or if you are trying to keep it more simple, these would probably work just fine too. i had the z623's (just older version of these) for a long time and they actually sound pretty damn good for their size and price. plus you get the little sub, while it isnt going to impress all that much it helps add a little bass to the smaller speakers. should get plenty loud if needed though, and sound pretty good doing so.

Do you have a car? You could amplify with the car's speakers. If there's no audio jack in the car, they sell little fm transmitters. You could keep a laptop charged for ableton with power from the cigarette lighter, using a power inverter (like $20). Might want to keep the car engine running (but only outdoors and with lots of room for ventilation) so the car battery doesn't die on you. You could even set up on the roof of the (stationary) car, or in the bed, if it's a pickup. Why? Because, your punk as f*ck, that's why.

Things like the raspberry pi, wiimotes and gaming controllers could also make you a little more portable if you're not wedded to the push. A single wiimote, sending just bluetooth to your computer is equivalent - by my quick count - to a midi controller with 4 knobs (x,y,z,acceleration) and roughly a dozen buttons. Add infrared and that's a few more knobs. Then, in osculator and/or ableton, you can increase those figures exponentially by mapping events to button combinations. (E.g., the A and B buttons are each mapped to unique midi messages like c1 and c#1, while pressing A and B buttons at the same time is mapped to something different like f#2).

Any set is going to be a lot more portable if you're not responsible for your own amplification, or if the location of speakers is flexible. I haven't quite figured out whether this last one is viable yet, but it SEEMS like the Chromecast could be a budget option for wireless audio. If that were the case, you could brusk anywhere there's a tv. There are tutorials online re: using the Chromecast as a wireless hi-fi with the aid of hdmi audio splitter cables, or something.

In a similar vein, a raspberry pi with a WiFi or Bluetooth dongle running pd-extended or something would be laptop-ish. It couldn't any handle heavy lifting like ableton, but it could be useful as an audio or midi interface, or for getting bigger equipment like amps off site. I've actually been toying with this last one a little. I'm going to use the pi as a headless, wireless relay for data from bend sensors and ultrasonic sensors weaved into my clothes, and run through arduinos so they can act as mid I controllers inside ableton, but so I can still dance around, untetheredA term of art for productive googling with that kind of idea is "wearables" or "e-textiles". Make magazine has a few features on the concept.

For getting audio (e.g, from a guitar) into the pi, or iOS devices, I'm using a uca-222. It's tiny, cheap and USB powered.

For wireless/portable midi or osc, don't overlook your phone, either. A lot of iOS apps can send midi and/or osc messages if you set up your laptop to broadcast an ad hoc network. An app called "Lemur" lets you do all kinds of midi/osc stuff. People post tons of templates for controlling ableton, Max for live, and even specific 3rd party plugins, all from an iOS device. You can also just put together your own custom interface. Touch OSC and Mr Mr also do this kind of thing. The ad hoc network thing was kind of a nightmarish process the first time I tried to figure it out, and with the lag it's probably not suited to actual, virtuosic finger drumming. An app called Apollo midi over Bluetooth (assuming you have Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), has worked a lot better for me with less lag and fewer dropped handshakes (which will be an issue if you do this in public, where the spectator's own phones are competing for your radio bandwidth.) Apollo is "musical" enough that with a slow song, at least, you could use it for notes. Try midimorphosis through Apollo (the "audiobus"" app is useful, but not necessary for this) into ableton. You can then sing into your phone, for example, with real-time midi accompaniment. Again, you're not going to wow anyone with your blistering voice controlled guitar solo, but it's passable for pads or chords. And anyway, there's no such thing as late notes in ableton...

I'm not really heeding any of my own advice. I'm trying to prepare a busking too, and I want it to be portable, but I can't bring myself to exclude the push. Right now I'm just using rolling modular wire shelving to support everything. The wheels have brakes, but it's too lightweight and it shakes when I press the push, which is a non-starter.

There are little tables made specifically for supporting the push or the apc40. You've seen them. They look a little like music notation stands. Very portable. Or if you want to go the opposite direction, or just make a statement, you could use a lectern. I used a wooden one as a makeshift standing desk for a while. It was cheap. Any university surplus store should sell them.

There are tons of ways you can economize for live performance just within the push itself. You probably went with push for that exact reason. But just like with ableton, don't put the horse before the cart. Make sure you know all of its features inside out. If there's something tricky you want to try, always first ask yourself whether it's built into push or ableton. It's heartbreaking to feel like you've just discovered fire, only to realize fire is a basic feature. It feels downright unbecoming of an artist to "read the manual," I know, but make an exception for this one thing.

With that said, here's two dirty tricks for live performance: Map velocity and after touch. There are a couple aftertouch M4L devices out there. Map either of these to, well, anything, for instant awesome. For instance: if you're playing the notes of a melodic solo instrument on push's pads: map the velocity (how hard you hit the pads) to the sync rate on an arpeggioator or beat repeat. Map aftertouch (how hard you press the pad after initially pressing) to something like an lfo rate. After touch in particular is fun if people are up close. Technically if you had it mapped to pitch, you could play -like actually play - the melody of an entire song with a single finger, theremin-style. But the fact that that's actually happening would just be lost on everyone if you were on stage.

Finally, if you're playing right next to people, instead of on a stage, consider implementing an interactive aspect. Motionmod or faceosc on a laptop pointed towards the audience would pay easy wow-factor dividends. And there are a few tutorials around re: mobile midi-triggering dance floors.

I don't think solar is a great idea. The Goal Zero Sherpa kits don't have very big battery capacities and I highly doubt you would reliably get enough input from the solar cells to keep up with the drain of laptop/controller/speaker. They're really aimed at a "keep the panels open all day long to recharge the battery, then charge phone/laptop from that" use-case. I doubt it can charge the battery pack anywhere near as quickly as you would drain it, so it's not going to be an endless supply. (The "100" kit gives 20W max of power out of the solar cells. I'm certain your laptop PSU wants to put out more than that.)

Options might be a 12v deep cycle marine battery, charger and inverter (to give you AC mains you plug laptop charger in to), or possibly a big Lithium battery pack with a laptop-out port as well as the regular USB supply. Something like the PowerGorilla.

The "big marine battery" solution is likely to end up cheaper, bigger, MUCH heavier, but possibly also with far greater run-time potential. The dedicated laptop-specific-battery-pack route will cost more but be easier to manage. Both routes are far cheaper than either Goal Zero Sherpa kit.

The Goal Zero Yeti 150 is described as a "solar generator" but you can charge it from regular AC mains and then use it as a convenient Massive Battery with an AC Outlet - you should get 1x-2x extra laptop runtime out of it. The Yeti 400 is essentially the same but with a MUCH bigger battery (much more expensive, much HEAVIER at about 15kg) and should give 3x-5x extra laptop time. These products are a more convenient, but more expensive, way to take the "lead-acid battery and inverter" route - they are basically those things rolled up in to a user-friendly package. If you could stretch your budget to the Sherpa 100 solar, then the Yeti 400 battery (at the same price) is a MUCH better fit for your needs. (But note you could DIY something roughly equivalent for cheaper - and I'm sure there are competing products in that area, so do shop around for similar things if you'd prefer the all-in-one convenience with a battery meter and less fiddling.)

On speakers, the Anker SoundCore XL has very good bass for a little portable thing and should give a few hours of play time before needing to charge it, and you can power it from USB (so it could be constant-powered by your chosen extra-power solution). It's excellent for the price, in my opinion. It's got an aux-in, and you could always double up to two of them if you needed more output power.

Higher-end than that, MiniRigs do great portable speakers and they even do a dedicated sub, but they are NOT cheap.

Head to best buy and get a feel for them, maybe that will help?

I personally love my Anker Sports, but it might be too heavy for you at 821g... It's pretty much invincible, lasts for about 16 hours and is VERY crisp directional which is great for shared camping. $80. I beat the shit out of this thing :)

Thought technically I AM on my second purchase but that's only because I left it on the roof of my van and drove 600km, it was cheaper to buy again than pay 1200km of petrol....

There are a few decent active speakers in your price range, but not many with an optical input. So far for $200 and under I have only found the Edifier R1850DB. This is a great starting set of speakers. You can find them here:

Most active speakers in this price range will have RCA inputs instead and a lot of TV's will have RCA outputs to connect to them. If you have the option of connecting through RCA, other great options include the Edifier R1700BT and the Fluance Ai40. If you can spend over $200, some other good options would be the Edifier R2000DB for $250, the Audioengine A2+ for $250, the Kanto YU4 for $330, the Vanatoo Transparent Zero for $360(best on this list, IMO), the Kanto YU6 for $400, or the Audioengine A5+ for 400.

If you want to get a record player down the road, it is important to know whether or not you will want a turntable that has a phono preamp built in(this will limit your selection greatly) or if you want a turntable that requires and external phono preamp(this is most turntables and you will need an amp or receiver that has a phono preamp included). The reason I say this is because the Kanto YU4 and YU6 listed above already has a phono preamp built in, so that's one less thing you need to get down the road. The other speakers do not have this.

While what /u/metril is saying probably has some merit in the home theater department, he is just parroting the same shit you will hear on Reddit anytime someone mentions Bose.

I have demoed most of the bluetooth speakers that have hit the market in the past year or two, and the soundlink mini blows away the competition. It is pricey at $200, but there is nothing that beats its sound quality for a portable bluetooth speaker that is cheaper or the same price.

That being said, I don't know if the soundlink mini is the best solution for what you're looking for. While it would in theory work as a speaker for a computer setup, you won't get much in the way of stereo sound from the soundlink, as the L/R separation is very small because it is one unit.

The only bluetooth computer speakers (i.e. bluetooth enabled speakers that aren't portable) I've ever used are the Logitech Z600 and the Harman Kardon SoundSticks. The Logitechs are about $100 and the HK 2.1 setup is double the price at $200. The Logitechs were pretty good for $100. The HK sounds fuller and gets louder as you would expect, but of course for double the price. It's also the same price as the soundlink you were looking at, but with the soundlink you get mobility.

I really can't recommend enough going out to a store where you can demo these products yourself. Everyone's ears and preferences are different. Typically I would suggest a 2.1 setup to get some better bass and stereo separation. If you want the ability to take the speaker from room to room with you or outside, then perhaps a portable bluetooth device like the soundlink is a good solution. It all depends on how you plan on using the speakers.

I just got the Kanto Yumi's and very happy with them. I think their MSRP is supposed to be slightly higher than the Yu5 but they're currently marked cheaper. Excellent sound and you can't beat the connections/functionality. Really nice having great speakers with everything built it. Huge sound, bass is good and adjustable, sub out.

Some of the reviews talk about a "buzz," you'll notice all those reviews are years old. Supposedly it's been fixed, mine definitely don't have a buzz.

A few things:

• Any type of USB to micro-USB cable will work fine. For example: Amazon, Adafruit.
  
• The adapter (the part that plugs into the wall) does need to be 5V - however pretty much all USB adapters will output 5V because that is the standard for USB (other things that have a barrel plug on the end, like laptop chargers, might be 12V, but you shouldn't need to worry about that).
  
• USB chargers are rated at different currents. The original claim was that you could just use any old micro-USB cell phone charger, but some of those didn't supply enough current for additional USB devices plugged into the Pi (mouse, keyboard, wifi dongle etc). If you have a model B+ (which can handle more current than the Model B thanks to a redesigned power circuit) I'd recommend a supply rated for 2 amps, like this.

I would not describe it as "audiophile quality" gear but it's quite good for what it is. When I was shopping around for one, it seemed to have the best sound in its class; the "beats pill" sounded good too, but cost almost twice as much, and the rest were not so great IMO (in my limited store test).

It can actually get pretty loud, even outside... the mids and highs are solid and the bass is pretty good too albeit a bit hollow. Overall, for the price, I give it a 4.5/5, with the .5 off being for the kinda short battery life of ~3-5 hours, but you can plug it in while you're using it too. It has a line input that should work with an ipod classic.

They do also make one that has a longer battery life, which I think has the same speaker tech.

The Audioengine A2+'s sound fantastic, probably the best sound quality I've heard if you don't want to go with the tedious audiophile route (just plug and play). A major plus is that they take up very little space too. I think they would look great on your desk.

Alternatively, if you'd like something with more emphasized bass (because of having a dedicated subwoofer) plus a nice clean wireless aesthetic, check out these Harmon Kardon SoundStick IIIs. The SoundSticks aren't pure white like the Audioengine A2s and are translucent, but they're designed very beautifully (by Jony Ive himself originally, permanently on display at MoMA) and would look great with the white tones of your room (they also have Bluetooth so you can use them with your phone).

Personally, I agree. I like to bring a speaker with me, just because I like to have one on me. Even the ultralight people have some exceptions for what they like to bring with them ("luxury items").

For me, I've always recommended to others the Anker Soundcore series. The one I’ve linked is one of their small speakers, and I just want to stress that I’ve never owned this speaker, but I’ve heard great things about it.
I do however own the Anker “Classic” A7908 and it served me well as a beginner home Bluetooth speaker.

If you want a higher quality speaker (and don’t mind shelling out a few more bucks) then I’d recommend anything by JBL.

I own the JBL Flip 4 and I use it camping all the time. It’s my favourite speaker.
For lightweight purposes however, I’d recommend the JBL Clip 3. Both linked JBLs should be waterproof, just double check before buying.

There will be an absolute ton of cheap headphones, earbuds and Bluetooth speakers. Like /u/keanex said, check out what you want beforehand, figure out what's actually a good deal on them, and then only look for the ones you've previously identified as good quality and a good sale.

Anker and TaoTronics are two pretty solid brands that are very likely to participate in Prime Day. Last year I got the Anker Soundcore for $27.99 which was an all-time low for it at the time. I asked Anker on Twitter if the new version, the Anker Soundcore 2 would be getting a Prime Day deal and they hinted that it will. Previous best price for that was around $33 I think. I LOVE my Soundcore, so am watching for the Soundcore 2 (which is waterproof) for my bathroom this year.

Tbh I got a £9.99 one off amazon that covers the entire fm spectrum and use it throughout Central london regularly on 89.5. Never have to change frequency and it sounds as good as listening to a powerful radio station. I'm pretty happy with it! You got a good answer already so here's some practical advice.

The headphone jack competes on space with other internals in the phone. They're shipping an adapter in the box so you can continue using your existing headphones. Personally I'm just using a Bluetooth receiver since 2 years now for my wired headphones. Great especially for running, when commuting, etc.

SSDs are small so I got a 2 TB WiFi drive a while ago. Wireless storage for all my stuff. Fast enough for most things but things like video editing has to be done on the internal disk. Backups are important. I mirror the WiFi drive to another USB drive using arRsync, but there are easier to use apps for backup.

I ripped my audio CDs for iTunes 10 years ago for the convenience. You could do that with your current machine if you wanna go that route, or get an external CD/DVD drive from Amazon. A good one costs around 25 bucks.

It's unfortunate you can't access your iTunes stuff on other devices. But the Apple TV is great for what it does. It's not just a streaming box, it's also got the App Store now, so lots of games and other apps too. Now you said you don't want to use Apple Music. But consider iTunes Match, it's $25 a year and will upload all your music to iCloud so it's available on your other devices wherever you are.

Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio 3 may be worth a look. It's a little more than budget however its likely worth it. If you don't mind refurbs, you can get it here for $110. My friend has the older version and, especially on mains power, its amazing for its size. I'd guess it'd be plenty loud for your needs and the bass is extremely impressive. Quality's great too. Sounds a lot bigger than it is. Does have battery if needed however it doesn't get as loud and bass is reduced a bit.

You are always going to be sacrificing sound quality with Bluetooth speakers, but you obviously gain back portability and convenience. Just different uses really. I really don't know if it worth going all out for something $600. I recently got an Anker Soundcore 2 and it is pretty good as a budget option. Haven't heard the higher end stuff yet, but I would suspect they should be solid as well.

Stereo is better than mono.

If you want a clean setup (no receievr/amp) and Bluetooth, something like the Kanto YU6 would be good. I got the YU5’s on discount for use in my spare gaming room, and they are pretty good for the price.

I'm your guy, I've tried tons of these. I have two setups that I can recommend.

I recommend this one the most, it's been the best and most reliable for quite some time for me. Sound quality is great. Also, it has bluetooth, which works great. Just a tip, use the bluetooth and download an app called Android Auto. It's a driving friendly interface that combines your music/podcast apps, navigation, phone app, and Google Voice commands for texts if you need. You can text by voice and it gives you the option to speak your text messages when you get them. You can also set the app to automatically start and shut off when your phone's bluetooth turns on or off.

Here's a tip for the best sound quality out of these if you'll only use your FM transmitter in your car and not the radio. Unscrew the antenna out of your car and toss it in a closet or somewhere. Then a lot of low to medium signal radio stations won't interfere. Which is the cause of like 90% of the bad quality you'll hear.

I really am happy with it. I've had it since Christmas and it is the best investment I've made in a while. I bounced between used and cheap turntables for a couple of years. Some really unhelpful non-suggestions in response to your question. Using 'the lightest possible speaker', people will not be able to hear your music unless they are very near your tent or hiking literally next to you. Terrain, vegetation, weather conditions etc, have a massive effect on how sound will travel, but generally, the sound from speakers in this weight category will diminish to an imperceptible level an extremely short distance away from them. If you're in doubt and you've had to set up camp near others for the night, just test it for yourself by walking away from the speaker until the music is inaudible and turn it down if necessary.

The best very lightweight speaker I've found is the X-mini WE. Bluetooth speaker with aux input - weighs 1.7oz. The sound quality is as good as other 3-4oz speakers I tested including a couple made by Anker. It's more expensive than other speakers in this weight category, but the sound quality is much better than others I tested.

For better low frequency response, another good one is the Anker soundcore mini, but it's significantly heavier at 7oz. This speaker is loud enough and has enough bass output that it is much more likely that you'd annoy people and disrupt wildlife with it if you're not careful with the volume.

What do you mean by google fiber? The internet service or chrome(cast/audio)? The easiest solution would be to get a cheapish receiver and a decent set of speakers. Then you would need a fiber optic cable from the TV to the receiver and you would be set. This is not the best solution performance wise. What you should do imo is get the Kanto Yumi bookshelves which have good sound quality, will get loud enough, has boatload of connections, and a remote. All you would need is a optical cable from the TV to the Kantos. It also has bluetooth for when you want to easily play music. If you want to push up to your budget you can get a dac to clean up the signal from your TV but this is not absolutely necessary. This is the solution I would go as it is under budget, stupid simple to set up, easy to use, and has a plethora of color options to please the wife. From the Music Freedom Questions section the answer is no. I haven't checked in a long time to see if that's actually the case though.

The Echo is also a regular old bluetooth speaker, so she could still use a phone that way. Just might not be able to hotspot it for music freedom for a direct connection from the echo to other music apps.

I agree, I bought a Droid on release day, and ended up starting to carry around a USB cable + one of these to keep it charged.

Yes this is very true. I stopped buying cheap chargers on eBay as they were clearly fibbing about their maximum current. If you read the XDA accessories forum you'll fine even many branded chargers don't tell the truth.

If you want to be sure you either need to buy the phone's official genuine charger, or I would recommend Amazon's basic 2.1A charger which will charge anything you can throw at it, including pads.

There is another way, not necessarily ideal, but it leaves your lightning port free and clear.

The problems is that it has a battery that needs to be recharged, but at least your lightning port is free. Added bonus, this converts any headphones into a wireless headset too.

Still need more clarification.

Easy to move / portable? Yes. It's small.
Can it be used while it's being moved? Yes. You can use a USB battery back like this or this one.
Can it be used outdoors? Depends on the weather. You'll need a weatherproof case to use it in very humid areas and where it rains a lot.

A little overkill...I'd think an 1,050 mah battery like the Duracell Instant USB Charger would be more cost effective and useful.

This from experience though...We run the XP8000's as external BP for our cameras when we work on set, the only time we've used them for GoPro's is when we needed to do a time lapse over the course of a few hours. General rule of thumb with video is to not record more than you need too...Guys who walk out of an OP with 12 hours of footage and actually sit down and edit that are crazy. I'd rather just be good with 8 hours of run time and just pick a window I'm recording in.

It's no Focal speaker or something but it's very good for the price. Passive radiators (Like a subwoofer without a magnet) work great in things like this. You can actually feel the bass in your chest when you're listening to music in the shower.

I have these they sound fantastic and have great battery life.

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced option, check out the Anker Soundcore Minis . They are less than $30 and can be paired together before connecting to Alexa device. It’s not a true “surround sound” but it is stereo sound with a pretty dynamic sound for the price.

Since I made the album on my phone I can't add captions. So I'll explain it here.

After looking all over the place for some sort of DIY project of making the TrackClip Pro wireless, I decided I'd give it a shot. My TrackClip Pro has seen better days anyways. All it is is a 3x AAA battery pack, switch, and green LED from Radioshack in a plastic housing. It definitely isn't going to be my finished product because of how bulky it is. I need to find some way to make it a lot smaller, maybe even breaking it into two packs.

I think next I'm going to try using a smaller switch and LED, as well as a small circuit board to solder it all onto. Because right now it is somewhat heavy, and I need to make it more compact. In the pictures I have it sitting vertical on the headset. It's much better sitting horizontal on it as far as having that giant chunk on your ear.

It seems to work great off of the 3 AAAs although I have no idea how long the battery life will last. From reading around the TrackIR forums it seems that it draws 5v typically from the USB, and the AAAs are only putting out 4.5v. So we'll see how that goes.

I've seen people use the rechargeable emergency USB chargers like this one but I didn't feel like dropping $30 on it, plus I like to build things myself!

For a small speaker in a compact space I recommend the Anker soundcore mini. Very clear vocals and a bit of bass. I really like this speaker for light listening.

It can stay plugged in and doesn't sleep for me, I have it plugged in to the dock with an aux cable.

Anker is awesome. I picked up one of these when it was on sale for $45 last week and it sounds as good as any name brand $100 to $200 BT speaker I've used.

He can add a USB to Optical converter. This Signstek will do that as well as offer RCA outputs for a second device like a dedicated headphone amp. That would have those Edifiers working out for him.

For another $50 the Kanto Yumi would also be viable.

If noise continues to be an issue, look into a cheap ground loop isolator.

Looking back at your post I realized I slightly misunderstood what you were doing. But in terms of ruggedness and portability I think it would be a better option to just mount the pirate box in a case(which I am trying to find on that will work well for this, so if you have any ideas!?) and carry a separate device. The pirate box interface is all browser accessible, So phone/tablet/netbook/etc. would be fine to access it from.
I bought a rechargeable power cell This style was used and recommended in a pirate box build I read. I am really impressed with how light and small it is. We will see how long the battery life is with the wifi but I expect it won't be too terrible.

  The B&W Zeppelin does sound very good but my family thinks it looks like a futuristic bomb. Snagged it for free from someone dropping it off at electronics recycling! It is very form follows function, largest bass driver in the middle since you only need one low bass omni directional driver, then 2 medium size mid bass drives to either side then 2 small tweeters at the tapered ends.

Check out the Soundfreaq Sound Kick; it's a portable Bluetooth speaker like the others that you mentioned and you can pick one up on Amazon for $92 right now. I'm in a similar situation. I've been using this fm transmitter from Amazon for the last year. It costs $13 and works fine for Charlotte on 88.1. It plugs into your lighter for power and the other into the earphone hole on your phone or MP3 player so you can play anything you want. I personally think solar chargers are silly and unnecessary for backpacking. It's shaded most trails we hike, the charge you get is minimal, they are heavy, breakable, and encourage technology usage (where the reason I'm backpacking is to escape technology). But to each their own.

You might even use one of those portable USB chargers if you didn't want to break out the laptop. You'd have to be good about recharging the charger afterward, but you wouldn't have to run the ac adapter to the wall.

A powered USB hub will not only power your PI, but you can multi-purpose it to power the PI, it's accessories, and connect them to the PI. This is how mine it set up.

It would not be easy to add a sub to the 1200 or 1700 several people have had issues with the 1850 sub line out that it’s weak and needs a preamp.

This system is a little more than I want to spend, but still close enough to $100 that I think I'm going to get it, and it has optical input.

If the receiver has a "phono" input then it should have a phono preamp built in. Most old receivers do, that's how people listened to most of their music after all. Sounds like the preamp might be busted?

That's what I have. They've got a built in phono preamp, they're powered so no need for an external amp, they have bluetooth, aux, an output for a sub if you want to add one, they get loud, have decent bass for a bookshelf speaker, come in a bunch of different colors/finishes... Pretty much everything you'd want and more from a pair of speakers.

If these are too expensive, the YU4s are $100 cheaper I think, but they're a bit smaller so you're not going to get quite the same bass response and they might struggle to fill a larger room.

I hate to break it to you, but that wont work unless you can actively power the speaker. a bare 3.5 cable does not carry near enough the wattage you would need.
If you still have the head unit, you may be able to terminate a 3.5 cable off of that, but i do not know enough about radio to tell you that. what would definatly work if you still have the head unit. is a car FM/3.5 conversion kit, buy a small FM antenna, and one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AIM5ZE Boom, localized radio station, pro is that it would even be wireless

It's working great so far, but there are a few quirks. I have to manually toggle the optical input with a remote to switch between audio for my PC and PS4, but i'm not the type of person to have videos streaming while i play games. If i really wanted to, i could plug a cord into the AUX on my monitor and my Logitech 2.1 speakers to have concurrent audio.

Here's my setup:
PS4 HDMI is hooked into this box to split the audio out of the hdmi
HDMI from that box connects to my monitor and the optical cable plugs into this optical audio switcher
One optical cable goes from that switcher to my PC and the other connects to the speakers here

I haven't noticed any signal degradation despite the double boxes and extra cables stretching into every direction.

The Tap is, unfortunately, discontinued according to the Amazon product page. It looks like they found a box of them in a warehouse somewhere as there are a few new ones still listed now, but when I was looking for a device a couple of weeks ago, only refurbished models were available. I've been really happy with my refurb Tap, but unfortunately since the product is discontinued/abandoned, it's doubtful there will be any further software updates.

You can listen to the music on your phone through your radio with this device.

I just use a $20 Bluetooth adapter and some chopped up Sony headphones.

I may switch to plug phones eventually.
