I play exclusively on pc, on TV, from my couch/lazy boy, with 360 controller, audio through 5.1 surround sound reciever.
It's not only possible, it's relatively easy. Hdmi (from pc) to audio reciever, then hdmi to TV. Done.
I don't ever use a mouse; I use this to navigate websites, desktop etc.. and 360 controller to game. (That keyboard is ~$25)
I use my 59" TV as a main monitor and a 24" monitor as my second monitor (usually for Pandora while I game)
Feel free to ask me any other questions.
Edit: it should also be noted, if your friend plays a lot of multiplayer first person shooters, he might wanna figure out a k&m setup as controller users get absolutely destroyed by k&m.
Logitech K400 is more of a small-sized keyboard rather than mini, but is great for the living room if you need something you can actually type on.
This is exactly what I use: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419200459&sr=1-1&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard
To defend power buttons though, I have this keyboard for my living room TV's PC that kind of functions like a remote control. The power button on it is quite useful.

you said he uses a TV as his monitor, does that mean that he's sitting on a couch or bed when he's using the computer? If so, Logitech has a keyboard with a laptop style touchpad on one side, the k400, and it's only like $30. As with every other Logitech product I have used, the quality is fantastic. In my case, I only really use the computer attached to my TV as a media player, and some light internet browsing, so having a regular mouse was unnecessary, and kind of cumbersome given the situation.
I've tried 3 different compact combos, and they all have some sort of problem. Reception, non-standard keys, missing function keys... etc. In the end I just went with a full size one from Logitech for over a year now, and have absolutely no problem. Good signal strength, familiar full size keyboard, multitouch touchpad, awesome battery life, it just can get better at this price range.

>So I can use this to stream videos from my PC to the TV?
Yes!
You just either need a controller or keyboard+mouse for the Link OR start the videos from the other room, from your PC
Actually I use a bluetooth keyboard with touchpad for the Link
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Not Bluetooth, but I like this one; it uses their unifying receiver.
Somewhere in my post history I wrote a bit more about it in a comment to another thread; plus, others offered their input.
Can't speak to this device, but I have larger hands and enjoy using something closer to a full keyboard. I have the Logitech K400 and I really like it. I paid $20 for it, so it's comprably priced and I'd say worth checking out. Logitech K400
Wireless keyboard and mouse?
Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 with Built-In Multi-Touch Touchpad, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_CiC9ub1RDJTMW
This one has a built in track pad...should be adequate enough for navigating Netflix.
Logitech K400, very handy compact keyboard with touchpad.
I think there is a newer version of this though - I recommended this to a friend and when I saw it I noticed the F# keys are switched:
Instead of mine, which has F1-F12 normal and you have to hold [Fn]+[F#] to access the media features, the newer versions have the F1-F12 keys as the[Fn] alternative and the top row is by default the media keys.
This is very handy since the kids keep hitting wrong buttons, and I can't remember what it is but I think it's F8 and XBMC gets muted, and there is another button that toggles fullscreen and that keeps getting hit after I get it back to fullscreen.
On the newer version you don't have to worry about that because you would have to hit [Fn]+[F8] to actually get F8. So it's a perfect HTPC keyboard now if you buy one.
Eh, it saves a few bucks so I figure why not. It's $37 on Amazon right now.
Set up a low cost PC (you don't need very much power to play video) with HDMI out and a wireless keyboard (the logitech k400r is fantastic, the batteries literally last for a year). The Plex Home Theater client blows everything else out of the water if it's TV in your living room that you're after. It's way better than a console.
Also worth noting - you can use the plex client on your phone/tablet to select a video to start playback on the PHT client connected to your TV, or any other plex client attached to that server.
That's me...the 20$ logitech one.
Works just great for couch surfing.
Amazon has those for $25. They've been down at $20 till recently.
Here's the link
I've got this and it works amazingly.
It looks like the Logitech K400.
There's Mouse Toggle. It adds mouse-like functionality to the stock remote. It works ok if you have no other mouse.
After the stock remote, my favorite is Remote Mouse for Fire TV, followed by the Logitech K400 (when it's $20).
You should definitely give it a shot, and if it doesn't work for you, you can always go back to cable. I was sick of paying around $150/mo for a cable/phone/internet bundle, so I cut the cord when I moved into a new apartment around a year ago, zero regrets. I now pay $50/mo for 15Mpbs internet, and it's been great.
I got this computer: Dell Zino HD (looks like it's discontinued)
a wireless keyboard: Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400
and this HD antenna: RCA ANT1450BM
That's it! I'm going HDMI from the computer to TV to stream anything from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, anime sites, whatever you want. You're not limited to services provided through Boxee or Roku type devices. The HD antenna gets used once in a while for live stuff or PBS, and I was shocked by how good it looked. Positioning can be a bit tricky, but I swear the image looks better than my previous cable connection.
For current shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men, Amazon sells season passes for a slightly discounted unit rate, and the shows are available the day after airing.
It was a little scary at first, but now I can't imagine going back to that time and money pit. I feel more in control of what I watch, and I seriously feel mentally cleaner. Give it a try if you're considering it, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
a logitech k400 i picked up at microcenter - Link
My experience with the Steam Link:
It works decently after upgrading from my old WRT54g router (which was unplayable) to a TP-LINK Archer C9.
Although when I say "decently", I'm not one who freaks out if FPS drops to 59 at 1920x1080, or even has to play at that resolution. It's playable. Sometimes it slows down. You can stream Netflix from your browser, sometimes the video goes into slow motion during scenes that have more "action", i.e. a woman jogging... (I haven't even watched something like Transformers...) depending on your Stream setting of Fast, Balanced, Beautiful.
It's nice when it works, most of the time. Sometimes it still drops the connection though, or the window loses focus, or you have to log in to Windows, and you have to physically go to the computer and figure it out, which can be frustrating.
Most of the time I've had to go over physically was because Steam crashed and I had to restart Steam. Hopefully these are bugs they'll be working out as it's still a relatively new device? Between this and the controller, they seem to get regular updates. And things HAVE been getting fixed and enhanced. But apparently it can't start Steam up on it's own over the network, or let you log in to Windows.
It worked plug & play with my Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 (plugging the little Logitech wireless receiver)
It's a Logitech K400. Perfect for the couch!
Decent enough. Ignore it being a tablet basically. I hook this up http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1425930483&sr=8-4&keywords=logitech+wireless and just use micro HDMI out and I'm set!
I stream Netflix, Twitch, and use Kodi for network mkvs. Does everything I need it to!
Or Just get a HDMI cable, as most hotels have HD tvs
And pair your laptop with this keyboard
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376542567&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+keyboard+k400
I'm guessing you're not talking about the stick. This gets a lot of love on the HTPC/XBMC subreddits, and rightfully so. I have it and it works amazingly well. It's USB, so while it would work on the FireTV, it would not work on the stick.
These are very quick searches, I'm at work. But if you've got time, do a little research and see what you come up with.
EDIT: I don't what connector your tablet uses, but I can gurantee you, all of this will cost ~$20-25.
This one is kind of an intermediate step between a normal keyboard and the micro ones:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DKZTMG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
FWIW I have the micro FAVI one and it's pretty cool if you are using the pi for a HTPC or something and don't need to type much.
This is what you're after. By far the best HTPC input.
Not intuitive, though. Using a PC is made more for a desk with a keyboard and mouse, rather than a couch and a controller.
With a controller, you can't generally navigate the OS, or most programs for that matter. Even Steam's Big Picture Mode isn't perfect, because sometimes you get menus that pop up that you can't close unless you mouse-click the close window button.
Not only that, but it's not all that comfortable to have a keyboard and mouse with you on the couch. Unless you have a setup where you have a small table next to you on the couch that accommodates a K+M.
I have tried this, though, with some small amount of success. I placed a media center PC in the living room, and connected an Xbox wireless module to it. For navigating the OS, and other functions, I used this Logitech wireless keyboard. While it was fun for a little while, but I moved back to my desk setup, because it was more comfortable. Not only that, but it was kinda hard to read anything on a 1080p screen over 10 feet away, rather than a monitor that's less than 2 feet away from me.
Not impossible, but not perfect either, and most console peasants won't even go as far as I did to make it work. So for them, it might as well be as impossible as moving a mountain by yourself.
I recently bought this for my htpc. It actually came with some puzzling device that almost looked like one of the old ps/2 to usb adapters. Only one end was male and one end was female usb. Read into the directions...it appears to be some sorta range extender. If you can get ahold of one of these it might help.
for the chromebox attached to the tv, replaced the included bundle with this combo keyboard/touchpad and have been happy with it.
The other chromebox is on a desktop and am using a logitech keyboard and logitech mouse. At this point, the asus keyboard and mouse have been put in storage... the only upside to using the asus stuff would be if you're used to the chromebook keyboard, because it's laid out similarly.
Currently running ICS on my A500, really loving it. It'd be nice if there were a keyboard dock like the W500. The dock connector is a complete and utter waste without something like that. No idea what Acer was thinking. I got a case which can stand up the tablet and a wireless keyboard/touchpad, and it works, but it doesn't even come close to the convenience of a Transformer-like dock/charger.
Other than that, I'm enjoying my Iconia. I got it from a Woot sale at the end of January (IIRC) for $300. I do wish I had just waited and gotten a premium tablet, but you get what you pay for, and I'm very satisfied with what I've got, especially considering how little I paid.
I came from an iPad 2 to an A500. I love having an easily accessible dev community, and I love being able to actually do stuff with my tablet. Even jailbroken, the iPad was unbearably locked down. I couldn't stand it. The main downside would be the loss of the App Store's abundance of tablet apps, but that's a problem all Android tablets have and I'm sure a problem which will be remedied as tablets and Android tablets in particular become more popular.
The OS itself is just gorgeous. iOS looks fine on phones, but it just doesn't fit on a tablet... you're missing out on so much functionality without widgets and the like. Even Honeycomb looks a ton better than iOS, and ICS simply blows it out of the water. Here's my desktop right now. Everything's so smooth and well designed, as it should be. iOS, on the other hand... it feels "chunky" or childish on a tablet. It doesn't work well in my opinion.
So that's my whole opinion. The tablet itself is great for the price. There aren't any glaring flaws (well, the GPS thing can be problematic, but that's patchable.) Android itself is a great OS, albeit one with a lacking selection of tablet apps. That selection is growing, though. I love my Iconia and, right now, there's really no reason to upgrade to anything different.

Get that one. You don't have to worry about losing the little mouse and it's a reliable brand. Most of the others are crap. You can also use your phone via bluetooth to control it which is what I'd suggest. You can also use any wireless keyboard and mouse like you use on a desktop. I use a normal size logitech keyboard and mouse on mine sometimes since the RC12 mouse I bought hasn't held up.
I got a wireless keyboard with built in touch pad for the mouse. It works great and is slightly smaller than your normal keyboard but still easy to type with. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DKZTMG/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've used a few wireless keyboard/mice devices with my HTPC, including a Lenovo N5902, the one in OP's image, phone mouse/keyboard apps for iOS and Android, and finally settled on the Logitech K400r.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005DKZTMG?pc_redir=1407353314&robot_redir=1
Really recommend the K400. Having a nearly full sized keyboard makes typing so much easier, and if you hand it to a guest they don't have to fumble around with it like some piece of Alien technology. The track pad is great and the battery life is excellent.
This is my set up, full time. I game with a 360 controller or with Nostromo N52 (not razer), Logitech G500, and Logitech K400 keyboard/trackpad on an approx 2'x3' wood board on my recliner.
I am not a PS4 player but to play on my TV with a wireless controller I use Logitech K400 I would assume it would work on PS4.
I'm currently using this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426700610&sr=8-2&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard
No issues at all. Plug in and go! Mousepad and keys all work. I use it for FF14.
I may be a little simple, but I just use this bad boy. Netflix, Youtube, movies on SD card.
have you ever considered the Logitech k400? It's a wireless kb/mouse combo. not good for fps, mmorpg, etc, but probably not bad for Civ.
It sounds like you just want a wireless controller. They recently added xbox360 support, so a wireless receiver + wireless xbox360 controller would work, or a wired one for that matter.
If you want it to be done from your phone, you might want to look into something like HippoRemote or something similar -- it turns your phone into a wireless mouse/keyboard/gamepad, with macros and such for specific apps
Theres also just wireless keyboards and stuff that would work. I have a http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375578922&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+keyboard and like it a lot -- it has a built in multitouch trackpad so you have keyboard and mouse in something relatively small, but not so small that you're constantly fatfingering stuff like the super small keyboards.
Here is a good option I believe Amazon link
If you want to spend 20 dollar more, maybe one of theese wireless keyboards with touchpad are cool. i have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375980041&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+keyboard+trackpad
it has some small software issues (only in germany :P) with qewrtz layout. but pretty awesome!
Similar options from Logitech are the K400 and K400 Plus.
If that's weird, then this will really blow your mind. I actually have 3 monitors. My video card has a VGA, DVI (which I convert to another VGA with included adapter), and HDMI outputs. It can operate any two at a time. So, when there's no signal on the HDMI (that is, my home theater receiver is off) then my two small LCDs are set up in a dual monitor setup (a 17" wide and a 15" 4:3 set in portrait mode) that's ideal for coding, transcoding, and most general surfing use. When it's time to kick back and watch a movie, I power on the receiver, the video card automatically switches to VGA and HDMI, which routes sound to my receiver, and video to my 23" wide LCD that I use as my "TV" (actually more properly a monitor attached to my receiver's HDMI out). I still drive the same computer, but from the couch, with a wireless keyboard (the excellent K400 from Logitech.)
Wireless keyboard with mouse pad.
never get up for your laptop again. this is what i use
Apple's trackpad does, but it requires a $30 adapter.
This is the closest thing you'll probably want, but it's not backlit.
Here's an even smaller version that's hit or miss (and backlit!).
I use the following and I love it:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG
What about something like this? I sometimes find using a mouse in a couch or coffee table a little annoying for an HTPC.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418059247&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+keyboard+trackpad
Problem solved.
~~Is 20 dollars cheap enough? If so : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823334004
Edit: Read a few reviews, mixed opinions, for casual use people say it's great.~~ Edit2: Scratch that keyboard. Just go with this.: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=lp_12879431_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1415015172&sr=1-1
This is my current setup, I use one of these combo keyboard/trackpads which is able to wake it from sleep from my couch. Even though its a several year old sandy bridge era laptop, the hardware is still good enough for streaming video, although only in 1080p since thats the max output from the integrated graphics. It may not be the most couch friendly interface to use, but I never have to worry about a streaming service not working, everybody supports PC browsers. I don't have to worry about my hardware becoming unsupported as it has no problems running the latest versions of Windows or Linux.
That being said I probably wouldn't recommend it to OP. But I would recommend it to anyone whos a bit more tech literate especially if they have an old laptop with HDMI out laying around.
This thing has made my browsing from bed habits amazing.
This is the best investment I made for my HTPC.
Hey, so my answer will be similar to the others here. But it really depends what you're looking to do with it.

When you start adding things, especially if needing more USB ports you can get a powered USB hub which is very useful. It's a cool idea, but it's not really worth it for the price. Even the adafruit starter pack is cheaper than this, and includes lots of goodies for learning about electronics.
The best wireless keyboard with touchpad I've owned. I recommend it to anyone looking for wireless keyboards.
Save your money. Get a long-ass HDMI cable for $20 and a nice wireless keyboard/mouse combo like this, hook it up to your PC or laptop and play EVERYTHING.
This is the HTPC build that I put together about 6 months ago which comes in pretty close to the $300 mark at current prices; though I'm confident some of these were on sale when I bought. I have all my media on a separate unraid box which streams to this one.
= $265
These are items that I already had but it's only fair to account for them too
I have quite a few of these for media PC's. They are great, not looking to sell any of them but they are pretty cheap on Amazon.
Get the Logitech K400
It's cheap, and it's the best damn thing I've ever done for my Media Center PC
I can personally vouch that the following peripherals work, but certainly make no guarantees that they are the best options or prices etc. If you are feeling really ambitious you can browse the list of verified peripherals and shop around.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and that should update everything.
I bought this keyboard and it works great. It has a built-in trackpad so a separate mouse is not necessary.
As far as game controllers, I'm just using a wired Xbox controller.
Logitech K400
It mostly comes down to what you are most comfortable with. I run Windows 10 on a computer I built hooked up to my home theater with a Logitech K400 wireless keyboard/mouse combo as my controller (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DKZTMG). Plex runs on some NAS devices but I stayed away from that as I read some are under powered and can't keep up with transcoding multiple streams.
I don't use mouse on PS4 (this is simply because for simplicity I use a Logitech K400 Plus (btw, has to be plus, the normal K400 has a badly placed 'up' key, messing up questions when I try to type them because I always use right shift and the button next to it, which is normally ?, but on the K400 is the up arrow, erasing the sentence at the very end of typing it)
I do use a different gaming keyboard and gaming mouse on PC, though I use controller for both as well (I normally use controller and some keyboard keys). So this isn't so much a difference between the two systems as it is my setup for them. There is still a slight difference in how the controller controls the cursor on the screen though.
> What do you use to game from your couch? Gamepad, keyboard/mouse combo?
An i5-4440, GTX960 2GB, 8GB DDR3 and a 3TB HDD. Used to have SteamOS on it, but replaced the base OS partition with Ubuntu 16.04 after a while and it definitely worth it.
Every game released for Linux is playable more than decently.
> Gamepad, keyboard/mouse combo?
2 Steam Controllers, 2 DS4 controllers and a DS3 (working natively through bluetooth) always at hand. Also, this little guy if I ever need a physical KB&M.
> What about your general computing tasks from the couch? Web browsing, Netflix, etc?
It's just a regular PC, so browsing and streaming are both done through Chrome.
Same with emulators (PCSX2, Dolphin, PPSSPP, etc.) and Wine games that require a controller are usable through xinput activator button in the controller for easy access to a Controller layout (here's an example of how it works).
So basically, this machine has replaced all of my consoles (PS3/4, WiiU) almost completely, so Steam in BP is the most used application on it, but on the proper desktop the SC as trackball mouse and its on-screen keyboard is the prefered input method.
Also, it also can be used and operated remotely through ssh so it can be left turned on and act as a server of sorts if required (for internal streaming, torrents, file sharing, etc), and Steam streaming work flawlessly both as host (can easily stream games from my desktop) or client (a roommate used this machine to play DOTA2 on his shitty laptop without issues).
Oh, and since last week, Rocket League with friends is awesome from the couch! Without even mentioning the quantity of other good couch games (like Towerfall, Assault Android Cactus, Trine, etc) available for linux ussually works mixing and matching any controller.
Hope this helps in your set up.. Enjoy your new console-killer!
I have this. It works perfectly with the steam link. The one you picked out should work as well. Even if it has a dongle included. (Some are Bluetooth).

There are a few tablet/laptop-esque projects/kits with the Pi, and as you might suspect, they vary greatly in quality and cost.
Here are a few options, to show you what is out there:
I only briefly tried the HDMIPi with Raspbian, and am sure there are some settings to change, but I found some text a little difficult to read. I plan on fiddling with that again after I get a few other things out of the way.
For OS, the "standard" would be Raspbian. There are probably a couple others that might work for what you need, but Raspbian is the one the Raspberry Pi organization has focused on. As for productivity software, LibreOffice is available from the Pi Store.
Most cases are the same, so it would be up to taste, if using one of the laptop/tablet things above, the Pi enclosure is included/part of the build.
Cables will depend on your specific needs, again, most of the laptop/tablet things will include or list the needed cables.
Other things to consider would be:
I currently have a Logitech K400, but I don't much care for having a surface without a spot for a mouse. I've used a spare wooden board from some cheap shelves to suffice. What are your thoughts? Useful for your set-up? Or just another Razer flop?
I'm not 100% certain, but I believe it's this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/
It's pretty nice if you connect your PC to your TV, get one of these and a Xbox controller and you can lean back in your sofa and use your TV to play. Pretty nice for single player games like the Fallout series and emulators.
If you're looking for a keyboard, this one seems to be a good choice for an htpc.
one of these. it will save a usb slot and it's an all around great keyboard for what it is. I use it on a mediabox i set up when it's not being used with the pi.
I've been using this for my HTPC for quite a while now. It's no Macbook trackpad, but it's more than adequate and massively reliable.
This is a good start. Here's some reviews of it. Overral consensus is that it's a good keyboard for the price.
The reviews I linked are for the K400 while the product I linked on Amazon is the K400r. The K400r has multi-touch support for mobile phones and I think works well on HTPC OSs as well.
I'm not 100% sure about that one, but according to my dad this one has been working great with the Pi!
Not really, you can get a set like the logitech wave that pairs the mouse and keyboard to one receiver, or a keyboard with a trackpad build in
Cntrl + arrows mean that you have to swap each of the spaces in between the space you are navigating from to your destination. I can navigate directly to each space.
>you don’t have a trackpad that sits right in the place of the numpad for your Linux PC, while I have
I could buy one of those if I wanted to, it's actually much cheaper then the keyboard I use, but I have no use for it.
>And no, using the keyboard is not faster than using the mouse for this kind of work.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
I do, at least for a lot of games. I still stick to the desk when playing FPS games but I use the TV a lot, also. I use PS3 controllers with a cheap USB bluetooth dongle and the SCP Toolkit drivers, a long HDMI cable I switch between my monitor and my TV as needed (considering getting a DVI cable to just have them both hooked up but honestly switching the HDMI isn't a big deal for me), and if I need to use a mouse/keyboard from the couch I got a Logitech K400 from Micro Center for $20.
That setup works great for me, honestly. I did experiment with using another PC for Steam streaming but latency over wi-fi was always too big of an issue so IMO the long HDMI cable works better.
Why not a key board with a touch pad? a necessary component and would give you more space to work with. Plus this exists in stick form.
Some suggestions for keyboard/mice:
Lenovo N5902. Goes on sale regularly.
Logitech K400
Generic keyboard/touchpad remote. There are many slight variants on this.
I've found that due to the size/shape/content of my living room, a wireless receiver plugged into my HTPC doesn't work 100% reliably. I've connected a USB extension cable to the back of my HTPC and run it behind things and under my couch to give me the best reception. Generally you can go up to 15 feet; any longer than that and you need a powered extension.
If you have a Logitech Harmony remote, I highly recommend the OVU4003/00 (RC6) USB IR reciever. Once set up with Windows and the Harmony remote, it works with XBMC/Kodi out of the box. This receiver was branded as HP/Dell/Gateway/Philips and probably many more. A Flirc is another option but it is ugly (IMO) and more expensive.
Regarding hardware, if you aren't gaming you don't need a lot. When using older gear the most important thing is video hardware acceleration. For Intel machines, you need something with at least GMA 4500 (Q45 chipset) graphics or later, and for AMD you need something with at least a 760G chipset. This hardware dates back to 2008/2009. Dedicated graphics cards should be at least a Radeon HD 2600 or a GeForce 8500. These cards date back to 2006/2007. CPUs are a grey area, but any mainstream dual core CPU (Athlon X2, Core 2 Duo) from 2007+ should be able to handle most everything. My first HTPC had an AMD Athlon X2 5000+ and it's still working just fine with W7 and Kodi.
If you want to game (and don't want to use a device like the DOKO), you'll need to find a quiet case that supports full length video cards. There are a bunch available, and I'm not sure if this has changed in the last 2-3 years, but the vast majority of HTPC cases large enough to support full size gear and M-ATX motherboards are simply too long to fit in a standard A/V rack or TV stand. The only exceptions I am aware of are the Silverstone GD05 and GD04. I'd be willing to bet that Silverstone has some other cases that will work also.
Additionally, you'll want to find a PSU, case fans and CPU cooler that are quiet and efficient. The best resource for this is http://www.silentpcreview.com/.
Lastly, if your A/V receiver has only S/PDIF audio inputs (no HDMI) and you want to play games in 5.1 surround sound, you're going to need to find either a sound card or motherboard with an S/PDIF output that supports DTS-Connect and/or Dolby Digital Live. Motherboards stopped coming with this around 2008 (AFAIK) and the cheapest option to get it in an add-on card is the Sound Blaster Z.
I have a long USB cable running out to the other room along with the HDMI and I have a USB hub on the end that lets me connect one of these:

Yes, exactly that. Just about everything renders as expected and looks great on the big tv screen. Getting around in some apps can be kind of a pain with just the remote, though. I got a Logitech K400 to remedy that and can run pretty much anything I sideload.

Logitech K400

I've never used one, but I like the idea of this one.
There's only one part, so less to keep track of. And you don't have to have a surface to put the mouse on. Of course this is only acceptable for casual use like watching internet content, not gaming.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1414420557&sr=1-2&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard
this is what i used for my htpc. it's not as compact, but it's got a touchpad
I have the older model, the K400r. It's great for HTPC, the combination of the touch pad and the mouse button on the left side is just right for my hands but I couldn't imagine using it for gaming.
I tried a few of those mini keyboards but I found typing really cumbersome and the trackpads were all garbage. I ended up buying the Logitech k400 and I absolutely love it. It says it's not Mac compatible, but it totally is, you just have to change the modifier keys in the Keyboard system prefs.
In short a solidly built HTPC can fix almost all of your gripes. Also you should really look at kodi again.
>Ok, so you mention my lack of paragraph and sentence structure (although I am hesitant to admit that you are very right) and also not mentioning a universal remote (which I don't want to buy [I wanna say the cheapest harmony is around 80$], rather I want a all in one solution) what are areas you find me to be confused or ill informed?
There are plenty of perfectly capable remotes for much less the $80.

I use the Logitech K400. Super inexpensive and pretty reliable.
No problem! Hopefully someone else can answer the app question. To be honest, I use a PS3 for Netflix & Amazon Video and my HTPC is used for local streaming and Windows Media Center (for live cable TV).
If she is savvy enough, she can just open a browser window and go to Amazon Video through a desktop shortcut. It's not an app, but it's an easy workaround.
Also, I would recommend having a non-intimidating keyboard/mouse combination. The Logitech K400 is a two-in-one that's cheap ($25) and won't intimidate her.

Buy an Intel NUC, some RAM, some kind of hard drive, that $30 Logitech keyboard + trackpad, and install OpenELEC. It takes all of five seconds to install and setup and it's awesome.
It'll run you about $200 or so total but should play anything you through at it.

I use one of these keyboards for controlling my media PC from my bed. Works wonderfully and the built in touchpad is great.
Everything depends on how much you want to spend. I'll outline what I did:
Get yourself a keyboard with a built in mouse pad. We have a couple of these for the machines in our shop. <$20
You’ll thank me when your tools have inevitably spread to every free surface in your shop and there’s no more room to move a mouse around.
possibly, i have looked around a bit for a solution without luck.
I Have a [Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1463503904&sr=1-7&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard)
that wakes the PC up without issue though, so I feel that ive narrowed it to the Seneo...
I will say that otherwise the Seneo works perfectly well, and fits in the arm of the couch very nicely.
There are several threads at the Boxee forums that comment on this issue. Plenty of Boxee Box owners have found success using various wireless keyboards and mice. There are also a few wireless keyboard/touchpad combos that are popular as well:
I'm planning on getting one of those after Christmas. We're starting to see the value in having the Boxee as a convenient web browser when we're sitting on the sofa relaxing at night.
[Logitech k400] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371664503&sr=8-1&keywords=k400) is only $30 and has been more then enough for me. I mostly use a harmony one, but have the keyboard on a coffee table shelf for when needed. I used to want the dinovo mini and edge, but the price tag just isn't worth it.
You could get a keyboard with a trackpad on the side like this one from Logitech.
You probably have something already, but I have a similar setup to you with a laptop that outputs to the living room TV, and I use this Logitech keyboard and mouse combo. It's got an all in one design, a Power (sleep for me) button, and an on/off button to keep your laptop from waking up from sleep when you don't want it on.

I also have computer desk next to tv, for when I want to ame with a mouse/keyboard. As far as couch navigation, I use Logitech K400r. Pin things you use regularly to the task bar, then it's just [win]+[1], [win]+[2], etc, to open them. Also, just press the win key and type stuff into the search bar to find easily. This is on Win 7 mind you. I haven't used 8 so I don't know if it translates.
I've been using this for a few months, it's not good for anything more than web browsing/file access, but it's solid all around http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397369453&sr=8-1&keywords=k400
I actually hook my computer up to my TV and have a little mini keyboard for my couch.
Like so: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG
So, not obsolete, just repurposed. I also have Chromecast for the other HDMI slot, so even if I wanted to do something on my computer while someone else was watching TV, they'd just have to deal with watching netflix or something.
OP here, I'm not actually the owner of this build, I came across it on PCPartPicker, you can see more pictures/details here.
As for controlling it, I've been looking at this Logitech for my setup since I joined PCMR ~4 yrs ago.
If you do build something post pics, I'm always interested in custom built PC cases.
Here are examples of wireless remotes that will work with it (via dongle).
Hausbell for 15.99
Logitech K400 for 24.99
I've been quite happy with my Logitech K400. The keyboard has an integrated touchpad and nice ergonomics. It's also quite cheap!

It works on a PC. That's all I have XBMC on. I use a wireless keyboard with a large touchpad to navigate the channels. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG It's hook to my TV in the living room. Nice to watch what I want to watch at anytime of the day.
It's wireless with a built-in touchpad: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
I use it for the media PC hooked to my TV.
Try combining this board with these parts. Fanless, no noise at all. Throw in a wifi card (mini PCIe or USB), and you're basically at $300. You could go down to 4GB RAM, or get a larger HDD, whatever your preferences happen to be. A Logitech K400 is a solid input device if you need one.
That will handle any downloaded movie (any codec really) at 1080p or lower, and will stream just fine.
I just set up my girlfriends broken phone with a logitech combo-unit and an OTG-dongle for the logitech nub. This one works great: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Looks good.
It needs a slot loaded drive. Unfortunately your options are limited and kind of pricey.
Windows 8 has an advantage in application support and compatibility. However it's possible that Linux can also cover all your needs. Plex, XBMC and Steam are all available for Linux. I'm fairly sure you won't have any issues with Plex or XBMC but I can't say the same with Steam. I've read that it's possible to stream to the Linux Steam client but I haven't heard much more than that.
I use the Logitech k400. It's pretty much widely recommend on this sub because it's fairly cheap and works really well.
I don't have much experience with Chromecast so I can't offer much advice. It's a fairly popular product though so there should be plenty of reviews around.
A HTPC is capable of much more than just serving media. Whereas a Chromecast has a much more limited feature set. It really depends on how much you value the extra features a HTPC offers. PC gaming on your couch through a big screen is pretty sweet though.
Are you sure? Because I was just able to open up Big Picture and start up voice chat through Steam in about 5 seconds (go to "Friends" in the bottom right corner, then pick a friend who's signed in and choose "Start Voice Chat").
Want to know the last time I installed a driver? So would I, I can't remember. I think it was in November. Things like that are automatic these days.
Still, I'd say your stipulation of never using a keyboard or mouse is a little unreasonable. Controllers are pretty crappy for a lot of types of input. Your time and effort would be better spent finding a better keyboard and mouse that doesn't suck to use on a couch. When I'm on the couch using my computer with the TV, I use this for desktop stuff. It's cheap and works well. Roughly equivalent to using a laptop on your lap at that point.
Almost forgot, your tag is "Idiot, can't read". I'm not 100% sure where it came from, but you've confirmed the second part of it for me twice now.
Well, you already have a keyboard and mouse, but if you were open to it you could try the Logitech K400 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005DKZTMG/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/176-6339428-8767621) which is just a keyboard with a trackpad. /r/htpc recommends it frequently.
The Prodigy is giant, I chose it because I personally love it, and it's a great case for a beginner to build in. You can also get away with a non-modular PSU for it, which drops the price quite a bit.
Here's my Steambox, which, when coupled with a good Xbox 360 controller, this keyboard, and this headset, it's almost like PC gaming.
The original plan was to use HTPC software (XBMC back then) but we got busy when I was setting it up and we got really used to just using windows and a wireless keyboard/pad. So we just do that. Allows us to basically stream anything without issues.
We picked up a Logitech K400 and it's worked very well so far, although it doesn't work well without a clear line of sight between it and the receiver so you have to make sure you have that (no holding it behind a laptop or your legs). Maybe the more expensive versions work better.
Only real issue I have with it is that I can't seem to get the machine to wake from sleep using the keyboard like I want, I have to open the cabinet and press the power button each time. The USB ports lose power when in sleep mode and I can't figure out how to get it to work, even after trying everything I've found online and having all settings correct. I think it may be the motherboard I got, but no idea.
I use this
This is the one I use for things like that, and it works pretty well:

Yes! This is the one I use and recommend. Unfortunately the touchpad mouse portion of the keyboard is useless because the Xbox One doesn't have mouse support, but hopefully that will change.
Would This work? I still kind of want a Nexus - player setup, where you can use a regular remote to browse, and voice search. But I mean a
No problem at all! I have only managed to get my pi mildly warm, but I bet if you were doing something more CPU intensive (i.e. video) that the little chip could warm up pretty good. The pi has pins on it for sending signals and receiving inputs to and from electrical components. The ultimate kit comes with a cable and an adapter to plug into a breadboard that gives you easier access to those inputs and outputs. It's really nice to just play with stuff and not have to worry about soldering. The wires that come with the kit have special ends on them to pop right into the breadboard nicely. The resisters are needed to make use of the LEDs. If you hook up an LED directly the the 3.3V power, it will burn out. I'm speaking from experience as my kit is now 1 LED short. My first project was I can turn an LED light on and off through a webpage. I'd be happy to share my code for that.
To assemble the kit no soldering is required at all. Peel and stick the heat sink on the chip, snap the case together, and plug the wifi into a USB port. I have a cheap logitec wireless keyboard/trackpad combo unit with a usb adapter and that worked right off. I'm sure bluetooth would be the same.
If you're going to experiment with different projects, its nice to have multiple sd cards. Keep the 8gb card that comes with it for messing around, get a bigger card and put retropie on it for gaming.
Big fan of mine too. Link
Honestly if it's an htpc (guessing from the remote comment) just get a logitech k400. I have one for my htpc and it works great.
I use this one pretty much every day since my HTPC is my only source of "TV" content. It's really good for the price.
Wake on LAN and unified remote for android solves a few of these. I'm not aware of any ways to power on a PC with your controller. I also use this:

Not sure this is the kind of combo you're looking for. I recently bought this wireless touch keyboard for my Ubuntu-based home theater and it works out of the box, no set up required.
Why not spend $500 then on a dedicated HTPC with a Logitech all in one wireless Keyboard or something similar, long HDMI cords allow you to place the computer just about anywhere so long as you can hide the cable, get a XBOX wireless mouse and adapter for USB receiver, problem solved!

had more use on PS3. Now on PS4 i have less use for the mouse pad. I like it a lot. Only complaint is the keys. many typo's and missed strokes. Keys are close together and have a lot of travel.
I'm still waiting for this one to come out. There is one on amazon for $15 but I've seen mixed reviews. I bought this keyboard for using my PC on the TV and it works well, but I would prefer a controller keyboard so I don't have to juggle things.

A micro PC with a rf keyboard/mouse controller running PHT. Also I'd go for wired rather than wireless network. It's hard to get the throughput for really high bitrate 4k sustained via wifi.
Depending on the keyboard/mouse you get you could also use something like this for light/midrange PC gaming.

It's got a cute little USB dongle, but it's amazing. Should work OOB with anything that supports USB keyboards, and has a touchpad RIGHT THERE. There is a left click button on the top left corner which I originally thought would get no use. It's pretty much how I use it now.
Thank you!
For anyone who's planning on getting a keyboard too, I've heard a lot of good reviews from people who used this for their PS3.
Mine failed after 6 months. The touchpad went haywire, I purchased this instead and I love it.
I really want the solar powered one though.
lololol I read that wrong:
it's not the cheapest but this is my favorite portable kb/mouse combo
I've perused some of the responses here, and based on your feedback it almost seems like you want a computer built into a tv, for simple media consumption?
I have (almost) the same thing set up. I bought a nice LG flatscreen (no fancy smartTV or anything) and built a small Home Theatre PC.
Here's what you want to look for for a HTPC:
Once you have the HTPC, you can hook it into your TV, and then use the TV as you would a giant PC monitor.
If you load up XMBC (a home theatre program) you can easily organize and watch movies and videos from within a '100 foot interface', meaning; large text, easy to read from across your living room, simple navigation.
Hope this helps!
Tip: its cheaper on Amazon

You have a couple of options for that:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2JWYD1ZNDS676&coliid=I29OYOW3Z8EHWQ
Plug N Play, works great. Maybe not the best keyboard for typing on, but that's the price I paid for a more compact solution.
Excellent build. I have nearly identical requirements to you and my rig is very similar to yours.
The processor I used was the A8-3870k (it was cheaper for me than the 3850 in Canada) and I went with a micro ATX setup because the case of my choice was mATX.
You will have no problems with that processor. It's simply a monster. Plays and processes flawlessly. XBMC runs perfect. I've got my OS and programs on a 120GB SSD so everything is snappy!
I have the K400 and also a cheap [MCE remote] (http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Microsoft-Center-Control-Receiver/sim/B006TPPVKE/2) which is great for non-tech savvy people in my house.
Overall I think you'll be very pleased with that build. Have fun!
I didn't want to have to use a keyboard and a mouse, so I used this:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343407074&sr=8-2&keywords=wireless+keyboard
I plugged the receiver into an OTG cable and it worked flawlessly. The trackpad was hard to get used to while gaming but if I was to do serious gaming, I'd be at my computer.
I use this one, but it's a keyboard with a touchpad as opposed to a mouse.
It was recommended by somebody who has kids and apparently survived things like having juice spilt on it, being dropped, stepped on, etc. I've changed the batteries twice within a year of using it and never experienced any lag!
Don't need it all power supplies are switching now, just plugged mine in, you can add Kodi to your steam library and video streams very well, I have one of these as well http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG for using with Kodi, works really well. Might need a power cable with an Australian endpoint is all. Only thing I am missing is netflix, while it's technically possible in the browser the UI is so shit I still have the AppleTV
Klunky?!
Being able to type a search term into youtube or netflix is still the best way to go.
Have you ever used a smart tv where you had to use the arrow keys to type a search term in? And wait a second after each keypress because all tv interfaces are slow as shit?
It would be annoying to use a regular mouse though. Consider something made for TV, like the Logitech K400 Amazon link.
My personal opinion is just to get the Xbox controller. It's a Microsoft product and works right from the get-go. Just plug and play. It works flawlessly with every game so far.
The Steam Controller offers precision although I think it's easier to just use the mouse and keyboard.
This keyboard is nice if you want a compact wireless setup.
I have a Logitech K400.
I want a Mele F10 Deluxe. (It does have Pro and Standard editions which are closer to the one you picked out in price.)
As for the streaming program question, I use Kodi for any HTPC needs, both on a RasPi and on an MK808B.
In case that was not what you were asking, I also use VLC, mpd and pyradio (independently of each other) to stream audio content.
So I thought it over and it dawned one me that I could just get a wireless keyboard and mouse. I guess I could have spent less and got the remote but I figured if my keyboard or mouse ever craps out for some reason I can use the wireless ones. I also chose this because I am impatient and and if it doesn't work for some reason I can bring it back to the store and not have to deal with the hassle of shipping. I looked around at a few places and I came across this. It was on sale for $29.99. I liked that I could have a decent sized keyboard and it had the mouse option all in one. It works quite well. I do want to thank you though for giving me the idea!
I'm looking at using this one
I bought a Logitech Wireless keyboard/mouse combo. It's not bluetooth so you'll need to use an OTG cable, but it come with a mouse and the home, volume and back buttons can be accessed via the keyboard!
We just picked up these and they work super well. Just plug them in and ready to go -- comes with batteries too. Like the other guy said though any USB keyboard will do the trick.
I know you said "besides a computer" but I've been using this for 6 or so months and absolutely love it. It's the perfect size and handles Kodi great. I have a very heavy build on it and it just keeps chugging along. It's also small and quiet.
Paired with this keyboard it works very well.
> If you want to watch any mainstream app like Netflix, Hulu, sling, etc you will need to use a keyboard.
I'd rather use this than click through keyboard buttons with a D-pad. Also youtube searches take seconds where they were previously slow and painful with my kodi stick.
You’ll need to go to /r/sffpc to get a recommendation for a case and probably a cpu cooler that will fit inside it and keep your machine cool but it’s definitley possible. You’ll probably be playing with your controller and have a something like this for navigation
Really if you do some research and buy half of your parts used you could save some good money. Thats what I did. I got my ram, case, motherboard and power supply used from ebay/craigslist and hard drive refurbished from the manufacturer. Saved some serious money.
Then I got a 360 controller and wireless all-in-one keyboard like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG
So when I'm tired of being on the computer I just watch tv or play other games there, and use that keyboard to type quicker.
And if you're a fellow pirate its easy to download whatever movies you want straight into it :)
Another cool thing to do is have a local shared folder between your computer/laptop and the media pc to toss movies and other media in there as well as other files.
This is what I use on my htpc. Works great!
I've been playing PS3 since launch due to waiting for my iMac to be repaired. You'll need a copy each because the key is tied to your PSN account. The two-install rule of PSN does not apply in this case. The monthly fee has been discussed already as has the GCD.
I want to take a moment to talk about just how great the console port is, though. Because I've played bottom to top on multiple classes and I think they've done a fantastic job of it. The free PS4 client upgrade is an amazing offer, too, and might even bring me back to console after the fact. The only recommendation I have is something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/
The little USB receiver is unobtrusive, the range is good, and it gives you a keyboard for proper typing (as well as quicker access to inventory and the like) and also gives you a mouse pointer when you need it in a pinch.
So I just realized the other day I have my old prebuilt tower just laying about collecting dust and figured I should probably go ahead and just wipe it and hook it up to my living room TV.
Any suggestions as far as wireless keyboard with touchpads and wireless controllers go?
Right now I'm considering this keyboard and either a F710 or Dualshock 4.
I'm leaning towards the DS4 but I have a DS3 and the bluetooth doesn't work the best as there was very noticeable input lag in fighting games. Is this still an issue with DS4 controllers or perhaps I just have a really shitty bluetooth adapter?
Gmote is your friend.
Alternatively, this is a good solution. I remember getting it for $20, not $30, and it's awkward to do any real typing on, but it works great as a compact solution for things like having a mouse to control Netflix with, and being able to type in the Netflix search field.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG. I've been using it as a "tv remote" for my wall mounted monitor for years and it's hardly ever failed me. Maybe you would be interested as well?
chromecast requires you to "cast" your media. it's basically google's airplay. Not everything is supported by chromecast, and you will always need a device such as a smartphone or laptop. Based on what I read and my personal experience, your best bet is to go with an Amazon FireTv. You do not need to root(jailbreak) for access to XBMC, so you can stay up to date with their current firmware. Rooting does give you access to use the USB port for storage, and some other goodies. You can find a lot of easy guides at http://www.aftvnews.com/.
For what you will spend on 1 jailbroken ATV2, you can buy a FireTv, apple tv 3, a wireless keyboard/mouse, and flicr that allows you to use a ir remote to control your firetv.
Flicr: http://www.amazon.com/FLIRC-Dongle-Media-Centre-Raspberry/dp/B00BB0ETW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419206683&sr=8-1&keywords=flirc+usb-dongle

my computer's over kill for a htpc but alright as a lightweight gaming rig. super meat boy and bioshock both play fine, and i cant imagine civ5 playing that horribly.
movies/tv are stored on a nas, which ive mapped as a network drive. xbmc is great for watching movies but vlc or literally any other video player will work fine.
I have plex set up on my nas but it's for my friends, not me; the last time i was on plex was when I had to reboot my server to restart plex...
plex does not stream games, but steam does if you have a second computer running because im on a full windows 7 desktop.
as for your last point, I love my k400. im using it right now, surfing reddit from my couch. I havent launched steam in a while but it would be fantastic if they could play local video from big picture mode. its possible there might be some add-ons that do this but ive done no research on it so idk, so you could set it up so that when you turn your htpc on it automatically launched steam in big picture mode
I need suggestions for any mechanical keyboards with some sort of trackball or mouse built in, sort of like the Unicomp classic trackball but not as clunky.
I'm kind of thinking going with this: but it's not mechanical and I hate trackpads.
Edit: I realize there's the Tex Yoda with a trackpoint, but the trackpoint is annoying to work with, especially gaming (well so is a trackball I guess)
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418788478&sr=8-1&keywords=k400r
Its a great keyboard with a good all around touchpad. Its a decent size as well. Its around 2/3 the size of most standard keyboards. Its from logitech and uses the unifying connector via usb, so it dosent drain your battery with bluetooth. Since it uses the unifying connector, you can also connect your choice of logitech wireless mice using the same connector. I'm pretty happy using the http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Zone-Touch-Mouse-Windows/dp/B0093H4VBU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418788773&sr=8-1&keywords=t400 when im not traveling. However, when i am, the touchpad works well.
There's a Windows 8 start menu mod that lets you control it with a gamepad; http://www.xbstart.info/
I'd recommend a wireless 360 pad with the official wireless dongle (the third-party ones are not reliable, and Microsoft no longer sells the accessory as a standalone product); http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417630666&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+360+controller+for+windows
I'd also recommend this awesome media keyboard with a built-in touchpad, which is very useful for surfing the web and navigating the OS with ease (not much for gaming, but I do play XCOM with mine on occasion); http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DKZTMG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
there is nothing to emulate a chromecast. fortunately the chromecase is very cheap.
You could get a wireless keyboard with a touchpad built in. example: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Here is the desktop version of your link
this this is such a great media keyboard by the way.
Yes, it isn't perfect "yet" where you can control everything easily without a keyboard and mouse but simply get a wireless mouse/touchpad combo like this and you should be good.
Might have to google some guides on like getting your PC to turn on from controller turning on and boot into Steam Big picture and you should be good.
There is also solutions like steam link and Nvidia's version of it which work fine.
A keyboard is almost required imo if you want to have conversations with people past "gg"
I like this one because it's thin and light weight, and there are other applications on PS4 where the touch pad can be used handily
This is what I use And I love it! I think I got mine at MicroCenter for $25.
I should say, I don't use this for gaming. If i'm couch gaming, I use DS4 tools and a PS4 controller.
I'd look into http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/10/15/meego-t01-hdmi-tv-stick-supports-android-windows-8-1-and-ubuntulinux/
releases in a few weeks. For $70-110 depending on how much the reseller charges, it's not a bad computer. You could put xmbc on it or windows 7 to use it as a streaming device. I'll probably end up buying one to replace my htpc.
and
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG
edit: you can also look into unified remote if you want a smaller remote it works over wifi and pretty flawlessly usually.
My opinion is not to worry about the live TV antenna and crap and a TV tuner card and how to record it to hard drives and all that bullshit , most stuff hits the internet fast enough now a days I dont think its worth the hassle. BUT my setup and I recommend it is to pay for a usenet account and use SickBeard.com to organize and auto download your shows and then have that using xbmc or i prefer PLEX to organize your content and access it that way.
edit the http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ the other guy mentioned is GREAT ! the range is amazing its cheap and you do not have to configure a remote and then explain to everyone in your house how the remote works
You mention wanting to use Netflix - Although support for Linux is coming shortly, you're pretty much locked to Windows at this stage.
For media center software, I'd go for XBMC - It runs on everything, has a massive community, and plugins for pretty much everything you're after.
For Keyboards and remotes, you have 2 options - I'd get a cheap USB remote and a Logitech Harmony to pull it all together. I'm a big fan of the Harmony 650, which I personally use: http://hometheatrelife.com/logitech-harmony-650-review/
The other option is a media center keyboard like the Logitech K400r, another which I have: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/
With the TV tuner, read the reviews online and check which standard your country uses. i.e. UK uses DVB-T, US uses another standard I believe
They're extremely easy to find on eBay. The problem is again the pricing, most of what you would want would be in the $100 range.
You're just not going to beat the Chromecast on price because Chromecast is clearly sold at a loss (or a tiny margin), like Amazon Fire TV.
If you're willing to go through the hassle of a Home Theater PC (HTPC), which is what a laptop would be, do that. That is the ideal client for streaming MKVs (aka random stuff downloaded off torrents). Long term, you'll never have to worry about compatibility, your apps being out of date, etc.
You're going to need a keyboard and mouse for setup and (based on my experience) you're going to want a good wireless keyboard and mouse, something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/
And don't forget the remote. You really need a dedicated remote with physical buttons, you'll regret it if you don't get one.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S69336/
Logitech K400 might be what you're looking for.
I'm in the states as well, and Amazon is the place to go for me. They've got everything.
For cases, I really like C4 Labs' cases, especially the black-and-clear Zebra line.
For a power supply, you're probably going to want one that is 5V/2.1A -- any less and you might run into power issues, so it's better to be on the safe side. Some of my Pis (like my Pi Zeros) run well simply connected to a USB port on my computer, other Pis (like my Pi 2) do not. This is most likely due to those particular USB ports only putting out ~1 amp or so.
You'll also want an HDMI cable probably, and for this, I would recommend going away from Amazon and trying out monoprice.com -- they've got good, cheap cables galore, though you can probably also find a decently-priced HDMI cable on Amazon as well.
I use the Logitech K400 keyboard for my Pis and it works well, too. Good battery life. Some keys are laid out a little weird, so I find myself hitting "Backspace" when I want to type a backslash a lot of times -- it takes a bit of getting used to, but it's small enough to work on and doubles as a good media center remote as well.
For a camera, you're going to be limited to the "official" Raspberry Pi camera, but USB cameras work well with some programs too.
Fair point. In my case, my trackball is wireless, so I can carry it to the couch. I also have a Logitech K400. Used to be $25 shipped, but Amazon woke up and realized how popular and great they were, and now they want another $15. The K400 Plus is $26 shipped, but I don't know about it. Considering getting one just to have one in both rooms. The K400 is absolutely a wonderful keyboard to have. Won't measure up to a mechanical, obviously, but for something you can put on your lap on the couch, it goes above and beyond. Again, no experience with the Plus.
Most of the APKs work fine once you enable installation from unknown sources. There are some APKs that don't work correctly from FireTV, since they do a check for the Operating System. WatchESPN is an app that comes to mind that you have to get an APK for an Android phone. If you try to sideload the FireTV WatchESPN APK, you get errors.
Keep in mind that a lot of apps won't work properly with a remote, since they are made with touch gestures in mind. It's smart to get a mouse or keyboard to use on the TV so that you can use these sideloaded apps properly. This one works perfect.
I'm using a cheap Logitech wireless keyboard that has a track pad. You have to plug in a USB module into your TV that came with the keyboard but it works great and batteries last forever. I have a 2015 XBR55X850C Bravia.
Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 with Built-In Multi-Touch Touchpad, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_IHoEzb5PA9B9Z
I bought one of these about a year ago, works decently for the cheap price. You don't have to mess with the software at all.
I run it on a 52" Samsung, just makes it into a smart TV. I also got the wireless keyboard to go with it.
I have a nuc and like it a lot. It might be overkill for what you want it for though.
As far as the remote vs. keyboard things is concerned I don't think it supports a remote, at least out of the box. However, the logitech k400 is a small wireless keyboard/mouse that works well.
I'd go with something like this, it's a bit more out of the way plus it's able to lay flat so it would work better for shows like techsnap where it looks like your standing all the time. It's smaller than the one you linked but for the purposes of running the show it'll work if a touch screen really is waranted
http://www.amazon.com/Touch-Screen-15-Inch-TouchScreen-Monitor/dp/B007948V24/ref=sr_1_15?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1416209026&sr=1-15
if not I'd go with a standard moniter with a keyboard/mouse combo like this one which is fairly small and compact
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1416209311&sr=1-3&keywords=keyboard
You can control this setup with any standard IR remote. The hardware has a IR sensor and is pre-programed with xbox media center IR commands. So if you get a XBox Media Center ready remote or Harmony you're good too go.
So you can get a cheap $10 remote or $$ remote or even use a bluetooth keyboard...
As far as "Wife Proofing" what I did was this.. Buy this remote..
http://www.amazon.com/Fobis-Technologies-WE-10-Weemote-Control/dp/B0010S8G2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416646314&sr=8-1&keywords=weemote+digital
SHE LOVES IT... jokes about how I had to get her a special remote with her friends..
It's a learning remote so you have to have a harmony to program this kiddie remote.. but I made the green button TV Power, Read Vol Down, Orange Vol Up and rocker standard and the "M" the back button. No insults to all the wifes out there, I'm sure many can use those $$ remotes but mine loves this little 5 button remote with the plex setup. The only thing she don't like is she can't fwd cuz I have the buttons programed as next chapter. But she can turn on the TV and so can the little ones. While I use this remote..
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Ultimate-Customizable-915-000224/dp/B00IAKLM54/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416646457&sr=8-3&keywords=harmony+remote
However if you're not ready for that you can do what I originally which was this..
1st I bought this..
http://www.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Touchpad-Keyboard-Android/dp/B00JO80LUI/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1416646515&sr=8-11&keywords=wireless+bluetooth+keyboard
Worked great.. but was RF so once I closed the av cabinet door it stoped working.. so this frustrated me so then I bought this.. which worked over the built in blue tooth..
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416646515&sr=8-2&keywords=wireless+bluetooth+keyboard
Then when I had to program the wifes / kiddie remote cuz she complained about the keyboard because the kids would leave it turned on and it woudl be always be dead when she went to grab it so I used that as an excuse to buy the remote I really wanted which was the big harmony IR remote here..
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Ultimate-Customizable-915-000224/dp/B00IAKLM54/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416646457&sr=8-3&keywords=harmony+remote
I told her I needed it to program the kiddie remote.. but really you can use any xbox media remote do that... I just needed an excuse to get approval from the wife to spend $200 on a remote ;-)
Pretty much any keyboard or mouse will work, though I'm 90% sure only the basic functions will work, so dont go out buying like some super legit gaming keyboard and mouse with a ton of extra macro buttons and functions on them, as im pretty sure none of that will work. Best bet is to just get a basic wireless keyboard and mouse imo, that way you can use them from wherever youre sitting with your wireless controller. Personally I use mainly just the controller, and a keyboard for typing, but I don't really need a dedicated mouse for playing the game since again, I use the gamepad, so I personally use this guy- https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG Since the only thing I really use the mouse for in FF14 is rearranging/resizing my UI, a trackpad is good enough for basic stuff like that, and I like the convenience of having it all their in one package. So I just play with my controller and have the keyboard sit in my lap or just sitting next to me so I can just grab it when I need it to type or like I said want to rearrange my UI or whatever.
Lenovo handheld gets good reviews, and is only ~$40 because it's always on sale. The backlight in the newest version probably helps. The new version also uses an optical trackpad, like newer Blackberrys.
I use a Logitech K400 which is a little smaller than a normal keyboard but much bigger than a remote, but I like the trackpad a lot. Works on PC/Mac/Linux plug and play, even the multimedia buttons.
I'm a big supporter of this build.
If you're looking to spend a bit for a full control solution, I have and love this keyboard for my on-the-couch computer use.
Do you need it for gaming or anything? If not grab one with a trackpad: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Control-Touchpad/dp/B014EUQOGK
Edit: I have the old one which is even better because it has an extra left click button in the upper left so you can hold the whole thing like a controller, move the mouse with your left thumb and click with the other:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
or Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad
Wireless Headphones
and another pair of Wireless Headphones
and a Wireless Headset also another Wireless Headset
I recommend buying a simple wireless keyboard and mousepad for easy PC navigation from the couch. Something like this: ( https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG ).
For playing Paragon, you can get a USB dongle that allows you to use your PS4 controller on PC, so I'd recommend that if it's what you're uaed to.
I have a Cooler Master Scout II case for my 1070 Rig. It has a handle for easy transport. I just have a power and hdmi cable plugged in downstairs. I just take it down plug it in along with my 360 wireless controller dongle and wireless kb with trackpad (just for navigation) and boom.
EDIT: This is the trackpad I was talking about, it's great. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474382890&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+kb+mouse+trackpad
Make sure you use the Harmony software, if you can. It makes integration of multiple devices that much easier. Also, be sure to check you have the latest version the Flirc software.
You probably aren't going to be too satisfied with remote interaction on webpages; it's do-able, just not a great user experience.
Binding direction keys on the remote and single / double click actions will do almost everything on a PC. You can also just create shortcuts to shut down the system, though turning on the PC could not be done via Flirc since the Flirc would be plugged into a powered-down PC.
If you're looking for a more interactive HTPC environment, a wireless keyboard touchpad combo might better fit the bill:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Another alternative is something like Unified Remote:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Relmtech.Remote&hl=en
You install resident software on the PC, and then you can control / emulate any function on your phone or tablet.
This is what I have found the minimum necessary for an HTPC:
I've helped setup my parents slingbox once so I have a little knowledge on the subject.
They use it to watch TV while out of the country.
One downside about the slingbox is that you need to put it on a TV that no one will be using at the same time you want to watch it.
Basicly the slingbox will take over what the set top box is watching. So you setup the slingbox in a spare bed room it will control that set top box. So what that set top box is watching then the slingbox is watching. If someone uses a real remote to change the channel then your now watching what they're watching.
You use an app on your phone or the web browser on your computer to watch the slingbox. So if you just hook up the laptop to your TV and get your self a wireless mouse / keyboard combo. I use this one for the livingroom.
When you setup the slingbox it will ask you for the set top box and it will program a remote for you to change the channel.
Hope this helps...
well if you have the hdmi cord with an hdmi out pc, you wont need chromecast, but you will definitely need a bluetooth keypad/mousepad combo to suffice your couch potato lifestyle.
The Amazon Fire TV is great and very high quality for only $99. If you have amazon prime, you can use it to watch some "free" shows/movies, or simply download the Netflix or Hulu app.
It doesn't have a full qwerty keyboard, but is compatible with any keyboard, including bluetooth ones such as this or this one which is only $15.
The best part is that it is supported by Amazon, which has some of the best customer support around. I don't know what the prices are in the UK, but it seems like it'd fall within your budget.
Guess you will have to get something like the K400 then.. no choice: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG
Goodluck :)
-Comcast Performance package. We typically averge around 25 Mbps
-Clearchannel 2 OTA antenna (looking to possibly change that)
-HDHomerun 2
-Apple Airport Express router
-Windows 7 machine running WMC and Plex Client/Server in the family room. Also running MCEBuddy to convert the WMC recordings so that the Plex server can read them
-Sanoxy WMC remote
-Logitech wireless keyboard/touchpad
-Apple TV 3 in the family room for Netflix, iTunes
-Apple TV 2 (jailbroken) with Plex client in my bedroom to watch shows recorded on the Win7 machine in the family room
-Roku in my stepdaughter's room with Plex to watch shows recorded on the Win7 machine in the family room
All in all it works pretty well. My only gripes are that it seems MCEBuddy is unreliable sometimes. Seems like it crashes occasionally and ends up not converting recorded shows. And the HDHomerun2 tuner doesn't appear to be up to snuff. With my current antenna I can get pretty good reception on the upstairs TV in my bedroom with the coax plugged right in to the TV. Downstairs, with the HDHomerun2 tuner the VHF reception is very spotty sometimes. Same antenna, just different tuners. Not sure what to think about.
I've had this for awhile for use with my htpc, its great! http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394001638&sr=8-2&keywords=Logitech+wireless+keyboard
No-Deal...
Pi: $35
Enclosure: $20?

SD Card: 4GB? $5...if you don't have one sitting around (I had like 30...but run raspbian on a 32GB)
Cables: $10 if you go to best buy and pay out the ass...$4 on meritline
USB Hub: $5
Keyboard: $30: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG?tag=thelinactsho-20
$155 tops. And I was generous with my estimates.
I bought the previous version of that keyboard for the new VR PC I built and it's been working just fine. Don't have my Vive yet, so I can't say with 100% certainty, but I can't fathom why it would cause an issue. You should be good.
Amazon Link
I use this little keyboard with trackpad to navigate when I have my HOTAS plugged in. It helps.

I use Big Picture a lot and it's great. pretty much the same as a console. There are a few games that have a launcher and it's a little annoying to stand up to click launch if you already were on the couch so I got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1371042446&sr=8-3&keywords=logitech+keyboard
Get a wireless mouse. The receiver is tiny and there is no cable. If you want to spend a few more bucks than that link, I recommend a Logitech K400 wireless KB/mouse combo. It can be useful for admin or using a web browser etc.
I use a keyboard and touchpad combo. Works great!

I forgot to add that to my Google Docs list didn't I! It's just a little Logitech K400.
This is what I use for that and it's great. Range is good as long as there's nothing in between you and the receiver.

Has no audio, but you can just buy a bluetooth receiver that'll do that
I installed the Netflix Windows 8 application and XBMC.
I then installed OblyTile and created a custom large button at the Start menu/tile interface for XBMC (needed to customize the tile with the XBMC logo, but wasn't tough). I also added the Netflix tile right next to it, large as well.
I installed Chrome (browser of choice) and created two smaller tiles that were links to bookmarks in Chrome, YouTube and Google Music.
Change the background of the Start/tile interface to something dark with a little bit of a pattern. Looks very clean and crisp.
I use a Logitech K400 right now. I have a Logitech 650 and Flirc I want to finish setting up, but I haven't had the chance to tinker with that aspect yet.
Overall, Windows 8.1 and XBMC + Netflix works really well. The Netflix app is stellar and XBMC keeping XBMC full screen (hitting "\") and just hitting the Windows button to get out of it/go to Netflix is very smooth and user friendly. I prefer it over the Apple TV and my Ouya by far.
And I built it with the very affordable Intel NUC DN2820FYK, which accepts 2.5" HDs.
The solution for me? Bought it for PC, HDMI to my TV, wireless 360 controller and one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG
Best xbox game I've ever played now! lol. Selling this POS console. It's truly the "Windows Vista" of gaming.
The Xbox Controller comes with one of the dongles in the box anyway. It's really up to you if the DS4 is worth $16.68 more. Personally I think I'm just going to get the Xbox 360 controller, and I was thinking about picking on of these up for movie watching and web-browsing in bed anyway, so the trackpad support on the DS4 would probably be useless for me.
Thanks for mentioning Mobius - looks really interesting.
I'm looking into making a wireless foot controller using one of these for the wireless connection and so I can get X and Y mouse movements for mapping to variable parameters. If the keyboard switches aren't sturdy enough, I have a bunch of Alps blue switches to use.

I use this. It works great with my Mac Mini.
Those PSU+Case combos are less than ideal but should be ok for such a low wattage build.
If this is only an HTPC you should probably drop to 4gb ram.
If you won't miss the number pad and larger trackpad you can check out the Logitech K400 to save a few.
Because that HDD is your boot drive, you want a 7200 RPM drive like this one.
There is a trackpad on it.
I just bought these two items for what you are describing:
Mouse http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BFOEY3Y/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item
Keyboard
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VAGXWK/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item
The main reason I bought them was that they can be wired or wireless and are rechargeable.
If you plan to never game with a mouse and keyboard I would suggest this keyboard to save on space:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1405175858&sr=1-2&keywords=logitech+keyboard
It is dangerous to go alone, take this with you.
http://www.amazon.com/RASPBERRY-MODEL-756-8308-Raspberry-Pi/dp/B009SQQF9C
This is a raspberry pi,
http://www.raspbmc.com/
I use it to stream 12GB + movies ive backed up from blu-ray discs, and it does it over a wireless connection just fine with no skips (to my surprise).
EDIT: Oh on a side note I bought this keyboard for mine and i find it works absolutely perfectly for anything from web browsing on the couch to finding and running media files on a network.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1404187296&sr=1-2&keywords=logitech+keyboard
I hope this gives you a viable solution!
EDIT2: Forgot you may actually want a little case for it!
got a few choices!

I would definitely recommend this one from Logitech: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405104354&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+k400
The [Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405711199&sr=8-1&keywords=Logitech+-+K400+Wireless+Keyboard) is not a mechanical keyboard but it is ideal for media center or home theater because it has a built in touch pad so you can control your computer from the couch and whatnot.
I'm not sure how many there are out there on the market but out of the ~90 I have, none. I have a few like Project Cars, Adventure Time, and House of the Dying Sun that I use controllers with but I don't need to actually be at my PC to use them since they're wireless (or you can use an extension).
The only games I've used with a keyboard and mouse were a modded Half Life 2 (which I wouldn't recommend) or when playing a normal PC game in a theatre, but you can also just use one of these depnding on the game, though to be honest I pretty much never play games like this.
So something like this, but with a screen?
For some people this might look like a good deal. Nice packaging, printed documentation, all in a nice kit. There is a market for it and I'm sure they'll sell plenty.
The bright colors and fancy box do jack for me. And lets be frank. Most children, which this product is aimed at, won't care either what color the keyboard is or how nicely it's packaged. They'll only care what they can do with it, and there's already a huge community around the Raspberry Pi to give children cool stuff to play with.
You can spec out all of this stuff for almost $50 less and have the newer model Pi. Sure, for some people, this looks like a great deal. For me, without a screen/monitor, it's no good.
$24.99
If I could go back, I wouldn't buy the type cover. TBH, it's bad. Coming from a MacBook Air, the TypeCover is atrocious. Especially given it's $130 price.
I'd buy this instead.
With NVIDIA GeForce Experience, a free piece of software that works for any GTX 500-700 series graphics card will configure almost all games for you with the push of a button. You can build a PC for around $560 that is 26.1 liters, or if you're really concerned about size $600, which will be 14 liters which is still about twice the size of the XBox One, but it's still very mobile. You can access Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, sports livestreams, a PC access pretty much all of the media either console can, unless I'm missing something. Using a PC isn't as difficult as people say it is. As long as you don't accidentally download crappy toolbars that bog down your web browser it's pretty easy, and you can, like I said before use GeForce Experience to do all the work for you. There are just as many, if not more casual games on PC compared to console. you can play something that's somewhat casual like Titanfall, or you can play side-scrollers like Fez, and Starbound. You do need a keyboard and a pointing device, however you can get a standard keyboard, you could get something along the lines of this which is not smaller than most keyboards, but it's wireless, and has a built in trackpad. If you have tiny thumbs you could use this. You can even use a wireless 360 controller as a pointing device, and use a chat pad as the keyboard. With the advent of steam joining another player's game is just as easy as on a console. If I see one of my friends is playing Borderlands 2 I can launch it up, click on his name, click join game, and I'm in. No pre-configuration required, just a steam account.
