TL;DR: Gave our kids license over their money within certain boundaries while they are young so they could fuck up their finances with cheap stuff and learn their lessons early on.

Not sure if this is what you are getting at or not, but here's what we are doing with our kids. They have a typical kid allowance/chore system. Doing daily chores nets them $.25/chore. Simple stuff like dishes, trash, clean your room, etc. We have "bonus" chores which pay significantly more for irregular tasks. Clean the toilet in the kids bathroom? $1.00 payout. Mow the lawn - $2.00 (it's a smallish lawn and a riding tractor which they love to drive, it's not even a chore really). These aren't astronomical pay-outs because these are very regular sorts of chores. It's not the amount they earn, it's more about the frequency and revenue potential of doing chores regularly and building a maintainable revenue stream. What is their incentive?

Like many FI'ers we're not lavish with our gifts on birthdays or Christmas. We try to get them ONE very nice gift and a sundry of other stuff they need like socks/underwear/shoes/clothes/book bag/etc. The incentive of the chores is that with some small stipulations, they get to do whatever the hell they want with the spending money. Mom and Dad won't buy you x but with your own money you can go get x if you want. You want a new game for your Nintendo DS? You are stuck hoping on it for your b-day or Christmas. Want it sooner? How much spending $ do you have? Might need to do some more chores to save up if they don't have enough.

Now this sounds like I'm reinforcing the consumerist, hedonistic adaptation we are all surrounded by. Here's the difference: Pay-out of their allowance has rules around it. We "pay" them a lump sum each month, but they have to divide it up and record it into a ledger as follows: 10% is "give" money, the remainder is divided into 1/3rds thusly: 1/3 save, 1/3 spend, 1/3 invest. That means if they are $2.00 away from being able to afford x they can't just mow the lawn to get across the goal line. They need to do a variety of chores to account for the splits above to give them $2.00 afterwards.

We gave them typical kid savings banks (note: I do not sell or earn any endorsements for this product, your mileage may vary, etc) to put their money in and every couple of months we go to the bank and deposit their earnings into their own savings account. They do the math and divide up the funds on their own. They fill out the deposit slips and count their own money out at the bank. They have a savings register which shows them the interest they have earned since the last deposit which I make an effort to point out to them each time we go.

spend money literally has no rules. They can spend it all on chewing gum if they want. Mom and Dad have no fucks to give for what they spend it on. Initially, that's exactly what they did with it. Now that they've been using the system for a few months they "get" the idea that if they want x and they don't have the $ today, that means they have to do more chores and save up by not spending their spend money on chewing gum.

Invest Money goes straight into their savings account. The only technical difference is in addition to going into a separate ledger, they can withdraw and invest it however they want. The older one lent some money to his younger brother to run a lemonade stand once which payed out nicely for him. Otherwise it collects interest until he gets an idea about how to use it next. I'll freely admit we need to be more active in this area with the kids. Sadly there aren't a ton of investments available out there for small amounts and young kids.

Save Money This is exactly as it sounds. Sits in their savings account and collects minimal interest.

Give Money Usually goes to church and gets dropped in the plate when it comes around although they've occasionally had fund raisers at school which they've chosen to participate in from time to time instead. We don't govern this much either. Whatever makes their hearts glad for being able to help people in need is the primary directive for these funds.

It's been instrumental in helping our kids understand, at an early age, some very basic concepts about how to manage their money and make wise decisions with their time. Eventually they will want bigger ticket items like a car, etc. where they will have savings they've socked away since they were very young to pour into those desires and I hope they will realize how all that effort over years brought them to a place where they could afford the opportunity to purchase, protect, and maintain that asset. Will they be FI at 22 years old? Probably not. But they might think twice about how they spend their paycheck on the weekends and that's about as much as we hope for. I expect they will make a bunch of mistakes along the way but I'd rather they do it with chewing gum than with a gas guzzling truck to drive to school because "all the other boys have one".

While I can't buy you a sex toy, I can give you advice on making one that's just as good as the several that I've used.

Alright, so grab a pen, you're all going to need to take notes. First things first, you need to find a bottle with a wide enough mouth and a deep enough well for your member. Keep in mind, you don't want it tight, but you don't want it loose, so you should be able to fit atleat the tip of your pinky in with your dick. My advice is this good size, good shape, a little unwieldy but otherwise perfect.

Step 2, your going to need some of these! About a tablespoon into a shallow pan to start growing. While that's happening, clean up the bottle and fill it to the brim with water, this part is best to do in the shower because it will get messy, and stuff your whole stick right in there. This will displace a good deal of water, what remains is a rough estimate of where to fill your bottle. Take note of this and empty the remaining water. Now, using either a drill or a hot piece of metal, punch a hole in the bottem end of the side. Not directly in the bottom, it's a thicker plastic than the side. Be sure to clean up the hole, you don't want any sharp barbs in there.

Step 3, play with the orbies. They're fun, they feel cool, and it's neat to see them bounce and squish. Get a feel for them, some batches absorb faster or get softer and are more likely to burst. Vet those out, you want solid, Semifirm, beads that are about the size of marbles. Now orbies come in various sizes, the link provided is the average size, about 1cm diameter. I've also tried larger 2.5 cm diameter, they're interesting but they burst easier and seem to leave more free space which leads to a looser feeling. It's best to keep them between 8mm and 1.5cm.

Now that you've vetted out the chafe of your jelly crop, go ahead and fill the bottle to about the level the water was at during step 2. You can refine the fit a little by adding or subtracting a few here or there. If it's not doing it for you, add a few more, if you're feeling them burst or getting a fine slurry on your pubes, take a few out. Once you've got the perfect fit, find a Tupperware that will hold that many and keep them together.

Consultations! You've diyed a high quality, disguised fleshlight!

Now for some basic tips.

Clean your orbies after each use, they're naturally kind of anti bacterial but it's good to be hygenic. Just pour them out into the Tupperware, give them a toss with clean, running water, and drain them. Wash the bottle as well.

Between uses, store them in the Tupperware. They won't dry out like they will with the hole in the bottle and if they're found you can just say you play with them. You can even store the orbies and bottle separately for increased privacy.

The hole in the bottle is to prevent a vacuum from trapping your dick. You can cover and release it for varying levels of suction.

The reason for this bottle specifically is that the flanged top keeps the beads in while giving you ample interior room for compression. This bottle specifically isn't required but one of this style is.

The orbies rupturing isn't really a hazard, it's just inconvenient. It decreases the effective volume, makes a big mess, and can clog your sink when you wash them.

Replace the orbies every few uses or any time they begin to smell funny.

Enjoy.

Juggling

> and how/when did you discover it? story replies only

I estimate I was around 11 years old or so when I started juggling. I'm not sure of my exact motivations at the time however. There was no birthday party with a juggler or some random street performer, or that classic Klutz juggling book or whatever. There just happened to be a bunch of tennis balls laying around the house and I taught myself (inefficiently and with great difficulty) "backwards". First the "shower" pattern, then I discovered the "half shower", and eventually the "cascade". I recommend the exact opposite progression, by the way - and tennis balls are awful, they're too light and bouncy. It took me over three months of daily practice (> 1 or 2 hrs / day) to achieve even the most basic results. Had I been trained more effectively I could have likely learned it in all in a week or less.

Anyway. So I showed my friends at school my new moves, they asked if I could do under-the-arm or behind-the-back moves, and I went home and learned them and started playing around with a bunch of different 3 ball juggling variations.

A few years later our school gets the internet (yeah, I'm old) and the very first website I head over to is the juggling information service (which still exists). It's there that I see my first juggling gifs and realize that it is actually, physically possible to juggle more than 3 objects! I went home and taught myself 3, 4, and 5, eventually (after a few years) getting up to 7.

Then someone shows me this magazine article about a guy named Michael Moschen (the hands of David Bowie in The Labyrinth during the crystal ball scenes). I begged and pleaded to get an acrylic (solid clear ball that looks like glass but is a little lighter and far more indestructible). I get one and start learning that.

College happens, I start juggling clubs (they look like bowling pins). I meet other jugglers for the first time in my life, share moves and talk about new ways to view juggling patterns, I learn to pass (throwing clubs back and forth between two or more people). Grad school happens, work happens, my career happens, through it all I continue to juggle, perform, give talks and workshops, go to festivals and conventions, meet new people, etc.

I still juggle to this day, and I love it.

As an 11 year old boy I had no intention whatsoever that I would still be doing it all these years later. It's a way for me to relax and unwind. It's a way for me to keep fit, and there's always something new and interesting for me to work on. Example- here's a short 3 club sequence I've been working on. Jugglers are pretty nifty people, when I'm at a festival or convention, I feel like I'm always around positive people who push me to my limits and leave me wanting to develop some new aspect of my juggling repertoire. I sincerely hope I am able to continue juggling as long as I live.

Welcome to /r/Anxiety! It's a great place!

I used to do the same constantly, anything that caused minimal agitation, just enough to pull me back into reality or distract me. Bite my cuticles, tear my nails, scratch myself too hard, I even had a horrible (and really strange) habit of biting my taste buds off (not too proud, can't explain it).

It's really hard to break the habit, but it can be done. You just need to replace it with another tactile sensation. Many people like these, otherwise try and replace it with something that isn't destructive. Maybe get one of those grip strengtheners, crack your knuckles, do yoga or exercise when you're feeling antsy, drink calming tea. You gotta find that thing that clicks for you

Edit: just realized I bit my nail off while writing this. I've been pretty on edge today, seems like I need to follow some of my own advice. None of us are perfect lol

I'm pretty sure they (read Sony) patched out any backwards compatibility in the old PS3s a few years ago so that's a poor way to go. Good news is NTSC PS2s CAN play games from other regions using a modchip (which is difficult to set up) OR, and I recommend this method, a 'magicswap'. Basically, it's a disc that comes with a tool to open the drive after the game has booted but without resetting the console. The disc is labeled an NTSC and once you take it out and put a different region's disc in the software on the first disk boots the game you want. The PS2 doesn't check region after the initial boot so it works perfectly from what I remember. This was popular back in the day so people in the USA could play Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts since they were only released in Japan. I'll edit a link in for the thing soon.

Edit: This is the disk thing. Not sure if they have a PAL version though so keep that in mind. It costs $35 and if you plan on using a 1st generation PS2 (the fat one that has a motorized disk tray) you'll need to get an opener tool which is only $4. One thing I forgot is that this also removes security checks so you can play backups using this too. (Possibly even load off a hard drive/USB but I'm not sure on that)

This, and more of this.
Exercise - intense cardio mostly, for more than 40 minutes - is a game changer.
So are meds, meditation, etc... but exercise has a more "whole" effect of on mental power, tranquility, and confidence in your abilities.

And in the moment :

  • this is the best. I've tried many fiddler toys and this one strikes the sweet spot between convenience (small, silent...) and focus/anxiety improvement.

  • othe tips : embrace your hyperactivity/craving for stimulation, and live it out. Stand up and move around, modulate your voice, increase rates of exchange. Make it a conversation that you like to have and pay attention to!

Your choices aren't too great on amazon, since we're pretty niche.

I would get a

velocity

N12
http://www.amazon.com/MAGICYOYO-SHARK-HONOR-String-Trick/dp/B00LHIFKYU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1456867685&sr=8-2&keywords=N12+yoyo

Butterfly XT
http://www.amazon.com/Duncan-Butterfly-Colors-may-vary/dp/B00BWJK0KS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456867715&sr=8-1&keywords=butterfly+yoyo

The velocity if you want something that can be responsive or unresponsive, but sacrifices some usability(High walls, meh weight distribution). The N12 if you want something unresponsive and actually pretty good (but you'll need to learn to bind immediately). The Butterfly if you want a cheap responsive yoyo to learn the ropes on before buying something better somewhere other than amazon later. TBH Butterfly XT + N12 is basically what I got when I started... and I'm doing fine.

If they get an allowance, try using piggy banks that divide up spending vs. saving vs. donating to charity (such as this one or this one) and discuss with them how they want to split their money.

Lemonade stands are a great way to learn about money -- how much you need to invest up front for supplies (although for younger kids this can just be a "donation" from Mom and Dad), how to price your product so people will buy it, keeping track of your earnings, etc. You can also encourage them to donate half or all of the proceeds to a charity, to support a cause they care about -- I remember having lemonade stands for a local animal shelter as a kid and feeling so proud when I got to go deliver our donation.

Depending on their ages, you might also check out some simple financial literacy books and stories that involve saving money. For younger kids, Needs and Wants or Lily Learns about Wants and Needs look good; for elementary-age kids try Do I Need It or Do I Want It?: Making Budget Choices; and for upper elementary to middle school kids there's The Everything Kids' Money Book. In terms of stories that involve money, check out Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday and The Berenstain Bears' Trouble with Money.

It's way, way under $50 (like, $15-18 at most) but the MagicYoyo V4 is what I started learning 5A on. I'm a complete beginner with that style so I can't really comment on which yoyos work best for it, but at that price, you can utterly destroy it without a care. Or even get two and try 3A. I can say it plays very well, especially for the price, and the shape is very comfortable to catch and throw for both 1A and 5A.

Other than that, there is the YYF/YoYoTricks Canon which includes that really nice machined delrin counterweight. I don't own one, so I can't tell you how it plays, but I like the design, I like Jake Elliot's style, and it's right in your price range at $45.

I like to write about what makes me happy, I'm a very very anxious person too, especially in cars or around new people, so writing down good solid things helps me a bit.

And something relaxing on Amazon?

  1. This would be for me and someone else. I love to read, but lately RAoA is as far as I get. I was just looking at this book last night thinking I would probably enjoy it immensely. Then it would go to my lovely SO, who reads to escape chronic pain and is always hungering for more. This would be different from her usual fare, in a delightfully enjoyable way. Then there is our daughter...

  2. Veddy interesting.

I recently went through a similar situation. I decided I wanted to try clubs about a month ago. after doing very little reading I bought a set of these and I almost immediately regretted it. After reading about the green club project I think it would have been a better idea to just make a set of these to play with until I was sure I liked clubs. I made do with the one piece clubs for about a week before giving in and ordering a set of Play px3 Sirius clubs with wrapped handles. My hand are extremely grateful. I only wish I hadn't wasted money on the cheap clubs first.

u/Kyodai1030 · 2 pointsr/Throwers

This is my #1 recommendation for your price range.

It's unresponsive, meaning it won't return to your hand if you tug on the string, but will return if you learn a simple thing called a "bind", which is really easy, and addictive all by itself.

I have one of these, and it's absolutely stunning in performance for price. I have quite a few high-end yoyos and this thing will hang with the best of them in many of the most important ways.

u/shixuun · 1 pointr/ADHD

You can try a fidget cube. It is small and each side of it has a different feature on it, like buttons, a switch, and a wheel. However, if you're in a meeting, the buttons can be noisy so I would test it out first to see if it would distract others. A good old fashioned pen could help too, or other basic office items since they are pretty commonplace and wouldn't be distracting nor make others think it is out of place in a meeting.

Another thing that I often do in meetings to occupy my hands is take notes. You can do this with a notebook or a computer, depending on what is allowed. It could help you remember important points from the meeting too to have it written down. What I also do is write whatever I'm thinking down so I get wily thoughts that are distracting me out of my head so I can pay better attention. Just a little trick I picked up.

Here is a link to a pretty good and cheap fidget cube: https://www.amazon.com/Helect-Fidget-Relieves-Stress-Anxiety/dp/B075K6V37H/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1538938902&sr=8-3&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=fidget+cube&dpPl=1&dpID=41t2lnMMLoL&ref=plSrch

u/supertoned · 2 pointsr/poi

I am using these rainbow poi (they are sort of the 'cheapie' model, you can choose between an RGB strobe or the rainbow fade when you order the. I prefer these to the multifunction poi, as they are sturdier and less likely to malfunction. Plus, I just like the rainbow fade) with these chain tethers. While there are more expensive chains availble, these are the best I have ever used, and I highly recommend them. IF you want to go chains, of course. Orbitals are sort of tough with chains, but I like to practice exclusively with chains as I am practicing to spin fire, and you know. Chains.

The only thing about these poi is that they are fairly heavy, and the material, while yielding, can still give you a really good whack.

My girlfriend uses these poi when she spins, and they are really nice and soft, can take even more of a beating than mine, but are a little light. They also have the benefit of being able to strobe, fade, or pause at a single colour all in a VERY sturdy package. I prefer a heavier poi myself, as I feel it helps you play around with the inertia, but your mileage may vary depending on what you are looking for.

You should buy this miniature panda! You should buy it because that way yo will be able to hold a panda on the palm of your hand whenever you feel like it. It should help you feel better every single time you hold it because pandas are awesome and you seem to like them!

At home, she's a big fan of foam rolling. This is a great video on it.

When she travels she usually carries a pinky ball. She'll just put that between her back and a wall, and lean up against the wall to give herself a massage. She'll do that on road trips too in the car. Lacrosse balls and tennis balls are good too, but tennis balls are a little soft and lacrosse are a little hard.

Neither of those are as good as full on massage for her, but they tide her over in between sessions. Good luck!

I'm sure you'll be fine, but if you really want to be a hero, bring this thing:

Tons of fighters' measurements vary both throughout their career and depending on who you listen to or read.

Add to that the way reach is measured, and you have a bit of a clusterfuck.

Ever seen one of those clock-in machines at a workplace which measures the (relatively) precise, unique length of your fingers and the distance between them? Hell, if that can be done, I don't see why it could be unfeasible to have a guy stand in a doorway of sort with his arms outstretched and the door frame closing in on him to measure the length of his reach and arms... I know something like this might sound oldschool, but I'd go out on a limb and assume that the UFC wouldn't want to pay for video-game-esque body scanners or whatever.

Side Note: I'm sure somebody would be interested in buying a 3D-printed, lifesize statue of each fighter or whatever, but that's kind of neither here nor there.

But yeah... Measure the fucking reach. 😂😂

A pair of Pod Poi can be a bit expensive ($134.95), but are the standard work-horse that most serious poi spinners get once they know they're going to keep spinning and need a solid toy. They come with a lifetime warranty like all FlowToys products.

For a more introductory set, you could try Spinballs - only like $25, but still soft, still light up, and give you an idea of whether or not the kid will be interested in continuing.

I've met the owners of both companies and in both cases they are heavily involved in the flow community, attend/participate/volunteer with flow events, and are just really nice people.

u/ColeSloth · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Not even kevlar. I have a bunch of the stuff actually. You can pick it up in most places that sale magicians stuff. Usually comes as a long piece of what looks like a thicker piece of cotton thread and you separate your own piece of thin fiber from the thicker part, so that one string has like 50 super thin pieces you can use. It's a bit elastic.

Tie one end to your back belt loop and drape it right over your head in front of you and you can make the stuff float in pretty neat looking ways.

u/TheySeeMeLearnin · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I have a ton of these and should probably start a website. Here are a few that relate to back/neck/joint issues:

  1. For overnight back relief from strain/tightness, sleep on a heating pad set to the lowest setting (my Sunbeam has a "Warm" setting). Sleep on your back and put a pillow under your hamstrings as close to your butt as possible and sleep on your back. Most people have trouble sleeping on their backs, but with a few adjustments you can get an amazing night's sleep.

  2. Get two of these, spread them about 2 inches apart, and lie down on top of them positioned under the top of your back. Bridge your torso by lifting your hips and pushing down on top of these and hold for 15 seconds or more. Drop your hips, roll back so they travel 1-2 inches down your back and pop your hips up again. Keep doing this the entire length of your back. When they reach your glutes, spread them a little further and twist one leg at a time so your legs are perpendicular. This is by far THE best way I have ever found to seriously release back tension. When you reach between the shoulder blades, you can feel a huge difference when taking a deep breath.

  3. Splash cold water on your face to wake up in the morning. Run the tender part of your forearms under cold water (from a hose/sink/whatever) if you're feeling too hot; the skin on your forearms is so thin your body gets cooled incredibly quickly. Take a cold shower after a rough workout to ease inflammation and prevent achy joints. Hell, take a cold shower all the time because it's refreshing as hell, great for your skin, and great for your hair. You may hate every second of suffering under there, but once you get out and get ready you'll feel a whole lot better than you do climbing out of a hot shower.

    That's all I've got time for, work-work.

The book Juggling for the Complete Klutz is a great introduction. Also, practicing in public is a surprising social catalyst. Many people will walk up to you and talk about how they used to juggle; some will still remember how and be more than happy to give pointers or join you.

I found out about this patch a few weeks ago, it works great. You just need the game ISO and then just patch it and play.

to play a patched ISO on your PS2 or PS2 slim you'll need a swap magic disk.

Well this sounds like torture.

It sounds nuts but could you potentially listen to music or podcasts really quietly on 1 earbud? I walk around the lab all day with 1 earbud in. It really helps to have some kind of stimulation, but I also need to be able to hear people talking to me.

Your teachers might draw the line at that, though.

u/warboy · 1 pointr/drums

If you want the throne in there then you need to use a cheap POS throne. Otherwise it will not fit.

You can try something like a bass drum anchor. Most of the rocking I had went away when I used a solid footplate.

The second option requires you to take an existing beater shaft and pull the actual beater off of it and install one of those guys. It is by and large the traditional beater for a suitcase set and if all you want is bass and not attack they work fine. I was less than thrilled and that beater now sits on my ekit.

u/DarthGoose · 3 pointsr/juggling

Broadly, you have two options:

One piece clubs are cheaper and a good starting point if you aren't sure if you are going to stick with it for a while. You can get a set of three for around $20 here or here

The other option is to spend a bit more an get multi-piece clubs. They have a much softer feel on the catch because they are made with a dowel rod in the center, around which is a plastic/tape handle which has some give to it. You can expect to pay $15-20 per club for a set of these. link If you decide to go this route, there are a lot of manufacturers and everyone has different preferences. Beard, Dube, Renegade, and Henry are some well regarded club makers.

The third, dirt cheap option is to make a set out of newspaper like this.
I learned on a set of these and upgraded to some multi-piece clubs once I was sure it would be worth the money for me.

I personally didn't buy them for focusing but for my compulsive nail ripping and leg movement. They have actually worked for that and I have nice nails for the first time in years. I also have a chain fidget toy that uses bike chains and a key chain that is much more subtle for studying than the spinners. I don't have trouble focusing but the spinners for me are definitely distracting when studying so that's when I pull the chain thingy. Overall the chain fidget toy is much better for fidgeting and focusing than the spinners, IMO.

The Exodus will be fine to teach you how to throw. Once you can do all that stuff and want to do string tricks, look in to an unresponsive yo-yo. If you can do the fundamentals on an Exodus, you'll be able to figure out how to bind with some practice. Work through the tricks on YoyoTricks.com or YoyoExpert.com

As far as going unresponsive, I really like the YoyoFactory ReplayPro or the MagicYoyo Skyva. I think they're head and shoulders better than the First Base. You could also look into the other metal magic yo-yos. The new AmeToys one is phenominal.

Actually what's more likely and easy is that the cameraman is using invisible thread that's stuck to the 8 ball with a tiny bit of wax. Invisible thread is what magicians use to levitate things. The camera shakes because it's the cameraman who pulls the thread, causing the 8 ball to roll towards him.

u/Fast_Biscotti · 5 pointsr/BetterEveryLoop

It's this stuff. Attach one end to yourself (in my day, I used a fake pager that contained a spool of the thread), and the other end to some object using magician's wax. Looks to me like he might have two lines going for the napkin to be so steady. Probably has one end fed through a shirt button hole, and the other stuck on a chair at the other end of the table. Some really fun wizardry can happen if you're wearing black, or if the background is black. People can get right up close to the effect, and never see the thread. It's really that thin.
