We actualy found a beast of a spider in our luggage one morning. Unfortunately, battle had to ensue and it was a serious duel. Obviously one of us won. keep your tent closed up tightly and you should have no issues, but keep an eye out of course. I posted a good list of tips on another thread that outlines camping at this location.

I have a few solutions to this as i myself have gone to the extremes on sleep deprivation at lib. Here are a few game changers that made a world of difference.

Your tent. We found that righ as the sun comes up sleep is almost impossible due to light and rockstar heat. We got a bunch of those emergency thermal blankets and lined the exterior of our tent almost entiely in them. This both blocks light and a huge amount of sun heat. They make it seem like air conditioning compared to not using them. Packing tape works very well on holding them together and allows you to customize their shape to fit your specific tent. Another tip is to sandwich or layer them between a fabric material to dampen the noise they make with the wind as they move. Those mitary guilly style camo covers work well too. You basically want to hold them down as well as possible to limit how much they move to eliminate the noise they make, which is like tin foil. Be creative and innovative with these as they can look really cool too! Your tent will be dramatically more comfortable all day.

They come in multi packs to save money. Also if you have extra, im sure your neighbors will appreciate it greatly if you donate a few. The only drawback is the noise, so ensure you address this. Installing them on the inside of your tent is also an option.

Sound. Earpeace hd earplugs are amazing https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B076VTXWBP/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526521562&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=earpeace&psc=1
I go to tons of concerts! These are exceptional not only for being FRONT ROW! but amazing for sleep as well. They are inexpensive and worth every dollar, and super comfortable!

Brain spa.
Onnit new mood!

Take these before bed. Such a great balanced formula and one of the best regenerative items ive found yet!

Light in the morning or anytime of the day.

Ill keep this short, they just work, period.

Cool as LIB! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00XKLYWFU/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1526522342&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=cool+towels+for+neck&dpPl=1&dpID=41vWMI5EJzL&ref=plSrch
We discovered these and theyre awesome! We wet them down at the water stations which are everywhere throughout Lib. They feel amazing in the sun and in a wierd way are kinda fun, idk. Lol

Bring vitamins! I recommend D3, ZINC, B COMPLEX, AND FISH OILS.
Make sure you keep these all cool and dry.
I recommended a cooler scenario in another sub, but ill repeat it here.

Dry ice in your cooler is the best way to refrigerate all weekend that i have found, minus actually having a refrigerator.

Tip: careful with dry ice as it can burn you and mess up your cooler if not prepared properly. Wrap it in brown paper to prevent direct contact with the sides and bottom of your cooler. Also, if you put actual ice around the dry ice this works too. We got a solid 3 days of awesome cooler performance this way. Cover your cooler during the day with the above mentioned mylar blankets for even better performance.

Protein power! You need nutrition if you want to rage like a rockstar! Many flavors and its super fast and simple to prepare. I use mp combat protein, works well and tastes great!

Bed/air mattress. One oddity we found with our air mattress. At night the ground and ambient air temp drops a bunch on some occasions. So the air inside the mattress cools as well which made for an extra chilly experience one night. We insulated the bottom and sides of our air mattress with a fleece or similar blanket which helped keep our body heat inside the mattress.

Feed me! Bring good healthy food like apples, avocados, bananas, pita bread, peanut butter or almond butter. These are delicious and full of proper energy. Keep junk food to a minimum, but dont eliminate it, because well, sometimes cheese its are bomb as hell! You just dont want to be weighed down by garbage. Tip: the acai warrior bowls at the food courts are legit! And, try the poutine for breakfast! You wont regret! Also we found that Mountain house freeze dried packets are a convenient and awesome way to chow down. You'll need hot water for some and regular temp for the cereals and desserts.

I hope this helps. Unfortunately I can't be at LIB this year, so this post helps me cope with said situation.

I have many other pro tips if anyone is interested so hit me up

Love you LIB!

I also have misophonia, so I'm approaching this with such a perspective at the forefront of my mind in terms of the issue of noise. I don't know how much you've shared with your fiance about misophonia, or how supportive he is, but at least in the instance of these game nights, he sounds pretty unsupportive. It's completely understandable that he wants to spend time with his buddies and have fun, but it seems completely reasonable to have them be a little more quiet while they do so, even if drinking is involved. Also, like others have already said, the twelve-hour session seems excessive. I don't know how anyone would want to sit at a table for that long! Since he's interested in having a second session, perhaps a possible compromise would be two shorter sessions twice a week? Finding a reason to get out of the house for these sessions would be great, too...

If you are interested in some generic advice for dealing with noise levels, I recommend Mack's silicone earplugs - they're the best earplugs for blocking noise comfortably that I've discovered. It won't block out everything, but it'll work better than the foam ones from the dollar store. I also recommend noise-cancelling headphones - Bose seems to be the most popular brand among us misophonics, but I use ones by Sony that also work well. They won't block out everything, and the music will still need to be a little loud, but it makes a large notable difference in the amount of sound leaking through for myself.

Just a very short pseudo-review: I ordered four or five kinds, but I've tried only two because the rest seem to be variations of one of them and I'm already quite happy with one of them. The two I tried are Earasers and Ear Peace HD.

Earasers are very comfortable and seem durable, but they block less sound than I was expecting.

Ear Peace HD are comfortable, seem durable, and come with three different filters, for three levels of sound blocking. So far these are my favorites, and I'm satisfied enough with them that I see no reason to keep buying and trying. In terms of comfort, they're a step up from the orange bois. They also come with an extra ear plug and an extra of each filter -- which is a nice touch. The metal keychain carrying case is heavy duty and excellent, though maybe too bulky to carry around in my pocket.

For the foreseeable future, Ear Peace HD will be my go-to earplug. I doubt I'll use more than one set of filters, but having the other two, in case I need them, is reassuring.

Someday I'll probably invest in custom ACS molded. I did a bit of research on molded earplugs (JH, Westone, and ACS), and most who have tried more than one brand prefer ACS. Like the Ear Peace HD, the ACS uses sound filters that can be swapped. (I'm guessing the JH and Westone do too).

I earned my tinnitus by going to a lot of shows over the years, sitting in on practices, and having jam sessions.

How do I feel about it? Well... it's never going away, so I've accepted it. I wish I would have listened to my elders way back when I was your age, and wore some damn ear plugs to the shows. I definitely don't head to a show these days without a pair.

How do I deal with it? - Like a lot of others, I sleep with a fan on. At the office, I listen to music pretty much all day, but I use a fairly expensive rig on my desk, because shitty, tinny sounding "computer speakers" irritate the shit out of my tinnitus. (edit: you can get much better "monitors" than these for less money. I got mine refurb'd)

So the logical question is, "What kind of ear plugs do you recommend". My answer to that depends on how much money you want to spend. I'm a big fan of Vater and Hearo's hi-fi. I like the Vaters a little better, because they come with that little sealed tube, which you can put some rubbing alcohol in, and they're always clean. However, I do think the Hearo's hi-fi ones sound a little better. At the end of the day, they're both good choices, cuz they just turn down the volume without messing with the frequencies very much.

If you've got a bit of extra scratch to spend, then you can go to the audiologist, and get custom moulded ear plugs. They'll perform the best, but they're also the most expensive. My friend had this done, and I think he paid $120-150 for the set, and lost them within like 6 months, and went back to the Hearo's.

Last year a buddy and I took a 1300 mile trip around Colorado /r/dualsport ride on a Husqvarna 701 and a Yamaha WR250R. Here's a photo of the gear from last year.

This year we are adding one person (riding a monster, brand new, KTM 1090 Adventure R) to the crew and moving a little farther west to see some of the amazing sites in Utah. I put together a 1500 mile route, and will tack on White Rim Trail (if we can get passes) and wander around in Beef Basin for a bit.

A few of my friends have started using Polar Steps, so I've setup a trip and will try to keep it updated. I also maintain a simple website and will post photos on my flickr account.

Now, on to the fun, because sorting out gear and packing is half the fun of a /r/motocamping trip.

I'm involved in volunteer search and rescue (/r/searchandrescue) so a lot of this gear comes from my callout pack and extended incident command packs. The more experienced riders will notice that I'm lacking any tools, spares, tube slime, etc. I'm fortunate enough to be riding with 2 other riders that are packing all that jazz.

You sound like you may have been around the block, but for whatever it's worth, people close to me had the most success ameliorating their depression with:

  1. Prescribed pharmacology.
  2. Cognitive Behavioral therapy. If there was a single killer technique (and there wasn't, it's a set techniques, but the single most effective...) was writing down three positive things from the day, every night before bed. Doesn't matter how insignificant, from "I got married today" to "Didn't rain", so long as they are genuine positives. The mere act of thinking about them helps encode the idea that life isn't a big shit heap after all.
  3. Cardiovascular exercise. Endorphins, yo.
  4. A structured daily routine, and sticking to a healthy sleep pattern, including taking in the early morning/dawn, as well as unwinding from all the computer screens and active behaviour an hour before bed, if possible.
  5. Ear plugs! It's nuts, but this was the biggest bang-for-buck on the list. They're like $3 a month and result in much deeper, less interrupted sleep (in my friend at least). Depressed people can lie asleep for 16 hours without getting any rest. These are the best, in my opinion.

None of these were a cure, but they helped make life feel like a good thing a lot more.

Honorary mentions (aka "not sure if are placebos"):

  6. A SAD lamp.
  7. Certain fatty acids.

I know you don't want disposables, but these are my go to ear plug. I wear them pretty much every day and they're comfortable and not too expensive, and they're pretty great as far as NRR goes too. The reusable plugs I've had in the past tend to get really uncomfortable, and don't seem to block as much noise as these.

If you're looking for a muff recommendation, I really like my Peltor electronic ones for shooting, but I've never tried them in the shop. The NRR isn't as high as the Hearos disposables I like, but I prefer my muffs when shooting because they're electronic and still let you hear normal volume sounds before the protection circuitry kicks in and shuts the sound off.

I’ve been using these EarPeace earplugs for a few years and like them a lot . They attenuate but you still get good intelligibility. Another great bonus about these is that you really can’t see them in so I feel comfortable wearing them when going out casually without having to feel conscious of wearing them. I keep em on my keychain.

The Gorge winds at night (and day 1 last year) can be crazy chilly! I think last year it got down into the low 40's at night, but when its been 90+ degrees all day 40 can seem like FREEZING! Make sure to get a locker to store your jacket/onsie in! (Bringing extra clothes into the venue is probably my #2 for most important things!) To go along with bringing extra clothes you want to make sure to get a fire blanket to put on top of your tent. It keeps out the hot and cold! Make sure to pay for really cold nights and hot as fuck days!

1 is get a water backpack it will save your life!

I also recommend ear plugs! You can get them pretty cheap on amazon. I got these last year and they were great!

personally I think the party plugs are too strong and make the music too quiet, also the sound gets too bass intense(because higher frequencies are filtered out more) imo
I have found the alpine musicsafe pro with white filter to be way better because they filter reasonably good for protection while the music still being loud enough(party plugs are like 21 db and the musicsafe white about 14 db) and also the frequencies filtered are more even (comapre the filter graphs of these)
Bonus: if its still too loud you can switch out the filters

I have bought and tried several plugs (including the party plugs) and those are the best so far.

u/ReeferSutherland24 · 3 pointsr/bassnectar

Yeah, but you gotta spend a little to not ruin the sound quality.

These ones are supposed to be the best, according to this reddit thread. I am going to get some before the next show I go to.

Edit: they're $40 so they're not crazy expensive. I'd say it's worth the money to (a) not wreck your ears and (b) still hear that sweet, sweet nectar.

u/MilkThyPeg · 4 pointsr/CasualConversation

Just incase you need another voice to weigh in- BRING THE EAR PLUGS!!!!!

I go to metal shows (death meta mainly, but other sub-genres as well) every so often and only at the most recent 2-3 did I bring ear plugs and wow what a difference. When I leave the venue I no longer have ringing/throbbing in my ears for the rest of the night. I already have tinnitus at 21 and I wish I had gotten ear plugs sooner. Your ears are worth protecting, musicians even wear ear plugs while playing. You cannot reverse the damage to your ears and they are so easily damaged.

If you are curious, these are the ear plus I use. Many percussionists/drummers use them during live sets. I keep the red plug in by default because it blocks out more sound than the green does. The only time this kinda took away from the music was when I saw Hellyeah last summer but it was worth it because I want to be able to enjoy many concerts in the future.

I can recommend musician's earplugs I ordered on Amazon awhile back. They reduce the volume but still let you hear sound clearly.

These 'eardial invisible earplugs' are rated to reduce sound by 11db. The foam earplugs block a lot more sound than any musicians earplugs but musician earplugs still do a great job and are more functional. This model is on the smaller side and fit my ears better than any other earplug I've tried. Just a warning thought they aren't actually invisible just somewhat hard to see imo.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P2NTVPA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Another one I've tried are these 'eargasm high fidelity earplugs'. It's rated to reduce sound by 15db. Both of the earplugs I linked to come with a keychain holder that comes in useful when out and about. If I had to choose between the two I'd go with the first because it fits better but they really both deaden noise to a more tolerable level when my ears are sensitive.

I use the 3M disposable earplugs. It was something like $20 for a 200 pack and they come individually packaged. They've lasted since August for me, riding 5-6 days a week, throwing them away after every ride, still have lots of them left.

Also running a Sena 30K in my Shoei X-Fourteen helmet. The sound quality is great and can be heard easily but the earplugs totally eliminate wind noise, it's great. I would highly recommend this setup. Audiologist recommended to me, and now on to you.

Earplugs link to Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MCUOH2/

Things I can vouch for not working:

  • Mpow Foam earplugs, disposable - comfy and soft and would be great for sleeping, but not for repeated motorcycle use. They're OK, but they just don't fit as well as the 3M's and in the cold weather here right now, they never expand back out all the way.
  • Decibullz Custom Molded Earplugs - expensive as hell, and they block entirely too much sound. If you can't really hear your bike anymore, that's a problem. They also stick out of your ears too far and hit your Sena helmet speakers. No bueno. Also, the foam earpieces need infrequent replacement, running into the same issues as complained about with the Etymotic's I'll review next:
  • Etymotic Research ER20XS High Fidelity earplugs - apparently these don't have the decibel rating advertised, and aren't doing enough to protect your hearing. Also, the foam earpieces only last a week or so, and they're $15 for a 4-pack, so you're spending $15 a month on replacement eartips for earplugs that don't work as well as advertised. Shame, because I really liked these at the start, but now I'm really sold on my disposable 3M's.

I must've spent over $100 on trying all these various setups, and in the end, the cheapest solution is actually the best. It's crazy, but also great.

If you have the room, bring a futon mattress. It won't deflate or pop like an air mattress and you don't have to use a pump or your mouth to blow it up. It provides better support, it's not plastic so it's not cold at night or sweaty during the day. Plus it makes less noise if you're planning on some fun. ;)

Bring Swimmers Earplugs if you want to sleep at night and an eye mask if you want to try to sleep during the day. The swimmers earplugs don't stick out of your ear like some earplugs and they don't put pressure on your inner ear making it easier to fall asleep. The only problem is they are a little gooey.

On the topic of earplugs, please do yourself a favor and buy HiFi Earaser earplugs. As beautiful as this music is, it could seriously damage your hearing. Only downfall to Earasers, because they are so low profile and transparent, they are easy to lose.

The field that GA camps in is regularly used as a cow/horse pasture prior to the festival. Last year we had a few piles of shit in our campsite. Bring a tarp or blanket to put down and bring some extra grocery bags to remove the poop with.

As a lot of others I also use the Howard Leight muffs, and for plugs would highly recommend the Howard Leight Max plugs. I've used both the corded and uncorded and they are the best earplugs I've found in terms of sound reduction. Whenever I can I wear the plugs and then on top the muffs turned up to near full blast. You get even more protection and can hear everything pretty much normally. Especially great for action shooting, keeps the buzzer nice and loud.

I sleep with just the earplugs in.

if I'm up and reading and want total silence I put the earplugs in and then put the earmuffs over, these earmuffs are extremely comfortable, also you put headphones (earbuds) (for music and movies) on and put the earmuffs over. I can't say enough great things about these earmuffs.

Like someone else said on here your neighbors, landlord, and the cops just don't care. Moving is the only option.
Best advice is to move and never move back into apartments again.

u/azuriel · 3 pointsr/Frugal

Not exactly "frugal", but by far the best purchase I've ever made was this pack of 200 earplugs for $25. I've had to deal with living in dorms with a roommate and on a busy street, and being able to get to sleep and stay that way has been invaluable. Also great for traveling, hardcore concentration, and loud rock concerts. They're all individually wrapped, so I've given pairs away to friends too.

I spent the $25 about 2.5 years ago, and I'm just finishing up the box now. You can reuse them a few times even though they're "disposable".

u/oO0-__-0Oo · 2 pointsr/guns

Keep in mind that NRR means "Noise reduction rating" not decibel reduction.

With those Howard Leight muffs, best case scenario is about 8 dB reduction; more likely is about 5.

Currently the best consumer hearing protection outside of a full helmet (to prevent bone conduction) is:

http://www.amazon.com/Browning-12699-Hearing-Protector-HDR/dp/B005ERRM4G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417533045&sr=8-2&keywords=browning+ear+protection

if you slightly moisten the earplugs with clean water, the will fit much better, deeper, and have more NRR

u/Imjusthereformemes · 2 pointsr/Metal

I've been using earplugs for pretty much every concert since I was 15. I'm glad I did because I have been to at least 3-4 concerts a year since then and I would definitely have hearing loss by now.

I used to use the cheap drugstore earplugs but I've upgraded to these a few years ago after I started swimming again. I haven't noticed any sound quality issues at concerts with these but my friends said they muffled some of the higher frequencies when we were at Iron Maiden last month. I still recommend them over other earplugs as they are a lot more comfortable than the ones that go into your ear canal.

u/CosmicCurvature · 1 pointr/japanlife

The first ones I tried were called Hush Plugz (haven't seen outside of the UK), but Macks are also good and I'm using them now. US amazon has them, although I couldn't find them on JP Amazon.

here's a link

A pack of six pairs lasts me about two months with every day use. I still wake up to my alarm, but I keep my alarm next to where I sleep, if that makes a difference.

I hope this helps. I feel like I'd be sleeping on the couch every night if I didn't have these, so I hope it helps you out too!

u/chackoc · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

As /u/sumo_steve said, if you want BIFL you're best option is likely to be a custom silicone or acrylic plug, ideally built by an audiologist.

Personally I used a do-it-yourself kit from Amazon and the end product should be BIFL, but I assume you would get a better fit and better overall noise attenuation by going to an audiologist.

Note that while the plug itself should be BIFL, my understanding is that the ear canal's shape changes over time so realistically you might need to get new plugs a few years down the road.

Still if BIFL is your primary criteria, silicone or acrylic will last order's of magnitude longer than any foam plug you could buy.

u/fiah84 · 15 pointsr/motorcycles

get a box of earplugs and wear them

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001426BZQ

they're cheap so if you're going riding, just use fresh ones and bring an extra pair. You'll have more fun riding because you won't get tired as quickly and you'll protect your hearing (which can't be fixed once you break it)

edit: any music or navigation/communication is better handled by speakers in your helmet. In-ear headphones and such will just get jostled/loose and they don't block out the wind noise effectively

u/CSpotRunCPlusPlus · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Use foam earplugs.

Maybe not that exact brand, but something similar.

They're soft. Fold them in half and stick the bent end into your ear, makes them easy to take out.

I've used foam ear plugs for entire shifts working construction with heavy machinery. So they're pretty good.

If you think you'll look weird, try putting headphones on top of them.

u/tequilafriday · 2 pointsr/migraine

I also have times when I need to block out all noises - sometimes during migraines, sometimes I just need to concentrate. I often use foam earplugs in ADDITION TO noise protection ear muffs. I don't ever leave the house looking like this, but it works great for getting heads-down into some concentration-required work in my home office. This combination is VERY, VERY effective at cutting down unwanted noises. Just my two cents.

Here are a couple of cost effective product examples.

https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Laser-Earplugs-50/dp/B003628ODO/

u/ADHD-FrontalLobe404 · 2 pointsr/bipolar

You're not being unreasonable. You're trying your best to cope with the situation you've been dealt.

Try as best as you can to get space and have a quiet zone. Buy some good earbuds or headphones that reduce background noise. I also have these ear buds that I use if I'm in public, they're what people use in bands. Something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Vater-VSAS-Safe-Sound-Plugs/dp/B002RWKR7K. It makes over stimulating simulations much more tolerable.

Try to keep your visual stimulation low - don't watch super intense movies or go into crowds.

u/fwump38 · 1 pointr/LightningInABottle

Honestly, you've gotten a lot of answers. Several of the popular higher quality earplugs were mentioned and are mentioned by others and in the threads I linked.

As I said - many of them have different sizes to choose from. You can read the reviews on them on Amazon and search for "smaller ears" such as these.

You've also gotten more than one answer suggesting custom ones, which is truly the best way to get earplugs that work for you.

u/Lagerbottoms · 4 pointsr/progmetal

I only attend shows with protection nowadays. It sounds better, and is way more responsible :D

Even with rather cheap universal ones like the alpine I have.

It's probably not even important which ones you have. Just get some, it's worth it.

I used to have tinnitus for the rest of the evening and often the next day, and woke up with headaches. And now it's just like every other night. It's great, and I can't imagine life without them xD

u/duucfho · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

Howard Leight Laser Lites. Cheap, comfortable, and the best sound reduction.

I always use a pair along with music playing through my Sena SMH5 headseat. Works great.

They also come in corded versions if that's what you prefer.

u/heatherkan · 1 pointr/WeddingPhotography

I like Eargasm earplugs. They block out high noise levels (like blaring speakers) but you can hear a person talking to you with perfect clarity. They even come with a small mental keyring carry case that's easy to strap into my bag.

u/ReflectiveBelts · 1 pointr/guns

These are enough for me when I'm shooting outdoors, but I will double up when shooting indoors. Make sure you're wearing them correctly. It's gross, but I'll spit on them before rolling and inserting into my ears because it really helps them seat at the correct depth. I use those plugs for shooting and when riding motorcycles. They work fantasticly even when riding my annoyingly loud race bike.

You might want to replacing the Howard Leights with some cheapo safety muffs with a lot more padding, but obviously still have a good noise rating. I can't ever get them to seal well on my skull. Other people have said the same.

u/ArcFlash · 9 pointsr/HomeImprovement

This is the right advice: what you need is good ear plugs and a white noise machine. Not all ear plugs are created equal, I highly recommend these:

I have this noise machine, and it works great at drowning out traffic/ambient noise. I find it works well in conjunction with the earplugs:

https://smile.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_6_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523900773&sr=1-6&keywords=noise+machine

I use Howard Leight earplugs from amazon

They're cheap, comfortable, effective, and I'm pretty sure they're used by construction workers who need to be able to hear alarms. Anyway, I've never missed an alarm on my phone even though it's set to the lowest setting. Certain frequencies are able to go though the earplugs so I recommend getting these earplugs and testing different alarms to see what you hear best.

u/bilged · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

Op this is what I use and they are great. NRR of 33 dB and they are smaller than some of the other choices which makes them easier to get into the ear canal properly. 200 pairs for less than $20 is a pretty sweet deal too.

u/unique-eggbeater · 1 pointr/ftm

Won't help with Netflix, but I own these earplugs (yes, the 200 pack, lmao) and I swear by them. They won't completely muffle noise, but they do help a lot.

You can also put yourself in your own private sound bubble by popping in earbuds and then putting a pair of these over them. Not the comfiest thing in the world in the long run, but for an hour or two it works very very well in my experience.

Hi yunoo! As a first time metal concert goer I think it's important to let you know that metal concerts are LOUD! So loud that they can induce temporary and/or permanent hearing damage. I highly recommend some musician grade ear protection. I use these but they don't have to be these, just something like them:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MEE876O/

They don't muffle the sound, it's just like turning down the volume. Have fun at the show!

u/buckyboo22 · 3 pointsr/guns

You're getting good suggestions on firearms to look at (M&P Shield in 9mm!), but I wanted to ensure that you understood that you need to buy more than just a gun and that $500 isn't enough money to get started carrying safely. Here's a variation of my cost breakdown from a prior thread where someone had a $1000 budget to getting started:

  • S&W M&P Shield 9mm - $380
  • Remora holster - $15
  • Federal HST/Hornady Critical Defense carry ammunition - $25
  • Eye protection - $10
  • Ear protection - $65
  • Ear protection again - $9

I'm leaving out a range bag ($30) since I assume you already have a bag to carry the accessories to/from the range. I also didn't include a more expensive clip holster such as the Black Arch Proto ($80) and a belt.

That puts you at $504 before any taxes, shipping, and transfer fees. Other guns mentioned in this thread (the Glocks specifically) cost quite a bit more than $380, and thus your total cost will be well above $500.

At that point you actually have to learn how to shoot and how to carry safely. That means spending money on:

  • A handgun class ($100+)
  • Range fees (varies)
  • Practice ammo (~$12 a box)

Also don't forget to account for the cost of your carry permit. Depending on where you live and what required classes you have to take that could easily consume $250.
u/Rancid_Bear_Meat · 0 pointsr/misophonia

'Invisible' ear plugs. They can be worn in situations where earbuds are not appropriate and go unnoticed by most people. For anyone who MIGHT notice, just tell them you have a medical condition which requires them, that's it.

I've found great success with low profile versions such as these: https://www.amazon.com/EarDial-Ear-Plugs-Comfortable-High-Fidelity/dp/B00P2NTVPA ..or one of many others. There are very effective at 'muting' the world without actually blocking it out completely.

For many, the trade-off of being able to hear less vs being tortured by triggers is an acceptable one.

Outside of work or school, you can wear very inexpensive earbud headphones as they are so ubiquitous. No one gives them a second thought. You don't even have to have anything pumping through them most of the time. Just wearing them is enough of a muffle to make life quite manageable.

If you are looking for an inexpensive and effective way to block everything, try the 'Simply Noise' app and use the Brown Noise setting. It blocks both high (whistling, sniffling, chewing) and low-frequency (bass, thumping, etc) sounds around you.

Good luck to you!

I brought these earplugs for the Citifield concert back in October and will be bringing these with me when I go to Chicago next week. These ones are for smaller ears (because my ears are tiny) but they have a option for normal/bigger ears as well.

When I first put them on for the Citifield concert, I could barely hear the screaming but I could hear the music clearly. Best $35 well spent.

u/antarcticgecko · 3 pointsr/misophonia

I can't help you with noise cancelling, but I arrived at a similar solution through a roundabout way. I got bone conduction headphones so I can hear stuff on my bicycle, and paired them with some earplugs that specifically let some sound through. Then I'll listen to music or pink noise on repeat. Can't hear a damned thing and it's amazing.

I use a set of Trekz titanium bone conduction headphones paired with some earplugs that don't render you totally deaf when the music is off. The effect is similar, and if you actually need to talk to someone, you won't have to take off headphones because they don't cover you ears. I can easily hold a conversation with the ear plugs unless the person is very soft spoken.

I've worn earplugs to sleep every night for the last few years--a habit born from city living.

Of all I've tried, these are my favorite. They don't irritate, are comfortable, but muffle a lot of noise. I say muffle and not block because it's nearly impossible to block out all noise ranges with just foam earplugs (especially bass sounds), but these do really well for making it feel like you're in your own private room. You hear more of your own breathing than anything else outside of you. They're great for heavy concentration. I wear them for all my exams, as well.

Rave High Fidelity Ear Plugs

I used these at Beyond. You get 2 sets of earplugs for $17. It was perfect since I need a pair for both my gf and I.

UPDATE: added faceplates: http://imgur.com/ddkg1Ub w/ my initals and channel marking

I made these with the radians kit:

https://www.amazon.com/Radians-CEP001-Custom-Molded-Earplugs/dp/B003A28P4I

Simply follow the instructions (I used half as much material as they said I should, as 1) I have small ears, 2) much of the extra material is being taken up by the IEM)

Then put a cotton wad in the sound tube of the IEMs (to prevent material from going in)

Put IEM's in (without eartip) after inserting putty into ears.

Wait 10 min to cure. Remove from ears and drill out sound tube.

Cut the tube to length. The longer it is the more bass you have, and it attenuates the highs. Shorter is more neutral. I cut them short.

Overall the comfort went up 200%

My right ear must be funny because the seal wasn't as good with both IEM's on that side. I fixed it by using some silicone sealant and a paintbrush to adjust the fit.

Works great and I recommend trying it if you have $10.

I feel like whenever I go into the library my brain forces me to study as opposed to being home and getting distracted by a million things. If not then you can also get these ear plugs, I use them whenever I have to study at home. They work really well and are comfortable. So I was going through exactly what you went through, I could read five pages and then think "what did I just read?" It felt more like I was browsing than reading.

What I do is look up videos on Youtube about whatever it is I'm learning and go from there. It usually gets me more motivated to learn as opposed to just reading on my own. You could also break down each page but it's very time consuming but it really does work. Just read each page and write a little summary in your own words about what the page was about. You could even do a summary every new section (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc). Also you should be doing the Pomodoro Technique. I feel like that's crucial for people with ADHD.

Anyone who pokes fun at you for wearing hearing protection is either misinformed or an asshole, and likely both. Seriously, wearing hearing protection makes the concert better, since your eardrums aren't tensed up constantly from the volume. Literally 15 minutes at a "painful" level of sound (~120 dB SPL) causes permanent hearing damage, so wearing earplugs is just about the best thing you can do for yourself at a concert. If you've got the money, grabbing a pair of high-fidelity earplugs from Etymotic Research for ~$15-20 is what I'd recommend, but the foamies they have at the concessions stand at most concert venues (a lot of venues in the US actually give them out for free if you ask) are just fine, so long as you put them in correctly. They should have directions on the packaging, but here's how just in case.

u/skittles_rainbows · 1 pointr/Teachers

Get mom's permission first. I am reluctant to give foam ones to kids but damnit these are the best. Just make sure you show him the right way to put them in so they fit good. He'll still hear things but it will be more manageable.

I know too many "no need for plug" shooters in their 40s to 70s who now can't hear shit over the deafening tinnitus they experience 24/7, 365 days a year...even in their sleep.

For general use I have surefire EPs in various ratings and they're OK, but mostly convenient. For my ears, I found that Hearo Xtremes, are the best at reducing perceived DB levels (way more than the surefire EP7s). They're cheap too.

I used the Howard Leight electronic muffs, but I usually shoot with glasses so there was a lot of sound leakage and pinching of my temples.

These: https://www.amazon.com/Nonoise-Motor-Generation-Ceramic-Filter/dp/B00EDHWELY

I’ve used really quiet foam ones, which work, but theyre so quiet you do miss stuff going on around you and it takes some of the fun out of riding.

These are very effective, definitely below the damage threshold, but they let though enough noise to hear cars etc and your own bike.

I have a pair just like those from a different vendor and they're great but for a less visible alternative try Earasers out. I think they may be a bit less protection but they're good for going to a loud restaurant/movie/social situation where you want your hearing protection less visible:

I have a pair of EarDial earplugs (see here). They work pretty well. They're comfortable. They're subtle enough that most people won't notice you're wearing them. Plus, the carrying case is tiny and unobtrusive on a keychain, so I can just carry them with me wherever I go without having to remember to bring them.

I'm a big fan of the Howard Leight muffs. Turn the volume up enough and you can hear better than you normally can. (I heard my phone vibrate in my pocket like it was right next to my ear) I used to hate wearing muffs because it made it difficult to hear people but with these I hear everything.

If you want extra protection, I'd recommend doubling up, muffs plus some little foam earplugs like these or these. In fact I always have a few of those foam types around just in case.

Get earplugs from abroad, the Hearos foam series block out 80% of the noise and are comfortable. They're rated 33db. You can buy them from edfa3ly (or similar)

This one: https://www.amazon.com/HEAROS-Earplugs-Recommended-Professionals-%C2%A0Physicians-/dp/B01JXYH042/

Or this one (slightly weaker protection 32db but more comfortable):
https://www.amazon.com/HEAROS-Ultimate-Softness-Foam-Earplugs/dp/B01JY1TFZQ/

There is a locally available Bosch foam ear plugs for workers operating heavy machinery that also works, I've seen it in ACE but they were like 35 EGP for 5 pairs, it was rated 36db, or so, crazy expensive and that was even before the flotation. I tried them once but they were the least comfortable (but still OK) among all.

All of the above are disposable foam, but if you clean your ears regularly, you can reuse them almost for several days.

Some high-end pharmacies sell the washable plastic spring-like ones (seen them in abd el maksoud pharmacy) but they don't work nearly as well and are much much less comfortable.

However, avoid the silicone ones, because they can tear and get stuck inside your ear (I recommend only disposable foam or reusable plastic ones).

For even more isolation, you can wear your headphones while wearing the plugs to hear soft brown noise drowning out the remaining sounds the ear plugs don't block.

Also, don't worry they don't block out noise completely, you can still hear cars and people talking.

I wanted to give a heads up for those looking to save money with DIY foams. I went through 3 orders of Comply tips over a 3-4 month span. They would literally tear up due to the excess earwax after 2-3 weeks of use(even with the earwax proof version). I got fed up and ordered these

In the mean time, I tried products like Nasivent with some success.

I'm also a light sleeper. If the ear plugs aren't working for you, then I think either you aren't using them correctly, or they aren't the right earplugs for you. That was the case for me. I have small ear canals, so I use these slim fit ear plugs, but they will be less effective for someone with larger ear canals. And I learned that I had been putting them in wrong my entire life. u/dmukya · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Proper fit would be the most important thing to focus on. Get a Snell/ECE Full face (or modular) to minimize noise and maximize protection.

I would be worried about long term hearing damage from the extended exposure to wind noise. I never ride without earplugs, either some custom fit plugs I got at a gun show, or from a [box of disposeables](https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Disposable-MAX-1/dp/B0013A0C0Y/ "A box will last you for years"). You may also want to look into a Windjammer to further reduce wind noise.

To help with visual acuity, consider getting multiple visors and a helmet where changing visors is easy. It's simple enough to try visor removal and replacement in-store to weed out the bad ones. Think dark smoke when it's sunny, yellow for glare, and pinlock-equipped for when it's foggy. You don't really want to mess with goggles for the highway.

I'd stay away from brimmed dual-sport style helmets, the brim can act as a sail and cause discomfort at high speeds.

Consider adding a Bluetooth intercom system if you want to listen to podcasts, navigation prompts, or other entertainment during your long trips. Higher end helmets can be fit with nice, integrated systems.

For color choice, statistically, wearing a white or hi-vis colored helmet will tend to reduce SMIDSYs.

I use these guys. They come in a box with a jillion of them with each pair sealed in plastic for not very many dollars. They're a little bit smaller than typical foam plugs so they fit well inside the ear and are so soft and comfortable that I don't feel them at all even on hour+ commutes. I wear each pair for a week or two usually (daily use) by which point they get a little dirty from my hands and I replace them. They would last much longer than that but I like having a nice clean set in my ears and why not.

Welcome to the world of not having long-term hearing loss and tinnitus! Just because you were used to the sound level before doesn't mean it wasn't damaging your hearing. Maybe I take it a little more seriously than most because I've spent a lot of time and money having my ears/hearing surgically repaired at one point so they're something of an investment to me, but trust me when I say the only people that don't care about long term hearing damage are people that have ever experienced being deaf. It fucking sucks (sorry deaf people.)

I've tried Mack's, Hearos, and a bunch of other brands and in terms of comfort and noise reduction ability i haven't found anything better (plus they are individually wrapped so i always keep a bunch of pairs in my backpack)

I actually find the Howard Leight MAX earplugs to be slightly superior to the Laser Lite earplugs. They also have a slightly higher protection rating of NRR 33 vs NRR 32.

I organize concerts/tours for a living, so I spend a lot of my time in clubs/venues, where it's crucial to protect my hearing. One problem - I have extremely small ear canals.

These things changed the game for me, and at a reasonable price, too! :)

These are the ones I use; cheap, and effective. I use what is meant to be the lowest level of sound reduction and it was fine for whole band playing indoors, even when I was on the end of the circle next to the drummers.

These are my favorite.

I highly suggest earplugs. I am a light sleeper and noises from neighbors would drive me batty (even when not trying to sleep). I bought these from amazon and they have been a life saver Flents Quiet Please Ear Plugs (50 Pair) NRR 29 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001J4HB1C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_v5HUDbGV8X6DJ

I've tried Etymotic, standard fit, and they just ended up hurting my ear canals. Unfortunately they only have "standard fit" and "large fit". With no option for a smaller fit I had to look for an alternative.

I really lie the fit and dB reduction of the Flents ear plugs and bought a jar of them: http://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-50-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C

I highly recommend getting molded earplugs for $10 from Amazon for festivals and such. The flesh colored ones are all but invisible.

Cheap, disposable ear plugs make live music sound like shit. Spring for the good ones.

Edit: Here's the ones I have. Absolutely worth the 20ish bucks.

u/nsfwsten · 3 pointsr/gundeals

The best earplugs out there are rated for 33 these are the ones I use at work.

I use them until they start to get dirty, If you keep them in a clean bag in your range kit you can probably get several trips out of them.

Some people say you can clean them but at 200 for $20 its not worth it.

I love these guys: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NP79YM/

And yes, I can still hear my alarm no problem. I just check to be sure the volume is set to 60% + (my phone is my alarm).

Spark Plugs. Way better than anything you can get at a drugstore.

I've had good experiences with these:

That is like the only Winkeyless model I would consider using.

Buy https://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C?th=1 and place a post-it note: "take two if you have noise complaints."

Since I didn’t see any links to purchase any of these ‘acoustic earplugs’ I did some research on my own:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00P2NTVPA/ref=pd_aw_lpo_267_tr_img_2/143-8274802-1902140?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9N8617F0E5PVG677M9GN

Seem to be the top rated on amazon. Thoughts, anyone who owns?

u/kingcrackerjacks · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I've been very happy with these. I've ridden with foam plugs and i think they block my sena's speakers a little too much. Plus with the ceramic plugs you can still clearly hear your exhaust when you get on it.

Hook it onto your keychain and you will never forget about your earplugs again

Oh god I'm at like a [8] and I was reading this and as soon as I got to the bit about the girl swearing and being really loud I immediately panicked and was like "GOD WHAT IF IT WAS ME" because I tend to curse at high decibels, even though I haven't been on a college campus in 2 years and it certainly could not have been.
In that split second I felt terrible!

Seriously though man, invest in some half decent earplugs. I can't fall asleep in headphones, these things are a life saver. Get shtoned and sleepy in peace!

u/naturalstrike · 2 pointsr/Tools

Exactly what this guy said. The soft foamy ones are way more comfortable and block wounds very well.
I'm personally partial to these:
