amazon.com/PS2-Energy-Foam-Deluxe-Dance-Playstation/dp/B000GHG0BA/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1425832275&sr=8-9&keywords=ddrgame+pad

I hope Amazon links are okay around here. Anyways, I'd really recommend a more expensive pad if you're serious about playing a lot. My pad worked great for about a year of light use, and then one of the arrows started either not responding to input or being stuck as "down" even when I wasn't standing on it. If they were like $20, I wouldn't care, but they're a little expensive to just stop working well after some time.

After it stopped working, I got one of the OmegaGX pads, and it's been great. Very responsive and comfortable to use.

Nintendo Wii U Pro

  • Pro: Connect (4 or more, but not sure why you'd ever need more) via Bluetooth without additional drivers, menus, tricks, special guides or hacks. Pair and play.
  • Pro: Seemingly infinite battery life (I'm not kidding, I haven't charged mine in weeks).
  • Pro: Magnificent d-pad construction and feel.
  • Pro: Button response and layout.
  • Neutral: Price is around $40 and these controllers are discontinued
  • Con: Size - it's a bit beefy (larger than an Xbox One or PS4 controller)
  • Con: Piano finish - don't toss these into a backpack without covering it

If you're super lucky, and near a Walmart (in the US), most stores have these on clearance for $12. If you can't find one, it's worth every penny. These controllers are discontinued and will be only going up in price. Search your zipcode here

Note: The Switch Pro is just as glorious and actually feels better in your hand. It's a bit smaller too and will work with any Xbox One / PS4 controller case. Unfortunately, at $70, I just can't recommend the controller unless it pulls double-duty with the RetroPie and Nintendo Switch.

Edit: After further testing with the Switch Pro, there's a few bugs involving the left stick. It works fine upon first pairing, anytime after ... not so great.
u/andraes · 1 pointr/wiiu

It's not quite a pro controller, but for me it's been just as good. I got the Mario branded Hori Battle pad, and I have really loved it. It's perfect for Mario Kart, and the second best thing for Smash (only the original GC controllers are better imo). I play pretty much everything with it except when motion controls are needed, then I just use the gamepad.

I am a paraplegic and get the exact same pain with handhelds. Grips have been a lifesaver! I tried skull & co.'s kickstarter grip and a cheap rubber one off Amazon before sticking with Satisfye's Switch grip. I have big hands and it was the only one large enough to comfortably play with. Edit: They JUST launched all new products but I have their OG Switch grip.

I have other branded grips for my N3DS XL and Vita, but forget what they are (I think they're Japanese brands I found on Amazon), and they're comfortable and work great.

I suggest buying a handful off Amazon to try out and then keep the one that works. They're all made slightly differently so you wont really know until you have them in your "grip" :-) .

Good luck!

Edit: I found the exact grips in my Amazon purchase history (all from Amazon and I live in the states).

Here is the switcher that I use. My tv has s video input so it works great because I can use systems that output s video or composite with this one. Here is an s video cable that would work for both your SNES and your N64. Here is a composite cable that would work with your model 1 Sega Genesis, and Here would be am example of composite cables that would work with you NES.

As for the surge protector, here is the one I use and I really like it because it can hold a lot of the big power bricks that these older consoles like to use. Anyway hope that helped point you in the right direction. Of course it is a little bit of an investment, but overall I bet you will be much happier with a set up like this. I know personally I could never go back to constantly physically switching consoles out when I want to play them, this makes it so much easier to enjoy all my consoles with minimal effort. Good luck on your set up!

Damn, something I want. Well, the things I want the most at this moment are definitely not reasonable in value (eg: a few hundred dollars, damn consoles), so I guess I link one of the things I'd really love that falls into semi-reasonable levels:

This
because I'm trying to complete my Epic Collection set and the older sets (including this one) are getting hard to find.

If I'm dreaming big, a giftcard towards saving for this would be amazing!

As for the gift two . . . C'mon...gimmie.

Anyways, I wish the best of luck to everybody. I've heard so many good things about the both of you in just the few days that I've been here. Whoever wins will be really lucky people.

I just bought the xbone thumb sticks and installed them on my DS4. This was the best decision ever! At first I was skeptical but all the people over at r/ps4mods highly recommended it! Just be sure to watch a few how to install videos and then you'll be golden. I bought these ...

They fit perfectly and if you have ever used a xbone controller you know they have wonderful grip. Good luck bud!

Unless you are already playing harder standard or heavy songs and want to achieve high scores, I would suggest getting a simple, less expensive mat to get started.

I haven't personally used the D-force pads, which can be found on Amazon, but I've heard good things! If you are willing to spend the ~$90 the foam pads offer some support for your legs compared to pads w/o foam. And from my experiences playing on carpet, foam pads slide less than pads w/o. The plain dance mats ($50) without padding are still fine for beginners, but may slide more and will give less cushion, especially on hardwood.

This is the foam pad I have currently ($57). It works very well despite some "ghosting" of the down button which can occasionally cause errors. But I'm not too concerned with getting perfect combos on my home machine. There are some cheaper dance mats out there on amazon, but quality can be questionable, so always check reviews before you purchase! And make sure it has a USB if you want to play with Stepmania.

If you decide to stick with the hobby and want to maximize your scores, only then would I suggest shelling out money for a hard mat or the effort of hardmodding. Have fun!

u/Sirotaca · 11 pointsr/speedrun

GameCube and Game Boy Player is the standard setup. The startup disc for the Game Boy Player can be a bit pricey these days, but you can softmod the GameCube and use the free Game Boy Interface software as an alternative.

From there, you can get an HDMI adapter and HDMI capture card (lots of those to choose from). Or if you need to save some money, a good S-Video capture device like the IO Data GV-USB2, an S-Video splitter, and a GameCube S-Video cable will still get you a pretty decent-looking capture. Either way, set it up in OBS and you're good to go.

I'd suggest also getting an SNES controller adapter. I find it way nicer than using the GBA as a controller. There's also one for Wii Classic Controllers if you prefer.

u/CoryBoehm · 7 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Some recommended Switch accessories:

  • A tempered glass screen protector such as ORLZY, Spigen or AMFilm. All are excellent only reason AMFilm gets more recommendations as it was first to market.

  • A protective case like Hori Tough Pouch

  • Hori LAN Adapter if you play online lots as the Switch has very weak WiFi service. Also other lan adapters may work but only the Hori one is officially supported.

  • Hori Play Stand if you frequently play in table top mode or need to charge while in table top mode.

  • Pro Controller

  • The [Google Pixel USB C-C charger] (https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_18w_power_adapter) as it is easy to find locally, even on sale, and more compact than the Nintendo one but it won't power the dock.

  • Nintendo A-C cable (comes with the Pro Controller)

  • Your choice of headphones

  • A larger bag such as Butterfox Carry All case to hold your EDC (every day carry).

  • PowerA Cartridge Cases if you need extra game storage on the go (comes in several designs).

  • RAVPower 26800 PD a battery pack with both Type C in and out such as this one. Type C is means quicker charging and Type C out to safely power the Switch while using it.

  • PowerA Hybrid Cover might also be of interest to some people. I have not used it though as it is not my style. There are a few different colour/designs.

You should consider getting a grip! Two grips that might be good options:

The Nyko Power Grip is very comfortable and it has a battery in it that can double your Vita's battery life. I don't have one myself, but I've heard amazing things about it. Only caveat is it seems some of their batteries are poorly made so some unlucky people end up getting batteries that either don't work at all or stop working within a month. But it's supposedly really comfortable either way. It might be a bit bulky and take up a lot of space though. Hopefully other users can weigh in on it.

L2/R2 Grip is the one I use. I find it really comfortable, and I love that it comes with extra L2/R2 buttons. It might be an unnecessary luxury, depending on the games you play. It's been super helpful for me though, especially for ps1 ports that require the l2/r2 buttons. Megaman Legends is a game that used the l2/r2 buttons, and the vita port gets around this by mapping those buttons to the rear touch pad. It was a pain in the ass for me to reach around and hit those precise spots, but with this grip, it's no longer a problem.

u/tekdude · 3 pointsr/truegaming

Keep it and just buy the extras.

Adapters are fairly inexpensive at around $5-$6 shipped on Amazon.
Example: http://www.amazon.com/Gen-USB-Charge-Cable-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B0024ZT3XO/

I guarantee Majora's Mask 3D will be on sale again soon (Newegg had a promo that dropped it down to $33, since expired). It'll likely be Amazon or a department store like Target/Walmart but it will be on sale again, I'm sure.

Trust me. Keep it and you'll be happy you did. And if, for whatever reason, you decide you don't want it, I'm sure you can resell later at a similar value (if not higher). It's win win.

u/Dochartaigh · 2 pointsr/crtgaming

There's a S-Video input right on the back of that monitor. One side plugs directly into your console, the other into the monitor itself - super simple:

PS1/PS2/PS3 (official Sony brand and excellent quality, FYI)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N5JS5A/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

SNES:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LE3EAIK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For NES, you'll also want to get a pack of these BNC to RCA connectors to use a regular RCA Composite cable off your NES: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005B4O4GG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I should add that I forgot to mention that Sega Genesis needs to be modded for S-Video - if your friend can help you mod the monitor for RGB it'll be a breeze for him (it's soldering like 5 single wires and a couple resistors - pretty darn easy). ---OR at that point, if you are actually modding the monitor for RGB, you'll probably forget about the S-Video and just use a regular SCART RGB cable or whatnot.

Also, if it makes your choice easier, S-Video really is excellent quality. You really have to see both side-by-side to notice any difference compared to RGB (especially if you're still new to all this - it's really just the finer smaller differences you can notice between the two connection types).

u/DJBlueJay · 4 pointsr/smashbros

If you require a Gamecube controller soon, and do not already have an adapter, I highly recommend the HORI HORI Battle Pad Turbo. It includes a turbo function, ZL and ZR buttons, as well has a Home button and -/+ buttons. The triggers are different from the regular one, but they are still great. It feels the exact same to hold as a regular GCC. They instead hook up to a Wiimote, and are wireless through that. I almost never tell people to buy third party controllers, but for this scenario, I think they are very amazing for only $25.

They are not hard to find at retailers, but for online they appear to be the second best thing, so get them quick, they are running out fast.

(Also comes in Luigi Version)

u/Nixflyn · 1 pointr/buildapc

I know the Zalman clip-on mic is a common recommendation, but please don't buy one, your friends will thank you. The Zalman picks up way too much background noise. Instead, get a PS Eye. It's $10, you won't need to have another cable attached to your face, the mic quality is excellent, and it's small enough to fit under most monitors. The camera is just an added bonus.

u/Grimij · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

I've been itching for some headtracking solution lately, too.

Many are saying the eventual FoIP, which will probably be fine apart from the cost of the webcam, though you can do facetracking now (not to be confused with FoIP) with a relatively cheap 120fps Playstation 3 Eye paired with something like FaceTrackNoIR that will likely work as well as it will, but may not be as easy to setup depending on how well it's going to be integrated. Using standard webcams also work, but not that well. Same issue regarding webcam framerate with using markers and IRtrackers.

And then there's Eyetrackers like Tobii, which is incredibly slick and easy to setup, only drawback is being centered in front of the capture bar as well as it being kinda' pricey.

Though what I'm really drawn to right now is magnetometer tracking with something like buying or building a small and cheap EDtracker module, or even more simply just strapping a newer phone to my head with OpenTrack. It just seems more simple and reliable overall, and doesn't require me to be constantly centered in front of my webcam for it to work well, as well as it's dirt cheap.

Just my two UEC though, really. Most will likely adopt the FoIP cam because of the social aspect of FoIP, but in the meantime spending a few bucks on a magnetometer module, or again just strapping a phone to your head, will get you as good of results as anything else.

I am a streamer who is looking to improve my set-up over this summer. One of the things I am looking to do is separate the audio from my game system to a USB mixer I am looking to pick-up. My big tradeoff would be that no longer I'd have separate tracks on OBS Studio (where it records the audio) but with easily being able to adjust audio live better through a mixer I think it's worth it.

-
So my set-up would be Game System HDMI Out -> Capture Card HDMI-In -> Capture Card HDMI-Out -> HDMI Splitter -> HDMI Audio Converter Extractor -> USB Audio Mixer.

Essentially after the audio converter, I'd plug this in (RCA Cables) into here (L and R Tape In on the board.) Sorry if I'm not technical enough...still learning a lot. Is this correct and would it work well?

How would I be able to send the sound out to a venue's sound system and then be able to control what they can hear on it while maintaining the stream on my computer captures a different sound?

For example: When an actual match is being played I do NOT want the commentators being heard on the live PA system as it would disrupt the competitors...so at that point I'd want the sound going to the venue system to be turned off...but once the game ends I'd want them to speak to the venue about any deals showing on screen, in general getting the crowd hype, etc. How would that be possible?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Fantastic is the same as marvelous. The default timing window for fantastic/marvelous is +/- 22.5 ms iirc. OP, you should have it turned on.

There are a number of solutions that involve plugging the controller into the Wii Remote so that the Wii U will read them as a Classic Controller.

For GameCube, you've got a couple of options. You can go with this adapter, which lets you use your existing GameCube controller. There's also this controller from Hori, which is an actual Classic Controller in the exact shape of the GameCube controller. I have both, and they both work well, but I prefer the Hori controller.

For N64, there's this adapter. It's the same idea as the GameCube adapter linked above. I haven't used this one myself, so I can't tell you from experience how well it works.

Because all of these options register as Classic Controllers, they have the advantage of being compatible with any Wii or Wii U game that uses it, which is very many of them. For N64 games on the Wii U Virtual Console, you'll be able to adjust the button mapping in the options menu to make sure everything plays just the way you remember it.

I hope this is helpful. Enjoy your Wii U, and welcome to the club!

u/moleman_dgaf · 5 pointsr/smashbros

Awesome! Like everyone else said, to play on console, you need:

  • CRT TV (cheap, pretty easy to find; HD tv's have some display lag)
  • Official GameCube controller (the new white or black ones are great; don't buy 3rd party, they feel cheap and won't last long)
  • First-generation Wii w/ sensor bar and wiimote (only early ones have GameCube ports/compatibility)
  • Melee disc, and Brawl disc for PM
  • 2GB SD card for PM. A larger one will work if you're willing to mod your Wii.

You can also emulate both games on Dolphin and play online with other people at Smash Ladder, as long as you have ISOs for the games and a GC controller->USB adapter. Adapters aren't very expensive (~$15) and netplay is a very good way of practicing with people if you don't have anyone around you.

The best bang for the buck in that price range would probably be the Turtle Beach XO One imo.

The XO Ones are a bit cheaper but they are a newer model than the XO Four and include the better chat adapter with mic monitoring and bass boost. Aside from the adapter the only real difference between the 2 models is the physical design of the headset itself. Feature wise they both have the 50mm drivers, detachable mic, work with other devices, etc. The XO Ones have a better feature set overall and perform much better than you would expect for their price. Amazon has them on sale right now for only 60 bucks:

Seconding the glass screen protector. I got the same one and it's awesome. Fits fantastically. I bought the original version too for my fiancé's Vita and it likewise is a great fit. Slightly curved edges too so there's no rough border.

As for a case, I don't use one. I bought the Nyko grip with the built in extra battery and carry my Vita with it in a 10 inch padded tablet case so I don't need to carry the parts separately.

I absolutely love the Nyko grip; it adds hours and hours of battery life and the Vita and the grip can be charged through the same port on the grip itself so I never have to remove it. Plus it's so much more comfortable to hold the system for extended play.

Yeah, I use the nyko power grip for everything vita that isn't remote play. For remote play I use the hori "remote play grips".

The weight including the vita feels slightly more than a ds4 to me, but never where I was uncomfortable. It just adds those controller grips that extend into the palms of your hands. It makes fps games or anything that is stick based much easier. I bought mine from Amazon for like 29. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G9X4YRM?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

If given the choice between my hori remote play grip (if the one you're looking at is similar) and the nyko battery one, the nyko is hands down more comfortable.

  1. All the most hyped games accept 4 players including NSMBU, Smash Bros 4, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and all those party games. All very kid and parent friendly, some a little bit more difficult than other.

  2. The base console only comes with a gamepad, controllers are a big price changer (for me at least). I suggest buying the Wii Remote Plus controllers as most of the games use them. Alternatively there is the Pro Controller, it's very praised, with a huge battery life and basically it's a gamepad without the screen.

  3. It's not as unpopular as expected, it depends mostly on the country, there's a huge fan base and at least I see a great future for it. You can check some of the Black Friday deals on this sub. Also Nintendo is getting it extremely right with it's exclusives, MK8 and Smash are awesome and for some "mature" games Bayonneta 2 have been very acclaimed. Next generation console is pretty far as they have just begin to launch all the main games for it.

edit: Oh and for the ps4 and xbone games that aren't available for the Wii U, Ubisoft is avoiding it and said that Watch Dogs may be the last one, you can only have a cinematic experience in Assassins Creed Unity with other consoles. We also won't have Call of Duty any more.No minecraft and something that I actually miss is the last FIFA we had is 13. So a bunch of games are available for ps4 and xbone but not for the Wii U, I would go even further and say most of these consoles games aren't on the Wii U. But hey almost all of the best games of the Wii U are exclusives too.
u/CroissanwichDiarrhea · 3 pointsr/PS4

Exactly this. I've been conflicted for a while, like OP, but realized that while XBONE exclusives are okay now, PS4 is about to blow them out of the water with their future lineup. I'm also much more invested in platinum trophies than 1,000 Achievement Points (stupid, I know). My XBONE is literally collecting dust at the moment because I'm much more of a PS guy, no matter how much I try other things.

OP, you can also easily order XBONE Thumbsticks from this Amazon seller and use this video to replace the PS4 thumbsticks for the best of both worlds. I did this after losing the rubber on my original sticks and am really happy with the results.

I absolutely love my vita! I originally got it for a Christmas present on black Friday last year and only wanted it for remote play. At first, I felt the remote play was horrible because the cramped controls.

But then I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G9X4YRM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1421123363&sr=8-2&dpPl=1&dpID=413RZxs4l1L&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SX200_QL40 and it's been a game changer!

I now play Destiny, BF4, and GTAV at about 90% (DS4 100%) whereas without the grips I was at around 30%. I use it whenever someone needs the TV or when I just want to go outside and chill in the hot tub.

The only negatives I've experienced are that you can't voice chat with friends while using remote play unless you have an amazing wireless headset connected to your PS4 and you need faster than 5 mbps internet to remote play away from home. Other than that I personally think the vita is worth purchasing for remote play if you can't always be on your TV and you don't want to disconnect it and move it all the time.

Your gaming life will change when taking a shit with remote play.

This looks really cool. How does it play without a headtracker? Is it a necessity? And would the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick be good enough? I don't want to drop a lot of money on it. Also, can you still be decent without buying planes?

edit: looks like there's a free program for head tracking, facetrackernoir, and you can get a webcam for under 20 dollars, so it's not too bad in terms of the cost for face tracking.
edit 2: PS3 Eye works on PC and it's 60fps, so that might be the best since it's only 17 dollars. http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Eye-3/dp/B000VTQ3LU

u/SubEclipse · 2 pointsr/hoggit

I'm running a home made headtracker with free-track that I've been using for probably 3 years now. I recently swapped out the camera I was using with a PS3Eye since they're only $8 on Amazon now, and performance is excellent.

If you know how to do basic soldering it's simple to build the point model, and the components will probably run you about $2-3... with a PS3Eye, you're looking at an approximate total build cost of $10-15 (assuming you have a soldering iron, etc).

Free-track is a little tricky to configure at first, but there's tons of good how-to's on their forums. Some people prefer the facetracknoir point tracker to free-track because it's a bit easier to set up and some report better performance. I've had mixed results with it over free-track personally.

Anyway, my point is trackIR5 + track clip pro will run you close to $200 and while I have yet to see an unbiased side by side comparison with a free-track setup, I can't imagine it's all that superior... BUT if you have the cash for one and don't like getting your hands dirty, it's a great option for that reason.

If you do end up building your own, feel free to PM me with any questions along the way.

The nintendo ones will probably be back in stock by the end of this month I'd say, hopefully with some amount to back up the demand. Last time they were available they were sold out almost instantly!

I will tell you this much: the jump from 3ds to wiiu is MUCH larger than the jump from WiiU Pro controller to GC controller, speaking from personal experience. Just getting an actual controller with actual joysticks (no offense, circle pad) will make a world of difference for you in terms of character control and responsiveness. I've seen a lot of people on this sub comment saying they felt like they got worse at the game when they got to the wiiu version; I think that's because control with the 3ds can be a little forgiving in comparison, which in the end just takes away a bit of the precision that you'll really need (and that, in my opinion, you can only really accomplish with the GC controller).

So I would say get Sm4sh for wiiu and pick up one of those controllers if you can, though I know they're a little bit pricey. It's hard to say when you'll have the opportunity to get the wiiu adapter, and this controller will be useful for other wiiu games outside of sm4sh (it's also my favorite controller for Mario Kart, for what that's worth) in the meantime, if that makes you feel any better. I've actually gotten very used to the pro controller and it works great as a substitute for the gamecube controller. let me know if you have questions about it!

u/ohnoesmilk · 3 pointsr/IAmA

DDR is a fun way of exercise.

There's Stepmania which is a ddr clone for the computer and you can find a whole shitton of songs for it online. They have pretty good pads on amazon that plug into the computer.

I got this pad. It works really well. It plugs into a ps2 too if you can find a game for that (all the new ddr games have really bad songs, but DDR Extreme 2 and before that better songs)

You can also get one of the cheaper pads that come in a bundle with a DDR game in the store. Those don't last too long, but they're good for beginners. There are PS2 to Computer controller converters for those.

I hope that helps!

This cable is a true s-video cable and it works great, much better than composite if your TV supports it.

https://www.amazon.com/Gam3Gear-Nintendo-Gamecube-Video-Cable-Super/dp/B00LE3EAIK

Alternatively Gamecube games look perfect on a Wii over component too, the cable and console are both available for cheap. This doesn't resolve for Gameboy Player unfortunately, wish we had a better solution for that.

u/movieguy2121 · 1 pointr/wiiu

I'm assuming you are looking at the one for $193.92 here
I would suggest paying a little bit more and getting a $200 'refurbished' unit direct from Nintendo.
The console comes in better condition (most of these are probably new units that Nintendo took back from retailers when the Wii U went off the shelves), with all necessary cords and cables, and also includes a one year warranty from Nintendo.
In my opinion, Nintendo's refurbished consoles are the best way to buy a Wii U right now because you know exactly what you're getting and you get a great warranty package with it. If you would rather order from Amazon, the only way you can find more about what you're buying is if you contact the seller or actually order it. Amazon has a pretty good return policy so if you are missing something, I'm sure you could just send it back.

I just bought these not even 2 months ago http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EQE0YM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're amazing. You can adjust the game and chat sound with the headset. The sound is so much better, especially for fps and adventure games. You hear every little detail and you can properly feel the tone of the game. You can also put the tv on mute and listen solely through the headset if you need silence in the house for some reason. The best part is that it's $40 so it's not hurting your pockets too much.

There are better quality ones out, but it's great if you're like me and just want a headset that plays the game audio with chat features for cheap.

>Also I hope they release new Gamecube style controllers for Switch.

That would be awesome, but if they don’t, you can use the Wii U GameCube Adapter (available pre-owned at GameStop for $17.49) by simply plugging it into the dock.

I’d be surprised if they don’t release a new Super Smash Bros.-themed Switch controller in the style of the GameCube controller, like they did on the Wii U, though. If they don’t, they will definitely release a new adapter.

u/MBCnerdcore · 2 pointsr/wiiu

You know how the Nunchucks plug into the Wii Remotes? Well there's also Classic controllers and Gamecube controllers that also plug into the Wii Remotes.

Here's a couple of examples. The Gamecube one is a third party controller but for Mario Kart and Smash it feels great, and it's also compatible with any games that use the Wii U Pro controller.

The Nintendo-made Classic Controller was originally for the Wii, but it still works on the Wii U for most games.

Smash Brothers purists are going to crap all over this advice because they only accept the Official Nintendo GameCube Controller & Adapter as a viable device, but you guys aren't playing tournaments, it's just some kids and family coming over to play Nintendo.

These controllers are much easier for a new player to understand than the Nunchuck/Wii Remote combo, and they are relatively cheap. Certainly much cheaper than the official Nintendo GameCube controllers and adapter, and cheaper (although not as perfect) as the Wii U Pro controller.

Nintendo DS edition is probably the best version. Quick cartridge loading and also contains the anime fmv's from the Playstation 1 version. Best English translation in this version as well. Here's an amazon link. It's $45 there but it's one of the best games of all time.

If that's not obtainable it's on Steam right now. Other versions include SNES (expensive cartridge, like Earthbound), Playstation 1 (paired with a Final Fantasy game). I don't wanna break rule 5 so I'll just say SNES classic edition as well.

u/M-Tiger · 1 pointr/wiiu

The number one thing I recommend is to get a wired network adapter. I grabbed one of them off Amazon for like $10 and haven't regretted it.

With ZombiU, you'll have to go into the game settings and tell it to pump the sound out of the controller. You will have to use both the controller and monitor to play the game though.

With MH3U, after you update the game, you can go into the settings and enable Type 2 for the controller for off-screen play. This will make all the audio for the game come out of the controller, and the controller will mirror the monitor. You can turn off the monitor and just use the controller, or you can use the monitor and not look at the controller, whichever is more convenient for you. (With Type 1, the monitor will show the game and the controller will show some touchscreen options, sorta like you're playing a giant 3DS. I forget if audio comes out of the controller in this case or not.)

Btw, I recommend using some nice headphones with the gamepad, as well as setting the sound output for the gamepad to surround.

u/Undersaturated · 1 pointr/crtgaming

Thanks so much!
As for the S-video adapter, if I have an S-video cable for the Super Nintendo, for example, then would something like this work for getting the S-video quality on the monitor while still being compatible with the Super Nintendo?

EDIT: This is my Super Nintendo S-video cable

u/Kyhan · 1 pointr/xboxone

I have this. I managed to get it for a good discount.

The sound quality is fantastic, and it comes with its own adapter. The headset itself is detachable and mostly universal (I often use it with both my computer and smartphone), and while plugged into the controller provides mic-monitoring with almost no delay—you can hear yourself as though you had no headset on.

Also, since the adapter is detachable from the headset, if the headset itself breaks (or you want to upgrade at a later date) you can just buy any new universal headset (such as this, for example) and the adapter should work.

The headset is comfortable for extended periods (within reason—I've had some ear pain after a full day of gaming). I only wish it were over-ear, rather than on-ear. For gaming headsets under $100, I think this is a major contender, and highly recommend it.

[Edit]
Almost forgot: if you just need a pair of headphones, you can detach the mic (it plugs into the left ear with a 3.5mm jack), and they work as a really good pair. My only complaint is that the cable is pretty short in this instance, so don't expect to plug it into your computer and walk away. I'm personally used to a 6-foot wire on my re-wired sennheisers, so unless you're spoiled like me, it shouldn't be a problem.

u/34576473 · 2 pointsr/PS4

But the fish this year move when you get near them! Thats gotta be worth something.

Also the maps aren't $60 (I haven't even bought the maps in the past few Cods anyway) and you can get XBL 12 month for $45 http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-LIVE-Month-Membership-Online/dp/B002VBWIP6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377133383&sr=8-1&keywords=xbox+live

And hopefully since ps4 is clearly the superior console, the 6 year olds will all mass migrate away from the xbox and settle down in the DDR5 climate which will surely make a huge difference with a game like cod.

u/Taggart451 · 8 pointsr/3DS

Most people are saying things like cases and screen protectors, but there are a few practical things that I couldn't live without now that I have them.

  • Wrist Strap: I love being able to actually hold on to my device and quickly get it out of my pocket. I've also read stories on this sub of someone trying to steal his 3DS OUT OF HIS HANDS and run away, but he had a strap so it didn't work.

  • 3DS XL Charge Cradle: This may just be because I have a hard-on for docks and cradles. I have a car mount for my phone, one for my phone at home to charge, one for my 3DS, one for my Vita, for my PS4 controllers....you get the deal. I love being able to quickly drop something down and it charges. Cannot recommend enough.

  • 3DS USB Charge Cable: You never know when you want to charge your device, and when traveling it is a godsend. This way you can use the power brick you brought with you for the same as USB charging your phone. That way your regular 3DS charger can be used in that dock I showed earlier...

Also, the 3DS game card cases other people have put on here. Just any one will be fine, so you can put all the cases on a shelf but you have easy access to them later. I put my disc games in a binder for the same reason.

As far as controllers go I think most people would be better off buying one of these three adapters:

http://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-nintendo-u/dp/B00RSXRLUE/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_text_y

and real Nintendo branded Gamecube controllers like these:

http://www.amazon.com/Super-Edition-GameCube-Controller-Wii-U/dp/B00L3LQ4B4/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_img_y
or

The reason I recommend this is because the latest development builds of Dolphin have native controller support built in. This means you can just setup the adapter to work with Dolphin and then plug in your Gamecube controllers and you're ready to go with no additional setup. The controllers auto calibrate just like on a real console and you can even unplug controllers and plug them back in during gameplay and everything will still work. It's works really awesome.

u/ExplodingFalcon · 2 pointsr/smashbros

I would suggest getting a Wii. Not all models are backwards-compatible so make sure you get on that is. Here is a list of different Wii models, though I'm not sure if it'll help. Which game you want to play is completely up to you. Having a Wii gives you access to all of the games except 3DS/Wii U. I can't say for sure that this is the best option since I have no experience with emulating.

You probably want to use a Gamecube controller. A good controller either has "Nintendo Gamecube" written on it or has the Smash 4 logo on it. If you can find them in a local game or electronics store, great. If not I'd suggest amazon.

Hope this helps.

u/Alphafraud · 1 pointr/smashbros

The adapter exists.

The Switch dock exists and has 3 USB ports. All the game needs to do is respond to input from the adapter. It works on Android, Windows, Linux, Mac and Wii U (OS?). I'm pretty sure they can add it into a new Smash or a port without any issue.

And why? Because the fans use GC controllers and they've kept supporting it for 3 generations now. They're still making and selling SSB-branded GC Controllers.

Also, how have you been waiting since Brawl came out? There is a better Smash after Brawl, with a different engine/physics. Even for an entirely new one, people would want GC support. I don't/won't feel like buying 3 more Pro Controllers, when me and my friends all have SSB brand GC controllers.

You'd be best off getting a charger with 4 USB ports like this and four 3DS USB cables. If you want it to be a little more like one cable, plug all the USB cords into the charger, and then either use electrical tape or some kind of sleeving to group the cables into one nice bundle. I do something similar for my computer peripherals (which are in a hub, 6ft from my PC), and personally, I just wrapped a band of electrical tape around the cables every 6 inches. It looks slightly ghetto, but it gets the job done.

Note: You'll have to look around for better deals and stuff. I just took the top search results off Amazon to link what I was talking about. I didn't do any research on whether what I linked is good or not.

This, Rlaxoxo is correct. With CL-Eye Test you can adjust the brightness and contrast wayyyyy down. You can also push the colour into the red spectrum while bring down green and blue. I play in a room with south facing glass doors leading to a balcony and an east facing window. I rarely have external light issues.

By the way, I picked up one of the old PS 3 EYE (this exact model):
http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Eye-3/dp/B000VTQ3LU/189-3730229-5569820?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

I didn't have to remove the IR filter (don't know if it even has one). I tested with IR diodes before meddling with it and it works. Now I have a webcam if required and an IR tracking solution that works like a dream. Unless you're sitting in the Sun, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

By the way, if your IR diodes are a little patchy (not too bright and easily lost in Opentrack (don't use the other programs -they're wank by comparison - I've tried them), then switch out the diode(s) which seem weaker with other diodes. There's a myth that you need a specific diode, as long as it's an IR diode it will work. The easiest solution is to get them from old IR TV/DVD/CD remote controls. Some people will have you jump through a whole ritual to get this working, my advice - test at every stage to see if a step is skipable. Example:

1: Get diodes & wire in series to USB
2: Run camera with CL-Eye Test program
Can you see the lights brightly and adjust everything else until it's in shadow? If yes then you only have to set up Opentrack and you're done

u/BobRainicorn · 3 pointsr/smashbros

Honestly you'd be in the best position to know whether or not he wanted one. All an amiibo is is a figurine that learns and emulates play habits. Would he really be into something like that? Or just ask him passingly like "hey i keep hearing the term amiibo whats that?" and try to get info that way.

The classic safest bet would always be, and always has been, a new gamecube controller. make note that it must be an official nintendo made controller, or he most likely will not use it.

This is what I did to ensure excellent online experience

  1. Check that your TV has GAME MODE "on"

  2. Use a WiiU Lan Adapter

  3. Call your internet provider to ensure that your speed is infact, what it should be - also using an internet speed test (try CNET's)

  4. Check your modem/router. I bought a new router which was vastly superior to my old Belkin POS

  5. test your connection with other devices (maybe WiiU hardware issue)

  6. ensure your family/SO isn't hogging the bandwidth while you play.

Okay, certainly not state of the art, but it's wireless (bt headphones and battery powered IR leds), and it only cost me about $15 out of pocket to add the head tracking.

Now, to be fair, that $15 - $8 for the IR LEDs and $6 for the PS3 Eye - is sort of an "HGTV" style cost estimate, since I didn't count the 2' length of old phone cord I cannibalized for wire, the filament or $300 3D printer to make the LED holder, the $1.50 130mAh battery I pulled from an old toy or the $2 connector from the same, or the soldering iron, holders, magnifying glasses, snips, cable ties, and sandpaper I had to use to adjust the modified PS3 Eye so it would re-focus. Nor the hundreds of hours put in by the OpenTrack programmers which I got for free thanks to their OS model. Or the 2 hours I spent wiring the @#$#^ thing up through those little tiny conduits. Or the $35 headphones I bought so that it could be completely wireless.

But, you know, aside from all that - yeah $15 and I'm now part of the head tracking crowd!

I honestly wouldn't recommend the PS Eye unless you plan on streaming games with handcam action (rhythm games, maybe fighting?).

Hello, I just bought RoA and I've got the same results as this using the Mayflash adapter and this controller, but when I'm on any character select screen (versus mode, practice mode, etc..), the cursor slowly moves up automatically. Yet, when I use THIS controller, everything is perfectly fine. This leads me to believe the problem is with that first specific controller. Any thoughts or comments? I could keep using the black one, but I want to use the white one perfectly as well.

I'm one for loyalty. I can,T really change my Xbox but the headset I bought from Beexcellent was not good enough. Cheaper price yes but not good enough. I returned it and Bought the turtle beach Turtle Beach EAR FORCE XO One - Xbox One a bit more expensive but it comes with the adapter and has mic monitoring. I should be good to go.

Thanks for the suggestion much appreciated.

Actually it's 90€... I've never in my life bought a second hand controller that I liked for any console (and I've bought maybe 15 overall), and with the recent spike in prices I can't see good second hand controllers being super cheap either.

But if you're fine with that then good for you I guess.

Ah, sorry to hear that. Yes, I did try going back to a direct connection, but no luck.

They are great. Found a good tutorial on youtube and was able to replace them easily. Took about 45 minutes. They fit perfectly for me (others have said they need WD40 to make them feel better).

Seems to me there's three reasons to buy Wii U Smash when you already have it on 3DS:

  • You have a crew that comes over and games and Smash would get played.
  • You want to start going to tournaments, you should be practicing on the right hardware and the most recent software updates.
  • You are certain you'd play online and you want the bigger screen when you do.

I bought it when we got the Wii U over Christmas because of the first bullet point; Fighting games aren't my jam, but if we have 5+ people over then odds are 3 or more will be up for Smash. I rarely play it by myself, but it sees as much play as anything we own because of people coming over.

If you decide to get it, you'll need the right set up too. Fighting game tournaments require wired controllers, and on the Wii U that requires an adapter.

If you buy a new console, look for the Smash/Splatoon Bundle:
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nintendo-Wii-U-Splatoon-and-Super-Smash-Bros-Console-Deluxe-Set/46332497

I think it was a holiday special, but you may be able to find a local walmart, target, or something that still has it for $300. If you can't, the Mario Kart bundle is less than $300 on Amazon, and Smash is usually right at $50 new on there.

In addition to the gamepad (default controller), there's two options for Smash-compatible controllers, the "Fight Pad" that plugs into the back of the WiiMote, and the "Smash Bros Gamecube Controller" that plugs into a Gamecube adapter. At tournaments, they'll make you use Gamecube controllers wired through an adapter, otherwise there's too much interference.

If you have old Wii accessories, you can use wiimote/nunchuk combos from that, and if you have the gamecube adapter you can use old gamecube controllers.

Lots of the Smash DLC is discounted if you buy it for the 3DS and Wii U at the same time.

Don't forget, there's lots of other solid games for the Wii U that aren't on any other console - you can find lists in other places on this or the Wii U sub - that may make the math look a little better.

If you are just starting to learn DDR, shin splints will not be an issue for you until later down the road. It depends how heavy you are I suppose. I got them because I had chicken legs and slamming them over and over again on a metal pad isn't the healthiest thing ever. For a pad at your price range, you'd be looking at a thin roll out pad. They work, but if you plan on making a habit out of this, I highly recommend you save up for this one:

http://www.amazon.com/PS2-Energy-Foam-Deluxe-Dance-Playstation/dp/B000GHG0BA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343764165&sr=8-3&keywords=DDR+pad

The foam will also take some stress off your shins.

I attribute my success to 30 minutes to an hour of playing each day, with no breaks during this time on the highest difficulty. Sip water in between songs!

Best of luck to you and I hope you lose over 9000 pounds.

Do yourself a favour and get a head tracker. Super easy to build and a fun little project.

  1. Build the circuit as shown in the second pic (with USB). The IR leds can be bought from ebay in packs of 5 or from mouser etc

  2. Use this guide for building the headpiece.

  3. Get a ps3eye and remove the ir filter. Video here. Make sure you get the good version of the camera. If you buy from Amazon (or any other place where you can see buyers' comments) people will usually say if it can be modded. You can also use it without removing the filter but it tracks much better if you remove it.

Or buy a ready made trackir. The headpiece of the trackir is so shit though that some people actually build this to use with the track ir they bought. Depends if you have money to burn.

If you have a lot of devices and you can think of a couple of occasions to "need extra battery" for smart phones, tablets, or other devices, too, my suggestion would be to invest in a bigger USB external battery.

I personally have a pretty intense one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YRG5JQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And you can pair it to adapt to your 3DS with any to USB cable, such as

Turtle Beach These will do fine

they go on sale once in a while, I got them about 2 weeks after the game came out for $43. Like stated above, they are game changers. I never liked big headphones in the past but these are really comfortable. Nice short cord to the controller, easy button set up for muting and adjusting volume.

u/Icystorm9 · 3 pointsr/wiiu

The GamePad comes with the console and you must have one. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The Pro Controller is optional. In multiplatform games it's generally really helpful because it's more comfortable than the GamePad. So, for example, the game Darksiders: Warmastered Edition - The GamePad has no added functionality. The screen just shows what the TV shows. The Pro Controller works just as well. However in games like ZombiU, the GamePad is used for inventory management and other things. The GamePad is the way to go in that case. The Pro Controller is really good but not useful in every case. For playing Wii games, you will need a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The Wii U Pro Controller will not work for Wii Games. However, the Wii has its own Pro Controller. It works for many games. You can buy it here. The list of Wii games that support the Pro Controller can be found here.. (The Wikipedia page says Classic Controller, but the Classic Controller and the Pro Controller are the same. The Pro Controller is a more comfortable version of the Classic Controller.)

u/EatDrinkBoogie · 1 pointr/PS4

I'd absolutely 100% recommend getting one of these bad boys.. extended battery life, and it's pretty comfortable to boot. I game for hours on the Vita with this. This one is for the newer slim model:

It looks like a third party controller, while it would work for a bit those controllers fall apart really fast.

I would recommend something like this or this. While it's a bit more expensive it'll last you years and years instead of maybe a month like the third party controller will.

u/ThatOtherGuy435 · 11 pointsr/starcitizen

Not to bash the official TrackIR, because it is a very solid product... I put together something very equivalent for less about $20.

  • PS3Eye - $12

  • FaceTrackNoIR - $0

  • DIY IR LED clip (5v supply, serial build) - ~$5-10 (SFH 485 P, 6.8ohm resistor from the local electronics store, 5v power supply

I started with FaceTrackNoIR's 'face tracking' module but found it a little bit wobbly in low light, which is how I do 90% of my gaming. Building the IR LED clip and using the 'Point Tracker' module for FTNoIR gives me 98% of what the full TrackIR system does.

    ~Edit~

Also, I didn't do anything with removing the IR filter, or adding a normal light filter. Works perfectly fine in both the wide angle and narrow modes.

    ~Edit2~

One more thing to note for anyone going this route - you're going to want to change the defaults for the Accela mk2 filter in FTNoIR. I used the settings outlined in the PointTracker Guide and am very happy with them.

These are NOT GameCube controllers. They're Wii Classic Controllers in the shape of a GCN controller that plug into the bottom of a Wii Remote. The new GameCube controller is all black and has a Smash Bros. logo in the middle and will be released, alongside the adapter for the Wii U, later in the year.

Since they're technically wireless - a Wii Remote doesn't plug into the Wii/Wii U - there will be input lag unlike a real GCN controller, which will be wired.

Also, it doesn't have the C-Stick. You'll also notice that these "wired fight pads" have the L, R, ZL, ZR buttons like Classic Controllers instead of the L, R, and Z button placement of the real GCN controller.

The only value these will have is looking nice next to their respective Wii Remotes or playing Wii Virtual Console games.

The official upcoming NEW GCN controller can be viewed here: http://amzn.com/B00L3LQ4B4

Thanks /u/hankydysplasia. Two questions.

1. Since I already got the HORI adapter which I believe is USB 2.0... Do you believe it is worth it for me to go and buy a USB 3.0 adapter as a replacement? Will it have any noticeable affect on my experience? I like to think I would notice the difference but I'm not sure and you seem like an expert... What say you?

2. HORI says it supports 1000BASE-T... which I was led to believe that means it can support Gigabit... yet since it is USB 2.0 and not 3.0 does this mean that HORI is simply being misleading?

Appreciate you.

u/MrCobs · 1 pointr/starcitizen

The guides are a bit scattered around the web, I'll run through the basics of what you need.

I got these leds from LEDsupply, they were 60¢ a piece, and you need 3 of them.

You also need a resistor which are $1 a piece, and you specifically need a 70 ohm resistor. At LEDsupply, at checkout there is a additional order notes box that you need to specify the ohm rating of the resistor.

Then you need the PS3 Eye webcam. This webcam is capable of 120fps at lower resoultion, and 60-75fps at 640 by 480. For $7.29 you can't beat it. You also need the CL-Eye-Driver which is around $2.00 from a third party.

Additionally if you don't have any, you will need some small wire which is 25¢ per foot, a spare long usb cable that you will be cutting (I used an old turtle beach wire because it was so long), and some blank film negative.

For tools you are going to need a soldering iron, solder, a file, and possibly a hot glue gun.

The wiring diagram is super simple (substitute that resistor with yours, ignore the fuse) and you can mount the led's to a hat, or make a clip, whatever is easiest for you.

Download opentrack and take a look in the PointTracker>Settings>Model section and you will see different models you can make. Once you make the model you just put in the dimensions of the led's in there.

After all is said and done you have to file down the LED's to a flat, rough surface so they don't shine so bright into the webcam, and it gives them a wider field of view. This project was cheap and fun and the result is totally awesome. Feel free to message me with any questions.

P.S. If you decide against the 5v usb wire to power the leds, and want to use a battery instead, your resistor is going to be different!

  2. I bought one the week they were released, and had a ton of fun with it. It was great for parties, and there were a ton of games coming out I was looking forward to. However, one night I left my apartment for a couple hours and came back to find that it, along with all of my other electronics, had gotten stolen. I haven't been able to afford replacing it, so that's why it's wound up on my wishlist.

  3. Oh, yeah, of course. It's definitely a luxury item, and my life will go on without it. It's just hard having something you saved up your money for being taken from you suddenly.

u/oniony · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

This stuff is pretty obvious. Look at your friends, people you know. How many people use wired ethernet nowadays? It's a vanishingly small number I'm sure.

So why put a port that is niche onto a device and make it more expensive for everyone? When it comes to maximising profits on hardware then every penny counts. Putting an ethernet port on adds to the Bill of Materials (BoM: the amount it costs to manufacture the device), it increases the number of faulty devices coming back for repairs under warranty and increases the amount of testing required. So you're adding costs and risks to your device when only, what, 5% of your customers will ever use it.

That barely used ethernet port could be the different between a $299 and $310 device, and that leading digit could have a huge psychological effect on customers' perception.

So what's the alternative? Well, manufacture a separate dongle. Because it's a niche product you can jack up the price to cover its design, manufacture and testing costs and warranty returns. Because it's separate to the main device it doesn't matter so much if there are issues with it. In fact, you could tender it out to a third-party to manufacture and not have to stress about it much at all. It's off your critical path, it's out of your books. Your risky, expensive port has been transformed into pure profit.

u/ProfessionalHobbyist · 3 pointsr/Reprap

The safest thing is a properly-sized resistor on the 5V rail. If you don't do that, the PSU may appear to run fine without it initially and then randomly shut down, reset, etc., potentially ruining prints. You need to keep drawing 1-2 amps at 5V to keep things happy. If you really want ideas for things to put on 5V that are actually useful:

  • 5V LEDs
  • Raspberry Pi
  • a powered USB hub
  • USB webcam
  • 5V fan(s) to cool stepper drivers/control board

Source: Have repurposed several AT and ATX PSUs for bench supplies and reprap power supplies.

I was trying to convey to people just how easy it is to cheat, and I was saying that I'd like to demonstrate it, and they were getting uncomfortable with me saying that. I was hoping to spur people on to beef up security, but instead, it seemed that they rather just continue to ignore that it's possible. I can understand that adding barriers to entry is undesirable, but we have to think of the future. You can't just retroactively decide to add rules for videos that were already made. You can't invalidate all previous runs when you suspect one of being too good, and you can't be selective if there's no true sign of wrongdoing.

If you want to be sure there's a real person putting these inputs in, then a generalized (should work for pretty much anything) method that I'd propose is having mandatory hand cams. You can get a 120 fps camera for about $6 on Amazon right now.

Soft and foam are different. Soft pads have no structure to them; you could roll them up if you wanted. The foam (sometimes called firm) pads are essentially the same thing but they have foam inserts in them which can help longevity and responsiveness.

The D-Force Softpad appears to be one of the best softpads available but it is pricey ($45+) for a softpad and only connects to PCs.

If you are willing to spring for a slight more expensive option, DDRGame's Energy Pad had Xbox, USB, and PS2 connectors and are reasonably priced for foam pads ($60). A number of people on this sub, myself included, have recommended this pad, though it appears that there is a non-trival amount of factory defects going by a recent post and Amazon reviews.

u/TheSambassador · 1 pointr/necrodancer

This pad has been going strong for me for over 3 years:

I was playing DDR on it for about 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. Nowadays I'm not playing on it, but it's a great pad for only a little over $50.

Only thing - the USB part of it breaks VERY easily if you pull the cable sideways while it's plugged in. I had to resolder the USB connection once, though it's continuing to work fine. If you just use a USB extension cable you shouldn't ever run into that problem.

Welcome to the wonderful world of retro gaming in 2018.
Hopefully you have a setting for it like mentioned, if not, your tv just doesn't like that resolution. Solution is different tv, modded console, or upscaler. They do make cheap ones, but they are usually not great and you get what you pay for. If you find a Tv that still supports Svideo that's the best cheap option for n64. i've actually had good experience with [this] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LE3EAIK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) cable.
Also remember that a lot of the cheap composite to hdmi "upscalers" don't actually upscale at all. They just convert the composite line to hdmi, and still send the same signal. So you get the same problem. Also some HDMI inputs just don't like 240 or even 480i at all. I ran into this thinking a cheap $10 SD to HDMI adapter would solve a similar problem for my genesis. Nope, not a true upscaler.

If he plans on playing alone, then controller wise you are good with just the Gamepad. If you want to play with them, or if he is the type to play with buddies at home then I would have to recommend a Pro Controller. There is also a season pass type of DLC where for $20 you get all of the DLC as it releases, but I would probably wait to see if he enjoys the game before buying that, plus the game without DLC is plenty big so he may not even want it. Here is the page on DLC for Hyrule Warriors if you want more info on that.

Having true stereo sound will really help you a lot. You will be able to hear where people are coming from before they are even on your radar. It also has a good mic. Right now you just hear stereo from in front of you and it is hard for your ears to distinguish right from left.

Using you mic and doing call outs is going to be distracting at first. But you will get a hold of it and you will start to make a big difference with your call outs. The names of the place on the map show up in the bottom left of your screen good luck.

If you don't mind playing games with Super Nintendo graphics (I sure as hell don't) Chrono Trigger will hold up today without any problems, though this is also probably due to the stagnant JPRG archetype. I'm not sure what kind of foam is in the d-force, well the amazon page does say it has "super high density" foam (you definitely want the dense foam.) I used this pad for a long time https://www.amazon.com/Dance-Revolution-Energy-Deluxe-Playstation-2/dp/B000GHG0BA, but the unfortunate thing about these pads is you will eventually suffer from "drifting arrows" (the raised cardboard inserts in the mat end up floating around.) What I ended up doing (once my "drifting arrows" became unworkable) was I took out the foam insert and taped it to the back of my FIRST "soft" dancepad (with double sided duct tape.) I swear to god it works even better than the original, I use velcro strips along the outside of the arrows (the soft side) to easily feel around for the arrows. (to be clear, most "soft" pads do not usually have the raised arrows, ALTHOUGH there ARE "soft" pads WITH raised arrows. Be careful when you're buying)

I've used 360 controllers without issue. I set up a PS4 controller for my friend yesterday and that also worked without issue. You'll be fine with either one, though the PS4 controller needed DS4Windows running to make it work properly. The 360 will just work with windows.

The best solution, however, is to buy a Super Smash Bros. Gamecube Adapter and a Gamecube controller.

u/Psyonix_Corey · 53 pointsr/nintendo

Hi kevcorky,

While Rocket League does require a higher connection quality than some other titles, we do have a lot of players with solid wireless connections that play just fine. In terms of our internal testing of Switch, it's running great over wifi.

That said, we do know some players have run into issues with their home wireless networks and online play, and there are a few things to discuss on that front.

  1. There is an officially licensed Ethernet adapter for the Switch available if you experience connection quality issues over wifi.
  2. We are implementing additional network options in a future update to let users control the rate of network updates sent to/from the game client. This may improve reliability on some networks where our frequent update rate can cause problems.
u/eutral · 1 pointr/CruciblePlaybook

I use this $55 one

Comes with the adapter for the 3.5mm jack. Adapter has an easy way to adjust game vs voice audio, as well as easily mute. If you ever upgrade, at least you'll still have the adapter.

I've plugged the the headset into my computer and it works great. People always think I have a fancy mic setup.

The mic also detaches so you can use them as normal headphones.

u/Crasher_TL · 25 pointsr/Games

It's a matter of opinion. I think that FTL looks pretty nice while Terraria looks like crap, yet I never grew up with games that looked like that.

BTW, it's not 8-bit graphics. This is 8-bit. Note how everything isn't really shaded. Now compare it to Terraria. 8-bit means there is a 256 colour scheme. Here is the total amount of colours you can achieve on an 8-bit console. While it may seem like a lot, it's not that much if you compare it to what we have today.

Pixel art is the correct term. Terraria and most other games are usually either 16-bit or 32-bit, meaning you can have a more diverse colour scheme.

Most indie games aren't 8-bit, they're usually 16-bit or higher. Of course, there are some that try to be/are 8-bit (Cave Story and VVVVVV comes to mind), and since "8-bit" is fairly easy to copy (quick to make and easy to animate, as the sprites are usually small).

So if you have a limited budget (which 99% of indie devs do), then you'll more likely to get out more content/polish things up if you didn't spend 50 hours doing sprites.

Bottom line is this: most indie games use pixel art, not "8-bit graphics". And whether or not you like it is all up to you, it's your opinion.

Sorry if this came off as ranty, I just find it annoying when somebody gets the two terms mixed up.

u/MHzBurglar · 3 pointsr/wiiu

No need to apologize: SSB isn't for everyone, so not everyone would be following this stuff!

The idea is two-fold: You can use any existing Gamecube controllers that you already own, AND they made brand new Gamecube controllers that work with the adapter as well as any real Gamecube and Wii system.

see: http://www.amazon.com/Super-Smash-GameCube-Controller-Wii-U/dp/B00L3LQ4B4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1422317853&sr=8-4&keywords=gamecube+controller

The controllers are about $25-$30 each if you can find them at MSRP, so they're a good deal if you are in need of new controllers for your old systems.

As far as playing Smash with a Gamecube controller vs a non-Gamecube controller goes, it's largely preference. There is a HUGE competitive fight scene that has formed around SSB Melee (the Gamecube version) and SSB Brawl (the Wii version), and since both games support the Gamecube controllers, it is seen as the gold standard for any serious SSB player.

The advantage it originally added was being able to use the C-Stick for quick smash attacks, as well as conveniently placed buttons that allowed for quick and efficient access. This makes it a little better than the other controller offerings (and WAY better than the wiimote + nunchuck) for the more competitive players

For the casual player, the Gamepad and Pro Controller will work fine (and the right stick works like the C-stick) but anyone who plays Smash a lot and is used to the Gamecube controller will swear by nothing else.

Personally, I only use the Gamecube controller as I don't like using the 'diamond' button placement found on the Gamepad/Pro controller/3DS for smash.

tl;dr: Nintendo released the adapter and new controllers as a bit of fanservice for the more hardcore SSB players who heavily requested Gamecube controller functionality with the new game.

u/PonderousWanker · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I recommend the Logitech G230 headset, its 7.1 surround and the mic is absolutely stellar compared to my Turtle Beach X12 headset. The mic on it was absolute dog shit, my mates kept hearing echoing in teamspeak. Could have been a faulty headset but i'm well pleased with the upgrade and it's in your price range. It matches my black and red setup like a dream.

u/Meallus · 1 pointr/gaming

I know for a fact there is a way to do this though iirc the article about it said you would probably get better results with a controller since the PS3 version is designed for use with a gamepad. I'll see if I can dig up that article, if I can I'll edit this and post the link.

Edit: Found a couple of threads about it on COD forums and most of them agree that the "best" way to do this is use one of these. Heres hoping that helps!

Hori's good, and I was pretty happy with the quality of the equivalent Wii / Wii U controller they made a few years back.

Though as the other responder suggests, going with official GameCube controllers isn't a bad option, either. 100% accurate and not TOO much more expensive to get four of those plus adapter than four of something else. Extra bonus: rumble. Extra negative: less versatile since it doesn't have all the buttons another Switch game might need.

u/yourwifeandkids · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Not sure there's that much variety. This (http://www.amazon.com/Support-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=zg_bs_13983791_10) is the best selling highest rated one on amazon, but I'm pretty sure this is the one officially endorsed by Nintendo (http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Port/dp/B003XWD1G2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1416550970&sr=1-1&keywords=wii+u+lan+adapter).

I doubt you could go wrong wither way, they both seem pretty solid.

u/cronotose · 1 pointr/crtgaming

Well first off, get yourself at least some S-video cables straight away. Some of them have some quality issues, I've had no significant interference problems with this one.

https://www.amazon.com/Gam3Gear-Nintendo-Gamecube-Video-Cable-Super/dp/B00LE3EAIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519447659&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+s-video&dpID=511QkWlFQdL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

It's not the best, but it is dirt cheap and it doesn't have a normal composite line to bleed over into your s-video feed.

I don't know this set in particular, but it looks like a pretty decent pick up as far as free consumer sets go. According to my google, it has component, so if you really want to get cheeky, you can pick up an rgb to component converter and set up a snes or genesis with component.

u/c0rgib0t · 2 pointsr/xboxone

These: http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Force-Amplified-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00KSVXSZU All of my xbox buddies and I have them, they go on sale between $40-$60 often but still not even $70 is bad for this, they have great control over which volume you want higher (chat or game) and include a noticeable bass boost button you can turn on and off. Also very comfy, I wear them for hours on end each day and barely notice them after awhile.

Edit: looks like they're out of stock on amazon right now, they have them at most major retailers.

u/LogicalSpider · 2 pointsr/battlefield3

Most people, and using here as an example, are hardened to answer this question with an immediate "no." Conversely, there are several mouse/keyboard converters for the PS3; here is the best one: Eagle Eye Converter
Plenty of videos on how to install, operate, and how it functions are available on Youtube. The advantage of using this in comparison to a controller is valid, but a great number of people are using it.

I had the same issue with a 4k tv, I bought these off Amazon and my N64 and Super Nintendo worked perfectly. You may just need the converter box.

There's the MS stereo headset for £30: -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-Xbox-One-Stereo-Headset/dp/B00I41H6DQ/

I own one of those and for the money I think it's really good. It comes with the headset adapter that plugs into the bottom of your controller.

I've heard good things about this one, for the money, but I have no experience of using it: -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Turtle-Beach-Amplified-Headset/dp/B00KSVXSZU/

That one's a bit more expensive, but it comes with Turtle Beach's version of the headset adapter which has all of the features of the MS headset adapter as well as mic monitoring and adjustable bass boost.

This is the one I use now, although it's £170: -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Astro-Gaming-3AS42-XOU9W-369-Headset-MixAmp/dp/B00O9N404Q

I really like it, although I would say it's a touch overpriced.

1 -- The Wii U Bundle

2 -- Because I love Nintendo and I skipped getting a regular Wii. I enjoy playing it at my parents' when I'm there. Also, Zelda. And Mariokart. And Smash Bros.

3 -- Probably... there are many games I have in my backlog to play, so I'd survive without it.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is actually a song I'm not as fond of as everyone else seems to be. Dunno why.

u/Xikar_Wyhart · 2 pointsr/nintendo

I mean I'm talking about this. Not the WiiU Fightpad

For the release of Super Smash 4 WiiU they released the adapter, and started reproducing the original GCN controllers, only with a different face plate with the Smash logo inside of saying "Nintendo". The wire is also like 8 feet instead of the 4ft the original had.

u/tehkeemo · 1 pointr/bloodborne

I tried many grips but I wasnt happy with them, so I decided to get these instead - http://www.amazon.com/2-Pack-Controller-Analog-Sticks-Dualshock-OneSoul/dp/B00IZSTNKW they fit DS4 perfectly fine and I can't recommend them more! They don't slip even in long gaming sessions.

Please be warned, to actually change them for the original ones you need to disassemble the controller first - which causes to loose the warranty.

If it's next to the modem you might as well use LAN. Nintendo makes an adapter https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Internet-Officially-Licensed-wii-u/dp/B01N6S068R but I am using one made by Trendnet and it works just as well on the Switch as it did on my Wii U, and costs $10 less.

The Insignia one I got from Best Buy didn't work though. You might have to scour the forums to see which one works if you don't want to buy the official overpriced one.

u/Eisrep · 1 pointr/vita

If you're worried about battery life, get the Nyko Power Grip.

It just about doubles the battery life on the vita slim while being an overall great grip--less hand cramps!

As for games, you might want to try out the PSP game Persona 3 Portable (available as a download on the PSN) either before or after P4G. Both games are really good for sinking a bunch of time into--it'll take plenty of flights to finish each.

This is what I did as well and the remote is absolutely amazing! A perfect complement to the Shield

Two things that were invaluable to me:

You can buy a PS3 Eye Camera for very cheap on Amazon (or used from a local Gamestop) and use the far field mic on it for Assistant. In Shield Experience 7.2.3, the voice button on the Fire TV remote triggers assistant, and then the Eye Camera's mic can be used. It is an equivalent experience to using the stock remote for me.

You can use Button Remapper to remap buttons on the Fire TV remote. The app allows you to remap single, (quick) double, and long presses on buttons. The customization that I chose to do was holding down the menu button for skipping forward entire tracks. The media buttons on the Fire TV are just for seeking within the current media playing, and a skip forward button is all that I personally needed to make the Spotify experience on my Shield perfect. Do note that Button Remapper has an option to do a one time in app purchase to unlock a few more customization options, and customizing the menu button is a part of this (from what I remember).

u/ZoopZeZoop · 1 pointr/vita

I have the Butterfox case and really like it. However, I use the Nyko Power Grips, which won't allow me to close the case. So, I bought the Amazon Basics Case, which works perfectly for my needs. Because the Amazon case is not made for the Vita, you will need to carry game-protecting case (e.g., this one) if you want to carry multiple cartridges with you.

u/oursland · 3 pointsr/robotics

I strongly suggest taking a look at visual techniques. Jakob Engel at the Computer Vision Group at TUM in Germany has developed a technique called Digital Sparse Odometry. The source is on his GitHub page.

This technique may need to be tuned to work on smaller devices like the RPi3, however the predecessor algorithm, LSD-SLAM, was less efficient and worked on phones in real-time.

Decent cameras can be had for cheap. I like the Sony PS3Eye as it provides an uncompressed feed of RGB components per pixel at 640x480x60 fps.

u/vanoreo · 24 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Mouse: Logictech G502. It is widely considered to be the "best" mouse for PC enthusiasts.

Keyboard: Will heavily depend on your preferences, but I have a DASKeyboard 4 Ultimate with Cherry MX Blues (tactile click). I have also heard nice things about the Corsair K70, and Strafe. If you are new to mechanical keyboards, I would recommend checking out the subreddit /r/mechanicalkeyboards for more information.

Headset: I just use an old set of Turtle Beach X12s I've had forever, because I usually just use my soundbar, but a buddy of mine prefers to use a desk mic and some Audio-Technica headphones.

EDIT: Saw your budget in the other comments. You should probably go with the Strafe for your keyboard. Most others below $100 aren't as high of quality. Personally, I think you should get the Strafe, the G502, and the headphones/mic combo.

u/nemeth88 · -4 pointsr/wiiu

you can always buy one of these: http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Battle-Mario-Version-Turbo-u/dp/B00ND0E5ZU

They are similar to the gamecube pad, but plug into a wii remote. Or buy a third party gamecube adapter, or hunt for an official adapter.

Or just play SSB4 with a different control scheme :-)

u/Cecilgene · 2 pointsr/xboxone

If you want a decent no frills headset, I recommend the Turtle Beach XO One. It comes with the headset adapter and they sound really nice. There are separate volume controls for party chat and for game sound.

If you already have a nice pair of headphones and don't plan on chatting with anyone, a less expensive option is to just go pick up the Xbox One Headset Adapter and use any headphones or earbuds you want.

u/infrared_hologram · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

All WiiU games and any Virtual Console games that are in the WiiU's eShop can be default be played 100% with the gamepad. If you want to play old Wii games you will most likely (99% of games) need a Wiimote and nunchuck. Based on personal preferences you can then opt for a Pro Controller to use with certain games if you want. For example, I played Hyrule Warriors exclusively with the Pro Controller even though I didn't have to, just 'cause.

u/bubstance · 3 pointsr/Gamecube

Then ignore GCVideo unless you feel like spending the cash for a new 'Cube.

This, 1000x this. The total price definitely ends up being under $30. as /u/jazzmasterfirefox said, you can get these cameras for under $10 at Gamestop or even Amazon. The driver to run these, made by Code Laboratories, does cost $3, however, I have found that the Eye camera is compatible with Ubuntu out of the box. So, if you have a linux streaming setup like I do, you can get a great camera for under $10.

Some Notes: this camera only records at a resolution of 640x480, so for the camera being your full stream, the resolution may be a bit low, however, I just use it in a face box, so the resolution is acceptable. Additionally, this camera captures at 60FPS natively, or if you lower the resolution by half, it captures 120FPS. The camera also features a noise cancelling microphone, which may save you a little bit of money on audio, however I can't very well attest to the quality, as I have a separate audio setup.

The debate shouldn't be about console vs PC as PS3 does support keyboard and mouse combo provided the developer has added the code for the same. Under the product name "Wired Fight Pad", you can clearly see the manufacturer is PDP, NOT NINTENDO. Here is the North American Amazon listing for the Smash branded Controllers. That image is not a placeholder and has been confirmed to be the final product image by several other North American retailers as well as numerous videogame news outlets. Here is another listing from BestBuy. I searched for these on AmazonUK (I assume you are not from North America) and was not able to find this controller which leads me to believe Nintendo has not officially announced the global availability of the GameCube adapter as well as the reissued controllers. As for North America, both the adapter and original model GameCube controller will be made available the day of Smash 4's release. I even have this here Bundle pre-ordered. Older model controllers circa 2001 will work with that adapter as well. Here is the listing for the stand-alone adapter.

No. The only legit Pro Controllers have the Wii U logo on them. For example...

I know you might be inclined to purchase one of these knock-offs but I would highly recommend investing in a Nintendo Pro Controller. First of all it will be covered under Nintendo warranty, and you can always send it in if it needs to be fixed. And the authentic Pro Controller has an 80 hour battery life when fully charged. They are completely worth purchasing. Save your money and buy the real deal.

Given this is for a school orientation I'd go for getting two of these pads.

I'd also get some wood or something to place under the pads, as well as something like velcro to secure the pads on the wood.

For the version of the game I'd either run StepMania with a PC (allowing you to use user-created songs which you can find online), or for a console route I'd say Extreme 2 (although DDRMAX and DDRMAX2 are nice too as other people have said).
