Ok I have moved about a dozen times in my life. Trust me I'm a pro at this. This will be long so I'm gonna divide into sections.

Furniture

• Don't buy most furniture until after you move. Why pay to move it when you can just have it shipped to your door, probably for free, or if you buy it locally have it delivered?
  
• Don't buy more than the bare necessities at first. It is tempting to make your whole house pretty, but money won't go as far as you think, and its easy to buy things in the beginning that don't work as well as you think or end up being wrong for the space. Better to have what you really need and take time to consider what you actually want to make your life better in that particular space. For me the necessities are:
  
  
  • A mattress
    
  • An inexpensive bed frame that replaces a box spring. You can always buy a headboard/footboard later. This one is great, has room for storage underneath, and it easy to put together/break down/move. • Craigslist, Amazon, Ikea are your friends. Online, read reviews critically. If people are saying it fell apart, don't buy it.
  
  
  • I have to give a particular shout out to Ikea stuff, I have some furniture I bought 10 years ago from them still in my home
    
    
• Shop Homegoods for discounted decorations, housewares, kitchen stuff, etc when you are ready aka after the move.
  
• If you need bedding Target often has cute bedding on sale.
  
  

  Moving itself
  

  
  

• Don't hire a moving company. Hire a U-haul, then through the U-haul website hiring people to load/unload the truck. You can have them load/unload only heavy stuff and take the rest yourself to save cash.
  
  
  • I did this on my last move and they moved all furniture from our 3 br house as well as most of our boxes for like $200. I think we spent less than $500 total on truck and movers (including gas).
    
  • I actually highly recommended this over moving furniture yourself in a borrowed pickup, or even yourself with a U-haul. The cost is well worth the convenience. Moving is hard.
    
    
• Don't pay for boxes. Boxes are easy to find for free. Typically I take 2 or 3 evenings late at night (around 10 pm) and just drive around behind strip malls until I find enough. (They don't put gross stuff in the dumpster, if there is I skip that one). Sometimes it only takes 1 night. Don't bother with grocery stores or large department stores, they crush their boxes. Check out liquor stores and the dumpsters behind strip malls.
  
  
  • Places I have found boxes in plenty:
    
    • Behind a Barnes and Noble
      
    • Behind a party store
      
    • Behind an Ulta
      
    • Behind clothing stores in strip malls (these are usually pretty larger, great for bigger and lighter items)
      
    • Liquor stores (they get so many they are usually happy to tell you what day they get their deliveries if you call. These are smaller boxes great for heavier items like books)
      
      
• Don't box clothes. Take plastic trash bags, cut a hold in the bottom, put clothes hangers through the hole, close the tie part, now your clothes are still hanging up but contained and ready to move. When you get to the new house, hang up in the bag, then just rip the bag off. Way easier than unpacking.
  
• Don't buy bubble wrap, find a place that stocks free local papers (every city usually has these around) and use paper to wrap your dishes and breakables. Save junk mail and store flyers as well for this.
  
• The one thing you should buy is moving plastic wrap, the kind on a 14" roll. Use it to secure blankets around wooden furniture to protect from scratches. Use it wrap any fabric furniture to protect from tears. Use it to group some awkward small boxes into one entity. I only discovered this the last time I moved and will never move without doing this again. This is the only time I have ever moved nothing got damaged, and there is also this very satisfied and "mission accomplished" feeling when your couch is wrapped and ready to go.
  
• Label everything with not only the contents but the room it goes in. Even in a small apartment this helps a ton when you unload. When you go to unpack everything will already be in the correct room. • Pack a box in each room of the things you will need your first night/week so you can easily find it in the unpacking chaos. So in your bathroom pack your shower stuff separate, in the bedroom your sheets, and in the kitchen keep your pots/pans and dishes clearly marked. This may not seem like a money tip but if you don't do this you will find yourself running to the store for paper plates or toothpaste you don't really need.
  
  

  Once you are in
  

  
  Don't forget you are going to have to buy things you forgot about or that just come up those first few weeks. Somehow you will move in and realize you don't have a mop, or a kitchen trashcan, or about 50 other things that just happened to be your roommates, or where the hell is the dish detergent and oh fuck I forgot that I need toilet paper and I ran out two days ago.
  
  I try to set aside about $100-$200 for these weird incidentals. If you are worried about running low buy stuff at the dollar store, you can get a better version next paycheck. Also if you are low on dishes this a great place to get some that are honestly perfectly fine. Big lots is also good for cheap dishes. Also not a bad idea to plan for the money to eat out a few days during the move when you normally wouldn't. For me its the one time I let myself have fast food.
  
  Once you are moved in, be careful about your grocery bill if previously you were splitting groceries and not just buying your own. Buying for one is very different than buying for two, easier for things to go bad in your fridge.
  
  

  Utilities/Bills
  

  
  There will be deposits and unexpected service fees. When you set up your accounts ask specifically what will be on the first bill other than normal recurring charges. Do not think the bills will somehow be half of what you used before. Use A/C or heat sparingly until you see a couple bills. Replace all your lightbulbs with LEDs. Shop around to make sure you buy the cheaper ones they work just as well and they will save you a fortune on electric.
  
  Buy a programmable thermostat if your unit doesn't already have one. They are easy to install yourself, will save you a lot of money buy avoiding running the heat/air while you aren't home, and are only about $40 on Amazon.
  
  You need internet, you do not need cable. You do not need the fancy internet plan the company wants to sell you. Start with the lowest tier internet plan and buy Hulu or Netflix or maybe both. If you have streaming issues upgrade the internet later. When you set up cable request that you not be on a contract (cancelation fees when you move and don't want it are a bitch).

I have some first-hand experience sleeping on something similar.


I wanted a bed that looks/functions like OP's (held together by friction and gravity, easy to take apart and move), but lack the woodworking skills to make one like I wanted.

Saw an ad on craigslist where the guy was selling a dresser, but had a frame that looked like the one I wanted in his room. Sent him an e-mail asking where he got it. Said he made it. Woo Hoo! Asked if he would be willing to make another, and what my cost would be. He quoted me $150 in lumber, $150 in labor, would have to use screws. I said, "yup!"

Went to get it and it looked okay. Wish he'd picked a bit better lumber (couple-a-flaws), but okay. It has 2x6s as the side support beams, 4x4s as the legs, five 2x4 supports running along the inside as weight supports, and a couple pieces of plywood on top for the mattress to rest on. (I live in a dry/arid area: our mattresses don't get moldy on a flat surface.) All this stuff is just screwed together. King-sized bed.

He said: "You're not going to be doing circus acts on it, are you?" Well, duh. That's what beds are for, right? But anyway, it's all good. It was the aesthetic I was looking for, and I thought it'd be sturdy enough.

So I get it home and screw it together. Okay. I sleep on it. Okay. I ask some friends to try it out. Too wobbly, they say. Bad design. So I trotted over to home depot and got eight, 4" metal L brackets to screw each side support to each leg on each side. Much sturdier. Okay.

Slept on for about 3 years. Okay! Love the aesthetic. Had it specially made 18" clearance from floor. Love the height.

Getting off one morning, one of the side pieces snaps in half. There was a knot in that piece of wood that gave way.

Boooo!

So, in seeing where it broke, I can see a fix. First, use great lumber. But also: the five 2x4s that are the weight support are just screwed into the 2x6s. What would've worked hella better is to do that if needed, but also make a rail below for them to rest on that's attached to the 2x6. Exponentially increases the strength of the 2x6 and better distributes the weight along it.

It broke a few months ago. It's on my list of stuff to do: shore-up bed. But in the meanwhile, I got this metal frame off amazon... it was SUPER easy to unfold and slide under, and gives the poor, sagging frame the support to get by until I can fix it.

I hate the aesthetics of the new frame, but it was a great price and SO easy to set up, so light-weight to move. Glad I got it, as it will store well (if I ever get around to fixing my bedframe) and is super easy to move/drag out... great port-a-bed.


tldr: My experience with a similar-but-different bed design is that it's not really sturdy enough.

I actually ordered a 3" gel topper because of the firmness (you sleep on top rather than sinking into it), but that proved to be too squishy (the topper leaves an imprint of your body when you roll). I have a 2" topper on another bed & imo that is the right level of squish vs. firmness: (the bed is firm to the point where my side wasn't sinking in & was kind of being compressed instead, like when you lay on thin carpet when watching TV or something)

Slightly better than the Amazon Basics sheets I have on another bed. I have a plastic bin underneath the bed for storing a spare set of sheets & waterproof sheet (both are washer/dryer-safe). Total comes up to under $600 shipped for a 12" memory foam bed, 2" gel topper, 18" metal bed frame, a non-skid pad for the frame, two sets of sheets, and two waterproof mattress sheets. I was going to get a Casper or Leesa, but those were like $800 just for the bed...I got all that for $200 less, still a pretty hefty investment, but a decent deal. Other than that, you just need some pillows & a duvet or blanket on the top.

The mattress comes vacuum-sealed in a box, so you just undo it from the packaging & let it air out for a day or two to fully decompress. The frame comes in a large but thin box (two frames folded in half with some assembly hardware). I didn't have to mooch a truck off a friend or go to a mattress store or anything...ordered it all off Amazon Prime, showed up in a couple days, put it all together by myself in minutes. Easy peasy. Would definitely order another one!

In terms of affordability it really is hard to go wrong with online. There are several great options to purchase inexpensive, but super high quality mattresses online.

I just bought a mattress online myself, ended up going with the Leesa. But here are all of the choices I looked at:

Leesa - $890 for queen, neutral firmness, uses Avena foam (similar, but better than latex), has memory foam middle layer, cool design, great price (really cool company too, they give back lots of the community)

Casper - $840 for queen, supposed to be a bit softer then the Leesa, uses latex and memory foam

Tuft & Needle - $600 for queen, one of the cheapest options I found, but also seems to be firmer. If you like firmer could be a good fit.

Yogabed - $899 for queen, similar to the Leesa in may ways, has some cool extras, a few unknowns in terms of the foams they use though

Saatva - $899 for queen, the one online innerspring mattress I found, great option if you really want innerspring. Has a euro-style pillow top, not sure how that would feel though.

Nature's Sleep - ranging prices $800-$1300 for a queen, a more traditional retailer, but had some interesting stuff, especially if you're looking 100% memory foam

For your frame there are a few different options. My wife and I had a platform bed already, so that's what we are using. It was around $600.

IKEA is always an option for cheap with a pretty good number of options. Also, there is this metal box spring / frame option available on Amazon. Hard to beat the price on that.

I've enjoyed reading through everyone's responses and have added a ton of things to my cart/wishlist...

Amazon is my go-to for pretty much everything --- phone cases, screen protectors, batteries, cat food, random household things. Off the top of my head, my favorites:

• Lightning/micro-USB charging cable. I love that it can flip between the two charging ports; I can use one cable for my iPhone and Kindle, finally! We've replaced all of our electronic cables with these.
  
• My Kindle Voyage. Love, love, love it! It's always with me.
  
• Zinus SmartBase mattress frame. Sturdy, quiet, and super tall for underbed storage. Enough said!
  
• Packing cubes. These are soft-sided packing cubes, which is great for me since I can cram more things into them. I get so much more suitcase space back, and it helps keep things organized once I'm at a hotel.
  
• Stainless steel sink caddy. Sponges left in the sink drive me crazy! I like this one because it also has stands for scrubber brushes and the coordinating soap dispenser (which I also bought) fits nicely in the compartment.
  
• Programmable cat feeder. We've tried so, so many automatic feeders for our cats. The feeders either crap out or the cats figure out how to get it to dispense extra food. This one though --- it's been going strong for 2.5 years and the little jerkbags can't get their paws up the food chute; not that it matters, because portions are on a conveyor belt inside the feeder. You can set multiple feeding times, adjust portions for each meal, and it's super easy to refill thanks to the lid on top. We have a power adapter for it... the manufacturer didn't have the factory one listed at the time (it's separate) so we got a generic multi-purpose one that works.

I have one. I was extremely skeptical because I'm really picky about mattresses, but my partner had heard good things, and we needed one, so we got one. We've had it for about 2 months.

A large part of the reason I'm picky is that my body is very curvy (wide hips, big ass, small waist), so I need a mattress that is squishy enough to accommodate that and yet somehow also supportive. I am normally a stomach sleeper and/or roll around all night trying to get comfortable, but I find that I mostly fall asleep and wake up on my back now. That's pretty amazing in itself.

Overall, I would recommend it. They have a good return/refund policy. They offer a free squishy addon pad if after a month or so you still feel like it's not soft enough. I have also read that showroom perception of mattresses generally doesn't have any correlation with longterm satisfaction. Basically, I can vouch for the fact that the Casper probably won't hurt you, and it will last longer than a spring mattress at an equivalent price.

For me, it's not the kind of mattress that I associate with "luxury". I don't sink into it like I'm laying on a cloud. But that's not good for your back anyway. It's more that it's just consistently supportive. I don't wake up in pain. And, best of all, I didn't have to go to a showroom and lay on a bunch of mattresses and get hassled/hustled by a salesperson gunning for a commission. We ordered it online while we were moving and it was delivered directly to the new place. I lay on it and it doesn't hurt me. So it checks all the boxes for me.

[Edit] Btw, we have it on one of these basic wire bed frames. Many reviewers also have a Casper and they say it works fine. So I don't think it matters that much what you put it on.

I read you already bought yours, but I want to put in my thoughts anyways in case anybody else is looking at these or you change your mind. I live with a buddy of mine for the time being and he bought one of those memory foam beds for his daughter (4). The bed is ok, obviously you can't expect the world from a <500 bed but its a good bed for what it is. I slept on it for about 3-5 months can't remember and I don't remember having any issues.

I decided I wanted my own bed, and so I went to Costco and looked around at their selection they had in the back aisles on the wall. There were about 15 beds they had in bags lying longways like you'd see clothes in a closet. Well, I found a gel top foam mattress for about $500 I think it was. It is by far the best bed I've ever slept on, and my friend has some kind of expensive foam mattress over $1000 and I like it better than his. The brand is Sleep Innovations, which I think is the same type of one as those beds.

It's got the gel on top then the egg crate looking thing and THEN the regular bed. OMG, when I brought it home after buying some of those $80 Jennifer Adams sheet sets in queen size, and the AMAZING BLANKETS for $15 ( I bought) I was so giddy and squirreling around in my bed my friend thought there was something wrong with me. It was literally comfort overload.

The bed came in a box, all rolled up and you just flop it out of the box onto the ground and it sucks up air until it "inflates" I guess. It smells for a day or so then it's great. I love my bed. I bought a frame to go under it so I have extra storage and foam mattresses like to sweat which causes mildew under the bed (found that out the hard way with another foam mattress).

I also bought the foam pillows from costco as well, I think it was 2 pillows for $20 or $10 or something I can't remember. I LOVE COSTCO!!!!!!!!

Speaking as someone who lives in a small SF studio apt...

In addition to your excellent recommendation on varied sizes of containers, I have this 100 clear ziplock bags set as well as a variety of larger bags in varying sizes. So if I've got something with little accessories, I'll toss those accessories in tiny ziplock bags, then put them in a larger ziplock bag shared with the main item when I store it on a shelf or a container. For example, I do this with my medicine cabinet / toiletries. I organize stuff into ziplock bags by function ("sinus / cold", painkillers, GI, etc) and then toss them in the closet in a small box, to avoid clutter in my cramped bathroom and keep only things I use routinely close at hand.

I've got a couple little tupperware boxes like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F03L98 which I put labels on and stack in my closet. Plus I've got an old shoebox or two for knicknacks.

In my small pantry, I've got these little DecoBros Expandable Stackable Kitchen Cabinet and Counter Shelf Organizer to maximize vertical space.

I put my seasonal clothing into space saver "packing cube" compression bags.

Some of my cleaning and organizing is motivated by dust mite allergies - but ultimately I'm working on a long-term solution to that. So I'm getting immunotherapy to become resistant to allergens and also use a dehumidifier to kill the dust mites.

I also keep an inventory of the items that I really liked. If I bought it retail, I'll find it online. That way, I can sell or junk something with the peace of mind that I can buy it again when I need it.

I do the typical things to minimize possessions: I have a few merino wool items that I wear most often, have a single bankers box for files with almost nothing it it (scan), no desktop computer, store very few physical books, and so on.

For my sleeping area, I use this cheap Zinus frame and store a bunch of stuff under it. That gives me extra storage and it's also cheap and easy to replace I do a long move. For my bed itself, I use a Sleep Number bed - it's easy to pack it into the back of a sedan, and you can customize the firmness to get to the "medium-firm" which clinical trials have demonstrated to be the best.

My desk/dining table is public white 42" high dining table which allows me to stand if I want; these 29.5" Bar Stool fit and store nicely.

On the digital front, I have a very hefty dotfiles repo, use https://github.com/GothenburgBitFactory/taskwarrior for tasks, and have finally transitioned pretty much all my finances to the double-entry beancount leveraging https://github.com/beancount/fava (after trying the earlier ledger/hledger tools).

As an additional aside to amend this:
Our IKEA mattress support after eight years of vigorous use (plus I’m a pretty big guy) developed a crack in one of the wooden mattress supports. We really loved the frame and didn’t know what to do. We ended up getting a ZINUS Mattress support that fit perfectly inside our IKEA outer bed frame. It is extremely sturdy, unbelievably easy to assemble, holds up to 1100 pounds and wasn’t terribly expensive. Obviously, every frame/mattress size has its own corresponding ZINUS product we simply adore the king-size one that we got. The link below will indicate what we bought. It does not require a Bunkie board or plywood to support our mattress.

I despise big bulky bed frames. When I was deciding if I was okay with floor sleeping I started sleeping on the floor to see if it was comfortable. I did this for a while and made my decision about getting rid of the bed. I found that I'm comfortable floor sleeping if there's carpet but not if it's hard flooring. You also want to take into account if you are comfortable having sex on the floor, possibly having company stay over, or relaxing on the floor as well. In the end I did keep my bed, and I went with a sturdy, but very practical bed frame. This frame doesn't require a box, and it folds for easy moving. I paired it with a foam hybrid mattress that's easy to move when i move. The frame is definitely not necessary if you live in a house, but I got it for my cargo van. We receive this question a lot and there are many ways to adjust your Ikea bed frame to work with Spindle's heavy latex. below is the information and here is the link to the article on Spindle's website, Supporting a Spindle with an IKEA bed frame.

Your on the right track with wanting to by new slats as well. Here is our recommendation on the specs for the slats, as well as the link. Proper support for a Spindle Mattress

• Slats of solid wood, no less than 3/4” thick 1x3 lumber works great -- Oak, Fir, Birch, Tulip, Poplar, etc...doesn't matter -- just NOT ply- or fabricated wood
  
• Slats spaced no more than 3” apart. Skimping can damage your Spindle
  
• Center support[s] under slats with legs to the floor
  
• Plywood is not recommended. It may flex; also can lead to mold/mildew
  
  Most IKEA frames will not offer enough support for a Spindle. Fortunately, the critical mass of IKEA customers has provided a robust hacker community and their DIY solutions can be found by exploring Google Images, YouTube or Pinterest.
  
  This YouTube video highlights one of the shortfalls and demonstrates one way to fix it.
  
  There are many other postings online with pointers on how to add support to your IKEA bed.
  
  DIY Bed Frame for $10 shows a basic solution.Reinforcing an Ikea Bed gets a bit more sophisticatedIkea makes Sultan, a leg for their center beam. You may be able to modify it to work with your bed.Bedclaw makes an adjustable height leg specifically for this type of application
  
  To reinforce your IKEA frame, the minimum modifications we’d recommend are:
  
  
• Use solid slats [just get 1×3 from lumber yard or Home Depot, et al], or buy a slat kit like this one.
  
• Add support legs to underside of center beam [we recommend using at least 2]
  
• Add support beams with legs: Universal Bed Slats Center Support System Adjustable Tubular Steel with 4 Legs

I am requesting a loan of $110 to buy a bed frame. My mattress is currently on the floor and with the cold weather and winter coming, I need to get my bed off the floor and away from the wall (with headboard). I get sick very easily, especially in the winter, so this is important. The one I'm getting I also need for storage space, as it's 18 inches and my room is small so I don't have much space for anything.

Sure thing! If you do end up going with Christeli, awesome. If not, all good. I think the main thing is to find a sleeping arrangement that lends you both to be able to sleep soundly. So although Christeli mattresses have been the best mattresses we have ever had, the price point is not practical for some people. I am certain that even if we bought different mattresses that we felt were comfortable (but happened to be less expensive), we would still be getting great sleep. So maybe the quality can vary or some people get duds, but we have this zinus frame and we have loved it. It’s been esp great since we are renters that move occasionally, often in older homes where the stairs can limit what goes up them. We’ve never had squeaking. Put a bed skirt on it and storage tubs for out of season clothes and extra bedding.

We were tight on funds then and still are. I imagine someday we will upgrade to something prettier, but maybe not until we have our permanent home. I’ve thought about finding a headboard I liked to add to it. For now it’s been pretty practical.

I did look at the Eco sleep but I don't think it's all natural Talalay and we liked the CombiZone coils which are an upgrade from the uniform coils of the Eco Sleep. We figured if we were going to spend on a mattress, we might as well drop two hundred more and get a better mattress. You can definitely feel the zoned coils.

I highly, highly recommend this mattress foundation. I move pretty frequently and have zero storage space and this is a great solution for both of those problems.

I used to have a really heavy and large wooden futon frame, which was pretty squeaky and unnecessarily difficult to set up but I ended up buying this model off Craigslist and I'm never going back. It's pretty easy to set up, very sturdy, and it makes no noise. And the best part is that the frame itself is pretty light and compact once you break it down so it makes moving it from place to place way easier.

No opinion on the Ikea mattresses, and I'm not sure if this option will work for you, but I slept on this mattress for over two years and never had a bad nights sleep nor notice anything go bad. I prefer harder beds, but that one was still super comfortable (everyone loved it).
you WILL sink into this one, but still be very supported. I never felt like the mattress got overly warm, but I was in SF at the time so that probably limited how hot it could get. You don't need a foundation with that bed, so you could always get one of these.

After I moved I gave it to a friend and he thoroughly enjoys it.

2 pieces and it folds so you can easily carry it up stairs (18lbs each). Folded up it can fit in the back of a sedan if you are moving.
Pretty solid i dont hear any squeaks or anything from it.

Cons:
High chance you will pinch your fingers while putting it together.
It looks like something you would find in a prison/barracks. I highly suggest a $10 bed skirt.
You can stub your toe on the center leg pretty easy. Throw some pipe insulation on it under the bed skirt to save your toes.

this is the one I have, which is squishier, but some of that is also our different frame.

One is cheaper than the other, and has a 10 year warranty instead of 25. They are both nice, I would just make the call based on preference of soft and firm. They come in a box, and you have to leave them out for at least a day so the foam can uncompress. Neither of us had any issue with it smelling. It has a smell because its new, but disappears in a day or two.

stay away from the handy living wood slat frame, the wood doesn't last, especially if you are um....persistent in the bedroom. My friend bought this one, and we both agree it is better.


both have good clearance, so you can store stuff under the bed. If you don't have the 100ish extra, you can always save and just sit the mattress on the ground until you can afford it.

Honestly, a full size bed would be perfectly adequate for two, if a bit cozy. It would also buy you a little extra room when every inch counts. I'd recommend a frame like this one that would allow storage underneath. It squeaks a bit and it's definitely barebones, but it's affordable and can fold up easy for moving. I own one in a queen size and have a very small room as well.

As for the rest of the room, get a tape measure and a notepad and measure the footprints of everything in the room so you can draw a plan view of the room and play around with configurations. If casual seating is a must, I would get rid of the couch and instead get a nicer futon frame in full size that can perform double-duty.

WIth a space this size, it's all about finding multi-functional pieces and things that can be broken down quickly and tucked out of the way.

I recently bought a new bed, and I looked through this site to determine what would be best. I ended up going with a latex mattress. I'm pretty satisfied with it. The frame depends on what type of mattress you're getting. You'll probably want a frame and box spring for an innerspring mattress, but everything else just needs a foundation. Also, be sure to get a waterproof mattress cover to protect your mattress.

My newest ideas to build my own bed frame by creating a vinyl coated aircraft cable mesh. I can't find anyone else online who has tried it, so it makes me more excited to do it. If it works I'll have to post pictures to Pinterest.

After beginning to measure my 4th gen for a sleeping platform I realized I recognized the measurements... Because they were the size of a twin bed! There is 14in of storage underneath currently, however I will also be cutting down the legs to allow for more headroom. This is a great option for someone lacking woodworking skills or time! I put an exped megamat duo on mine, but it will obviously fit a twin foam or air mattress.

I had a bed that sat on something like this at one point in time. It was pretty nice, but then again, it also had a box spring. So, YMMV.

I also bought one of those memory foam mattress toppers recently and it's pretty much the best thing ever.

You should look at exactly what is supporting the bed right now. There should be at least a couple center supports holding up the middle of the bed. If those are missing or broken you just need to figure out how to prop it back up again.

Being there is no boxspring you probably have lots of slats under the mattress and as long as they are not broken or warped beyond repair, beefing up your center support should be sufficient to make thing stable again. Worst case scenario, beef up the center supports and get a couple pieces of 3/4" plywood to put across for support as well. Just make sure it is evenly supported on the sides and center. Beyond that its tough to say without actually seeing what is going on under the bed. Your mattress may or may not be ruined, just really depends on how bad it was and how long it was like that. Get your foundation right and go from there.

Yeah, mobile homes are friggin expensive. Sounds good, take care of that van like it's your life blood. Keep the tires inflated so they don't wear out quickly. Check/change the transmission fluid, rear diff fluid, and coolant if you don't know when it was done last. Most people skimp on this.
I'd recommend getting a pistol or a taser pulse and some FOX brand pepper spray just so you don't have to worry about anything. I tell this to everyone, male or female. Things that everyone should have close by in my opinion. I'd avoid making the van look girly on the inside (no pink or purple curtains) for security reasons)
For the van, if you plan on living with him in there, you're going to need a big sturdy bed. I would buy a metal frame so that you have storage space underneath. Like this

You've gotten some good tips about the plywood, but you could also consider getting a metal foundation to fit inside the frame you buy, and skip the wooden slats. I did this with my bed; the metal foundation fits perfectly inside the wooden bed frame, and you don't even see the legs on the sides. Bonus: no creaking!

You absolutely do not need the Casper foundation specifically for the Casper mattress, the foundations are all pretty similar. These look marked up a lot, even compared to traditional retail.

Check Casper's latest terms to see what restrictions (if any) they have on the mattress return policy (visible damage and not using a foundation typically invalidates the warranty / return policy of a few bed in a box offerings). They might specify slats or something like that.

The foundation you choose will affect the feel of the mattress to some extent, but not a lot. The main thing you can do with the foundation to make the whole experience a bit firmer (if you end up wanting that) is to build or buy a bunkie board (which is basically just a sheet of plywood between the mattress and the foundation).

And if it's not obvious, huge gaps in the slats are going to cause some wear and tear on the mattress. For example, a 4"-6" gap is fine (12" is not).

I bought a $110 metal frame from Amazon for my new serta memory foam mattress. It hasn't arrived yet, but it has thousands of great reviews, so I figure it is a pretty good bet. No foundation is required with this type of frame. Link

Look into the Tuft & Needle mattresses. They're CRAZY comfortable and super affordable. My husband did a ton of research and used Consumer Reports and this is one of the highest rated mattresses they tested. We got ours right around when I got my BFP and I love it to pieces. The cool thing is they vacuum seal it in plastic and ship it to your house for free (in the US at least), so you don't have to worry about delivery or anything. And you don't need to use a box spring with it, so you can get a tall bed frame and have all this storage underneath. I seriously can't recommend this mattress enough.

Traditional beds have a mattress sitting on top of a box spring (a mattress sized wooden frame with springs in it) which in turn sits on top of a bedframe (typically made of wood or metal).

An alternative to this, is to get a bedframe that has wood or metal planks ("slats") going across the frame. They perform the role of the box-spring while contributing significantly less bulk. In North America, these are most popular at Ikea--it's a sort of European approach. Here's a low slatted frame on Amazon. Here's IKEA's slatted bed base category--in IKEA most of their frames can use a slatted base.

If you search the /r/minimalism for sleeping stuff you'll see that a lot of the more dedicated minimal people here use Japanese-style sleeping futons, relatively thin memory foam mattresses, and people here with actual bed-frames often forego a box spring or use a slatted base.

I live in a major US city and storage space is at a premium for me. I also wanted to make my place look 'normal' e.g. not advertise my preparedness to guests. What I did is replace my box spring and bed stand with a platform bed to create discrete under the bed storage for lots of food, water, and gear. I keep my BoB, several 7 gallon Reliance Aquatainers filled with water, several 5 gallon buckets with gamma lids for food (a mix of bulk grains, dehydrated meals, and ready to eat snacks), and several Roughneck plastic totes (portable power, medical supplies, cleaning and toiletry supplies, extras from building my Bob, tools, etc) under there, with room for more. Easily 2 weeks worth of preps readily accessible, well organized, and out of sight behind a bed skirt in what looks like a regular bedroom. Kind of a small point, I know, but it has helped tremendously for keeping track of my preps and providing a little peace of mind, in my case.

Quality was awesome and it's better than the bed we're using ourselves at more than 3x the price.

I got this mattress and this frame along with this mattress protector. I've been happy so far and I am sleeping better than before. I have lower back issues and need good support. This is a firm mattress and it takes a couple minutes for you to sink in, especially the first month. After the first month or so it does not take as long for the foam to shape to you.

I'm pretty big so we got the extra sturdy, can hold like +1000 lbs bed. It's great, no complaints. Hasn't broke and doesn't make a lot noise.

I grew up sleeping on futons and mattresses on the floor, so I agree they're comfortable. But having to air them out, leave them in the sun, store nothing underneath, etc. turns out to not really be that minimalist (especially with your time). Get this minimalist bedframe and this minimalist foam mattress in whatever size you need. Feels like a futon without all the disadvantages.

The bedframe is particularly nice because it's all metal, so doesn't wear out like other platform beds that use wooden slats like IKEA's. I had to wrap the corners with duct tape because I keep banging my shins into them.

I am a big fan of my Zinus storage bed frame. Very solid, no squeaks after almost 2 years, and the extra height/no box spring is great. I bought mine on the recommendation of a friend, she and her husband have had theirs for a year or two longer than I have and have not had issues either.

I just bought a king sized bed along with a king sized heavy 200lb latex mattress. I myself weigh 225lbs and the manufacturer told me the bed could support 600 lbs+ easily. Last night while having sex on it it already came close to breaking, luckily we stopped in time. The two middle support beam legs slid out from under the bed. I don't think there is permanent damage but it definitely was scary and it killed the mood. I haven't even had the bed for an entire week yet!

The entire bed frame is a custom made solid wood bed with metal on metal construction. There is six legs total, four corner legs and the two legs for the two center beams. Quite frankly though, I feel they don't give enough support to the middle of the bed. The two center rails are 1" x 2"s. The middle legs seem to slip out all the time despite me using as much strength as possible to adjust the feet. It doesn't seem well designed.

How can I go about reinforcing it a bit and making it reliable for sex? Would it be good to put a 1x4 or a 2x4 between the two legs so they don't slide out? Should I put some of these heavy duty 2,000lb levelers on the sides of each center support leg to give it some side to side resistance?

I'm also thinking of running a few 1x4s or 2x4s between the two center rails then attaching these legs.

What is your thoughts? How would you go about reinforcing my bed?

easy to assemble, quiet, and plenty of room for storage underneath. it's not hard and not soft, it's perfect and it holds it's shape and is very comfortable. i'm also a side sleeper and i have chronic lower-back problems.

I have the queen T&N and I like it just fine. It starts out very firm, but will soften up after a few months. I also have a latex topper that I got off Amazon that softens up the feel of the top.

I got this plain box for it for now because it was cheap. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to something made of wood so it looks a bit nicer.

I got one of these used for dirt cheap but I would have zero issue paying full price, it's been excellent. Great storage underneath and no squeaking or movement.

I'm assuming you don't care about the mattress lasting for years, you just need something for your final year of school, correct? At that price range you definitely shouldn't expect the mattress to last more than a year (it might but just don't expect it to). There are some cheap mattresses on Amazon such as LUCID and Zinus. They have a lot of good reviews but be wary since there are tons of fake (paid for) reviews on Amazon. Pretty much what you want to aim for is just something that's better than sleeping on the floor. College dorm mattresses are generally pretty horrible, so it is what it is. People still make it through college alright even with those awful mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you want a platform bed frame. Here's a lower cost one from Zinus.

For example, that couch also rearranges into the exact size for a [queen sized mattress]( Signature Sleep Contour 8-Inch Mattress) to lay on top except for one missing corner, which is exactly the height of the coffee table. I can also fit a queen sized bed where the bar stools go. When my sister and her friend visited, they each got their own queen bed. One of those beds is stored in the closet.

I think you could rotate the bed. Put the head of the bed at the window and push it to one of the walls. Either 1. push it to the left wall and put the desk between the end of the bed and the dresser along the wall, or 2. push it to the right wall and put the desk at the foot of the bed, like this.

If you can, I would also get a taller bed frame so you can store more underneath it. I just got this one. The quality is great and there is SO MUCH storage underneath. There's also cheaper, but still well reviewed options, like this one.

It depends on what type of break occurred. Was it straight down, through slats, or did the bed break at corners? Additional legs may help. I would have used 2x4s!

It may be unnecessary to buy a new bed, depending on the damage and your preferences. Is it possible to buy a standard bed frame and set it up inside the old bed? You may need to connect things with brackets or wood blocks to get it to fit together.

Alternatively, is it possible to fit a standard bed frame into either of the new beds? If one needs to be a platform bed, you could use 2 sheets of 1/2" or 3/4" ply cut to size (e.g., 2 30" x 80" pieces for a queen bed). I'd put a strip of rubber matting (like a door mat) between the two pieces to reduce squeaking; if that doesn't work, use a scrap piece of the ply to join them, using glue and screws on the underside.

Slats make the bed springier, and usually more comfortable. Reinforcing a few of the slats may help, or adding additional slats, either thicker slats or more, spaced closely.

So I’m my anchor partner and I are both strongman competitors, she’s 6’ 1”, between 230-240 depending on where we are in a season and I’m 5’ 10” generally right around 260-280.

So just the two of us are right 550 usually.

I bought a Tuft & Needle queen a couple months ago with a folding, metal bed frame. The mattress was only $600 and the frame about $100. It's easily the best best mattress I've ever slept on. No more sore upper back. The bed frame isn't particularly stylish though.

If I were doing a 5 day build, I'd skip insulation. I was in a van this summer that I had insulated with polyiso, and when it was cold outside, it was cold inside the van, and when it was hot outside, it was super hot inside the van. I never got my electrical hooked up either, so I'd skip that too. Bought a 50,000 mAh battery bank. Never really used it. I did use a long 12v extension with a splitter to charge my phone, run a fan, etc.

I'd probably put down subfloor, that's cheapish and a one day project.

For the bed, I bought this frame for $60 and this memory foam mattress, but you could probably get a cheaper twin mattress. The nice thing about the bed frame is that you can store plenty of stuff underneath it in storage totes.

I love the Zinus brand off Amazon. I have their black metal bedframe and it's survived a few moves from me with zero problems. It's crazy cheap, but very stable/sturdy. I'm really impressed that after being disassembled and reassembled a few times, it's still completely sturdy with no sway/give. I consider it one of my random "cheap-but-randomly-bifl" purchases.

I can't speak to the upholstered versions, but I like my decor clean/modern, so it really works for that.

This sounds a lot like the first house my husband and I rented together. I don't have experience sleeping on a thin mattress on the floor, but we have a latex foam mattress with a zippered casing that can be cleaned (not at home) or replaced if ever needed. We've had this mattress for about 7 years and it seems like it could last forever. Even if the softest layer of foam eventually broke down, we could easily replace just that layer with a new one. My only "regret" is that I bought the most expensive model with 4 layers of foam. I now know I really didn't need 4 layers and maybe wouldn't have needed more than 2. It was fairly expensive but not absurdly so ($2500), but if it lasts my lifetime, then that seems like a deal. Came with 2 pillows too.

This doesn't look sturdy at all.

The thin slats and the hollow steel frame won't survive long, especially with heavier people. Also, while the slats are interchangeable, the frame can't be repaired if it bends.

The reviews are not very flattering either, mostly from people complaining that you can't have sex on it or it breaks.

Edit: The same brand has the Zinus 14 Inch Elite SmartBase Mattress Foundation, for Big & Tall, Extra Strong Support, Platform Bed Frame which looks to be pretty durable. Have to buy a mattress separately though.

Futons tend to be uncomfortable. I think your best bet is getting a basic bed frame with storage underneath. It has an optional attachment thing for a headboard. I really like my Casper mattress.

I recently built a murphy bed and would recommend that you use a kit that has the end legs like this (https://www.amazon.com/Queen-Size-Deluxe-Murphy-Bed-Vertical/dp/B00CYPV29W). I did not and it is a lot more work and does not look as nice.

For the color i recently built a vanity with solid birch and also have cabinets that are birch. It tends to have knots and it's natural finished look is very similar to hickory so getting a clean look like this with solid birch rail and stiles might be tough. You could probably get some cherry plywood and some Cherry stick on edge banding and that would provide you with the look from the picture.

• If you're buying your bedroom furniture from a store with pushy salespeople, you are probably going to be paying too much.

• If you still want to buy durable, real-wood furniture that will last you through several future moves, Craigslist is your friend. So are secondhand stores, the classifieds section of your local newspaper, and the community bulletin board at the grocery store. You can get heirloom-quality furniture for a fraction of the store prices. A lot of what's out there is outdated or will need to be refinished eventually, but there's plenty to pick from.

It's of course much more basic but I'm attracted to it because it's simple and maybe more versatile in that I can change the look with pillows etc much easier since there's no headboard.

We have one! We live in a 700sq ft 2 bed apartment and we put the Murphy bed in 3 years ago when I started working from home. My office is also the guest room. We bought one of the kits that provides all the instructions and hardware and cut the wood ourselves.

A couple of notes:
It def did not destroy the wall.
It has changed the way we use the space, in such a positive way.
The precision of the cuts was REALLY important.
And having enough space to cut, and assemble the bed was a challenge.
The legs provided in the kit are garbage- we don’t use them- we made alternatives

For less than $272, you'd have a pretty good setup for an apartment.

You want a mattress to be able to breathe, so plywood wouldn't be too good, and more slats wouldn't add all that much more support. A support down the middle would be easiest, but legs like that can get skewed over time and lead to badness.

You could use a 2x4, short side up, and a leg that's stabilized so it won't move out from under the 2x4. You can actually buy these, but you could make a much beefier one out of 2x2. I can go into detail on that if that's the way you want to go.

Another way to go would be to add 1x2 to each slat, oriented vertically so it makes a t shape, and add blocks between the 1x2s to tie them all together for weight distribution.

I bought this thing as a frame for my memory foam mattress, and it supports me(300lbs) and the mattress just fine, I totally recommend it as a frame for anyone who's looking. I can throw myself on it and it doesn't even budge.

We went with a Purple mattress a few months ago. Tried to order one of their foundations to go with it but a month after ordering and receiving the mattress and at least another month wait for their foundation, we gave up and ordered this one from Amazon.

It pretty much just folds out of the box and you screw some nuts on to lock the two pieces together, couldn't be easier and has worked great, no squeaking or anything.

It's pretty amazing for the price and there's only a few bolts to even squeak. The bed it replaced had like 50 bolts and screws and drove me insane.

I'm not a fan of collapsible metal frames so I am probably not the best person to ask. I prefer solid wood frames, with wood slats.

But since you did ask, I would not get the one you referenced. I do not like those wire-thin supports at all. I imagine they will slowly cut indentations into the foam base of the mattress. Even so, the spaces between the metal bars are wide, more than 5-inch I think. I suggest either taking the cardboard box the frame comes in and covering over the surface of the bed frame with cardboard, or else get some hardboard or pegboard from Home Depot to cover the frame with (try to get something that does not have any formaldehyde in it)

Not everybody wants a wood frame. I use a metal platform under a standard mattress. It's lightweight and holds up to 700 pounds, and moves quickly and easily, it folds for shipping and arrived in one box weighing about 35 to 40 pounds. I got mine for under $100. I got rid of my box springs, and later will replace the mattress with memory foam mattress. What I like about this platform is there is 12" legs and this is more than enough storage area under the bed. I put it together with a screwdriver.

A 4 feels like a truck rumbling by if you are 20-30 miles away. You could have experienced quite a few and not known it. Up close to the epicenter, it can be a wavy feeling that can transform to giant rocking sensations, and you should seek cover.

So, bed frames meant to attach a headboard, have 2 flat brackets to attach a headboard. Since you have baseboard heat, you want any flammable materials 8 inches away from the heating unit. This also allows proper airflow so it can actually heat the room.

I recommend these because when I used mattress covers for my boxspring, the abrasion between it and my bedframe caused rips and tears that rendered them useless. These puppies are a great (and cheap) alternative.

A bedframe that folds up flat and comes in various sizes.

A mattress that folds up rather compactly, can be used as seating, and comes in various sizes. Can be padded with a mattress pad and blankets.

Still too much? Get a Japanese style futon.

A desk that can be folded down flat. As a single person, I often eat at my desk.

Or if you don't like to eat at your desk, a collapsible small personal table...just sit on your bed.

I understand the desire to not have much of anything because it's a pain to move, but there's a point where it gets ridiculous. There are ways around it. Yeah, having sex on the floor is better than no sex at all, but I won't be having any sex if I don't get a good night's sleep, and I certainly need at least a few inches of padding more than a yoga mat provides.

Another vote for Zinus, but in a different flavor. Zinus Elite Mattress Foundation. We have three of these, and they're solid. They're foldable, and they assemble in minutes with zero tools.

So, they look a little like this, which is actually the bed frame we have (coz we wanted something tall enough to slide Rubbermaid totes under), and I can tell you that occasionally one of the metal slats will slide out of the holders, but it’s fixable with a little effort. My parents have this one in their guest room (actually in 2 guest rooms in 2 different states, heh), which is all one piece, but looks slightly different than the ones I’ve noticed lately on the show. I had a wooden slatted futon when I was in college, and yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. My college bf got a little, ahem, cray once and basically put his knee through a couple of the slats, so I couldn’t imagine them having standard wooden box springs for long. A former friend of mine (who I’ve mentioned in this thread before) was (is) v large (400+lbs) and married someone who is just as large or larger than she is and they had to build a special bed frame for themselves out of 2x4’s, because previous ones had failed them at, uh...inopportune moments, shall we say. She also told me about how they deal with excess skin flaps during sex and sometimes that memory crosses my mind and I wanna die.

A metal bed frame, something like this is just a couple collapsible pieces of metal that fold up really small and will elevate your bed a few inches off the ground. You will need a box spring, or some other platform for the mattress to rest on

I have the mattress directly on the frame with a sheet over the frame to protect the underside of the mattress - I'm paranoid that way. I like lower to the ground - I've noticed the high mattresses are no longer fashionable. The trend is to scandahoovian-style very low mattresses.

With the 8" mattress and frame, you'll be about 30" above the floor. There is storage space under the frame too, large enough for boxes - these frames are higher than the standard mattress frame you use with a boxspring.

Get a metal frame that sits up high. Put stuff you own under it, in a closet (clothes in a hanging dresser) or on an end table. Throw out everything else.

another note: if tying to decide between a twin, full, or queen size mattress. get a queen. even if you have a tiny room you'll have a big bed. never get a king (or cal king) size mattress unless you have a permanent home, those things are a hassle to move and/or get rid of.

'nother note2: buy the sheets the same size as the bed, but buy the blanket/comforter the next size up it'll make all the difference on an extra cold night or when someone else is in bed with you.

'nother note3: don't get a used bed. you only need to encounter bedbugs once for you to consider setting your entire apartment on fire. even if that doesn't deter you just imagine sleeping on a pile of someone else's shedded skin and dried sweat.

I was worried about the heat. I'm a bigger guy and the thought of memory foam always made me think of trapped heat and sweat. No problems. I love this mattress. No box spring either so it opened up space under my bed for storage. I bought this frame for it. My entire bed was cheaper than some people pay for a box spring, let alone a frame and mattress. It's insane how expensive beds can be.

My friends and I once hacked a queen box spring up, but never quite got around to splitting it properly. It worked for the few months we lived in the apartment and we picked up a new box spring when we moved out. My fiance and I recently ran into a similar issue and found these. Not a DIY solution, but a lot less of a headache and not exorbitantly expensive. In my experience, splitting a box spring is not worth it, but I am kind of bad at these things.
