So the hitch that I found sits comfortably behind the number and actually affects the exit angle very little if at all. I'll also be getting a 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter that is technically only meant for class II hitches, but for only holding a spare tire, it will be fine. It's also fine for holding a bike rack or something. I'll edit this comment when I'm at my computer and show you what I'm getting

EDIT:

  1. This is the hitch that I will be using. If you look at the pictures, it seems very discrete without much taken away from exit angle.

  2. This is the best one that I can find for your car. There aren't any pictures form reviews, but it sounds like in the comments that it is also discrete, although there's no guarantee. If that one doesn't work, something custom is probably your only option.

  3. This is the adapter that you can use. Just remember that as a general rule of thumb, your towing capacity is cut in half if you use one of these, just as a safety precaution. Towing with an adapter also depends on how strong the pin is that you're using to hold it into the base hitch.

  4. This is the tire holder that I am probably going to get. It seems a little short, but I measured on my car and it should be alright. If it is way too short, you can get a hitch riser like this

  5. THIS is the tire carrier that I want, because it is very very strong and the cheaper one folds to the side, which is really nice. I don't know if I'll be able to afford it, though, so I'll see
If all this metal that's bolted to your car is rattling around way too much because of the couple millimeters of play in the hitches, pick yourself up a couple of these and it's problem solved.

Hope this helps! If you want to know anything else, let me know

Depends on if you're dealing with snow or ice. I'd suggest investing in 3 tools:

  1. A scraper/brush combo
  2. A windshield snow cover
  3. De-icing spray

    I have a very simple scraper/brush combo:

    https://www.amazon.com/Mallory-532-Integrated-Scraper-Handle/dp/B000BPLNXC

You may need a longer model (they sell extendable versions) if you have a tall car, like a van or SUV. They sell a thing called a "snow broom" for pulling the snow off more effectively; this one telescopes out to 28 inches:

    https://www.amazon.com/SnoBrum-Push-Broom-Extendable-Telescoping-Scratching/dp/B010MFYL02

I have a windshield snow cover, which includes side mirror covers:

    https://www.amazon.com/FROSTBLOCKER-Winter-Windshield-Mirror-Protects/dp/B07HFHDH8Q

You just peel it off when you're ready to leave! Pretty nice. Also, they sell de-icing spray to help kickstart the process, if things are really iced over:

    https://www.amazon.com/Prestone-AS247-Trigger-Spray-Windshield/dp/B01D8SRWOW/

You can also get it as a windshield wiper fluid, or alternatively, get a year-round version:

    https://www.amazon.com/Prestone-AS658-Deluxe-Windshield-Washer/dp/B019W8CNBO/

This is the general idea for clearing off your car:

  4. Get outside early to allow yourself sufficient time to prepare your car before leaving for work/school/errands/etc. Set an alarm if you have to. Make sure you have a good pair of thick winter gloves, so your fingers don't freeze! You may want to invest in a remote-start system to help the car warm up easier, because then it can start the melting process without you have to leave your home or office. The modern remote starts can be operated indoors from your smartphone, over a wifi or cellular connection, so you don't even have to get close & aim it!
  5. Get the car started & turn on the heat to the front & rear windows. This will help in melting the snow or ice & also warms up the engine, which helps melt the ice & snow on the hood of the car.
  6. Start by brushing off the roof of your car. The top-down approach is easiest because the snow & ice can fall off the car first, preventing double the work later if you were to start with the car's body or the glass. Also, in my state, it's a $120 fine if they catch you driving without clearing off your roof.
  7. Scrape off all of the windows next: the front windshield, the rear glass, the side windows, and the side mirrors. In my state, it's a $92 fine if you are driving around with an "obstructed view". If you skip scraping off most of the windows AND don't clean off your roof, that's a $212 fine total if you get pulled over (not to mention being unsafe!).
  8. Finally, clear off the body with the brush. The engine will have helped warm up the hood, so the snow & ice should be easy to slide off. The biggest thing to realize is that you want to use the scraper on the GLASS and the brush on the PAINT. Sometimes you'll have to crack some ice on the body to get enough to grip to scrap off, but see if you can use your fist to crack it first, that way you don't risk scraping the paint itself.

If you live in a slippery area, get some YakTax. It's basically a slip-on spiderweb design that fits over your existing shoes & has coils that act as snow cleats so you can walk on ice & snow: (plus you don't have to wear boots to school or work!)

    https://yaktrax.implus.com/

I'd also suggest keeping a few spare items in your trunk:

  • Spare wipers, in case they break
  • A small shovel
  • Some kitty litter or a bag of salt for traction, in case you get stuck
  • A blanket, in case you get stuck

Parking outdoors in the winter isn't too bad if you're prepared - leave enough time to get everything warmed up & scraped off and do a good job & clean off your entire car so you can see out of it & so that pieces of snow & ice aren't flying off & hitting other cars. Try not to use the scraper on the paint either, just the brush!

I tried raw octopus once because I didn't want to seem lame in front of my best friend. (I was about 15)

OMG NASTY! The tentacles were rubbery and did stick to my tongue and the smell was awful. I managed to get it down, but I immediately barfed in her sink. Thankfully all she did was laugh, and we remained friends for years. :)

If I win, I'd love this item.

u/gnarmonica Ā· 1 pointr/mazda3

I have these roof bars on my 2012 Mazda3 hatch, and I'm happy with it. Price is way cheaper than the Mazda OEM bars. Some wind noise beginning at 40mph, but if you listen to music, it's easily tuned out.

As for the bike rack, you've got a lot of options here, but brand wise you're probably looking at either Thule or Yakima. I went with the Yakima Forklift and I love it. As long as you can easily pop off your front wheel, this is fast and extremely stable (plus if you buy the additional locking mechanism for like $20, the skewer key-locks your fork in place). You can't go wrong with Thule either, but I find Yakima is typically cheaper for a similar product.

u/vertigo1083 Ā· 2 pointsr/CherokeeXJ

Have you looked into something like this? Or possibly something like This? These guys made the ideal carrier for cheap and fairly simple, but if you want to just outright buy one, there are ones like these:

http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/products/trail-accessories/fold-down-tire-carrier-premium-model/ (A lil pricey)

https://www.amazon.com/CURT-31006-Spare-Tire-Mount/dp/B0009YIE1O

All of them except the last one fold down so you can open your tailgate, which is nice. It doesn't look bad, keeps the roof free, the cargo open, and easy to move/access.

u/Donkeymint Ā· 1 pointr/4x4

Itā€™s difficult to find anything <$200. Thereā€™s the cheap Curt hitch on Amazon. Floats around $85 give or take.

I think it might look kind of derpy on a full size SUV but it would do the job.

Honestly, your best bet is probably to find a local machine shop and see if they would weld something up for you. I bet for $150 you could pay somebody with some time and talent to make something a bit nicer than the Curt hitch. Maybe it could at least swing downward for tailgate clearance.

Also, depending on where you are, keep an eye in FB marketplace and Craigslist. I see tire mounts pop up every once in a while.

Nice tire mounts are expensive for a reason. It takes a lot to keep a heavy, oversized tire from rattling around and making vibrations with thousands of miles of off road use and debris.

I have a 2DR with the rear seat out and absolutely love it. Light, nimble, feels like a toy. Excellent city car actually due to parallel parking capabilities. I would only go 4DR if you have hauling needs or anything more than a significant other & dog. If you do go 2DR i'd suggest grabbing one of these: https://www.amazon.com/CURT-18153-Basket-Style-Cargo-Carrier/dp/B00JF5LRN0/ref=zg_bs_15735311_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HR7SDTG5WGZZ1GKJCX0J

In fact I just drove across the country camping with both of them in the car and it was workable with that additional cargo space

Edit: Hard top is pretty easy to move on and off 2DR w/ 2 people, so I went hard

u/wallybeavis Ā· 2 pointsr/cincinnati

I second an ice scraper (not the short stubby ones we use in the south), something like this, to clear the snow off of your hood, windshield, and roof https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HACYNY

I also have 3 pairs of gloves, thin cheap ones that allow you to use your cell phone while walking around. A medium thickness that allows for warmth and dexterity while driving, and finally a nice pair of thick gloves that'll let you stay warm while you shovel your car out of it's parking spot, or driveway (if that's applicable).

Folks also recommend keeping a couple of bottles of water, a sweatshirt, and a blanket in your car.

Other than that, make sure your wipers are good, and keep your windshield fluid reservoir full, to clean off the road salt

u/Schrockwell Ā· 3 pointsr/amateurradio

Beautiful work, OP. It seriously looks like a real product.

For hams with a 2" hitch receiver, this works WONDERS as a base. Works great with the SOTA Beams telescoping pole, and I'm pretty sure the Jackite pole would fit as well (2.3" ID).

u/alf3311 Ā· 4 pointsr/4Runner

Correct, you don't want gas in the vehicle. If you are looking for something easy you could get a hitch-mounted cargo tray. It will limit your off-road clearance (specifically your departure angle) but if you are just talking about camping/overlanding and not hard-core rock climbing it would probably be OK.

EDIT: I also have to add... I know a lot of people think carrying around extra gas cans looks badass but for most people it's really unnecessary. With a little bit of planning, the 25 23-gallon tank built in is enough for almost anything. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but there are definitely costs associated with the hardware required. Plus it's also a bit of a safety hazard... if you get rear-ended or back into a tree, there's a good chance those tanks will puncture and make the situation a lot worse.

u/kna_overland Ā· 1 pointr/4Runner

Its from amazon. I saw a guy in a parking lot with a sweet 3rd gen. He had this basket. He said it was sold on amazon as a "Bison Roof Basket". When i searched for it I found that they changed ownership or names etc, and now operate under "Arkensen roof basket". Its a 3 piece and really well put together. Also really fits the size of the roof proportionally as well

here is the link.

Very solid buy and also qualifies for amazon prime which is nice :)

u/hillshmill Ā· 3 pointsr/Kayaking

Does your Grand Cherokee have the side rails that run along the edges of the roof but not across? If yes - I recently bought this set of cross bars from amazon and an really happy with them. I also have a GC and they are the easiest and most secure cross bars Iā€™ve ever installed.

u/SassDaddy Ā· 2 pointsr/JeepPatriot

Thanks! It was about $120 and it was super easy to install yourself! Make sure you buy the crossbars first! Here's a link to the rack:

> as long as I keep the front plate in the glove box and present it if I am asked than I will be okay.

Almost certainly is not following the law and preferential treatment is given due to owning a high-end car.

First, I'm kind of intrigued as to what kind of car it is. You don't here about too many numbered cars anymore.

Second, you do have a few options. I also wanted to protect my bumper from drilling holes and I got a piece of foam and zip tied the plate to the grill. Can definitely be done in a way that doesn't look bad.

Your other option is to get something like this I've seen all sorts of these, and you can even get ones that will retract or extend from inside the car.

Companies also make front plate mounts that utilize existing holes in the bumper.

It appears to be 100% identical to the rhino, but over $100 cheaper. Only difference is it says tyger instead of rhino. I didn't know the x style came in any other size. Really doesn't matter. I. The three months I've had it, I put nothing in it except my my crushed dreams of good gas milage. Looks cool though šŸ˜‚

u/riotgirlxo Ā· 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

It seems like various Subaru dealers have them at different prices online. My local dealer has them set to about $160 So I would be getting them for free.

I mainly would like to haul firewood, shovel, awning and my huge tent in a basket on my roof. I was thinking of getting this basket from Amazon Arksen since it's length is adjustable

u/Flowmaster44 Ā· 3 pointsr/CherokeeXJ

Get one that goes into your hitch. It'll be centered and easily removed.
https://discountflagoutlet.com/index.php/tow-hitch-mount-flagpole-holder.html If you don't want to buy one, you could probably make one pretty easily using an old ball mount.

Here's another one I just found:
http://www.amazon.com/Camco-51611-Hitch-Flagpole-Holder/dp/B004IVGA0G
I like stuff that'll fit into a hitch because its not a permanent modification. I'm not drilling holes in my vehicle. If I don't like the look of something I can simply remove it from the hitch and sell it.

u/glitterphobia Ā· 23 pointsr/Columbus

Remember that bridges freeze before roadways. Even if there's no ice on the road, there could be ice on a bridge.

If you start to slide, don't panic and don't over correct. It's easier said than done. If your back loses traction, continue to steer where you want to go.

As others have said, no sudden movements, braking, or accelerating. As much as possible, maintain a consistent speed.

When you're at an intersection or traffic light, be extra cautious when you have the right of way. Don't assume you can just go. Be on the lookout for drivers who were unable to stop and may slide through an intersection. If you are unable to stop at an intersection, honk your horn to alert other drivers ASAP.

Edit: Another thing... If you car is covered in ice or snow, make sure to completely clean off all windows (front, back, sides) before driving. This might seem like common sense, but when you're outside in the freezing cold, it's tempting to just quickly clean off a small patch on the driver side windshield. Also, remember to wipe snow off of headlights and tail lights so other drivers can see you.

Make sure the rental company has a scraper in the car. It will look something like this. Brush is for snow, scraper at the end is for ice on windows. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000HACYNY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482440713&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=snow+brush+with+scraper&dpPl=1&dpID=31WMTMJfWQL&ref=plSrch

State law says you must have lights on if there's any precipitation, rain or snow.

u/techworm33 Ā· 4 pointsr/mazda3

Yes!

I have these cheap [mud flaps] (https://www.amazon.com/Rally-Armor-Universal-fitment-hardware/dp/B017L0841I/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1522073118&sr=1-1&keywords=rally+armor+mud+flaps) on my sedan, and i like the look. I will try to grab a picture for you.

Ive had them on for about 4-5 months and the bottoms are beginning to curl. if you do choose to get a set you should definitely get ones that are better quality.

u/nokios Ā· 2 pointsr/mazda3

I'm not sure about 2010, but I got a Rola roof rack for my '12. Works pretty well. I recommend getting a wind-deflector though..

u/bentreflection Ā· 8 pointsr/overlanding

this rooftop bag from Amazon. I drove from Los Angeles, through banff, to anchorage (over 5k miles) with it on the roof. It rained everyday of our trip for a month straight and never leaked a drop of water. It's still on my roof and it's rained on us almost every day we've been in ak. Amazing deal.

Also, if you're over landing you need to get an air compressor so you can air down and up if you need. I would also recommend an inverter and an extension cord so you can plug stuff in.

Additionally, I'd invest in some anker cigarette lighter and iPhone charging cables, as well as one of those large extra charge battery packs.

Also this little light is awesome. I use it all the time.

u/dcon555 Ā· 2 pointsr/JeepPatriot

MD requires a front plate n i don't want to drill any holes in the bumper so i got this. sure there are other ones that don't require holes but are all $55+.

thanks, recently put the lip on n i love it. do not love the scrapping though.

u/ducksaysquackquack Ā· 2 pointsr/4Runner

thanks! HERE is the rack i'm using and for the price, i'm extremely pleased. though due to the max weight of 150lbs, i've only used it so far to throw light camping equipment and a cooler up top. also, i wish it was 10" - 12" longer so that i could have my light bar positioned a bit futher up.

u/robjdlc Ā· 1 pointr/harborfreight

Did some digging and it looks like the super cheap ones (https://www.reddit.com/r/CherokeeXJ/comments/c4bex4/found_some_reviews_of_our_15_ebay_roof_rack_and/) didnt work out (https://www.reddit.com/r/CherokeeXJ/comments/c5xynn/that_roof_rack_aint_looking_so_good/) and the ebay/amazon market has leveled out.

Cheapest I currently found on amazon is still the one I bought in 2018: https://smile.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70115-Steel-Rack-150-Capacity/dp/B073G49NPV/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=maxxhaul&qid=1570734169&sr=8-1. (Though when I bought it it was $65, currently $70.)

All theMaxxhaul, Leader, Arksen, "Direct Aftermarket" stuff on amazon is all the same thing (like, the same exact product with a different label) as the Haulmaster.

u/idokamaroq Ā· 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

Whatever you do, don't cheap out and get these like I did unless you want to spend all your free time over the next week to try and get them to stop whistling. They whistle loud at anything over 45mph. Once I get that sorted out, I think I'll be happy with these, though. I (140lbs) climbed up and sat on my basket, and they didn't noticeably bend, or even creak/squeak.

u/bicball Ā· 3 pointsr/teslamotors

As in shoving something in the gap around the square tubing? No. The ball mount did bounce around on my old 1 1/4" hitch, but I didn't feel/hear anything with this one (though with the trailer off, I can jiggle it around some). Maybe after a few trips it'll start wearing away, but I probably wouldn't do anything about it.

Looks like you can use something like this, but I like the ability to quickly connect/disconnect.

I used this flag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FA6BLC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PIUhAbFC0RBT8

For the actual pole I bought a 4-5 foot fencing pole from Lowe's drilled some holes into it and bolted on some mounting clips for the flag then I spray painted the whole thing black... Oh and at the bottom there's a bolt that they give you to "secure the pole" but it's flimsy so I just went to Lowe's and bought a black hex key bolt and used that to actually secure it. Last thing I needed is the flag flying into the ocean lol

u/tofuflower Ā· 1 pointr/sanfrancisco

When this happened to my friend, he put on a no-drill detachable front license plate holder for inspection at the DMV, then took it off. Check out audi car forums for your model - other owners who had this issue probably came up with temporary fixes for the correction.

You could also install something like this for a more permanent fix to flip up every time you park.

I have a theory that LA is more lenient / cheaper ticket because there are more people that care about front aesthetics of the car. My brother doesn't have a front plate either and got stopped at LAX while circling with just a warning.

These cross bars and these yak holders. Really recommend the yak holders as they have held up great over a year now.

This type of snow pusher and all of the similar ones are AMAZING at clearing snow quickly, even the roof of your car. You can both push and pull snow and have your car, truck or SUV clear in just a minute.

I've had one in one form or another for almost 20 years.

u/ashtong Ā· 2 pointsr/mazda

They're usually called no show plates where you can have it up and showing and then when you want it flips down and hides under the bumper. First thing I bought for my car and bought it from Florida so it didn't have the holes drilled already. This is basically the same one I got

http://www.amazon.com/Show-Go-License-Plate-Holder/dp/B001E4E0ZW

They also make a electronic one but it's not worth it. I had them install it for free when I was getting headlight work done the day I bought the car

Also here are some other photos I took earlier today that show the frame location and such better. http://m.imgur.com/a/dCkgj

This is the current basket I have right now here . Only thing I did was add a camo vinyl to the fairing. The old one is here , but I donā€™t recommend it due to its flimsiness. The tow hook is just an aesthetic tow hook from amazon as well, itā€™s non functional.

I can answer this one! I have this rack on my Impreza. It's the Tyger rack, and I got mine on Amazon. It's a great rack. I loved the fact that it's pretty deep, but not as stylistically bland as the Yakima rack.

Edit: This one

u/dont_dox_me_again Ā· 5 pointsr/Subaru_Outback

Mine is in my hitch. I fabricated my own because I didn't like how bulky the other ones were.

I bought this fold-down adapter for my hitch and this Curt tire mount. Cut off the receiving end of the tire mount and then weld it into the adapter. It's pretty heavy but it's much more compact. You canā€™t mount the tire directly to that Curt mount so I used a couple of 2ā€ wheel spacers and old lug nuts as my mounting hardware. My stock suspension started to sag immediately after putting it on so I have to add these Rallitek 1.4" lift overload rear springs to compensate for the extra weight. Once fully loaded, it handles better than it did with the stock suspension. I also need to figure out what to do about my license plate. Right now the spare blocks the original plate mount so Iā€™ve got it zip-tied to the spare until I can figure out a better solution.

u/Helen_A_Handbasket Ā· 1 pointr/GoRVing

Get a hitch tightener. It will alleviate much of the "normal" noises a hitch can make. But yes, like everyone else says, make sure your hitch etc is correct.

So you canā€™t see this but on the other side I have an awning attached. The crossbars that Subaru offers have 0 overhang so I wouldnā€™t have been able to attach my awning to the cross bars. They are cheap and affordable but really worked well for my build

Pre-heat the car if you can. If youā€™re talking a lot of snow on the car and not just a layer of ice, then after the car if pre-heated, you could use a Foam Snow Brush. These brushes work great for pushing huge amounts of snow off (6ā€ or more).

u/unkodesu Ā· 2 pointsr/4Runner

I did a lot of looking before I bought and after what I saw I decided I didn't want to spend a ton because I really don't need rack that can support a roof top tent and I dont want to start hacking factory parts off my new truck. So I found this very inexpensive happy alternative.

Here is the link to Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013COCXDC/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It requires a bit of assembly and I added a few steps to ensure that for the most part its water/rust resistant, adhesive silicone to fill jointed pieces and lock tight for assembly screws. Added some flat black anti rust paint at places where it needed.

The mounting to my 5th gen took a bit of re-engineering. The brackets needed to be inverted to work with the stock cross bars. Once I did that it held very well and I can shake the whole truck by grabbing the rack.

The max weight limit is 250 lbs but I doubt I'll ever need that for my camping gear.

All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and its 200 less than the cheapest high end one piece universal rack.

u/Xerous Ā· 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

I went with a very similar setup and just installed the cargo basket today! I got some decent but cheaper knockoffs of a very similar crossbar (a bit lower profile) on ebay. I had to hit em with some plastidip to black em out. ebay link

and the same rack but just another brand and a bit cheaper: amazon link

I agree the combo of low profile bars and that style basket is a great look on a Rene.

Sto-n-sho bracket mounts to the underside of the bumper and is removable, but stupid expensive.

Ive seen some guys zip-tie the plate to the grill mesh.

Amazon has a few cheaper hide away front mounts like this

You can also add a tow hook mount to the crash bar and use it to mount the plate through the grill as well, but those tend to be more pricey than the sto-n-sho, but look great.

If you have some slop between the hitch rack and receiver, you can use a "hitch tightener" or "hitch anti-sway clamp" to get rid of it.

I think this is the one I use with my hitch rack:

https://www.amazon.com/StowAway-Tightener-Anti-Rattle-Stabilizer-Hitches/dp/B0001CMUV4

It's worked well with my XR650L, which is close to 350 lbf with a full tank of gas. I can just about stand on one edge of the rack without any twist between the rack and receiver. It eliminated a lot of bounce and sway of the rack with respect to my SUV.

u/Only_Validates_Names Ā· 1 pointr/veloster

I got a pair of real cheap universal flaps off amazon. You have to drill your own holes in the flaps but theres already screw holes in the wheel wells so you don't need to do that. If you can bootleg a tool you dont even need to remove your tire (i taped a small screwdriver attachment to a wrench haha)

u/410_Bacon Ā· 2 pointsr/goprodiy

I would recommend a flag pole hitch mount like this one: Camco 51611 Hitch Mount Flagpole Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004IVGA0G and then get a flagpole in whatever length you need.

u/just-another-post Ā· 4 pointsr/Mustang

Hey OP, if you do end up installing a license plate, get an undermount license plate holder. This what I bought for mine. It's basically a giant L-bracket which I attached to the underside of the bumper, where the drill holes are hidden (I drilled just above where your rally lights are).

If you want to shell out the extra $, you can also go for a truly drill-less option.

Then, one day, when the laws are repealed (wishful thinking), you can laugh all the way to the bank...the bank of undrilled bumpers.

u/xefrem Ā· 2 pointsr/MINI

Well so I just went back and checked and it turns out they're the basic ones, so whoops. Now I know at least that I can upgrade them lol.

u/nhct Ā· 1 pointr/mazda3

Where are you seeing $100?

The exact model you linked is at Amazon for $21.11, with free shipping and 30-day free returns.

There are lots of very similar models on eBay from as low as $11 (search for 'Mazda 3 tow hook license plate'), also with free shipping, with some sellers having sold scores and even hundreds of them, between $11 ā€” $20.

It's not exactly a hard-to-find or high-tech accessory.

Any of them would get the job done, if that clean-grille but off-center look appeals to you.

At $24, one could say it's priced slightly above the going rate, due to the brand name.

If you can find a direct fit one that goes into the tow hook, go for that one. My Saabaru has one, I think it's Rho (http://www.rhoplate.com/) or something.. Grimmspeed makes one, too.

If you don't mind drilling into the bumper (after cutting all the plastic out of it to fit the FMIC into mine, I wasn't about to hesitate doing 2 screw holes), you can get the Autozone one.. this seems to be the one I got: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013HP98C -- except I paid 10-12 bucks, I think!

It's not the best but it's pretty solid. I accidentally ran into a concrete ceiling in an underground parking structure due to lower clearance than I thought and the roof rack basket was untouched.

But it's got those skinny little bars instead of big fat one. If it was a big bar/pole, I could have used ubolts. With these skinny ones.. maybe I can use a steel plate. I can use two bolts around 2 of the skinny bars and sandwich it with a steel plate from below.

I've actually taken mine on two (going to be 3 within a few months) cross country road trips from Ohio to California. Have a torklift ecohitch installed which is a no-weld solution that bolts to the existing muffler mounting holes in the frame. Combined it with CURT's cargo carrier. Haven't had any issues yet. basket itself is about 70lbs and we usually have a couple pieces of luggage strapped down in it (Stuff that we don't need until we get to our destination. Mostly clothes;). I believe at last check Torklift rates the hitch at a max 200lb tongue weight with our vehicles. I might at some point swap out for a lighter basket though.

There's a bunch of options, but for the price you can't beat this one. I had a slatted one and it sucked. There are others but few have adjustable positions. This one worked well because the location can be dialed in by using the different holes and pivoting the frame which is what I needed for my accessory grill lighting. I recommend you use loctite or a rubber washer though.

Wouldn't call it BIFL but this snow broom speeds up brushing off my car so much. I guess the BIFL version would be a push broom with softer bristles.

Otherwise, some kind of neck protection you can bring up over your face. I've been using a merino wool Buff. And thermal leggings make a big difference under your pants.

I'm running the 4" Rough Country standard travel with 1.5" wheel spacers. I'm going to have a swing down, hitch mounted spare tire carrier welded up which opens up a ton of room for storage where the old spare is. This is the rack that I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013COCXDC?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title
