23. CMS Magnetics 4" x 6" Green Magnetic Viewing Film, See Magnetic Field with This Magic Film to Learn Magnetism. Applicable for All Kinds of Magnets Including Neodymium Magnets, Lots of Fun!

    Features:
  • FEATURING TWO MODELS - The Magnetochromic Olive Film and the Monochromic Green Film. The magnetochromic model uses a more expensive laboratory technique to produce vivid multi-colors when exposed to a strong magnetic field. The monochromic model is a cost-effective way of viewing the same magnetic field but lacks color depth and will only display in shades of green.
  • MAGNETOCHROMIC OLIVE FILM - This new technology encapsulates microscopic droplets of paramagnetic Fe3O4 particles suspended in a liquid solution within a thin plastic film to create the magnetochromic magnetic field viewing screen. When exposed to a strengthening magnetic field, these particles organize into chains that diffract light and cause the solution to change color from brown to red, yellow, green, and then blue. This enhances the visualization of the magnetic fields in vivid colors.
  • MONOCHROMATIC GREEN FILM - These translucent thin flexible sheets are coated with micro-capsules containing nickel flakes suspended in oil. When exposed to a strong magnetic field parallel to the surface of the carrier film, the surface of the flakes are reflective and appears bright. When lines of force are perpendicular to the film, the flakes are edge-on and appear significantly darker. When the film is placed on a magnet's pole, the latter case applies.
  • REUSE, RESET, SIZE & LAMINATION OPTIONS - Both films are reusable, but the olive film will have a much longer shelf life than the green film. The olive film automatically resets itself, while the green film may need to be reset by quickly swiping a magnet parallel to the film several times. These products are offered in various sizes that best suit your needs and some offers will have options of without lamination or with lamination for increased durability and protection of the film.
  • APPLICATIONS & GIFTING - These films have a multitude of creative applications. They are one of the best STEM educational activities to introduce students to the science and magic of magnetism. They're great for science projects and serve as a teaching tool for teachers in the classrooms. They also make great gifts for any age and gender. The recipients will spend countless hours having fun exploring and revealing hidden invisible natural forces they never knew existed. Give the gift of magic.

1. A 35L pack is plenty of space for an overnighter and probably enough space for a 2 nighter....depending on the season, your budget (for everything in your pack), and your willingness to forgo some comfort.

  • Season: If it is Summer or a shoulder season (late spring or early fall) 35L should be more than enough. You need less layers and lighter weight sleeping bag in the warmer seasons which saves a lot of space and weight. In Winter when it's colder it might be difficult to fit everything you need to stay warm inside a 35L, unless you are willing to spend some money
  • Budget: There are 3 different measurements for gear...lightweight, inexpensive, and durable, but unfortunately you can only have 2 at the same time. If you buy something that is inexpensive and durable, it is not going to be lightweight. If you buy something that is inexpensive and lightweight, it is not going to be very durable. And if you buy something that is lightweight and durable, you better believe it is going to cost you. All that being said, if you want to fit everything you need you a 1-2 night trip in the Winter into a 35L pack be prepared to pay quite a bit to get stuff light enough that will keep you warm enough and still fit into a 35L pack....unless you are willing to forgo some comfort.
  • Comfort: if you are trying to fit everything into your pack but don't have enough room, the obvious answer is either buy things that pack down smaller but perform the same (which means more money likely) or find ways to leave things behind. For instance learn how to tarp camp instead of tent camping. Go no-stove and cold soak all your food. Carry less clothes for "just in case" scenarios. And make sure everything in your pack serves as many purposes as possible (a stuffsack with extra clothes for a pillow, a pot that doubles as a bowl/cup, a spork, a pancho that can be turned into a tarp, etc.) Also switching to a down sleeping bag instead of the synthetic bag you are currently using will save you TONS of room in your pack. The caveat is that you will have to risk losing warmth in the down bag if it gets wet, where the synthetic bag will keep you warm if it gets wet. I have used down bags my whole life and have never had a major issue, but the loss of perceived comfort is still there sometimes.

As someone has already mentioned most people start in the 65L range and I'd say that's a good place for a beginner to begin. You can always carry less in a bigger pack, but you can only carry so much in a smaller pack. If you are looking to get a bigger pack, the best bang for your buck right now is the Granite Gear Crown2. They retail for $200 but you can find them online for as low as $120-$150 if you look hard enough and are willing to buy a pack that someone has maybe used once or twice. If you want a more substantial framed pack I'd say go with Osprey. As much as I hate to support the big guys in the pack industry, their warranty is killer. Rip your pack...send it back for a new one, catch it on fire...new one, basically as long as you don't loose it or shit in it, they will replace it.

    2. Honestly at the $200 price range the Nemo is a good tent that you can find for about $150 at REI but weighs in at about 6 lbs. I'd stay away from Mountainsmith and Alps, in my experience, while they do offer inexpensive gear it is neither lightweight nor durable (Mountainsmith Morrison 2 is 5 lbs 9oz for $135 and the Alps is basically almost 6 lbs for $160). For tents I think you can't beat Sierra Designs, Big Agnes, or smaller companies like Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Zpacks, Tarptent, and Gossamer Gear. My top pick for under $200 though would have to be Sierra Designs. You can usually find last years stuff on sale super cheap, like this Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight 2 for sale at Backcountry Edge. It's 120 bucks and 3 lbs 14 ozs, less than half the weight of your current tent. Another good option is a good tarp and a bivvy sack, unless bugs aren't an issue where you camp, then just a tarp with no bivvy. For example I hiked the Arizona trail in April of 2017 and only carried an 8 oz tarp for shelter.

    3. Like someone else has already mentioned, a stove is as important as you need it to be. Here is a link to everything you need to know about stoves. I prefer a Homemade Alcohol Stove because it costs about 3$ and an hour of your time to make, and mine has lasted me 3+ years and 4000+miles of backpacking. Plus fuel is easy to come by and very cheap. While canister stoves are convenient and boil water very fast, they can also break pretty easily if you don't take care of them. My alcohol stove, if I bend it I just bend it back and it works fine. If you want to try a canister stove for cheap get This one, I also own this one (and about 13 others) and it works great for under $15!

The last few things I'll say are that the frost on your sleeping bag is not dew, but condensation from your breath because your tent does not ventilate properly. I have never used a hooligan 2, but I'd guess there is not much ventilation and that the fly probably goes all the way to the ground on all sides. Also, and this is just my personal theory, but "footprints" are a scam. The reason a "footprint" is there is to cut down on abrasions on the bottom of your tent, not to make your tent waterproof on the bottom. Your tent floor should be plenty waterproof to keep weather out, and if you want some abrasion resistance just buy a piece of tyvek or visqueen plastic and cut it just a hair smaller than your tent's floor. I've had the same piece of tyvek for 2 years and I use it to sleep on 100-150 nights a year.

Let me know if you have any more questions and happy trails my friend.

Disclaimer: I use propane, not coal. My advice is only based on other people's experience, not my own.

I think the problem is the idea that a hairdryer is going to pull the same weight a proper blower will. Companies are trying to save money by making products that meet, but just barely, their intended use. Use as a forge blower was never considered as a use-case when any hairdryer was designed. The duty cycle and run times aren't comparable and the operating environments are near opposites.

You see a lot of YouTube videos where people throw together a forge with this and that and it usually has a hairdryer blower. This might work for a bit or for the home gamer, but it can't last long term or fit the needs of a hobbyist or professional. You don't see follow-up videos or blog posts of forge owners praising their hairdryer blowers. You do hear when people upgrade and how much better it is.

I appreciate your pain. As a hobbyist myself, I've tried to make some tools that I really should have just purchased outright. Many times you can hack something great together that'll last a long time (i refused to spend two grand on a belt grinder, so I built one), sometimes it's better off to just get the right tool for the job (purchased the wheels for said grinder instead of trying to make them out of wood or skateboard wheels).

I think a proper variable speed fan for a forge blower is something I would just buy outright. Amazon even has a few cheap options you can put a speed control dial on. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OM1L7E/

How much money do you keep spending on replacing hairdryers until you get a tool that'll last forever?

Good luck

Ahh I've seen this before, it's quite an easy fix. It's understandable that a rookie like you wouldn't know what to do.

Just follow these easy steps.

  • First, your computer is clearly booting incorrectly. Purchase this product ASAP.

  • Take the product and rub it all around the outside of your computer. This helps eliminate any pesky viruses.

  • Open up your computer. You'll see some things in places (the names are really not important) all over. Take the product and just rub it all over everything. Gotta do a deep clean for those viruses. While you're in there, make sure your wires are as tangled as possible. This helps slow viruses down if they infect your computer

  • Finally, you're going to want to do a hard reset of your computer. So make sure you go in an delete you system 32. This is where the most viruses live, so it's like destroying a bee hive. This is the first step of the hard reset.

  • The next step is to delete all of your accounts. Gmail, reddit, bank accounts, steam, etc. Just delete them. They could be harboring viruses that will infect you on your next go around.

  • And finally, the last part of the cleanse. Go out to the store or go online and find an install disk for Windows Vista. It has proven time and time again to be the best product you can own as a PCMR. It is incredibly simple and user friendly, much more so than any MAC you might buy.

Hope this all works for you! Best of luck brethren

The magnet's are pretty small for how strong they are, you need to look for Neodymium magnets instead of ferrous ones. This is the one we use, it's plenty of power and quite cheap if you ask me. Don't get you hand caught in between it and metal, they can crush bones easily.

As for good spots we have had most success under bridges next to roads, but fishing piers or really wherever people go to fish are great to find lures, hooks and all kinds of fishing tools that can often be resold.

Hope that helps, it sure is a lot of fun for so little money.

Almost exactly like mine, but mine is longer. I've had it for about 3 years now. Still awesome. I recommend some of these to help you move it around: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039ZIPL4

PLA isn't a good choice for this since it doesn't yield. It shatters without any warning signs.

I guess it would be a good idea to oversize everything quite a bit to make room for thicker walls.

Edit: I'm not sure why safety concerns always get downvoted on this sub, but there really is quite a lot of force involved and the device might be right next to your face when it violently shatters. Regular PLA is brittle. I'd even recommend wearing glasses/goggles when removing supports, because every once in a while a small sharp piece breaks off and flies in a random direction. PLA is cheap and super easy to print, but it does have its fair share of downsides.

u/distantreplay · 5 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Don't know what kind of "stud finder" you are using. But it is always best not to over complicate this. Get a good, strong rare earth magnet. Ideally one with a hole in it like this: https://www.amazon.com/CMS-Magnetics-Neodymium-Magnet-Countersunk/dp/B008H40U10
Tie a couple of feet of string on it. Hold the string end against the wall and swing the magnet like a pendulum. Move it around. Once you find a nail or screw go vertically from there. Those are your studs.
Every sheet of drywall has some fasteners. At least a few on every stud. They are made out of ferrous metal. Even lath and plaster walls have nails fastening the lath to the studs. There may be good reasons to have the fancy electronic gadget stud finders. But magnets work and they never need fresh batteries to do it.

u/ili-lil-ili · 3 pointsr/lasercutting

I bought a laser cutter and the stipulation was that I must have excellent fume control if I were to get one put in the warehouse. I didn't want to pay the crazy costs of a fume extractor. So, over the weekend I designed and cut this one instead. Here are all the parts necessary if anybody is interested in the costs. I chose very expensive filters - almost the most expensive I could find - and still came in way under the cost of a typical fume extractor:

(1) 8' x 4' X 1/4" Sheet Baltic Birch - $30

(1) 3-set medical grade air filters with pre-filter, activated carbon, and hyper hepa filter - $290

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019NOUBYS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(1) 10lbs of Activated Carbon - $25

https://www.amazon.com/AQUANEAT-Activated-Carbon-Aquarium-Canister/dp/B072BKVJGM/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1536687839&sr=8-4&keywords=10+lb+activated+carbon

(1) 8 " Inline Fan - $80

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DXYMM2I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(1) Wood Glue - $5

(1) Super Glue - $1

(1) 25' Duct - $30

(2) 8" Duct Starters - $8

(1) 8" x 4" Reducer - $8

(LOTS) of Clamps

Total Cost $477

So I'm ready to finish the assembly, but now I want to engrave something funny or cool on the door. Any good ideas?

I've been running this blower since January.

Dayton 1TDN7 Round Permanent Split Capacitor OEM Specialty Blower

You'd have to buy a power cord and wire it in (simple wire nuts). I've got it clamped to a 2" pipe flange. 50 cfm is plenty, and you don't need a rheostat to adjust flow, you just swing the air gate over the eye of the impeller. I usually run it about 1/8 to 1/4 open and get plenty of flow, but I have a relatively small firebowl.

This is a pretty sweet little fan and it's very quiet. I also bought a stomp switch that plugs into the power cord. You can just wire in a simple switch instead.

It's got a very low current draw as it has a solid state rectifier that converts the single phase standard AC to three phase. That's one of the reason I didn't use the rheostat because I didn't want to mess with the circuit. It's a 0.26 amp draw, so if you want to use it freestanding, a relatively cheap converter and battery could make it work, but that's getting pricier. I'm going to mess with a thermoelectric generator and see if I can power the fan off the forge heat.

Power cords run about $10 or less. That fan is $60.

175lb magnet and 1200lb tensile strength rope from Paracord planet on Amazon was what I was recommended.

Looked back and order was cheaper those two and gloves for about the cost of your magnet. Can always move up. What I was recommended below.

Rivers are still too high for kayaking safely so can't really speak on it but was not overkilling it and am totally not a strong enough person to pull out an ATM or safe. Figure I can get more later but if I do something stupid it's better to have a cheaper smaller magnet and I can just use my phone to get GPS coordinates to the bigger item that forces my hand on a pricier one.

I noticed you didn't use any latch for keeping the lid closed. I like the nice clean look, and a couple magnets set in can make a great "latch." I used something like this in the past. Drilled holes to fit and CA glued them in.

Sucks about the wood movement, but good job overall :)

Check that out. It is a jackstand + a bottle jack. Most bottle jacks have just a knurled nub to lift on - very dicey. This is a jack stand for added safety (does NOT negate the need for real jack stands!) but also has a nice curved lift head to get a good seat on axle/frame. Be safe, rover on.

I made a few recently. They were my second woodworking project ever, so they aren't perfect, but I was pretty happy with how they turned out.

http://imgur.com/a/FW97R

I still haven't even hung one up yet, so I can't really tell how well the magnet works. I just sort of tested it by holding bottle caps near the opener and dropping them.

These are the magnets I used: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008H40WWW/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1457586980&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=cms+mangetics+112+lbs

Probably paid way too much for the magnets, but I only needed 3.

edit: how much wood are you guys leaving between the magnet and the finished surface? I think I left 1/8"

I've been using 1/8" for everything for a super secure connection that I can paint over without weakening. Same company though as I feel their magnets find a good compromise between strength and size.

u/nostrebhtuca · 2 pointsr/EDC

Been here lurking for a while and finally decided to post my EDC. Since there's been some discussion lately as to where people carry their EDC that is how my list below is broken down. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Head

  • Seahawks Superbowl Champions Hat

    Neck

  • Seahawks lanyard with work ID, keycard, desk keys

    Left Wrist

  • Suunto Vector in Military Foliage Green

    Front Left Pocket

  • EZGO Slim
  • KOBALT Multitool
  • HTC One with White Otter Box Commuter Case
  • Olight S15 Baton

    Front Right Pocket

  • Carabiner with 4x Nite Ize S-Biners Size 0, Gerber Shard and KeySmart Standard Size
  • Gerber Impromptu
  • Kershaw Cryo 2

    Back Left Pocket or In-Hand

  • Rite in the Rain Notebook
  • Rite in the Rain Notebook Cover

For those interested in the EZGO and KeySmart my opinions are as follows.

I like the EZGOs form-factor, but after owning it for a while it doesn't 'stretch' at all for what's in there. I have two credit cards, ID, insurance and a punch card in mine and it's like pulling teeth to get anything out of it. Also, since it's made to fit cards, anything bigger than that can't be accommodated. As a result I have my CPL, vehicle insurance and KOBALT tool rubber-banded to the thing. I've been eyeing the Flipside 3X as a replacement, but their shipping is around $7 which is over 10% the cost of the wallet... hence my apprehension in buying one.

As for the KeySmart, I've had it a couple of days and so far I dig it but with a couple of caveats. They include two keyblanks for Schlage-style keys. I took one of them to Lowe's to have it cut and there was an issue with the blank, as a result their machine could not provide an accurate copy. I purchased a key from Lowe's and they made it without issue. Not sure what kind of weird science is up with the blanks they included, but I would be leery of buying their 'lightweight' and colored blanks as you may have similar results. My second issue may be somewhat nitpicky, but it's next to impossible to open the door with one hand anymore. Hands full of groceries or mail? Well, you better plan ahead on getting your key flipped out prior to getting to the door, other wise you'll be settin' that shit down.

Would I buy the EZGO Slim again? No. Would I buy the KeySmart again? Yes.

Instead of locking casters you can get some leveling casters as well. You can level and lock your bench in place with them. A bit expensive but definitely worth it.

Something like this:

u/S_W · 2 pointsr/DIY

I've looked into this quite a bit and the best way I found (which may be overkill) is to get the following:

  • vinyl coated steel cable LINK
  • Swageless Fork Terminal LINK
  • Eye Hooks at your mounting points that the terminals will connect to
  • Optional Turnbuckles LINK

The turnbuckles would really only be needed if you don't believe you could get the steel cable tight enough, but if you have a short span it shouldn't be an issue. If you plan to run the steel cable through each eye hook and only have the terminals at the ends, then the turnbuckle may be needed.

    EDIT:
They also make much cleaner looking solutions where the terminals have a built-in turnbuckle like THIS and terminals that have a lag bolt already attached which would remove the need for eye hooks like THIS

I've built one similar to this using those exact same casters. I hate them with a passion. I think those casters are too small. You might look into something like these casters I haven't personally used them, but I see a lot of people recommend them over the types that you have.

Other than that, looks good.

Scissor jacks are absolute trash, even when you're just using them to change a tire on perfectly level ground.

The minimum i do is ditch the scissor jack, get a wider base bottle jack. That's just for emergencies.

Actual floor jack is 100% needed if you're doing planned work, along with jack stands.

I'll admit, i've gone under a car supported by floor jacks before - it was fine... but i've also seen too many accidents happen to chance it anymore.

Scissor jack is good for the garbage only.

There are also bottle jack stands - locking jack stand and lift in one.

I don't move the bench often, but when I need to these work like a charm. Very smooth.

u/nobletrout0 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

if you do that, you will end up with a huge puddle in the morning.

But yes, you need a way for the water to come out. you can have it drain to a bath tub or something, or you could invest in one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Little-554421-VCMA-20UL-115-volt-Condensate/dp/B000OLCGT8

it's a "condensate pump", you put the hose from your AC into it, and it will pump somewhere else to drain, like a kitchen sink or out that window.

u/Aquifel · 28 pointsr/theydidthemath

I don't know how to do the math on the strength of the magnet, not sure how we measure that. I can do the math on the price though:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074BQ2X6G/

For me, it's $12.49, I bought one a month or two back, it's a very strong magnet.

u/hanielb · 2 pointsr/Frat

We've used heavy plastic sheeting like the kind painters use to cover floors. Then use really good masking tape to tape it down on the floor and about 2-3 feet up the wall. If you tape it right and keep the corners tight, it won't get pulled down even if it gets rowdy because the weight of other people standing on it will help keep it in place. Afterwards, just roll it up and throw the nasty thing away.

[Something like this.] (http://www.amazon.com/TRM-Manufacturing-61025C-Weatherall-Thickness/dp/B00KOOF5W0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450296953&sr=8-2&keywords=heavy+duty+plastic)

u/jmdbcool · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

That's an interesting thought... kind of curious to see what it would do. I think you'd only run into issues very close to or on top of a magnet. If it were me, I would try positioning your prints in a part of the bed with the least magnets-- they are around the edge and a few in the middle. Study the pics here or get yourself a piece of magnetic viewing film to make it easier to see where those spots are.

u/living_vicariously · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

I've seen this one recommended a few times but I haven't bought it yet (I don't reach for my magnetics very often so I just haven't gotten around to it). This one is supposed to be strong enough that you can just lay your finger over the magnet and then paint each coat...no hovering necessary!

I know this is old, but I'm currently putting together a drip tray shelf with magnets, and I want to point out to anybody else searching the sub:

The magnets on Amazon are a little more pricey, but they all quote 70+ lbs of pull force. These HD ones only say 5.8 lbs. So cheaper per magnet, sure. But at $8 (for 2 magnets, not per), you can probably use far fewer magnets.

Looks great! When I made mine, I used a Forstner bit to drill a hole from behind and epoxies in place. Even though I drilled up to the pilot point barely poking through the front, and used this magnet, it only holds maybe 6-8 before they fall off. What size magnet did you use and how many caps can yours hold?

Copying and pasting a comment from a previous thread -

I did a DIY setup, with everything coming from Amazon except the carabiners, which you can pretty much find anywhere. Here's the links for the parts:

Steel Cable: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YDK49M/

Wire Rope Clips: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00III7IP6/

Pulleys: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BD6BSQ/

Thimbles: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038YY3LW/

Tie-down Straps (for hanging pulleys from the rack): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AS5QC1C/

Loading Pin: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IRY5U14/

Assuming you have some tools around, this should be everything you would need. I recommend a bolt cutter if you don't already have one. I thought I would be able to cut the steel cable with the wire cutters built into my pliers and it was not happening. Ended up having to make a trip to the tool shop this morning to get that.

Thanks for the post. I have seen a few of these before, but this one motivated me to finally order everything. I have been wondering what I was going to do this summer. Currently my rigs costs me about $8.50 a day in electricity, but saves me about $5 a day since it is literally heating my entire house.
@ .12 kwh the fan at full speed costs $.55 a day. I ordered a bigger tent and 2 of the fans. Hopefully I can run them at some lower percentage (they come with controllers).

This is what I ordered:

For electronics: Garmin watch with HRM & strap. RoadID. Jawbone UP.

I'm about to be experimenting with water for the Summer months here in Florida. I bought a handheld and didn't like it. Then I got a good deal on a camelback-like setup. I've also considered hear belts that hold like 2-4 small bottles, but I'll check out this backpack setup. I usually just run with a Halo headband to catch sweat, but I'm going to try a Brooks visor to not only absorb sweat but keep the sun off my face. I'm trying my damndest to not resign myself to the treadmill this Summer.

Also, for car keys these are priceless. Super tiny. If you have a keychain setup where you can take your ignition key off by itself (which you should, because having your other keys dangling from your ignition can cause damage over time), you clip this onto your top lace and tuck the bottom of the key into a lower lace and your key stays put.

I couldn't figure out the best subreddit to ask this question in.

I'll be moving about a dozen or so heavy boxes and totes full of books this weekend out of a house in preparation to list it on the market.

Me and my SO are not big and strong people, and we are looking for any DIY tips to make moving these boxes easier. I've thought about buying a set of Forearm Forklift straps but I'm not sure if those will be too big. The boxes we will be moving are similar to these. They do not have much space for hands to grip around the lid.

I know a lot of people will tell you to filter what your kids can watch and play (video games) but that is not necessarily true. My mother allowed me to watch whatever I wanted (such as Beavis and Butthead and Nightmare on Elm Street, ect) as a child and I NEVER imitated violence or stupidity because my mother taught me that television is not real life, she taught me there are consequences to the actions you see on TV that they may not show. Her main lesson was "It's in the script." So prevent them from watching inappropriate content if you must, but a better idea is to just teach them the difference between fantasy and real life. Sorry, it's not funny.

i bought one of these and it is just a touch underpowered to pull the cap off. It can more times than not. I'd say 70% of the time the cap comes off. Maybe a slightly stronger magnet will do it. I just don't want the cap to basically be stuck to the magnet.

u/Yoshi_Poacher · 2 pointsr/Warhammer40k

I use primal horizon - I have seen it in multiple shops. Package looks like link below (comes in several sizes). It's really simple - buy a drill bit of the same size (primal horizon sells those too) and stick the magnet in there. Biggest thing is don't glue them the wrong way around - easy to avoid by leaving them stacked while you work.

I'm of a similar mind; I have two major magnets I carry, a 173 and 405 pound lifts. Personally, I started with the 173, because it was cheap, but as others have said, sub-200 can be a little anemic depending on what you find.

Thus, I upgraded to the 405. What I find myself doing regularly is using the 173 more often because it's smaller and more maneuverable, and whipping out the 405 when I find something I'm slipping off of.

The magnets I have:

I don't think that you can buy just the bare magnetic holder, but just a simple neodymium magnet bar would do the trick. Add a little insulation on the remote side so that the remote comes off the magnet rather than the whole thing lifting off the surface.

So, interestingly, you can actually see magnetic fields in THREE dimensions. Yeah, 3d. How so? They're called ferrocells. Here's an imgur album http://imgur.com/gallery/xQRYH

I can actually explain how this happens, too. It's called "Field incommensurability." Take a north and south pole of a magnet, they're "located" there right? Nope, if you could split the magnet in half there would be TWO north and TWO south poles on each side of the magnet. Split it again, there will be a north and south pole on each piece, every single time. This is an example of field incommensurability.

Now, when you take that magnetic viewing film and place two magnets side by side you'll see the white plane self-center itself around the two magnets.

What's actually happening is that when a magnet reaches another magnet and comes in contact, it becomes ONE entity - one magnet. So at that end with the singular one it's actually going to a new "end" of the magnet, as the entirety of the magnet becomes one big, long magnet.

Field incommensurability is where fields are non-point-specific, and are not LOCATED at somewhere, they are FORCED there, or are a pressure mediation to that spot. Think of it like water flowing down a hill, it's forced to be at that location.
