Where do you live? Wikipedia has a great rundown of bike laws and rules, especially for California, which is where I live. I'm assuming the same thing exists on Wikipedia for other states.

  • Laws

As far as I know though, anywhere you live, you're a vehicle by law. In most places it is illegal for you to ride on the sidewalk, but even if it isn't, it is much safer to ride on the street if you know what you're doing. Look on google maps for a while to check out various routes to your school. I consider myself to be pretty good at planning routes. If you want, you can reply or PM me about where you start and where your school is.

  • Locks

You'll definitely want a good U-lock for your bike, as well as anything from another U-lock or a cable. From the picture, it looks like that cable is a combination or keyhole lock cable. I'm not sure, but I think I've heard that the locks on those can be fairly weak, so getting a regular cable like this one, which is four feet long (there is also a 7 foot long one). The best way to lock up a bike with a U-lock/cable combination is to lock the frame and back wheel with the U-lock to the bike rack, then the cable loops through the lock and front tire

  • Cargo

What kinds of things do you need to take to school? Just books and stuff? If you need to take a laptop like I do (and it's a large laptop), I found that the Topeak racks like this one is fantastic because with this bag, you can fit the laptop in to the bag, and slide the bag on to the rack. I use some bungee cords when moving my laptop in it just in case, but it's very secure and the laptop has worked fine. It even comes with a water proof cover. I've taken my laptop through heavy rain at least a few times now. If you look around online for those enough you can find some good deals. I got the bag for about 80 dollars, when MSRP is around 150.

I just noticed the bag under your seat. I use that space for my light, but what I did with my bag is I strapped it to the side of my bike rack, as you can see in the picture of my bike below.

  • Shifting

Looks like you have regular thumb shifters. Left hand is for the front derailleur (The gears around the pedals), and the right hand is for the rear derailleur. On the left hand, the larger the gear is, the harder it is to pedal. On the right hand, the smaller the gear (or cog) is, the harder it is to pedal. You'll figure it out. Just go to a parking lot somewhere and experiment. You may need to do some adjustments if the bike is old or something.

  • Lights

You will definitely need lights then. I don't care what the laws state, you should have at least one rear and one front light. I have two of each.

You should get a front light that will cast a good amount of light ahead of you. A "too see" light. Most cheap bike lights are "to be seen" lights. They let other cars see you, but you won't be able to see where you are going well. You might as well get a smaller "be seen" light that flashes for day use, just to help drivers see you. The more they see you, the better.

For rear lights, I would even recommend two lights. With a rack, you'll be able to put one light on the end of the rack, and another on your seat post, like my bike. I always have my lights on during the day, just to help with people to see me. It probably isn't too noticeable, but with very bright lights it definitely can be. If you're in a shaded area or under a bridge though, they will help. At night, a flashing light will be the most noticable to other drivers, but it is difficult to judge distance and speed on a single flashing light when the bike cannot be seen, so I have one light on flashing, and my other light steady so drivers can see my movements and judge how far they are from me. Try to angle the lights so they'll be a little higher that parallel with the ground. You don't want your light to be pointing at the ground, or worse, hidden behind your bike rack.

Headlights: Very bright and cheap Chinese copy of a more expensive light by MagicShine. I got this a few weeks ago and it's great for night use. The handlebar mount is a little rickety though. I'm going through the same problem. If you don't want to gamble with cheap parts, there are two other okay lights that will be more secure, but sacrifice brightness. Link and Link

Taillights: This is a review of a bunch of lights with a lot of info. I use This and the tail light from this. I plan on replacing the Schwinn light with a brand new light that came out recently, the Solas 2-watt. It's hard to find right now, but if you search it on google there are several stores selling it from 38 - 45 dollars.

Early congrats! I'm so glad you plowed through and made it :) Kudos to you <3

The most valuable life lesson I've learned actually came from my parents when I was in senior year of high school. I couldn't decide what career path to follow; they wanted me to be a pharmacist or something in the medical field, but I wasn't too psyched about staying in school for another 8 years, plus how much it would cost to pay for tuition. I love science and stuff, but my heart wasn't really into that career choice. My mother told me to go with the career path that would make me the happiest, because chances are if you're going to do this for the rest of your life, it's better to be happy doing something you love rather than something to just put bread on the table. That's why I decided to put my love for computers and art together and go into Computer Art and Animation, in the VFX/2D field. The industry is in pretty crappy shape right now, but as long as I keep loving what I do, I'll power through it :) I was schooled !

Since my major isn't quite kind on my wallet, I'd think that at least saving money on gas and subway fare by riding my bike would be helpful. But I don't have a bike lock, so if anything, this would be the most helpful thing for me under $15 :)

Thank you so much for this contest, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors! <3

I'll highly recommend getting a good bar light, and a helmet light. Good lights are expensive but oh so worth it - they're bright, rugged, long-lasting, etc. Lighting up the trail like you have car headlights is so much fun, especially if you've only used crappy lights before!

Here's my picks. They might not be the best, but I like them. All have USB charging too.

Bar light: Fenix BC30R. Sturdy, accurate battery meter, long lasting, bright. Not crazy expensive but it's wayyy nicer than most cheap lights. Doesn't dim over time too; it's good at keeping the same brightness until it dies.

Helmet mount light: Niterider Micro 750. It's reasonably priced on sale, but doesn't last that long on high mode - and gets dimmer over time. Not an amazing light but it works - I just wish the helmet mount was better.

Red light no.1: Cygolight Hotshot 100. Cheap, bright, reliable, many blinky options. I like that it has a clip, so I usually attach to my pack.

Red light no.2: cheap oval LED light like this; mount it on my helmet so cars can see me better. A light "to be seen" doesn't have to be bright or amazing, and it seems the more lights the better in traffic. Having two lights far apart (like helmet and bottom of pack) helps depth+speed perception for cars/riders seeing you.

I do a fair amount of night riding in my commute. Here are my tips:

  • I have a front solid light, mounted from my fork crown, powered by a dynahub.
  • The dynahub also powers a solid red taillight, attached to the back of my rack
  • I have a blinking white light on the top of my helmet, facing front. I run this on blink mode, to be visible to drivers.
  • I have a blinking red taillight on the top of my helmet, facing back.

So, I have two front white lights (one solid, one blinking), and two rear red taillights (one solid, one blinking).

The dynahub wheel was expensive, but after riding this for 3+ years, I am so glad I got it. I never have to worry any more about batteries, batteries dying mid-ride, remembering to charge the lights, etc. It just works.

I think the helmet lights are important because they give you more visibility simply because they are higher off the ground, and there could be times where a driver can't see your lights that are at a handlebar or seat post height, but they can see your head.

If anyone is interested, here are links to my gear, all of which I endorse:

I have two light kits on my two bikes, and I really like both of them.

https://www.amazon.com/Cygolite-Metro-Hotshot-Light-Combo/dp/B01IO12Q4O/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1536965325&sr=8-7&keywords=cygolite+metro

You can also find that with just the headlight, but I like that both of them are easily rechargeable via micro USB. Both lights are super bright, and I’ve ran them for close to two hours with no issues with the batteries.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MG7677G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This second setup, I like best. The headlight and the battery pack are separate, and the taillight uses two watch batteries. The watch batteries seem to last about 30 hours of use.

Both of the kits I use are super easy to install, and both of them allow you to very easily unmount when you don’t need them. Both kits also provide powerful light facing forward in a long broad arc.

Hello! This is my second year bike commuting and I love it! The coldest days of the year in Baltimore look around -15C so it shouldn't be too bad! Things I use/suggest are the following

For you:

Bike helmet cover, something like this to keep in the warmth, but doesnt get too hot

Pair of ski goggles

Gloves

Buff

A pair of cycling only outdoor pants to wear as 'ski pants' over your regular pants like these

Wool socks (Costco has great merino wool ones)

For the bike:

Fenders

A nice set of lights like these

Bar mitts like these

And just make sure you keep up with cleaning the salt and grime off your bike!

Good luck!

If you buy "cheap", chances are that you're either buying something that's built to be a temporary toy or buying stolen (thus increasing demand for stolen bikes). What you need to do is ask, "Where can I get the cheapest price for an unstolen bike that will last me four years?"

The ASUCD Bike Barn's Aggie Bike Buy option is an incredibly good deal that few bike shops can match. https://asucd-bikebuy.ucdavis.edu/product-category/bikes/ The guy who runs the shop (Robert) is ultra-sensitive about the cost of bikes but since he and his team has to fix the bikes, he's always looking for the best value. An 8-speed Biria ($475) will be enough bike for most riders. Coupled with their 4-year unlimited labor plan ($175), you will have a bike that will work well for 4 years. (Just make sure to put the plan to use! If something doesn't feel or sound right, take your bike in for a check-up!)

But you also have to keep that bike secure, so you NEED to purchase at LEAST one great lock and at LEAST an supplemental cable. My favorite setup is the Kryptonite Evo4 standard size U-lock and cable. https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-2079-Evolution-Bicycle-KryptoFlex/dp/B06XZT8KZ1/ It comes with an anti-theft guarantee of $1,500 (as long as you register the lock, use it correctly, and file a police report if the bike is stolen)!

That's probably more money than you want to spend, right? $475+$175+$60 = $710 (plus tax). But that will get you:

A non-stolen bike you want to ride, will be rideable for 4+ years, and that will likely not be stolen (if you actually use the lock correctly). If you purchase a "cheap bike" (Walmart, Target, Costco, Big5, etc.), you'd be lucky if it lasts the year. And if your bike doesn't work, then you've just wasted your money.

u/kykin · 7 pointsr/Hawaii

I've been an Oahu biker since I moved here from Maui in 2008. I attended UH and two years had gone by before I needed a car. Beyond the infrequent trips into town that require a car to haul back things from the mall or walmart, I've always been able to get around just fine with my bike, theBus, or a combination of the two.

The campus is very bike-friendly, and if you have any experience riding with cars on the roads, you shouldn't have a problem adapting.

However, it always seems that Hawaii drivers haven't had any experience riding with bikes on the roads, so you'll need to be extra careful. Drivers don't know what they're doing sometimes, or what to watch out for, which means you'll need to watch out for them. Imagine all the cars don't have brakes; that's how I ride.

Most of the major roads have bike lanes, but I prefer the sidewalk when I ride.

But beyond needing to bike defensively, you don't have much to worry about. Exercise good defensive bike security (lock it up well when you walk away) so invest in a really good lock. Personally, I have one of these and one of these for when I lock up my ride outside overnight.

Expect lots of hills. The island is just one big hill, so you'll be fighting several inclines at some point in the day. Because of our humidity, its really easy to work up a decent sweat when riding. I keep an extra shirt with me to change into so I look at least decent in between rides.

Since you're going to be a student, most of your rides will be between campus, your apartment (if you live off-campus), and the mall. Occasionally downtown. The rides in between these are relatively easy, done in about 15 minutes in any direction. The biggest of the climb (<500ft over 2.5 miles) being from town/the mall to campus.

If you're into long-distance riding for exercise, there is a long stretch of flat road that people ride all the time. It has a bike lane and wide right-shoulder (mostly used by buses). It should take you about 30-40 minutes to ride if you're an experienced rider.

Check out your routes on google maps (and street view. It helps) to get an idea of how long and where you'll be riding. Happy riding and hope this was helpful.

u/Where_You_Want_To_Be · 2 pointsr/hondagrom

I had my GSXR600 stolen a few years ago, luckily I put GPS on it and I was able to recover it. I left it unlocked at my old apartment complex (used to chain it to a post with a huge Kryptonite MC chain/lock) for less than 6 hours, ONE TIME, and it was gone.

Besides using a disc brake lock, I also bought one of these:

D-yun Fake CAR Motor Alarm No Wiring Only Led Flash https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PBQN9OC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uSRzDb46HMNFN

It’s just a flashing LED, and I velcro’d the battery box to the frame underneath a fairing, so I can still switch it on and off easily, and change out the batteries. Then, I put the LED kind of near the triple clamp so that you can see it blinking if you were to sit on the bike, or look near the gauges. I use Lithium batteries and the thing lasts for 4 months or so, sometimes I even forget to turn the LED off for weeks, and it still doesn’t die. I would say this is absolutely worth the $10 on amazon.

Most bike thefts are just crimes of opportunity, and if someone sees a little light blinking down near your gauges, the best you can hope for is that they move on to someone else’s bike.

I recommend a disk brake lock, but with Groms, the things are so light that it’s not really hard to just pick it up and put it in the back of a truck and drive off. So don’t rely solely on the disk lock. Locking it to a post with a serious chain is much better than just a disk brake lock, but then you have to bring a chain with you in your backpack. I used to use this one at my apartment complex, but there's no way you could carry it around in a backpack, the thing weighs like 20 pounds. (Also, you can see in the reviews plenty of people still cut through these. A battery-powered angle grinder will pretty much get you through most locks/chains. Which is why the goal is just to make your bike harder to steal than all the other bikes around it.)

The thing with bikes is, if someone wants it bad enough, they will take it. Whether that means using a cutoff wheel to cut your chain in 15 seconds, or picking it up and putting it in the bed of their truck, etc. The best thing you can do is make your bike harder to steal, so they are less inclined to steal it.

If you want full protection, I highly recommend buying a GPS unit, I have two SpotTrace units that I bought on Amazon, you pay monthly but there is a promo code rn for 50% off of an annual subscription, so I think I got a whole year of service for $100. Their app works pretty well too, and if you use Energizer Lithium batteries, they last for several months. The ONLY reason I was able to recover my GSXR was because it had GPS. If it weren’t for that, I’d have never seen it again. There are other GPS units on Amazon too, SpyTech (I think?) makes one that uses 4G data, so if you live somewhere with good cell coverage, that's a good choice too. I think SpotTrace uses satellite data, so it's good for Boats, hot air balloons, etc (things that travel far outside of cell coverage) but it has also always worked well for me on my cars and bikes.

EDIT: The only reason I don’t like disk brakes with alarms is that some of them are so sensitive that they start going off every time the wind blows. You don’t wanna be the guy in your neighborhood whose alarm is going off every 15 minutes while you’re not home. Also, I’ve seen people pretty much “silence” those alarms with chewing gum.

EDIT 2: Also, know that the handlebar lock (the one you engage with your key) is a joke. Most bikes handlebars can be unlocked by sitting on the seat, leaning back, and kicking the bars using your legs and leverage. Sure, it will break the lock mechanism, but the thief doesn't care.

u/latarian · 3 pointsr/TorontoJustice

I have a couple custom made bikes (single speed not fixed gear) I'd say approximately $500 different parts etc.

I use this

It's heavy as fuck, but I ride with a messenger bag so it's not too bad. I lock my back wheel and my frame to the CENTER of the bike post. Someone showed that you can actually pop off the round part with a 2X4 there was an article about it a few years ago, since then they made some changes to the bike posts, but there are still a few around that can be gotten this way.

If I'm leaving my bike over night I lock another chain around my front wheel to the U-lock.

My bike is really nice, but it doesn't look like much. Keep that in mind when you purchase a bike. often a 1200 dollar bike looks like it's worth 1200 dollars. My bike's seat has a few rips in it, and there's some scratches on the paint job etc.

I use it for transportation so I really only care about it's functionality.

If you want your bike to not get stolen, invest in a good lock. Dont whine about how heavy it is, because it probably will save your bike.

That is my advice.

u/SwervingNShit · 1 pointr/cycling

It's always suggested to get a new helmet. You don't know if it's been involved in a slight crash or had anything happen to it that would compromise its safety.

What kind of lights did you get??

I'd like to think I have some properly good lights and I've only spent ~$70 on them

Here's what I have: 2Watt Cygolite hotshot tail light ~$30 and another Cygolite headlight that can do short 600lm flashes, but has a few modes around 500lm or so, $50, but this is what I ordered last month for a friend who recently got into cycling, same 2W tail light & another headlight that's just a bump below the 550 I linked above for $60

Unless you've got some whopping mountain trail lights, I feel like $130 is a bit high, I'm all for supporting LBSs, but sometimes they get silly.

Anyways, stay safe & nice fucking deal on the bike.

u/CamelCavalry · 4 pointsr/lifehacks

/r/bicycling will be very happy to help you with this if you decide you want information. Here's the short version:

Locks aren't guarantees, they are deterrents. You just have to make your bike not worth stealing. Whenever possible, lock your bike in an area with plenty of pedestrian traffic, and where other bikes are locked.

Cable locks (example) are weak. They are for keeping somebody from walking away with your bike. If a thief has come to steal bikes, the thief will get this one, no sweat.

If you need something long like that, you can get a lock and chain (example) but be sure it's intended for use as a bike lock. Ordinary chain from a hardware store is too easily cut. This method is heavy and bulky, but it works.

My recommendation, to keep things affordable, simple, and convenient, is to buy a good U-lock (example). Kryptonite and On-Guard are popular, reliable brands, but there are others.

Most importantly, make sure you lock your frame to the bike rack. If you don't lock the frame, the battle is lost. Wheels are easily stolen, so lock these up as much as possible. If I'm being quick about it, I pass the U-Lock through the frame and rear wheel as well as the bike rack (the rear wheel is more valuable), but the front wheel can be detached to lock with the frame and rear wheel using the same lock.

You can look into locking skewers and such to protect your wheels and seat, but the priority is to use a good, strong lock to lock your frame and rear wheel to a highly visible bike rack. Also, keep a photo and detailed description of your bike WITH YOUR SERIAL NUMBER so that if anything happens, you can file a police report.

u/Dingo8urBaby · 2 pointsr/cycling

I recommend checking out /r/bikecommuting. Although it sounds like you have already been commuting by bike, so I apologize if you already know what I'm saying. I'm assuming because you are asking about what you wear for winter cycling that you do not regularly commute in winter/have a short commute.

You will need to get lights for commuting, especially as winter approaches (assuming that you are in the Northern hemisphere). I have the Cygolite Expillion 350 and the PDW Danger Zone. I once read that a blinking rear light is good for being noticed but a solid light is good for driver depth perception, so my helmet has a red light in back that I keep solid in the evening/night. I will eventually get a second real rear light.

As for clothing - what is your climate going to look like this winter? I was commuting in upstate New York and wore generic winter running tights, wool socks, UA coldgear shirt, a down vest, gloves, and a thin scarf that went around my neck and over my head under my helmet. When I wore thick wool mittens over my gloves, I was toasty in that down to 14 F. I never got goggles/glasses, but they would have been nice when it sleeted.

I don't have any cycling specific wear. I re-purpose what I already have or buy things that will work for multiple activities.

I wash my bike (or at least rinse it off) after any ride where salt from the road was kicked up. Last winter I had a toothbrush and would gently scrub my derailleurs to get off the ice and would use a damp rag to wipe it down. Again, I was biking in upstate New York. I have since moved south and don't yet know what this winter will mean for biking. I'm assuming a lot less ice and a lot less salt.

u/Lieutenant_Crunch · 2 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

I wouldn't get a brooks. They are pricey because they become super comfortable after some use, but the downside is that they are theft magnets. If you get one, lock your saddle with a cable, or take it in with you, but these things go missing on my campus all the time. I'd just ride the stock for a while, when you want to upgrade, go into your LBS and nab one from them.

As for locks, U-lock+Cable in conjunction will be best. If you pick one, do a u-lock. Kryptonite is well-recommended. They have a few models:

The New York is the big boy, nigh indestructible lock. But probably not necessary for a windsor the hour.

Here's what I use, but I sort of regret it. It feels cheaper (because it was cheaper) than other kryptonite locks I've used. The lock itself is fine, but I have trouble with my key after a few months of use (have to jiggle it around for a bit for it to disengage). If you're on a campus or in a smaller town, it'd be fine.

Just ordered this. My buddy has one and it's brilliant. Super light and small (smallness is actually a benefit as far as security). Can fit in your back pocket.

u/furrald · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

Do you also do any cycling? One thing you could do is buy a nice bike light which could also be used as a handheld torch. If you don't bike, this would probably add cost unnecessarily.

I have used this one for about a year now, and I love it. It's super bright, waterproof, and comes with 2 usb rechargeable batteries. I've also used it handheld to supplement a headlamp for night trail running. Not sure about shipping outside of us.

Sounds like a really cool adventure!

u/lastfire · 3 pointsr/uwaterloo

That's just the way people are .. people will steal whatever they can get your hands on.

Do you have the serial number of the bike? You might be able to go to the police and report the theft and hope someone gets back to you.

Unfortunately this might be one of those times where you learn a lesson and move on since bike theft is pretty common in Waterloo (just do a quick google search and you'll find multiple instances of this happening)

Some tips for next time:

make sure to buy a decent U-Lock with a cable it's going to be bulky and expensive but worth it since thieves go for the easiest bike they can get their hands on. That means any bike locked with a cable lock can easily be cut in a matter of seconds with a pair of decent bolt cutters without much work. While we're on that point make sure to lock your bike securely. People generally recommend the Sheldon Brown Bike Lock method since it locks the frame and back wheel to the post making it more difficult to cut.

Second is to never let your bike unattended overnight especially if it is a public area like the garage of 333 Lester. Even if the building has a controlled entry secured bike room its always best to keep it in your own suite.

Yes it does suck having it stolen, you might have some luck if you browse kijiji/craiglist/fb buy and sell forums and see if you can find a bike that looks like that. Then if possible meet up in a secure location (police station) and examine the bike serial number/identifying features. Just know that a lot of the time it is very difficult to trace down theives and you might just have to take the loss.

I have a Cygolite Metro 400 that I got as a bundle with a Cygolite Hotshot taillight on Amazon. They’re excellent. Used them regularly for three years and still going strong.

The bundle is about $50 here.

They have even brighter versions available too. the newest bundle is the Metro 700 + Hotshot and goes for about $100. The 400 is bright enough for me and I mostly use the medium setting. The taillight might be the brightest one I’ve ever seen.

u/minniesnowtah · 2 pointsr/cycling

I got this one about a year ago. It's super light and comes with a frame mount, and can be used for both schrader and presta. It's the best portable I've used so far, but like other posters have mentioned can be hard to get your tires to a high enough psi.

A year isn't long enough to say much about durability, but there are 600+ reviews on amazon you can take a peek at if you're interested.

All in all, it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. Need something to help you in a pinch that doesn't need to be refilled or anything? This is it. If you need something to keep you going on a century, look elsewhere.

I've been biking to work for over a decade now. I figure I save somewhere between $3000 and $4000 a year (just parking where I work costs almost $1000 every year!). The other month, I realized I had a bad wheel that needed replacement (factory defect I didn't notice for a long time). Rebuilding a brand new wheel and some other little maintenance things hit me at $180. There was a split second of outrage until I realized that's the only money I've spent on this bike, aside from a new tube or two, in 5 years.

If you do go the bike route, make sure you spend your money on a good helmet and great lights. There are some really great panniers out there that will allow you to grocery shop and carry tons of stuff. You'll never look back.

I highly, highly recommend getting a bike from Bikes Direct. They have some amazing bikes at amazing prices. The deal is that the bikes have some paint blemishes and aren't "perfect" so they can't be sold by the manufacturer. I had a hard time finding the paint blemishes on mine and they were on the rack the bike came with!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I went with the Planet Bike Blaze 2watt LED Headlamp for just about the same price as the combo you are looking at, and it has served me well. It can easily be detached for security and general flashlight use, has a low/bright/flash system, and that flash has an attention grabbing pattern. As another commenter mentioned, the light spill is better on a bike light than a more focused general use flashlight. Plus, this thing is 2watts, it's bright! I've actually had a driver thank me for my lights (then again, I also had this tail light blaring and another cheap Wal-Mart light on the rear).

u/tlogank · 3 pointsr/bicycling

I'm with you on bike mirrors and confusion on why so many riders seem to not like them. I got one because I commute a lot now, and I just got tired of constantly looking back. Since I don't always wear a helmet, I got this mirror: http://www.amazon.com/Mirrycle-MTB-Mountain-Bicycle-Mirror/dp/B0009R96YK for my road bike (yes, it says mtn bike, but it works great on my roadie) and I absolutely love it. It is easy to take on and off, and is just extremely convenient for less than $15.

u/Jessie_James · 3 pointsr/bicycling

What kind of lights are you using?

For the front, you may want to check out the Design Shine Lights ( http://www.DesignShineLighting.com ) which are quite bright, and should be available soon. Or check out the Planet Bike 2w headlight which blinks:

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Blaze-2Watt-Headlight/dp/B0015R1NE4/ref=pd_bxgy_sg_img_b

I am actually using the Nu Flare LED flashlight and a handlebar flashlight mount because it's a lot brighter than the Planet Bike headlight, but it doesn't blink so that may not work for you ...

http://www.amazon.com/Nu-Flare-77R92L-Ultrabright-Aluminum-Flashlight/dp/B001LYYO10/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1318951039&sr=8-3

http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Mount-for-Bike-Handlebar/dp/B004OADU22/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1319730599&sr=1-1-catcorr

NOTE: This mount is okay for my use, you may not like it it you have to remove your lights.

For the rear, I love my Planet Bike Turbo Superflash:

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Superflash-Turbo-Light/dp/B004U5PV5A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318366148&sr=8-1

I emailed Planet Bike and asked them to make a White and Yellow Turbo flash, which I think would take care of front-mount for me.

Finally, you may want to get a little air horn for your bike. Someone did a write here on Reddit a few weeks ago. This is the horn:

http://www.amazon.com/SeaSense-1-4oz-50074011-Image-Reference/dp/B000XQ5B1Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1VY5NBV2BPVP6&colid=2ANXR60WOJLC

Wiring one into the bikes battery was too complicated for me to want to figure out, but I bought this rechargeable brake light for $25 and have been thoroughly impressed by it; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DF8RTM4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_yIoWDb7M84P2Q

Since I have a trunk bag on my rack I scrapped the mounting hardware they gave me and ziptied it on top of the mounting spot for the stock light. It's got a good battery life and charges quick but if you're still interested in wiring a tail light in I suggest checking asking around the Juiced Bikes enthusiasts or Modded Juiced Bikes group on Facebook if you're on there.

Hey OP. Friendly neighborhood lockpicker here. I pick locks as a hobby and keep up with the security of a lot of the locks that are released. I also recently got a ninebot and therefore wanted a U-lock for it as well. The kryptonite lock you suggested here is actually a good one. I'd avoid the master lock cuffs posted above, master locks are notoriously shit and those cuffs are actually one of the better ones from them, but they're still shit. And I'd never get the last one you posted, I've never even heard of it and you'd likely be paying $20 to get your scooter stolen. As a general rule of thumb, if you care about something, you should care about spending the money for a good lock for it. That being said, here's the lock I decided on for my scooter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XZT8KZ1/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_laC3Db2XXBFF7. I'd suggest that one or one of the other similar ones in that line. The kryptonite one you posted is likely still good, but I know that kryptonite used plastic covers over the lock body of some of their bike locks that could be destroyed with a heat gun or blow torch to easily open the lock. The one I suggested is all metal. Good luck with your lock needs.

Thank you. I'm not a spandex wearing type of bicycler (and the world thanks me for saving them a trip to /r/eyebleach), so weight isn't important to me. With my circumference, the difference in weight isn't important, I just have to be able to carry it on the bike (or the bag). That seems like a better price than I would have thought, though. Huh.

In my case, I need it specifically for punctures on the trail. I agree a good pump at home is wise. Not sure why, But I guess I never thought to compare the good tire to the flat for close-enough pressure. Sadly, I've gone through two tubes in a very short time. Still got a couple of CO2 canisters left, but I'd like to leave those to emergency-emergencies. I don't mind stopping for 10-15 minutes to pump up a tire after patching it.
EDIT: Thank you!

I just got:
Front - Cygolite 350
Back - Cateye Rapid3

Spent just over $100. The front light is incredibly bright at the brightest setting. There are two lower settings and a strobe mode that makes me think of that scene from the movie Kickass. The rear light blink modes are great for streets and trails and the always on mode is really bright. FWIW.

It straps onto the rails of the saddle so it's tucked out of the way and won't shift around. May not be the best option if you're running hydration behind the saddle for tri, but I love it for my road bike (Felt AR with a fat aero post). It also has a bunch of cool features like auto on/off when you start moving and going white when you're braking. Battery lasts forever too.

Any lock can be broken given time, more secure locks take more time. There are various opinions and you can look at various tests people have done (Men's Journal/Gizmodo). However I tend to recommend a u-lock, the chains are very secure but heavy.

Example of a Chain

The Lock I Have

Every brand has various security levels, so you can research and see where your cost to security ratio is, but a cheap lock will be cheap and easier to get through.

u/alc6379 · 3 pointsr/chicago

Speaking of limited means, people will steal a bike that's only worth $100. $100 can be a lot to someone with limited means. If they lose their bike and have trouble getting into work, they're out even more.

That sounds obvious, but I'm getting somewhere with it. The argument of "they should protect their stuff better" falls flat when you start talking about people of limited means. A "decent" lock runs about $35-40. That's a lock you're going to be able to break quickly if you have an angle grinder, or even just a long enough pry bar. To get really good (note: not impenetrable) security, you're looking at about $100. And that lock doesn't even include a cable like the $40 one did, so you're spending even more to make sure you don't get a wheel stolen.

So suddenly the person on the $100 used bike has to spend somewhere between an additional $40-100 to have a hope that their means of transportation won't get stolen. That puts an even greater burden on people with limited means.

u/loganmossmusic · 1 pointr/cycling

Planet bike 2 watt headlight. It is very bright so that you can see the road well and people can see you. If it is a bit too pricey you can go for the 1 watt, which is still very useable but not as bright.

Don't buy a department store bike unless you want it to fall apart in 3 weeks.

u/BensonBubbler · 7 pointsr/Portland

Not to mention they're not even that expensive. Nice rear rechargeables can be bought for $15, mine even came with a multi-tool for that price.

Front lights can be found rechargeable for like $50 which, to be honest, I haven't seen anything cheaper than that rechargeable or otherwise that produced a safe amount of light for winter riding here.

u/yeeaaapppp · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I purchased this combo for head/tail lights. I found out about it from The Sweethome and have no complaints.

For my cellphone, I picked up one of these. I never use the bottle opener, but I can say it holds just about any smartphone in a steady grip over just about any kind of terrain. My only complaint would be that it sometimes allows the phone to tap on the stem when riding over rough spots. If you mount it horizontally on the handlebars, you aren't going to have the same problem, I suppose. I would still buy it again.

I picked up one of these bells. Very cool, tiny, tough and loud.

If you ride with drop handlebars, I fond a set of cross levers to be quite a lifesaver when I am hanging out on the middle of the bar.

A portable pump (I want one of these). I guess CO2 works, but what if you have a slow leak, no spare and you forgot to cap the patch kit glue?

A small saddle bag with spare tube, patch kit, multi-tool and tire levers.

A rear rack (but never one attached to the seatpost, please) for different bags, baskets or objects I want to haul around with me. I usually leave it off because I ride more for pleasure than commuting these days.

A decent U-Lock and cable to lock it all up. If you can afford it, one of these seems to be popular, though I live in a smaller town that doesn't need quite the same level of security.

u/303onrepeat · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I posted this at r/cycling with no responses so I'll try here since it seems more active.

I am in need of a light (soon).

I am starting to ride my bike to work, and with winter setting in I'll be riding in the dark when it's not freezing out. I ran across these two lights on Amazon, are they any good?

1st choice: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Rechargeable-Lumen-Bicycle-Light/dp/B00GJZ015Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1410199224&sr=1-1

2nd choice: http://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-LIFETIME-GUARANTEE-SHIPPING-INTENSITY/dp/B00GGR0XD0/ref=sr_1_3?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1410199224&sr=1-3

Those were the top two ranked so I'm not married to them, just trying to get a feel for what I should look at.

I'm riding on streets/frontage roads for 10 miles each way, about 40 minutes of ride time each way. I'm not opposed to an external battery pack. If it matters my bike is a Trek 3900 that is a few years old.

Thanks!

u/tuctrohs · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

Maybe just the metro 850 for $40?

Or the fenders: a good SKS Longboard set is in the $40-50 range.

For a tail light, I like the hotrod better than the hotshot. Hmm, there's now an even brighter model to consider.

u/therealw00zy · 1 pointr/ebikes

You'll have to turn it on but it will turn off when it loses power. Good brightness but I would be happier if it had more flood

u/Projectile_Setback · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

Just to be specific, these are the two models I'm talking about.

Chain This model specifically because it's the 18mm version with the Fahgettaboudit lock. The chain being 18mm means it's too large to cut with bolt cutters. The lock is also a Fahgettaboudit style lock which means it has two locking hasps, requiring a minimum of two cuts to remove the lock itself. It's a pain to get through either with a battery powered angle grinder, though that will work eventually. Angle grinder > any lock unfortunately.

U-Lock This is my every-day lock, and it's this one because it's the smaller of the two, which prevents people from jamming a jack in there. I don't know if you could even get it done without something like a 12 or 15 ton bottle jack, but I like the security. There's less flexibility in what you can lock to, but it's security is top shelf.

Also highly recomended

u/farineziq · 1 pointr/cycling

Your story saddens me. If you live in a big city, bike stealing is a real problem. However, bike is way to fun and good for you to give up. To avoid being stolen in the future, here are my suggestions.

Have the best lock you can find. Even the most expensive lock kit is still probably cheaper than buying a new bike. Also, make sure you watch a couple youtube tutorials on how to lock your bike, just to be sure you're making the best out of it. Also, you can choose a more modest bike, or simply make it look modest. Maybe don't clean it too often, etc, be creative!

If you live in a big city, you will most likely lock it close to many other bicycles. If yours has the thoughest lock and doesn't look like the best deal they can come up with, shitty bike stealers won't choose yours.

That said, go back to the camera guys and the police. They can't all be dicks. Seriously, do it!

Personally, I lock my bike with this U-Lock around the back wheel and the body and this for the front wheel. I also keep easy to remove valuable stuff in my backpack.

I got this really cheap one on Amazon for $10. The spanners on it are crap, but other than that it's served me well and taken care of one flat so far.
I got a decent pump (on sale) and also carry some paper towel and a spare tube. Since my rear wheel isn't quick release, I also have a small adjustable wrench. I ended up making my own little bag to fit it all.

I didn't want to spend a ton starting out, so I think it was a decent place to start. I'll probably upgrade parts over time when they break/wear out.

>For pretty much most other household items I have found prices to be comparable or even better at a local retailer. I went to buy a bicycle lock on Amazon this weekend and they had the brand I wanted in a range of 36 - 80 USD depending on model. Local retailer had the same brand in the 25-40 USD range. I have had similar experiences with a lot of different products in the same bucket of "general stuff." The pricing is not always better.

Hmm lets spend 10 seconds on amazon.. Oh hey there's one for $25, just like the stores. Why does that exist? This guy told me online wasn't always cheaper yet every single thing in the world is by definition cheaper if you don't need to spend thousands of dollars a month on a storefront..

Anything that is a major brand or common product will always be cheaper online by very definition of not having to pay for a storefront, if you can't find it cheaper online then you simply aren't looking in the right place or manner.

To me sounds like a pair of right angle headlamps would suit you well. Zebralights are available in different beam patterns.

  • H600 - most throwy
  • H604 - most floody (or older H603)
  • H600F - more inbetween

All\most of these are available in different tints (with another letter such as w\d\c added to it).

Based off your requirements H604w\d\c as your flood light and either one of the H600 depending on how floody you want the other light to be.

Depending on helmet size just use the strap for that, you can also get a bike mount like this.
. Not sure about chest mounting off hand.

I commute to work at night as well. I use a Cygolite Expillion 350 headlight on the front and two Planet Bike Superflash taillights on the back. I also wear a yellow traffic safety vest with retro-reflective stripes.

I have been riding at night for more than a year now without incident. I have been told by a coworker who passed me riding to work at night that he could see me a half mile away, lit up and glowing like a Christmas tree. All of this stuff will cost about $100, but it could save your life.

Here you go. HIGHLY recommend. I bought this same pair two years ago, been using it almost daily and it's still going strong. It's bright, rechargeable, and has endured heavy rain with no problems. Detaches easily (but not accidentally) and doubles as a solid flashlight.

u/themcan · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

That's pretty much how I started my 2 mile commute in 2015. I went reading and bought the Wirecutter's reccommendation at the time, a Trek 7.2 (though I did go for the 2014 7.4 Disc, since my shop had it on a good sale). I added fenders and a kickstand immediately, grabbed a cheap (but safe) Wal-Mart helmet and lights, and started riding when the weather was decent. As I needed them, I added elastic, reflective ankle bands to keep my jeans out of the chain, got a set of decent gloves for cooler weather, a rear rack and expandable trunk bag, upgraded my lights, and bought a cheap bike computer from Aldi.

After a few years, I had a better idea of what I really wanted, so last fall I sold the hybrid and picked up a gravel bike to get off the 50mph highway and onto the gravel shoulder and replaced my helmet with a more comfortable and better ventilated one. I moved over the rear rack, bought new, larger fenders and a kickstand, but didn't bother with the computer and just got a handlebar phone mount since I track everything on Strava anyways.

Of course I don't NEED all of this to bike commute, but it makes it easier/more comforable/etc. to do so. The only thing I've regretted is the fancy gloves: they work just fine, but I could have spent half the money and gotten something just as well suited to my needs. Thankfully I'm in an area with basically no bike theft, so I just use a cheap cable lock on the rare times I even bother to lock it up.

Yes, but round ones instead of this model. Slightly convex, which helped a lot, but the key was to really crank down on them to keep them from moving when I hit a bump. I tried a helmet-mounted mirror but it hated it, since it was like having something constantly flashing in the corner of my eye, plus every time I set my helmet down it got pushed out of adjustment. YMWV.

I should add, I think, that mine are 15+ years old and not scratched, but they are glass and not plastic. Don't know if this is the exact model, but mine look exactly like this one: http://www.amazon.com/ACTION-MIRROR-THIRD-EYE-BAR/dp/B0019R4LUI

Just remembered that I put one of these http://www.amazon.com/Mirrycle-MTB-Mountain-Bicycle-Mirror/dp/B0009R96YK on the heavy bike, and it's really great. Again, crank down on the fasteners to keep it from moving around due to bumps.

to prevent scratches i added 3M car door guard strips i had lying around to the bottom. They are hard plastic similar to what are on sliding gloves long boarders use. I got them from auto zone, after a few hits just peel them off and stick new ones on. They are designed to stick onto car doors on cars going 60 mph or faster so it stays put

I use one of these cable locks. It's small enough to fit in my tankbag and on the rare occasion I'm not confident in just leaving stuff laying, will run it through a jacket sleeve, helmet D-ring, and solid part of the bike. The one I have is several years old so it wasn't available in disco colors.

You could also get an inexpensive bike cable lock that's a bit more substantial but not as easy to carry.

Yes, if someone wants your gear they can cut the cable if they brought such tools along for the task. But the only thing I've ever had taken from my bike was a Winston Rodeo Award denim jacket on loan from my brother that I left in a saddlebag that someone took back in 74 while parked in my apartment in Dallas.

I bought this set as good decent lights, not the brightest, but enough to see in city/town conditions in the dead of night, probably okay if you are very rural;

http://www.amazon.com/Metro-360-Hotshot-2W-Light/dp/B00E1NQ696

As for helmets, more cost generally means lighter/more ventilation, depending on how much either of these means to you.

On locks, I'd suggest a set like this;

http://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-Kryptolok-Standard-Bicycle-FlexFrame/dp/B005YPK8G2/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1396539131&sr=1-4&keywords=kryptonite+lock+combo

it will allow you to lock the frame/rear wheel with the U, and the front wheel with the cable. It terms of safeguarding your bike, it's more like defensive driving; how, where, time of day, amount of people around, prevalence of bike theft, are bigger factors than the size of the lock.

I like having my rear light act as a "brake" light since I cycle on the road a lot.

I got this because it looks awesome. Rechargeable, auto-on (turns on when it starts moving and turns itself off after a minute not moving), pretty bright.

When I used to use a saddlebag (instead of a tool bag in a bottle cage like I do now), I used one of these mounted on the seatpost. Also has "brake light" function.

Some lights and a helmet are top on my list. Any recommendations on lights? I've got Prime so Amazon makes sense to get something quick and likely cheaper than a local shop. This is what I'm leaning towards. Areas I'd ride at night are pretty visible, so definitely just need something to alert surrounding cars.

Front light

u/ImpetuousBurro · 4 pointsr/motorcycles

I hike a lot and ride a lot and ran into the same problem. What I do is take a combination cable-style bike lock and feed it through one leg of my riding pants and one arm of my riding jacket. I usually put my daypack in the top box when I'm riding and the helmet in there when I'm hiking. As for gloves, I just leave them in the helmet. Most hiking areas are not really high crime/theft areas. If you are worried about rain, you can just throw a tarp over everything and use a bungee to secure it down.

The only article this doesn't work for is boots. My bike has side panniers as well as a top case, so I just put them in one of those since I hike in trail runners. If you hike in boots, you could just ride in those. The top case I got was a super cheap one and I haven't had any issues (even in the city) with it.

For my commute, this is what I do:

-I track it using Strava

-I keep a flat tire repair kit with me (mini pump, tire levers, patch kit, and spare tube)

-I have a headlight and a taillight and I use them DAY and night.

Taillight - http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-3034-1-Blinky-Superflash/dp/B0015R40JE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1333388151&sr=8-3

-If it's hot and/or the rainy season, I keep a change of clothes with me in a pannier, as well as the necessary supplies to clean up before changing into them.

-For long distance commutes like yours, I always have a change of clothes, because the sweat will be inevitable.

-Water!

-Plastic bags to hold my shoes/sandals/wet clothes

and another U-lock. I think it's overkill since in both my home and office we have a secure area to store bicycles.

Company offered a company car but I did the math and realised that taking the cash instead would be worth about 5k euros net per year. I figured I don't need a car at the moment and extra cash is always nice.

u/swampboy62 · 1 pointr/Kayaking

If you're worried about being seen, then mount something like this:

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--deck-mount-portable-led-bi-color-navigation-light--15830516

If you want to be able to see at night, try a waterproof rechargeable bike light:

https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Te-Rich-Waterproof-Headlight-Taillight/dp/B01MG7677G/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1523306122

I'd suggest mounting the light on a helmet - that way it points where you look, and it's not quite so close to the boat & water (the bright illumination on up close objects can blind your ability to see any distance).

Also, on anything you're worried you might drop in the water - tape a glow stick to it. You'll be glad you did if the thing you drop is your paddle.

Good luck.

Ya, or you could just buy a u-bar bike lock. Like This one. They are pretty much impossible to get off without making a lot of noise (or in rare cases getting your hands on some LN2.

Do make sure to get both the frame and front wheel when you lock it up though. Front wheels are easy to remove, and people can do it just to fuck with you.

u/joshrice · 5 pointsr/bicycling

I'm currently using the Cygolite Expilion 350-Lumen USB Rechargeable Headlight and a Planet Bike Blaze 1 Watt Led Headlight on different bikes. They're both pretty good, but if you're doing trail riding in the dark you'll likely want a bike mounted light as well as a helmet one so you can see/light-up where you're looking.

The Cygolite's lowest setting is brighter than the brightest setting of the Planet Bike, but is twice as expensive. It also has a rechargeable battery which hasn't really been a big deal as I have access to a computer all day at work and can plug it in there if needed. (It comes with a wall charger too though)

Yeah man, just moved into a place with no garage or cover and was agonizing over how to keep my Monster from being an easy target. Found an article by a guy who used to steal bikes for a living. Said those disc locks are toys, the built in steering lock just takes a few firm kicks, and if nothing else two big dudes can just pick a bike up. He recommended the lock below, and make sure its through the FRAME (not swingarm, tire comes off quick) and anchored to something truly stuck in the ground. I've got mine on a big utility pole. Keep the outside of the cover dirty, but feel free to brush out/rinse the inside every once in awhile. If you can, find a place out of view of the main road but under lighting, or consider installing an outdoor solar powered/motion activated light (can be found for like $10-$15)

I use a Topeak Pocket Rocket. I've used it for a year now and it's saved me at least 20 co2 cartridges in that time. It comes with a bracket to hold it along the water bottle mount which works really well, but you might be able to fit it in a larger saddle bag.

I checked it with a gauge and I was able to fill up a 25c tire to 120psi in about a minute. It doesn't have a hose, but at $15 it's the cheapest pump that will fill a road tire and not break when you need it.

u/Tipps · 1 pointr/UBC

A bike and the bus pass included with tuition is enough to get you anywhere in the city. As it's been pointed out, UBC is on a high hill so take that into consideration when leaving campus by bike. Note that all buses have bike racks on them, so if you just can't make it up the hill, you can hop on a bus to make it the rest of the way.

The only thing I would suggest beg you to do is to invest in a very, very good bike lock or two. UBC is polluted with bike thieves who will pluck a bike from a rack in broad daylight. A good U-Lock, properly attached, may deter most thieves - but pairing it with a heavy duty chain lock (like this) will be much more secure - especially if you are on campus late at night. It may seem like overkill, but overkill is better than leaving class to realize your only mode of transportation was stolen out from under you.

If you use a cable lock, your bike won't last a month.

I've never biked to school here. But in the GTA I had my bike stolen. Now if I'm going to leave my bike anywhere I use one of these extra large chains: https://www.amazon.ca/Kryptonite-999492-60-Inch-Fahgettaboudit-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=asc_df_B001SMUB7G/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292958473101&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12433647985033178060&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000671&hvtargid=pla-381360330145&psc=1

Anything smaller can be easily cut or removed. I don't know how bad bike theft is here. If it's anything like the GTA then I'd invest in a good lock if your bike is worth anything.

u/kolabr · 1 pointr/battlestations

I also live in a dorm and have a bunk bed in my room with a desk underneath it. I drilled two holes through my case that are about the circumference of a nickel. I looped a bike lock around the bunk post and through the holes in the tower. It may not be completely impossible to steal but it prevents someone from walking off with it.

I also put a kensington lock on my laptop using the same method with the bed post.

Just make sure you and your roommate keep the door locked at all times and you should be fine.

Get yourself a solid bike multi-tool such as this one, and a portable tire pump. Those will take care of 99% of things that'll happen on your average commute.

It wouldn't hurt to have some spare tubes, but the last time I tried changing a tire on my bike, it snowballed into an $80 repair for a new chain and derailleur, so I've vowed not to do that again.

u/Carlin225 · 1 pointr/flashlight

I wouldn’t worry too much about the light coming with a bike mount, you can always get one separately. I have an OLight universal mount that works pretty well. Though I use it for my dog leash and strapped in a Wizard.

And now that I’m talking about it I realize Armytek makes a bike mount of their own, and the Wizard is on sale. The price is roughly in your budget after currency conversion, and they do ship worldwide.

I’m not sure if it’s the best choice as a specifically bike mounted light. But if you want a right angle, it’s hard to go wrong with a Wizard.

I'm late to the party. I think it's really cool that you're making this work. If you'll be commuting at night please get rear and front lights as soon as possible. This is what I use and it's great. Ten miles is totally doable as a daily commute.

Some things that have helped me:

Doing meal prep on the weekends so that I can carry my whole week's lunches to work on Monday. That way I don't have to worry about making and taking a lunch every morning. It also means I don't have to wear a backpack every day.

Taking all my work clothes for the week on Monday for the same reason.

Leaving protein powder at work. When I was first getting started, the difference it made in my soreness and ability to make it to lunchtime without being starving was huge. Just mix a shake as soon as you get in.

Get fenders whenever as soon as you can. I don't know what sort of climate you live in, but once the temp starts dropping if you don't have fenders even just a little water on the road can make for a really miserable ride.

One of the reviews says that if you get hit by a car, they did it on purpose. And I would say that's accurate.

The headlight not only let's people see you, but it actually lights up the road ahead of you.

Almost looks like this.

Computer (Garmin Edge 500 Red Black Bundle)-
There is a newer model (510) and another level up (810) but I chose this for the simplicity and all weather visiblity. I read some reviews that said the 510's color screen was worthless in sunlight. Plus I got a good deal on it. The price has seemed to go up. The entire package came with pc, mount, HR monitor, cadence/wheel monitor.

Underseat Bag (Black Silkworm reflective trim seat / saddle bag for cycling)-
I like it, but wish it was slightly bigger. That said, I have a set of tire levers, emergency tool kit, patch kit, spare tube, and can fit my phone in it if needed (galaxy nexus).

Frame pump (Topeak Pocket Rocket Master Blaster Bike Pump)-
I'm wishing i had gone for a model with a pressure gauge in it or gone for a CO2 kit, while it works well, it is a pain to pump up a tire to full pressure.

I also use lights during the daytime as well. The Cygolite Hotshot, mentioned in this thread already, got it in this combo

I got a cheap Headlight from Amazon that comes with a rechargeable battery and comes with straps to use as a head lamp.

I do the same thing at parks and forest roads. I don't have the budget, or want for hard locking panniers, so I just lock my gear to the bike.

I bring a small bike U lock that comes with a cable lock. The cable I put through everything I can, helmet, jacket arm, pant leg and loops on my soft panniers (I just stash my boots on the other side of the bike). The U-lock I put through the wheel to secure the bike. This is the one I use, but you can probably get a cheaper one

Lights are probably the thing you would be most likely to forget. You don't think you need them because you're riding home at 5 pm every day and then bam, you stay an hour late and its dusk, or its foggy outside, or winter is coming and the days get noticeably shorter. Get lights now before you really need them.
Also a helmet and a lock. You could also get a mirror for when you are first starting (this one really helped me feel safer when I first started)

I use the Kryptonite New York Noose 1275 to lock up my Juiced CrossCurrent S. The lock is quite heavy but manageable. And it is a bit on the short side but long enough to get the job done. I also got the Kryptonite Anti-Theft Protection Offer. It cost $25 for 5 years of bike theft insurance.

I also got the GPS option when I bought the bike. It’s not super accurate but is generally good enough so that I’ll get a warning if the bike moves out of the geofence and can give a rough idea on where the bike is located

While writing this it just dawned on me that I have not received the geofence alert in a very long time. I checked and found that the GPS has not updated its location in months!! I need to figure out what is going on. I see some posts out there that the Trackimo devices were based on 2G mobile equipment which the carriers have apparently turned off. And it seems Juiced may be helping folks with that. I’m very glad you posted or I could have found myself in a position where the bike was stolen and the GPS didn’t work. Assuming the 2G thing is correct, I’m a bit disappointed that Juiced did not notify me.

I still need to grab a real mount; I've just been using a few velcro straps. I've been looking at one of these two though.

Beefier

Sleeker

Also worth noting, the EC23 will only do 1000 lumens for roughly 1.5 hrs (I realized I had the wrong value above) and is not USB rechargeable. A USB rechargeable option would be the Thrunite Neutron 2C V3 (50 dollars with battery).

Don't forget a pocket tire pump for after you field repair your tube!

u/barackstar · 11 pointsr/onewheel

at the store, just put it in your shopping cart.

if it will be out of your sight for any length of time, the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit has been recommended here.

if you only need to prevent a regular pick-up-and-walk-off theft, a regular cable bike lock should be enough -- but anyone with a little time or tools can get through those rather quickly.

u/Richard_Berg · 1 pointr/ebikes

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009R96YK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Plenty stable if you have the right tools to re-tighten it periodically. It makes the bike annoyingly wide, tricky to maneuver thru doors and such, but that's life.

u/neepins · 4 pointsr/sanfrancisco

If you want to be a hipster and spend $230 on mediocre lights you lock outside get those. Ootherwise just get some normal LED bike lights:. Having a 4" strip of road illuminated in front of me is not what I call 'useful'

u/theinfamousj · 1 pointr/ElectricScooters

I have this one because (1) it stays where you set it once you crank your bolts down tight, (2) it fits into the end of my handle bars. and (3) my local bicycle shop had it for sale on the rack.

u/sentry07 · 1 pointr/bicycling

Got this less than a month ago. So far, I've put a new Riva saddle on it, Profile Design end bars, a Mirrycle bar mirror, a rear spider flasher, and a Bell F20 computer.

u/amateur-dentist · 3 pointsr/lockpicking

Go to a bike store, I think all keyed Kryptonite bike locks are disc detainers.

edit: I believe this is their base model for under 25 bucks

second edit: here's a cheaper off brand one for under 15 bucks.

u/taonzen · 1 pointr/bicycling

I bought an inexpensive Topeak Pocket Rocket. It comes with a plastic thingie that lets you attach it underneath your bottle cage, so you don't take up all of your lugs.

u/chefkocher1 · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

That's a foldable lock. I have a very similar setup but my pump is silver.

Edit:that's the one with the bottle cage mount I use:
