I bought a mechanical keyboard (MK) about a year ago. I really, really enjoy typing on it - but that's about the only difference. Speed/accuracy/typing is about the same.

The one big thing about MK's is they're often a lot more customizable. Alternative layouts are very popular and shift layers are also very useful.

MK's are a bit of a rabbit hole. If you visit the mechanical keyboard sub-reddit, you can literally spend days trying to figure out which keyboard is right for you. At the end of the day, I've come to the conclusion that most MK's are exceptional quality compared to run-of the mill keyboards.

The biggest factor in a mechanical keyboard is the switch type (i.e. the color of the switch) and the manufacture. For the most part, Cherry Corp is considered to have the best/most reliable switches. Blue colored switches are considered the best for typing, but they can be a bit noisy for an office environment (I work from home so I can clack away). Browns are also good - they're a bit quieter (I'm currently building a keyboard with browns).

As long as you get Cherry Corp switches (Cherry MX), you can't really go wrong.

I have this keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/QuickFire-Mechanical-Keyboard-ActivLite-Technology/dp/B00M562EQU/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479406219&sr=1-2&keywords=quickfire+rapid+i

It also comes in a version without a backlight for much less: https://www.amazon.com/Storm-QuickFire-Rapid-Tenkeyless-Mechanical/dp/B0068INSUM

Those specific models don't have the keypad (I bought a separate one to place on the left side of my keyboard), but the same series of keyboards offers several variations - including full-sized ones with number arrows and the keypad.

----

One of the big things people look for in a programming keyboard is the ability to program shortcuts into it (I have symbols as a function layer on my home row - super handy for programming). While nice to have it built directly into the keyboard, I don't consider it necessary as you can do it on the computer side of things.

----

I'd recommend spend some time in /r/MechanicalKeyboards to learn from other people.

Other recommendations:

  • DAS Keyboard
  • Happy Hacking Keyboard
  • WASD Code Keyboard (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/)
  • Ducky
  • Vortex

Honestly, there are so many high quality brands that you can't really go wrong. I would try to avoid MK's from consumer brands like Corsair, Logitech, and Razer. You have to do your research with the major brands as they have some amazing keyboards as well as some terrible duds.
u/mellow12 · 3 pointsr/xbmc

Damn, This got a bit long and didn't really scratch the surface. Sorry.

Here's my setup:

Router: Linksys E3000 running dd-wrt firmware

Media Server/Nas: Re-purposed Dell Vostro 200, Celeron 420 1.6Ghz, 4Gb Ram, Win7 Pro, 6TB Storage (2TB+4TB), Shares are served with Windows SMB & haneWIN NFS Server.

House Has 3 TVs: Living Room, Bedroom, and Basement Office

Living Room: XBMC Running on a Foxconn nt-A3700, Win7, 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD. Connected via Wireless N. Bose Cinemate II Sound System (1080p HDMI, S/PDIF Coaxial)

Bedroom: Raspberry Pi running RASPBMC, Connected with Edimax EW-7811un Wireless Adapter. using NFS shares. (1080p HDMI, TV Speakers)

Basement/Home Office: An old self assembled gaming rig re-purposed as a dedicated HTPC. GeForce 9800GTx+, Sony STR-DH520 7.1 Audio System. (1080p HDMI, S/PDIF-TOSLINK)

Other Devices: WDTV Media Player non-XBMC. Would not reliably see windows SMB shares, but NFS worked well. Not in use.

Thoughts: If you're serious. At some point get a dedicated server PC of some sort. It doesn't need to be much in terms of hardware if all you intend to do is serve media files on your LAN. If you plan on converting the files as you serve them (Plex? not necessary with XBMC), then you'll need some processing power behind your server setup. Mine sits in a locked room with our surveillance DVR. No monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Ethernet plugged directly into the router for the full 1000 mbp/s.

The Foxconn nt-A3700 connected in the living room is a great little box. We bought it back in 2012, and I haven't regretted it yet. I guess a contemporary alternative would be the Intel NUC. We use a MCE IR remote to control XBMC. IR reciever connected with a usb dongle.

The best of them is the basement office HTPC. I have a PS3 Remote control connected via bluetooth for XBMC. It works seamlessly between the Sony TV and Sony Reciever. I play video games on it (Steam Big Picture with an Xbox 360 controller), surf the web, browse Reddit. ect I use a Lenovo N5902 when I need it to act like a PC.

The Raspberry Pi: It's not perfect, but I like it. It runs RASPBMC. The interface (Confluence Skin) can be a little laggy at times, but I kind of expected that from a 700mhz processor (I'm currently overclocked to 900 with heatsinks). You'll have to buy the MPEG-2 license for your board if you plan on playing files using that codec. Ours uses a MCE Remote similar to the Living room htpc but the IR reciever is connected to the GPIO Pins. It was a bit of a pain to find a good wireless adapter. I went through 3 different models before I found the Edimax. That seems to be the theme of the Pi. Yeah it works but only with certain peripherals. Mine still struggles with 3gb+ 1080p movies over wireless (Stuttering/Buffering), but it handles 2gb 720p movies with ease. This feels like more of a wifi/usb power limitation of the Pi. Hard-wired it will play those same 1080p files just fine. If you like to tinker then get it. If you don't want to fuss with it then get a bookshelf htpc like the NUC (or Foxconn nt-A3700) But you're looking at apples and oranges between a 35$ media player(100~ with accessories) and a 300$ PC

The media library is housed on two internal hard drives. 2TB and 4TB. I have windows set to email if there are any issues with the disks as I have had to replace the 4TB once in the last 4 years and nearly lost a metric fuck-ton of data. I use four folders as my shares. 'Television' on the root of that 4TB drive because it needs nearly all of it. Movies and Music on the root of the 2TB system drive. They are shared via windows built-in SMB and hanewin NFS Server. The reason I use hanewinNFS over windows SMB is that the Pi seems to perform better using NFS shares over wireless. Could be lower the overhead or just voodoo. Who Knows?
I use theRenamer to rename all media before I add it to the XBMC library. Then I scrape it using Media Companion and have it store the info on the server with the media. The reasoning behind this is that when I need to repair, rebuild, or add another XBMC client (It happens from time to time) It doesn't have to scrape 1000's of episodes and movies from the web. It's all there next to the file for XBMC to find quickly. You're welcome imdb/theTVDB.com

Hope that gives you a general idea.

The 1600 will perform better in games/multi-tasking, and can be overclocked.

Solid motherboard. Does what it needs to.

Cheaper RAM, and faster.

Bumped the SSD down to 275GB. Solid SSD. Much better than the 850-EVO, in my opinion.

Cheaper with more storage, and much more quiet.

Upgraded it to the 1070 Ti. Not too much more expensive, but will last longer.

The S340 has pretty bad airflow, which is the most important part of a case (in my opinion) especially since Pascal (Nvidia's current generation of GPU architecture) is sensitive to temperatures and can perform worse at higher-than-usual temperatures. The Focus G is great, though. Good airflow, easy to build in, etc.

The SuperNova NEX has low quality internals and a lot of issues with coil whine. The G2, however, is a top-tier PSU.

Razer makes pretty mediocre peripherals, especially when they're charging $80 for a non-mechanical gaming keyboard. The Plugable is a pretty nice keyboard, though. Tenkeyless, mechanical, simple backlight. Solid keyboard, and it's cheaper. There's no merchant because PCPP has it priced much higher than it actually is. Here is the Amazon link.

Their mice are especially mediocre. The G502, however, is stellar. Better sensor, more buttons, better scroll wheel. Also has much better and more vast customization, as well as an RGB light rather than the ugly green Razer still goes for.

Any questions? Feel free to ask!

If you don't mind my asking, how much of your left arm do you have? If your wrist is still there, then maybe you could look into giving these guys a shout. If you could find a way to operate a mouse -or a trackball- with your left arm (I suspect that would be a challenge depending on your dominant side) you'd be able to dedicate your right hand to buttons on the numpad.

If you're not able to operate a mouse/trackball with your left arm, you mentioned you used your left arm for just the spacebar. Maybe you could wire up a bunch of these to a board and map them to abilities/ults.

Most options for you would involve some DIY work, but the one that would require the least taking apart and building of gadgets, and would probably give you the best performance would be the following:

Operate a trackball with your left arm, and use foot pedals mapped to right and left click (which you might have an easier time using your left and right foot for, respectively), while using a keyboard/numpad with your right hand.

I realize that to move your left arm over a trackball for long periods of time you'd need some serious forearm strength. Maybe you could look into a super simple prosthesis if you don't have one, just to provide you with more surface area to run across the ball.

If I had more technical skills/ resources I would look into building something for you as it's a project I'd be very interested in, but at the moment I'm not capable of doing so.

I hope these ideas might help you out a bit. I expect that learning to operate a trackball will be very difficult, but if you build the muscle memory I suspect you'd be almost entirely unimpeded while using the above setup. Let me know if this helps at all. I wish you the best of luck.

My one bit of advise, skip the keyboard case and get a nice small bluetooth keyboard, and one or more cases of your choice. I've had several generations of iPads and a few Keyboard cases in my time. They are more expensive and have consistently broken on me. Of all the separate keyboards I've had, not one has broken, I've taken them with me between devices, and they've lasted years. You can buy far more or less protective cases, as you wish.

Just some recommendations:

  • https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AKCM5YG
  • https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GWGLUZ0/

The Microsoft is my favorite, but no longer available. the iClever foldable is my newest and I'm getting to like it quite a bit.

The only argument I can make for the 4G iPad is that it also includes GPS capabilities. If you want to use it for navigation, photography with geotagging, or any other location-dependent activity, you might want to consider it. It also grabs a slightly higher resale value.

The Pro gets you the Pencil, faster speeds, more memory, slightly better screen, larger sizes. If you don't need any of these, then no reason to get the Pro. The iPad can do anything a Pro model can do, except for hardware differences (Pencil compatibility and True Tone screen).

The iPad (any model) can handle note taking and basic office productivity very well. Apple's iWork apps are the "smoothest" and fit the iPad the best. But Microsoft Office is not far behind. Google's apps are shoe-horned to work with the iPad and the least "iPad like" IMHO. But since all are basically free to download and try I'd say give them all a chance.

I would recommend getting the 128G. You can't upgrade later and some day you may wish you had the space, especially for movies and the like. Transferring to and from the cloud can be a chore.
u/Stormfront12 · 2 pointsr/MouseReview

(I hope it is fine that we're talking about keyboards now in a mice subreddit)

This is the keyboard in question right now. My friend enjoys it, I like flat keys, and this review is very positive.

The CM Storm Quickfire that I saw after searching were a bit expensive, and though I know mechanical keyboards and tall keys are popular, I don't know about them myself. I do know that I like flat keys though. The keyboard I am typing on right now (that is old, with messed up keys) looks like this, just wired. This is the keyboard on my parents' computer (if I remember correctly) and whenever I have used it while helping them I enjoyed it (especially over this old one).

Since you said keyboards are forgiving compared to cheap mice, the reviews are positive, and my friend enjoys his, I'm probably gonna stick with this.

Again, thanks for all of the info and help!

Some suggestions for keyboard/mice:

Lenovo N5902. Goes on sale regularly.

Logitech K400

Generic keyboard/touchpad remote. There are many slight variants on this.

I've found that due to the size/shape/content of my living room, a wireless receiver plugged into my HTPC doesn't work 100% reliably. I've connected a USB extension cable to the back of my HTPC and run it behind things and under my couch to give me the best reception. Generally you can go up to 15 feet; any longer than that and you need a powered extension.

If you have a Logitech Harmony remote, I highly recommend the OVU4003/00 (RC6) USB IR reciever. Once set up with Windows and the Harmony remote, it works with XBMC/Kodi out of the box. This receiver was branded as HP/Dell/Gateway/Philips and probably many more. A Flirc is another option but it is ugly (IMO) and more expensive.

Regarding hardware, if you aren't gaming you don't need a lot. When using older gear the most important thing is video hardware acceleration. For Intel machines, you need something with at least GMA 4500 (Q45 chipset) graphics or later, and for AMD you need something with at least a 760G chipset. This hardware dates back to 2008/2009. Dedicated graphics cards should be at least a Radeon HD 2600 or a GeForce 8500. These cards date back to 2006/2007. CPUs are a grey area, but any mainstream dual core CPU (Athlon X2, Core 2 Duo) from 2007+ should be able to handle most everything. My first HTPC had an AMD Athlon X2 5000+ and it's still working just fine with W7 and Kodi.

If you want to game (and don't want to use a device like the DOKO), you'll need to find a quiet case that supports full length video cards. There are a bunch available, and I'm not sure if this has changed in the last 2-3 years, but the vast majority of HTPC cases large enough to support full size gear and M-ATX motherboards are simply too long to fit in a standard A/V rack or TV stand. The only exceptions I am aware of are the Silverstone GD05 and GD04. I'd be willing to bet that Silverstone has some other cases that will work also.

Additionally, you'll want to find a PSU, case fans and CPU cooler that are quiet and efficient. The best resource for this is http://www.silentpcreview.com/.

Lastly, if your A/V receiver has only S/PDIF audio inputs (no HDMI) and you want to play games in 5.1 surround sound, you're going to need to find either a sound card or motherboard with an S/PDIF output that supports DTS-Connect and/or Dolby Digital Live. Motherboards stopped coming with this around 2008 (AFAIK) and the cheapest option to get it in an add-on card is the Sound Blaster Z.

Well, this keyboard gets this user review:

> Yep, weirdest, wanna bet? Got this keyboard because our Quaker Parrot, Mongo, was taking the keys out of the regular one. Impossible to keep him from stealing the keys, a couple were stripped so they didn't even click in anymore. Looked for a "bird-proof" keyboard to no avail. Remember being impressed a few years ago by the rubber-like roll up keyboards and started looking. The rubber ones would probably work the best, but the reviews weren't very inspiring. Hard to press, repeats, etc. Not great for playing games. This one can be put under running water (couldn't even imagine) without damage. Keys are not coming out. Ok, if I let Mongo have his way with the keyboard I am positive he could find a way. At least break them if nothing else. But, he doesn't have quite that opportunity. The keys feel about the same as a regular keyboard. There are some keys that are absent (or placed differently), but nothing that I can't get used to. So, if you have a medium sized bird that likes to steal keyboard keys and fly away with them, making you chase him while he laughs hysterically (ok, I'm presuming), consider this keyboard. Working great, except for the finger malfunctions (can I blame that on a new keyboard? Sure, why not.) get this one.

> UPDATE (3/22/14): Ok, Mongo succeeded in pulling off the key with a squiggly line on it (used for Spanish over vowels/under the Esc key). I stuck it back on, but he kept pulling it. Then, lo and behold, I got a great fix for it. Superglue. Yep, superglue. Turns out the keys have a thin piece of plastic underneath that fit into a slot inside the keyboard. A drop of glue on the 'dimples' on the side of the key, snap into the slot, and we have a very perturbed Quaker Parrot. Not to mention a fully functional, intact keyboard. Oh, and seed shells come right out, even when they are stuck under the key itself. Just tilt and tap. So very happy with this keyboard.

u/binary_is_better · 1 pointr/buildapc

That motherboard has HDMI, DVI, and VGA, but no RCA video out.
If you want RCA out you'll need an add-on card.

For audio it has computer speaker outs and S/PDIF Out out. If you're going to use computer speakers you're good. If you're going to connect to your home audio via S/PDIF Out you're good. If you have other plans you'll need an add-on card.

As far as keyboard and mouse goes, I use a Lenovo Wireless Keyboard. It holds up to heavy use by two toddlers pretty well. I highly recommend it. There's also a newer model, but I don't know much about it.

There are also some nice HTPC cases, but I don't know which ones are good. I'm sure others here do. The case I recommended is my go to case for budget builds. It's a great case, but bigger than most HTPC builders want.

u/Tikkaritsa · 1 pointr/ipad

If an external keyboard is ok, check out the Logitech K811. Backlight, battery life for months, 3-device pairing, great keys etc. Better than most of the keyboard cases and external keyboards. Expensive but easily worth it. I use mine with my iPad and PS4 mostly.

It feels a lot better than the small external Logitech Keys-to-Go, Logitech Type+ Air 2 case and the Apple Smart Keyboard in my opinion (have tested those quickly) and is not limited to just one iPad. Nothing to bad say about it since September 2015.

For cases, a lot of people think that the Apple Smart Case is the best one. I own it and it's all-around great. Hella expensive though.

For styluses, I only have done limited research of them and don't own one (except a small cheap capacitive stylus) so can't help much.

u/dantat · 2 pointsr/keyboards

in terms of brand reputation, filco is highly recommended by many keyboard enthusiasts. the TKL version and the one with TK both are cherry mx browns, excellent build quality, but also a bit pricey. The Filcos also come in a style where the the key lettering is printed on the front of the keys instead of the top (TK/TKL).

Another brand that has solid build quality is leopold. simple design, build quality that rivals the filco, mx browns and a removable USB cable.

another popular brand on reddit and in general are the das keyboards. Also not backlit, but like the filco, the build quality's great, though some people don't care for the glossy finish (looks great, but attracts fingerprints like crazy).

if backlighting is important to you, the razer blackwidow has features more suited towards gamers (macro keys, backlighting, earphone/mic jacks, usb port) though the build quality would be arguably better on the first 3.

u/DoctorBerghan · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I've been using a Logitech Wireless K750 for going on a year and a half now, and I'm about ready to put it through a wall. When it isn't interrupting fullscreened applications to warn me that it's only at 60% battery left and might die at any second (even though its battery has lasted the entire time I've had it just fine), it's interrupting fullscreened applications to warn me that it isn't sitting three inches under an industrial heating lamp and therefore doesn't have sufficient light. I'm thinking of replacing it with a mechanical keyboard.

I primarily use my keyboard for typing, not for gaming. I've only been a PC gamer for around 5 years, and have almost 15 years of experience using controllers prior to that, so I've always just stuck with what's natural to me. I do, however, do a good amount of writing, so the keyboard certainly gets used for normal typing a lot. I've done a modest amount of research over the last few days, and have come to the conclusion that I should get Cherry MX Blue switches, whatever keyboard I ultimately get, as they are designed for typing over gaming.

I've narrowed it down to three choices that I'm looking at. I'm just looking for a bit of input about what you all think would be the best.

Das Keyboard Model S

Pros:

  • I've read that Das has some of the best quality available.

  • Modestly priced compared to the 4.

  • This is the only one of the three I'm considering that has the actual Windows logo on the Windows key instead of the company's logo. Very minor complaint, but I think that's slightly on the tacky side.

    Cons:

  • I like it aesthetically the least of the three. It's just a little on the plain side. It's very utilitarian looking.

    Das Keyboard 4

    Pros:

  • I've read that Das has some of the best quality available, and this, as far as I can tell, is their top-of-the-line model.

  • More aesthetically pleasing than the Model S. It has a nice luxurious look to it.

    Cons:

  • The most expensive of the three. It's right on the border of how much I think I'm willing to spend.

  • The Das logo on the Windows key.

    Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro S

    Pros:

  • The least expensive of the three.

  • Cooler Master seems to be a favorite brand of this sub, from what I've read.

  • Reviews slightly better than either of the Das keyboards.

  • Me likey shiny purdy rainbow lights... drools

    Cons:

  • Seems more oriented towards gaming than writing, but that might just be the marketing hype. It does still have Cherry MX Blues after all.

  • The Cooler Master logo on the Windows key.

You have the exact same logic as I had, I got my mouse, keyboard, and HDMI-Mini DisplayPort hardware for well under $130. I can take a picture if you want to see them for size etc.

I got the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Windows for $39 (now $43.75). I got this one specifically because of the layout of the Ctrl key (can't stand the Fn key being on the outside). I use it daily and it works great. Only downside for me is you have to use Fn to press the F-keys, but I quickly got used to it. The included case is nice if you want to throw it in a backpack or carry it naked; but once I got my smaller bag, I put the case away and just carry it to keep down weight and size.

I got the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse for $23. Its a nice compact mouse that is made specifically for Windows 8. I carry it around with the rest of the stuff. I usually use the pen, but when I am using my Surface as a media box, it's really nice to have.

And for good measure, I got the PNY MiniDisplayPort to HDMI for $10. But really, you could probably go with almost any option. I decided to go cheap, but not the cheapest, and this one has been working great for the past few weeks.

I have a GN4 as well as a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Ed. I use the Logitech Tablet BT Keyboard for both of them but mostly the tablet and the Office-like app. It connects quite easily and battery life using Eneloop 2,000mAh Ni-MH rechargeable batteries is very good.

I really wanted keyboard/case combo, but none of the ones I found were to my liking. I like the Logitech one because the case folds into the stand if you need one. The other downside of the tablet itself is that the charging port is on the bottom edge of the tablet. When I want to charge the device while using the stand, I just let the screen rotate and use it upside down. The Note 4 hasn't been a problem. I have the Otterbox Defender case with the belt clip and use the clip as the kick stand.

I have not tried any other BT keyboards with my Note devices. Since you want a KB with a USB port, to attach a mouse I presume, a work around for this would be to use a BT KB and an USB OTG cable to attach a mouse via the micro USB charging/data port. I am not sure if a wireless mouse will work, but I have successfully used my OTG cable to attach a cheap Dell wired mouse and many times to upload .cr2 and project files from my SD card reader and thumb drives respectively.

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/tablet-keyboard-android-win8-rt

The Logitech Tablet KB $69.99 retail MSRP. But, I got it off of Amazon for about $35.

There are many OTG cables out there. Samsung makes one for about $10 (at BestBuy) but you can get a bunch from Monoprice.com for that amount.

u/Just_Worse · 2 pointsr/laptops

The iPad pro allows you to connect to an external display, has a higher resolution and is more responsive, but if you want to use a tablet as an EFB, then you really don't need those things. An iPad Pro is perfect for anyone that needs a laptop replacement or a dedicated creative content device, but an EFB shouldn't need too much power.
If you need to do any typing you can use the on screen keyboard or one of these 2 keyboards. And If you're okay with Android, the Samsung tab A and S5E would serve similar functions (assuming software compatibility and company policy doesn't restrict device brands) while being a little cheaper $200 and $400 respectively (depending on where you get them) as well as the S5e supporting external monitors and Dex mode (which essentially turns your tablet into a laptop in terms of software looks).

TLDR: It depends on your company and monetary restrictions, but I'd go for the iPad Air for something so straightforward

I have a similar setup also for school. I use a Bluetooth Logitech Tablet Keyboard and I have an OTG cable that I use occasionally for USB storage and sometimes a spare Logitech wireless (unified) desktop mouse I have lying around. (Also, if you're looking for a case recommendation, I'm using the MoKo cover that a few other people on this sub recomended, and it's been pretty nice--especially for the price)

I find this setup to work pretty well, but the mouse is usually overkill. Another thing to point out with my mouse is that if you don't use it after a very brief period of time, it disconnects into a power saving mode and takes a while to reconnect. A few other notes from my experience with mice on Android is that left, middle and right clicks all act as touch inputs; hover events work in specific applications like Chrome; scrolling works like you'd expect it to; and the back button acts like the system back button (but the forward button is useless, even in Chrome).

I can definitely recommend the keyboard, though. The one I linked to already is a full-sized keyboard with decent keys and shortcuts that work like they say. Alt + Tab also works like on Windows--and it's amazing to say the least. Typing on it still feels a bit weird, and possibly my biggest gripe about it is that if you're holding Shift, the backspace button doesn't do anything.

I'm not really sure how it works to have multiple Bluetooth connections since I haven't really tried it before, but I think that the Nexus 9 supports multiple connections, even to older Bluetooth revisions. My only experience with this, however, is the fact that I once had my tablet connected to my laptop and the keyboard over Bluetooth.

  • ergodox if you liked the kinesis and want to build your own (not domed; it's a fun project and massdrop often sells kits)
  • hhkb
  • filco tkl this one still gives you arrow keys
  • cm storm cheapest of the bunch but a pretty solid keyboard

Others to check out are pokers and the other stuff elitekeyboards.com sells. With the exception of the hhkb, you'll need to decide on what sort of switches you want (Brown, Blue, etc.). My favorites are browns which give you pretty solid feedback without the click. Blues are very slightly stiffer and give you an audible click. You might consider ordering a sampler pack from somewhere that gives you 4 or 5 switches to try out.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards is a great place to look at as others pointed out

Just got the o-rings and put them on - they make a huge difference. The travel time is greatly reduced, the keys themselves feel more stable and the sound is much softer as well.

I now love this keyboard wholeheartedly - it looks great and now it feels incredible!!!

These are the rings I got:

It's amazing to me how configurable these keyboards are. Can't wait to mess with the keycaps next. Thanks for the feedback on your board. Glad we're both digging it!!

u/GoingIntoOverdrive · 3 pointsr/keyboards

I've had a look at the devastator combo and it definitely looks interesting at that pricepoint. However, I would offer the following:

  1. What do you want from your keyboard? Do you want to improve your typing experience or looking to enhance your gaming? Either way, shelling out more money will get you better ergonomics (reduced strain, increased longevity, etc.) and in most cases a big increase in how long a board can stay with you.
  2. Have you considered mechanical switches? I switched a little while back and now I can't imagine buying rubber dome again. It's not because of elitism, it's simply a better experience for me all round and I now live in the knowledge that the board I have will be with me for some time.

There are some really decent boards at reasonable pricepoints scattered all about. The immediate ones that come to mind are:

  3. Corsair K65
  4. CM Storm Quickfire Rapid
  5. Rosewill RK-6000

Granted, these are above the pricepoint mentioned for the devastator but if you're willing, the ergonomics and quality of these boards should vastly outweigh it.

As mentioned, have a look at /r/mechanicalkeyboards once you have a feel for what you want in a keyboard. If you spend significant amount of time behind a computer in the first place (gaming + work can easily soak up dozens of hours a week) then investing in quality kit seems like a good idea.

If you think the Devastator set looks awesome and fits your needs, by all means go for it. Be sure to post pics and your experience when you get it!

EDIT: For reference, have a quick look at the reviews being posted on Amazon. Though not the most reputable source, they do seem to highlight a number of concerns for this combo with build quality and polish. Most notably the fact that the scroll lock key is used to turn the LEDs on and off on the keyboard but simultaneously also turns that function on. This may be a problem if you use programs that respond to that key being on. In addition, it appears that a) the keys are not particularly well-finished and may have some chips in them and b) when the LEDs are off you can't see the writing on the keys. Not a problem if you're a touch typist but if you tend to look at the board while typing you may have issues.

I'm not the best judge for this, but to me, something like this is "good enough" until you can save up some money and get a nice mechanical keyboard. I usually just go with whats cheap and has the best reviews as far as keyboards when I'm on a budget. The nice feel of a keyboard doesn't make up for sub 60 (maybe even 30, haven't looked at benchmarks) fps in AAA games.

u/lesziii · 2 pointsr/keyboards

It's really up to you what you want to use, I personally use both.
I can recommend to you some boards that have the singular RGB color options in their software, but since you're buying a membrane individual RGB usually isn't much an option.
Here are a few recommendations though.

As far as membrane boards go though, I use a few I can list off for you.
HyperX Alloy Core: https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Alloy-Core-RGB-Comfortable/dp/B07HRNKTCM/ref=sr_1_2?crid=9PY2SHEHJTQZ&keywords=membrane+keyboard+60&qid=1569183969&s=videogames&sprefix=membrane+%2Cvideogames%2C150&sr=1-2
This is an all time favorite of mine simply for its ease of use and no frills, no mechanical switches but it has the RGB you're looking for.
The keycaps this uses are something you'll have to learn to get used to but otherwise this is a nice purchase.

Redragon K502 RGB Chiclet: https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-K502-Keyboard-Illuminated-Improved/dp/B00LSGKEC4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=9PY2SHEHJTQZ&keywords=membrane+keyboard+60&qid=1569184039&s=videogames&sprefix=membrane+%2Cvideogames%2C150&sr=1-4
Probably my most favorite board if you're into the simplistic look.
The RGB on this board doesn't blast through the keys offensively, it's more subtle and clean looking.
The typing experience is different and can be hit or miss depending on your typing style. If you thump the keys or hit them hard and fast you may wanna look at another board, but this is still an option if you're willing to take the time to get used to it.

NPET G11 87%: https://www.amazon.com/NPET-Keyboard-G10-Professional-Compatible/dp/B078754DCK/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=membrane+keyboard&qid=1569184333&s=videogames&sr=1-6
This is a cheap board but it's also one of the nicer boards I own that offers RGB and isn't going to wreck the wallet.
If you want more desk space and you like the look of some of the mechanical keyboards out there, this is one fantastic option as it offers more than what other membrane boards can offer and should have RGB settings that range in between one solid color to tessellation effects.

Again, hopefully this helps you find something.

I can recommend a small keyboard, with non flat keys! <- This is really important.
If you want a mechanical keyboard make sure your environment (gf, mom, brother, etc) is fine with the click click click sound because my gf went insane after one hour of 200+ apm clicking with a mechanical keyboard back in my golden days, y, this was the reason she even moved out of my apartment cause she couldn't relax -.-, the clicking was to heavy. Small keyboard, not flat, good pressure point. I don't like the black widow but this tournament edition looks pretty pretty good.

I'm talking about something like this:

I'm looking to buy my first mechanical keyboard ever (woo!) and I've found myself down to two choices:

this $56 Outemu blue switch (edited the link to actually lead to the outemu)

or the $80 Ducky One TKL

Both look great, but I can't find much information on Outemu switches vs Cherry switches. The RGB on the Outemu looks great, but the other one seems more reputable and reliable. Any insight would be appreciated, just trying to get the best value :D

I would say that your best bet would be a Bluetooth keyboard, either full size or folding.

I use a full size Logitech BT keyboard for both my Android and iPad devices. At just 11.5" it slips into a backpack or shoulder bag quite easily. The ones I have come with a cover case that doubles as a folding stand for the tablet, which is nice. You will find they are sold as being for Android, or for iPad, or for Windows, but all BT keyboards will work with all devices. Occasionally one will have special function keys for a particular device but if all you want to do is write then any will do.

However, I most often use a folding BT keyboard and a Nexus 4 phone.

You might think that a phone's screen is too small to write on but in landscape orientation it is just fine for banging out long emails or articles. The folding keyboard I have is almost full size and I have adjusted to the slightly different spacing of the keys.

I am a touch typist and on-screen keyboards simply do not work for me at all. I'd rather use a stick on wet clay than those things.

There are several folding keyboards on the market but if you can your hands on an iGo Stowaway you'll have the best. They have not been made in years but you can still find new (old) stock in original packaging. Be careful about the price. They should sell for about $150 but some people have been asking north of 300 dollars and getting it on eBay.

As I said, there are other folding keyboards but they don't have the rugged construction of the iGo and in some cases their keyboards are split on the hinge line in a way that makes efficient typing difficult. Read the reviews on Amazon.

If he doesn't have one already, a mechanical keyboard would be a great gift. They can be a bit pricey, but you can get one for ~100 dollars that is pretty decent; it'll making typing a much nicer experience. Specifically, I'd look for any keyboard which has "Cherry MX Brown" or "Cherry MX Blue" switches. The key switch determines how the keyboard feels, and how loud it is.

I have blues at home and browns for my keyboard at work and both options are solid. I prefer blues myself but they are loud, Browns feel similar but they don't have an audible click so they are much quieter.

Be wary of "like-mechanical" keyboard, that are basically just expensive membrane keyboard that try and mimic the mechanical feel.

Here are two pretty good options to get you started:

This may be a better question for r/mechanicalkeyboards however they didn't seem to have as much Q&A functionality as this sub does.

I'm looking to buy a Corsair Gaming K70 LUX RGB Mechanical Keyboard (link below) but I'm unsure of which keyboard style I should get. I went to Best Buy and was able to try the K65 in a Cherry MX Red version of a different Corsair keyboard and liked the feel and sound of it, but in research have read that the MX Browns are even quieter. Since there wasn't an MX Brown available for trial in stores I've visited I haven't been able to get any hands on experience to compare different types.

I'm looking for anyone with experience between the different versions of mechanical keyboards and how the sounds vary between the stealthier versions of mechanical keyboards like Blue and Brown. Ideally I would like to buy the quietest keyboard that also still has a good level of depression and 'feel' to pressing each key as it will be used for both work and gaming. What would be your recommendation that I should get knowing the information above?

Many thanks in advance for any replies or information.

The original one does not, but the new magic keyboard does charge with lightning.
Its smaller and more solid which are great, but is twice the price.
Another one worth looking into is this one by Anker. It’s advertised to work with iPads and I’ve heard great things about it, though I haven’t had the opportunity to try it out myself.

Looking at buying a new mechanical keyboard. I've owned a Corsair K90 for many years nw and have mostly loved it, but I think I would like something a little smaller and more "clicky" when typing.

I've been looking at tenkeyless keyboards with MX blue switches in the $100 $100-150 range. I primarily want to use it as a compact keyboard for typing. I've looked through the wiki and read some reviews but many of them were outdated/for older models. Through my research I found these 3 keyboards:

  • Corsair K65 $69 (Not ideal as it has red switches and is basically a compact version of my current keyboard)
  • Happy Hacking Lite2 $73 (I don't like the non-standard layout)
  • CM Storm Quickfire Rapid-i $99
  • MasterKey Pro S $113 (What's the difference between RGB and White versions?)
  • Code Keyboard $140 (I read the key caps wear out quickly and become glossy.)

Does anyone have suggestions to help convince me one way or maybe even introduce an entirely new option? Thanks!

I mean...yeah, obviously, but upgradability, modularity, and customization would be way better on a case like this.

u/thekillerwitcher · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I am searching for a mechanical keyboard with RGB lightning and a NUMPAD...
I prefer brown switches, even tho I have never tested them. I only tested Razer Green and Cherry Red one and I didn't liked bouth. Blue, because I didn't liked the noisy sound and I didn't liked the Red ones, because I really need a feedback, when I click, but friends told me brown one switches are a good hybrid. I have 100€ to spend and I found the TT ESPORTS Poseidon Z RGB Brown Switch , Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro L and the iKBC F108 RGB Double-Shot , but I still don't know if there are better keyboards one the market.
What do you think? Do you have any advices for me? Thanks!

Question 1: Are there any decent Cherry MX red/brown clones worth looking into? I find a lot of nice layout keyboards from mystery Chinese vendors, but I don't want an awful experience for half the price.

Question 2: Any recommendations on just the left side of a keyboard?

  • Number pad unecessary. Condensed navigation is fine.
  • No weird layouts. INSERT and DELETE close (or Fn overlap)
RIGHT SHIFT, RIGHT ALT, LEFT CONTROL, BACKTICK, 12 discrete FUNCTION KEYS.
  • Low profile key caps. (Spacebar 1.25cm. FN12 1.5cm.)
  • Quiet. Cherry red/brown or LP scissor switches. Light.

EDIT: I guess I'm looking for an 87 key or less keyboard. There are loads of them out there, but /r/mk people seem to be hating on them because the tactile response is different all over the keyboard. Here's some that I've been looking at.

    Reference:

  • 43cm https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0006JK9QK
  • Currently own this very low profile and quiet scissor switch kb.
  • Still working well after 7+ years of abuse.
  • It's too wide at 43cm and has an oddly condensed navigation pad.
  • xmodmapped Sweden/Finland key, Backslash, and Alt keys.
  • Silly bevel makes it even wider.

    Comparison:

  • 42cm https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01M4Q8TCX/
  • Demonstrates that a full keyboard fits within what I currently have. :/

Full navigation pad, no number pad:

  • 35.7cm https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01DBVGZSA/
  • Sane layout
  • These "Mechanical Eagle" keyboards seem really common, how are they?
  • Any options for "quiet" or "low profile" in this design? Perhaps minus the bevel?
  • Looks tall. Need ramp.

  • 35cm https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01EY9D2L6/
  • Even better than that mechanical eagle with no bevel
  • Concerned about quiet/low profile.
  • Looks tall. Need ramp

  • 34cm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E57PUNA/
  • Nope: Can't do Fn function keys and backtick.
  • However, apparently Cherry brown-like means quiet? This is a good sign!
  • This modified nav pad is neat, but a pointless tease.

Super compact (condensed navigation, no number pad):

  • 31cm https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01N01RO2R/
  • Layout looks really good (I don't use right control, can map mod+right alt as right_super)
  • delete and insert same key is cool af
  • Fn pause/print/scroll is also cool af

  • 31cm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DDFLFNE/
  • Even better layout. Scroll lock? (Can probably map around it)
  • I read some bad stuff about "ZORRO" switches.
  • looks slightly shorter than last one.
  • honestly, the best layout. I might buy and then just order a bag of nicer switches if it comes down to it.

  • 35cm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VITZ98/
  • excellent scale and arrangement.
  • delete and insert over backspace.
  • huge bevel, mostly awful design.

  • 35cm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QFOKOO/
  • excellent scale and arrangement.
  • delete top right.
  • cheap shit, don't make me do it.

EDIT: omg, I need to stop. I can't determine if these small layout keyboards can have their switches replaced or if new low profile keycaps are even an option.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.

I've finally picked up an Anker Ultra Compact Bluetooth Keyboard in the end.

It's absolutely perfect. Feels just like the Apple keyboard. The keys are slightly harder to press but it's a joy to use everyday. It's super slim, and the battery life looks good. I've had it for two weeks and it didn't ask for a charge yet.

The only thing that bugs me is that for some reason, it disconnects for a few seconds every 20 to 25 minutes. It's just three to five seconds, so it doesn't bother me THAT much, but it's a bit weird.

This Lenovo is great butttt, moving the mouse is a little "slow" small movements each time.

Not great for using android pocket pc's for example due to the the "touch work" needed - kinda swiping wit hthe lenovo isn't easy, I gotta press the left mouse button with 1 hand and do a fast movement on the mouse wit hthe other hand holding the lenovo and the thumb doing the moving and releasing the left mouse buton with the other hand's fingers at the same time.

For pc it's great, typing is comfortable and it has excellent multimedia buttons, basically the volume up down, play, next.

Here's a pretty cheap option: https://www.amazon.com/USB-Foot-Switch-Keyboard-Pedal/dp/B008MU0TBU

I've been pondering a bit about how you could make a fully functional setup using only your right hand and your feet...

If you had 3 foot pedals, you could bind two of them for strafe, scroll wheel to jump, and use the standard both mouse buttons for forward. That way you would only lack backpedalling, but a lot of ppl unbind that anyways...

For spells you would use the sidebuttons on the naga and the last pedal as a modifier, to have a total of 24 hotkeys.

This setup would probably require a bit of practise for the right hand, and a way to make sure the pedals don't slip around on the floor :)

Edit: Kinda unrelated to wow, but check out this right handed keyboard from Maltron: http://www.maltron.com/component/content/article/11.html :D

I bought a good backlit $20 Bluetooth keyboard exactly for this reason. I need keyboard shortcuts while I pen the screen.

How much will you be using it it's a laptop? Maybe skip the type cover for now and just et a $20 Bluetooth one to use when you're sat at a desk. There's no reason to buy the type cover if you're not going to use it as a laptop. If you're using it at a desk and as a tablet just get Bluetooth one. Save yourself $100+

You don't even need to get a cover kind. If you plan on using he sp as a tablet when not at a desk get a nice desktop keyboard.

Honestly I wish I'd saved the money since it doesn't sit well in lap anyway. I use the type cover don't get me wrong. But for just starting I'd suggest skipping it if you're going to be working st a desk and tablet mode away from the desk.

As for the trackpad. Buy the pen and use the touch screen with the desktop Bluetooth keyboard. It's far better than the trackpad anyway for all but a few things. Or use an inexpensive wireless mouse. You can get an amazon basic mouse (reminds me of the old intellimouse) for like $12 and it's great. It does use a small USB single so if you don't like that get Bluetooth mouse.

this is the keyboard I bought for use when penning at a desk. I wanted something small and portable. Battery life is about three months of use. Takes a short while to charge a few times a year.

I mean, it really depends on your budget and what you like. I've personally never bought into the "gaming peripheral" fad - but some people swear by them so it's whatever you prefer. I use a Filco TKL and the thing is amazing for both gaming and just general typing without any of the unnecessary stuff. The only thing you may want that this keyboard (and similar models) don't have is backlighting which that is a feature I can completely understand. There are minimalist mechanical keyboards that do have backlighting though like the Vortex Race. There's a newer model out now I believe, but they're also solid keyboards. While the price might seem high, these are the type of keyboards that will easily last you 10 or 20 years if you take care of them so they do pay for themselves.

I just bought myself the Tab S 8.4 and purchased one of Logitech's Bluetooth Tablet Keyboards with it. I hunted around for a keyboard case, but none of them really impressed me nor looked like they could withstand everyday wear-and-tear. The Logitech syncs up easily, works well with Android, and also feels great. Both the keyboard--which comes with a case--and the tablet take up hardly any space in my backpack, which is very important because I'll be using the tablet for all of my classes next semester along with the keyboard for any of my programming courses.

Judging from your replies in this thread, you dont like TVS gold, which is a very good budget mechanical keyboard with good keys. So lets consider other options.

First, you need to be specific. At this price point you need to sacrifice one thing for another. If you want looks you probably cant have mechanical aspect. If you want mechanical then you cant have looks. Most people buy mechanical keyboard because of the "Mechanical Keys" and not for the looks anyways.

Anyways, this are the keyboards you might want to check out as they are closer to your budget but not of "good" quality (both of these are knockoffs)

Cosmic Byte CB-GK-07

Zebronics Max

And if you want the "looks" keyboard without the mechanical aspect then

Redragon Karura (chiclet keys)

Circle Adroit X7C

Also note this out that even if this keyboards are not mechanical that dosent mean they are "bad". Mechanical is considered superior and favoured by most because of its accuracy and durability. But many people also prefer mushy keys like chiclet or hybrid keys.

I see.

Personally I would recommend a mechanical keyboard to anyone who spends a decent amount of time on a computer.

This is one of the cheaper make/models but still has good reviews, also a friend has been using one for years and is quite happy with it.

EDIT: So apparently there is some weird mix up. This is the keyboard i'm familiar with, a bit more expensive but still on the cheaper side compared to other mech keybaords. I thought my original link was to the same keyboard but with blue switches, after looking it up apparently they are not.

It is possibly the cheapest mechanical keyboard I've ever seen, but it performs as well as my previous one which I paid about twice as much for. It looks pretty and everyone wants to play with it when they come over and see it for the first time. I love it, but I also wouldn't mind having a smaller keyboard. Might be getting one of these next.

What I usually do whenever there's no Acestream links for Boxing but plenty of browser links. I turn on my Bluetooth iPazzport remote , open Puffin Browser from my Mecool M8S Pro L Android TV box and type the address out, hit play and put it in fullscreen. I've watched a couple of boxing matches like this. TheiPazzport has a keyboard and obviously will make life easier when typing web addresses out. For those that are curious, works well on Firesticks as well.

If you truly care about getting a mechanical keyboard, you should really at least glance at this: http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html

To quote the section on the blue switches:
>Cherry MX Blue switches are the best cherry switch for typing. The tactile bump can easily be felt, and the resistance is similar to your average keyboard.

>Although many people find them just fine for gaming, some don't like the fact that the release point is above the actuation point. This can cause some trouble with double-tapping. This is usually the case with someone who has experienced other mechanical switches before hand.

>As a note: this switch actually has a peak force of 60g, it is 50g at the point of actuation. This is due to the design of the Cherry switch itself.

I spent a good two months shopping around for my mechanical keyboard and ended up with the Filco Majestouch 104, and after a quick search it seems they aren't in production anymore. It appears there are now Majestouch-2
which are more expensive than what I paid for my Majestouch 104.

u/neopran · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

For me, it's the build quality and the feel of it. It definitely feels a lot better than a pre-made PC keyboard, obviously lol. Also, I don't need all the extras with it since I don't use them. Don't need an LCD, don't need the macros, media buttons and whatever else. I don't even need the backlight but it's there and I never use it.
The build quality is fantastic and of course the switches don't even compare to a lowly membrane keyboard. For me something like this is perfection. :D

u/kylestephens54 · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I am just generally confused as to what keys are *actually* quiet but give that same mechanical, clickly feel to them. Are Browns actually quiet? I've never used them before but would like to buy a 'queiter' keyboard for work so that I can enjoy using a mechanical keyboard at work.

For reference, I bought a cheap mechanical keyboard which I have enjoyed thus far but it has blues:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M301Q50/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is definitely too loud for work. My work's IT hands out these keyboards which I am currently using:

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-FBA_884116173823-Keyboard-KB212-B/dp/B00U7QJ1DY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525184631&sr=8-2&keywords=kb212-b+keyboard&dpID=41W53hSjsvL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

It's clacky, but not in a mechanical keyboard kind of way. Does anyone have suggestions on a MX brown/knock off for under 50 that is actually quiet? Seems like most of the time i find a keyboard that fits what I am looking for most people say the keyboard is terrible.

u/T0rgo · 10 pointsr/gaming

The Das Keyboard doesn't use buckling springs but Cherry MX switches. It's still great though.

Another good one is the Filco Majestouch. It uses the same switches as the Das but looks less like a PS3 http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Keyboard-FKBN104M-EFB2/dp/B004Z0XR2O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1311057673&sr=8-2

Oh yeah and I think both the Das and the Filco have NKRO (n-key roll over) which means you can press as many buttons down as you can and all the keypresses will register. So they are suitable for gaming.

u/_Panda · 1 pointr/macgaming

Get a Filco Majestouch. I have the tenkeyless version, and it's pretty amazing. I liked to the brown keys (tactile feedback, not too much clicky sound), but they also have blue and possibly black/red if you're interested.

Works fine with macs. I swapped the positions of the windows and alt keycaps to fit the usual mac layout, then you just have to go into keyboard settings and swap them there are well.

u/TheAverageOne · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Ah, you're right! Sorry for misreading. That said, for the same price you can get a Cooler Master MasterKey Pro L or an iKBC F108 for the same price or cheaper, which are RGB full size keyboards with arguably better build quality and keycaps (although the CM board does not have PBT keycaps). They also have standard keycap sizes (as opposed to the nonstandard bottom row that Corsair uses), so switching out keycaps is much easier.

They're a little more boring looking, sure, but I'd say they're a better value for their build quality and keycap compatibility alone.

Then again, if you don't really value that, and care more about the looks of the case (which I used to be a fan of myself!) and the software integration with games, I suppose there isn't anything wrong with going with the Corsair board. I can't change your mind there.

u/mrkhiggz · 1 pointr/ipad

I also got the New iPad 2017. Still not many options for keyboard cases last I checked. What I ended up doing was getting this case and this keyboard. Neither were very expensive so if I find a better solution in the future I won't feel too bad replacing them rather quickly.

The case has the smart cover feature where it will unlock or lock your screen when opening and closing. The plastic shell keeps it from getting scuffed and the front cover folds to make a stand.

I have also found it to be convenient not having the keyboard attached to the case actually. There have been times where I didn't want the keyboard directly in from of the iPad and having that flexibility over a "laptop configuration" is surprisingly nice. I don't take my iPad out of my house very often so far so the two piece thing hasn't been an issue for portability for me yet. Also, the bluetooth keyboard can be paired with iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac so if I do replace it for the iPad, I have other devices I could use it with.

u/gobblegourd · 2 pointsr/keyboards

I would highly recommend a new Logitech keyboard. The Logitech K750 is fantastic (I used it for over a year before upgrading to a mechanical keyboard). It's solar powered; you literally never have to worry about charging it. There are no downsides to this. It really works well, even in my shaded room. The layout is great and includes a function key with plenty of media controls.

You might also be interested in the Logitech K810. It's tenkeyless, backlit, and uses bluetooth so you can connect it to just about any device including your phone or tablet. I haven't used it personally but considered buying it at one point. It looks pretty sleek and lets you easily switch between devices if keyboard shortcuts.

u/myrrh_maid · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I have o-rings on my keyboard at work -- a Ducky with MX Reds -- out of deference to my co-workers. The person who gave me the o-rings didn't know what kind/size they were; but I believe they are these Rosewill 0.2mm o-rings, which would make them similar to your WASD red o-rings.

As far as keyfeel, I actually quite like them. They don't make the reds feel like a rubber dome at all. Rather, they soften the keypress a little bit, which feels nice; and they lower the sound a bit -- the "thock" sound of a key hitting the bottom is transformed into a softer "thud" type of sound. (Of course, typing more softly also reduces the noise.) I like the board without o-rings just fine, too; and if I weren't using the board at work, I probably wouldn't bother with the rings.

Here's a video that compares the typing sound of reds without o-rings, and then with.

u/Acknown3 · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Das's are overrated, but WASD's are awesome. If you have the money though, I would grab a Filco. If you want to cheap out, grab a Rosewill.

You also want to do research on your switches. Basically, blue is for typing, black is for gaming, and browns are for both. There are other switches like red and clear, but they aren't as common.

This is what I would recommend.

I just got the $15 slim wireless one (batteries instead of rechargeable batteries) and I love it. The $20 one can be charged with USB. Honestly, it looks like Apple's Magic Keyboard and it feels pretty good for its price.

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Rechargeable/dp/B00PIMKN1Q/ref=dp_ob_title_def

u/Quakemz · 6 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

You should check out the Plugable TKL. I have one I'm working on a review for right now. It's quite possibly the best board in the $50> range. Steel plate, doubleshot keycaps, white backlighting. It's hard to find all of that at this price range. There is also a full-sized version for $10 more.

The one downside is, because this line of boards is new, it only comes with Outemu Blue switches currently, which are okay, assuming you don't mind clicky switches.

The Magicforce is also a decent choice. Doesn't have as many features or as nice of build quality, but it's $5 cheaper for the basic model with Outemu switches. Comes in Blue, Black or Brown switches, with more options on the more expensive models.

Like another user suggested, you can head on over to a secondhand market like /r/mechmarket, eBay, etc and hunt down something "nicer" like a Cooler Master Quickfire for $50 or so, assuming you don't mind used items.

u/s32 · 7 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Damn, people actually prefer these things ಠ_ಠ

I can help you all day with a high quality mechanical keyboard which would be definitely recommended, but the only flat keyboard I can even think of is that apple one. I have no idea how you can prefer to use a flat keyboard if you are on the computer for any extended period of time. If you come around and would be okay with a normal keyboard, I'd recommend a tenkeyless keyboard, which are more ergonomic IMO. Check out the OC keyboard FAQ

I recommend a Filco Majestouch with cherry MX browns to anybody looking for a great BIFL keyboard.

u/ratsroloc · 1 pointr/keyboards

Honestly given the range of your budget it might be a better idea to save up a bit more for a Filco Majestouch TKL or a Leopold FC750R. Both boards seem to be really well received on this sub in terms of build quality, they aren't that much more than $100, and they come in a variety of switch types.

But if you're just looking for something as cheap as possible to replace your current board you might want to look into something like this. You could also look on /r/mechmarket to try to find a used Quickfire TK to replace the one you have.

u/tiperet · 2 pointsr/ffxiv

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Bluetooth-Easy-Switch-Keyboard-iPhone/dp/B0099SMFP2/

Works well, nice to type on. You can also save 3 Bluetooth presets so you can keep it synced with an iPad or something. I usually play in a dark room, so the backlight really helps, as well.

u/ChipCharge · 1 pointr/LGG3

I love this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009JPBPWO . I mostly use it with my LG tablet, but it works fine with my G3 as well. I use it constantly, and find it does really well. The case/stand is really clever, too. You have to download the null kb to use it (or any bluetooth kb) conveniently--at least for switching back to the on-screen kb. Maybe Lollipop handles this better? Pairing is trivial, and I've had it 3 months and still haven't changed batteries.

u/ARCFXX · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you want backlighting, I would recommend the IKBC F108 or IKBC F87 (without numpad, I really recommend downsizing unless you use it a lot).

Full RGB, better built than the big brands, and comes with one of the nicest sets of keycaps around, that won't wear out in no time or break like the cheap ones you'll find on Razer and the like.

I got this - it works OK but the keys pop out easy if you, for instance, drive to Mom's with it in your backpack.

I specifically looked for size, I wanted the smallest I could go, so it'd, y'know, fit into a backpack. There's probably cheaper or better ones out there, though.

I can't speak to the K63 specifically but I've had an excellent experience after installing Rosewill silicone O-rings on a K70 and K95. To give you an idea of how much of a difference they make, listen carefully to a mechanical keyboard when you type a single letter. There are actually two clicks: a louder click when you press the key down and a quieter click when you release it and the spring causes it to snap back into position. Normally the first click is the loudest of the two. After the O-ring installation, the second click becomes the louder of the two because the O-ring dampens the first click so much.

In addition to sound, I just like how they feel with the O-rings as well. It's less of plastic bashing against plastic and more of a soft, premium feel. However, some folks (particularly those with Cherry MX Blues) prefer a more "clicky" feel and may find O-rings too spongy for their tastes. YMMV.

You can use those O-rings on any mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches. However, note that there are different packs with carrying numbers of O-rings in each pack depending on the type of keyboard you have. It's possible that the size might vary as well based on keyboard/switch type, but I don't know. Of course, they're only $10 so you won't be out very much money if you decide you don't like them. ;-)

u/robeschi · 10 pointsr/ipad

I mostly use the Apple Pencil with Notability or LiquidText. I use Goodnotes a little. Some of my professors use Google Drive, so I need to use those apps from time to time. I also like Outlook for email, iBooks and Kindle Reader for different texts. Duet Display turns my iPad into a secondary screen for my MacBook Pro. I use Scanner Pro to turn all my syllabi and other handouts into PDFs. iStudiez Pro helps keep my schedule in order, and Quizlet helps me study. I use Affinity Photo for processing my Nikon RAW files ( I let my Adobe CC subscription lapse, I just don't find myself using my dSLR that much lately.) I also use a MIDI keyboard with Garage Band and Pro Metronome for piano practice when I don't have access to a real piano/piano lab/practice room.

I keep games and other entertainment apps off the iPad since I'm trying to study and don't want to make it any easier for me to goof off.

Case, Screen Protector, Apple Pencil sleeve, tether to keep my adapter on my cable, stand, keyboard, and holder for using my iPad as a second screen for my MacBook Pro. I also use Anker cables, charger port, and portable charger.

u/Jairou · 1 pointr/tablets

If you'd like a brand to look at, I can vouch for Moko. They make thick and thin cases, and a few hard "shell" types. Personally I prefer the thicker, softer ones, and mine also rotates (I find it easier to type on, say, Reddit in portrait mode and easier to type school assignments in landscape).

For keyboards, it depends more on how much you're willing to spend. Amazon has the Logitech for ~$40 (also my choice). The Microsoft Wedge is also a popular, excellent keyboard. And less popular but something a friend of mine uses is the Periboard 806. There are plenty of "generic" bluetooth keyboards for $15-$20 or so too.

> Yes I do use a mouse

That's a problem for most people. Or at least for me, and I'm projecting my desires as those of the normal streaming service watcher.

I want to sit on my couch with a small remote control and be able to control everything. I don't want to have to figure out using a mouse on a couch. I don't want a trackball (something like this is a compromise that might work, but I once had a similar device, the Logitech diNovo Mini and it really wasn't very good). I don't want to wave my arm around with an airmouse (I hated the Wii interface 14 years ago, and I definitely don't want that for my main interface in 2019). I need a remote that can handle simple functions:

  • Media playback (play/pause/stop/ffwd/skip fwd/rev/skip back)
  • Menu navigation and show selection
  • Moving between apps

Most W10 apps fall down on the second item. Netflix certainly does. Browser-based playback usually fails all three.

HTPCs are great. I love my HTPC. I use it every single day, for TV/DVR, for gaming, and for local media files/Plex (PlexKodiConnect is amazing). I can even use it for Netflix, sort of, with Kodi integration (there are some problems with tracking played status on Netflix, it doesn't support 4k very well yet, there are sometimes weird errors that take the addon down for several days, etc). But for most streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, D+, HBO Go), I switch over to my Xbone. Because apps there are intended for 10' consumption, and thus satisfy all my control requirements above.

Thanks for the suggestion! I am a fan of that subreddit, but I want to post a bigger/nicer picture over there once I re-do my desk environment.

I actually replaced my blackwidow with this keyboard! haha. The keyboard I have is a CM Storm Rapid-i, Cherry Brown Switches (LED backlight, TKL version). Link here:

If you want a cheaper version, I suggest the non-LED version, which comes in full or TKL:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VDKLLM/ref=s9_simh_gw_g147_i1_r?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0DBQRZDHR08NPZRQ1NNH&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

Great keyboard! Much smaller than my blackwidow which has allowed for way more space on my desk. I also inserted small o-rings to make the noise quieter, a suggestion if you want something a little less noisy. Regarding the keypad- I thought I was going to miss it, but it turns out I prefer the extra space much more. I will say though that I miss having the extra macro keys to the left as I used them in my gaming, but I quickly adapted with little difference.

Edit: The keyboard I currently own was $99 when I purchased it but it is priced right now at $120, Im sure you can find a cheaper version elsewhere if you wait/do some research

Long post, sorry...

I'm a programmer looking at getting started with blank mechanical keyboards, my current one is rather old and dusty. (entry level, less than $100, preferably even less)

I know this board isn't technically "recommended" but I was thinking about buying the Plugable keyboard since it has outemu blue switches (I've heard they're about as good as cherry) and white backlighting (don't want any other colors, as my pc is white/black themed). Then I would attach a blank Max keycap set.

My main question is, is the keycap set compatible with the keyboard? I'm not sure about the size of spacebar, but the amazon page says keyboard is compatible with ANSI layout keycaps. Also any other recommendations for board/keycaps would be helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to read this long post

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Mechanical-Enthusiasts-Backlighting-Double-shot/dp/B01M301Q50/ comes with Gaote blues (widely regarded as superior to cherry mx blue; they are more tactile). The ugly logo comes off with alcohol if you want to get rid of that.

I just went through this: I all but fell in love with Apple's Magic Keyboard 2, but couldn't stand the lack of 10-key or nav-cluster. I found the Logitech K750 for $54. It's bigger (but it has to be to fit a 10-key and nav-cluster) and it's solar. The solar wasn't a must, but they don't make a non-solar equivalent).

The weight, feel, and thickness are all spot-on for the Apple offering. It connects via a Unifying receiver, and apparently the batteries last forever, charging even on office or other artificial-light.

And at 1/3" thick, it's on the Apple diet for sure. I was all but resigned to the fact that I had to decide between a $99 option Apple keyboard, without some key features, or a big bloated clunky Logitech. My eyes have seen there's a 3rd option.

I use a pi3 for this exact function. Currently use my main desktop as the plex server, and wanted to be able to watch local media on a larger tv screen.

A samsung smart blu-ray player, with the plex app, was pretty slow. The xbox 360 plex app ran better and didn't skip video, but it seemed overkill to have to turn it on just to watch tv/movies. So I loaded raspplex onto a pi, and have by using that ever since. If you do this, invest in a wireless keyboard like this and you'll be good to go.

Razer's Kailh switches are sort of a knock-off of the Cherry MX switches.

Your common switches that you'll probably find in keyboards under $150 are Red, Blue, Brown, and Black.

This video actually gives you a pretty good idea of the sound, and you can almost tell how they'll feel.

This image shows the technical difference in how they feel.

Since I'm not familiar with the Kaihl switches, this is the best I can do for you: If they were clicky, they were closer to Blues. If they were bumpy, they were closer to Browns. If they were just linear and had no tactile feedback, they were probably close to Reds.

You can even try this to decide on the switch, since you probably don't want to invest so much money on a keyboard you won't completely like. It covers the 4 common switches.

Once you decide which switches you want, you need to decide what size you want. Usually Tenkeyless keyboards like the one I linked will be a little less in price, but you'd have to give up your numpad. If you're okay with that, then I recommend it since it's also more ergonomic.

This is the back lit version of the keyboard I linked you. This one comes with Blue switches.

Edit: So I just looked into the Razer Kaihl switches, and the closest thing that you'll get is MX Cherry Blues (for clicky switches) and MX Cherry Reds (for silent switches). Most people actually prefer Cherry to Kaihl.

Do you care about noise? If not, Plugable 87 key is probably the best budget option less than $50. Other wise you will need to compromise on something. I would say compromise on the F row and get a Magicforce68.

u/Metaldrake · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Filco MJ2, Ducky One TKL, Quickfire Rapid, FC750.

If you don't mind doing a bit of modding, I think the Quickfire Rapid will actually be the best option (despite being the cheapest). Costing $70, and leaving you with $100 to spend on stuff like a Frosty Flake Controller ($35) to make it fully programmable, custom USB cable, aftermarket set of keycaps, or you can even save up a bit more for a TEX Aluminium Case ($150)

u/RColinTaylor · 2 pointsr/buildapc

You can do much better in terms of gaming keyboard if you get past the usage of LED's and macro keys.

Filco which is a bit higher but top end: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Keyboard-FKBN104M-EB2/dp/B004VKUSG6

Leopold which is cheaper, and better in many regards: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rcab

Das which is equally priced and better in all regards: http://www.daskeyboard.com/

All three of these choices have the option of picking a switch other than (Blue).

u/gliph · 2 pointsr/processing

The simplest way to do this is to have boolean variables for all user key actions, like:

boolean movingUp = false;

Set it to true in keyPressed and false in keyReleased. Use it (but never change it) in your draw() function.

I recommend handling ALL inputs like this, not just those that "need" it. (note that you'll need to handle "event-like" keys (fire the weapon) in a different way than "state-like" keys (move up, etc), probably).

Also note! Not all keyboards are perfect. In fact, most keyboards have issues when trying to press more than one key at once because of their hardware layout. It's different on most keyboards. If you have two players, hooking up two keyboards to the computer will solve this problem.

u/moh18one · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Actually, especially with the Black Friday, the best keyboard you can get without spending too much is the IKBC F108 RGB that is currently on sale at Amazon.com for $99.

The stock keycaps are really good (PBT doubleshot) and the quality build is on par with Ducky, which is better than CoolerMaster.

He has a G510. It's what I'm using and the button layout under the screen looks the exact same. F7 below the first of the 4 buttons in that row, and F9 below the last one. It's my first G series keyboard and I'm loving it. I also have a Logitech k750, and I like the way the keys and key press feel on that keyboard. I wish my G510 had the same keys as the k750, one can only dream though.

Amazon sells an Anker Bluetooth keyboard that is excellent. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Wireless-Bluetooth-Rechargeable-Compatible/dp/B00PIMKN1Q/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1504235194&sr=8-5&keywords=anker+bluetooth+keyboard

It has a rechargeable lithium ion battery. I've had mine for four months and have only charged it once since delivery. There are probably better keyboards in the $150 plus price range but from what I could find after researching sub $50 keyboards this offered the best overall experience.

u/ottosunday · 1 pointr/battlestations

The Rosewill RK-6000 is the least expensive mechanical keyboard I know and is supposed to be pretty good as well.

Decent Amazon and Newegg reviews as well as being sub $50

u/Scorps · 3 pointsr/videos

Hotkeys to my knowledge, there are some games that have plugins I think that can hook certain cutscenes directly into the timer to change them but I'm pretty sure a lot of streamers and serious speedrunners actually rig up something like this and use it as a split button

u/Jhubbz86 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

I bought this maybe about 6 months ago for almost full price and I love it!! I ended up putting clear dampening rings under all the keys to make it a bit more silent. I also ended up getting this key-cap kit so I have a bit more grip while I'm playing games. I've never used the small wrist rest that comes with the kit, so I can't really comment on that.

The software is ok, kinda finicky at times. You can download custom LED lighting patterns from a forum, although I don't remember what it is at the moment.

Only thing I would like, which I believe that had on previous versions, is a USB pass-through.

This is also my first mech, so I don't have anything to compare it to, besides the Logi G710+ of which, I really wasn't a fan.

I didn't have to go through any importing luckily. Keyboard Company sends some of their stock of the new Filcos to Amazon.com for United States buyers. Used my Amazon Prime to get overnight shipping for only $4!

Although I did import a completely blank set of keycaps for it. I've been eagerly waiting for them to arrive.

TBH, unless you're playing at a very high level, literally anything will do. Because I use my computer for basically everything in my life (I'm a CS Major at Uni) I've put a little more money into my keyboard than I'd recommend for basically anyone. You'd be fine with a basic membrane keyboard/laser mouse.

I'm personally running a corsair k70 keyboard with brown switches and a logitech g502 mouse, with Corsair VOID's as my headset. As much as I love my keyboard, mouse, and headset, let me say this in no uncertain terms: There is absolutely no reason to spend 250 dollars out the gate on peripherals. A lot of local stores (best buy I know has a couple) have little shelves in the gaming peripherals aisle where you can try things out. But you could seriously just use the standard dell membrane keyboard and laser mouse. I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but I seriously recommend just getting your basic office keyboard/a decently comfortable mouse

u/dowsha032 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Oh this one looks nice. Thanks for the recommendation. I've been searching a little more and i bumped on these. [Ducky One TKL RGB] (https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1754) and [Filco Majestouch-2] (https://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Keyboard-FKBN104M-EB2/dp/B004VKUSG6). So I've also changed my decision, it can be TKL as well. It doesn't matter. But honestly I can not see any differences between I don't know, MK Fission and Ducky One TKL or even Filco as for the mechanism, I mean they're all MX Cherry and ABS Keycaps (btw aro those better than PBT?) . So now it all comes to the looks and the design? Plastic or aluminum...

I was going to get the WASDKeyboards O-Rings, but they were out of stock on Amazon so I got these. I am not at all disappointed. They feel great on reds, and you get enough for two 60% keyboards.

u/noroadsleft · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Doubt you're going be able to fit both a keyboard and mouse in that budget unless you're willing to skimp on one or the other.

The Velocifire TKL01 is the cheapest backlit keyboard I know of at $30, but the word is the switches are terrible. The EagleTec KG010 is $40 and the switches should be okay. For $42 you could get a Plugable 87 which would be my choice at this budget (and tenkeyless is better than fullsize anyway).

You could skimp on the mouse (which is much easier to do anyway) which means being able to afford a better mechanical keyboard.

u/kol13190 · -3 pointsr/hardware

Check out /r/keyboards

They're are different keyboards for different people but most people seem to enjoy the DAS Keyboard. There are other kinds such as the Filco, but the most silent keyboard should be found in the /r/keyboards area.

u/EAghost · 1 pointr/buildapc

Happy to!

if you have the money set aside for it, I can't really argue much against it, especially since you have Microcenter as the supplier. I had to fight against the urge to buy 4790K for $250 myself lol, but it seems you're in a better position to treat yourself to it; just know that in your case its a luxury, not necessity.

I'd suggest browns since they have some of that rewarding feedback in touch and sound. In reality these keyboards aren't THAT noisy (all keyboards make some), but that changes in the dead of night. You could also purchase a full set of o rings that dampen the 'clack' from bottoming out, further reducing sound. I bought these for when I may need to quiet my blues down: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K73IE1C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are a lot of great choices out there. Logitech's K811 is also a great choice with backlit keys and allows three device profiles. The more you look, the more you'll realize that you're paying a premium price to have matching colors, slim profile, backlit keys and aluminum finish.

u/JammySTB · 2 pointsr/keyboards

Using AutoHotkey, you can write a simple script that will give you media keys on any keyboard you want.

The Filco MJ2 is a great keyboard and as long as you're happy with AutoHotkey, it's what I would reccommend.

u/jonadair · 1 pointr/ipad

An annoyance with the K380 is that Fn and control are swapped from the normal Apple layout. Otherwise I really like mine. There is a K811 that has the Apple layout but I think it's discontinued and crazy pricey second-hand.

Anker has a cheap rechargeable keyboard that's a bit like a cross between the two Apple Magic Keyboards. It has the form factor of the newer one but taller keys with more motion like the original Magic Keyboard. But real Magic Keyboard 2's sometimes go for about $50 refurbished on Amazon.

u/hurrimmanobody · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'm having difficulty choosing my first mechanical keyboard. I was set on getting Corsair but now I'm back and forth between a couple at the moment, but still considering/open to some others. Using with a Mac but building my PC soon (just FYI).

I understand the dislike of Corsair and Razer due to the non-standard bottom row. However, I do like the dedicated media keys and the use of software to control the RGB is great, but suppose they aren't necessary.

Ideally, I would like an RGB keyboard and think I'm settled on brown switches. Media keys could be with a function key and not dedicated. And still kind of not sure about needing a full sized keyboard, but thinking I do want to have the arrow keys which is why I chose the MK Disco and iKBC.

u/CareerRejection · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

What is your budget then? Does it have to be a TKL? Or will a smaller variant work as well? Example is the leopold fc660m here. The TKL variant fc7850r is a bit more expensive but it's along the same lines (just out of stock ATM). You can check out filco as well here just I feel that the Leopold's are better IMHO.

u/SpinahVieh · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

o/
Not OP, but personally I like recommending the Quickfire Rapid-i as a beginner's board.
It's backlit, has media keys, looks pretty decent and is fairly well built.
If you decide to dive deeper, you can get custom keycaps on this board (as it has a standard bottom row, unlike Corsair/Razer keyboards). There are also custom cases for this keyboard, mostly those by Norbauer.
Its' only real downside is that the LEDs apparently tend to die (note: I've had mine for 2 years now and no dead LEDs).
If that's not sexy for you, please tell me what you are looking for. I'd love to help you :)

This should do as the squashball in australia
as for the DIY clutch, it was a USB Pedal

the USB pedal looks a bit crappy, but it actually does the job, really well! you can also do some DIY of yourself to connect it to the DFGT pedal set and make it sideways so it matches position of the other pedals. Or maybe buy a metal pedal face, and then some type of stand/holder, attach that to the usb pedal, and stick on some plastic/metal base and add the metal pedal on top and that will make an actual pedal! but with short travel. It's a really good option for those who don't want to spend lots of $$$ on a new pedal set.

u/fukitok · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Crazy build man. Awesome, but crazy! You and I have the same mouse!

Question: Do you know of any keyboards like the DeathStalker that have white and/or blue lights instead of green? I love chiclet keyboards, but I can't find a full chiclet keyboard of similar quality that has the right backlights. I ended up going with the Redragon Karura which is great for lights, media controls, and a chiclet experience, but the typing kind of sucks. Like kind of really sucks; no scissor keys, and the keys feel like they need lubed in order to work right. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Either way that's a phenomenal setup.

Not sure if anyone will see this after a month, but I have an update to this post:

I downloaded Evernote and bought a 20$ Android-compatible bluetooth keyboard from amazon (this one, if curious: https://www.amazon.com/Arteck-HB030B-Universal-Bluetooth-Rechargeable/dp/B00X5P8BJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485617570&sr=8-1&keywords=artek+bluetooth+keyboard).

Works great. Types with seemingly no delay or lag. I don't love that Evernote doesn't have an autocorrect feature (that I can find) but that's an issue with the software.

So now I can use the Kindle as an ad hoc laptop-tablet to type my prep notes on and write with.

The only thing I cannot do that I had hoped is stream the Ambient Sound Mixer App to my bluetooth speaker. But I did find my old iphone 4 and DL'd the ASM app which streams the ambient sounds just fine.

All in all, not a bad investment: 40$ for the Kindle Fire and 20$ for the BT keyboard.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Rosewill RK-6000 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Programmable Keys Anti-Ghosting Feature and Laser Printed Keys https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G505M4S/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_NQlmxbMZ824ZR

It's pretty shitty, but that's probably the best you'll get for $30.

u/Hughtub · -10 pointsr/minimalism

Why didn't you just get rid of the keyboard too? It takes up a bit of space there on your desk.

Perfect example of aesthetic minimalism (anti-minimalism) choosing looks over higher functionality (real minimalism).

A real minimalist keyboard is the ultra thin Logitech K750 solar-powered. or any of the Apple keyboards. They are volumetrically minimal, while retaining the utility of communicating what each key does. Anti-minimalism often trades functionality for form. Minimalism considers optimal functionality to be the most aesthetic form.

I think I saw a rosewill mechanical keyboard on amazon for $50 on sale. Not backlit, but rosewill is a pretty solid brand. I'll edit this post if I can find it

Here it is

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G505M4S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1416887101&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40

u/SwammerDo · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Something like these will be good enough. Also the fact they are clear won't affect the backlighting as much.

They reduce the travel slightly but if you want even less travel you can stack them. You probably don't need to use an o-ring on every single key so you should have enough to do the most important keys.

u/imatschoolyo · 1 pointr/geek

Gah. I want a mechanical keyboard, but I have had too many spills to warrant the cost. I'm pretty good about no food near the keyboard, but cats have a mind of their own, forcing me to resort to a washable keyboard.

u/DapperDroidLifter · 1 pointr/ipad

I purchased an Arteck Universal keyboard for $19 off Amazon, it's backlit (colors can be changed), has many shortcuts for you, rechargeable and is really a joy to use. After spending the amount I did on my iPad Pro, I wanted an affordable keyboard and I think this is one of the better ones in the lower price range.

I'll try to keep tabs on everything but let me know if there are any errors or price updates. And as a side note, I'm actually getting downvotes for this? I can't see how there could possibly be a sane explanation for that.

EDIT: Updated 7:00pm EST!! Let me know if there's anything you see and I'll put it in here!

EDIT: I've put everything new as of Jan 11, 4:00pm in bold. Also, check this post on RedFlagDeals for a great big list of deal

EDIT: Its all over everyhone. Hope you snagged something cool beyond bitter disappointment this year!**

PC specs:

AMD A8-7600 (nothing special but I don't really need the CPU power. Graphics compute cores disabled)

8GB Corsair Vengaence DDR3 1866

Gigabyte Windforce 280X 3GB GDDR5

PNY XLR8 240GB SSD for OS + WD Caviar Green 2TB for Media/Page file + 500GB Seagate for Games

LG 25UM58-p 1080p ultrawide OC'd to 75 hz. Doesn't have speakers, but does have a headphone out, so I run a cable from the monitor to the amp to get audio when playing PS4 games.

Mouse is a James Donkey.

Keyboard is a knock off E-Element with Outemu blue switches, Keycaps replaced because the font on the stock ones is terrible.

It depends on what you're looking for in a keyboard. That said, that one would be great, I'm sure.

Also, I was shopping for myself and found the first keyboard you posted for sale without the aluminum case:

Get a wireless keyboard. Maybe something like this or this. Just make sure that a) it works with your operating system and PC and a) the wireless connection to your PC is strong enough to work without breaks if your PC stands farther away from your TV or is blocked off by something from where you're sitting.

u/RetPallylol · 7 pointsr/gaming

You don't need to spend $200 to get a good mechanical keyboard nowadays. I bought this one for $26 on a flash sale and this $37 one is pretty well regarded as far as cherry mx clones go.

I was also coming from a membrane keyboard from a pre-built HP computer from 2003. The difference is night and day. There's no way I can go back to membrane now.

I purchased this keyboard from Amazon and it works extremely well with my iPad. No lag, very lightweight and the backlight is great for typing in the dark. It also has a long battery life and doesn't take long to recharge, I go days before charging. The keyboard is only $20, the plus side of ordering from Amazon is that if you don't like it you can always return it and get your money back. I would recommend you give this keyboard a try.

I've really been considering the corsair K70 RBG. It is a little pricier, and that is why I haven't bit the bullet yet. Trying to convince my wife that I "need" it for school. Any thoughts about it? Are there keyboards leagues ahead for the same price? I do prefer more of the modern look than the old retro IBM look so far (I'm easily convinced at this point though, there are some really neat boards with the custom keys, but I won't be putting in that type of money for some while).

I do want a full board with keypad. I've always had it, so it is convenient.

No macro keys, but I think your best bet would be something similar to this.

Yeah, I can see that. I don't play any first person shooters so I use a game controller for all most every game. If I'm playing an emulator I usually use of controller that's made for that console (GameCube, PS1,2,3 like that). It's a full time HTPC as well so I use this remote from the couch.
